As we approach our first decade, we take this opportunity to reflect on our journey, drawing parallels between the rich heritage of the UAE and Cranleigh’s 150-year educational legacy.

At the start of this academic year, we were inspired by the words of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nayhan, President of the UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi, who urged us to excel, be determined, and invest in endeavours that benefit not only ourselves but also our families and communities.

These values align with Cranleigh’s core belief that education is a lifelong path that goes beyond academics. Our communities play a crucial role in shaping this journey, fostering a sense of belonging, identity, and meaningful connections with others.

Rooted in Saadiyat’s cultural district, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi embraces over 70 nationalities, celebrating the rich tapestry of experiences and traditions that enrich our society. Our motto, ‘Ex Cultu Robur,’ encapsulates that strength arises from cultural exchange, shared values, and mutual respect.

Through our ethos of tolerance and resilience, we aim to cultivate global citizenship and intercultural understanding, preparing our pupils for success in an increasingly interconnected world.

Our recent ADEK inspection highlighted our dedication to pupil wellbeing and pastoral care, emphasising holistic development and inclusivity.

Like the Ghaf tree, a national symbol renowned for its resilience and strength in the desert environment, each pupil’s experience at Cranleigh is fuelled by the confidence needed to thrive. Whatever their talents and passions, our pupils are guided by dedicated staff who forge strong, meaningful relationships with each individual. These relationships are the foundation of our School Community.

This year, we have witnessed outstanding achievements and milestones. In Term 1, we

organised incredible UAE National Day celebrations, with over 5,000 visitors joining us on-site. The Senior School dazzled audiences with its exceptional performance of We Will Rock You in November, garnering rave reviews. In February, our entire School came together for the first-ever whole School photo, capturing a memorable moment of unity.

Additionally, the uplifting Prep School production of Aladdin showcased our pupils’ remarkable talent. We hosted multiple British Schools in the Middle East (BSME) events and fixtures, experiencing spectacular successes and dramatic penalty shoot-out losses.

Pupils also embarked on enriching trips to fascinating destinations such as Iceland, Kenya, Austria, Oman and New York.

Moreover, we organised a momentous visit to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, where more than 1,000 pupils took over the museum for a day filled with art and culture. As a testament to the creativity and initiative of our Year 13 students, they successfully organised and ran Cranleigh Fest, our very first outdoor music festival. This exhilarating event showcased the musical talent of all involved.

Our Year 13 cohort has inspired all with their poise, assurance, and outstanding leadership. As they begin the next chapter of their lives, we celebrate their acceptance into prominent universities worldwide. Some notable destinations include Imperial College London, University College London, Kings College London, Exeter, and Bristol in the UK; Penn State, Boston and Brown in the US; Toronto in Canada; the Sorbonne and New York University Abu Dhabi, and several European universities.

As we look ahead, we anticipate continued growth and development, including the relocation of the PrePrep and the addition of new facilities to our campus.

With the arrival of our new Principal, Tracy CrowderCloe, we eagerly embrace the future, united in our commitment to educational excellence.

International Development Director at Cranleigh International How has the ‘Ex Cultu Robur’ motto transcended across continents to different Cranleigh schools? What have been the benefits for pupils?

A central message which emanates from the ‘Ex Cultu Robur’ motto is opportunity: Opportunity for our pupils to pursue cultural enrichment, not just through the broad curricula at our schools in the UK, Middle East and China, which are embedded with local cultural as well international themes, but also through multiple channels for student participation in a wide range of sports, arts, music, drama, student leadership committees, community outreach projects, outward bound, and cultural focused overseas trips operated by our schools.

We believe that Cranleigh students can ‘do it all’, and presenting them with a wide range of opportunities, whatever their age, is critical to what we do whichever Cranleigh school they belong to. Strong evidence suggests that students’ full commitment to co-curricular endeavours enhances academic outcomes rather than impedes them (yes, even in their final exam years!); it builds their confidence, grows their cultural awareness and, most importantly, enhances wellbeing. The Cranleigh International network provides a solid framework to

enhance cultural development opportunities available to pupils. Art, music, sports, and drama competitions and exchanges are taking place, as well as collaborative academic projects that connect students in different schools so that they can learn from one another.

Why do you think Cranleigh Abu Dhabi has been so successful in translating a British school into a Middle Eastern context?

It is easy to fall into the trap of believing a UK-branded international school simply transports its curriculum, pastoral and operational structures into an overseas context and hopes it will work. This was never the case with Cranleigh Abu Dhabi.

An intelligent and collaborative approach has been taken to evolve a teaching and learning model at the School that celebrates diversity and fosters mutual respect and common decency in the pursuit of excellence. Around the School, you will see multiple cues to the Cranleigh UK brand (look at the Cranleigh UK photo wall in the senior atrium, and you may see a few faces you recognise!), but these are carefully woven with a wide range of Emirati heritage and cultural installations.

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi is a true ‘international’ School with over 70 nationalities amongst our student body, but we also have a high percentage of the student population of Emirati heritage. Developing learning pathways that encourage all pupils to understand and embrace local heritage and culture is paramount. We believe this can be achieved harmoniously by preparing our students for the international futures they will face. We are extremely proud, for example, of our students achieving Oxbridge and Russell Group university places in the UK and Ivy League university places in the US, but it is also particularly pleasing to see a growing number of Sixth Form students selecting universities in Abu Dhabi and the wider UAE for the next stage of education.

What does ‘Ex Cultu Robur’ mean to you?

To many, culture refers to art, drama, or music. Certainly, in my youth, a ‘cultured’ individual was someone who was well acquainted with or actively involved in these areas. These forms of ‘culture’ may have been part of a child’s education, whether gained from home or at school, but were most probably taught in a Western context.

Today, these activities are clearly part of a Cranleigh education. However, I believe our motto has a distinct further meaning, which is highly relevant in the current environment - national culture. Understanding other nations’ (or regions’) values, religion, and history - in addition to their art, drama, and music - is part of a rounded education and broadens students’ horizons.

Why is culture so influential to the Cranleigh experience?

There are many ways of defining a ‘culture’, but one of my favourites is how we behave when no one is watching.

We all want our behaviours to reflect our core values and principles (even if we might occasionally regress!). Culture is important to Cranleigh because it brings our values and principles alive. It illustrates the standards we choose to live by and be known for and is a fundamental characteristic of being honourable, respected, global citizens.

How can living the motto ‘Ex Cultu Robur’ inspire future generations and help equip them to tackle global issues?

This broader definition of ‘culture’ fosters an appreciation of how others approach life outside our home or national environment.

This understanding promotes tolerance, facilitates cooperation, and nurtures an interest in different approaches. Global issues, by definition, affect everyone, so anything we can do to increase awareness of alternative views and values and appreciate diverse solutions to common problems will help tackle global issues faster and more effectively. The earlier children are exposed to different cultures, the more understanding they become of another way to examine a problem. As our students develop into tomorrow’s adults, I hope they will appreciate that openly working together can result in a better outcome for all.

What are the key benefits of learning from one another’s cultures and traditions, and how does it contribute to developing a global mindset?

There are so many benefits from learning from each other’s culture and traditions – I believe they enrich us enormously. Learning from different cultures and traditions enhances our philosophical perspectives, inspiring us with new ideas, interpretations, and values. The process of learning like this also helps us demonstrate respect, agility, and zest for life with all the wonderful experiences this offers. It is also a lot of fun! It powers us up … motivating us and boosting our creativity, adaptability, and techniques to thrive in wide-ranging contexts. The global citizen mindset draws on different ways of thinking and other values and priorities, making us more dexterous and successful in responding to challenges and opportunities.

Enrolment continued to grow, reaching nearly 2,000 pupils, and we eagerly anticipated the opening of the new Pre-Prep School.

