Dr Dan Poulter MP Just before the Covid pandemic struck, a young woman who introduced herself as a vegan angrily demanded of me why the Government was not taking action to ban meat and dairy products.

Veganism has now penetrated the mainstream and it's easy to forget that barely a decade ago, it was a fringe movement. I welcome the fact that this has changed, but let's get one thing straight. It's entirely natural for humans to eat meat. As a species, we evolved eating meat.

We have eaten meat for millions of years.

When I questioned the young woman about her reasons for wanting to put so many farmers out of business, she explained that meat and dairy farming was a major cause of carbon and greenhouse gas emissions and for environmental reasons it should be banned. However, this argument ignores the fact that the carbon footprint (food miles) of transporting vegan staples like rice and quinoa to the UK, are far from unproblematic in climate terms. In fact, the climate footprint of rice is comparable to that of international aviation.

Locally sourced food, be it meat or vegetables, has the benefit of almost no food miles. Locally sourced meat has a lower carbon footprint than rice imported from overseas. Suffolk's meat and dairy herds turn something we cannot eat (grass) into something we can (meat and dairy). They help to recycle fertility and make use of land that cannot easily grow crops.

The label often given to red meat as being an unhealthy food has become a dietary dogma, but research reveals a more complex picture. The association between red meat and negative health outcomes has been more commonly observed in studies where people are eating a highly processed diet, while studies of healthy omnivores eating a diet rich in plant foods have failed to find consistent evidence that red meat is unhealthy. The contribution of red meat to our diet is further complicated by the fact that not all meat is produced equally. Different farming systems, which provide animals with very different lives produce meat and dairy of varying quality.

In that respect, we should be happy

to eat and consume meat and dairy produced by our Suffolk farmers as part of a healthy and balanced diet which contains vegetables.

As an NHS doctor, I have reservations about imposing strict vegan diets, particularly upon infants due to risks of malnutrition. Vitamin B12 is most often obtained from animal foods and higher rates of deficiency have been found in vegans compared with other vegetarians and meat eaters. Maintaining adequate intake of B12 which helps make red blood cells and keep the nervous system healthy is a common challenge for vegans as it is not found in plant based foods.

Many other essential vitamins and minerals including vitamins B2, niacin, vitamin D, iodine, zinc, potassium and selenium are also typically lower for vegans.

I will always support people making an informed choice about what they choose to put into their own bodies. Veganism is fine by me. But those who want to ban meat and dairy and put hundreds of farmers and food businesses in Suffolk out of business should think again.

Halesworth Repair Cafe

If you haven’t already been, you must pop down and see Halesworth Community Larder.

If you have food or staple goods that you cannot use, you can swop those for items that you really want or need. And if things are a bit of a struggle, we have fresh veg and fruit and lots of tins to help you ensure that you and your family can eat well during the week. We also have a supply of nappies and lots of cleaning goods too.

Our Larder relies on the very generous donations from local people and the many shops and local businesses that support us.

Paddy Flegg Paddy Flegg, District Councillor, Town Councillor, School Governor, HVC Chair, Charity Trustee and friend to so many people died in March.

Our current Chair Karen Austin has written the following tribute.

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the death of Paddy Flegg, our former Chair and Trustee.

Paddy was the charity’s

longest serving Trustee, her tenure spanning over three decades. As Chair she guided and supported the charity for over twelve of those years.

During this time HVC expanded significantly, and became a key provider of volunteer led community support in the area.

Many of the services we value today, including community transport and befriending, were developed by Paddy and her team and her strong leadership laid the foundations for the sustainable organisation we are today.

After retiring from HVC in 2013, she maintained a keen interest in our activities whilst also serving the Halesworth Dementia Carers Fund. In 2019 we were delighted to recognize her as one of our first Community Champions, in recognition of her outstanding and enduring contribution to our organisation.

Our thoughts of with Paddy’s family and many friends at this difficult time.

Thank you to all of you who popped into our office to wish Happy Birthday (and it was a big one) to our wonderful colleague Karen Kerridge. HVC was able to give Karen a small gift too.

