Earlier this year T.P. Waters, your Mazda, Jeep, Fiat & Fiat Professional main Dealers in Kildare town embarked on the epic task of installing 92 solar panels on the dealership roof. So, while big changes were happening in the showroom, announcing our new brands to the market even bigger things have been happening on our roof.
We are making a bold investment in the future so, making that crucial step to reduce our carbon footprint and combat climate change with the comfort of knowing that while we work, they work. It comes at a great time just before we launched our new range of Electric and PHEV brands to the market.
And with this recent sunny spell they have been working hard to ensure that we contribute to a sustainable future, reducing our environmental footprint and reducing the cost and reliance on traditional power sources, aiding the beautiful environment around us. Over its lifetime the panels will be the equivalent of planting 2085 trees, avoiding 232 long haul flights and 324,276 kilometres in car journeys.
Thanks to the guys at Rosehill Renewables for their guidance and work with this project.
Chamber member and Photographer Brendan Duffy from Kildare was recently selected as a finalist in the Association of Photographer’s (AOP) Open Awards. Brendan’s series of 5 images entitled “Easter Sunday, Ibiza” depicts the Procession de Santa Semana in the town of Santa Eulalia in Ibiza, where local women wearing lace head dresses accompany statues of Jesus and Mary to the local church to celebrate Easter Sunday mass, a tradition dating back centuries.
The Association of Photographers was originally set up in 1968 and their Photography and Open Awards celebrate professional excellence in the creative photography and image-making industry. It is Brendan’s fourth time to be selected for the AOP Awards and he looks forward to hopefully bringing home a Silver or Gold award on this occasion. The awards ceremony takes place in London on October 9th.”

with Minister James Lawless
Q1) You’ve served the people of North Kildare for nearly a decade now. How has your approach to politics evolved during that time- and what motivates you most in public life today? What does it mean to you to now represent the region as a Minister in Government?
Over the years, I’ve gained valuable experience, built strong connections, and developed a deep understanding of both the people and the constituency I represent, what drives them, what matters to them, and how best to serve their interests.
One key way my approach has evolved is in recognising that you simply can't please all the people all the time. I learned early on that there will always be differing opinions, and sometimes even opposition, and you just have to make the right call and move forward with it . But I’ve always remained focused on doing my best for the public and staying true to the needs of my constituency.
Having now contested three general elections, and topping the poll in the most recent one, I feel that my approach resonates and I feel humbled to serve this great constituency.
As a first-time Cabinet Minister, I’ve felt a real energy in the room. My colleagues are equally ambitious, not just for their constituencies, but for the country as a whole. There’s a shared determination to be a Government that delivers, and I’m excited to be part of that momentum.
Having Cabinet representation in Kildare means we have a voice at the top table, without that representation, there is a risk that we could fall between two stools, neither country nor city. With both Martin and myself at the table, we ensure that Kildare and the wider commuter belt region are front and centre at the top table of Government.
Q2) Minister, you've recently taken on the role of Minister for Higher Education. What are your top priorities in this portfolio, particularly as they relate to regional access and skills development?
It’s a real privilege to be leading a department that is central to shaping Ireland’s future. As Minister for Further and Higher Education, I see my Department as an economic one, because in today’s world, skills are currency, and research and innovation are the engines of growth.
One of my top priorities is ensuring that every region in Ireland has access to high-quality education and training opportunities. I’ve taken a number of key steps to support this. We’re continuing to invest in new pathways by funding additional permanent places and new courses in higher education, while also expanding options outside the CAO system, such as apprenticeships, further education courses, and new tertiary degree programmes.
Since the formation of my Department, investment in apprenticeship training has increased by 84%, rising from €184 million in 2020 to €339 million in 2025. This reflects our commitment to building a more inclusive, flexible, and future-focused education system that works for learners in every part of the country.
Most recently, I allocated over €4.5 million of funding through the Reach Fund, which will support 700 local community education groups. This funding will help learners build skills, support personal development, and access simplified pathways into further education and training (FET), with opportunities to progress even further.
I firmly believe that Ireland’s future competitiveness depends on a highly skilled workforce. That’s why we’re investing in apprenticeships, lifelong learning, and flexible pathways that meet the needs of both learners and employers.
In a rapidly changing global landscape, we can no longer rely solely on foreign direct investment. We must look beyond globalisation and build a more resilient, self-sustaining economy. That starts with investing in our own talent, because our people are our greatest natural resource.
