Kindness is showing concern for strangers, Being there for family and friends.

It is a bond that never breaks, And a love that never ends.

Early in 2020, the Cranleigh Community came together to create a natural, sustainable space for peace and calm. A place to reflect, relax, read and enjoy nature. Designed by Rachel T. (Year 13) as part of her Extended Project Qualification, the Cranleigh Legacy Garden was planted by the Community.

WELCOME

MICHAEL WIL SON E M PAT H Y A N D C O N N E CT I O N The narrative in education is always about optimism and hope, nurturing future generations with the wisdom to learn from success and failure. It is even more so in current times. The last 18 months have been traumatic for many across the globe as we all navigate how the modern world is presenting new complex challenges for humanity.

COVID-19 while torrid and hugely disruptive, has also illuminated new opportunities. Our increasing dependence on IT accelerated progress in this area and focused attention on how technology can increase engagement and innovation in learning. The pandemic has also highlighted the very best in human nature. It has shown us the true value of connection, kindness, empathy and a wider recognition and appreciation of community.

In education, this time offered a crucial opportunity for reflection, to look at where we are, what we have learnt and question what is needed for the future.

What is clear is that societies are changing rapidly and raising fundamental questions that need local and global solutions. Climate change, security, poverty, wealth and health inequality are all subjects that go way beyond the ‘standard’ curriculum. If our youth are going to have hope in tackling them, their education needs to be as diverse and inclusive to equip them.

Future-ready students will have to navigate uncertainty with resilience, adaptability and open-mindedness in pursuit of a more tolerant, more peaceful and sustainable world.

It is therefore vital that curricula should continue to evolve. This year, we reviewed our whole School curriculum to balance content, skills and experiences. We launched a new 21st Century Skills-based Senior School Curriculum, reduced the number of GCSEs taught, replaced them with the Higher Project Qualification and a Philosophy course designed and piloted by Cranleigh, UK. The time created allowed us to further develop our Careers and Work Experience Programme, we introduced

a course on Global Awareness and Citizenship and overhauled our IT capability.

Necessity leads to invention, and we have adapted and developed new ways of working, investing in the latest digital advancements. After a massive injection of IT infrastructure and devices, we also built a new IT Lab and Makerspace (a collaborative workspace for learning and sharing ideas). With a focus on ‘futureproofing’ the next generation, computer science, programming, inventing, robotics and coding, will enable greater opportunities. The working world is changing rapidly. In an era of digital transformation, digital and presentation skills will be crucial.

The sense of community that has been built through the pandemic has had a lasting effect and we feel a stronger connection with our families. Our parents have been remarkable! As a school, our Head, Heart and Hands initiative drove our wellbeing response. Mental health training for pupils, staff and parents; podcasts; recycling initiatives and environmental schemes all contributed to Cranleigh being selected as one of six World-Wide Ambassadors for Dr. Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Foundation.

We ended the year with impressive exam results, breaking all previous School records and benchmarks.

Like last year, teachers were asked to use their skill and judgement to decide what grades students deserved.

At Cranleigh, we did mock GCSE and A Level exams in February and further mock exams in May. We wanted to ensure integrity and thoroughness so that once results were published, we had absolute clarity that what pupils were awarded is exactly what they earned.

Our GCSE and A Level grades were the best in Abu Dhabi for the third year running, significantly higher than the UK national average and on a par with top selective UK independent schools.

Good times are ahead. We will eventually ride the storm and emerge stronger together, more compassionate, and more mindful of each other and our planet as a result.

ACADEMICS

Digital literacy of both staff and pupils progressed rapidly. This brought many new opportunities. Through technology and online platforms, we expanded our reach, enabling new local and international ties with others.

This year we reviewed our whole School curriculum to balance content, skills and experiences to prepare our pupils for the next stage of their education.

Online Events and Digital Competitions:

• Launch of new 21st Century Skills -based Senior School Curriculum

• Three Prep pupils won the AI technology (Minecraft) competition held by the Food and Water Security Office • 111 CAD pupils took part in the Bebras 2020 computational thinking challenge. OUTSTANDING EXAM RESULTS We maintained our strong academic performance with another year of exceptional exam results. Our GCSE and A Level grades were the best in Abu Dhabi for the third year running, significantly higher than the UK national average and on a par with top selective UK independent schools.

