Holiday Season arrives in Coweta County

The Holiday Sip and See in Newnan and the Senoia: Alive After Five Mistletoe Market include food trucks, night markets, live music and more. Both events are from 5 to 9 p.m.

EVENTSSeason

Last week’s frigid, albeit brief, temperatures were a reminder that the holidays are just around the corner. In fact, the 2025 Holiday Season in Coweta County begins on Friday, November 21 as both downtown Newnan and Senoia have events to get everything kickstarted.

Of course the Holiday Season’s main character for the kiddos is Santa Claus. Santa has appearances sprinkled throughout late November and December including some major ones here in Coweta. One of the first events Santa will attend is Ashley Park’s Lights Up Holiday Festival on Saturday, November 22. He arrives at 5 p.m. and the tree lighting and LED light show follows at 6 p.m. He returns on Friday, November 28 as Main Street Newnan hosts Santa on the Square from 6-8 p.m. on North Court Square. He’ll light the Christmas tree and then invite kids to sit on his lap and read their Christmas list to him.

Santa has another stop scheduled for Senoia and the Light Up Senoia Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting on Saturday, December 6. The parade begins at 6:30 p.m. and will include visits with Santa following the parade.

The Newnan-Coweta History Center hosts Cookies with Santa the next afternoon from 1-3:30 p.m. There will be tours of the McRitchie-Hollis Museum and cookies and photos with Santa. Santa’s final major appearances in Coweta prior to Christmas will take place on Saturday, December 13. He’ll be at the 5th Annual Christmas at Madras Park for pictures with families along with a doughnut breakfast at 10 a.m., then remain for the 4th Annual Paws and Claus at Madras where folks can bring their furry friends and pose with Santa for a photo at 11:45 a.m. And later that evening, Santa will be at the City of Newnan’s Annual Christmas Parade. This year’s parade theme is “A Nutcracker Christmas” and starts at 6 p.m. Santa will take part in the parade riding in a firetruck.

Newnan Theatre Company offers a pair of holiday performances beginning with “A Very N.I.T.W.I.T.S. Holiday Special” on Friday and Saturday, November 21 and 22. Both one-of-a-kind improvisation shows are at 8 p.m. NTC follows that with three weekends of “A Very Pandering Christmas Carol” on December 4-7, 11-14 and 18-21. This musical comedy takes Charles Dickens’ beloved classic and gives it a delightfully ridiculous twist with surprise guest from Christmas movies.

Southern Arc Dance’s annual performances of Nutcracker 25 at the Wadsworth Auditorium are scheduled for November 29 at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. and November 30 at 3 p.m.

A few photos of the American Legion’s Veterans Day celebration on November 11th at Veterans Memorial Park.

Photos from City of Newnan’s Facebook post.

The annual Veterans Day Ceremony honoring all who served was held at Veterans Memorial Park. It was a day to express admiration and appreciation for the brave men and women in uniform whose service and sacrifice have protected our freedom and way of life through the generations. Following the ceremony, a luncheon was held at the Coweta Veterans Club.

Bridging the Gap Operation: Gobble Gobble Thanksgiving Distribution Sponsorships

The Heart of Thanksgiving at Bridging the Gap

Thanksgiving is a season of gratitude, togetherness, and family. But for many of our neighbors, the holiday can bring more stress than joy as they struggle to put a meal on the table. At Bridging the Gap, we believe every family deserves to experience the warmth of a holiday meal shared with loved ones.

In 2024, a Thanksgiving box cost just $62, enough to provide a full holiday meal for a family. But as prices continue to rise, that same box now costs nearly $77 in 2025. Inflation may have increased the cost, but it hasn’t changed our mission—to make sure no family in our community goes without a Thanksgiving dinner.

Each Thanksgiving box includes a turkey or ham, seasonal sides, vegetables, dessert, and pantry staples. It’s more than just food—it’s hope, dignity, and the reminder that our community cares.

