INTERVIEW WITH THE CEO
Sinead Ronan

How are you finding your new role?
Well firstly I would like to thank the Chamber board and our membership for placing their trust in me. It is a huge honour, and I am excited to be moving into the next stage of my career with County Kildare Chamber, having been our Head of Public Affairs for the last number of years. When it comes to my new position in the company, I am first and foremost aware of the responsibilities I am undertaking. They include the wide array of personal and financial management, but also planning and executing the Chamber’s business strategy for the next 5 years.

When I look at County Kildare and the Chamber’s place within it, I can only feel confident about our future. Our relationships with our key stakeholders and policy makers have only strengthened and improved over the last number of years. We are continuing to grow our membership and our reach year-onyear, and I think this time of transition will only future this position.
Do you think your previous role has given you an understanding of what’s required as CEO?
Yes, as Head of Public Affairs for the Chamber, I was in touch with our membership on a constant basis. I formed and built relationships with all of our key stakeholders and Public Representatives through our lobbying and advocacy work.
As a result, I have come to this role with a deep understand of how the Chamber works and operates, with a deep knowledge of
the political and economic climate and the challenges and opportunities within it.
This has meant that I can continue to lobby and advocate for our membership, and the wider business network within the county, on a policy level whilst also combining it with the wider reaching role of CEO and the opportunity that affords.
What is the business sentiment in Kildare? Business sentiment within the County is strongly positive. In our latest sentiment for Q1 2024, to be published shortly, over 70% of our businesses stated they are confident in their outlook for 2024. 65% of respondents show there are planning for increased profits, while close to 70% are showing forecasts of increases in revenue.
Staffing and shortages with skilled labour seems to have taken a positive turn in recent months, with close to 50% of our businesses

stating they will not have an issue with staffing this year. When looking into this many of our businesses have taken advantage of new technology and hybrid working to tackle potential staffing issues. Close to 60% have stated they have taken on new employees and increased staff training programmes in the last 12 months.
Issues surrounding housing availability and delivery, and infrastructure development remain top concerns for Kildare Businesses, and this will continue to be a focus for County Kildare Chamber into 2024. The Chamber will continue to highlight these issues with our stakeholders, particularly in the run up to the Local & European Elections, with the Chamber in the final stages of producing its manifestos for both.
How does Kildare Chamber respond to the needs of its members?
County Kildare Chamber is at its heart a business representative body. I initially came to the Chamber in Jan 2022 as Head of Public Affairs. We were the first Chamber outside of a

and advocacy function within the network.
This has afforded our Chamber the advantage of providing insight and understanding to stakeholders from Kildare County County to Government Departments on the needs and wants of our membership, whilst also highlighting both the opportunities and challenges to business growth within Kildare.
As Chief Executive, what are your ambitions?
My main objective as Chief Executive is to continue to see positive growth within Kildare. We have a great county here, with such a huge variation in companies, with a mix of FDI and home-grown indigenous successes.
I want to ensure the groundwork is in place to ensure the growth and successes we have seen over the last number of years is sustainable and able to continue to thrive into the future.
This means long term plans such as Ireland 2040 and the National Development Plan must

come to fruition, whilst also taking into account we are living in a vastly different country to the one Ireland was when these plans were initially introduced in 2016.
Kildare is the fourth largest County in Ireland, with a population of 246977, and increase of over 11% since 2016. Our highly skilled workforce & the attractiveness of our region with connectivity to Dublin, makes us a prime location for business and investment. County Kildare Chamber represents 400 businesses who employ close to 50,000 people in Kildare and the Mid-East Region. We are the largest business organisation in the Mid-East.
For Kildare and the country as a whole to be successful, we need all our infrastructure to be working together in a sustainable way, this means looking at road infrastructure, public transport, housing location, healthcare and education. From our point of view, for Kildare to continue to attract investment and experience the growth we have seen over the last decade, our stakeholders need to deliver on long term planning commitments.