That’s why I’m focused on empowering learners, supporting researchers, and ensuring that Ireland remains a global leader in knowledge, creativity, and innovation.
Q3) Businesses in Kildare regularly highlight the need for work-ready graduates, especially in tech, manufacturing, and logistics. What initiatives are underway to better align course offerings with evolving industry needs?
As I’ve said before, I firmly believe that Ireland’s future competitiveness depends on a highly skilled workforce. One of my top priorities is ensuring that every region, including Kildare, has access to high-quality education and training opportunities that are aligned with the needs of local industry. The goal is to ensure we have the skills not just to meet today’s challenges, but to anticipate the demands of the future.
To better align education with industry needs, we’re strengthening the system’s ability to gather and use labour market data. This was a key recommendation of the OECD Skills Strategy Review in 2023. Through the nine Regional Skills Fora and the reformed National Skills Council, we’re bringing together insights from employers, educators, and social partners to inform policy and programme development.
We’re also taking a sector-specific approach. For example, my Department and I are developing a 'Technology Skills of the Future Roadmap', a strategic plan informed by research from the ESRI and the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs. This will help us forecast demand and identify the digital and emerging tech skills required, including in areas like AI. Industry will be directly consulted as part of this work.
Crucially, employers are increasingly involved in shaping course content, whether through local providers, the Regional Skills Fora, or national initiatives. A recent example is SOLAS working with Enterprise Ireland clients to develop new bite-sized qualifications in AI, with course delivery starting soon.
All of this reflects our commitment to building a responsive, agile education and training system, one that ensures graduates in Kildare and across Ireland are work-ready and equipped for the evolving demands of sectors like tech, manufacturing, and logistics.
Q4) Maynooth University is a major asset for Kildare. Are there any upcoming developments or supports earmarked for the university or for the broader third-level sector in the region?
Maynooth University is a cornerstone of the third-level landscape in Kildare and a vital part of our national higher education system. Just last week, I had the pleasure of visiting the campus to officially open Teach Uí Bhuachalla, a new, purpose-built 116-bed student accommodation located just minutes from the university.
This is the first project delivered under our €100 million Short-Term Activation Programme, announced in April 2024. Importantly, 30% of the beds are reserved for students from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds, ensuring that access to high-quality housing supports equity and inclusion. Developments like this allow students to focus on their studies, build connections, and fully participate in university life.
I also warmly welcome the establishment of Maynooth University’s new School of Nursing, which will offer 30 places in its inaugural year (2025), with plans to expand to 100 places annually, half of which will be available through non-CAO routes. This initiative not only opens up new pathways for students locally and nationally but also contributes to the broader expansion of healthcare education across the country. It reflects our shared commitment to meeting workforce needs and strengthening the third-level sector in the region.
In addition, Maynooth University is progressing a strategic alignment with Dundalk Institute of Technology. Earlier this year, I attended the launch of a new Regional Research Graduate Academy, which supports the joint registration and training of postgraduate research students between the two institutions. This collaboration is a strong example of how regional partnerships can enhance research capacity, drive innovation, and deliver real benefits for both learners and industry.
All of this reflects the scale, ambition, and momentum behind Maynooth University’s development, and more broadly, the exciting progress underway across Kildare and the wider region.
Q5) From Celbridge to Clane, Leixlip to Maynooth — North Kildare is one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing regions in the country. What are the key challenges you're hearing on the ground, and how are you working to address them at national level?
North Kildare is one of the most dynamic and fastest-growing regions in the country, and with that growth comes real opportunity, but also real challenges. On the ground, the issues I hear most often are around housing, infrastructure, and the need to support local enterprise.
Housing is a top concern. We need to ensure that enough land is zoned for development and that housing supply keeps pace with population growth. That’s why I’m working closely with colleagues across Government to accelerate delivery and ensure that planning and zoning decisions reflect the needs of growing communities like Naas, Sallins, Clane, Leixlip and Maynooth. The local authorities have to play their part too and in our case Kildare County Council has to ensure large quantities of land are rezoned to enable massive delivery of the much needed housing for our people
But housing alone isn’t enough, we also need to match that growth with services. That includes schools, healthcare, and community infrastructure, so that North Kildare is a great place to live, work, and enjoy for everyone.
