Bridging the Gap Operation: Gobble Gobble Thanksgiving Distribution Sponsorships

The Heart of Thanksgiving at Bridging the Gap

Thanksgiving is a season of gratitude, togetherness, and family. But for many of our neighbors, the holiday can bring more stress than joy as they struggle to put a meal on the table. At Bridging the Gap, we believe every family deserves to experience the warmth of a holiday meal shared with loved ones.

In 2024, a Thanksgiving box cost just $62, enough to provide a full holiday meal for a family. But as prices continue to rise, that same box now costs nearly $77 in 2025. Inflation may have increased the cost, but it hasn’t changed our mission—to make sure no family in our community goes without a Thanksgiving dinner.

Each Thanksgiving box includes a turkey or ham, seasonal sides, vegetables, dessert, and pantry staples. It’s more than just food—it’s hope, dignity, and the reminder that our community cares.

This year, we invite you to partner with us through Operation: Gobble Gobble to make Thanksgiving possible for hundreds of families across Coweta County and beyond. Whether through financial sponsorship or in-kind donations, your support helps us place these meals directly into the hands of families who need them most. Together, we can feed, serve, and restore hope this holiday season.

Notes from Perry Street

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When I was in high school, my mom had a lumpectomy. It was scary for all of us and my first experience with breast cancer. I remember her discussing what she would do if she did have cancer. My mother was a Yankee filled with moxie and a passion for Jesus Christ.

She was a strong, caring and passionate woman. But she would not listen to anyone who had horror stories about breast cancer and their treatment. My friend and neighbor, Pat Lincoln, said that was a big issue she also faced.

Fortunately, my mom’s biopsy was negative. She always advocated for her own health and the health of others. So, being my mother’s daughter, I followed her example by always getting regular mammograms and doing self-breast exams, including checking your underarm and rib cage right under your breasts.

I remember my mammograms very clearly. The nurse had my breast nice and tight in an X-ray machine. Moments later, she says, “Mrs. Winters, don’t breathe, don’t move … NOW Breathe… DON’T BREATHE, DON’T MOVE!” The nurse reminds me I am in good hands and this is what she does. She re-adjusts me and again takes my breast in her hand as though she is casually picking up an orange at the grocery store. And once again, the nurse says, “Don’t breathe, Don’t move,” and so on.

There have been great advancements in women’s breast health. 3D imaging mammograms are the newest incredible technology. These machines require fewer images and provide greater clarity. But we have to do our part, too. I want to encourage all women to be their own advocates. Find doctors you trust and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.

Last year at this same time, our friend Josie Exners wrote a powerful column for The Paper. She shared how she found a lump, which led to a double mastectomy, which saved her life. Be swift to contact your doctor if you feel any changes in your breast or anything in your body.

I want to honor some of our friends who have lost their fight with breast cancer.

Dona Eley and I were friends and counselors and attended church in Alaska together. Dona was diagnosed in 2014 and passed away from metastatic Breast Cancer in January 2024. She shared her journey in an incredible blog that has left an indelible mark on many lives.

Judy Wilson was one of my mother’s best friends throughout her life and her daughter JoQueta was my dear friend. Judy was diagnosed in 1991 with breast cancer and passed away in 2002 from metastatic breast cancer.

Our neighbor Barbara Bates Lee lost her stepdaughter at just 41 to breast cancer. Her stepdaughter was afraid and knew something was not right, but by the time she sought medical help, it was too late. She left behind her husband and two young children. As Barbara said “You CAN survive… If you pay attention!

I also want to honor some of my dear friends who are breast cancer survivors.

Vonda Holbrook and I were high school friends, and I was her maid of honor, Vonda was diagnosed in 2006 at 40 years old when she found her own lump and she had a double mastectomy. Vonda went back to school to become a nurse. Vonda’s mom was diagnosed in 1992 and passed away from metastatic breast cancer in 2000.

Emily Chandler Westergreen, owner of Underground Runway, was just 37 when she discovered she had breast cancer; she too had a double mastectomy. Donna Owens just retired and closed Parlor 34 Hair, but she was 45 and then 60 when she had breast cancer. My neighbor Pat Lincoln was diagnosed 2011 and she found her own lump. All these women are still cancer-free and a fabulous inspiration to me and so many others.

These are just a few of my dear friends touched by breast cancer. I share their stories to give us all hope and encouragement.

