When I was in high school, my mom had a lumpectomy. It was scary for all of us and my first experience with breast cancer. I remember her discussing what she would do if she did have cancer. My mother was a Yankee filled with moxie and a passion for Jesus Christ. She was a strong, caring and passionate woman. But she would not listen to anyone who had horror stories about breast cancer and their treatment. My friend and neighbor, Pat Lincoln, said that was a big issue she also faced.
Fortunately, my mom’s biopsy was negative. She always advocated for her own health and the health of others. So, being my mother’s daughter, I followed her example by always getting regular mammograms and doing self-breast exams, including checking your underarm and rib cage right under your breasts. I remember my mammograms very clearly. The nurse had my breast nice and tight in an X-ray machine. Moments later, she says, “Mrs. Winters, don’t breathe, don’t move … NOW Breathe… DON’T BREATHE, DON’T MOVE!” The nurse reminds me I am in good hands and this is what she does. She re-adjusts me and again takes my breast in her hand as though she is casually picking up an orange at the grocery store. And once again, the nurse says, “Don’t breathe, Don’t move,” and so on.
There have been great advancements in women’s breast health. 3D imaging mammograms are the newest incredible technology. These machines require fewer images and provide greater clarity. But we have to do our part, too. I want to encourage all women to be their own advocates. Find doctors you trust and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.
Last year at this same time, our friend Josie Exners wrote a powerful column for The Paper. She shared how she found a lump, which led to a double mastectomy, which saved her life. Be swift to contact your doctor if you feel any changes in your breast or anything in your body.
I want to honor some of our friends who have lost their fight with breast cancer.
Dona Eley and I were friends and counselors and attended church in Alaska together. Dona was diagnosed in 2014 and passed away from metastatic Breast Cancer in January 2024. She shared her journey in an incredible blog that has left an indelible mark on many lives.
Judy Wilson was one of my mother’s best friends throughout her life and her daughter JoQueta was my dear friend. Judy was diagnosed in 1991 with breast cancer and passed away in 2002 from metastatic breast cancer.
Our neighbor Barbara Bates Lee lost her stepdaughter at just 41 to breast cancer. Her stepdaughter was afraid and knew something was not right, but by the time she sought medical help, it was too late. She left behind her husband and two young children. As Barbara said “You CAN survive… If you pay attention!
I also want to honor some of my dear friends who are breast cancer survivors.
Vonda Holbrook and I were high school friends, and I was her maid of honor, Vonda was diagnosed in 2006 at 40 years old when she found her own lump and she had a double mastectomy. Vonda went back to school to become a nurse. Vonda’s mom was diagnosed in 1992 and passed away from metastatic breast cancer in 2000.
Emily Chandler Westergreen, owner of Underground Runway, was just 37 when she discovered she had breast cancer; she too had a double mastectomy. Donna Owens just retired and closed Parlor 34 Hair, but she was 45 and then 60 when she had breast cancer. My neighbor Pat Lincoln was diagnosed 2011 and she found her own lump. All these women are still cancer-free and a fabulous inspiration to me and so many others.
These are just a few of my dear friends touched by breast cancer. I share their stories to give us all hope and encouragement.
This is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Be aware. You are not too busymake the time. Do it for yourself and those you love.

Everyone has their “go-to” place to eat. It might be with linen tablecloths and waiters in ties, or where you throw peanuts on the floor and carve your initials in the wooden tables. Whatever and wherever, it’s your “joint.” This month’s featured joint is …
It turns out you really can come back home again, at least for this long-time loved Italian restaurant. Milano’s Pizza and Grill, which was in a couple of locations in Newnan before moving down to LaGrange, is back. And back to its original Sharpsburg location.
It is a great collection of Italian food, with some Greek specialities thrown in. Pizzas, calzones, great salads, or try a couple of appetizers as the main course - I am talking Calamari and the Greek Combo Platter for my next visit.
Some great sandwiches, like the Italian Steak Sandwich, which should not be confused with a cheesesteak. Meatballs, Souvlaki chicken … so many choices. And dinner has all the classic Greek and Italian dishes you always want.