We are delighted to announce that on the 1st April, Karen became our Deputy Director in recognition of her amazing contribution to HVC. And very touchingly, it was Paddy Flegg who interviewed Karen for her new job at HVC over 17 years ago. We have so, so much to thank Paddy for.

Wenhaston Flower Club Our meeting on 5th of April was very well attended and we were delighted to welcome Lizzie Woolnough to flower club. Lizzie's workshop on how to make an Easter table centre piece without the use of florist foam was great fun and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

The arrangements produced were beautiful.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 3rd May at 7:30pm in Wenhaston Village Hall.

We are delighted to welcome Jane Bastow to the flower club.

Jane is a local flower gardener with a wealth of knowledge and experience.

As we look forward to the warmer days and time in the garden Jane's demonstration is entitled "Preparing For Summer". This will be a flower demonstration with a difference.

plants to keep them flowering all summer and which plants grow best together, she will also be demonstrating how to pot up two different types of hanging baskets.

Halesworth Community Larder

Beccles and District Museum at Leman House, Ballygate, Beccles, has opened for its 2022 season with a special exhibition - a display of samplers and sewing entitled ‘Life Stories in Stitches’. The skill and determination shown by the children whose work is on display are impressive. Eightyear old Louisa Anne Rockhill, for example, delicately stitched an elaborate sampler which is dated 1837.

Pam Finch, who looks after the Museum’s textile collection and who has prepared the exhibition, has also provided interesting background information about samplers.

Middleton Open Gardens are given to other causes, and this year the chosen charity is The Blossom Appeal to support a new breast cancer treatment unit for Colchester and Ipswich Hospitals.

In addition to the fundraising aspect, the community works hard like a well oiled machine in ensuring that visitors have an enjoyable time in sharing our beautiful village.

There are 14 gardens this year, from formal to a wildlife reserve, and all in between.

Gardens varying in size from a patio, to over 5 acres. Many of the gardeners are very knowledgeable, and are willing to share tips. But if you just want to sit and relax, and enjoy the gardens that’s fine too. Visitors have been known to snooze in the sunshine!

there will be directions from main routes. Tickets, which are £5 for adults ( children free) will be on sale there, and programmes and maps will be available.

Refreshments will be available all day at the Recreation Ground, and also cream teas at the Village Hall in the afternoons.

Dogs are welcome in most gardens with owners consent, but always on a lead please.

Most of the gardens are close to the centre of the village, and within easy walking distance of each other.

Three of the gardens are on Middleton Moor just outside the main village. They are well worth seeing, but most visitors would want to drive there separately, and parking will be available on the Moor.

We are pleased to have a new garden this year in Fen Street, which I am assured is of a very high standard. Access to this garden from the village is however via some uneven

May is the month when everything gets busy in the garden and even the most relaxed of gardeners become inspired.

Plant growth is steaming ahead with seeds germinating, plants and shrubs bursting into flower and annual weeds popping up.

It’s also a time to think about introducing some edible plants into your garden and there are plenty of easy ways to enjoy fullflavoured crops, even when space is tight.

For novice gardeners, focus on herbs. It doesn’t take long to grow herbs from seed, and if you get sowing now then you will have them to enjoy throughout the summer. Parsley, coriander and dill can all be sown direct in the soil this month and you will be able to harvest them from July onwards. Basil is best sown indoors in pots, but again you will be able to take your pick of its leaves from July.

If you have a semi-shaded spot in your garden you could try growing a selection of cut-andcome-again salad leaves. Not only delicious to eat, they will save you having to buy bags of salad from the supermarket – which means you will also be cutting down on plastic packaging. If you are going to grow them in a container pick one that is approximately 30cm

wide or larger. Try mizuna looseleaved lettuce, rocket or endive.

You can also sow pak choi, Swiss chard and beetroot to harvest their colourful, tasty leaves. Once the salad leaves are 10cm tall – which will be in about three to four weeks – snip them off with scissors to just above ground level and they will re-sprout for a second or third time. If you give them some liquid plant food after each harvest they will re-grow more rapidly.

Dwarf French Beans is the veg that keeps on giving during the summer months. As long as you pick them as soon as they are ready they will keep on cropping all summer long. They need good fertile soil, so make sure you dig in some compost, and climbing varieties need canes for support.

