$45m McLaren NZ Epic Tour fleet to pass through Cromwell The McLaren Epic Tour New Zealand kicked off this week in Auckland, with a fleet of 32 supercars and their owners heading from Auckland to Queenstown... and creating an enormous stir along the way. This morning they leave Tekapo heading our way. The fleet should arrive in Wanaka at 2.15pm where they will spend the night leaving at 8.30am for Cromwell and Highlands Motorsport Park, the tour finishing how it started - on racetrack. Farewell to Wanaka at 8.30am and heading for Highlands Motorsport Park in Cromwell, with the Tour finishing how it started: on a racetrack. Of special interest is the sole, unassuminglooking F1 (McLaren’s first road car from the 1990s, estimated value $22m), several 675LTs and two examples of the P1 ‘hypercar’ - McLaren’s flagship model.

Strength of Character Winner at Bannockburn Gutbuster Article and photo supplied

Wintery conditions greeted over 200 mountain-bikers who lined up at the Garston Hotel in Northern Southland for Saturday’s Bannockburn Gutbuster race. The 75km journey took in over 20 creek crossings through the Nevis Valley, climbing over Duffers Saddle then down into Bannockburn near Cromwell. Riders faced hail and rain showers, wind gusts and snow flurries.

is on 30 December, The Golden Gate Lake Dunstan Triathlon on January 2 and Lake Dunstan Cycle Challenge on January 8. These three events would be run by veteran athlete and sports administrator Bill Godsall from Cromwell.

After three gruelling hours there was only one second in it for Tim Rush(1st) and Micheal Vink(2nd) in the Open Men’s section(pictured above). Kate Fluker won the Open Women’s section with Erin Greene second and Shannon Hope third. Terry Davis of Highlands Events said ‘very tough’ conditions faced the competitors. “The importance of taking the right gear was re-iterated at the briefing. When people asked if they should take their light or heavier jacket they were told to take the heavy one.” Participants had been happy to reach the finish line at the Bannockburn Hotel after the worst crosswinds around Duffers Saddle blew some riders off the track. They had then been forced to battle a solid head wind all the way down into Bannockburn, Mr Davis said. “Character was the winner on the day. Everyone who competed out there on Saturday showed great strength of character – the winners did amazing times into the wind and the back of the field guys show incredible perseverance to not give up!” The race was the second in the Bike it Now! Cromwell Summer Series, owned by the Cromwell & Districts Promotion Group. The XS Storage Cromwell Bannockburn Mountain Bike Classic

From the “War Correspondent”

First World War This column (contributed by the Cromwell RSA) will be published nearly every fortnight to report on what was happening in New Zealand and at war 100 years ago. The Cromwell RSA thanks the Cromwell Bulletin for publishing this column. You will recall from the last report that the Australians had occupied the front lines near Fromelles prior to the NZ Division relieving them in November 1916. We cannot (and will not) forget our trans-Tasman neighbours; they fought a very bloody battle at Fromelles. On 19 - 20 July 1916 the 5th Australian Division in its first attack on the Western Front, had suffered grievously trying to take Fromelles. It had over 5500 casualties, including 1900 dead in two days, of whom the bodies of 1300 were never recovered. The winter (December / January 1916/17) was the coldest for thirty years, and made for miserable conditions in the field for the NZ Division; which remained in the Sailly Sector until late February 1917. The waterlogged nature of the land made patrolling difficult, at least until the frosts came in January. At that time the artillery had to resort to placing braziers in the gun and ammunition pits for an hour or two a day, as the low temperatures adversely affected the ammunition. When snow covered the ground, a further problem was the tell-tale fanshaped marks left in the snow forward of the guns after firing, readily observed by the enemy aircraft overhead daily. After a shoot it became necessary to spread large white sheets on the ground in an endeavour to counter this. This correspondent has had many a smile (aka laugh) from reading advertisements in various newspapers from 1916. The Cromwell Argus of 27 November 1916 is no exception. It appears that every household of the day should have had “Chamberlain’s Tablets”: Summer Complaint in Children: During the summer months children are subject to disorders of the bowels and should receive most careful attention. As soon as any looseness of the bowels is noticed Chamberlain’s Colic and Diarrhoea Remedy