And honestly, one of the best bargains in terms of price and quality and quantity of food we’ve had.
Fellow foodie and frequent joint tester, Peyton Shelnutt, said “Milano’s has been around forever, and for good reason — the food is always delicious, comforting, and feels like home. It’s hands-down my favorite
spot for amazing Italian in town, so glad to have them back in Newnan.”
Peyton, who also runs The Newnan Centre, is a Newnan native and should know. So glad this place is back!
11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Modays - Saturdays. Closed Sundays 3500 GA-34, Sharpsburg (678) 857-3221

Piedmont Oncology highlights the importance of early detection, screening and high-quality treatment options.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, breast cancer is the second most common cancer and cancer-related cause of death among women in the United States, with one in eight women being diagnosed in their lifetime.
Piedmont Oncology recommends women start annual mammograms at age 40. People at high risk based on family history or other factors should begin at age 30. There is hope because when caught in its earliest stages, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99%. Annual mammograms can be conveniently scheduled online at PiedmontMammo.org.
“It is essential that women prioritize breast health,” breast surgeon Frank Powell, M.D., says. “In addition to annual mammograms, women should do at-home self-breast exams at the same time each month while in the shower, in front of a mirror or lying down to catch any changes with their breasts.”
Piedmont Oncology doctors, nurses and navigators work together to provide personalized highquality treatment plans for patients diagnosed with breast cancer.
“Innovative breast cancer treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy or clinical trials,” Dr. Powell explains.”
Visit Piedmont.org/cancer for more information about breast cancer, a step-by-step guide to at-home self-exams and supportive services.
Kathryn Rucker was diagnosed with breast cancer at just 31 years old. A 14-year cancer survivor, last August she received the devasting news every survivor dreads – her annual mammogram showed abnormal cells. Rucker’s radiologist noticed that the calcifications in her mammogram looked different this time and based on his gut feeling sent her for testing, which came back positive for cancer. With her cancer recurring, Rucker’s care team at Piedmont Newnan encouraged her to get genetic testing again, as there have been advancements in genetics and many more mutations can now be identified. In 2010, she tested negative for a genetic mutation, but this time she found out she had a CDHI gene mutation – something that was not tested for 14 years ago. “Getting the genetic results was such a relief, because it explained why my cancer came back and gave me a better treatment plan.” A subsequent MRI showed stage 1 cancer in her previous spot and a new small lump in her other breast. She had a double mastectomy, 6 rounds of chemo and 16 rounds of radiation and is now cancer free. “I am so thankful for the support of my entire care team, working together and giving me peace of mind, and for their ability to catch it so early and save my life. I was disappointed to hear I had cancer again, but this time I knew I was going to be okay.”
The American College of Radiology (ACR) guidelines recommend a baseline mammogram at the age of 40 and a yearly screening afterwards for women of average risk. Empower yourself and book your mammogram at piedmontmammo.org or schedule on the Piedmont MyChart patient portal.
The Thomas F. Chapman Family Cancer Wellness Center at Piedmont Newnan offers a monthly breast cancer survivor group open to those in any stage of their breast cancer journey. The group provides information, emotional support, education and resources for breast cancer survivors. The next meeting is Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. and is held at the center located at Piedmont Medical Plaza 1, 775 Poplar Road, Suite 340, in Newnan, next to the hospital. Cancer Wellness is a free program for anyone who has ever been diagnosed with any cancer at any point in their cancer journey whether treated at Piedmont or not. The classes and services focus on six aspects of wellness: Creativity, Nutrition, Knowledge, Exercise, Relaxation and Socialization. A full calendar of events can be found at www.piedmont.org/media/file/Cancer-Wellness-Calendar-Newnan. pdf.

Ray Shavers has spent most of his adult life in the Coweta County area. He’s worked here as a subcontractor laying hardwood floors to make a living, and he enjoys the creative process of it and meeting new people every day but what he says he really loves most is creating new music, writing lyrics, and arranging the songs in his own unique style. He says he challenges himself to make each song very different from the last one.