Transport is another key issue. Projects like DART+ are essential to improving commuter services and reducing congestion. I’m continuing to advocate for investment in public transport that meets the needs of a growing population and supports sustainable development. And finally, we must continue to support the vibrant enterprise base in North Kildare. This region is home to some of Ireland’s most innovative companies, particularly in tech, pharma, and advanced manufacturing. At national level, I’m committed to ensuring that North Kildare remains a centrepiece of our economic strategy, through skills development, infrastructure investment, and strong regional planning.

The workplace is in the midst of a profound transformation. Once defined by desks, filing cabinets, and watercooler conversations, today’s offices are evolving into dynamic hubs that balance flexibility, technology, and human connection. This shift is not simply aesthetic; it reflects deeper changes in how people work, what they expect from their employers, and how organizations prepare for the future.
Forward-thinking companies now face a critical question: What should the office of the future look like?
The rise of hybrid and remote work has redefined the role of the physical office. No longer the default setting for day-to-day tasks, offices are being redesigned to serve a new purpose — as collaboration and connection spaces. Employees might complete focused work at home, but they come to the office to brainstorm, build culture, and innovate together.
This means traditional desk rows are giving way to adaptable layouts, where quiet pods exist alongside open brainstorming zones. Hot-desking and shared areas encourage flexibility, while dedicated team spaces help retain a sense of identity. The future office is not static — it must flex and evolve with shifting patterns of work.
Future-ready offices prioritize the human experience. Employees increasingly want workplaces that reflect the comfort, balance, and autonomy they enjoy at home. This has fuelled the rise of resimercial design — blending residential warmth with commercial functionality. Soft furnishings, natural materials, greenery, and wellness amenities are becoming staples of modern office design. Beyond comfort, health and well-being are paramount. Biophilic elements, natural light, and ergonomic furniture support physical health, while quiet zones and mindfulness spaces nurture mental well-being. In many ways, the office of tomorrow is not just a place to work but a space to feel good while working.
Digital tools are no longer optional — they are the backbone of the future office. Seamless integration of cloud systems, high-speed connectivity, and intuitive collaboration platforms is vital for hybrid work to succeed. Meeting rooms are increasingly fitted with smart conferencing tools that put remote workers on equal footing with those in the room.
Emerging technologies also hold promise. Artificial intelligence can streamline workflows and personalize office experiences, while augmented and virtual reality could transform training, design, and collaboration. However, organizations must balance innovation with inclusivity — ensuring technology empowers employees rather than overwhelms them.
As businesses embrace environmental responsibility, sustainable design is becoming central to future-ready offices. From energyefficient lighting to recycled materials and modular furniture, eco-conscious choices are shaping the physical environment. Offices are also being designed with longevity and adaptability in mind, reducing the need for costly and wasteful refurbishments every few years.
Equally important is creating workplaces with a sense of purpose. Younger generations, in particular, want to feel aligned with their employer’s values. The office of the future must therefore embody inclusivity, sustainability, and community, signaling that the workplace is more than a business hub — it is a reflection of shared culture and goals.
While the opportunities are exciting, challenges remain. Striking the right balance
between flexibility and accountability is difficult. Ensuring equity between in-office and remote staff requires intentional design — both digital and physical. And as workplaces become increasingly reliant on technology, cybersecurity and data privacy will demand constant vigilance.
Financial pressures also play a role. Not every company can invest heavily in redesigning its spaces, which means finding scalable, costeffective solutions will be essential.
The Office as an Ecosystem
Ultimately, the future office is less about a single design trend and more about creating ecosystems that adapt to changing needs It is a blend of comfort and professionalism, digital and physical, personal and communal. By designing offices that anticipate tomorrow’s challenges, organizations can build spaces that not only support productivity but also inspire, connect, and care for the people within them.
The workplace of the future is not just where we do our jobs — it’s where culture is built, innovation thrives, and people feel they belong. In that sense, designing for the future is not just about shaping offices. It’s about shaping the future of work itself.

According to independent research conducted on behalf of Close Brothers Commercial Finance, many Irish businesses are optimistic about the future, with almost half of those reporting that they expect their company to expand over the coming 12 months, and over 70% indicating that they plan to seek funding for investment in that period.
However, the same study shows that many companies are not familiar with all the finance options available to them, which leaves some missing out on the funding solutions most appropriate for their needs.
Invoice finance allows businesses to unlock cash from their outstanding invoices, improving cash flow and managing working capital. There are two types: factoring and discounting, where the former gives the invoice finance provider credit control responsibilities and the latter means you manage chasing payment from customers within the business, making it completely confidential.
Invoice finance can also be combined with asset finance, releasing cash from equipment, for an asset based lending solution, unlocking greater amounts of capital for strategic events such as a management buy-out or acquisition.
