Nominations are now being accepted for the 2026 Coweta County Citizen of the Year award. This annual honor recognizes an individual who has shown outstanding leadership, citizenship, and a sustained commitment to improving the community.
“This award has a long-standing history of honoring individuals who embody the values of selfless service and civic leadership,” said Nancy Walden, Chair of the event committee. “We encourage everyone to think about the people in their lives who go above and beyond and submit a nomination.”
The public is encouraged to nominate a deserving individual by completing the nomination form which can be found on the Newnan-Coweta Chamber website. Nominations will be accepted through Wednesday November 12, 2025.
The nominee should live in Coweta County, and his/her civic and volunteer activities must be
centered in Coweta County and the surrounding area. Consideration will be given to those who demonstrate leadership and performance in multiple areas of community service over a period of years. The nominee may be an individual from any walk of life, and there are no requirements or restrictions relating to gender, age, race, religion, or ethnic background.
Individuals may not nominate themselves, and family members may not nominate another family member. Individuals must be nominated on the basis of their volunteer and community impact, not on the result of their paid work. When memberships and organizations are part of the nomination, specific accomplishments must be included.
The nomination form should include both the nominee’s name and contact information, as well as the nominator’s name and contact information. The nominator must provide a cover page and answer the four listed questions to describe the nominee’s contributions to the community and obtain two letters of recommendation. A one-page biography of the nominee must also be included.

Completed nomination forms and packages should be emailed to the Newnan-Coweta Chamber, info@newnancowetachamber.org or faxed to 770-253-2271 no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2025.

Bridging the Gap Operation: Gobble Gobble Thanksgiving Distribution Sponsorships
The Heart of Thanksgiving at Bridging the Gap
Thanksgiving is a season of gratitude, togetherness, and family. But for many of our neighbors, the holiday can bring more stress than joy as they struggle to put a meal on the table. At Bridging the Gap, we believe every family deserves to experience the warmth of a holiday meal shared with loved ones.
In 2024, a Thanksgiving box cost just $62, enough to provide a full holiday meal for a family. But as prices continue to rise, that same box now costs nearly $77 in 2025. Inflation may have increased the cost, but it hasn’t changed our mission—to make sure no family in our community goes without a Thanksgiving dinner.
Each Thanksgiving box includes a turkey or ham, seasonal sides, vegetables, dessert, and pantry staples. It’s more than just food—it’s hope, dignity, and the reminder that our community cares.
This year, we invite you to partner with us through Operation: Gobble Gobble to make Thanksgiving possible for hundreds of families across Coweta County and beyond. Whether through financial sponsorship or in-kind donations, your support helps us place these meals directly into the hands of families who need them most. Together, we can feed, serve, and restore hope this holiday season.

Every gift helps us put Thanksgiving on the table for families in need. Join us in Operation: Gobble Gobble and choose the sponsorship level that best fits your ability to give:
$1,000 Harvest Helper → Feeds 13 families
$2,500 Table Setter → Feeds 32 families
$5,000 Gratitude Giver → Feeds 65 families
$7,500 Community Feast Builder → Feeds 97 families
$10,000 Cornucopia Champion → Feeds 129 families
$15,000 Blessings Bearer → Feeds 194 families
$20,000 Thanksgiving Hero → Feeds 258 families
Local Impact: Every dollar and donation stays in Coweta and surrounding counties.
Efficiency: Over 95¢ of every dollar goes directly into our mission. Community Recognition: Sponsors will be highlighted on our website, social media, and Thanksgiving distribution event materials. Together, we can ensure families experience the joy, dignity, and togetherness of a true Thanksgiving meal. Let’s Bridge the Gap this Thanksgiving.
Not every gift has to be financial. We also rely on food donations to help fill our Thanksgiving boxes.
We are seeking:
Stuffing
Cranberry Sauce
Pumpkin Pie Filling
Corn
Sweet Potatoes
Green Beans
Jiffy Mix
Mashed Potato Packets
Gravy Packets
Cream of Mushroom Soup
Cake or Cookie Mix
Mac & Cheese

What this country needs is a good old fashioned Papal Conclave.

