Scanning the announcements of bauma this year, one thing was crystal clear: the electric revolution is no longer coming — it’s already here. From loaders to cranes, and even the mightiest dump trucks, electrification is charging through construction machinery at full speed.
But while the showcase was dazzling, a real-world challenge looms for Middle East workshops: how do you maintain and repair these new generations of electric equipment while keeping the day-to-day heartbeat of traditional machinery ticking?
Workshops across the region are already stretched — servicing fleets of dieselpowered machines that are, frankly, the backbone of ongoing projects. Now, they must gear up for a whole new skillset: high-voltage systems, battery diagnostics, software updates, and next-level electronics troubleshooting. It’s a technical leap, and one that can’t happen overnight.
The danger is obvious. Focus too much on electric machinery, and risk downtime on conventional kit that still makes up 90% of today’s active fleets. Ignore electrics, and workshops will soon find themselves out of step with both customer demand and future regulations.
The transition demands serious investment — not just in new tools and workshop layouts, but, crucially, in people. Training technicians to be bilingual in oldschool mechanical skills and EV technology is no small feat. It’s a cultural shift as much as a technical one.
Those who get it right will be the ones who see the big picture: that the workshop of the future is not an either/
or environment. It’s hybrid. It’s smart. And it’s ready for whatever rolls in through the doors — whether it hums quietly or roars like a lion.
bauma may have shown us the shiny future. But back home in the Middle East, the real story is just beginning.
On another note, it was good to see the show return after years of global uncertainty. And bauma 2025 roared back to life, reaffirming its status as the heartbeat of the construction industry. With approximately 600,000 visitors from over 200 countries and 3,601 exhibitors representing 57 nations, the event surpassed expectations and rekindled the sector’s collective enthusiasm.
The Munich exhibition centre buzzed again with energy as industry leaders, innovators, and professionals converged to explore the latest advancements in construction machinery, sustainability, and digitaliation. The palpable excitement underscored the importance of face-toface interactions in driving progress and fostering global trade. It was great to see that bauma still has a place for cutting-edge technology but also reignite an industry’s optimism and collaborative spirit.

In the heart of Kansas, amid vast expanses of farmland and ranches stretching as far as the eye can see, operates Four Bar S, a family-owned business established in 1986 thanks to the vision and determination of the Schmidt family. Today, Chad Schmidt, the founders’ son, holds the reins of the business, proudly carrying on the work started by his parents.
Four Bar S began as a small business dedicated to manure removal and customized work for local ranchers. Over time, the company has expanded its reach, now serving a vast area covering hundreds of thousands of hectares, from north-central Oklahoma to the Nebraska border. The secret to this growth? Quality service, dedication, and the use of reliable equipment.
Every day, Chad and his team tackle complex challenges every day with peak working hours of 12 to 15 hours a day during the busiest times, operating on a wide variety of terrains depending on where
they are located. They must ensure efficient operations, work with precision and maximize productivity, all while keeping both land and animals in top condition. And that is right where BKT tires come into play - key allies in the success of the company’s success.
When operating with heavy equipment in harsh environments, the choice of tires is crucial. Four Bar S relies particularly on AGRIMAX FORCE and RIDEMAX FL 693 M, which have proven to provide optimum performance in terms of strength, durability, and ride comfort.
Four Bar S’ equipment needs tires that can handle heavy weights and fast speeds. AGRIMAX FORCE provides good traction and flotation on any type of soil, reducing soil compaction and improving operating efficiency. A key feature of this range is IF technology that ensures a limited impact of the machinery on the soil, which results in a healthy soil. Even under low-pressure conditions, these
tires demonstrate their robustness and endurance over time, both on farmland and on the road.
RIDEMAX FL 693 M, on the other hand, is a tire that distinguished itself through its heat resistance and ability to withstand heavy loads without the risk of premature wear.
“In the past we had many problems with other tires, especially bead and sidewall damage, mainly because of the heavy weights we carry and the speeds at which we operate. Since using BKT’s RIDEMAX FL 693 we had any more issues. This makes a huge difference to our operations,”
Chad Schmidt says. “The BKT tires have allowed us to have a high load on the rear tires and have held up well, delivering great performance on complex terrain such as ours.”
For a company like Four Bar S, pausing is no option. BKT tires have enabled Chad and his team to reduce downtime, avoid replacements and improve job safety. “Knowing that you can count on strong, reliable tires means you
can work with more peace of mind and less interruptions”-comments John Curtain, the company’s tractor driver. “The less tires that need to be replaced, the more efficient the job gets done, plus greater time savings.”