We are immensely proud of our collective achievements and are grateful to our Cranleigh Community for their support in providing a well-rounded education for our pupils. A Cranleigh education goes far beyond classroom academics; it encompasses whole child development, nurturing relationships, broad experiences, enriching opportunities, and exploration of arts, sports, design, language, culture, and heritage, all of which showcase the rich tapestry of life at Cranleigh beyond the test.

The following highlights celebrate a diverse array of events, awards, and accolades across the entire School.

WHOLE SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS In 2022/23, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi reestablished the foundation of our motto, ‘Ex Cultu Robur’, by launching several new creative and innovative activities.

This year, we focused on embedding relationships and developing key 21st century skills within our whole School curriculum.

Our Core Curriculum prepares individuals for university, employment, and the world they will enter.

CRANLEIGH’S CULTURE AND HERITAGE COMMITTEE A community created to help raise awareness of national identity, Cranleigh’s Culture and Heritage Committee shares its thoughts on why celebrating the UAE’s rich culture and ethos is important and the benefits it brings to the whole School.

1. Who are Cranleigh’s Culture and Heritage Committee?

A committee of representatives from across the School was put together to develop a stronger awareness of the UAE’s culture and heritage and the importance of the UAE’s steep history in shaping its future. With the importance of ensuring this awareness was developed across all parts of school life, committee members included MOE staff, National Curriculum staff, student representatives and parents. The dedicated staff team included Tim McConnell-Wood, Amanda Mozzetti, Abdallah Al Sarhan, Laura Oliver, Noor Jihan and Emily Barr.

Fortnightly meetings allowed us to progress with several different projects and work collaboratively across the Schools to help raise awareness of national identity. (Emily Barr)

2. What does UAE national identity mean to Cranleigh, and why is it important?

Most of us at Cranleigh are guests in this beautiful country, and we must treat that with absolute respect. Embracing our national identity is important as it instils pride, connection and belonging among pupils within our diverse School community. It helps to foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.

The Cranleigh Code mirrors the fundamental values of the UAE: kindness, respect, and tolerance. We can all learn significantly from the vision that the great Sheikh Zayed left us. (Abdallah Al Sarhan)

3. How can learning about national history and traditions positively impact pupils’ personal development and cultural awareness?

4. What role does a strong national identity play in shaping pupils’ perspectives and values, and how does it influence their interactions within the School and broader society?

A strong national identity fosters a greater sense of pride, belonging and unity in your home country. It encourages individuals to engage in their community through volunteering, celebrations, and a shared respect for leaders past and present.

It also allows them to understand better their culture and, in turn, a broader perspective and respect for diversity. The collective values of a nation are essential in shaping the leaders of the future. (Emily Barr)

The EHC team worked together on the National Identity presentation. The purpose was to showcase the work already done in School to promote the UAE values alongside the National Identity Framework. It initially started as photos and a collection of evidence but soon developed into more with videos and pupil involvement. Various pupils supported the presentation with stories and opinions on the importance of national identity at Cranleigh. (Laura Oliver)

6. What initiatives are run throughout Cranleigh to actively promote national identity, and how are these threaded into the School’s everyday education?

Several initiatives run throughout the School as we take every opportunity to celebrate our host nation, whether through curriculum learning, ECAs, tailored events, cultural trips, or guest speakers.

WELLBEING

Ghaf Tree Planting An opportunity for the whole of Pre-Prep to connect with nature and the environment.

Organised as part of our Eco Week and to support the ‘Give a Ghaf’ initiative, every child had the chance to plant a Ghaf sapling. The large tree planted with the Year 1 Head, Heart and Hands Committee (HHH) will accompany us to the new PrePrep site next academic year.

A

strong focus on wellbeing refers not just to each individual but also to what we can do for others and the world around us. At Cranleigh, we believe that wellbeing, building resilience and connection, and positive mental health improve outcomes for ourselves and the wider community.

This was the first year since 2019 that we were not affected by COVID-19 restrictions. As we removed our masks in October and celebrated our smiles, the whole Community came together on several memorable occasions. It has been heartwarming to see so many pupils supporting, organising, and participating in the multiple events, from helping the support staff cricket match to Cranleigh Fest and the Make-A-Wish fundraising drive.

Kindness has been at the heart of all we have done this year. Treating others as you would like to be treated develops a positive feeling that can be seen and felt throughout the whole School.

Be Kind to Your Mind World Mental Health Day raises awareness and mobilises efforts to support this issue. Our Seniors showed their encouragement with donations to come to class in non- school uniform.

Our generous Cranleigh Community Committee (CCC) provided heart cookies to Cranleigh staff with a simple message: ‘Be Kind To Yourself. ‘ Yoga sessions at lunchtime calmed our minds and brought perspective to a busy term.

Head Heart and Hands (HHH) Committees: Pre-Prep The lessons of kindness, empathy and contributing positively to the environment around us start early. The HHH Committees meet weekly across all Schools, including our Pre-Prep children. Friendship benches around the playground beautifully painted by our HHH Champions remind us that we all have a part to play in our Cranleigh Community and beyond.

Eco Week This was a week of dedicated sustainability and love for our planet. All pupils made pledges to look after our natural world and live more consciously.

Many activities took place, reminding us all to tread a little lighter.

Turkey and Syria Earthquake Response In response to the earthquakes across Turkey and Syria, the Charity Committee raised awareness by talking in assemblies and encouraging pupils and their families to donate to the Emirates Red Crescent.

Pupils made donation boxes for those in need, which included blankets, baby formula, basic medical supplies, feminine hygiene products and other critical items.

Eco 5km Run and Beach Clean The Cranleigh Eco 5km Run and Beach Clean was a massive hit with the whole Community. Attended by huge numbers and the 5km run in record time (26 minutes!), the event was graciously hosted by Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort, with Dr Hind Al Ameri keynote speaking and covered by The National newspaper. 150kg of waste was collected and disposed of responsibly.

Thank you also for the impressive running participation from Repton International School Abu Dhabi.

Make-A-Wish Foundation In March 2023, we partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to raise money to help grant wishes for children with critical illnesses. We saw our Sixth Formers host Cranleigh’s first student-led event, Cranleigh Fest, in collaboration with the Wellbeing and Charity Committees and the CCC. The event brought live music, dancing, games, and much fun to the Cranleigh field! From this event alone, we raised over AED 26,000 for charity, coupled with the Prep School Make-A-Wish Fun Run and activities in Pre-Prep, this number grew to a staggering amount of over AED 64,000.

Ramadan Box Appeal Thanks to the donations made across the School, we created 98 packages for our Ramadan Box Appeal, which included tea, snacks and other goodies. Our Charity and Wellbeing Committee members distributed these boxes, bringing smiles to faces across the School.

Kindness Week This year’s Kindness Week observed many dedicated activities that highlighted being considerate to ourselves, each other and our planet. We saw over 1,000 kilos of dog and cat food donated to animal shelters, positive messages from our CCC, pupils sharing kind words with their peers, random acts of kindness, gifts distributed to our support staff, and Wear Your Heart Dress Down Day. Even delicious cookies were made to show our appreciation for our incredible teachers.

A collaboration between the Wellbeing and Charity Committee, along with the fantastic support of the CCC and teachers, we hosted our first cricket match for our support staff. Our support staff members signed up for cricket teams for a friendly, fun-filled day against NYU Abu Dhabi. We held various activities besides the cricket match, including henna, a vast buffet, party games and more! We take great pride in caring for our support staff and showing appreciation to them.

Healthy Lifestyles A healthy and active lifestyle positively affects our mood, sleep, productivity, and learning. Manchester City Football Schools and Healthpoint brought Manchester City Legend Joleon Lescott and Healthpoint Specialist Paediatrician Dr Maurice Khoury to School as part of their Healthy Lifestyles Programme. The children listened and discussed eating, sleeping well, and moving more. Thank you, City Football School and Healthpoint UAE, for working with us to support the health and happiness of our children.

