Subscribing to Addiction
Since millennials are completely addicted and consumed by their smartphones and social media, we have accepted these devices are never going away. They want to do what they want, go anywhere and everywhere all the time, and document their lives through screens, even though they are well aware of their enslavement to their own smartphones. These devices have become ingrained in our everyday lives. Swiping, scrolling, unlocking, pinching, zooming: we are obsessed with these gestures, especially when we are mindlessly browsing through our phones looking for something to do or a notification to appear. Smartphones are linked and synced to us, and we cannot imagine a life or future without them, and we certainly cannot handle it when the battery dies, or worse, if we completely lose our phone. Instead of denying this addiction to these devices, we are now embracing the addiction. Our dependence on mobile technology, regardless of it’s future physical appearance and design, is here to stay.

Drivers//Manifestations
Millennials want to go anywhere and everywhere all the time due to the increasing plague of FOMO (fear of missing out). Snapchat stories, Instagram posts, and almost any documentation of our lives’ events glamorize every experience we have in the eyes of our friends and viewers. This enslavement to our smartphones has us constantly checking and refreshing for new notifications and updates over 100 times a day. Not only do we feel addicted to our phones, but we also feel obligated to check them in case we miss anything that means anything to us. The only way we know how to combat FOMO is by joining in these experiences ourselves and taking part in posting, documenting, and glamorizing our most likely not-so-exciting lives. We are battling technology with even more technology. Additionally, smartphones keep expanding every year, both in size and capabilities. The “phablet” craze is well underway due to the fact it combines two products, phone and tablet, into one device. Therefore, this reiterates why we will only continue to embrace this enslavement to our phones. We are obsessed, they are ingrained in our lives and culture.

“Phablet” // Extremetech
Phablet (larger phone/smaller tablet) usage is on the rise, tripling over the last two years. They offer a wider range of capabilities during a time when we rely on our devices for more and more reasons everyday.
Twitter vs. fomo // PCMAG
Twitter battles FOMO with a new “Moments” feature, an example of more technology being used to fight something caused by technology. The feature is meant to catch users up on anything of significance they could have possibly missed while away.

AGE OF SNAPCHAT // Business Insider
A look inside millennial users’ views on Snapchat, what they use it for, and why. Many agree they like to keep on friend’s lives as well as document their own. They mainly do not want to miss out on what is happening.
Opportunity
To create a cohesive, premium, womenswear line that embraces the presence of technology, specifically smartphones and social media, in everyday life. This will be utilized through interesting, but useful, design details, such as pockets, as well as mixing of fabrics, textures, and prints. This collection will target Generation Y as they mature and grow with technology. It will always impact every aspect of their lives.

PROSPECT PROSPECT

Inspired by the expansion of technology, Prospect creates premium quality garments intended to embrace it. We provide fashion for confident individuals who share the same addiction to technology and style as Prospect. We look to the future for the prospective beauty it holds.

Justification
This line is part aesthetic and function. For aesthetics, it will represent and interpret the presence of smartphones and the future of them in everyday life into garments. As for function, some of the design details will be specifically tailored for technology as well as the growing sizes of devices. Overall, the line will embody the emotions and presence of technology in the near future.