This flexibility of this type of funding means it can be used for companies experiencing rapid growth, seasonal fluctuations, long payment terms or succession planning providing immediate access to funds and will grow with your business. Asset finance
Beyond traditional funding options, asset finance can be instrumental in helping SMEs to survive and thrive. At Close Brothers, we offer a range of solutions, including hire purchase, refinance and financial lease. These products enable businesses to spread the cost of, for example, new machinery or to release money from existing assets, making funding available for day-to-day tasks while freeing up additional capital to invest in their business.
Refinancing solutions
Refinancing can help asset-rich SMEs access the equity tied up
in their equipment while continuing to use it for daily work. It’s a quick and simple way to get extra money for your business needs. The asset is valued, purchased from the owner, and then financed back. Ownership is retained at the end of the repayment period regardless of whether the equipment is originally owned by the buyer or if another finance agreement needs restructuring, Unlike traditional bank loans and overdrafts, the lending is secured against the value of the assets, making it more secure and sustainable.
Sustainability takes centre stage
With sustainability no longer just a buzzword for Irish SMEs, many firms now actively support sustainable practices and are seeking ways to invest in a future powered by renewable energy through strategic financial tools like asset finance. This enables them to access new technology and equipment without high upfront expenditure and with the flexibility to spread the cost of an asset over a fixed period that suits them.
Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme
Close Brothers Commercial Finance has partnered with the SBCI to provide the Growth and Sustainability Loan Scheme, which provides SMEs with long term finance to invest in climate action and environmental stability measures that are designed to improve their performance. This benefits from a guarantee provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB) Group, with support from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM).
Kenneth Havelin, Close Brothers Commercial Finance Sales Director, Leinster, said:
“Irish SMEs are ambitious and forward-thinking, but many still aren’t aware of the full range of funding options available to them. At Close Brothers, we’re committed to bridging that gap, offering tailored solutions like asset finance and refinance that empower businesses to invest in growth and sustainability.
“Whether it’s upgrading equipment, unlocking working capital, or supporting green initiatives, our goal is to help firms access the right finance at the right time.”

Really Good Food is especially important to the Hotel and its food philosophy commits to quality supply and produce with continual focus on seasonal, artisan, local and Irish sourced ingredients. Variety is key and there are classic, traditional, modern, healthy, and plant-based dishes all wrapped up in its menu choices. The Travellers’ Choice Awards Best of the Best title celebrates the highest level of excellence in travel. It’s awarded to those who receive a high volume of above-and-beyond reviews and opinions from the Tripadvisor community over a 12-month period. Out of our 8 million listings, fewer than 1% achieve this milestone.'

• Kildare’s Minister Heydon Marks Anniversary Milestone at Event in Company Head Office
• O’Brien Fine Foods Now Employs Over 500 People in Timahoe and Rathowen
• Business Contributes Tens of Millions to Local Kildare Economy
June 25th, 2025 - O’Brien Fine Foods celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Martin Heydon TD as guest of honour. Jim O’Toole, CEO, Bord Bia, Mark Christal, Manager Food, Sustainability & Climate Change, Enterprise Ireland and members of Kildare County Council and Kildare Chamber also attended the celebration at O’Brien Fine Foods’ headquarters in Timahoe, Co Kildare.
O’Brien Fine Foods has grown exponentially since it was established in 2000 with a team of just 18. Specialising in the manufacture and marketing of premium meats, the company produces high-quality value-added ham, chicken and turkey products at four processing facilities in the UK and Ireland, supplying four of the top five grocery retailers in Ireland, as well as convenience and independent retail customers. Today, the Kildare company employs a total of 635 people in Ireland and the UK. Underlining its commitment as an employer to the Kildare community, 383 of these roles are based in Timahoe, Co. Kildare with a further 161 in Rathowen, Co. Westmeath. O’Brien Fine Foods also has a major financial footprint in the Kildare region, contributing tens of millions annually to the local economy through indirect employment and supplier contracts. 75% of the company’s investment in meat, packaging and ingredients is invested with Irish-owned businesses. Reflecting its deep roots in the community, O’Brien Fine Foods has a long-standing relationship with Gaelic games in Kildare through Brady Family’s sponsorship of Kildare GAA, LGFA and Camogie, a connection that stretches back over 12 years. The company also works with children’s charity Barretstown, food waste initiative Foodcloud and has a school partnership with Ard Scoil Rath Iomgháin through Business in the Community.