Ray’s band features Jacob Joiner on lead guitar, Allen Windom on bass guitar, Mark Pietrofere on drums, Steve Arnold on saxophone and Warren ‘Barefoot Slim’ Hall on steel guitar. Ray plays guitar and is lead singer, his wife Rebecca Shavers sings harmony. They are rehearsing now for the Southern Music Festival at the Phenix Drag Strip on November 8, where Ray will be the headliner.
Ray and his wife Rebecca also perform as a duet. Bill McDermott, award-winning producer at Omni Recording Studio in Nashville, said that Ray’s songs are Stellar! McDermott believes Ray is a very solid songwriter and music arranger and that his songs are relatable, timeless and unique. Ray has been nominated for Country Male Vocalist of the year at the 2025 Josie Awards and will be walking into the Grand Ole Opry on the red carpet with Rebecca by his side. Good luck to you, Ray at the Josie Music Awards on November 2nd. We are hometown proud.

Hello Fall! You took a long time to get here but as I write this column it is the first day I feel a little bit of fall weather. The sun is bright but there is that crispness I love. The Coweta County Fair just ended which is always the gateway into fall. I want to thank every Kiwanian who gave so much time and energy to the fair and everyone who attended. Thanks to you all this year we were able to provide 28 summer programs for children and teens to 1573 participants. It’s awesome to be able to enjoy the fair while knowing you are helping our community!
The other things I love about fall are cats, tea, and books. Trust me, they all go together. Here are some Fall book suggestions!
The Necessity of Lavendar Tea by Jennifer Moorman: This is a magical realism book with a heartwarming coming of age story. Our protagonist Kate lives in the small Southern town of Mystic Water in the 1950s. She has a special gift of being able to see the future, but she can keep the visions away if she drinks lavender tea. This is a book about grief, belonging and love. It is a perfect book to curl up with a delicious cup of tea!
Crazy Spooky Love by Melody Bittersweet: Melody Bittersweet is a sassy, sugar loving seemingly normal woman with a twist: she can see ghost. Her family has owned Blithe Spirits for years, but Melody wants to build her own business as a ghost hunter. This book is set in the leafy and charming town of Chapelwick in the UK. It has a cast of quirky characters. There was something soothing about this story. It made me laugh several times. There are two books in this series, and they are so good.
The Ghost Cat by Alex Howard: This is a lovely novel that follows a cat through all his nice lives. He has run into a lot of interesting characters over the years. This book is set in Edinburgh and (surprise) the cat is a ghost. If you love cats and a good story this book is for you. This is another magical realism tale which is so fun in the fall.
Immortal Consequences by I.V. Marie: I also love a good dark academia book in the fall. This book is set at Blackwood Academy which is at the edge of the afterlife. All the students are dead, but their job is to take lost souls to the afterlife. Unless you can pass the trials of the Decennial, a once-in-a-decade celebration that allows you to become an elite member of Blackwood Academy. This book is told from the points of view of six students, and it was full of action and mystery
I hope you get a chance to pick up one of these reads in October. Happy fall y’all!

You may have heard about the development in downtown Newnan at the old Brown Steel location. I have heard many different things regarding this property and its development; a conference center, a hotel, apartments, retail, restaurants, etc. In the rest of the article, I will share what is happening there. It is an exciting time for downtown Newnan!
57 E. Broad St. has attracted significant attention the last several years. The property, formerly the site for the business Caldwell Tanks, is located adjacent to the railroad tracks on 57 E. Broad St. and directly across from the historic train depot in downtown Newnan. The total size of the property is 5.59 acres. The city of Newnan purchased the property on March 12th, 2021, from the Broad Street Forum for $3,676,302, per the county tax records. A demolition permit was pulled on December 7th, 2021. Before the demolition, the property had many large industrial buildings in poor condition. These buildings had become eyesores and dangerous due to their poor state over the years. Now the property is cleared, vacant and ready for development. The city spent substantial money on 57 E. Broad St. since its purchase, with reports of as much as $7,000,000, including the purchase price, demolition, and development costs.