But that’s not all the benefits: BKT’s advanced product technology also results in greater driving comfort, a key consideration for operators spending long hours on tractors and spreaders. “Our operators are satisfied: driving is smoother and less tiring. This means, they are more efficient and, at the end of the day, also happier.”
Yet, customer contentment is certainly not a secondary consideration: “The BKT tires help us to have less soil compaction. We have several customers, who are very attentive to this aspect, so it is a really important thing for their satisfaction at the end of the day,” Chad says. “We know we can count on BKT for our operations. This is a security that really makes a difference.”

“It’s more important than ever to work very close to our customers... to secure that we can provide the right solutions and the right technology for their needs”
The unveiling of the first-ever battery-electric articulated hauler in its size class — the Volvo A30 Electric — was the highlight of Volvo’s electrifying press conference at bauma 2025.
Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) President Melker Jernberg, alongside Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks, and Anna Müller, President of Volvo Penta, presented the company’s most ambitious step yet in sustainable equipment innovation.
“We will soon see something. Let’s see how many of you could guess what it is,” Jernberg teased just moments before unveiling the hauler. “It’s a world first. It’s something that not even we thought we were able to do just a couple of years back.” With the A30 Electric, soon to be joined by a 40-tonne variant, Volvo now boasts a fully electric lineup, with conventional combustion engine versions available for all models — “so you can choose,” as Jernberg put it.
While battery-electric technology stood centre stage, the message from the Volvo Group was clear: there is no silver bullet for decarbonising construction and transport. Instead, the company
is advancing a broad portfolio that includes hybrid powertrains, biodiesel compatibility, hydrogen internal combustion engines, and even fuel cell electric vehicles.
“We don’t believe in one only solution. It will be a range of different solutions,” said Jernberg. These include battery electric, hybrid, internal combustion engines running on biodiesel and HVO, and future fuel cell electric options.
“We’re quite sure also that the internal combustion engine will continue to play an extremely big role in our industry,” Jernberg noted. “And that’s the reason why we continue to invest heavily in that technology.”
Anna Müller added: “We are now investing substantially in different technologies, but we also see that it’s more important than ever to work very close to our customers... to secure that we can provide the right solutions and the right technology for their needs.”
Electrification Across the Volvo Group Roger Alm emphasised how Volvo Trucks is leading with a wide electric offering: “Battery electric will be the main path for Volvo Trucks to reach net zero. Today, Volvo is market leader in Europe with 50% [market share].” He added that electrical Volvo trucks have already accumulated mileage equivalent to “4,000 laps around the world.”
Meanwhile, Volvo Penta’s modular battery energy storage systems are addressing the rising demand for reliable charging infrastructure. “Battery energy storage is becoming a vital part of the construction ecosystem,” said Müller, highlighting a new rental-based model developed in partnership with Bowles and ePower.

product is developed with environmental responsibility in mind. Materials are sourced more sustainably, circular economy principles are being implemented across operations, and the company continues to explore how digital tools can further minimise waste and inefficiency.
From Volvo Penta’s scalable battery energy storage systems to Volvo Trucks’ marketleading fleet of electric trucks — already clocking the equivalent of 4,000 laps around the world — the company demonstrated how its electrification strategy extends across every segment.
“With eight electric truck models in production, we have solutions for every
customer need, every market, and every application,” said Alm. “And thanks to our modular approach, our products — electric or diesel — offer the same outstanding safety, comfort, and fuel efficiency.”
Müller added that Penta’s new modular battery systems are already being deployed via a rental-based model, enhancing grid resilience on construction sites.
At the event, Volvo also showcased the latest in site-wide optimisation solutions, including its digital Site Operation platform and on-site consultancy service, Site Optimization. These services are designed to reduce operating costs by up to 30%, increase fuel efficiency by 15%, and improve safety and uptime.
Volvo’s vision of the future construction site is one that is smarter, cleaner, and fully connected. Digital twin technology, proactive machine monitoring, and predictive maintenance powered by AI are already helping customers reduce downtime and maximise productivity.
“A machine or a truck in itself is good, but it’s not enough,” said Jernberg. Among the highlighted tools was Volvo Site Operation — a digital twin platform that allows full visibility across machines, trucks, and site assets. According to Jernberg, this solution alone can deliver “up to 15%” improvements in productivity and fuel efficiency.
The second tool, Site Optimization, is an on-site consultancy service, explained Jernberg. “It just shows that when you have a site in the old way, without planning,
“We don’t believe in one only solution. It will be a range of different solutions”
you’re working hard. But if you plan and really dig into it... you get a cost reduction per tonne up to 30%.”