This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Be aware. You are not too busymake the time. Do it for yourself and those you love.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: What to Know

Piedmont Oncology highlights the importance of early detection, screening and high-quality treatment options.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, breast cancer is the second most common cancer and cancer-related cause of death among women in the United States, with one in eight women being diagnosed in their lifetime.

Piedmont Oncology recommends women start annual mammograms at age 40. People at high risk based on family history or other factors should begin at age 30. There is hope because when caught in its earliest stages, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99%. Annual mammograms can be conveniently scheduled online at PiedmontMammo.org

“It is essential that women prioritize breast health,” breast surgeon Frank Powell, M.D., says. “In addition to annual mammograms, women should do at-home self-breast exams at the same time each month while in the shower, in front of a mirror or lying down to catch any changes with their breasts.”

Piedmont Oncology doctors, nurses and navigators work together to provide personalized highquality treatment plans for patients diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Innovative breast cancer treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy or clinical trials,” Dr. Powell explains.”

Visit Piedmont.org/cancer for more information about breast cancer, a step-by-step guide to at-home self-exams and supportive services.

Breast Cancer Patient Story

Genetic Testing Provides Answers for Local Breast Cancer Survivor

Kathryn Rucker was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 31 years old. A 14-year cancer survivor, last August she received the devasting news every survivor dreads – her annual mammogram showed abnormal cells. Rucker’s radiologist noticed that the calcifications in her mammogram looked different this time and based on his gut feeling sent her for testing, which came back positive for cancer. With her cancer recurring, Rucker’s care team at Piedmont Newnan encouraged her to get genetic testing again, as there have been advancements in genetics and many more mutations can now be identified. In 2010, she tested negative for a genetic mutation, but this time she found out she had a CDHI gene mutation – something that was not tested for 14 years ago. “Getting the genetic results was such a relief, because it explained why my cancer came back and gave me a better treatment plan.” A subsequent MRI showed stage 1 cancer in her previous spot and a new small lump in her other breast. She had a double mastectomy, 6 rounds of chemo and 16 rounds of radiation and is now cancer free. “I am so thankful for the support of my entire care team, working together and giving me peace of mind, and for their ability to catch it so early and save my life. I was disappointed to hear I had cancer again, but this time I knew I was going to be okay.”

Schedule your mammogram today.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) guidelines recommend a baseline mammogram at the age of 40 and a yearly screening afterwards for women of average risk. Empower yourself and book your mammogram at piedmontmammo.org or schedule on the Piedmont MyChart patient portal.

Local Ray Shavers, headliner, male vocalist nominee

Cowetan Ray Shavers is a nominee for Country Male Vocalist of the year at the 2025 Josie Awards in Nashville! He will be walking the red carpet into the Grand Ole Opry with wife/singing partner Rebecca by his side at the Awards on November 2nd. He says he is very honored to be in this category and whether he wins or not, they will enjoy and cherish this experience.

Ray has performed with many local musicians in most venues in this area over the years. He currently has his own band featuring Jacob Joiner on lead guitar, Allen Windom on bass guitar, Mark Pietrofere on drums, Steve Arnold on saxophone and Barefoot Slim Hall on steel guitar. Ray plays guitar and is lead singer and his wife, Rebecca, sings harmony. They perform mostly Ray’s originals and some classic country honoring artists such as Merle Haggard, Toby Keith and Hank, Jr.

They are presently rehearsing for the Southern Music Festival at the Phenix Drag Strip in Phenix City, AL on November 8. Ray will be the headliner.

Ray and Rebecca also perform as a duo. Ray plays along with his original studio track they recorded in Nashville at Omni Sound Studio with some of the best studio musicians in Nashville.

Bill McDermott, award-winning producer at Omni, said Ray’s songs are stellar! He’s produced many famous stars and said Ray is a very solid songwriter and music arranger and that his songs are relatable, timeless and unique.

Shaver’s song “Drink Her Gone”is currently at number 60 on Cashbox Music Charts thanks to his manager, Beverly Gosden Jenkins at BGJ Promotions and Music Group.

He also did a video for “Drink Her Gone”which was recorded at the private Music Barn in Moreland. The video is on Ray Shavers music channel on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@rayshavers7240).

Ray has also been a featured artist two times in Cashbox Magazine in the past few months.

Good luck to you, Ray, at the Josie Music Awards on November 2nd. We are hometown proud.

Halloween has always been a time of anticipation, excitement, and maybe a little mischief. But as the decades have passed, the way we celebrate has changed in more ways than we could have imagined.