There were numerous interested parties in this location since the city purchased the property. On May 27th, 2025, the Newnan City Council approved conceptual plans for 57 E. Broad St. The plan includes a hotel, restaurant, offices, food hall, mixed use, parking, as well as access from Salbide Ave. On July 22nd, 2025, the City Council approved the sale of 57 E. Broad St. to Red Hills Hospitality Management LLC and Caldwell Development Industries LLC. As part of the deal, a 125-room Marriott Hotel is to be constructed.
This is a little recent history regarding the site. It will be interesting to see what unfolds. Reception has been mostly positive from what I have heard. This development should provide more amenities
for downtown Newnan, as well as more housing, office space and much-needed additional parking. There is a demand for a hotel in downtown Newnan, and this should help the local merchants with their revenue and foot traffic.

Capsule Reviews … New Rating System - A “Fix" is recommended with a rating between 6 and 10! a “No Fix” with ratings of 1 to 5 isn’t. http://dailyfilmfix.com/
The Witcher (season 4, October 30) – Season 4 is the first without Henry Cavill in the lead role of Geralt of Rivia. Stepping in for Cavill is Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth, who played Gale in “The Hunger Games.” This installment, along with season 5, will reportedly adapt from Polish writer Andrej Sapkowski’s best-sellers “Baptism of Fire,” “The Tower and the Swallow,” and “Lady of the Lake.” We will see if “The Witcher” continues to excite fans after Cavill’s exit. Given the success of the latest entry in the “Witcher” video game franchise, having sold north of 60 million copies, it’s likely that this series will still have life beyond its previous beefy headliner.
will remember the deadly Northern California fire that completely destroyed a small town. The movie focuses on the heroic efforts of bus driver Kevin McKay (McConaughey) and teacher Mary Ludwig (America Ferrera), who brave the flames to evacuate 22 children.
It: Welcome to Derry (series premiere on October 26) – This show is a prequel to Stephen King’s “It.” The tale traces the origins of the horrible clown villain Pennywise in the town of Derry, Maine. Actor Bill Skarsgård returns to the role he embodied in the 2017 and 2019 films. This expansion of King’s frightening novel pulls from his other works, with “The Shining” character Dick Hallorann appearing in the story. The series is planned for three seasons, with season one set in 1962, season two in 1935, and the third in 1908. Episodes will release weekly.
"The problem with binge-watching is that you lose three days of your life".
Honey Don’t (now streaming) – l Fix Rating 7/10 – After experiencing last year’s “DriveAway Dolls,” I thought I wanted nothing to do with director Ethan Coen and co-writer Tricia Cooke’s next leg of their reported “lesbian trilogy.” Their idea was to make a series of B-movies that prominently featured lesbian protagonists. What sounded like an intriguing concept felt utterly flat with the first effort. Thankfully, the uneven whimsy that hampered “Dolls” has been primarily abandoned with “Honey Don’t!,” a charming detective picture with a hero played by A-lister Margaret Qualley that most viewers will want to get behind.
SNL (season 51 now streaming) – With many cast changes and some new additions, “Saturday Night Live” will try to navigate the fraught political landscape as the show attempts to satirize the events of the day. The first episode will be hosted by Bad Bunny with Doja Cat as the musical guest.
(now streaming) If you liked this year’s horror sensation “Weapons,” you should check out director Zach Cregger’s 2022 entry “Barbarian.”
This ambitious horror entry is a nasty collection of scares that might make you check your red flags when you book that random weekend getaway. One extended flashback sequence in Cregger’s film is particularly artful. And by reaching into America’s past, Cregger gives us a satisfying, if also over-the-top ridiculous, backstory explaining the tragedy unfolding in the present day. And the bright, saturated colors of the flashback make a great contrast with the more current storyline. The juxtaposition helps boost Cregger’s entire production in an unexpected way.
The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (October 22) – This is a 2025 remake of the 1992 hit film that was directed by the late great Curtis Hanson (see “8 Mile”), who left the cinema world way too early. Mary Elizabeth Winstead steps into the role played previously by Annabella Sciorra, and “Longlegs” star Maika Monroe is the disturbed nanny previously inhabited by Rebecca De Mornay. The plot is simple, but beyond the thriller hook, this one’s success will depend on the performances and the pacing to be as effective as the surprising original.