Yet despite these difficulties, the resilience and ingenuity that we have seen across the educational landscape has been outstanding. Caroline, who joined us at the start of Term 3 of 2021, holds a BSc Hons Degree in Psychology and Education from the University of the West of England, along with a Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) in Primary Education from the University of St Mark and St John in Plymouth, UK. She has one son aged 11 years who also attends Cranleigh Abu Dhabi.

Since the School’s inception seven years ago, we have built upon our wellbeing and inclusion journey year on year. It has evolved into three main areas: Head (Mental & Physical Health), Heart (Environment & Sustainability) and Hands (Charity & Outreach).

Through these student-led committees engaging pupils from FS1 Nursery – Sixth Form (ages 3-18), our initiatives reflect the values of self-care, wellbeing, environmentalism and charity throughout our School Community.

Student Committee Leaders, Indigo and Malak, created an official Cranleigh Abu Dhabi Wellbeing Policy with input from the whole School. The policy was created to encourage student voices and to guide the future wellbeing pathway so that we can all be part of positive change. A special thank you to Ms. Williams, Deputy Head (Wellbeing) for creating so many opportunities in this space for our Cranleigh Community.

World Mental Health Day

Mental Health & Physical Wellbeing The Head Committee focuses on wellbeing and mental health in our behavioural systems, policies, structure of the day, routines and rewards process. We have dedicated days for mental health, kindness and wellbeing which are celebrated through tailored activities and guest speakers.

Kindness Month The theme this year was Kindness Connects Us All. This whole School event saw random acts of kindness take place all month. Activities included: doing a kindness deed of the day, playing digital kindness bingo, making E-cards of kindness and a collage of hearts with kind messages. School assemblies gave a dedicated focus on the power of being considerate and how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. The event concluded with staff and pupils enjoying Pink and Red Shirt Day.

As a School, kindness, tolerance and compassion underpins so much of what we do. Through many Charity Committee and student-led projects, pupils have spearheaded community initiatives with a special focus on our facilities and support staff.

In 2019 Cranleigh Abu Dhabi was awarded the Roots & Shoots Award for our student-led initiatives surrounding wellbeing, philanthropy and environmentalism. Global awareness and environmental sustainability can be seen throughout our School Community.

During Term 2, pupils and staff enjoyed spending time in the Legacy Garden. Spearheaded by the Eco Committee, students propagated plants, developed new upcycling initiatives such as using plastic water bottles to make plant holders and bird feeders.

Pupils also devised a Plant in Every Classroom initiative and composted leftover food for the garden and School grounds. Ghaf trees (symbolising resilience and adaptability) were also replanted around the School. Senior Eco Warriors had the opportunity to take part in a socially distanced turtle patrol. This year we completed the research needed for the conservation of the Hawksbill turtles on Saadiyat Island. This included a nest excavation and releasing a trapped turtle.

UAE NATIONAL DAY 20 / T H E

National Pride

On the 49th UAE National Day we celebrated unity, resilience, positivity and progress.

Although our celebrations were different this year, the whole Cranleigh Community came together online to commemorate the UAE’s rich cultural heritage.

The event marked the 49th year since 2nd December 1971 when the seven Emirates were united under the vision and leadership of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Father of the Nation.

Named ‘Seeds of the Union’ this National Day highlighted the incredible maturing of the UAE and its inspiring journey. Our celebrations were split into six chapter videos which included beautiful poetry readings by students including Hamad A. (Year 10), who recited the poem Hai Blshahama, by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

Speeches were given by our pupil leadership team, Thea, Asia and Hamzah, and all Years showcased their colourful photos of Me in the UAE. Year 3 pupil, You You, delivered the National Anthem beautifully on the piano while other pupils shared photos of their National Day themed artwork. The whole day was rich in music and performance with staff member Zaid Al Ameri, Head of Strategic Relations and Communications, singing a traditional Arabic song, Dar Zayed, and a guest performance from professional Oud player, Mohammed Dohai. Principal Michael Wilson summed up the day with his address to the Cranleigh Community, affirming the need to draw inspiration from the past, but to also look forward to the future with kinship, hope and optimism.

INTERNATIONAL DAY

Our Global Community

International Day is a celebration of all countries and cultures that make up our fantastic diverse community.

On Thursday 11th February we celebrated our first virtual International Day.

Though we were remote learning during this time, it didn’t dampen the Cranleigh spirit as the lively celebrations continued at home. The whole Cranleigh Community came together, as families enjoyed showcasing their country’s traditional dance, dress, music and cuisine via online videos.

