MESSAGE FROM THE WING COMMANDER I am honoured to welcome you to the 2022 Cold Lake Air Show, organized and executed in partnership with the City of Cold Lake and our generous sponsors, recognizing the hard work and dedication of our frontline heroes. After two years of navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic we are thrilled to be able to host the Cold Lake Air Show once again with support from the Lakeland region and surrounding communities. The strong ties we have within the local region allow us to work together to bring this impressive event to our community, attracting visitors from afar. Every Cold Lake Air Show, we look forward to having the opportunity to invite our valued guests onto 4 Wing to demonstrate the capabilities, skills, and professionalism of the Canadian Armed Forces and specifically, the Royal Canadian Air Force. This weekend’s air show is packed full of impressive aerial demonstrations by military and civilian performers throughout North America. Military performers include the United States Air Force F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, the Canadian Armed Forces Snowbirds, the CF-18 Demo Team, a CH-148 Cyclone, the Canadian Armed Forces Parachute Team — the Skyhawks and a simulated air-to-air (AAR) refuelling mission with a tanker and fighter aircraft. The list of civilian performers includes Gord Price Air Shows flying a prototype Yakovlev YAK-50, of which estimates are about 66 left in the world. Gord is a former RCAF and Air Canada pilot and is retiring after this Air Show season having started in 1976! Kyle Fowler will impress with his aerial artistry in his homebuilt yellow 1986 Long-EZ which is probably the most unique looking aircraft at the Cold Lake Air Show. Families will also have the opportunity to ride in the back of Jurassic Attack, a Triceratops themed Monster Truck! There is truly something for everyone in the family to enjoy. There is an impressive array of static displays, a car show, Kid’s Zone, a variety of food vendors, and so much more to see and do—all up close! The Cold Lake Air Show is a great opportunity for you and your family to interact with members of the Canadian Armed Forces and immerse yourself in the world of military and civilian aviation for a day. Enjoy all that the show has to offer by downloading the Cold Lake Air Show app to stay up to date on all of the events and important details. Sincerely, Colonel David Turenne, CD 4 Wing Commander

SALUTING OUR FRONTLINE HEROES I n the Spring of 2020, the world was rocked as the COVID-19 outbreak began and more cases were reported in Canada and other countries around the globe. The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) responded to the pandemic by beginning Operation LASER. CAF members including Critical Care Nurses, personnel to support Indigenous communities, aeromedical evacuation capability, Canadian Rangers, and others were deployed to a number of locations across the country. The CAF provided support to long-term care facilities in Ontario and Quebec; First Nations communities; hospitals in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Ontario. Operation LASER has three objectives: To save lives, assist federal, provincial, territorial, and regional partners, and maintain CAF readiness, effectiveness, and resilience. The CAF also assists in Operation VECTOR, which allows the forces to be prepared to assist federal, provincial, and territorial partners with logistical and planning support, as well as transportation of medical equipment and supplies to remote communities, for the purpose of distributing COVID-19 vaccines. Healthcare staff at local hospitals across the province and country

stepped up to take on the added challenge of providing health services in a pandemic environment. Paramedics, police, and fire services all continued to respond to calls for support while ensuring the safety of those around them. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and many other essential businesses adjusted their practices and way of doing business to support the needs of their community. The 2022 Cold Lake Air Show is a celebration of all the tireless efforts made by our frontline heroes, both within the Canadian Armed Forces and those in the local community as well. Frontline workers have provided unrelenting service throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. They have been there to support our community members throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and overcame many challenges and changes to the way they operated. We are thrilled to be able to once again get together and celebrate all things aviation here at the Cold Lake Air Show. Thanks to the hard work of our frontline workers, we are making our way through to the other side of the pandemic. This weekend we are not only celebrating our love of aviation but also our dedicated frontline workers! We salute you and thank you for your dedication to putting the needs of your community first.

“The unsung heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic here at 4 Wing are the healthcare staff of 22 Canadian Forces Health Services Centre. They not only continued to provide excellent frontline healthcare but also allowed operations to continue at home, domestically and abroad with an entirely new set of tasks including contact tracing, operational testing and COVID-19 vaccination to name a few. These increasing tasks with no additional resources on an already strained system are deserving of appreciation, gratitude and recognition.”