Like when the Catholic Cardinals all get together to elect a new Pope. They swear secrecy, give up their cell phones and are locked up in an area of the Sistine Chapel. And they stay there until they elect a pope.
You can read up on what all goes on in there; heck there is even a movie about electing a Pope called Conclave. Basically, the cardinals vote by secret ballot until a majority is reached. And a simple majority doesn’t cut it. Two-thirds of the Cardinals have to agree on the new Pope.
Beside no cell phones, there is no Netflix, Hulu and the food is edible, sort of.
What this country needs is a good old fashioned Papal Conclave. But instead of Cardinals, let’s get all the U.S. Senators and Congressmen together. No phones, no television, no staff, crappy food and a cot to sleep on.
And they have to stay there until they get America back to work and open the government. As of this writing, it has been more than 30 days.
Let’s point fingers at the guilty. Damn Republicans, why won’t they come to the table? Wait, it’s the damn Democrats who won’t come to the table. Someone needs to be the parent and tell all of them to go to their rooms until they can behave.
I would bet a nice sum that if all the elected officials were allowed to vote by secret ballot, things would be very different. No one looking over another’s shoulder, no group of officials herding behind the majority or minority leader in lock step while on camera.
No, just everyone voting their conscience … if they still have one and haven’t been brainwashed by their respective mindcontrol party.
It is sad. This is sad. This is their job and they are all failing at it. Another reason for term limits. Oops, did I say that?
And so government employees aren’t being paid. Food programs are shutting down. Think about that … more than 40 million people who rely on help from the government to EAT are going to starve. Talk about food insecurities.
So let’s do our part. Food pantries and kitchens and other non-profit groups need our help more than ever. People who have worked all their lives suddenly aren’t sure where the next dinner is coming from.
Got extra food? Please drop it off. This is Thanksgiving, a time of being thankful for all that we have. And Pilgrim and Indian school plays of course.
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at Winters Media.
Until next time.

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint by John Winters is …
One of the best tacos I have ever had was at an Asian soup bar.
The waiter said this particular taco was “to die for.” He was right. My foodie buddy agreed; more on that in a minute. Description: “Spicy crab, guacamole, and green onion in a crispy wonton taco shell topped with cilantro and spicy mayo.”
For the uninitiated, a Ramen bar serves noodles with various toppings and sauces in a large bowl. The base is chicken, beef, or pork broth with various-sized noodles. Honestly, their broths are way better than those chicken noodle soup cans. So, if you ever get sick, just order their chicken broth.
Once you have your broth base and noodles, you can add proteins like shrimp, steak, chicken, and so forth. Then, add various vegetables and an egg. And let’s not forget the level of “heat” you want. I like mine right where it makes you sweat on the top of your head.
I had the aforementioned crab tacos, and split some with my fellow Joint tester, Peyton Shelnutt. We also tried the tuna tacos, which were pretty amazing as well.

I had the grilled shrimp ramen because the waiter told me it was “to die for.” He was right again. Peyton, who is also executive director of The Newnan Centre and a Newnan native, said about her choices: “Just tried the spicy chicken ramen and spicy crab tacos at Ito’s Ramen Bar - both were absolutely amazing! The ramen had the perfect kick and rich flavor, while the crab tacos were fresh, crispy, and packed with delicious heat.”

So there you have it. Ito’s is a completely different restaurant than most are used to around here. So if you like a little adventure in your palate, you need to try them out. www.itoramenbar.com • 678-673-6000 •1067 Bullsboro Dr Suite D, Newnan Mon: Closed; Tue - Thur: 11 AM - 9:30 PM; Fri: 11 AM - 10:30 PM; Sat: 11:30 AM - 10:30 PM; Sun: 11:30 AM - 9:30 PM

Newnan Theatre Company extends its heartfelt thanks to Mary Caroline Moore for her years of selfless service, dedication, and leadership as Executive Director. Her vision and commitment have been instrumental in shaping the vibrant, creative spirit that defines NTC today. I know I speak for everyone in expressing our deep gratitude for all she has done for our theatre family. After years of pouring her heart and soul into this organization, Mary Caroline has decided to step back from her role as Executive Director, and we wish her the very best in her future endeavors.