Q1 2024 Membership Sentiment Report
The Q1 2024 County Kildare Chamber Membership Survey has found that 48% of businesses consider housing availability the #1 issue affecting competitiveness within Kildare, followed by the availability of skills and talent.
The survey also found 88% of business owners believed more needs to be done to improve infrastructural development within Kildare. Each month it becomes It is becoming more and more evident that housing poses a significant challenge to Kildare’s ability to maintain its competitiveness as a county.
The shortage of available housing and rental accommodations has reached a crisis point, posing a major obstacle to the ongoing growth and development of our economic ecosystem. The housing crisis is now a pressing concern, impacting both workplace harmony and broader societal cohesion. We must enhance our investment in infrastructure and skills to ensure Kildare’s sustained growth. While we appreciate the introduction of the Infrastructure, Climate, and Nature Fund in Budget 2024, we recognise the need for further substantial measures in the future. Improvements in the planning process, grid capacity, and the National Broadband Plan rollout are crucial and must be prioritized alongside these investments.
County Kildare Chamber is currently in the process of preparing our Local & European Election manifesto, with a specific focus on housing and a renewed focus on infrastructure development within Kildare and the Mid-East region, to ensure we continue to build upon our success not just economically but also for the betterment of our communities. Through this submission, the chamber seeks
to highlight the critical role that affordable and accessible housing plays in attracting and retaining talent, fostering entrepreneurship, and bolstering the overall competitiveness of Kildare.
Local & European Election Manifesto 2024
On Friday, June 7, you will be called upon to cast your vote in the local and European elections.
Kildare Chamber urges both voters and candidates to endorse a resilient Kildare by pledging their support to our election objectives detailed in the subsequent sections. These objectives are aligned with Kildare Chamber’s dedication to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as identified by the Chambers Ireland Network, which serve as the foundation for all our endeavours.
While Kildare possesses the potential to embrace substantial economic and spatial transformations to assume a leading role in fostering balanced national socio-economic advancement for Ireland, this demands focused innovation and investment.
In 2024, candidacy in elections demands individuals who harbour ambitions for the region, possess an understanding of the critical policy matters confronting Kildare, Ireland Midlands-North West and Ireland and are dedicated to enhancing local communities, the economy, and the environment.

IN THE HOT SEAT
With Mick O’Shea CEO & Founder of MJOS Group
Q1) Mick, tell us a little bit about yourself?
Born and raised in an area called Summerhill in Co. Meath, just across the border with Kilcock, Co. Kildare and now living in Moynalvey Co. Meath with my wife Jennifer and 4 children Michael, Lucy, Edward and Alice.
I followed in the footsteps of my father, Mick Senior, who was the original founder of Mick O’Shea Heating and Plumbing which he started in 1978. After enjoying working alongside my father and his experienced team throughout my holidays in my teenage years, I finished secondary school in Scoil Dara Kilcock and I eagerly undertook formal training as a plumbing apprentice. On finishing this apprenticeship in 2001 I immediately joined the family business.
It was at this time Mick Senior turned his attention to the construction side of the business, North City Builders, entrusting me to take up the reins of the plumbing side. Between 2001 and 2005 the company experience massive growth with the turnover doubling year on year during this period. In 2005 I became Managing Director and the business continued to flourish. During this period I also became more involved in the construction side of the business and worked on several development projects which involved bringing greenfield sites through planning, development to the eventual sale of the houses.
In 2008 the recession hit, large scale developments were no longer happening so Mick O’Shea heating and Plumbing had to reinvent itself. The transition towards more efficient and renewable energy sources that was happening in the market here and in other countries for new builds was becoming
more and more relevant for the retrofit market. So I became involved with SEAI and became a registered installer.
In addition to this we turned our focus to meet the demand for ongoing maintenance and servicing of both domestic and commercial heating and plumbing.