For many seniors, looking back at the Halloweens of their youth is a delightful trip down memory lane – full of homemade costumes, neighborhood traditions and the thrill of a good ghost story.

Back in the day, (I can’t believe I just used that phrase) costumes weren’t store-bought, they were homemade and often pieced together from whatever was lying around. A simple sheet transformed into a ghost and a little makeup turned a child into a pirate or a witch.

Trick-or-treating felt like an adventure with kids roaming the neighborhood long after dark, pillowcases heavy with candy and without parent supervision. And who could forget the classic popcorn balls, candied apples and homemade goodies that were handed out before store-bought treats became the norm?

Halloween parties were simpler yet somehow spookier: bobbing for apples, telling ghost stories by candlelight, and, of course, the occasional harmless prank on unsuspecting neighbors or friends. We had a neighbor on the corner who every year had a huge hotdog roast. Everyone in the neighborhood would drop by there at some point, place a hotdog on a stick and hold it in the fire. At the time, it seemed like it must have been the biggest party in the world. I wonder if that family knew they were making memories that would last over 60 years!

Today, Halloween has transformed. Costumes are elaborate and often straight out of a movie or cartoon. Trick-or-treating has become more structured with parents closely monitoring routes and their children. Many families are opting for trunk-or-treat events, fall festivals and the munchkin parade around the square instead. Haunted houses have gone from simple setups in a neighbor’s garage or yard, to full theatrical productions.

For seniors, Halloween can still be a fun time.

Hosting a gathering with family or friends can bring back the magic and excitement. You can still share old ghost stories, watch classic horror films or even dress up for the occasion. Grandkids would love hearing about your Halloween escapades and what costume you wore.

A simple way to get the Halloween spirit back is by decorating. Whether it’s pumpkins, autumn wreaths or a few playful skeletons, adding a touch of Halloween charm can bring you joy and a smile. And of course, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters is a perfect way to stay connected to the community. Even if kids don’t roam the streets as freely as they once did, you can still get a smile when a little gremlin walks up to your door.

Halloween may have changed, but the excitement and fun remains timeless.

This Halloween celebrate by embracing nostalgia, creating new traditions and sharing the joy of the season with friends and loved ones. After all, the spirit of Halloween isn’t just about ghosts and goblins; it’s about laughter, storytelling and the magic of a holiday that continues to delight all generations.

Barbecue to Fight Childhood Cancer October 25th

The Optimist Club of Senoia will host its annual barbecue Saturday, October 25 in front of the Senoia Farmers’ Market (40 Travis Street) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The proceeds from this fund raiser will be used to fight childhood cancer through the Aflac Cancer Center.

Food featured at the barbecue will include the traditional Senoia recipe of Brunswick stew prepared by Carl, Jim, and Ray McKnight along with many volunteers. Pulled pork will be prepared by Fredene Wheelus. All items are “to go”. Quarts of stew are $15, and pounds of pulled pork are $20. This year you can preorder these items online by going to https://optimistclubofsenoia.org/annual-bbq/. You can also contact an active member of the local Optimist Club or call 770-312-9300 or 770-833-9242 to place your order, especially if you won’t be able to make it on October 25th and need to have your purchase held for you. You can also email the club at senoiaoptimistclub@gmailcom with your order or a question.

Especially for customers who preorder, the Optimist Club offers a “drive-thru” option. During the hours of the sale (10 a.m. to 1 p.m.), customers may call 770-312-9300 or 770-833-9242 and give an approximate time that they will be coming up Travis Street where the sale will be set up. All of the pre-sales will be staged so their order can be pulled and made available. If their purchase was made online, they will have already paid for their items which will expedite the buying experience so as to not restrict traffic.

Help make this special barbecue a success in raising funds to fight childhood cancer through the Aflac Cancer Center!

Coweta County 4-H Excels in Animal Science Competitions

Bill Hammond – Coweta County 4-H Extension Agent

Coweta County 4-H youth continue to raise the bar in Animal Science events, earning multiple Master 4-H titles through outstanding performances in Dairy Judging, Poultry Judging, Horse Judging, and Horse Quiz Bowl. Guided by dedicated volunteer coaches and driven by teamwork and determination, these young people have turned their interest in animals into leadership and lifelong learning.

Under coaches Vickie Lummus and Julie Pruett, Coweta’s Horse Judging and Horse Quiz Bowl Teams displayed exceptional skill. In Horse Quiz Bowl, members Avery Pruett, Josie Roberson, Claire Lummus, Elena Williams, Prissy McGuire, and Kira Lawson combined equine knowledge with teamwork to master the competition. Horse Judging team members Josie Roberson, Prissy McGuire, Josiah Benjamin, and Claire Lummus excelled in conformation and performance evaluation, earning state recognition.