“The COVID-19 pandemic has proven to be an especially challenging time for the health services. While many assumed a work from home posture the tempo at 22 Canadian Forces Health Services Centre has increased dramatically. We had personnel deployed on Op LASER in long term care facilities in ON and in remote indigenous communities and alternative isolation accommodations in MB, all the while putting their health and safety at risk on the front lines of the pandemic, mostly in the era prior to COVID-19 vaccines. Locally we continue to support COVID-19 contact tracing, assessments and treatment, COVID vaccination as part of Op VECTOR INTERNUM and operational testing, which can see up to 180 COVID tests performed in a single day. The hard work, dedication and sacrifice of all our staff here at 22 Canadian Forces Health Services Centre has helped sustain the health and wellness of 4 Wing personnel as well as that of Canadians across the country.”

A HISTORY OF 4 WING

T

he history of 4 Wing and CFB Cold Lake can be traced to 1952 when the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) selected the site for their newest flying station, the first to be built in the post-World War Two era. By 1953, the federal government had secured a deal with both Alberta and Saskatchewan for the use of a tract of land over 11,000 square kilometres in size. By the spring of 1954, RCAF Flying Station Cold Lake was opened under the temporary command of Wing Commander John Watts. Construction of the Ground Controlled Intercept (GCI) Unit, later known as 42 Radar Squadron, commenced in June 1954. Later that fall, 355 Permanent Married Quarters (PMQs) were also built. The Base’s rapid growth required more housing, so the construction of 200 more houses and a trailer park that could house 40 families was started. The first day of flight training at the station was September 1st, 1954 at the Ground Instruction School Synthetic Trainer Building. From then on, the station at Cold Lake became a self-reliant community with a number of services and activities including swimming, softball, winter sports, a library, and a theatre. From 1964 until 1968, the RCAF, as well as the Army and Navy, underwent a process known as unification. At this point, RCAF Station Cold Lake acquired the name Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Cold Lake. In 1971, Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE) was established in Cold Lake, by amalgamating the various evaluation establishments around the country. Its primary role is to conduct important flight testing and evaluations

for the CAF. As a lodger unit of 4 Wing Cold Lake, AETE reports directly to its chain of command, which is the Assistant Deputy Minister (Infrastructure and Environment) in Ottawa. The 1980s marked the introduction of Canada’s latest fighter aircraft, the CF-18 Hornet. Preparations began in 1981 for the construction of many new facilities at the Base to assist in the arrival of the new fighters On June 4, 1983, the CF-104 was heard for the last time over Cold Lake and the CF-18 was ushered in as the newest fighter aircraft at the base. In March 2020 a new 4 Wing Health Centre was opened in the same location as the original 4 Wing hospital. The facility offers a variety of medical services including dental, physiotherapy, pharmacy, care delivery, mental health, and preventative medicine. 4 Wing Cold Lake’s mission is to contribute to the RCAF’s delivery of Air Power in Formation to support Canada’s security needs at home and abroad. 4 Wing is currently home to 401 Tactical Fighter “Rams” Squadron, 409 Tactical Fighter “Nighthawk” Squadron, and 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) “Cougar” Squadron, all which fly the CF-18 Hornet. It is also home to 417 Combat Support Squadron, flying the CH146 Griffon helicopter, and 419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron, flying the CT-155 Hawk as part of the NATO Flying Training Canada program. In addition, 4 Wing Cold Lake is comprised of a variety of other operational and support squadrons, units and branches that support 4 Wing’s mandate for mission success.

The Cold Lake Cruisers Car Club and 4 Wing are teaming up to bring their homage to Collector Cars of Racing. Around 120 pieces of automobile history will take part in a display around the 2022 Cold Lake Air Show. Organizers say they’re looking to showcase the history of the cars and tell the story of how aerospace engineers played a part in making them first-place finishers at the racetrack in their day. Also showcased will be some vintage emergency services vehicles as a nod to the air show theme “Saluting Our Frontline Heroes”.

