Beccles backs Fairtrade at Suffolk Conference
Four Beccles Fairtrade supporters took part in the annual Suffolk Association of Fairtrade Towns (SAFT) Conference in Ipswich this summer.
Beccles is one of nine Fairtrade Towns across Suffolk.
Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. There's also a social premium, an extra sum of money paid to communities to provide facilities such as clean drinking water, clinics and school classrooms.
In the UK, Fairtrade Town status is awarded by the Fairtrade
Foundation to communities committed to promoting Fairtrade through their town councils, local businesses and organisations.
Both local people and visitors may well recognise Fairtrade and the logo through the bespoke Beccles Fairtrade Chocolate Bar on sale at a number of outlets in the town.
During the conference, delegates visited the Ipswich Fairtrade Shop, a treasure chest of amazing products from across the world, from foodstuffs, stationery and toys to textiles, jewellery and cosmetics. Many of their products can be bought on: thefairtradeshopipswich.co.uk
New exhibition explores Chateaubriand's time in Beccles, 1793-1796
Vicomte Francois Renée de Chateaubriand the famous French Writer, Diplomat and Politician, fled the revolution in France as a young man and came to Britain in 1793
In East Anglia the Rev Bence Sparrow of Beccles, a prominent organiser and fundraiser for French refugees, posted an advertisement in a Yarmouth paper seeking someone capable of deciphering 12th century French manuscripts, of which there must have been many, in the local area, dating from Doomsday, and when the Town belonged to the Benedictine Abbey in Bury.
Chateaubriand was encouraged to apply and he
arrived in Beccles later that year. In 1794 he started teaching at Brightly's school in Ballygate, and frequented the homes of the gentry, who no doubt enjoyed the cultural exchange. He was particularly popular with young ladies wishing to improve their French. He remained in the Beccles and Bungay area until 1796, when he returned to London. The exhibition runs from 19th August until 31st October 2025 and is open 1:45pm-4:30pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday. We are a registered charity run by volunteers. Admission is free, donations are welcome. becclesmuseum.org.uk
A quacking good day out at Beccles Duck Race!
Beccles Quay was awash with colour, laughter, and a flotilla of feathery contenders on August 10th, as the Beccles Duck Race made a splash once again!
The free, family-friendly event ran from 10am to 5pm, attracting huge crowds eager to enjoy a day of entertainment, stalls, and of course the sight of lots of bright yellow ducks bobbing their way along the River Waveney. For just £5, the public could purchase a duck to enter into the main race, with all proceeds helping to support local causes.
The results of the Duck Race were as follows:
• 1st place: 072
• 2nd place: 148 • 3rd place: 665
• 4th place: 316 It wasn't just about speedstyle was on show too! The 'Best Dressed Duck' competition saw some wildly creative entries, with the winners crowned as:
2nd: 22
4th: 109
businesses also joined the fun with their own oversized 'corporate ducks',
brilliantly decorated ducks, the competition was tough - and the creativity from local businesses and community groups was nothing short of inspiring! Beccles Quay was packed from start to finish, with families, friends, and visitors soaking up the sunshine and atmosphere. The 2025 Beccles Duck Race proved, once again, to

Taekwon-do
First we wish to congratulate all those who passed their promotional Belt Gradings at ICENI Taekwon-do Club on July 21st.
The grading was the focal point of months of training, with technical progress assessments monitored along the way. Huge congratulations to our newest Black Belts; Hazel Sutton and Michael Wickwar, who are now ITF 1st Degree Black Belts at ICENI Taekwon-do Club. They are a great example of how to abide by the Tenets of Taekwondo, with both showing incredible indomitable spirit.
We're so very proud of them both, their achievements and the dedication they have shown to their Taekwon-do training over the last four years.
These two students have shown great levels of endurance, battled through challenging times, and have come through in True ICENI Warrior fashion.
They fully deserve their promotions, and stand testament to ICENI Taekwon-do's Martial Arts training ethos of using Mind, Body and Spirit.
On the grading day there were also two junior students that we are very proud of too, gaining their Provisional Black Belts. Both showing great levels of technique and maturity, proving they are well on their way to a 1st Degree Black Belt. No matter what Belt level a student attains at ICENI Taekwon-do, they will always be stronger, confident, and better enabled to defend themselves.
All our belt grades are nationally recognised with the British Martial Arts and Boxing Association.