Something Wicked This Way Comes (now streaming) – This 1983 Disney cult classic finally drops on the platform. The screenplay is adapted from the best-selling novel by Ray Bradbury. The story concerns the arrival in a small, innocent town of a fiendish circus led by the mysterious Mr. Dark (Jonathan Pryce). The cast is terrific with Pam Grier, Diane Ladd, and Jason Robards. This one might not scare viewers like modern horror films, but it is sufficiently creepy and an edgy entry at the time for the otherwise family-friendly Disney.

Abby’s Angels Foundation recently received an invitation to share Abby’s story at the Georgia GOHS (Governor’s Office of Highway Safety) Highway Safety Conference in Savannah August 10-13. We were deeply humbled and honored to have been asked to participate. To be in the company of law enforcement officers, who bravely put themselves in harm’s way every day to keep us safe from across the state of Georgia, as well as experts in the field of highway safety and the dedicated staff of the Georgia GOHS was awe inspiring. These are true heroes in every sense of the word. To say we were out of our comfort zone is an accurate statement, we are far from experts, just a family working to prevent further needless tragedies and trying to give our daughter a voice along the way.
Attending the awards luncheon and being completely oblivious as to what was about to happen, unbeknownst to us and in the most beautifully surprising way, Abby’s Angels Foundation was presented the Highway Safety Champion Award by the GOHS Director Allen Poole. This award honors individuals and organizations for their significant contributions to roadway safety within the state of Georgia.
This is dedicated to Abby, our family, Abby’s Angels Foundation, the TVOC course, Coweta County Sheriff’s Office (Georgia), H.E.A.T. Unit, Newnan Police Department, and everyone who partners with Abby’s Angels Foundation and supports our efforts to safer roads and lives lived. Thank you for telling Abby’s story, wearing AAF bracelets or keeping them in your vehicle as a reminder to drive safe and embracing our #1Life1Choice message. Thank you Director Poole, Roger Hayes (Director, Law Enforcement Services GOHS) and everyone at the GOHS for this most humbling recognition and honoring Abby’s young life.
“together we can make a change” ---Abby Bacho age 9

The LEWIS GRIZZARD GAMES, a pair of athletic competitions, celebrates this man of many talents. Honoring the accomplished sports journalist and amateur athlete, the 2025 edition of the LEWIS GRIZZARD GAMES takes place on his birthday weekend, October 18 and October 20. Sponsored by the Moreland Cultural Arts Alliance, Inc., which operates the museum dedicated to one and only Grizzard, the GAMES include two exciting sporting events: exhibition softball games and a golf tournament.
Taking place on Saturday, October 18, the Grizzard Games Invitational Softball plays at Lewis’ alma mater, Moreland Elementary School. The first pitch is thrown at 9:30 a.m., and it features celebrities in our region. Coweta Chaos, the award-winning girls youth softball team plays an exhibition game immediately following the celebrities match on the same field.
Spectators are invited to come out and cheer on the teams, and they are welcomed to bring their own portable seating; metal bleachers provide some seating. Food is available for purchase. The Grizzard museum opens immediately following the games. Admission to the games and the
museum is free that day. This is a great fall outing for families.
The Games Golf Tournament takes place on Lewis Grizzard’s birthday, Monday, October 20 at White Oak Golf Club. The scramble begins at 9 a.m. Players will vie for a GRAND PRIZE OF $2000 for the winning foursome in gift cards for the White Oak Golf Club. Festivities include a delicious continental breakfast and a SPRAYBERRY’S BBQ lunch. Grizzard described his favorite SPRAYBERRY’S as, “simply the best barbeque on earth!” At the 19th Hole participants get to indulge in a “Birthday Bash Celebration,” including an open bar, music, a silent auction, and more fun.