should be given. Sold by D. A. Jolly and Sons, Merchants, Cromwell and Pembroke. Constipation may Cause Consumption (Tuberculosis of the Lungs): Many a case of consumption has been caused by constipation. The poisons stored up in the bowels permeate the blood, weakening the system until the patient falls an easy victim to consumption germs. If your bowels will not act naturally assist them by taking Chamberlain’s Tablets. A course of Chamberlain’s Tablets will relieve the most obstinate case of constipation and strengthen the bowels to act naturally without assistance. Sold by D. A. Jolly and Sons, Merchants, Cromwell and Pembroke. Every Organ Suffers: If your food is not properly digested every organ in your body suffers from want of nourishment. Constipation results and you become pale and sallow, nervous and anaemic. Avoid this by taking Chamberlain’s Tablets. They will assist digestion and proper assimilation of food, thus providing nourishment for the whole body. Chamberlain’s Tablets strengthen the bowels to act naturally without assistance. Sold by D. A. Jolly and Sons, Merchants, Cromwell and Pembroke. And, in the same column of the Cromwell Argus of 27 November 2016, on page 3: Shortage of Oats: The Dominion (NZ) is likely to be faced with a serious deficiency in oats during the next twelve months, says the Otautau Standard.” The area sown is estimated at quite one-fifth below last year. In Southland the shortage is going to be especially noticeable; districts which have hitherto been large producers are growing very little more than will suffice for home use. [The next report (on 15 December) will be the last for this year. I wonder if the Cromwell Pharmacy has any of those Chamberlain’s Tablets; must check. Also better stock up on oats]. “We will remember them”

Central Otago rating revaluation shows a jump in property values in the district’s main centres The Central Otago District Rating Revaluation for 2016 is now confirmed and property owners will soon receive a 2016 Notice of Rating Valuation with an updated rating value for their property. The new rating valuations have been prepared 14,153 properties on behalf of the Central Otago District Council by Quotable Value (QV). Rating valuations are fit for purpose valuations carried out on all properties in New Zealand, usually once every three years to help local councils set rates for the following three year period. Rating values are just one of a number of factors councils use to allocate rates. The updated rating valuations should reflect the likely selling price of a property at the effective revaluation date, which was 1 September, 2016, but do not include chattels. However, council rates will not be updated based on the new 2016 rating valuations until 1 July 2017. QV ratingvalue Lead Valuer, Dave Johnson said, “The overall ratable value for the Central Otago District is now $9.2 billion which is a 23.3% increase over the past three years since the last rating revaluation in 2013.” “In the residential market there have been variable value changes since 2013 across the district. Overall the district has seen residential Capital Values increase overall by 24.0% and corresponding residential Land Values have increased overall by 22.6%. The average rating value for a residential dwelling in the district is now $400,000.” “Strong value growth has been seen in the main urban townships of Cromwell, Alexandra and Clyde, while values have decreased in the main Maniototo townships of Ranfurly and Naseby and in whilst Roxburgh there have been just moderate increase in values.”

“The residential market in Cromwell Clyde and Alexandra is strong with a shortage of supply and the strongest growth in the lower end of the market. Cromwell leads the way with a 36.9% increase in the average rating value of a residential dwelling over the past three years to $495,000. Clyde has also seen values rise but to a lesser degree with an increase of 26.5% and the average residential dwelling rating value there is now $407,000. Alexandra values rose 16.8% to an average residential dwelling value of $385,300; Roxburgh values rose 14.9% to an average residential dwelling value of

8

$205,600; while Ranfurly has seen values decrease 4.2% and the town now as an average residential value of $169,300; Naseby values have also decreased 9.4% since 2013 and the average rating value for a residential dwelling in there is now $199,300. “The lifestyle market is reflecting similar market movements to that of the residential sector but with a smaller rate of increase due to the higher values involved. Overall rating values in this market show an increase of 15.0% in capital values and 17.0% in the corresponding land values.” “The commercial sector has strengthened considerably in district’s main centres in recent times; buoyant value appreciation across all urban sectors is evident. Cromwell is now recognised as the “Central hub” due to its close proximity to surrounding towns such as Queenstown, Wanaka, and Alexandra making it an appealing location for both owner occupiers and investors.” “The commercial sector within Alexandra has also shown steady growth with lower vacancies levels noted within Tarbert Street since the 2013 rating revaluation. Reasonable demand still occurs within the Ranfurly commercial sector for wellpresented properties within the main street and values have remained steady in this sector.” “Overall the Commercial property has shown an average increase of 15.5% in Capital Values, while the industrial has shown an average increase of 14.7% in capital values.” “The pastoral sector has also seen big lifts in values despite the drop in commodity prices but remains below the peak of 2014/15. Further irrigation development has been noted and farmers move to more efficient irrigation methods. The overall pastoral increase since the last rating revaluation in 2013 has been 33.1% in capital value with a 36.6% increase in land values.” “The dairy sector only makes up a small part of the district with only 21 properties assessed as dairy. The average increase was 45% in capital value and 54.2% in land value but this increase was distorted by development on recent dairy conversions. The present value levels are back 15% from the peak of 2014/15.” “There are 390 Horticultural properties in the district with Cherry Orchards showing big lifts in values after several good years with the average increase of 67.0%. Demand for good vineyards is increasing with an increase of 27.0% while the conventional mixed orchards are only showing a slight lift in values.” The updated rating valuations are independently audited by the Office of the Valuer General, and need to meet rigorous quality standards before the new rating valuations are certified. A change in a rating value doesn’t necessarily mean that rates will change, it depends on the local council’s requirements and how rating values have changed over the rest of the area. If all rating values drop by the same amount, your percentage remains the same, and so do your rates, but this does depend on your council’s funding requirements. New rating values will be posted to Central Otago District property owners after 28 November, 2016. If owners disagree with their rating value they have the right to object. The objection close-off date is 13 January, 2017. Objections can be lodged online at www.ratingvalues.co.nz or call 0800 787 284.