Breakfast with the Stars, Cranleigh values Pupils are selected weekly to attend a breakfast with Mr James, Assistant Head of Prep School, in recognition of consistently demonstrating positive Cranleigh values.

Tutors carefully elected ‘Stars’ and our Heads of Year joined (and even served!) breakfasts before school. Well done to our Prep Stars for being great role models and living our Cranleigh values.

AE National Day celebrations are a highlight of the Cranleigh School calendar. This special occasion offers a unique opportunity to pay tribute to the rich and storied heritage of the UAE and to celebrate the spirit of unity, resilience, and progress that defines our host Nation.

This year’s event, held on the field, brought together families, friends, and the broader Cranleigh Community in a joyous display of Emirati heritage and hospitality.

Culinary delights took centre stage, from aromatic Arabic coffee to sweet and savoury dishes, all showcasing the authentic taste of the UAE’s culinary traditions. Various cultural activities and festivities created an atmosphere of warmth and togetherness. These included camel and pony rides, falconry, henna and calligraphy, Emirati art and music. We also held UAE National Day Assemblies, where pupils performed traditional and modern dance, delivered powerful speeches, and recited poignant Arabic poetry.

The day was a testament to the power of community, the enduring significance of tradition, and the beauty of cultural diversity and shared values.

nternational Day marks the coming together of all peoples, celebrating the vibrant blend of over 70 nationalities, languages, customs, food, and traditions that make up our amazingly diverse Cranleigh Community.

This year was the most expansive yet, as we hosted more stands than ever before. The School campus was transformed into a colourful global village; a labyrinth of stalls representing different countries covered the field, brightly decorated in their national colours. A delicious selection of food from around the globe cascaded over bench-topped displays where every flavour was available for tasting. Lively music played with dancing, games, face painting, arts and crafts.

We cannot express how grateful we are to the families who worked so hard to make this event memorable for our Community. This is what binds us. This is our ‘Ex Cultu Robur’. Colourful, diverse, joyful, inclusive, happy, varied, welcoming, and fun. It was a day when the world came to us as we celebrated our multiculturalism and the raft of advantages it brings.

ur School’s insightful Arabic activities and events foster an environment of respect, appreciation, and understanding.

They allow pupils and the wider Cranleigh Community to embark on a journey of exploration and celebration, delving into the significance of the Arabic language, history, and culture.

This year, it was fantastic to see the whole School coming together with our heartfelt contributions to national events, including Flag Day, Martyr’s Day, and National Day.

UAE Flag Day UAE Flag Day symbolises unity and peace. It reflects the values of ​​ the Spirit of the Union and the strong cohesion between the country’s people and the leadership. To mark the occasion, we came together as a whole School to share our appreciation for this great nation and raised the flag at 11 am.

Arabic Week An immersive week of Arabic language, culture, traditions, art, cuisine, stories, and games. Every year, we focus on a special appreciation and understanding of this beautiful language and the culture and depth it brings to all nationalities.

During this time, pupils enjoyed an array of activities. They watched performances of Arabic Oud, complemented by soulful poem readings. The Arabic calligraphy sessions saw them explore themed designs while glass painting showcased famous Arab personalities. Pupils also had the opportunity to design book dividers adorned with Arabic phrases, adding a touch of cultural flair to their reading materials.

Year 1 crafted beautiful Arabic name bracelets and decorated hats with their names in Arabic and the colours of the UAE flag. At the same time, FS2 had fun in traditional Arabic dress.

Throughout the campus, Arabic decorations created a reflective atmosphere, with posters featuring influential figures and colourful helium balloons adorning the reception area.

The Legacy Garden transformed into a Reading Cafe, where students delved into Arabic literature, summarising their readings while savouring refreshments.

Pupils showcased their talents during break times, from poetry recitals to Arabic singing. The Arabic hospitality corner served aromatic coffee and sweet dates, fostering a sense of unity among pupils and staff. Our School Community also had the opportunity to explore the richness of Emirati and Arabic culture. Clay workshops allowed pupils to create name tags and other Arabic-inspired creations.

Traditional games brought a sense of nostalgia and fun to the festivities.

Abu Dhabi Book Fair Pupils visited the Abu Dhabi Book Fair, explored exhibitions, and purchased Arabic and Islamic books, which enhanced their learning experiences.

Arabian Evening The highlight of this year was the Arabian Evening, a beautiful and sincere expression of the Arabic arts filled with music, poetry, and drama performances.

Ramadan and Islamic Week Ramadan is a time of peaceful reflection, empathy, and meaningful positive change.

The last week of Ramadan and Islamic Week brought a sense of connection and calm. Pupils enjoyed focusing on various Islamic art and design projects in class and understanding how they relate to the essence and values of Islam.

Arabic Spelling Bee Ready, set, spell! Year 4’s Arabic Spelling Bee was a fantastic confidence boost for our native speakers, as well as enhancing Arabic vocabulary and developing cognitive skills.

The first Parent Social of the new academic year was a huge hit. Held at the beautiful Jumeirah Saadiyat Island Resort we were thrilled to meet new parents in person and re-acquaint ourselves with current families.

Winter Festival

The Cranleigh Community Committee Winter Festival returned this year with a record number of over 1,000 attendees! With beautiful local artisan vendors, festive arts and crafts, indoor and outdoor play for all the family, winter performances, lucky dips trees and genuine community togetherness, the Winter Festival made a fabulous, festive comeback. Thank you to our parent volunteers who made this event the special family occasion we all know and love.

Dr Borba is a best-selling author, an internationally renowned educational psychologist and an expert in parenting, bullying, and character development. Dr Borba enthralled her audience with her global research, perspective, and techniques for raising thriving children.

Digital Safety Week

Among many educational activities on digital safety for our pupils, Barry Lee Cummings, Founder of Beat the Cyber Bully, led a parent talk to discuss safe internet use and cybersecurity.

Our Pre-Prep campus inspires exciting experiences. Animal Day welcomed the feathered, the furred, the clawed and the winged together in a colourful display of all varieties of the animal kingdom.

re-Prep was brimming with activity this year, filled with creativity, imagination, language, and adventure. Our focus has been on instilling confidence and nurturing connections with the world and diverse cultures around us.

The reinstatement of trips and events allowed our children to explore, be inquisitive, and develop key social skills while cultivating an appreciation for the culture and heritage of the UAE, our host country.

We enjoyed visits from theatre companies, embarked on beachside escapades, explored the world of art through gallery visits, held picnics, tea parties and iftars, and experienced lively author talks, creative dress-up events, and joyful splash days.

Research tells us that confident, happy, and secure children will thrive at school, so our aim in Pre-Prep is to expose our youngest learners to many opportunities to develop self-assurance, resilience, and collaboration. This year, we saw children developing their confidence by performing on stage, actively participating in whole school events like International Day and UAE National Day, and being involved in CCAs and their class assemblies. By focusing on developing confidence, we want to open the gateway for our children to begin the journey towards becoming global citizens who are lifelong learners, always curious and culturally aware.

As we grow and evolve, we are very excited about opening our new Pre-Prep campus in January 2024.

Bespoke learning and play spaces, custom-designed equipment, and passionate and dedicated staff extend the best of the Cranleigh Whole Child Early Years Education to our growing Community.

FS1 Nursery invited their favourite furryeared friends from home to a Teddy Bear Picnic as part of their Sing Me A Song topic. Visiting teddies assisted our FS1 children with writing and making teddy tags before being escorted to their picnic on the grass and proud teddy bear parade.

Manarat Art Studio, FS1 and FS2

Our FS1 children’s visit to the inspiring Manarat Al Saadiyat was a great cultural experience. They investigated different kinds of creative expression through a hands-on (messy!) workshop.