In 2011, regulations were introduced that mandated that renewable energy sources be used in all new homes built. We immediately ensured that all the team were fully trained on the installation of air to water heat pumps and the latest technology available. In 2013 we were awarded the contract to install heat pumps into one of the first large scale developments since the regulations were introduced. At this point we had partnered with Panasonic Heating and Cooling as Elite Pro-Partners and our team were fully certified to install and maintain their range of Air to Water heat pumps.
Q2) Recently, your business has undergone a number of changes, can you tell our readers about MJOS Group?
Between 2011 and 2021 Mick O’Shea Heating and Plumbing went from strength to strength and had doubled annual turnover year on year and also winning multiple awards such as the North Kildare Chamber Business award for Innovation and Technology in 2014, a European award with our Heatpump partners Panasonic in 2014/15 and national awards with the heating and plumbing industry for different projects worked on in 2017, 18 and 19.
As the company had evolved during this time we decided in 2021 to re-brand as MOS Mechanical to encompass the wider range of mechanical services we offered to our customers. We now provide a comprehensive range of services from renewable energy solutions, home energy upgrades, mechanical ventilation, solar thermal and Solar PV. We work with individual homeowners, developers of multi-residential homes and high density apartments in addition to providing a range of services to commercial customers.
In 2022 in conjunction with Laois County Council we completed the retrofit of 143 houses which converted the homes from solid fuel or oil to a high efficiency air to water heat pump with Mechanical ventilation. These upgrades were completed within 9 months and is an excellent example of how the older stock of homes in Ireland can be successfully transformed to warm, comfortable energy efficient homes.
We established MSM Mechanical in 2020 to provide commissioning, annual servicing and maintenance for renewable energy technology including air to water heat pumps, mechanical ventilation and solar that MOS Mechanical were installing.
So then in 2023 we established Home Comfort Retrofits, a SEAI registered One-Stop-Shop providing complete home energy upgrades, individual upgrade measures and home energy assessments to homeowners who are looking to upgrade the energy efficiency of their homes.
This company’s establishment was a natural progression for us, as we had gained much valued experience over the previous 2 decades on all things energy and upgrades with MOS Mechanical, MSM Renewables and our sister construction company North City Builders.
Since registration Home Comfort Retrofits has been working with homeowners, landlords and managers as they upgrade their homes and buildings introducing energy efficient technology that reduces their carbon footprint while also saving them money on heating bills and vastly improving the comfort of their homes. We also have clearly seen the value of the investment in their homes.
One of the key selling points for Home Comfort Retrofits is that we have our own Specialist Teams to look after all elements of a home upgrade directly so we don’t have down time waiting for outside contractors. This means that projects are efficient and work can be scheduled and completed as quickly as possible so homeowners can get back to enjoying their warm, comfortable home.
We can offer renovations, insulation, windows and doors, air to water heat pumps, mechanical ventilation, solar and even electrical vehicle charging points as part of our services which come with grants from SEAI.
In addition to complete one-stop-shop upgrades we also offer individual upgrades for people who want to schedule gradual upgrades over time according to their needs and budget.

Q3) What is next for MJOS Group, as you look to the future?
In 2023 we established MJOS Group as a parent company to all the previously mentioned companies.
The business’s within the group allow us to offer customers be it small, medium or large a complete service for every aspect of their build, home upgrade or renovation.