As we look toward a new era, NTC is pleased to announce Dr. Emily Kimbell as Interim Executive Director and Olivia Ratliff as Interim Chief Operating Officer, serving in these roles through May 31, 2026. Both Emily and Olivia bring a wealth of experience, creativity, and passion to their positions, and we are confident in their ability to lead NTC through this exciting next chapter. In the coming months, the Board of Directors will begin soliciting applications for a permanent Executive Director to guide NTC into its future.
We are also thrilled to share that, in just the past 24 hours, Newnan Theatre Company has received over $10,000 in new pledges and outright donations from our incredible community. We look forward to recognizing these generous new supporters in the near future. Your enthusiasm and generosity remind us that the magic of theatre is alive and well in Coweta County — and the show will go on!
Change is at the heart of every great story—and we welcome this one with open arms. With fresh leadership, renewed energy, and steadfast community support, Newnan Theatre Company is poised for a season of innovation, collaboration, and connection like never before.
Together, we look forward to what’s next—on stage, behind the scenes, and throughout our community.

The Chefs column highlights our local culinary masters. They share a recipe that has a lot of meaning to them and thankfully, how to make it. (Well at least most of it, sometimes secrets must remain that.) This month’s chef is …
Chef Mychal Billiot is a distinguished Executive Chef and culinary innovator recognized for his leadership in restaurant development, creative menu design, and operational excellence.

As the Executive Chef of Big Joe’s Grille in Newnan, he brings a refined approach to contemporary Southern and globally inspired cuisine. Throughout his career, Chef Billiot has been celebrated for revitalizing dining concepts, mentoring cohesive kitchen teams, and delivering exceptional guest experiences. His dedication to flavor integrity, sustainability, and hospitality excellence continues to define his impact on the modern culinary landscape.
Yield: 4 servings
Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 30 minutes
Cream Cheese Grits
1 cup stone-ground grits
3 cups water
1 cup whole milk
1 tsp kosher salt
2 tbsp unsalted butter
4 oz cream cheese, softened
¼ cup heavy cream
Fresh cracked black pepper, to taste
Shrimp & Sauce
1 lb large shrimp (16/20 count), peeled and deveined
4 slices bacon, diced
½ cup yellow onion, finely chopped
½ cup bell pepper, finely chopped green pepper
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp Cajun or Creole seasoning
¼ tsp smoked paprika
Juice of ½ lemon
¼ cup chicken or shrimp stock
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tbsp chopped parsley
Salt and black pepper, to taste

1. Grits
1. Bring water, milk, and salt to a boil in a medium saucepan.
2. Slowly whisk in grits, reduce heat to low, and cook 20–25 minutes until thick and creamy, stirring often.
3. Stir in butter, cream cheese, and heavy cream until smooth.
4. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Keep warm.
2. Shrimp
1. In a large skillet, cook bacon until crisp. Remove and reserve.
2. In the same skillet, sauté onion and bell pepper in the rendered bacon fat until soft (3–4 minutes).
3. Add garlic and cook 30 seconds more.
4. Add shrimp, Cajun seasoning, and smoked paprika; cook 2–3 minutes until pink.
5. Deglaze with lemon juice and stock.
6. Stir in butter to finish the sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
3. Plating
1. Spoon creamy grits into a warm bowl.
2. Top with shrimp mixture and spoon pan sauce over each portion.
3. Garnish with crisp bacon and chopped parsley.

This Shrimp and Grits recipe was born from Chef Mychal Billiot’s desire to elevate a Southern classic while keeping its soulful roots intact. Growing up surrounded by the flavors of the Gulf Coast, he wanted to create a version that was both comforting and refined. By replacing traditional cheddar with cream cheese, he developed a smoother, richer base that perfectly balances the smoky, spicy shrimp and savory bacon. The result is a dish that blends tradition with technique — familiar Southern comfort with a modern, chefdriven touch.