Young plants can be planted out end of May or you can sow seeds now directly into the soil where you want them to grow, at 20cm intervals. Water the soil when it gets dry and if you sow a second batch next month you can alternate picking beans between the two all summer.

If you’re new to growing vegetables, beetroot is a good, easy-to-grow option. The seeds don’t need much encouragement to germinate and they require little maintenance once established.

If you want carrots with plenty of flavour, it’s definitely worth growing your own. Both beetroot and carrot seeds tend to germinate within a couple of weeks and you should be harvesting fresh beetroot in 8-10 weeks and carrots in 14-16 weeks.

Finally, for a touch of colour try some edible flowers - they can be grown from seed and are easy to sow. Nasturtiums seeds are simply pushed straight into soil in spring or summer and the flowers taste a touch peppery.

Pot Marigolds are also sown at this time of year and their orange flowers have a zingy citrus flavour.

As the RHS says … as bulbs fade and herbaceous borders grow in leaps and bounds, it is now clear that summer is approaching.

Sowing and planting out bedding can begin, depending on regional weather variations, and you can take softwood cuttings. It's also time to get back into the lawn mowing regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer temperatures this month brings. Top three jobs this month – watch out for late frosts and protect tender plants, earth up potatoes and plant any that you might still have and plant out summer bedding at the end of the month (except in cold areas).

Aldeburgh Music Club

The Red House, Aldeburgh is a beautiful example of the preservation of local history.

It celebrates the lives of Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears who lived here between 1957 and 1986. Their tale is a love story in a time when same sex relationships were illegal.

Their input into the local area led to the concert hall at Snape Maltings being established and has inspired and supported many into prosperous creative arts careers.

To visit Aldeburgh and not attend would in my mind, be an injustice to yourself. With a variety of musical events at

Quiz night fun with ABC Radio Quiz fans will need their thinking caps on in June, when Alde and Blyth Community Radio celebrates their first anniversary by holding a fun Quiz Night, to help raise funds towards their ambitious plans to introduce a second studio and enable outside broadcasts.

Many of the station's presenters will be on hand to host the 10 rounds of questions and as you would expect, questions will include various music based rounds, but not as you may anticipate, plus a host of other topics too, including film, television and general knowledge.

The aim of the event is to have fun and there will be prize for the top scoring team and a 'booby prize' for the lowest scoring table!

Alde and Blyth Community Radio was founded in April 2021, serving the 'coastal corridor' between Orford and Southwold and currently broadcasts every weekend from 17:00-23:00, Saturdays from 08:00-23:00 and Sunday's from 08:00-23:00.

You can find ABC Radio online at: www.abcradio.co.uk, via the new ABC Radio app and by asking Alexa to "play ABC Radio". The varied schedule is available on the station's website and there are plans to increase broadcasting hours as new presenters come forward.

The quiz night will be held at Sizewell Sports and Social Club on Friday 24th June at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost just £3.00 each, with a maximum of 6 per team and are now available from Sizewell Sports and Social Club on 01728 830025. The club will be serving food from 5.00pm on the night, for those who wish to take advantage of the venue's 2-for-1 Friday meal offer, with bookings advisable.

Wickham Market Playing Field Bowls Club Opportunities for YOU: Bowls (also known as Green Bowls) is a game with a long and vibrant past. You may have heard that Sir Francis Drake allegedly determined to finish a game of bowls before he went off to fight the Spanish Armada. But bowls is also bang up to date, witness its championships featuring live on national TV. It offers opportunity and activity for both sexes and for age ranges from upper primary school through secondary school to senior citizen.

From humble beginnings in the 13th century, bowls has become a sport which is played today in over fifty countries. The world's oldest surviving bowls green (in Southampton) dates from 1299.

(At the Wickham Market Playing Field Bowls Club, we can only claim seventy years of activity).

Bowls survived a royal ban during the reigns of Edward III, Richard II and other monarchs because people played it in preference to practising archery - which was then an important skill for battle. Conversely Henry VIII was a keen bowler. The game of bowls was codified (common

rules published) after 1830 and modern rules were finally fixed in 1864.