Volvo also emphasised that innovation is not just about emissions or data — it’s about people. The A30 Electric and other next-gen machines come equipped with improved cabins designed for better visibility, lower noise, and reduced vibration, creating a safer and more comfortable environment for operators.
De-Risking new tech for customers
Volvo also acknowledged the uncertainties customers face when investing in new technologies. Jernberg highlighted Volvo Financial Services and Equipment-as-aService models that help reduce up-front risk.
“There’s a lot of different setups, but we’re also now globally approaching and learning quite successful with many customers, what we call equipment as a service, which is then, you know, pay per use, pay per use model. Not perfect for everyone, but for very many,” added Jernberg “And it’s a really win, win, win situation because it’s a guaranteed, guaranteed uptime with lower risk, but with a good product.”
Acknowledging the challenges customers face in adopting new technologies, Volvo is expanding financial services, short- and long-term rental options, and pay-per-use models under its Equipment as a Service offering. These measures aim to reduce risk and make it easier for customers to transition at their own pace.
Volvo Financial Services is playing a key role in this journey, providing the support customers need to make bold but necessary investments. As sustainability becomes a competitive advantage, Volvo is helping its partners future-proof their operations.
Alm added: “It is about the total offer — the product, the services, and financing... this package will give our customers peace of mind.”
As the press conference concluded, each of the leaders reflected on Volvo’s direction. “Hopefully you see that we are not only talking — we are walking also,” said Jernberg.
“We will continue to invest,” added Müller, “with the vision to make our offer in the market 100% safe, 100% sustainable, and 100% more productive.”
“This is the power of the Volvo Group,” concluded Alm. “We have the solutions, we have the offerings, we have the construction machines, we have the trucks... and we will continue to invest to build a sustainable future.”

in countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland, and the UK. Its recently opened new factories signal its long-term commitment to local manufacturing and compliance with EU standards.
To emphasise the importance of aftermarket service to its customers, Zoomlion has launched comprehensive digital and operational support systems across Europe. Training centres, digitized spare parts management, and AI-driven predictive maintenance solutions aim to minimize downtime, enhance safety, and maximise productivity for European customers.
Wang robustly defended Zoomlion against critiques of unfair competition, emphasising the Chinese company’s success stems solely from innovation, not governmental support. “Our advantage comes from our product development, not subsidies.” he insisted. “China’s domestic market is the most competitive in the world. We’ve succeeded by innovating under tough conditions.”
Zoomlion envisions robotics and 5G-controlled machinery as central to construction technology. Demonstrations at Bauma included robotic arms designed for precise glass installation, 5G-enabled remote operations, and advanced wearable safety technology—all tailored to stringent European safety standards. These are already capturing the attention of the European market, and it believes it is setting benchmarks for intelligent, efficient, and environmentally conscious construction practices that match and often succeed its competitors based in other markets.
Zoomlion is clearly determined, like its sky-reaching cranes, to maintain its position at the top table of manufacturers, as demonstrated by its leadership in global standardisation via its role as the secretariat of the ISO TC-1986 committee for cranes. As Wang explained, Zoomlion’s AI, control systems, and structural innovations are now integrated into every product — from super-large cranes to electric lifts — ensuring high performance, safety, and international standards compliance.
“Bauma has built a solid bridge for global industry exchange and cooperation,” said Yuan Ye, Assistant President of Zoomlion, before adding that the Chinese company sees it as a crucial chance for greater and timely collaboration. “Zoomlion sees this exhibition as an opportunity to explore innovative and cooperative development pathways where we use more high-end, intelligent, and green products to build our beautiful world together.”
Since its founding five years ago, DAR of Equipment (DOE) has emerged as one of the UAE’s most trusted providers of used heavy machinery and trucks.
At the heart of its success is a strong commitment to transparency, quality, and customer satisfaction, values championed by Deputy Director Tarik Cundi. CMME sat down with Cundi to explore his career journey, DAR of Equipment’s growth, and his insights on the future of the used equipment industry.
““My name is Tarik Cundi, and I am the Deputy Director at DAR of Equipment Co. (DOE),” he begins. “I hold a BSc degree in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from the UK. My career in the construction equipment industry began in 1993 in the UAE. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working with several reputable local and international companies, including construction equipment manufacturers.”
Cundi’s career trajectory is a demonstration of his own hard work and perseverance. Starting as an assistant mechanic, he steadily progressed through the ranks, becoming a workshop manager, then moving into sales roles — first as a sales engineer, and later as a regional manager and branch manager — before ultimately taking on his current role. “My extensive experience in the construction equipment and commercial truck sectors has provided me with a deep understanding of the industry and its dynamics,” he adds.