FS2 children worked with paint, printing, clay, and sculpture as part of their Squiggles, Dots, Splashes and Swirls topic.

Around the World Buffet, Year 1

Year 1’s Around the World Buffet displayed delicious cuisine from every corner of the globe. Sweet and savoury dishes from the seven continents were discussed (and devoured!) and pupils and parents learned about different foods and traditions from each other.

Paddington Tea Party, Year 2

Paddington Bear teaches us to be kind, curious, mannerly, and persistent. In the classroom, he helps us develop responsibility, respect, and collaboration.

The Year 2 Paddington Tea Party celebrated all the valuable lessons we have learned from this heartwarming topic.

Daddy and Me Date, FS2

A special Daddy and Me Date in FS2 welcomed our dedicated dads to spend time in the classroom. Activities included making artwork and playdough, planting seeds, storytelling, and building towers.

Animal Rumble Grumble, Year 2 Production

Year 2 animals of the grasslands feared a strange, distant rumbling. As Cranleigh Auditorium transformed into the African plains, wind dancers, drummers, and confident narrators told the story of how the lions, zebras, giraffes, monkeys, elephants, and colourful birds found the courage to confront the terrible danger coming closer. And with the clever words of Ghubari, the wise old man, all was well again on the Year 2 savannah. A beautiful, moving, and joyous performance from our incredible Year 2s. Encore!

Pre-Prep Concerts

Pre-Prep musical performances are a true delight. It takes courage and confidence to perform in front of parents, friends, and teachers, especially in the grand Cranleigh auditorium! We are so proud of our PrePrep musicians, who all sang brilliantly during their choir performances and winter and end-of-year concerts. A big thank you to everyone involved, as the live bands, creative props, lights, and snow machine made this year extra special.

Beach Day, Year 2

We are privileged to be close to the beautiful Saadiyat Beach with its pristine white sand, clear water, frolicking dolphins, nesting hawksbill turtles and the occasional wandering gazelle. Year 2’s trip to the beach was part of Eco Week and our Under and Over the Sea topic.

The children learned the importance of ocean life, explored the sands, built sandcastles, and felt how the senses can inspire poems.

Poetry Café, Year 2

Inspired by their Beach Day, Year 2’s Over and Under The Sea topic ended in a nautical Poetry Cafe with sharks, starfish, jellyfish, mermaids, octopus and more. Sea creatures of all kinds expanded our minds through poetry, storytelling, role-play and creative expression while developing the children’s confidence, teamwork, and perseverance.

Ronda Armitage, Author Talk, Year 2

We were delighted when Ronda Armitage read us one of her many books, The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch, and discussed Mr Grinling’s lunch dilemma. Year 2 got to ask questions and share their own artwork based on a personalised picture the illustrator sent us. Ronda wrote The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch in 1977, which is as relevant now as it was then. Thank you, Ronda, for supporting our Year 2 learning.

Pre-Prep Splash Day is when you get to thoroughly soak your teachers and end the year with a whole morning of fun and laughter – and lots of lovely cool water. At Cranleigh Pre-Prep, it’s not summer until you make a splash!

Jubail Mangroves Trip, Year 1

The mangroves play an essential part in the UAE’s ecosystem. On their trip to the Jubail Mangroves, Year 1 children learnt about flora and fauna found there. They enjoyed spotting the different animals and fish on the mangrove walkway and created terrific artwork, which the Senior School Arts Department facilitated.

t the start of the year, our daily lives returned to normalcy, marked by removing masks and a welcome absence of COVID-19 discussions. School life once again became a bustling calendar filled with House competitions and sports fixtures (Cranleigh hosted the BSME Under 11s and Under 15s Games plus BSME Dance). We saw unbridled energy and sheer joy during Aladdin, our first Prep School production since 2019, plus a wide range of cultural trips and visits. Curiosity, energy, teamwork, and a sense of service to others underpin all we do.

Throughout the 2022/23 academic year, our central focus has been nurturing confidence and personal growth in every individual. With the pandemic-related restrictions firmly behind us, the Cranleigh school experience has regained its diverse and vibrant essence. Our pupils have engaged in many opportunities, starting out on their unique paths to self-assurance. Additionally, the full resumption of our Co-Curricular offering has allowed pupils to embrace new challenges and cultivate character, leadership skills, and meaningful relationships in various areas of interest.

The return of educational trips and events has played a pivotal role in expanding our pupils’ horizons and fostering a deeper understanding of the world around them. Through these experiences, they have had the chance to explore Arabic culture and the history and heritage of the UAE. Their appreciation for its cultural richness has flourished with each event they have participated in, gaining insight and perspectives that bring colour and ideas to our learning.

Cultural understanding, respect, empathy, and tolerance are fundamental at Cranleigh. By concentrating on developing confidence and momentum, we aim to empower our pupils to become well-rounded, academically proficient, naturally curious, and globally engaged individuals.

It has been a year marked by tremendous growth, and we are thrilled to witness the profound impact of these experiences on our children. As the Prep School continues to expand, so do our ambitions.

Colour Run, Year 3 Inspired by the colourful Hindu Holi festival, Year 3 (and some very game Year 3 parents) sprinted around the Sports Field for our Colour Run. Year 5 was on powder paint patrol, determined to ensure everyone went home as multicoloured (and happy) as possible.

Abu Dhabi Children’s Library, Year 3 Year 3 enjoyed an explorative trip to the Abu Dhabi Children’s Library, delving deep into fact and fiction in both English and Arabic. Sat among the dune-inspired landscape, pupils immersed themselves in various books about the UAE and its captivating culture and history. The children also undertook a book hunt searching for UAE elements across literature.

The Year 4 Show: A Dr Seuss Celebration The Year 4 Show, A Dr Seuss Celebration, portrayed seven poetic and meaningful tidings with energy, sincerity, and lots of Dr Seuss colour.

ENRICHMENT WEEK A chance for pupils to approach learning from a fresh perspective, delve into new concepts, and venture beyond the conventional boundaries of their subjects. Innovative thinking occurs when we step outside the ordinary and our comfort zones. All Years have opportunities to engage in new activities and challenges throughout Enrichment Week, sharpening their leadership and communication skills and stretching imaginative and critical thinking.

Emirates Park Zoo, Year 3 Enrichment Week presents extensive learning opportunities outside the classroom. Year 3 met several new friends at the Emirates Park Zoo and focused on looking after our environment and animals.

Egyptian Day, Year 4 Egyptian Day is part of Enrichment Week at Cranleigh and a curriculum highlight. Pupils celebrated this fascinating era by putting themselves in the shoes (papyrus sandals or bandages in some cases) of this great civilisation. Mummies, Pharaohs, Cleopatra, archaeologists, and sphinx all claimed their place for an engaging day of Ancient Egyptian activities.

Qasr Al Watan, Year 6 Pupils shared in the UAE journey, marvelled at the vast and timeless library and absorbed the phenomenal architecture and design of the Great Hall before gathering and appreciating the Founder’s Memorial. A culturally rich, engaging trip immersing our pupils in our Nation’s heritage.

Kayaking in The Eastern Mangroves, Year 4 ‘A day without walls.’ Year 4 kayaked out into nature and learned about the UAE Mangroves, their survival techniques, their many residents (fish, birds, crabs and even jellyfish) and why protecting this intricate and nurturing ecosystem is so important.

A fun day full of collaborative and explorative learning.

Prep School Captains Prep School Leadership roles play a huge part in modelling strong values and high standards. Prep Heads and Deputy Heads of School represent the School in various events, present excellence in all aspects of school life and act as a voice for the Prep pupils, among many other responsibilities.

Prep House and Deputy House Captains foster House spirit and participation. Inclusion is paramount, and our Captains did an amazing job.

Enrichment Week, Year 8 Enrichment Week at Cranleigh is about learning in new ways and opening the mind to new experiences.