Wickham Market Playing Field Bowls Club will be up and running for 2022. We're a friendly and welcoming club playing home games on our outdoor green at Wickham Market Playing Field.

We play in two local evening leagues (usually Wednesday and Thursday) and offer a weekly club night each Monday during the season which runs from late April through to September.

Why not give us a try? The green will be open for play, with a special welcome for any newcomers or returners, from 2pm-4pm on Saturday 30th April and Sunday 1st May 2022.

Why not turn up for a friendly and informal "roll-up" (taster session)? We can lend you the necessary bowls to try this sport.

work hard to create an eclectic programme and they are pleased that international singer Polly Gibbons (who originally hailed from Suffolk) is providing an evening of bluesy, soulful jazz joined by a jazz quartet led by the Artistic Director at Ronnie Scott's Club. Other events include the Derek Nash Band featuring Noel McCalla in his celebration of the genius of Stevie Wonder, and the closing musical event of the festival will be a particularly memorable concert from the renowned Blues Band, as it will be the final night of their Farewell Tour, an event which is expected to sell out very early.

Alongside an exceptional week of music will be inspirational talks on subjects as diverse as the Amazon Rain Forest and Sea Sagas and coastal people. Roy Clark will tell the story of the pirate radio station Radio Caroline, and Kate Bradbury will describe ways in which gardeners can attract wildlife and create habitats in their gardens. Comedy will be provided by Dr Phil Hammond who will recall funny incidents from his many years working in the NHS and Charlie Haylock will explain how he provided dialect tuition for the feature film 'The Dig'. For those who enjoy theatre, Paul Trigg will provide a compelling dramatisation of many of Charles Dickens' characters, and Cheryl Knight of the Apollo Theatre Company will bring us her delightfully funny and affectionate tribute to Joyce Grenfell.

He has performed at the Edinburgh Fringe and has appeared regularly on radio and television, as well as writing for the Independent newspaper and Private Eye. Also visiting the festival will be Cheryl Knight in her remarkable tribute to Joyce Grenfell. The reviews of Cheryl's: 'Ode to Joyce' show describe her performance as 'perfectly honed inhabiting the wit and wisdom of such a wonderfully loved and selfeffacing performer'. Also with a local link, is an evening concert with Polly Gibbons, a farmer's daughter from Suffolk, who came to sing in some of the greatest venues in the world.

The Sunday Times said that she 'is a jazz talent whose voice is steeped in vintage R&B with shades of Aretha Franklin' and Jazzwise magazine says that she is 'a truly exceptional talent'.

Residents of Reydon have just until the 1st June to sign up to have a scarecrow as part of this year's Reydon Scarecrow Trail.

This will be the eighth trail and it raises a significant amount of the money needed for the Reydon Christmas Lights each year.

The last six trails have raised over £9.5k and it encourages local Reydon people to get creative and make a scarecrow for outside their home or business. The trails gathers visitors from far and wide to come and admire Reydon's hard work, spot all the scarecrows and pick their favourite.

THE FESTIVAL IS BACK! So much had to change during the pandemic of the past two years and one temporary casualty was the Southwold Arts Festival with its annual celebration of theatre, music and entertainment. Happily in 2022, the Festival returns with a bumper package of the very best in entertainment.

The seventh Southwold Arts Festival is returning this summer with an exciting programme of events over eight days from 25th June to 2nd July 2022, opening with its magnificent street festival providing four hours of colourful activities for all the family including fancy dress, stalls, musicians and dancers.

This year's festival will be a wonderful celebration of the very best in music bringing to Southwold international recording artists covering musical genres to suit all tastes, including folk, blues, jazz and classical music. The opening concert will feature the hugely popular jazz singer and radio broadcaster Clare Teal, followed the next day by the award winning Opera Babes. Both of these shows sold out within weeks during their previous festival visits. The Festival will also feature the Southend Boys and Girls Choirs, and throughout the week, the Young Musicians showcases. Former 'Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year' Eliza Carthy is bringing her trio to the Festival later in the week, sharing the bill with the ever popular John Ward Band.