Coach Vickie Lummus credits success to mentorship and inclusion. “You don’t have to own a horse to be successful — we encourage all to learn and drive themselves to succeed. My favorite thing is watching youth develop passion and confidence, realizing that every member has something important to contribute.”

The Dairy Judging Team was coached by Master 4-H’ers Josie Roberson and Josiah Benjamin, assisted by volunteers Chris Ritts, Kirk Butcher, and Stephanie Butcher, Coweta’s Agricultural and Natural Resources Agent. Team members Justice Benjamin, Josiah Benjamin, Josie Roberson, and Lesley Nichols earned Master 4-H titles for their precision in evaluating dairy cattle.

Lesley shared, “Through Dairy Judging, I gained critical thinking, communication, and a new love for cows that will last a lifetime.”

The Poultry Judging Team, coached by Bryan Massengale and Marinda Halstead, continued Coweta’s strong showing. Members Justice Benjamin, Avery Pruett, Josiah Benjamin, and Colin Rhymer demonstrated expertise in evaluating carcasses, egg quality, and production hens — with Justice earning High Individual honors.

Bryan, a Coweta 4-H alumnus who has coached for 19 years, said, “I love seeing kids achieve their goals with a passion for poultry.” Marinda, a 2019 Coweta 4-H graduate and former competitor, now helps coach the next generation, continuing a legacy of leadership and learning.

Team member Avery Pruett, now a freshman at the University of Georgia majoring in Animal Bioscience, reflected, “As a member of the Horse Quiz Bowl and Poultry Judging teams, I learned to think quickly and communicate effectively — skills I’ll use in college and beyond.”

Recent graduate Josie Roberson, now studying Agricultural Education at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, says 4-H was life-changing. “That’s the beauty of this program — it doesn’t give up on people. Even when you don’t believe in yourself yet, someone in 4-H does. It’s where challenges become steppingstones and leaders are grown.”

While most Coweta 4-H members come from suburban or rural areas, their enthusiasm for livestock and animal science has grown through hands-on programs and volunteer mentorship. Josiah Benjamin says, “The contests helped me evaluate and process information under pressure — real-life skills I’ll need in my future.” His brother, Justice, now studying Accounting and Supply Chain Management at UGA, credits 4-H for building focus and discipline that continue to serve him.

From the show ring to the classroom, Coweta County 4-H youth and alumni continue to demonstrate the

power of learning by doing. Their dedication, curiosity, and teamwork reflect the heart of 4-H — growing leaders who will shape the future of agriculture and their communities.

The University of Georgia is an Equal Opportunity Institution.

Bill Hammond is the Coweta County 4-H Youth Development Agent. His role includes overseeing all 4-H programming in the county including specialty clubs, S.A.F.E. (Shooting Awareness, Fun and Education) teams, volunteers, school clubs, and other 4-H programs and events. It is through his leadership and collaborations with community leaders that he can achieve Georgia 4-H’s mission to assist youth in acquiring knowledge, developing life skills, and forming attitudes that will enable them to become self-directing, productive, and contributing members of society. He lives in Newnan with his wife, Jennifer, and 4 children, Gwyn, Alex, Anna, and Wesley.

Newnan Utilities Caring Customers program awarded grants to Backstreet Community Arts, Frayed Edges Foundation, and Meals on Wheels of Coweta

Through the Caring Customers program, Newnan Utilities and our customers are proud to help local nonprofits reach more people and meet real needs right here in Coweta County. Month after month, these small gifts come together to make a meaningful difference, supporting art, wellness, and essential services that touch lives close to home.

The Caring Customers advisory board recently awarded grants to three local organizations:

Backstreet Community Arts

Project: Sustaining Community through Creativity … A $1,000 grant will help expand fiber arts, stained glass, and evening workshops, creating more space for neighbors to connect and heal through art.

Frayed Edges Foundation

Project: Tools for Tough Times … A $3,746 grant will support bringing counseling and therapeutic resources into Coweta middle schools, providing students with healthy coping skills to manage life’s challenges and build resilience.

Meals on Wheels of Coweta

Project: More Trays and Film = More Meals and Less Hunger … A $2,254 grant will fund one month of trays and sealing film, allowing more homebound seniors to receive the meals they rely on each week.

