Subscribing to Addiction
Since millennials are completely addicted and consumed by their smartphones and social media, we have accepted these devices are never going away. They want to do what they want, go anywhere and everywhere all the time, and document their lives through screens, even though they are well aware of their enslavement to their own smartphones. These devices have become ingrained in our everyday lives. Swiping, scrolling, unlocking, pinching, zooming: we are obsessed with these gestures, especially when we are mindlessly browsing through our phones looking for something to do or a notification to appear. Smartphones are linked and synced to us, and we cannot imagine a life or future without them, and we certainly cannot handle it when the battery dies, or worse, if we completely lose our phone. Instead of denying this addiction to these devices, we are now embracing the addiction. Our dependence on mobile technology, regardless of it’s future physical appearance and design, is here to stay.