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/

Stranger Things (season 5, Vol. 1, November 26) – The final concluding chapter of the hugely popular Netflix “Stranger Things” series is split into three separate sections, referred to as “Volumes.” November sees four episodes in Vol. 1, with episodes 5, 6, and 7 for Vol. 2 dropping on Christmas Day. The grand finale releases on December 31, 2025, for prime New Year’s Eve viewing.
This season’s fun in the Upside-Down world and in the town of Hawkins picks up in the fall of 1987. The core youngsters return to once again do battle with the villain, Vecna. Showrunners are hyping the show as the “biggest” yet, with an emphasis on throwing the viewer into the action from the jump. Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) is said to have a bigger role this time around, and “Terminator” star Linda Hamilton joins the cast. However, series fans will be happy to learn that Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is returning and is still on the run from government forces interested in harnessing her unique abilities.

Pluribus (premieres November 7) – From the pen of “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan comes an odd-looking series starring “Better Call Saul’s” Rhea Seehorn. The show is by Apple as, “The most miserable person on Earth must save the world from happiness.” The mercurial trailers tease Seehorn’s Carol Sturka living in a strange, magical world where anything she wants, she gets. Other details include that Carol is immune to a happiness virus of some sort. “Breaking Bad” fans will be excited to learn that at least part of the story takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Eddington (premieres on November 14)–l NO Fix Rating 5/10 – Director Ari Aster’s ongoing relationship with Oscar-winning actor Joaquin Phoenix takes on a slightly more intelligible aspect over their last collaboration, 2023’s alienating “Beau is Afraid.” Unfortunately,
“Eddington’s” provocative setup devolves into almost incoherence, as the Aster method takes over.
“Eddington” is set in the fictitious town of Eddington, New Mexico, in May of 2020, shortly after cities and states began to implement pandemic-era masking and lockdown requirements in March of that year. Phoenix plays Joe Cross, the town’s sheriff. The story revolves around a conflict that Cross has with the town’s mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), and Cross’s wife, Louise (Emma Stone). Even with the outstanding cast, “Eddington” is a picture that decides that ending with a deafening hail of bullets means something, even though it adds up to very little.

All Her Fault (November 6) – This limited series stars “Succession’s” Sarah Snook as Marissa Irvine, a mother searching for her lost child. A disturbing nightmare narrative unfolds as Marissa arrives to collect her son, Milo, from his first-ever playdate. But the woman who comes to the door of the house isn’t the same mother Marissa encountered when she dropped Milo off, and she knows nothing about the boy or his whereabouts. Dakota Fanning plays one of Marissa’s friends, as the search for Milo dominates the action that’s mainly set in Chicago. The eight-episode show is adapted from the novel of the same name by Andrea Mara.

Sovereign (November 7) – Following its limited theatrical release, the well-regarded “Sovereign” makes its Hulu streaming premiere in November.

The film stars Nick Offerman as Jerry Kane, a man who has immersed himself in the Sovereign Citizen movement, which sees US government laws as illegitimate. His radical distrust of authority spirals into tragedy after he and his teen son (played by Jacob Tremblay) become involved in a violent traffic stop. Dennis Quaid plays a police chief involved in the investigation.
Book of Clarence (November 11) –– l Fix Rating 8/10 – “The Book of Clarence” might be an uneven, irreverent, and outlandish experiment, but don’t call it blasphemous. I’d wager that it’s one of the most unapologetically religious and inspirational pictures in the last twenty years. The film stars LaKeith Stanfield in the dual role of twins, the title character, and his brother, the apostle known as Doubting Thomas. This brainy doubling decision provides Stanfield with a challenging platform on which to work at two different speeds, and in doing so, it shows the talented performer’s remarkable acting range. People of faith should celebrate what director Jeymes Samuel accomplishes within a thin veneer of Christian ideology.