Information and registration can be found at morelandadventure.com/events
From an early age Lewis discovered his passion for all sports. Around age 14, he declared his aspiration to be a sports journalist. By age 23 Grizzard became the youngest ever executive sports editor for the Atlanta newspapers. Lewis loved to play any sport; his love of sports never wavered. Playing for Newnan High School, he lettered in baseball and basketball. As an adult Lewis developed a passion for tennis and golf. “Playing two of his favorite sports seems a fitting tribute to the author and athlete. These Games hopefully will encourage players and fans to learn about Grizzard in a new way, especially young people,” says Carol Chancey, founder and organizer of the Games. “Fans of Lewis will want to be a part of these unforgettable gatherings remembering Lewis and his genius,” says Winston Skinner, President of MCAA. Proceeds from the Lewis Grizzard Games support developing exhibits and operating the Moreland Hometown Heritage Museum: A Tribute to Lewis Grizzard in Moreland, Georgia. On the only Tuesday that the Kiwanis Coweta County Fair is held, the parking lot is crammed with dozens of yellow school buses.
They start arriving around 11 a..m. Soon, roughly 600 special needs children and adults, as well as parents and caregivers, begin to swarm the rides.
The Ferris Wheel is always a big hit, as is the merrygo-round and the bumper cars.
For a couple of hours or so, kids are picked up out of their wheel chairs and get to ride and slide and twirl and … well, have some semblance of a “normal” childhood. And then after all the rides, they all sit together for lunch.
Ask any Kiwanian and they will tell you the best time of the fair is those few hours on that Tuesday when the gates are open solely for those kids, adults, parents and caregivers.
From Coweta Schools Press Release
The Coweta County School System’s average composite SAT score for the graduating class of 2025 rose 14 points over the previous year’s class, placing Coweta graduates well above state and national averages on the college entrance exam.
Coweta Schools’ average SAT score rose to 80 points above the national SAT average on the college entrance exam, and 47 points above the state average. Georgia students have outscored the nation on average SAT performance for the last eight years.
The College Board’s annual SAT report presents data only for students in the class of 2025 who took the SAT during high school, SAT takers are counted only once, and only the most recent score is included. This year, system-wide performance on the SAT college entrance exam placed the Coweta County School System in about the top 15 percent of mean SAT scores among the 182 Georgia school districts reporting in 2025.
“Our school system is very pleased to see our students maintain this high level of performance,” said Coweta Superintendent Evan Horton. “That is the result of several years of good work from all Coweta schools, pre-K
through 12th grade, and the support of parents and our community in that work.”
“Our primary focus as a school system is about building the competitiveness of our graduates, whether that is through college readiness or other post-secondary paths,” said Horton. “But this is also about the competitiveness of our whole community, too. By investing in students and helping them achieve this level of performance, we are making Coweta County the kind of place that others want to invest in as well.”
“With our growing accelerated career and dual enrollment programs and our relentless focus on literacy and mathematics in grades Kindergarten through 12th grade, we continue to see our students outperform the state and national average SAT scores,” said Director of Secondary Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Chase Puckett.
“The focus on continuous school improvement by our teachers and our leaders is continuing to benefit our students and our community.”
Coweta County scored an average 557 in Reading/Writing and 520 in Math for a total score of 1,076. Georgia averages were 526 in Reading/ Writing, 502 in Math and 1,029 Overall. The nation averages were 508 in Reading/Writing, 488 in Math and 996 Overall.

The Heart of Thanksgiving at Bridging the Gap
Thanksgiving is a season of gratitude, togetherness, and family. But for many of our neighbors, the holiday can bring more stress than joy as they struggle to put a meal on the table. At Bridging the Gap, we believe every family deserves to experience the warmth of a holiday meal shared with loved ones.
In 2024, a Thanksgiving box cost just $62, enough to provide a full holiday meal for a family. But as prices continue to rise, that same box now costs nearly $77 in 2025. Inflation may have increased the cost, but it hasn’t changed our mission—to make sure no family in our community goes without a Thanksgiving dinner.
Each Thanksgiving box includes a turkey or ham, seasonal sides, vegetables, dessert, and pantry staples. It’s more than just food—it’s hope, dignity, and the reminder that our community cares.
the highest overall average at 1,107 with scores of 571 in Reading/Writing and 536 in Math. East Coweta was next at 1,071 with a 553 average in Reading/Writing and 518 average in Math.
Newnan’s total score was 1,053 with averages of 548 in Reading/Writing and 505 in Math.