This year, we invite you to partner with us through Operation: Gobble Gobble to make Thanksgiving possible for hundreds of families across Coweta County and beyond. Whether through financial sponsorship or in-kind donations, your support helps us place these meals directly into the hands of families who need them most. Together, we can feed, serve, and restore hope this holiday season.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Every gift helps us put Thanksgiving on the table for families in need. Join us in Operation: Gobble Gobble and choose the sponsorship level that best fits your ability to give:

$1,000 Harvest Helper → Feeds 13 families

$2,500 Table Setter → Feeds 32 families

$5,000 Gratitude Giver → Feeds 65 families

$7,500 Community Feast Builder → Feeds 97 families

$10,000 Cornucopia Champion → Feeds 129 families

$15,000 Blessings Bearer → Feeds 194 families

$20,000 Thanksgiving Hero → Feeds 258 families

Why Partner with Bridging the Gap?

Local Impact: Every dollar and donation stays in Coweta and surrounding counties.

Efficiency: Over 95¢ of every dollar goes directly into our mission. Community Recognition: Sponsors will be highlighted on our website, social media, and Thanksgiving distribution event materials. Together, we can ensure families experience the joy, dignity, and togetherness of a true Thanksgiving meal. Let’s Bridge the Gap this Thanksgiving.

In-Kind Sponsorships

Not every gift has to be financial. We also rely on food donations to help fill our Thanksgiving boxes. We are seeking:

 Stuffing

 Cranberry Sauce

 Pumpkin Pie Filling

 Corn

 Sweet Potatoes

 Green Beans

 Jiffy Mix

 Mashed Potato Packets

 Gravy Packets

 Cream of Mushroom Soup

Every $77 feds 1 family.

Food Pantries, Meals on Wheels Offer Food Assistance to Coweta Residents

As many households face financial challenges, people of all ages, from children to seniors, are facing food insecurity, or not having access to sufficient or quality food. Some people are being forced to make tough choices as grocery prices remain high and food assistance benefits are in jeopardy.

Food is a necessity, and local nonprofits and ministries are committed to helping families put nutritious meals on the table through food assistance programs, such as food pantries and Meals on Wheels. If your household is facing food insecurity, consider these local resources:

Bridging The Gap Community Outreach

Bridging The Gap Community Outreach, a nonprofit that provides food and resources to families in need, is focused on ending hunger in Coweta County. Each week, Bridging The Gap provides nutritious food to hundreds of families across the county.

Every Saturday, families can receive a variety of groceries, including fresh produce, meats, pantry staples and other essentials, at a weekly food distribution. It’s recommended for those in need to arrive no later than 8 a.m. Food is distributed on a first come, first served basis. Recipients will drive up, stay in their vehicle and check in with a volunteer, who will gather basic information, such as their name and household size. Then, volunteers will load boxes and bags of food into the vehicle.

Bridging the Gap also serves hot meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m.

The nonprofit also has a Home Delivery program for individuals who can’t attend food distributions in person due to age, disability, illness, lack of transportation or other hardships, according to the organization’s website.

Bridging The Gap Community Outreach is at 19 First Ave. in Newnan. For more information, call 770-683-9110 or email info@btgcommunity. org. The nonprofit is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. On Wednesdays and Fridays, services are available by appointment only.

The Salvation Army of Newnan

The Salvation Army of Newnan offers a food pantry on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to noon for Coweta residents. To receive assistance, residents must present a photo ID and complete

required paperwork.

The Salvation Army of Newnan is at 670 Jefferson St. in Newnan. To access the food pantry, visitors should go to the social services door. For more information, visit https://southernusa.salvationarmy. org/newnan/hunger-relief or call 770-251-8181.

One Roof Ecumenical Alliance Outreach

One Roof Ecumenical Alliance Outreach offers food, clothing and financial assistance to families in crisis. The nonprofit’s food pantry is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m.

Clients can receive a voucher for a supplemental food box twice a month, but never consecutive weeks. The boxes are prepacked based on the size of the client’s household. To receive food for all household members, clients must list their dependents on the application. Verification, which includes photo ID, Social Security card or birth certificate, is required for all dependents and the client, according to One Roof’s website.

When items are in stock, diapers (infant and adult), baby formula, personal hygiene bundles, and pet food are available upon request.