Year 8 did just that by incorporating everything from the business of Formula 1 at the Yas Marina Circuit to raft building, water polo, kayaking, volleyball, climbing wall, archery, and human foosball. Thank you, Yas Marina Circuit and The Club Abu Dhabi, for an unforgettable few days.

UAE Team Emirates Youth Cycling Academy, Year 5 Designed to build confidence, fitness and improve bike competency, Year 5 enjoyed professional cycling coaching from the UAE Team Emirates Youth Cycling Academy. This three-week programme was dynamic, fun, and full of success stories of pupils improving their cycling proficiency.

Stone Age to the Iron Age, Year 5 During this fascinating topic, pupils designed and made their own Stone Age survival tools showcased in their Stone Age Museum, studied Stone Age settlements, and creatively replicated their versions of Cave Art. The highlight was Stone Age Day, where pupils in costume brought the Stone Age (across its three time periods) into campus for a captivating day of immersion.

Explorers, Year 4 Year 4’s topic of Explorers ended with a dress-up day in tribute to all pioneers through land, sea, space, and time who went beyond their fears and perceived boundaries in search of discovery and progress. Pupils also ‘transported’ themselves to a place they would like to explore whilst in costume by learning to use a green screen on iMovie.

SENIOR SCHOOL Cranleigh Fest

Cranleigh Fest marked a joyous occasion for the entire Community as the School campus transformed into an outdoor extravaganza of music and entertainment.

Organised by the Senior School Leadership Team, this inaugural event showcased the talents of pupil performers and brought together friends and families for an evening of fun and celebration.

From lively performances to delicious food stalls and games, Cranleigh Fest created a vibrant atmosphere that lifted spirits after the challenges of COVID-19. The event not only united the School but also demonstrated the impactful guidance and initiative of the Senior School Leadership Team. (More on page 86.)

uring the 2022/23 academic year, the Senior School grew significantly, not just with pupil numbers or exam courses but also with ambition and expectation. Cranleigh has always been a busy school with significant outcomes. The nature of our collective mindset is to always push for more. I feel incredibly proud to be Head of the Senior School and supported by encouraging and engaged staff, pupils and parents who buy into this ethos. It is crucial that we keep reviewing where we are and striving for excellence, and this year typified this for me.

With this approach, it is easy to become insular and look at our own selves and our journeys. Whilst this is natural, it is also essential to reflect on our position and our impact on others and the broader community beyond Cranleigh. I spoke with the School Community about this last year when discussing privilege and its meaning. Our pupils are in an incredibly privileged position, and with that privilege comes responsibility. Some people become dependent on their advantages and rely on them like a crutch. Others embrace it with a sense of purpose and use their privilege and the opportunities it affords to make a difference beyond the confines of their own self. It is our position as a school to nurture the latter and enable pupils to find the confidence and courage to discover who they truly are and meaningfully impact the world ahead of them.

Enrichment Trip - Kenya

Scholars’ Welcome Evening

An exclusive and interactive Scholars’ Welcome Evening was held to showcase the talents and achievements of current Scholars and officially inaugurate new ones into the Cranleigh Scholarship Programme. There was a real buzz across the atrium whilst the Community enjoyed watching some pupils in action in various guises (from shooting penalties to racing cars to watching drama students to a dance-off). Scholars add energy and vibrancy to the School Community spirit, illustrate a diversity of talents and encourage excellence among their peers.

A Scholarship Award at Cranleigh is an honour, and the experience is unique.

In February 2023, 60 pupils from Years 9 to 13 and eight teachers visited Voi, Kenya. During our week-long stay, we engaged in various projects at two local schools, such as painting classroom walls, making bricks, and improving wheelchair access ramps. The highlight was interacting with the local students, who, despite being younger, enthusiastically practised English with us. Additionally, CAD pupils made friends through daily football matches—lots of fun and very competitive! Our accommodation was basic, but we soon adjusted and appreciated the clear night skies, offering stunning views of the Milky Way. Immersed in nature, we could hear distant animal sounds, creating unforgettable memories. Overall, the week was a rewarding experience, with our CAD pupils stepping out of their comfort zones and gaining valuable life lessons.

Over 100 Bronze, Silver and International Awards students completed their Practice Adventurous Journey Expeditions. Pupils took to the great outdoors and navigated to camp and beyond. World Scholars Cup, Years 8 to 12

The World Scholars Cup celebrates learning and is a chance for pupils to collaborate on serious global issues through debate, essay writing, quizzes, scholastic challenges, and research.

Cranleigh pupils from Years 8 to 12 actively participated in this expansive opportunity. We are so proud of how they represented Cranleigh and grew as a team. Numerous medals and trophies returned with our pupils across many categories. Well done!

Model United Nations, Years 8 to 12 Over 50 Cranleigh pupils participated in the 2023 Model United Nations. Hosted this year at NYU Abu Dhabi, Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations where pupils play the role of delegates from different countries and attempt to solve real-world issues with the policies and perspectives of their assigned country. Though the assignments were challenging, several of our pupils gained honourable mentions. This was an expansive learning experience.

Year 9 students were exclusively invited to marshal and score for the world’s leading golfers over a four-day event at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

Twelve of our Cranleigh Year 12 students were honoured with an invitation to intern at the 13th IRENA Assembly. The event was held under the overarching theme of ‘World Energy Transition – The Global Stocktake’. Active participation experiences like this push our students outside their comfort zone, offer exposure to global perspectives and open a default pathway of critical thinking for realworld solutions. Year 12 Student Manal attended the conference and commented that it was the first time she felt she was making a difference beyond the school gates, and it was so exciting to be at this global level.

Using a blended approach of skills teaching and independent learning, the Cranleigh Core Curriculum puts the student at the heart of their learning process. These skills are crucial for success firstly at university and then in the modern world as confident, resilient and mindful global citizens ready to shape the world of their future.

THE BEST SCHOOL FOR POST-16 EDUCATION AND SIXTH FORM IN THE UAE 2022/23.

Students Georgia and Mona had the incredible privilege of attending The Forbes 30/50 Summit at the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, which took place during International Women’s Day in March this year. Relating iconic female leaders and their sense of responsibility helps frame and inspire the work that our student leadership does at School. Following the main event, a breakout session was held at CAD where the Year 12 and 13 girls could sit in workshops with many leading global entrepreneurs, businesswomen and leaders. The Forbes women commented that the Cranleigh students were remarkably self-assured and eloquent individuals who had impressed them hugely.

Year 12s were invited to attend exclusive Student Experience Days at Abu Dhabi University and NYU Abu Dhabi. Students visited the Mechanical, Chemical, and Aviation Engineering Departments, Health Sciences, Social Sciences, Engineering Design studios, and state-of-the-art indoor sports facilities. An informative admissions workshop also gave valuable insights into the application process and university life in general. Thank you to all those involved.

Former Cranleigh Sixth Form student Lydia Sanz Lozano attended COP27 to discuss Youth Adaptability and Resilience for a Sustainable Future in Africa. Lydia cites the UAE as a champion of meaningful youth engagement and actively participates in youth-led conferences for renewable energy as a key speaker and moderator. She generously shared her experiences of the IRENA Assembly with our Year 12 IRENA students. As a participant in IRENA’s Inaugural Youth Forum in 2020, she was selected as the Youth Representative to deliver the speech on the outcomes during the Opening Ceremony of IRENA’s 10th Annual Assembly. We follow Lydia’s purposeful journey with interest as she prepares to host global Ministers for COP 28. We are proud to have enjoyed her contributions as a Cranleigh Sixth Former.

A

rt at Cranleigh continues to inspire and evolve.

From outstanding GCSE and A Level results to collaborative Year 1 and 2 art projects, creativity does not sleep. It has been a fantastic year, and we ended the academic period 2022/23 with 12 CCAs across three sites catering to over 200 art pupils in any given week.