Wanaka Butcher Expands Homekill Services The Butcher’s Block and Smokehouse has expanded the services available to customers around Wanaka and the wider Central Otago region with the addition of a homekill slaughter service. Hundreds of customers have had their homekill animals and recreational hunted game turned into prime meat cuts and hand-made smallgoods since Wanaka’s only dedicated butcher’s shop secured their Dual Processors’ Licence from the Ministry of Primary Industries in April this year. “Many customers are returning for the third and fourth time with meat from animals they’ve dispatched themselves,” says managing director Bruce Scott. “Now, with our purpose-built trailer, we can go out to customers’ farms and complete the humane, stress-free slaughter of the animals for them.” Scott will be handling the homekill slaughtering himself for the time being, taking one day a week away from the Reece Crescent butchery to complete this service for customers. A licensed slaughterman, Scott has more than 20 years’ experience in this role and it’s Scott’s farm-tomeat homekill slaughter and butchery services at his previous butchery in Helensville, north of Auckland, that introduced him to business partner Jeff Smith who used Scott to process the lambs Smith raised on his Kaukapakapa lifestyle block. Scott has passed on his smallgoods processing experience from 30-plus years as a top-class butcher to Smith, who now manages the smallgoods processing side of The Butcher’s Block operation, producing hundreds of kilos of sausages, bacon, salami and other smallgoods each week for both the shop and homekill customers.

specifications. “We’re delighted with the service and the quality of workmanship from Central Custom Engineering in Alexandra for the trailer; Central Lakes Engineering in Wanaka have also built several components and we used Pukka for the very striking sign-writing.” Scott says bookings for the new homekill slaughtering service were coming in before the trailer was even on the road. “It’s been such a great spring so lots of farmers have lambs, cattle and pigs in great condition ready to turn into prime meat cuts and delicious smallgoods over the coming weeks.” Those interested in finding out more about the homekill services offered by The Butcher’s Block and Smokehouse are invited to call on 443 5017 or email shop@butchersblockwanaka.co.nz for more information. Details are also available on the website www.butchersblockwanaka.co.nz. Bookings before Christmas are filling fast and Scott expects customers will soon need to book at least four weeks in advance to be assured of their preferred timing.

Scott utilised businesses around Central Otago to have the custom-built homekill trailer constructed to his

PUBLIC NOTICES Cromwell Resource Centre Sir/Madam Through your column we would like to acknowledge and thank very much Cromwell and the Businesses for their support and sponsorship with our annual 30th year ‘Gold N Notes Hoedown’ held at the Cromwell Racecourse. Without all your assistance and support this event would not have been the success it was. We would like to especially thank THE TRUSTS COMMUNITY FOUNDATION and SUMMERLAND TRANSPORT for assisting with freight of our marquee for their contribution, along with the Cromwell Town & Country Club, Room Mate Cabins Alexandra Who sponsored Don Costa to attend from Australia, Local Volunteer Fire Brigade who assisting in erecting the large marquee, Cromwell Lions Club and Cromwell Squash Club for food and Refreshments. Also without Brownie, Peter Forsyth, Russell and Sharon Crosbie, Reg McTaggart, and with Several Motor Home owners who come early and stayed back who assisted with the erection and dismantling of the Marquee. The Costs related mainly to the Marquee and Hire. To cater for 850 plus (185 Motorhomes) in Cromwell under one roof is impossible as one must realise and without this support we could not host this type of event financially. We have had a lot of positive feedback from all over New Zealand and they all have stated it was a great event and are planning to come back again next year.