:
Freakier Friday (streaming premiere around November 12) – l Fix Rating 6/10 –Disney renews one of its classic properties with the legacy sequel “Freakier Friday.” By leaning into the broadly appealing PG rating, the film effectively reminds fans of what they loved about the 2003 film, a remake of the beloved 1976 original. However, the jury is out on whether there is a future in a “Freaky” franchise, as nostalgia will only take one so far. Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis return as daughter and mother who, along with Lohan’s character’s daughter and a friend, go through another magical switching adventure. “Freakier Friday” is a light-hearted body-swap movie that rides on Curtis’s ability to balance remarkably between wacky comedy and genuine drama.
Thanksgiving movie suggestions: Planes, Trains and Automobiles (1987) – John Hughes’ comedy classic is a perennial Thanksgiving favorite. Steve Martin and the late great John Candy play two very different businessmen forced to travel together during the snowy holiday season. Their journey is as endearing and deeply moving as it is hilarious.
The Ice Storm (1997) – This contrarian, hardhitting drama takes place during Thanksgiving in 1973. The film is directed by Ang Lee (see “Life of Pi” and “Brokeback Mountain”). The story involves the Hoods, a suburban Connecticut family (played by Kevin Kline, Joan Allen, Tobey Maguire, and Christina Ricci). The story concerns the repercussions from a sexually charged party and the politics of the time. The stellar cast includes Sigourney Weaver in top form.
Krisha (2015) – This psychological drama captures one of the most intense and disturbing Thanksgiving family dinners ever captured on film. Writer/director Trey Edward Shults (see “It Comes at Night” and “Waves”) cast his real-life aunt, a terrific Krisha Fairchild, in the lead and shot the film in his mother’s house in Houston. Fairchild plays a woman who returns to her family for the holidays after being away for ten years. Unfortunately, unsettling demons come back to haunt her in this pressure cooker of a debut feature for the talented Shults.
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973) – On the lighter side, this heartwarming animated classic has the hapless title hero trying to put together a Thanksgiving dinner for Peppermint Patty, Linus, Marcie, and the gang. Of course, faithful dog Snoopy and the small, yellow bird Woodstock join in the holiday fun.

Pride & Prejudice, Oscar-nominated Sterling adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel about love, marriage, and class distinction in 18th-century England. Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen star as Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy. Rated PG.

In honor of Halloween, let us take a look at some spooky and scary things in real estate. While this list may not put fear into you, it might assist you the next time you buy or sell real property. For the real estate professionals and those around the industry, it may give you some laughs.

One of the scariest things in real estate for a Realtor is going to show a buyer a house when the buyer is not pre-approved with a lender. This can be a waste of time for both you and the client. If the buyer is not qualified to purchase, then they do not need to be looking at homes to make an offer on. It is also becoming more common for sellers to ask for a pre-qualification or pre-approval letter, particularly in higher price points, from the buyers’ lender before they are granted access to view a home. There are exceptions to this, but generally, this is a good rule to follow.
This next one may be more “tongue-in-cheek” but it can be true. As much as a family member, particularly a parent, loves their family member purchasing a house, they can ruin the transaction for the buyer. It is fine and healthy to be involved, but I have seen many parents overstep and discourage a buyer from moving forward. A parent showing up to the inspection with their own inspection equipment (yes, this happens) is typically a red flag. It is wise to step back and let the professional inspector, appraiser or whoever it may be handle their role. Some real estate agents still have nightmares from Dad pulling up for the inspection and checking the home inspector’s work.
A low appraisal in a real estate transaction can often kill the deal. “Low appraisal” is
one of the scariest phrases in real estate. An appraisal typically involves the lender hiring a third-party appraiser to determine the value of the home. If the value comes in below the contract price, then the appraisal is “low.” The seller, the buyer, and their representatives must renegotiate the deal with the new appraisal price. This can be stressful as tensions are often high. This is scary for everyone! A good buyers’ agent should be able to run comparable properties before you make an offer to make sure you are purchasing at market value. This can assist in avoiding a low appraisal.