The Cranleigh Art curriculum is both innovative and strategic in teaching pupils the skills required to be a true 21st century creative art student. With the cultural district on our doorstep, we have an opportunity to grow in unison with the area, expanding the possibilities of what is available to our budding artists. Trips to the Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Fair and the New York International Art Trip are just the beginning.

Louvre Abu Dhabi Art Trip

The Art Department led the whole School takeover at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The day was a roaring success that we intend to repeat. Being so close to the heart of internationally renowned creative spaces like the Manarat Al Saadiyat and the Louvre Abu Dhabi brings many opportunities for our pupils to explore, expand and push their artistic limits. The experiential learning experience of the museum provides links to the Cranleigh curriculum for all students to explore first-hand.

Photography Workshop, The Canon Big Day of Fun

Ignite Creative Academy gave a brilliant hands-on Canon Academy Photography workshop for our Prep, Senior and Sixth Form pupils and their families. A first for Cranleigh, the workshop comprised several practical learning stations to explain shutter speed, work with aperture, understand Lightroom editing and nail the perfect portrait lighting. The outcome was fantastic! The day was an ALDAR Academy of Excellence event bringing together, Al Yasmina and Al Bateen schools, as well as ourselves.

New York International Art Trip

This year, over 90 pupils from Cranleigh visited New York on our International Arts visit. This trip was a great opportunity for all pupils to experience the excitement of the city, visit cultural landmarks, and soak up world-renowned art in the flesh.

MOMA, the MET, and the Guggenheim Museum were just a few of the galleries visited. Trips to Broadway and the Statue of Liberty ensured the experience was a great success.

New Cranleigh Art Scholarship Programme

Our first eight-week programme of drawing in the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Pupils had the opportunity to work in a classical manner, drawing from observation, in the museum.

These preliminary studies formed the basis of artworks to be developed throughout the year. Our end-of-year exhibition showcased this work and gave a glimpse into the creative process and how the pupils developed their ideas.

Art Week

A riot of colour, creativity, and fun! Prep and Senior arts events and activities were run across the whole School. One highlight was the photography pop-up booths set up at lunch and break time to capture the pupils’ portraits. These images were then stitched together to create an artwork in the form of the UAE flag. A Banksy competition ruled in the Prep School as pupils tried to uncover his true identity.

As part of Cranleigh’s Art Week, Years 6 and 8 and Years 10 to 12 had a special preview trip, immersing them in the international, modern, and contemporary Art Fair at Abu Dhabi Art. In this city-wide celebration of art, culture and community, pupils were taken on a private, interactive guided tour of the galleries and worked with professional artists in a workshop designed around one of the themes in this year’s exhibition. All pupils were ambitious, critical thinkers, and a positive social environment was created on the day.

Bag Head Project, Year 3

Pupils created self-portraits whilst exploring the theme of Identity. Using an everyday brown paper bag and oil pastels, they focused on blending and application techniques. This project concentrated on promoting the skills of confidence, collaboration, creativity, and ambition.

The outcomes quickly exhibited our pupils’ artistic and personal growth.

BSME Art Competition 2023

Another brilliant performance by 30 of our talented Cranleigh artists who participated in this regional competition.

The theme for 2023 was ‘Peace’, and our pupils created meaningful and expressive art pieces in just two hours. Cranleigh has a proud tradition of positioning in this competition, and this year was no different. Eva B. won the Years 7 to 9 category with her epic water and pencil piece, and Mia C. came second in the Years 10 to 11.

Outstanding GCSE, IGCSE and A Level Results

The dedication and hard work of both pupils and the Art teaching staff culminated in outstanding results across GCSE, IGCSE and A Level in Art & Design, Fine Art & Photography. 100% A* to B We are incredibly proud of our photography students. Emi E. graduated from Cranleigh this year and is now studying in Paris.

t has been an exciting year for our Design and Technology Department as pupils have worked on challenging, practical cross-curricular projects and participated in inventive showcases. The achievements of our 2022/23 Design and Technology pupils have been truly remarkable, reflecting their dedication, creativity, and technical prowess. These students have demonstrated exceptional growth in critical thinking and problem-solving skills, competence in using tools and machinery, and the ability to create orthographic sketches and render models that meet international standards.

Thanks to competitions and experiences like F1 in Schools and Cubes in Space, pupils have been presented with real-world design problems, requiring them to navigate constraints, anticipate challenges, and devise effective and innovative solutions. They have learned to approach problems systematically, breaking them down into manageable steps and applying their technical knowledge and logical reasoning to address them successfully. F1 in Schools Our second year of entering the F1 in Schools National Finals for Senior (Rookie) and Prep (Ethara) categories. In this competition, pupils design, engineer, and race compressed air-powered miniature Formula 1 cars. This global initiative promotes STEM engagement, fostering essential skills in engineering, aerodynamics, CAD modelling, manufacturing, teamwork, and project management. Advanced design software enhances analytical and problem-solving abilities. Beyond technical aspects, participants showcase creativity by designing liveries and marketing materials.

Additionally, they develop presentation and communication skills through project presentations to judges and peers.

Our Year 12 BTEC Engineering cohort achieved 100% Distinction grades for their first unit, Mechanical Principles.

GCSE Results 2023 Extremely high standard of practical work produced by our GCSE DT pupils, including projects aimed at improving home study and working environments, increasing attendance at open days, and developing ways to promote sustainable initiatives - a positive return to the full practical evidence post-COVID-19.

Cubes in Space Our STEM Scholars won this competition and had their experiments sent into space! This international STEM initiative empowers pupils to engage in hands-on space science by designing and building experiments to launch into space aboard NASA suborbital or orbital missions.

Pupils develop critical skills in experiment design, data analysis, and scientific communication. The competition fosters creativity and innovation, encouraging pupils to push the boundaries of scientific inquiry. One of the winners was Vedha K., now in Year 10. Her project question was ‘The effect of ultraviolet radiation on different electrical wire coatings’.

Art and DT Showcase ‘Cranleigh Creates’ was an inspiring display of GCSE and A Level creative expression across different forms of Art and Design Technology. From conception prototypes to complete design portfolios, this was an authentic example of bringing learning to life. We were delighted that this event could be shared with parents and visitors, allowing pupils to communicate their design concepts effectively and present their ideas in a visually compelling manner.

NEW for 2023 This year, we launched several new initiatives: - ECAs: Robotics, F1 in Schools (Test Driver Category) and Autonomous Racing - Autonomous Racing: We are one of only 10 schools in the UAE to be invited to participate in a brand-new racing event linked to autonomous racing. This is still in its infancy, but watch this space!

Our first Senior School Musical since 2019!

In November, our talented performers took the audience on a futuristic journey to reclaim ‘real music’ on Planet Mall in a phenomenal extravaganza of dance and music. The storyline weaved several Queen songs with choreography played by the onstage band, creating a rocking atmosphere as Galileo Figaro fought against massproduced pop music. Bringing a live event of this size to Cranleigh was extraordinary; it sold out in hours and generated a huge buzz in the Community. Bravo to our outstanding cast, who poured every ounce of Rock n Roll into this energetic showcase of Cranleigh’s talent. An incredible project to participate in.

Prep School Production: Aladdin There’s a whole new world beyond the palace walls, and Cranleigh Prep School found it! Vibrant colour and high adventure brought a magical, fantastical production to the Cranleigh Auditorium. With confidence, imagination, and absolute dedication to their art, we are proud of our Prep School performers, who worked tirelessly to deliver an utterly dazzling show.

Arabic Production Our Arabian Evening was a beautiful celebration of the Performing Arts. The event featured fascinating showcases, including regional dance styles, a compelling drama that adapted the first story of the Sheikh Zayed trilogy, The Lucky Star, soul-stirring Arabic singing, and poetry from the Emirate Oral tradition.