New British musical comedy premieres in Beccles Beccles-based musical theatre society The Waveney Light Opera Group (WLOG) are back after lockdown with a world premier!

They are presenting a new musical comedy written by two members of the group, Ian Cook and Ian Newton. In 2019, the pair started work on their third show together. They got off to a great start, then lockdown hit!

No more getting together around a piano, new methods of writing had to be found.

After mastering Zoom, the pair worked out a way to carry on and, after months of hard work, they emerged with another musical comedy, "The Ballad of Robyn Hood". The two Ians have decided to offer the show to all NODA societies, free of charge for a limited period, the only proviso being that companies should make a donation to an NHS charity. The first group to take up the offer was WLOG.

The show tells the story of an am dram group attempting to stage an unpublished work by two of the world's leading exponents of musical theatre, Andrew Laird Warbler and Tim Rhys! Robyn (with a 'y') is played

by Felicity. Her Aunt Christine left her the musical in her will.

The story goes that Christine once spent a bohemian summer in Paris where she shared a garret with two young musicians, the, soon to be famous, Andrew and Tim. After a particularly bohemian party, the boys decide to head off to Buenos Aires and 'Robyn Hood' is abandoned but Christine brings it home with her where it stays undiscovered for many years. The show follows the story of the society's struggle to get the show to stage.

The beginning and end of the month gave us a reminder we had only just come out of the winter season. The first week's conditions and indeed the last three days had the feel of winter at times, sometimes locked under leaden skies of stratus cloud. Generally, the influences controlling our weather were very different to preceding months as easterly type winds predominated.

Fortunately, the mid month period enjoyed a number of days when the position of high pressure funnelled winds from South of East resulting in sunny and mild

or even warm conditions at times.

Just perhaps when we thought our spring was been established, a sharp contrast occurred on the 29th, 30th and 31st with not only the previous three weeks but also the comparative days of 2021. The 31st was notable as the coldest day of the month with maximum 1C lower than the 1st and the one day when snow and hail showers were observed after a cold front passed over us from the north. Overall, this was the mildest March since 2019.

29th March 2022, maximum temp 8.1C, 2021 maximum temp 19.3C. 30th March 2022, maximum temp 9.7C, 2021 maximum temp 21.5C. 31st March 2022, maximum temp 6.3C, 2021 maximum temp 21.8C. The 1.18" rainfall total made this was the third consecutive dry March, 1.31" noted last March and only 1.03" in the same month of 2020.

This time in what was an often sunny and dry period during mid month, nearly 56% (0.66") of rainfall was recorded on the 30th and 31st. Immediately prior to these two days, due to the large area of high pressure, drought conditions had prevailed following the last rainfall noted on the 16th. After the first five days all recording modest rainfall totals, there were just three more noted during the next three and a half weeks.

1st April commenced wintry with a light dusting of snow on the ground and slight air frosts on 1st and 2nd. However as I write on 6th April, daytime and nighttime levels have improved to near or slightly above average. It is spring, so expect variability during the next few weeks.

SouthGen receives £75k funding to redevelop old Southwold & District Hospital site

Equal access to girls football festival towards males, and had two distinctive outcomes: Have fun and get active!

Students from all three schools were selected specifically for the opportunity, which wanted to involve students who had no, or very little previous experiences of playing football, and young people selected by school staff aiming to see a positive impact from being more active. The event was also support by Suffolk FA, and was attended by Kirsty Smith, who is actively trying to create more inclusive football provisions across the county.

Mr D Burton (Lead PE Practitioner) commented: "As a group of small, rural schools, we were keen to connect to create a unique opportunity and take our young female students outside of their comfort zone. All three of the SET secondary schools are developing provisions to allow females equal access to football, and this project was a great way to launch our work."

they haven't done before. They all worked together and mixed with other students from other schools.

Events like this are brilliant for students to take part in as they encompass physical activity, fun and social skills. It was great to be part of such an event and give the students the opportunity to do things they haven't done before."

Quote from one of the students: "When I knew we were going to be playing football, I didn't really want to go, but my teacher asked me to give it a try and I'm so glad I did. I've had lots of fun, met some people from other schools, and enjoyed a day outside. I think I also got better at football!"