Pupils dressed up in their national clothes or colours and had online class discussions about their culture, language and traditions. The younger Years read stories about the importance of being different while some classes taught each other words and phrases in their native languages. In celebration of the day, local restaurants and eateries offered our Cranleigh Community discounts to sample and enjoy different international cuisines. A well-loved day highlighting the beautiful multiculturalism and togetherness of our community.

In 19th century France Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker’s daughter. The decision changes their lives forever.

Based on the classic novel, Les Misérables, by Victor Hugo, and the multi-award-winning Broadway stage show, Cranleigh took up the bold journey of performing the first virtual whole School musical in September 2020.

Actors submitted auditions online, rehearsals were conducted via remote platforms and choreography was all pre-recorded by Dance and Drama teachers

to be rehearsed at home. The audio was recorded independently of the videoed characterisation, and hundreds of hours of tracks and videos were carefully edited together to present the final performance.

This was unfamiliar territory, but the spirit of adventure, teamwork and can-do attitude meant the show did go on! A spectacular performance by all involved.

Staff Appreciation

World Teachers’ Day

The Cranleigh Community Committee (CCC) organised a surprise thank you for our hardworking staff, with delicious treat packages delivered to campus by some of our caring parents. They generously prepared an exciting raffle to raise money for the event, with some great prizes.

World Teachers’ Day is a worldwide event, and we were blown away by the incredible efforts made by pupils and parents in making our teachers feel loved.

Due to restrictions, parents did a drive by with signs on their cars while students held up the beautiful posters they had made. A big thank you to all!

Celebrating our Support Staff Cranleigh Community Shoebox Appeal Our support staff play an important role. Their contribution to campus life is huge and it is thanks to them that we enjoy a safe, clean and secure environment. We take every opportunity to show our gratitude. The Shoebox Appeal was a Charity & Outreach Committee initiative and saw pupils, parents and staff donate items such as phone cards, toiletries, stationary and packaged sweets.

Winter Dress Up Day Term 1 ended with some festive fun to get everyone in the holiday spirit. We got cosy in our colourful winter warmers and enjoyed arts and crafts to celebrate the colder season. hether you crave a swashbuckling pirate adventure on Treasure Island, want to experience exotic Africa with Ernest Hemingway, disappear down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland or search for the Gruffalo, World Book Day is a celebration of the love of books and passion for reading. This fun and happy event saw pupils across the whole School dress up as their favourite book characters for the worldwide celebration.

Leading up to the day, pupils took part in a series of literature themed activities and quizzes, as well as participating in creative writing and role-play activities.

Everyone shared their favourite reads and enjoyed playing the competition, Guess Who’s Behind That Book (Mr. Brown we know it was you!)

The Cranleigh Community also got creative by sending in photos of themselves reading in imaginative places around the UAE.

FS2 Fairytale Day Year 1 Safari Day

ENRICHMENT DAYS Our Enrichment Days help bring learning alive and allows the children’s confidence, social and critical thinking skills to be established and nurtured. These include opportunities to show empathy with a Teddy Bears’ Picnic; to explore nature, habitats, and the wider world during Animal Dress Up and Safari Day; to appreciate diversity on Elmer Day; to connect to science by participating in Pirate Day and learn about history in the Great Fire of London.

THE RIGHT START Our curriculum in Pre-Prep kindles children’s interest, engages their emotions and fuels their knowledge and communication skills.

Our topic-based approach offers our youngest learners plenty of opportunities to think for themselves, to take risks, and to engage in imaginative, first-hand experiences that all encourage their own creativity. Parallel to this is the Cranleigh Code and the development of the children’s social and citizenship skills. Each month we focus on a different Cranleigh value such as responsibility, kindness and respect.

Due to the challenges of COVID-19, this year has been different, but our children have shown such resilience and adaptability. We are so proud of you all!

FS1 Teddy Bears’ Picnic & Bear Hunt “We’re going on a bear hunt. We’re going to catch a big one….” Inspired by the book by Michael Rosen, FS1 children made masks and binoculars for their very own bear hunt. They also enjoyed a delicious picnic with some of their favourite furry friends!

FS1/ FS2 Minibeast Madness Day In celebration of our In the Garden topic, children came to school dressed as their favourite animal.

Activities included using digital skills to go on an exciting safari and building stories around small world scenes.

Why does my pirate ship float?

FS2 Pirate Day Ahoy me hearties! FS2 children loved being pirates for the day creating treasure maps and writing clues, and learning about sea creatures. The children also made their very own pirate ships, excited to test which ones would float.