We also work closely with many commercial customers. As many new housing estates and high density apartments are in progress we have been selected as the partner for the mechanical services to provide energy efficient heating systems and mechanical ventilation.
Within the MJOS Group of companies we now have around 100 people employed as tradespeople, management, office admin, accounts, financial, HR and IT from the mostly Kildare area’s.
As our companies continue to grow and possibly new companies arise, we envisage that the majority of our work will come from within Kildare and its closest proximities thus leading us to continuously needing to employ more staff and engage with other companies services from within Kildare and it’s nearest surrounds.
This being said, we foresee our group of companies having over 200 people employed by Q3/Q4 of 2025 and heading towards 250 in 2026 and much more after this.
Having recently won two accreditations with the All Ireland Business Foundation for Building Industry Entrepreneur and then the Kildare Enterprise of the year, it has proven that our investment over the last years in our staff and their wealth of knowledge, enthusiasm and will to be best in class is key to our future success and our continuous investment into all our upskilling and knowhow of all within our industry and climate will be where we see our further longevity taking us into the future.
Q4) Climate Action is at the forefront of every business today. Is sustainability an important part of MJOS Group’s ethos?
We are 100% committed to promoting sustainable construction and reducing home energy consumption. We educate and work with our customers to provide them with the best solution that is sustainable, will save them money and provide them with long term comfort benefits for their home and buildings.
MOS Mechanical will provide heating and ventilation system designed for new homes that will go above and beyond the requirements specified by the building regulations. We will utilise the latest
technology and installation quality controls ensure the systems will operate as designed to achieve maximum energy savings for the homeowners over time.
Home Comfort Retrofits offer a One-StopShop solution which is an SEAI supported fully managed upgrade of multiple elements of a house. We look after the entire process including claiming the grant support from SEAI and also leverage the recently announced €500m low rate energy upgrade loans that have came from EU funds. We take a fabric first approach to all home and buildings energy upgrades, which means we look at the project in its entirety and ensure that the structural renovations and insulation are suitable for renewable installations such as heatpumps and will deliver a warm, comfortable home or building that will be energy efficient and save money to run and less CO2 to our climate. MSM Renewables look after the ongoing maintenance and servicing of renewable energy appliances including Heat Pumps, Solar and Mechanical ventilation. This is essential to ensure the systems are performing to optimum standards and maximum energy efficiency thus leading to less running costs and also harm to the environment.
Q5) Do you believe Chamber membership has been important to your business?
Kildare Chamber has been a valuable support to me and my business over the years. It has given us a platform to promote our business and promote the benefits of renewable energy technology to other business’s and home owners in the area via the prestigious Kildare Chamber Awards, business luncheons and many more great events they organise on the members behalf. Being on the Chamber committee for some years previous to this allowed us to become more involved in the community and build up a solid network of supporters and friends over the years, which we would engage with and use for external needs of our business’s such as website building and upgrade, marketing, printing and much more.
I would encourage all businesses within Kildare, be it a sole trader, large corporate or anywhere in between to get involved and become a member with the Kildare Chamber sooner rather than later, as it’s value to business’s in key no matter what industry you are involved in.

AMC recently celebrated a 25 year & 20 anniversary for long time members of staff – Marino Bustamante & Tadas Tonkunas.
Marino has been with AMC since 1999 and is known in the industry for his exceptional packing and export packing skills. These skills are invaluable to a moving company like AMC. Tadas became part of the team in 2004 and is now part of the dedicated European team.
AMC’s sales, operations and team of move co-ordinators bring over 20 years experience in the removal industry which ensures they are on hand to help clients of all kinds with their moves. Our team handle the move from start to finish with exceptional knowledge of all areas of the removal industry along with international experience in terms of customs procedures and legislation.
2024 will also see the celebration of another 2 anniversaries for our office crew. Operations Manager Kayleigh who joined the team in 2014 and Overseas Manager Brenda who celebrates her sixth year in the removal industry.
AMC pride themselves on its low staff turnover and being a good place to work for all. AMC offer all staff the opportunity to up skill and develop their skills in the industry along with personal development.
2024 has seen AMC bring “Naas Self Storage” to its campus. It has enabled

AMC to grow within the Storage sector of the moving industry with the opening of their brand new Self Storage facility in their premises in Naas Industrial Estate. Having offered standard crate storage to clients since 2002, management at AMC has overseen a gap in the Kildare market for a self - storage facility. The first phase of the self storage facility opened in February 2024 which offers units of all sizes to suit individual needs from 15 square foot to 85 square foot. Since opening in February 2024, the demand for self storage by locals has seen great demand as clients are able to access their stored items 24/7 without the need to make an appointment. The fully secure self storage unit offers clients access with personal access door code, alarms, CCTV and 24/7 camera monitoring.
CSR is very important to Aubrey and his team and has lead him to set up “Tiglin” which is a charity reaching out to the most vulnerable feeding over 500 every day. Recently Aubrey has been awarded the “Trinity College Alumni Award”, “Rehab person of the year” and a few weeks ago the “Red Cross Humanitarian for of the year”.
AMC are proud members of County Kildare Chamber and are on course for a bright future and with the focus on providing a quality moving service while also giving something back to the community - it looks like a “Win Win situation” !
Our team are on hand at all times to assist with all moving and storage needs and can be reached on 045874498 or info@ amcremovals.ie