With a focus on innovation while staying true to its traditional roots, O’Brien Fine Foods is a B Corp-certified, market leader in cooked meats – and over the years, Brady Family has grown to become one of the top 20 names in Irish grocery and Ireland’s No. 1 cooked meats brand, having become the first ham brand in Ireland to receive Bord Bia’s highly sought after Quality Assurance mark back in 2006.
Speaking at the event, Minister for Agriculture Martin Heydon TD said: “O’Brien Fine Foods represents the best of Irish enterprise – a homegrown company that has grown from modest beginnings to become a leading player in the food sector. Their focus on local sourcing, sustainability and innovation is a model for what Irish food businesses can aspire to. It is a pleasure to mark this 25-year milestone alongside the O’Brien family and their team. Their success story is a testament to what can be achieved when deep community roots and strong business vision come together.”
Jim O’Toole, CEO, Bord Bia said: “I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the entire team at O’Brien Fine Foods – their passion and hard work have been instrumental in achieving this remarkable 25-year journey. As a member of Origin Green, O’Brien Fine Foods exemplifies the quality of Irish food brands both domestically and internationally. This milestone reflects not only their commitment to building and growing a sustainable business, but also their dedication to showcasing Irish produce to the world.”
John O’Brien, Managing Director, O’Brien Fine Foods, commented: “Reaching 25 years in business is a proud moment for all of us at O’Brien Fine Foods. From our beginnings with just 18 people to today’s team of over 600 across Ireland and the UK, our growth has been driven by a belief in quality, innovation and community. We’ve always stayed close to our roots in Kildare, investing in our people and supporting the local economy. I want to sincerely thank Minister Heydon for joining us today, and acknowledge the hard work, loyalty and passion of our colleagues – they are the reason we are celebrating this milestone today.”
There’s a moment, just before I press the shutter, when everything lines up: light, space, emotion, and the unspoken story your business wants to tell. For over 15 years I’ve been creating these moments for clients of all types—hotels and heritage venues, start-ups and multinationals, restaurants and national institutions. Whatever the sector, my goal is the same: images that make people stop, look closer and see more.
I’m Tadhg Nathan, LIPPVA-accredited commercial, architectural and social photographer based in County Kildare. You might have seen my work in Johnstown Estate’s recent marketing campaigns (see photo) or the fabulous cabins at Ballygarry Estate (see photo). I was a finalist for Commercial & Architectural Photographer of the Year, but accolades matter less to me than the quiet vote of confidence that comes when a client says, “That’s exactly how we want the world to feel about us.”
A consultative approach—from brainstorm to billboard
Great photography doesn’t start with a camera; it starts with a conversation. Whether you’re a marketing director armed with a detailed brief or a family-run restaurant that simply knows “we need better photos,” our first job is to tease out the story you want to tell. We’ll chat through your brand values, target audiences and what success looks like for you. We then build a tailored shoot plan—covering styling, timings, props and who does what—so, come shoot day, you can relax and feel confident, concentrating on what matters—your brand narrative.
Shoot day itself is where craft meets collaboration. I favour natural, atmospheric light as much as possible because it feels real; viewers instinctively trust what hasn’t been over-lit or over-posed. That philosophy extends to people too. Whether I’m photographing a CEO for a profile piece or chefs plating the hero dish, I work quietly in the background, letting personalities shine. The result is honest storytelling that connects.
Delivery you can deploy tomorrow
Turnaround matters in today’s “post it yesterday” world. After carefully curating and processing the strongest frames, I deliver a suite of high-resolution photos ready for every platform—website hero images, Instagram, brochures, even the side of a bus if you fancy. Clients repeatedly tell me that having a coherent, on-brand image bank cuts design time and keeps their marketing looking fresh throughout the year.
Why
• Versatility: From six-figure hotel refits to agile shoots in a small space, I bring the same care and technical rigour.
• Accredited & Insured: As a Licentiate of the Irish Professional Photographers & Videographers Association I adhere to the highest professional standards.
• Kildare-based, Ireland-wide: I’m proud to champion local enterprise, yet my kit—and passport—are always packed for national and overseas projects.
• People first: Clients describe me as “easy-going but exacting.” Translation? The shoot is enjoyable, the files are flawless.
Let’s make images you’re proud to share
If your 2025 marketing plan includes upping the visual ante, let’s talk. A ten-minute discovery call is often all it takes to spark an idea that turns into revenue-generating imagery.