Whizz Year 1 Superheroes Year 1 found out what it takes to be a superhero and celebrated their own talents and skills. They also learnt about heroes from history such as David Attenborough, Florence Nightingale, Amelia Earhart and Christopher Columbus.

Year 2 Wellbeing Warriors Children in Year 2 are encouraged to take on extra roles of responsibility including Pre-Prep Listeners, Pre-Prep Voice and Wellbeing Warriors.

These roles help cultivate positive, supportive relationships, care for others and the wider world, whilst fostering character.

Our Wellbeing Warriors designed fun fictional cartoon characters to join their team and spread the wellbeing message. These include Mr. William Wellbeing, Mrs. Love and Mr. Harry Healthy.

INDEPENDENT LEARNERS Educating the whole child is at the heart of a Prep School education. Our role at Cranleigh is to run a broad and exciting curriculum both inside and out of the classroom where each individual can flourish. This has been a remarkable year. While much was different about our School, the most important elements have remained steadfast: determination, empathy, friendship, trust and teamwork, all central qualities of being a Cranleighan. Our pupils have done us proud, yet again, rising to the challenges that the pandemic has created. Together, we have witnessed a greater sense of community and strength of character.

Problem solving, collaboration and coping when things don’t go as expected are key life skills. Our focus is on raising a creative, curious, and self-motivated generation, equipped with the tools to deal with future life.

International Schools Book Awards The International Schools Book Awards is a concept based on The Awesome Book Awards, which is hosted by our sister school, Cranleigh UK. This ongoing initiative is open to all pupils aged 9 to 13 and aims to unite young readers across the UAE and beyond through the joy of books and reading.

Prep Cross-Curricular Day Innovation and initiative were just some of the qualities encouraged on CrossCurricular Day as pupils were given the chance to recognise transferable skills and interdisciplinary links.

Year 4 Egyptian Day Egyptian Day held many ancient treasures as pupils celebrated this fascinating civilisation in character. Activities included mummifying tomatoes, designing intricate amulets and making Egyptian music.

Year 4 Vikings Year 4 Cranleigh Vikings flexed their muscles and their minds whilst learning about these brave explorers. Games, Viking brain teasers, intricate drawings of dragons and jewellery-making ended the topic in a practical and imaginative way.

Prep Crazy Hair Day Imaginations went wild as pupils and staff wore the most inspired and wacky hairpieces! Much fun and laughter boosted spirits reassuring everyone that though times can be tough, we can all give a smile and show we care.

Year 3 Rainforest Day Colourful creatures great and small crept, leapt and fluttered into the Year 3 classrooms to mark our Rainforest topic. Pupils created intricate diorama projects featuring the different layers of the rainforest plus experienced a virtual tour of the Green Planet with a live walkthrough the biodome and Q&A with Green Planet biologists.

Year 3 Romans Year 3 donned their togas, grabbed their shields and swords as they dived into history and brought the Roman era to life.

Year 4 Explorers Day

Artificial Intelligence (AI) Farm Project Years 7 and 8 were challenged to create the world’s best ecological farm using Computer Science and AI technology.

As part of a competition held by the Food and Water Security Office, UAE pupils could either draw a digital picture of their technology-enabled farm or use the electronic platform Minecraft. Cranleigh performed brilliantly and pupils Alissa G., Aurelie L., and Madeleine H., from the Eco Farming Group were among the overall champions! Winners received a monetary reward and certificates were presented at a prize-giving evening hosted by Her Excellency Mariam bint Mohammed Saeed Hareb Almheiri (Minister of State for Food and Water Security).

LEARNING FOR LIFE Against the backdrop of an ever-changing landscape, we have been inspired by how well our students have coped during this period. Cranleigh Senior offers a rich variety of opportunities and experiences, building confidence, leadership and communication skills. This year students took an active role in maintaining a Senior School presence, despite the challenges of COVID-19. Art Styles We adapted several art styles throughout the year to inspire and enthuse. This was an exciting opportunity for pupils to express themselves through artist research and interpretation.

“Creativity takes courage” Henri Matisse

2020/2021 was a period of remarkable agility for our Cranleigh Art pupils as they used technology to be innovative in Art. Though we weren’t always able to work in the Art rooms, that did not stop us from being expressive. Creativity and ingenuity were evident in our pupils’ approach as they created a range of digital and traditional art forms. They utilised new apps and technology to reflect and respond to the work of other artists in a unique way. This encouraged pupils to extend themselves beyond their comfort zones and they created original artworks that blew us away. Connection through art brings creativity and energy, empathy and optimism - it unites us all.