This artistic amalgamation celebrated the depth and beauty of Middle Eastern culture, leaving the audience moved and enlightened. A true testament to the Arts’ power and significance in Emirati culture.

“Having a cast of over 100 from Years 5 to 8 shows the passion that pupils have for the Performing Arts. Seeing every child on stage for the finale, singing together, was a moment I will never forget.”

BSME Dance The event featured over 100 talented pupils from 11 schools, offering an electrifying display of passion and creativity. Themed ‘A Night at the Movies,’ participants wowed the audience with performances refined through five intensive dance workshops. A highlight was the celebratory meal, featuring a captivating mob dance that symbolised the joy and unity of the event. This marked the triumphant return of live performances for the fifth BSME Dance event at Cranleigh, surpassing previous years. We are immensely proud of our Cranleigh Senior and Junior teams, securing third place overall. We’ll host BSME Dance again next year and a CAD Dance show to celebrate our dancers’ talent.

This year was extraordinary, with dance taking centre stage in many of the School’s activities. The BSME Dance weekend was outstanding as we welcomed 11 schools to our campus. Another highlight was watching our talented dancers display their skills in spectacular performances at Central Park. They also shone on the global stage at the Urdang International Dance Competition.

Over 10 dance companies showcased passion and creativity, with notable performances at Warner Brothers Studio and various school events.

I am immensely proud of our Dance Scholars who have become inspirational leaders in dance and the broader School Community. Our Dance programme has enriched lives, highlighting the Arts’ potential for fostering creativity, discipline, and teamwork.

Looking ahead, I am eager to see our Dance programme continue to flourish. Excitingly, we’ll introduce Dance in Sixth Form next year, solidifying our position as the only school in Abu Dhabi offering Dance at both GCSE and A Level, providing a complete Performing Arts pathway in Sixth Form.

Dance GCSE Results This year’s GCSE results were remarkable, with 40% of our pupils achieving the highest grade of 8 (A*), demonstrating exceptional dedication and talent. Additionally, every pupil in the class earned outstanding grades between 7 and 8 (A*-A). We are overjoyed to have the largest uptake in Dance GCSE next year.

Performing Arts Tour to New York, Years 9 to 13 In February, pupils had the privilege of performing at the Empire State Building, dancing in Central Park, and exploring iconic Broadway. The unique opportunity to learn routines from Broadway actors enriched their expertise, enhanced their musicality and instilled a deep sense of accomplishment and pride in their craft.

Drama As the incoming Heads of Prep School and Senior Drama, it has been a motivating inaugural year. Seeing a renewed freedom in performance has been inspiring, fostering confidence in practical work. Pupils expressed themselves through acting, voice, and physicality, engaging audiences and participating in workshops, theatre visits, and whole-School events like Cranleigh’s Got Talent and headline musicals.

Notable highlights include the Years 7 and 8 Drama Club adapting Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Year 2 Pre-Prep pupils. We could almost taste the chocolate river! Years 3 and 4 Performing Arts CCA enjoyed a workshop performance of Dragon Day and revelled in the catchy tunes. Our GCSE pupils showcased powerful scenes from their set texts, whilst A Level students created a charming and inventive devised piece, The Melancholy Death of Oyster Girl, based on the eponymous Tim Burton ballad, utilising Kneehigh’s exuberant blend of dance, music and puppetry. With numerous achievements, we look forward to expanding opportunities for our actors and performers.

Paperbirds Workshop, Years 10 to 13 This year’s workshop was an elegant, energetic, and colourful expression of drama in many forms and across age groups. It was even more enriching to have practitioners from the UK share their expertise in person at School.

Splendid Theatre Workshop, Year 12 We were delighted to host the founder of Splendid Theatre, Kerry Frampton, for an online workshop on their unique style. Using a highly creative approach to physical theatre, they employ distinctive motifs and gestures to create a universal language. Kerry provided valuable insights to our A Level students, focusing on their past production of Woyzeck, a script chosen by our students for their A Level practical performances.

Year 4 Show: A Dr Seuss Celebration Year 4 presented a captivating show inspired by Dr Seuss, bringing his timeless tales to life with vibrant colours and whimsical props. The enchanting performance delivered a heart-warming message of acceptance and embracing uniqueness, leaving a memorable impression that echoed the spirit of Dr Seuss’s limitless imagination.

The 2022/23 academic year has been a resounding success for Cranleigh’s Music Department. Our pupils have achieved remarkable milestones, demonstrating exceptional talent and dedication. There has been much to celebrate, from participation in national composition awards to instrumental competitions and international tours. A noteworthy addition to our curriculum was the introduction of the Wind Band Programme in Year 5, enriching the musical journey of our youngest talents and fostering a deep appreciation for ensemble playing. This initiative nurtured technical proficiency and encouraged teamwork and camaraderie among our budding musicians. We are excited to announce that the programme will expand in the upcoming academic year, evolving into a comprehensive two-year programme, ensuring even more significant musical development for our pupils.

by Herve Koubi, a captivating ensemble piece reflecting on heritage and identity.

We also experienced The Last Ward

by Yaa Samar Theatre Company, an international group of physical performers exploring the reflections of a man in his last days. These dynamic performances were particularly inspiring for our pupils, who choreographed and devised physical theatre pieces for their GCSE and A Level practical components.

Scholars’ Visit: The Lion King Our Drama Scholars visited the Etihad Arena, where they met cast members and the creative team from the visiting production of Disney’s The Lion King.

Pupils explored actor training, character development, costume design, and show logistics. They even enjoyed a private performance of the song Can You Feel the Love Tonight?

S4K Performances, Years 1 to 4 Pupils were enthralled by S4K Theatre Company’s performances of Treasure Island and Little Red Riding Hood.

With dynamic sets, captivating actors, and interactive moments, the classic adventures entertained and educated, sparking enthusiasm for storytelling and the magic of theatre.

Abu Dhabi Young Musician Competition For the second consecutive year, we proudly had finalists in this esteemed competition, showcasing the outstanding musical prowess within our School.

Prep School pupil Hayley S. won the Intermediate Strings category and participated in the Grand Final.

Outstanding Music Exam Results An impressive 40% of the cohort achieved the highest possible Grade 9, with no pupil falling below a 7. Furthermore, Ollie Gullick from our inaugural A Level Music class was accepted at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Congratulations to all.

eflecting on another remarkable year of school sports at Cranleigh, we are filled with pride and excitement for the incredible achievements and moments that have unfolded. Since September, a staggering 80 teams competed across 10 different sports, showcasing our pupils and staff’s unwavering dedication and passion.

Amidst several memorable performances, one of the standout highlights was the resounding success of our golf team. They conquered the competition and emerged victorious in the highly competitive BSME Golf Championships. This significant achievement is a testament to the talent and hard work exhibited by our team and Golf Scholars.

Another inspiring feat was witnessed on the netball courts, where our U15 and U19 Girls’ teams achieved incredible results. They displayed outstanding teamwork, resilience, and skill, ultimately claiming the top spot in their respective netball competitions at the BSME Games. The win percentage across our 14 teams was a brilliant 78 per cent.

The magic of sports at Cranleigh extends beyond golf and netball. In the Junior NBA finals, our U14 Girls’ basketball team etched their names in the annals of sporting glory. Mya’s unforgettable buzzer-beater shot secured the championship title, propelling the team to victory and inspiring all those who witnessed the match. This shining moment exemplified the dedication and potential present within our basketball programme.

Our swim teams, with their performances, have also been a source of immense pride. At both the BSME Championship and the ADISSA Gala, our swimmers showcased their aquatic skills, determination, and competitive spirit.

We’ve witnessed more success in football, where our U13 Girls’ team lifted the ADEK Cup in March. Our cricket, rugby and volleyball programmes have all grown in participation numbers and made excellent progress.