Gord Price has spent the better part of 60 years in the sky, be it with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), as an airline pilot, or performing in air shows. The 80-year-old is once again taking to the skies this summer in his Yakovlev YAK -50 for what he’s calling “The Last Tour” before he retires, and one-stop included on the schedule is the Cold Lake Air Show. When he’s not up in the air, Price and his family operate The Dam Pub in Meaford, Ontario, which prides itself on its selection of Whiskeys. His Yak-50 features the name of the bar emblazoned underneath the cockpit as a sponsor.

The F-15 Eagle is a twin-engine jet fighter. The F-15 was originally envisioned as a pure air superiority aircraft. Its design included a secondary ground-attack capability that was largely unused. The aircraft design proved flexible enough that an all-weather strike derivative, the F-15E Strike Eagle, was later developed. F-15s were delivered to the U.S. Air Force between 1974 and 1994.

The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who, in their grueling travels across trackless lands in prehistoric times, looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space, at full speed, above all obstacles, on the infinite highway of the air.

The KC-135 Stratotanker provides the core aerial refueling capability for the United States Air Force and has excelled in this role for more than 60 years. This unique asset enhances the Air Force’s capability to accomplish its primary mission of global reach. It also provides aerial refueling support to Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and allied nation aircraft. The KC-135 is also capable of transporting litter and ambulatory patients using patient support pallets during aeromedical evacuations. Nearly all internal fuel can be pumped through the flying boom, the KC-135’s primary fuel transfer method. One crewmember, known as the boom operator, is stationed in the rear of the plane and controls the boom during inflight air refueling.

The CC-177, as it is designated in Canada, provides a rapid delivery of troops and cargo anywhere in the world. One CC-177 can haul three CH-146 Griffon helicopters, one Leopard 2 tank, or as many as 102 paratroopers. Perhaps most useful of all, the C-177’s ability to fly long distances and land in remote airfields makes it a premier transporter for military, humanitarian, and peacekeeping missions.

In 1996, the decision was made to amalgamate three communities (Cold Lake, Grand Centre and Medley) into one city, taking the name of Cold Lake. In 2000, that process was completed.

The modern history of Cold Lake stretches back to the late 1700s when a trading post was established on the Beaver River. A tourist boom in the 20s and 30s saw the population growth as people flocked to take advantage of the fishing and rich, fertile lands for homesteading during the Great Depression.

The history of 4 Wing and CFB Cold Lake can be traced to 1952 when the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) selected the site for their newest flying station, the first to be built in the post-World War Two era. The first day of flight training at the station was September 1st, 1954 at the Ground Instruction School Synthetic Trainer Building. From then on, the station at Cold Lake became a self-reliant community with a number of services and activities including swimming, softball, winter sports, a library, and a theatre.

Whether it is supporting relief efforts or supplying warfighters across the globe, The C-5M has the demonstrated capability to carry more cargo over greater distances more reliably and efficiently than any other strategic airlifter. The Super Galaxy is also the only strategic airlifter that can link America directly to warfighters in all theatres of combat without being refueled. By eliminating an en-route stop, cargo can reach the warfighters a day earlier than expected.

4 WING UNIT HISTORIES 401 Tactical Fighter Squadron 401 Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) has its roots with the No.1 Squadron formed in November of 1918. No. 1 (Fighter) Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force was formed as a fighter unit in Upper Heyford, England on 20 November 1918 flying the Sopwith Dolphin and shortly thereafter the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a and continued to serve until their disbandment on 29 January 1920. In September 1931, the squadron was reactivated from the Fighter Flight of No. 3 (Bomber) Squadron. In August 1938, the squadron moved to Calgary, Alberta and was re-equipped with Hawker Hurricane aircraft in February 1939. During the 53 days it participated in the Battle of Britain, the squadron shot down 29 enemy aircraft, probably destroyed eight, and damaged 35. It flew 1,694 sorties (1,569 Operational hours and 1,201 non-operational), lost three pilots killed, ten wounded and 16 aircraft, with 2 pilots killed in accidents. In 1941, No. 1 Squadron RCAF was re-numbered to No. 401 Squadron to easily differentiate between No. 1 Squadron RCAF and No. 1 Squadron RAF. June of 2015 marked a new era; the historical lineage of No. 1 Squadron was reborn and 401 Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) was activated in 4 Wing Cold Lake, Alberta. Three months after reactivation, 401 TFS conducted combat operations in support of Operation IMPACT – Roto 2, the Canadian Armed Forces’ contribution to multi-national coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. 401 TFS is celebrated its 100th Anniversary in 2018.

including those of 409 TFS, are on standby 24/7, ready to respond to any aerospace threat and maintain a constant state of alert to safeguard North American skies.