DAR of Equipment’s journey has been one of rapid growth and strategic expansion. “Since its establishment in 2020, DOE has been a driving force in the used heavy machinery and trucks sector, continually evolving to meet the needs of both
individual and corporate customers across the UAE, GCC, and the broader MENA region,” says Cundi.
The company’s focus on operational excellence, customer-centric solutions, and strategic partnerships has earned it a strong reputation in a competitive marketplace. Today, DOE is recognised as a dependable provider known for its reliability, innovation, and industry expertise.
The demand for used equipment has evolved significantly, particularly in the GCC. “Used equipment offers a more economical option compared to new machinery, especially during times of economic uncertainty,” explains Cundi.
“Its immediate availability helps keep major infrastructure and construction projects on schedule, a crucial advantage in a region witnessing rapid development.”
He adds that selecting pre-owned equipment aligns with global sustainability efforts, reducing waste and extending machinery lifecycles. “Modern used equipment often incorporates technologies like automation and telematics, enhancing reliability and efficiency,” Cundi notes. Ambitious initiatives such as Saudi Vision 2030 and the UAE’s Industrial Strategy 2031 are also driving demand for costeffective and sustainable industrial solutions.
Maintaining Quality and Customer Trust Cundi stresses that quality assurance is paramount. “We conduct thorough inspections, provide certifications, and maintain transparency with highquality listings, including images, specifications, and maintenance histories,” he says. DOE also embraces refurbishment, seeks customer feedback, offers warranties, and provides robust after-sales support.
“We embrace positive criticism, and we continuously improve based on customer feedback,” he explains. “We continuously
improve and seek positive customer reviews and testimonials that highlight our reputation and the quality of our offerings. Additionally, offering warranties and robust after-sales support, including technical consultation and assistance, provides buyers with peace of mind. Clear return policies, in case the machine does not match the listed specifications or description, demonstrate our commitment to customer satisfaction. Providing training and educational resources helps buyers operate and maintain their equipment effectively. Through these strategies, we maintain high standards of quality assurance and foster strong customer confidence in our used equipment.”
Trade disruptions have bolstered the appeal of used machinery. “Amid ongoing global supply chain disruptions, companies are increasingly turning to used equipment as a more readily available and costeffective alternative to new machinery,” says Cundi. Used equipment offers not only faster delivery but also cost-effective flexibility — a key advantage during volatile times, he adds.
“This approach helps mitigate delays and shortages caused by supply chain issues. Used equipment often presents a more economical option, particularly during times of economic uncertainty, allowing businesses to manage costs effectively without significant capital expenditure. Additionally, the heightened need for operational flexibility during trade disruptions makes used equipment an attractive choice. It can be quickly sourced and deployed, enabling companies to adapt to changing market conditions and maintain productivity. These factors contribute to the growing demand and supply in the used equipment market, making it a viable solution for businesses navigating global trade challenges.”
DOE actively contributes to the circular economy through the sale and reuse of heavy machinery.
“Used equipment often presents a more economical option, particularly during times of economic uncertainty, allowing businesses to manage costs effectively without significant capital expenditure”
“DOE significantly contributes to the circular economy through various practices related to the sale and reuse of heavy machinery. By offering cost-effective used equipment, we enable buyers, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), to allocate resources more efficiently,” says Cundi. “Our commitment to promoting sustainable practices encourages a broader cultural shift towards sustainability within the industry. We invest in advanced refurbishment techniques and technologies to enhance the quality and performance of used machinery, supporting innovation in sustainable practices. Establishing a robust secondary market for heavy machinery facilitates the efficient circulation of resources within the economy. Additionally, by sourcing and selling used equipment locally, we ensure that investments remain within the country, fostering economic growth.”
By maintaining a strong secondary market, DOE ensures efficient resource circulation.
“Exporting equipment that no longer meets local legislative requirements helps reduce the surplus of non-compliant machinery while boosting national exports and generating additional national income. These practices highlight the important role that DOE and other used equipment companies play in promoting a circular economy, fostering sustainability, and driving economic efficiency,” he adds.
Talk of sustainability moves Cundi talk how changing government policy is increasingly influencing buyer behaviour.
“Sustainability is increasingly becoming a significant factor in sourcing machinery, with buyers showing a greater preference for eco-friendly and fuel-efficient equipment. In the GCC market, governments are raising pollution standards to align with the highest global benchmarks, such as those in Europe and the USA.”
Cundi observes that this is creating demand for electric and hybrid machinery, particularly in construction and manufacturing sectors.
“This regulatory shift is driving a significant move towards machinery powered by renewable energy sources, including electric and hybrid equipment, which not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but is also gaining popularity in sectors like construction and manufacturing,” says Cundi, before adding that the shift, however is not uniform across all regions.