As a School Community, we firmly believe in the power of sports to unite players, shape lives, and nurture well-rounded individuals. Our teams’ achievements and triumphs this year have further reinforced this conviction.

Looking ahead to the 2023/24 season, we eagerly anticipate creating countless more magical moments, fostering personal growth, and providing opportunities for all pupils to thrive in competitions, tournaments and games.

Jr NBA Championships We won the U14 Jr NBA Girls’ Championships with a buzzerbeater shot by Mya D. (Year 9) against American Community School of Abu Dhabi. This was a two-month championship, and the girls played seven times, winning all seven matches.

Netball

Swim Squad

Our netball programme has gone from strength to strength. We only lost one game out of the three BSME Games netball tournaments in 2023, winning two of the three competitions and finishing as finalists in the U13 Games. We secured a 78 per cent average win ratio across our 14 netball teams.

A fantastic year for the swim team, with over 80 swimmers participating in 18 galas. Our best swimmers won numerous medals at the BSME Swim Championships and the ADISSA Championships. The girls-only team finished second, and our combined boys’ and girls’ teams finished fourth overall in the ADISSA Swim Championships.

Summer Indoor Athletics Competition In Term 3, we hosted two competitions that united the whole Cranleigh Community. In the Indoor Aldar Athletics Competition, we finished first place out of the eight schools participating, with many of our pupils finishing in the top six. Before this, we hosted a similar event for all pupils in Years 3 to 6. Each competition saw 240 athletes take part.

Cranleigh not only won the overall competition, but we also had some standout performances by our players; Sara A. came first and Hayun C. came second in the girls’ competition, Thomas N. came third in the boys’ competition, and Zurich K. also came third in the Gross competition. t Cranleigh, we have long believed that learning extends far beyond the confines of the classroom.

This philosophy is deeply ingrained in our ethos, where significant weight is given to Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs).

CCAs are, therefore, crucial to the Cranleigh experience.

These activities are more than just extracurricular pastimes; they are integral to the holistic development of every individual. Our richly diverse CCA programme is rewarding and inspiring. It allows pupils to develop confidence, character, and commitment by exploring new interests and talents. With a complete and broad schedule across the whole School, our co-curricular offering aims to inspire, stretch, and challenge.

It has been a blockbuster year regarding the number and sheer variety of CCAs and trips available. From arts and crafts to chess, sports to coding, beach running to karate, our pupils have developed valuable social and interpersonal skills and had the chance to build life skills through challenges and immersive experiences. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by both our pupils and the staff delivering these activities have been truly remarkable, and it has been a joy to witness the growth and progress within them.

Pupils have also had the opportunity to gain their Bronze, Silver, or Gold DofE International Award. Students learned to pitch tents, cook, hike, and navigate their way around the landscape of the UAE. We look forward to another year of providing our pupils with opportunities to explore their interests, discover their passions, and develop vital skills that will prepare them for the future.

I

t has been another spectacular year for pupils and their Houses. The House system sets a framework for teamwork and camaraderie in all three Schools, with a vibrant programme of internal competitions in sports, the arts and academia. Events range in size and significance from interHouse spelling bees, quizzes, and baking to sports days, debating, talent competitions and music events.

Children derive a great sense of community and wellbeing from belonging to a House. It gives pupils excellent opportunities to develop responsibility and leadership skills. It encourages them to demonstrate our Cranleigh values and to be positive and supportive community members.

Al Sharaf:

CAD’s Got Talent, Years 3 to 8

Pupils never fail to wow us with Cranleigh’s Got Talent. Such an impressive array of energetic, enthusiastic, vibrant, and creative flair. Thank you to all our Prep pupils who participated. After much deliberation between the judging panel, Sadeeq (for Years 3 to 5) and Al Sharaf (for Years 6 to 8) were declared the winners. Nice work, talented Prep School!

Children jumped, crawled, zig-zagged and hopped for their Houses in the Years 1 and 2 House Winter Run. A brilliant display of teamwork combined with individual effort, agility, drive, supportive camaraderie, and pure glee! A thrilling event to end the term. The Great Cranleigh Bake Off, Years 3 to 8 Clever creative concepts linking House colours and themes were baked into exquisite and delectable cakes. This is a favourite House competition for many... especially the taste-testing judges!

Poetry Slam House Competition, Years 3 to 8

“The best words in the best order,” said Samuel Taylor Coleridge of poetry.

Cranleigh Prep School couldn’t agree more. The first in-person Poetry Slam House Competition since the pandemic and a whole Prep School event. Standing up and reciting poetry to an audience helps build confidence and public speaking skills. Special mention must go to Emma H., who had several teachers in tears with her touching poem about her family, and Lily H., who decided to ‘drop the mic’ and used her powerful lungs to project her poem to the back of the auditorium.

What could be better than singing your heart out to an awesome song with your House buddies? High energy and excitement infused the Prep Hip House Holler event, where Etihad ‘kicked off their Sunday shoes’ for a rendition of Etihad’s Footloose, Al Sharaf ‘considered themselves one of the family’ with Oliver, Zaeemers sang out their ‘problem-free philosophy’ with Hakuna Matata and Sadeeq ‘worked 9-5’ for the win.

Bake-Off, Years 9 and 10

This was the first Year 9 Inter-House competition of the year and an opportunity for pupils to collaborate and take risks in a demanding environment. Students showed off their culinary skills, and their creations were above and beyond those of previous years. They produced an exceptional range of cakes and cupcakes decorated in their House colours. The finished results looked great and tasted delicious, even if there was an incident of icing exploding onto the floor! It was a close call, but South made it look easy and scooped the win for Years 9 and 10.

This was the first Senior School Sports Day post-COVID-19 and was a superb showcase of athletic talent, camaraderie, and skill. As an inclusive House event, with parents invited to support, all Seniors (and some game staff!) took to the field to compete and contribute to their House point tally. Senior sport is thrilling to watch! These athletes are fast, strong, accurate and agile. Seeing everyone striving to represent their House to the best of their ability was inspiring, showcasing determination and resilience.

The Tug-of-War was a real highlight, bringing out a friendly competitiveness between Houses. Well done to all Seniors for a fantastic Senior Sports Day comeback. Congratulations to West House, our overall winners, with North in second place, South in third place and East in fourth.

Senior Debating, Year 11

Debating in the structured sense opens the mind to wider perspectives, encourages objective evaluation and analysis, and finetunes communication skills. ‘Has Cancel Culture Gone Too Far?’ asked Year 11 South House. Their compelling argument around this contention won the Year 11 House Debate.

West House won in a tight, nerve-racking competition.

Cranleigh Factor, Years 9 to 13

Cranleigh Seniors brought the comedy, the moves, the perfect pitch, the improv and the talent to the Cranleigh Factor House event. Congratulations North House, on the win, and thank you to Amelia H., Anna G., and Yassmine H. for hosting this entertaining end-of-term event.

Cross-Country Running

Senior House Cross-Country Running was invigorating (and fast!). The perfect balance of competition and healthy outdoor fun. Congratulations to North House, who were victorious.

On the 17th March 2023, the School hosted an incredible outdoor evening. The Senior School Leadership Team produced the first-ever Cranleigh music festival extravaganza: Cranleigh Fest!

Talented pupil performers, light bites, picnics, friends, and families brought the whole Community together in a celebration of music and entertainment for all.

“Cranleigh Fest was the Senior Student Leadership Team’s response to calls for reuniting the School after we had been separated due to the pandemic. This music festival was one way to reconnect.

As a musician, it was incredible to see the range and diversity of performers from Year 7 up to Year 13 (and even older with the teacher’s band!), and while on stage, it brought me so much joy to see people genuinely having fun and enjoying the live music which has been sorely missed in the past few years. I hope Cranleigh Fest will continue for many years to come!”