Individuals in need of clothing or shoes can ask for a voucher to the thrift store on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. (Must arrive by 3:15 p.m.) Vouchers can be made for present and verified household members once every six months. The clothing selection varies with donations and will shift with the seasons. The thrift store is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Clients can also seek financial assistance with utility bills (water, electrical, etc.) or rent. Only Coweta County residents are eligible. Financial assistance is a one-time service that will be granted once per household. Clients must complete an inperson application and provide the required support documents (including proof of income from at least

the last 30 days). The application will be reviewed before financial support is granted, according to One Roof’s website. Those in need can apply for financial assistance on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m.

In addition, One Roof offers counseling (pastoral and licensed) either virtually or in-person. To receive a free counseling session, call One Roof to set up an appointment.

One Roof Ecumenical Alliance Outreach is at 255 Temple Ave. in Newnan. For more information, visit https://www.oneroofoutreach.org, call 770-6837705 or email assist@oneroofoutreach.org.

Notes from Perry Street

What this country needs is a good old fashioned Papal Conclave.

Like when the Catholic Cardinals all get together to elect a new Pope. They swear secrecy, give up their cell phones and are locked up in an area of the Sistine Chapel. And they stay there until they elect a pope.

You can read up on what all goes on in there; heck there is even a movie about electing a Pope called Conclave. Basically, the cardinals vote by secret ballot until a majority is reached. And a simple majority doesn’t cut it. Two-thirds of the Cardinals have to agree on the new Pope.

Beside no cell phones, there is no Netflix, Hulu and the food is edible, sort of.

What this country needs is a good old fashioned Papal Conclave. But instead of Cardinals, let’s get all the U.S. Senators and Congressmen together. No phones, no television, no staff, crappy food and a cot to sleep on.

And they have to stay there until they get America back to work and open the government. As of this writing, it has been more than 30 days.

Let’s point fingers at the guilty. Damn Republicans, why won’t they come to the table? Wait, it’s the damn Democrats who won’t come to the table. Someone needs to be the parent and tell all of them to go to their rooms until they can behave.

I would bet a nice sum that if all the elected officials were allowed to vote by secret ballot, things would be very different. No one looking over another’s shoulder, no group of officials herding behind the majority or minority leader in lock step while on camera.

No, just everyone voting their conscience … if they still have one and haven’t been brainwashed by their respective mindcontrol party.

It is sad. This is sad. This is their job and they are all failing at it. Another reason for term limits. Oops, did I say that?

And so government employees aren’t being paid. Food programs are shutting down. Think about that … more than 40 million people who rely on help from the government to EAT are going to starve. Talk about food insecurities.

So let’s do our part. Food pantries and kitchens and other non-profit groups need our help more than ever. People who have worked all their lives suddenly aren’t sure where the next dinner is coming from.

Got extra food? Please drop it off. This is Thanksgiving, a time of being thankful for all that we have. And Pilgrim and Indian school plays of course.

Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Winters Media.

Until next time.

Coweta’s Most Wanted Come Through For Local Charity

Coweta’s Most Wanted returned full speed ahead with “criminals” raising nearly $10,000 in bail money as of mid-November.

This fundraiser by the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office is for “Camp 145,” named in honor of Investigator Eric Minix (badge number 145), who was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 4, 2024.

Coweta County Sheriff Lenn Wood personally arrested John Winters, publisher of The Paper and The Coweta Shopper, at his downtown Newnan office on Perry Street. Winters was among four others on the Most Wanted List. These people aren’t criminals, but rather local business leaders and individuals who have agreed to be part of a unique fundraiser to benefit the Coweta Community Foundation’s Coweta Co. Sheriff’s Office Fund (CCSOF). The others include Dan Judy, Doug Patterson, Jason Kanner and Stan Brown.

Bail money to bust out the Most Wanted fugitives will be used to fund Camp 145, a twopart adventure, that will be a thrilling and educational experience for local children.

The first week of camp in June of 2026 will be dedicated to 8- and 9-year-olds, followed by a week for 10-year-olds. Each camp will be packed with engaging activities and events, ensuring a summer they will remember. The kids will learn about various aspects of law enforcement and visit Coweta County Fire Station 1 to meet firefighters and see the trucks and tools they use to save lives. They will also tour Coweta County E-911 and learn when and why to call 911 in an emergency.

Once at the jail, the five were “arraigned” and had their mugshots taken. Each person must raise $2,500 in “bail,” with all proceeds directly benefiting the Coweta Community Foundation’s Coweta Co. Sheriff’s Office Fund, which helps fund Camp 145.