410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron 410 Fighter Squadron was originally formed at Ayr, Scotland, on June 30, 1941, as a night-fighter unit involved in the defence of Great Britain. The squadron was disbanded on 1 April 1964 and reformed at CFB Bagotville on 11 March 1968 as 410 All-Weather Operational Training Squadron flying the CF-101 Voodoo. The squadron was responsible for the training of aircrew for the other interceptor Squadron. It also ran an annual Air Weapons Instructor’s course for CF-10 crews. On 11 June 1982, the squadron moved to CFB Cold Lake and re-equipped with the CF-18 as 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron. 410 Squadron was tasked to develop a training syllabus and instruct all Canadian Forces Aircrew on the CF-18 Aircraft in both air-to-air and air-to-surface roles. The first two CF18s arrived at 410 Squadron on October 31, 1982, and it received two more per month until the 138th Aircraft was delivered on September 28, 1988. The first seven courses the squadron ran were six-month fullsquadron courses in which the graduating pilots formed new CF18 squadrons. Following this initial cadre of courses, 410 Squadron trained CF-18 pilots at a rate of approximately 50 per year.

409 Tactical Fighter Squadron

417 Combat Support Squadron

409 Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS), known as the Nighthawks, was formed on 17 June 1941 at Royal Air Force Base Digby, Lincolnshire, England. The Squadron’s original role was as a night fighter unit in the defence of England during World War II. 409 TFS gained honour and distinction during the War, earning several Battle Honours including the Defence of Britain (194144), Fortress Europe (1942-44), France and Germany (1944-45), Normandy (1944) and Rhine (1945). The squadron was most recently stood up on 6 July 2006 at 4 Wing Cold Lake by amalgamating personnel and aircraft from 416 TFS and 441 TFS. On 30 June 2015, roughly half of the personnel and equipment from 409 TFS were reassigned to 401 TFS, as the Royal Canadian Air Force transitioned back to four tactical fighter squadrons. Canada’s Fighter Force is committed to protecting North America and defending Canadian sovereignty. CF-18 Hornet crews,

The 417 “City of Windsor” Squadron was formed as an RCAF squadron in England on November 27, 1941, flying Spitfires. In April 1942, the Squadron was sent to Egypt to join the Desert Air Force, the only RCAF Squadron in that theatre. Initially equipped with Hawker Hurricanes, 417 Squadron conducted combat patrols against Axis Aircraft operating over the Suez Canal. In 1970, 417 Squadron was again reformed, but from the No. 6 (Strike and Reconnaissance) Operational Training Unit (OTU) at CFB Cold Lake, which had been training pilots on the CF104 Starfighter since 1961. 417 continued as the CF104 OTU until the Squadron was phased out in April 1983, only to make a reappearance exactly ten years later in 1993 as 417 Combat Support Squadron. On the helicopter side, the main roles were, and still are, to rescue downed aircrew and to provide Medical Evacuation services (MEDEVAC) to both military and civilian communities.

419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron No. 419 Bomber Squadron was formed at RAF Mildenhall, England on 15 December 1941 as part of No. 3 Group, Bomber Command, under the first commanding officer of the squadron – Wing Commander John “Moose” Fulton. The squadron was transferred to various bases between 1941 and 1943, finally relocating to Middleton St. George, where it remained until 1945. As a result of its wartime record, 419 Squadron became one of the most decorated units of the RCAF during World War II. Among the aircrew, 194 service awards were distributed; perhaps most notably, Pilot Officer Andrew Mynarski became one of only 16 Canadians to receive the Victoria Cross during World War II. In July 2000, 419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron was reformed for the third time in Cold Lake. Currently, the squadron conducts advanced fighter lead-in training for Canadian and NATO pilots, flying the CT-155 Hawk.