“Unfortunately, this trend is not as prevalent in other countries, so at DOE, we strive to serve a diverse range of markets. Additionally, buyers are prioritising fuelefficient machinery to lower operational costs and minimise environmental impact, with advanced technologies and smart systems being integrated into equipment to optimise energy use and enhance efficiency.”
Like others in the sector, DOE faces major challenges, and Cundi tells CMME that while, the global supply chain has been severely impacted by events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions, and natural disasters, this has led to delays,
shortages, and increased costs, including shipping costs.
“These disruptions make it difficult for companies to maintain inventory and meet customer demands at reasonable prices. Additionally, the market for used equipment is highly dynamic, with fluctuating demand influenced by economic conditions, construction activity, and technological advancements, requiring companies to continuously adapt to stay competitive. Regulatory compliance is another challenge, as GCC governments elevate pollution and safety standards to align with global benchmarks, necessitating additional investments in upgrading or retrofitting machinery,” says Cundi.
The rapid pace of technological innovation also means that newer, more efficient equipment is constantly entering the market, forcing used equipment companies to balance the need to offer modern, reliable machinery while managing the depreciation of older inventory.
Changing regulatory standards, technological advancements, and fluctuating demand require constant adaptation.
“Building and maintaining trust with customers is crucial, requiring companies to provide transparent information about the condition, history, and performance of used equipment to reassure buyers and foster long-term relationships,” he explains. “Addressing these challenges requires strategic planning, investment in technology, and a focus on building resilient supply chains and customer trust.”
To overcome supply challenges, DOE diversifies supplier networks, utilises predictive technologies, and invests in local sourcing. “We leverage AI and online platforms to optimise procurement and inventory management,” Cundi says.
Digitalisation has transformed the business model. “Our online platform provides detailed listings and maintenance histories, enabling buyers to make informed decisions remotely,” he highlights. Future developments could include virtual inspections and predictive maintenance supported by AI and VR. However technology progresses DOE is certain it needs to prioritise its focus on connecting suppliers with its own customer-base.
“Competitive pricing, combined with a deep understanding of market dynamics, allows us to offer value to our customers. Strong relationships with suppliers ensure a steady supply of high-quality equipment, enabling
us to manage our inventory effectively and meet customer demands promptly. Our strong reputation and brand presence, bolstered by positive reviews, testimonials, and a history of satisfied customers, further differentiate us in the market.”
Although there are no immediate plans for territorial expansion, diversification is under active review. “We are exploring new markets and opportunities to broaden our product range and services,” says Cundi.
He expects demand for construction equipment, renewable energy machinery, agricultural machinery, mining equipment, and logistics trucks to grow over the next five years, especially in the GCC and Africa.
“With ongoing infrastructure development and urbanisation projects, there will be a high demand for construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, bulldozers, and cranes. Both regions are investing heavily in building roads, bridges, residential complexes, and commercial buildings,” he says, adding that: “As these countries push towards
sustainable energy solutions, there will be an increased demand for renewable energy equipment related to solar and wind energy projects, including solar panel installation equipment, wind turbine components, and maintenance machinery. In Africa, the agricultural sector is crucial for economic growth, driving the need for tractors, harvesters, irrigation systems, and other agricultural machinery to boost productivity and support food security initiatives.
“The mining industry in both regions is expected to expand, increasing the demand for mining machinery such as drilling machines, crushers, and earthmovers. In the GCC, the oil and gas industry remains a cornerstone of the economy, with continued demand for drilling rigs, pipeline construction machinery, and maintenance equipment to support exploration and production activities. Additionally, the demand for trucks is expected to rise to support regional expansion and streamline the transportation of goods within the region and to ports for export and import activities. These categories reflect the strategic priorities and economic
activities in the GCC and African countries, indicating where machinery demand is likely to grow most strongly.”
In a fast-changing industry, DOE’s emphasis on quality, innovation, and customer trust positions it for continued leadership in a thriving used machinery market. Cundi is proud of what sets DOE apart.
“Our unwavering commitment to quality, transparency, and customer service distinguishes us from other providers,” he affirms. “We invest in technology, maintain strong supplier relationships, and offer competitive pricing, all while fostering trust with our customers.”
Ultimately, Cundi credits DOE’s success to its people. “The secret to our sustained success lies in our dedicated team, whose consistency, persistence, and drive to succeed are unmatched. Additionally, the unwavering support from our higher management and their inspiring success stories propel the company forward, ensuring we remain at the forefront of the used equipment industry,” he concludes.
“Our unwavering commitment to quality, transparency, and customer service distinguishes us from other providers”