Join us in supporting a worthy cause and positively impacting our community by clicking on the QR code. Donations are still being accepted.

Your contribution can help ensure that every child has the opportunity to create lasting memories at Camp 145 while fostering relationships with local law enforcement. Together, let’s make a difference.

Visit www.cowetafoundation.org for more information on how you can get involved.

COGNIA awards Coweta Schools with High Marks, Re-Accreditation

From Coweta County Schools Press Release

Following nearly a year of preparation, the Cognia accreditation organization has awarded Coweta Schools six-year re-accreditation with “Merit” for the Coweta County School System, and awarded the school system one of its highest possible rankings of school and school system effectiveness following the accreditation process.

Overall, Coweta Schools received an “Index of Education Quality” score of 341 (out of a possible 400), which well exceeds Cognia’s average score of approximately 297 awarded to school systems in its network in recent years.

The findings of the agency provide all Coweta Schools with accreditation through Cognia from 2025 through 2031.

Accreditation for educational institutions serves as an assurance of academic and organizational excellence, and ensures a standard of quality among credits, courses and grade level placements between schools and universities around the world. Crucially, it also validates the equivalency of its students’ diplomas and certificates to other accredited schools and universities.

Coweta’s high ranking indicates the school system is meeting and exceeding all standards, reaching high levels in its overall operations, is engaged in practices that are sustained over time and that are becoming ingrained in a culture of system excellence, according to Cognia.

Cognia – formerly known as AdvancED –provided Coweta Schools with an accreditation review last in 2021. The accreditation agency issued its final report to the system in October. Coweta’s Assessment and Accountability Director, Dr. Jillian Andrew, Superintendent Evan Horton, and the school system’s curriculum department led the local process of the review and presented evidence to Cognia.

“Accreditation is a big deal for every school system and every educational institution,” said Superintendent Horton. “It is a validation of our graduate’s diplomas and, more than that, a validation by independent reviewers of the excellence of our schools and system. I am tremendously proud of our district, our administration, teachers and employees, and proud of our supportive community which makes possible what we do.”

“I couldn’t be more pleased, at this outcome,” said Assessment and Accountability Director Jillian Andrew. “Cognia and our review team were very complementary of our district, and one of our reviewers told us that Coweta’s review was one of the highest-scored reports that he

has written under their new review system.”

“They recognized our strengths as a system, recognized that we are strategic in carrying out our mission, vision and beliefs, and agreed with our own focus on what we want to improve in the coming years,” said Andrew. “Most of all, I am very pleased with what this says about our teachers and schools – that we are doing great and amazing things, and that this is the kind of school system you want to send your kids to.”

Cognia’s review was based on hundreds of pieces of reviewed evidence covering all 32 of Coweta’s schools and programs and the system’s district departments overall, reflecting five years of school and system performance, student achievement data, current educational practices, and hundreds of system and community interviews.

Each of Cognia’s 31 standards used to evaluate those areas is ranked on a four-point scale. A three is the goal for each standard, and receiving a four shows exceptional system effectiveness in each category. Coweta was awarded a level 3 or 4 on all COGNIA standards.

The report makes several observations outlining the data gathered by the team and their conclusions. Some of those said the system shows strong evidence that:

• Collaboration, respect, and shared purpose drive student success and community engagement district-wide.

• Strategic leadership and data-driven planning drive continuous improvement in student and staff outcome

• School System leaders prioritize instructional excellence through observation, professional learning, and student engagement.

• Leaders use data-driven processes to guide improvement, instruction, and student readiness efforts.

• Leaders and staff build strong connections among students, families, and educators by consistently applying practices that reflect the school system’s mission and values. Through shared decision-making, community engagement, and diverse opportunities, stakeholders are empowered to participate meaningfully and support a culture of respect and fairness.

• Leaders and staff use structured data processes such as school improvement workshops, impact checks, and professional learning focused on data interpretation to improve outcomes for all students. The board and district leadership collaborate to align decisions and policies with the strategic plan, which is reflected in leadership meeting agendas, board presentations, school visits, and efforts to support workforce development.

“I am very proud of Dr. Andrew and our curriculum team, and of the principals and teachers who participated in the accreditation process,” said Superintendent Horton.