“Being on the board for the Newnan Utilities Foundation’s Caring Customers program has been such a blessing,” said Sandee Crain. “I’ve truly enjoyed learning more about the projects our local nonprofits are working on. Del Webb, the premier builder of active adult communities and a national brand of PulteGroup, has broken ground on Del Webb Southern Oaks, marking the ongoing expansion of the company’s activeadult footprint in Metro Atlanta.

This newest development, which will bring the iconic Del Webb lifestyle to Newnan and Coweta County for the first time, joins Del Webb Lake Oconee and Del Webb Chateau Elan in meeting the needs of Metro Atlanta active adult buyers. Del Webb Southern Oaks will be located off Hollz Parkway, just north of the Newnan Peachtree Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership and Newnan Park & Ride.

Del Webb Southern Oaks will feature over 950 residences across over 450 acres. Anchored by an 11-acre recreational lake, the community seamlessly blends modern comfort with lakeside serenity, celebrating

Georgia’s natural landscape. Southern Oaks is designed to meet the needs of Atlanta’s rapidly expanding 55+ demographic with resort-style amenities and active adult living.

“Del Webb Southern Oaks represents an exciting milestone for our Georgia Division, bringing our proven active-adult lifestyle offering to Coweta County,” said Chad Plunkett, PulteGroup’s Georgia Division President. “Metro Atlanta’s continued growth, combined with Georgia’s strong appeal to retirees, creates an ideal opportunity for Del Webb to serve this market with our resort-style amenities and engaging community lifestyle.”

The groundbreaking ceremony, which was held on October 3, marks the initial phase of construction, with home sales and a grand opening anticipated in 2026. The community will offer the company’s innovative GenYou single-story floor plans in three different series, all tailored to today’s active-adult homebuyers who prioritize wellness, health, and social connection.

Central to the Del Webb Southern Oaks experience will be a state-of-the-art amenity center overlooking the community’s signature 11-acre lake. The expansive clubhouse will feature food and beverage, a full-time lifestyle director, indoor and outdoor pools, pickleball courts, tennis courts, bocce ball courts, an amphitheater, community gardens, and a dock and kayak launch on the private lake. Two miles of walking trails will wind around the lake and through the natural landscape, offering residents abundant opportunities to enjoy the scenic Georgia setting.

All homeowners will enjoy low-maintenance living, with professional lawn care included in their HOA benefits.

Southern Oaks is located in Newnan, which offers small-town charm with easy access to Metro Atlanta. Downtown Newnan’s shops, restaurants, and events are within five miles of the community, and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is easily accessible for travel.

Yamaha Strengthens Local Communities Through Nonprofit and STEM Education Grants

For Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America (YMMC), building world-class products is only part of the story. Just as important is building stronger communities right here at home. That commitment is at the heart of the YMMC Community Grant Program, which supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving individuals and families in Coweta, Fayette, Carroll, Meriwether, Troup, and South Fulton counties. Each quarter, YMMC reviews applications from local nonprofits, providing funding for programs and projects that directly improve lives in the community.

One recent recipient was RiverLife, whose grant award will supply materials to build ramps for seniors and individuals with disabilities. “With Yamaha’s support, we’ll be able to provide ramps that transform everyday life for seniors and people living with disabilities,” said Melanie Reeves of RiverLife. “These ramps mean more than accessibility—they restore dignity, safety, and the ability to remain active mem-

bers of our community. Yamaha’s generosity ensures that we can keep saying ‘yes’ when a neighbor calls for help, and for that, we are deeply thankful.”

Stories like this are why Yamaha continues to invest in local organizations that create meaningful change. “Supporting our local communities is at the heart of everything we do,” said Kristin Webb, Communications and CSR manager at YMMC. “Through these grants, we are honored to partner with nonprofits and schools that are changing lives every day.”

And this fall, Yamaha is extending its reach into the classroom with a brand-new STEM Education Grant. Focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, this initiative is designed to give students the tools and opportunities they need to succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. Schools and classrooms may apply now, with applications due by November 30, 2025.

From helping nonprofits remove barriers for vulnerable neighbors to inspiring the next generation of innovators, Yamaha’s goal is simple: to give back to the communities that have supported its growth for decades.

How to Apply

• Community Grants: Accepted quarterly for 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving Coweta, Fayette, Carroll, Meriwether, South Fulton, and Troup communities.

• STEM Education Grants for Coweta school: Applications due November 30, 2025. Apply today at: https://www.yamaha-motor-georgia.com/csr