THANK YOU My brother John and I would like to thank everyone -neighbours, friends, family and the Cromwell community for the incredible love and support shown to both our Mum (Alwyn) and to our Dad (Tom) as her health declined over the last few months. We thank you for being there to comfort and support Dad when Mum passed away and have shown great kindness and love to Dad, John and myself. We know you will continue to care about and support Dad as he gets over his tremendous loss. As trying to thank everyone individually or personally could result in someone very important being mistakenly forgotten, please acknowledge this as a personal ‘thank-you’. BAR & RESTAURANT

fivestags@thegate.nz

forage@thegate.nz

blackpanther@thegate.nz The Gate General Manager, Glen Christiansen (right) with Johnny Mayen, Build Team Manager for the main contractors, Cook Brothers Construction. Just a hundred or so metres along State Highway 8B from the giant apricot, apple, pear and nectarine, there’s a new standout attraction for locals and tourists alike --- what was the Golden Gate Lodge is now The Gate. For General Manager, Glen Christiansen, The Gate shows just how serious Cromwell is about not only meeting the needs of a fast-changing demographic but also current and future needs of travellers from overseas and throughout New Zealand: “The key to The Gate is one-stop access to stand-alone brands providing food, refreshments, accommodation and travel bookings. “Two of these include the hunting lodge themed Five Stags Bar & Restaurant and the highly innovative Forage Information Centre & Café. Both are scheduled to open on Friday, December 9, joining the Black Panther Pizza and Super Liquor brands. Something else we are excited about are the earthworks alongside Barry Ave. When landscaping and planting is finished this area will be called ‘The Green’, a place where everyone’s welcome to stretch their legs and relax in bean bags. There will also be white-painted pergolas with timber shade fins and low concrete walls to create a variety of seating and gathering areas

including a children’s play zone. ‘The Green’ also allows patrons from Five Stags and Forage to spill out to enjoy Central Otago’s famous long summer evenings. For our wintertime guests we have a huge open fire outside Five Stags. “With lots of windows and two large stone and steel gable entrances, the larger to Fives Stags and the smaller to Forage, The Gate immediately conveys a genuine warmth of welcome and the promise of a truly memorable experience for all the right reasons,” explains Glen. “Forage for instance is where our staff not only have great customer service and barista skills, they also advise on and book accommodation at a traveller’s destination and activities, whether it’s bungee jumping, jetboating the Shotover River or a relaxing Milford Sound cruise. Further distancing Forage from being a café with travel brochures, we also have touch screens for customers to access information such as special events, latest news and lots more. It almost goes without saying, we have unlimited free Wi-Fi and smartphone charging stations. A feature I’m particularly thrilled with are the large skylights that give Forage customers amazing views of the star-studded Central Otago night sky. “Being just an hour from the centre of Queenstown, a little over half an hour from Wanaka and only a couple

“The fit out is quite amazing with lots of rough-hewn and other timbers that contribute to the welcome tourists and locals will feel as they enter through the gabled entrance.” explains Glen. “In many ways the décor and other features of the Five Stags Bar & Restaurant tells the story of the region. We even have a rustic hunter’s shed with a table seating 12.

Very much a mainstay at The Gate with accommodation now branded Harvest Hotel, which besides being in keeping with the hunting and searching for food and provisions themes of Five stags and Forage, acknowledges the importance to the district of orchards and vineyards. Harvest Hotel also highlights that this is currently Cromwell’s only true Three Star Plus hotel where each of its 47 hotel style suites treat guests to travel book views ranging from the manicured greens of Cromwell Golf Course, to acres of vineyards and orchards, and beyond these, the towering Dunstan, Pisa and Carrick Ranges that form the east, west and southern boundaries of the Cromwell Basin. As well as ample off street parking that includes plenty of space for vehicles towing boats or caravans, Harvest Hotel has a popular purpose built conference centre and wedding venue backing on to a large, sheltered and planted courtyard. Harvest Hotel amenities and facilities include 24 hour concierge. To Wanaka

of hours from the west Coast glaciers, Cromwell’s gateway location on major road routes was definitely a driver for creating the Forage Information Centre & Café. From experience we know many travellers drive past Cromwell in the mid to late afternoon unknowingly timing their arrival in Queenstown when traffic congestion is at its worst. By sorting their accommodation and activities bookings with us at Forage they can choose to wait until the traffic thins out or otherwise choose to sit in the traffic but without that feeling of panic at having to get into Queenstown, find parking and then get to booking outlets before they close.”