Senior Art Years 11 to 13 students created some fantastic artwork as part of their Component One Independent Study. Most of these pieces originated during remote learning and required a huge amount of effort. Well done to everyone!

Creative Expression The School’s advantageous location within the world’s largest single concentration of cultural spaces provides a continuous source of inspiration and artistic exposure. During lessons, pupils were encouraged to interpret and convey ideas through virtual means, reflecting on their work, taking risks and challenging differing creative viewpoints.

BSME Virtual Art Competition 2021 Cranleigh’s talented artists competed in this year’s BSME Virtual Art Competition. This was a high-profile event with participation from 450 artists across 32 schools. The theme was My Experience During COVID-19. Our pupils created some fantastic and thought-provoking pieces of art in just two hours, capturing this period in history through their own eyes. Arianna M. (Year 6) was chosen as one of the winners in the Drawing and Painting category and Giulia v.W. (Year 8) was awarded runner-up 3rd place.

PLAY ON...

Physical activity is fundamental in maintaining overall wellbeing. This year, despite the backdrop of remote learning, Physical Education was a core part of the interactive timetable with live lessons utilising creative methods of training to encourage, equip, and enthuse pupils. Regular challenges and new sporting events captured the imagination of the Community, boosting morale and maintaining a strong sense of camaraderie.

This exciting and innovative event saw Cranleigh Abu Dhabi take on Cranleigh UK and Cranleigh China in a virtual sports race. The aim was for Prep and Senior students to get to their sister schools in the UK and China before pupils from those schools got to Abu Dhabi. Staff, parents and students racked up kilometres using their tracking devices to swim, run and cycle. A staggering 5,000km was covered by the schools in each race with over 4,000 individual entries for the Race to Cranleigh.

Grit and determination resulted in Cranleigh Abu Dhabi being the first school over the line in both races. Internally, Al Sharaf was the winning House achieving the most ​​kilometres covered, closely followed by Etihad. An excellent team effort!

A fantastic opportunity for all to compete. Spirits were high at this live event with everyone cheering for their Houses. A series of challenges, races and elimination games resulted in thrilling finales where two students battled it out for the House points, roared on by their team mates.

First Year of BTEC Sport “This year saw the introduction of the BTEC International Level 3 in Sport qualification. Students explored topics such as anatomy and physiology, sports nutrition and psychology. They created presentations, vlogs, reports and a diet and hydration plan, the latter being tailored to a specific Cranleigh Sports Scholar. Next year our students will have the opportunity to engage with guest speakers from Abu Dhabi University and NYU Abu Dhabi where they will explore fitness testing and sports nutrition.” Lewis Tombs, Head of Physical Education (Years 7 to 13).

Active Movement, a new style of Physical Education Creativity, ingenuity and bags of fun were seen in abundance with a new raft of PE lessons. A mix of recorded videos using green screen technology on top of interactive live lessons was used to ensure that engagement and quality remained high. Highlights included: Cluedo Fitness - which PE teacher stole the equipment?! Escape from Hogwarts - the wizarding world of fitness, and Deal or No Deal Fitness.

Stellar GCSE PE Results Our Year 11 GCSE PE cohort achieved some outstanding grades this summer. Their hard work and dedication throughout the two year course resulted in 83% of students achieving grades 9-7 and 100% of the cohort achieving grades 9-5.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

FUTURE INNOVATION The importance of practical subjects is immeasurable. Be it a workshop, laboratory or field work, interactive learning experiences are an integral component of the student experience. Pupils are able to apply their subject and design knowledge, problem solve and develop core skills vital for the future of innovation. Practical learning also has a sizable impact on individual motivation, attainment, and employability.

Providing meaningful practical experiences during the pandemic has been tumultuous for all schools. We have had to think very carefully and adapt to new methods of delivery, modify existing resources, and develop new assessment tools. The focus in DT has been to provide challenging, engaging, and fun lessons that enable pupils to think creatively and analytically in a hands-on environment.

InvestIN Education Internship at UCL “I would recommend the internship to my peers as seeing all the different professions gave me valuable insight and highlighted what I enjoy.”

Year 12 student Maximilien G., obtained a highly covetable place at the InvestIN Education Internship in London, UK. To be chosen is a huge accolade.

Led by professional experts, the Young Engineer Programme allows students aged 12-18 an immersive experience within the industry before they reach university.