Coweta’s high school graduates showed
higher performance on reading and writing and math sections of the exam, for a 14-point overall increase in SAT scores, during a year that state and national averages on the exam remained static overall. All three Coweta high schools showed improvement in student SAT performance in all areas in 2025.

Gifts from friends and loved ones can make people feel cherished and valued. When these people are the older adults in one’s life, such as parents or grandparents, gifts take on additional meaning because they can warm the hearts of very special people.
Finding unique gifts for seniors can be challenging because these individuals have been receiving gifts for many years, and many may already have everything they need. Inspiration is everything when shopping for the ideal gifts for the older adults in one’s life, and the following are some categories that can serve as a springboard for what to get seniors this holiday season.
Although people like to say, “age is just a number,” getting older may come with a few aches and pains and even some limitations. Gifts like seat cushions that correct posture or easy on/off sock helpers can be helpful. Cloud foam slippers or even a grab bar that attaches into the hood of the car door can be great gifts.
Fitness and fun
Gifts that cater to interests, well-being and more can be ideal. Active seniors may appreciate a fitness tracker or exercise equipment (yoga mat, light dumbbells, resistance bands) to facilitate fitness goals. Storage solutions for hobbies and craft items also can be fitting. See-through containers to store paints or beads or an organizer for fishing tackle can make seniors’ hobbies even more enjoyable. A roll-up puzzle mat is great for puzzle enthusiasts to protect their work until completion.
Seniors also may appreciate gifts that touch the heart. A custom recipe cutting board that features a treasured family recipe may become a cherished item. A customized photo calendar that features family members’ birthdays and other key events also is thoughtful. A photo jewelry locket makes a nice gift for a special senior woman.
Seniors typically have more time to devote to travel than younger adults, and gifts that cater to their wanderlust are a perfect fit. Digital GPS-based devices that connect to keys or luggage can help prevent lost items while traveling. Bright luggage that won’t get mixed up at the baggage carousel or ergonomic neck pillows that facilitate napping on a flight also can be appreciated. Those who know destinations the seniors in their lives may want to visit can purchase plane or cruise tickets as a generous gift for someone special.
Various categories can provide ample inspiration when shopping for gifts for seniors this holiday season.

For Yamaha Motor Manufacturing Corporation of America (YMMC), building world-class products is only part of the story. Just as important is building stronger communities right here at home.
That commitment is at the heart of the YMMC Community Grant Program, which supports 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving individuals and families in Coweta, Fayette, Carroll, Meriwether, Troup, and South Fulton counties. Each quarter, YMMC reviews applications from local nonprofits, providing funding for programs and projects that directly improve lives in the community.
One recent recipient was RiverLife, whose grant award will supply materials to build ramps for seniors and individuals with disabilities. "With Yamaha's support, we'll be able to provide ramps that transform everyday life for seniors and people living with disabilities," said Melanie Reeves of RiverLife. "These ramps mean more than accessibility—they restore dignity, safety, and the ability to remain active members of our community. Yamaha’s generosity ensures that we can keep saying ‘yes’ when a neighbor calls for help, and for that, we are deeply thankful.”
Stories like this are why Yamaha continues to invest in local organizations that create meaningful change. “Supporting our local communities is at the heart of everything we do,” said Kristin Webb, Communications and CSR manager at YMMC. “Through these grants, we are honored to partner with nonprofits and schools that are changing lives every day.”
And this fall, Yamaha is extending its reach into the classroom with a brand-new STEM Education Grant. Focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, this initiative is designed to give students the tools and opportunities they need to succeed in tomorrow’s workforce. Schools and classrooms may apply now, with applications due by November 30, 2025.
From helping nonprofits remove barriers for vulnerable neighbors to inspiring the next generation of innovators, Yamaha’s goal is simple: to give back to the communities that have supported its growth for decades.
• Community Grants: Accepted quarterly for 501(c)(3) nonprofits serving Coweta, Fayette, Carroll, Meriwether, South Fulton, and Troup communities.
• STEM Education Grants for Coweta school: Applications due November 30, 2025. Apply today at: https://www.yamaha-motor-georgia.com/csr