The event was also supported by a group of student leaders, many of which had no previous experience of leading large groups of young people.

Following the impact of the pandemic, three high schools within the Seckford Education Trust (SET) wanted to create an event which aimed to engage more young females playing football.

In line with the Football Association and Barclay's 'biggest ever football session for girls' (a national campaign), SET Ixworth School hosted just under 100 young females from their trust schools including SET Beccles and Saxmundham School. By 2024, The FA's and Barclay's ambition is for girls to have the same football opportunities as boys in schools and clubs. #LetGirlsPlay is a campaign to drive influence and change perceptions, showing that football can and should be played by girls. It's bringing together a growing community of people of all genders, ages and backgrounds who want to champion equal access for girls, helping create independent, resilient young girls who will be a force for good in all local communities.

Southwold and Waveney Valley-based community benefit society, SouthGen, has received £75,000 in funding from Big Issue Invest, the investment arm of The Big Issue.

SouthGen is a charitable community benefit society that is democratically run by its members, on a one member, one vote basis, irrespective of how many shares they own.

SouthGen was created out of a crisis - the closure of the local hospital, and the threat that this historic building would be demolished and redeveloped as luxury housing. At the same time, it looked like the popular library might be forced to close because its lease was coming to an end and a new home couldn't be found. SouthGen turned this crisis into an opportunity.

The organisation was incorporated in 2017 to prevent the old Southwold and District Hospital from being turned into second homes.

SouthGen then partnered with Hastoe Housing Association to become the first community group in England and Wales to buy back from the NHS the decommissioned community hospital and recycle it for new uses that promote the sustainability of a rural area on Suffolk's East Coast - and redevelop it as an affordable housing and a community hub.

Halesworth Event Management have begun organising this year's Christmas Lights in Halesworth. For the last two years, due to the pandemic, we have limited ourselves to paying for and putting up the lights round town but have not held a switch-on event as in previous years. This year, as well as purchasing some new lights, we are planning a switch-on event in November.

One problem we have is that due to Health and Safety and insurance concerns, we cannot transport Father Christmas up the Thoroughfare on his sleigh as usual but would still like him to process up the Thoroughfare as we know how the children enjoy seeing him. We'd like to transport him in a small, pony trap like cart which can be pulled by his helpful elves - a horse drawn cart would again raise safety and insurance issues! We are asking if anyone in the community has a suitable cart which could be borrowed for the occasion. While we've been helped over the last two years by grants from Halesworth Town Council and others, our fundraising has been virtually non-existent so this year more than ever, we'll be appealing for your support. Woodbridge 10K The 40th annual Woodbridge Round-the-Town Charity races will be held in 2022 on Sunday 8th May. The races follow an undulating course through the streets of Woodbridge that brings the whole town out to line the streets and support the runners. This is always a hugely popular event and this year looks set to be as popular as ever!

The race raises money for local charities and over the 40 years the race has been run in excess of £100K has been raised. The beneficiary charities are selected each year by club members at the AGM. On the day there are two races: a 10km race for runners aged 15 and over and a junior 1.5km race for runners aged between 7 and 15 inclusive.

The 10km course consists of a short 600m section from the start line up to Market Hill and then consists of two laps through the streets of Woodbridge. Across the course there is around 83m of ascent (approx. 271 feet) so starting at a moderate pace is a good idea for most runners to leave enough in the tank for the later stages of the race.

The 1.5km junior course

follows the same route for the first 600m before heading down New Street and then onto the Thoroughfare and then up Church Street to finish back at Market Hill.

This is a terrific event that brings the town together to support, cheer and applaud whilst raising valuable funds for local charities. Please come along and enjoy the day!

It is always really good news when somebody new moves into the area, parish or district and almost immediately offers to help. This was the case with Richard and Nell. Richard is a long-standing member of that excellent unaccompanied choral group, illuminati. He offered their services to help us raise cash to complete the repair of our church, St. Mary's, Dallinghoo. The budget for the last phase of the work is £27.5k+VAT, no small sum!