1 Air Maintenance Squadron 1 Air Maintenance Squadron (1 AMS) has its roots at the foot of the Black Forest along the Rhine River in Germany at Canadian Forces Base Soellingen, where it was originally formed as 1 Canadian Air Group Maintenance Squadron. The German chapter of 1 AMS came to a close on April 26, 1993, as the squadron deactivated, coincident with the close of Baden-Soellingen. 1 AMS was immediately reactivated at 4 Wing Cold Lake, effectively absorbing and replacing the Base Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Organization (BAMEO). 1 AMS is a central maintenance organization integral to 4 Wing flying operations and continues to evolve with the role of the fighter force. The unit is responsible for providing a wide range of technical support services from numerous locations on the base and Cold Lake Air Weapons Range. It is one of the largest squadrons at 4 Wing, employing just under 500 personnel.

10 Field Technical Training Squadron 10 Field Technical Training Squadron (10 FTTS) was formed at 4 Wing Cold Lake in 1961 to conduct technical training on the CF-104 Starfighter aircraft. Since that time, 10 FTTS has also provided training on the CF-5 Freedom Fighter, the CT-33 Silver Star, and starting in 1982, the CF-18 Hornet. 10 FTTS will support CF-18 fighter aircraft operations by training highly effective technicians ready to meet

any maintenance challenge in the fields of avionics and aviations systems, doing so in both official languages. 10 FTTS has a tradition of using state-of-the-art instructional technology, including Learning Content Management Systems (LCMS) and the Integrated Maintenance Training System (IMTS). The IMTS provides a virtual CF-18 aircraft that can simulate a wide variety of malfunctions and maintenance procedures. All courses contain substantial hands-on training, using both the IMTS and the CF-18 aircraft.

42 Radar Squadron 42 Aircraft Control and Warning (AC&W) Squadron became operational in June 1955. Originally, the squadron provided radar control of CF-100 interceptors as well as radio broadcast control using geographical reference positions to Lancaster bombers equipped with CF-100 radar. By October 1962, 42 AC&W Squadron became operational as 42 Radar Squadron (RS) in the SemiAutomated Ground Environment (SAGE) system as part of the 28th North American Air Defence System (NORAD) Region. Today, Aerospace Controllers, Technicians and Operators train as a team to operate and maintain the TPS-70 tactical radar system in support of the RCAF training and Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) operations by providing Ground Control Intercept (GCI), radar surveillance and Tactical Data Link (TDL) capabilities for a wide range of joint operations and coalition exercises including Operation PODIUM, Exercises MAPLE FLAG and MAPLE RESOLVE.

4 Wing is also host to a variety of support and Lodger Units, which include: Deputy Wing Commander Branch 4 Operations Support Squadron 4 Mission Support Squadron Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment 11 Military Police Flight 1 Military Police Squadron 1 Dental Unit 22 Canadian Forces Health Services 4 Construction Engineering Squadron Canadian Armed Forces Transition Centre Cold Lake Deputy Judge Advocate Unit Fighter Operational Test and Evaluation Flight Fighter Standards and Evaluation Team Regional Cadet Support Unit Real Property Operations Unit (West) Detachment Cold Lake 4 Wing Conflict and Complaint Management Services Centre

HISTORY OF COLD LAKE H ave you ever wondered why Cold Lake has a Tri-City Mall? Or what a Kinosoo is? Cold Lake is located on the traditional territory of the Cree, Denesuline, and Métis peoples. The Cree people had told the tale of the “Kinosoo” or “Great Fish” after a legend of a massive creature taking the life of one or more warriors attempting to cross the lake. The modern history of Cold Lake stretches back to the late 1700s when a trading post was established on the Beaver River. A tourist boom in the 20s and 30s saw the population grow as people flocked to take advantage of the fishing and rich, fertile lands for homesteading during the Great Depression. Meanwhile, the community of Grand Centre (located just south

of Cold Lake) was also growing. The area was originally called Pineault Crossing and in 1937 changed its name at the behest of local Creamery Owner Ralph Bailey. In 1996, the decision was made to amalgamate all three communities into one City, taking the name of Cold Lake. In 2000, that process was completed, and Cold Lake became Cold Lake North, Grand Centre became Cold Lake South, and Medley (the neighbourhoods inside CFB Cold Lake) was absorbed. The partnership inspires the monikers of “Tri-City” or “Tri-Town” that can be seen around the community today! In the 2021 Census, the city reported a population of 15,165. From the past to the present, Cold Lake continues to be a historymaking community!