This was a huge benchmark for DT/ Engineering, with Maximilien being our first student to complete an internship in this field of study. It is fantastic evidence of how the transferable, real-world skills that we develop at Cranleigh can be applied in a real-world setting.

ADNOC Energy for Life Competition A brilliant collaborative project for our Years 5 to 8 pupils who had to reimagine and redesign the gas station of the future. The submission criteria included originality and creative thinking, sustainability, business benefits and high-quality presentation. A great showcase for pupils to demonstrate their critical thinking and design skills.

Bridge Building and the DT Olympics An exciting opportunity for Year 9 students to engage in STEM learning (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) through challenging design and make scenarios. These projects included Bridge Building and the DT Olympics. The focus was on structures and forces and students started by testing different methods using geometric shapes to add strength to structures. This learning was then applied practically when they created their bridges. The strongest bridge held over 100kg while spanning a 50cm gap. The students had just 10 lengths of square dowel (type of wood) to use for this project. Overall, the combined weight held by the Year 9 Bridge Building Project was an unbelievable 1,200kg! A fun and interactive way to end the term.

THE SHOW MUST GO ON Talent, confidence and character were continuously nurtured this year as we transitioned to a virtual timetable. Though Performing Arts were unable to offer as many live events, the whole School adapted and came up with innovative solutions for connection and collaboration.

Performances were streamed via online platforms; we included videos of recorded performances in fortnightly Senior assemblies, developed online Prep competitions and end of year recitals; coordinated an international online dance competition and staged an unprecedented virtual musical, drawing pupils from across the School. Positivity, creative flexibility and perseverance meant we could still make the magic happen.

DANCE BSME Dance We were delighted to host the third BSME Dance festival. This was the first festival held online, so though workshops couldn’t be shared live, it did mean that more schools from further afield could take part. In total, 24 schools from across the Middle East were brought together extending our creative community.

Paper Birds Drama Workshop Back by popular demand, The Paper Birds Theatre company gave an imaginative online workshop in March.

We were thrilled to be able to offer our GCSE Drama pupils, scholars and Year 9s the opportunity to learn further from these talented experts.

Pretzel Theatre The Pretzel Theatre sees young people collaborating across the world. Different groups create a performance that is sent electronically to the next group around a common theme. The next group views it, responds by devising something from it, and sends it on. The cycle continues evolving from continent to continent developing youth perspectives on global topics. Artistic pupils from Years 7 to 10 enjoyed sharing their creative energy enabling an international bond with other Drama enthusiasts.

Prep School House Music Competition The inter-House Music Competition delivered the strong message that Cranleigh Music is back with gusto!

Bursting with enthusiasm, over 50 pupils submitted a video entry which was whittled down to just 12 finalists, three from each House. Mr. Gibson and Mr. Barraclough were our guest adjudicators in a hotly contested final. Sadeeq House came out on top, with some pupils receiving a special mention from the judges (Doris C., Reem A., Arianna M., Sebastian S. and Matea F.).

Prep School Speech Day Traditionally this day features musical interludes and, even though online, this year was no exception. In between prizegiving and speeches we were treated to several excellent performances.

We rounded off the year with a joyful Summer Recital. Some of our talented musicians submitted videos of solo performances from which we created a montage to show to the entire Prep School.

Senior School In Senior School, Cathy X. (Year 11) represented Cranleigh at the Young Musicians of the Gulf competition (YMOG); the arrival of classically trained Mrs. Sell inspired pupils to engage in vocal coaching lessons and the Music Department launched music appreciation during tutor times.

Virtual Assemblies The Senior School enjoyed virtual assemblies featuring poetry, song and dance. This was a great way for our Scholars, GCSE pupils and performing arts enthusiasts to showcase their work.

WE CAN ALL MAKE A DIFFERENCE. One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to be older to make a difference. Start somewhere small. Just because we can’t do everything, doesn’t mean we can’t start somewhere. It might just be a drop in the ocean, but that ‘one drop,’ could be someone’s whole ocean.

Jordan Hattar started working in humanitarian crises at the age of 18.

He has since worked extensively on the Syrian refugee crisis and currently runs the charity he co-founded, Help4Refugees. His journey has taken him from southern California to South Sudan, from a campus in California to the Syrian refugee camps, and from studying genocide intervention at the University of Cambridge to interning with Michelle Obama’s education initiative in the White House. Jordan’s story is about compassion, service, and perseverance. As part of Cranleigh’s Open Minds Speaker series, we were honoured to welcome Jordan this year when he gave an inspiring talk to the Cranleigh Community.