“Camp 145” is named in honor of Investigator Eric Minix (badge number 145), who was tragically killed in the line of duty on January 4th, 2024.
Camp 145, a two-part adventure, will be a thrilling and educational experience for your children.
The first week of camp in June of 2026 will be dedicated to 8- and 9-year-olds, followed by a week for 10-year-olds. Each camp will be packed with engaging activities and events, ensuring a summer they will remember. The kids will learn about various aspects of law enforcement and visit Coweta County Fire Station 1 to meet firefighters and see the trucks and tools they use to save lives. They will also tour Coweta County E-911 and learn when and why to call 911 in an emergency.
These people aren’t criminals, but rather local business leaders and individuals who have agreed to be part of a unique fundraiser to benefit the Coweta Community Foundation’s Coweta Co. Sheriff’s Office Fund (CCSOF).

To help fund this initiative, the sheriff’s office will debut “Coweta’s Most Wanted.”
Coweta’s Most Wanted are Dan Judy, Doug Patterson, Jason Kanner, John Winters, and Stan Brown

As you read this, wanted posters are hitting fax machines and office walls across the county, as the names and faces of Coweta’s top 5 wanted
On November 7, volunteers will act as armed officers and “arrest” these people at local businesses in downtown Newnan between 10 a.m. and noon.

Once at the jail, they will be “arraigned” and have their mugshots taken. Each person must raise $2,500 in “bail,” with all proceeds directly benefiting the Coweta Community Foundation’s Coweta Co. Sheriff’s Office Fund, which helps fund Camp 145.
Join us in supporting a worthy cause and positively impacting our community.

Your contribution can help ensure that every child has the opportunity to create lasting memories at Camp 145 while fostering relationships with local law enforcement. Together, let’s make a difference.

Known as the silent killer due to its lack of symptoms in early stages, lung cancer is the second most common type of cancer, and statistically the most fatal. The American Cancer Society estimates a total of 226,650 newly diagnosed cases in 2025, with more than half not discovering their cancer until it has advanced or is in metastatic stage, making it even more crucial that those at risk receive screening as soon as possible.
“The most effective way to fight lung cancer is to begin treatment early on,” says Matthew Roberts, D.O., who specializes in family medicine, at Piedmont Physicians at White Oak in Newnan. “But we can’t do so if you aren’t aware you even have it. Following the guidelines, getting screened if you’re at risk—it’s all about staying on top of your health.”
Who is Eligible for a Lung Cancer Screening?
To qualify:
Age 50-80
Smoking history of 20 pack years (one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years)
Current smoker or stopped in the last 15 years or less
No current pulmonary symptoms, such as worsening cough, coughing up blood, or shortness of breath
No unexplained weight loss
Research suggests that exposure to certain industrial substances such as arsenic, some organic chemicals, radon, asbestos, diesel exhaust radiation exposure, air pollution, tuberculosis and environmental tobacco smoke in nonsmokers also increases a person’s risk of developing lung cancer.
“If you think you may be at risk, do not wait,” advises Dr. Roberts. “Talk to your primary care provider about scheduling a low-dose CT scan.”
So, how does it work? The screening process itself is a straightforward CT scan---no injections or medications are involved. The screening-eligible patient will simply lie still on the table that will slide them through the doughnut-shaped scanner, taking only 20 seconds to complete. Afterward, your physician will then receive your results and follow up with you via phone call to discuss next steps.
In the event that your CT scan comes back with normal results (hooray!), our recommendation is for you to continue annual CT scans for the next two years to monitor any changes. Your nurse navigator will guide you through the entire process and remind you when it is time for your next screening or for additional tests.
*Please note that 30 to 40 percent of lung cancer CT scans show abnormal results. Most of these results will be noncancerous (benign) but abnormal scans require close follow-up and further testing.
Even if you do not qualify for screening, there are steps you can take to protect your lung health, including:
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke
Limit exposure to air pollution and harmful chemicals
Stay up to date on vaccines
Practice good hand hygiene
Maintain dental health
Eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly
Get routine check-ups