Irish Equine Centre, Johnstown Naas
We are a veterinary diagnostic laboratory in the heart of Kildare. We were established over 40 years ago to serve the thoroughbred industry and horses are still our primary species, but we conduct tests for all animals. We currently employ 68 staff most of whom are scientists and vets and generally everyone is an animal lover! Our focus in on providing quality testing and disease surveillance underpinned by a practical, friendly service ethic. We have five different laboratories - microbiology, virology, clinical pathology (biochemistry and haematology), pathology and environment and nutrition.
We are designated a World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reference laboratory for two diseases. We are one of only three reference laboratories in the world for equine influenza and one of two for equine herpesvirus. The other WOAH reference laboratories for these equine diseases are in the Gluck Equine Research Center in Kentucky and the Japan Racing Association Equine Research Institute.
The work day and year is varied as different seasons bring different challenges as well as some standardised testing and ongoing commercial contracts. At the moment we are in the midst of the equine breeding season and all thoroughbreds require testing in advance of being mated so it’s a busy time which is fantastic.
As you know sustainability and the environment are high on everyone’s agenda and our Environment and Nutrition lab works with equine farms,

racing and competition yards to help them in their endeavours to be lighter on the land. We have seen brilliant results such as:
• Enhanced fertiliser efficiency and reduced fertiliser use
• Enhanced agroecology at farm level
• Improved animal health and well-being through a holistic approach
• Reduction in the overuse of pharmaceutical medication and chemical products
• Reduction in veterinary intervention
• Increase in forage and feed quality
• Improvement in drinking water quality for human and animal
• Up to 20% more grass growth
• Up to 50% reduction in fertiliser use
• Increase in appropriate organic manure use
• 25% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is calculated from reduced fertiliser use and increased composting efficiency
For those of you who don’t own horses we offer faecal egg testing for worms for all species from alpacas to zebras! We strongly advocate educating owners to test ahead of treating to help reduce helminthic resistance and ensure effective treatment when indicated.
Our microbiology lab developed a bespoke probiotic which a totally unique product. ProSol is a probiotic solution which contains live beneficial bacteria harvested from the horse’s or dog’s own faecal sample. Each unit of ProSol is made specifically for each horse or dog making it an exclusive and novel product.
Probiotics are the superheroes of the bacterial world! Beneficial bacteria in your horses and dog’s gut work vigorously to help digest food, fend off harmful bacteria, and boost a healthy immune system. Our strapline is ProSol – a balanced gut a better life.

Mount Charles

It all started with our Chairman, Trevor Annon’s vision. With years of experience in contract catering, Trevor was determined to develop services to compete with those of multinational facility management organisations while upholding the values of a locally-owned business. Since 1988, he has guided the company to become one of the largest employers in Northern Ireland, with a growing presence in Ireland in catering, cleaning, vending, and events.
Operating exclusively on the island of Ireland, Mount Charles Group offers comprehensive support services to sectors including industry, commerce, education, healthcare, vending, events, and banqueting. Despite our growth, our family-oriented, hands-on approach and commitment to local communities and products have remained constant. This way of conducting business defines us and is a source of immense pride for our team.

Breakthrough Cancer Research

Our Charitable Purpose is the raising and application of money and other resources for the purpose of education, and research and development, in the field of cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Breakthrough funds cancer research that responds to current clinical challenges and offers a clear and demonstrable path to positive clinical outcomes. Research programmes funded by Breakthrough must focus on translating lab discoveries into new treatment opportunities. To this end we work closely with clinicians in practice all over Ireland so that our research is targeted at finding new options for poor prognosis and currently incurable cancers.
We are clinically focused, bringing the best and brightest together to tackle this disease. Our funded scientists work directly with surgeons and physicians in practice so we can find new treatments for the most challenging cases.
Monies raised through Breakthrough fundraising activities are used to support focused research programmes, directly fund scientists and purchase laboratory consumables. Investment is intended to also enhance facilities with state-of-the-art equipment and ensure that all cancer patients throughout Ireland have the opportunity to access the most up to date and effective treatment for their disease. Consultant physicians and surgeons collaborate with us across Ireland and do so at no cost to our charity, giving their time to our research voluntarily with the aim of improving the care and treatment of Irish patients. There is hope and that hope is in research!