If you're interested in trying a session, just come in on a Monday evening for a free two hour class, our training hall (Dojang) is at The Venue, Beccles. icenitaekwondo.co.uk

Beccles Amateur Sailing Club install defibrillator
A potentially life-saving defibrillator has been installed at Beccles Amateur Sailing Club and is now available for public use in emergencies. If someone suffers a cardiac arrest (whether at home, at work, or simply enjoying the outdoors) their chances of survival are less than one in 10 unless they receive prompt CPR and defibrillation. With each passing minute without intervention, survival odds drop by 10%. Quick access to a defibrillator in the crucial first few minutes can make all the difference.
With this in mind, Beccles Amateur Sailing Club began exploring funding opportunities for a public-access defibrillator just over a year ago. Thanks to generous support from the community (and the tireless dedication of club member Mark Popay, who championed the project from its earliest stages), the defibrillator and its all-weather cabinet were installed in spring 2025. Mark's attention to
detail and persistence in securing funding and managing installation logistics made this initiative a reality, and the club's committee and members are sincerely grateful for his hard work.
Although small in size, Beccles Amateur Sailing Club sits on a picturesque but comparatively remote stretch of the River Waveney near Beccles. The club is situated in an area where a wide community of sailors, anglers, paddleboarders, dog walkers, hikers, day boaters, and river cruisers use walkways and riverbank-any of whom might experience a cardiac emergency in the area. A first aid course hosted by the club in spring 2024 emphasised the critical role of CPR and early defibrillation, confirming the club's decision to make this life-saving equipment available to everyone-residents, day trippers, and holidaymakers alike.
Ceremony and Community Celebration
The defibrillator was
officially unveiled during a special ceremony held on Sunday 3rd August, attended by our generous grant providersincluding representatives from The Townlands Trust (Feoffees), East Suffolk District Council, (Caroline Topping), whose support made the project possible.
Club President Janet Forster opened the event with a heartfelt welcome speech celebrating the club's commitment to community safety.
The unveiling was followed by the annual Commodore's BBQ, bringing together members and guests for an evening of camaraderie and connection.
The festivities marked the start of the club's Sailing Regatta Week 2025, with three days of spirited sailing ahead, further showcasing the energy and warmth for which Beccles Amateur Sailing Club is known.
Words from the Commodore George Folkard:
"The installation of the defibrillator stands as a testament
to the care and commitment exemplified by long-standing member, Mark Popay. Through tireless coordination, fundraising, and collaboration with local authorities, Mark ensured this vital resource is available not just to club members but to all who enjoy the riverside.
Mark's efforts reflect the very heart of Beccles Amateur Sailing Club's values-placing safety, inclusivity, and community engagement at the forefront of everything we do. By turning vision into action, Mark has elevated our operational standards and shown how empowered volunteers can leave a lasting legacy for both the sailing club
and Beccles.
We're proud to be recognised as the Friendliest Club on the Broads, and it's through the kindness, initiative, and leadership of members like Mark that this reputation continues to thrive.
I'd also like to give my personal thanks to The Townlands Trust, East Suffolk District Council, and especially Caroline Topping for their generous support. Without their funding, this defibrillator simply wouldn't be here. We're incredibly proud to serve the wider community, and with help like this, we're living up to our name of being the Friendliest Club on the Broads."
July 2025: From scorching heat to soaking rain
July 2025 brought a mix of summer heat and some very British downpours to Beccles.
The month kicked off with a real scorcher, reaching 30.5C on the 1st-the hottest day of the year so far. For a while, it looked like we were heading for one of the warmest Julys on record. But as the month went on, the weather took a turn, with cooler temperatures and a steady stream of rain arriving from the Atlantic. By the end of the month, we'd seen more rain than usual (making it the wettest month of the year so far) though overall, temperatures still came in warmer than average, continuing the trend we've seen throughout 2025.
This summary is compiled from the records of Stephen Bartholomew of Beccles.
July 2025
• Maximum temp: 30.5C (87F) on the 1st, compared with 29.5C (85F) in July 2024.
• Minimum temp: 9.9C (49F) on the 2nd, compared with 8.5C (47F) in July 2024.
• Average maximum temp: 23.92C (75F) in 2025. 22.01C
(71F) in 2024. 22.64C (72F) on average.
• Average minimum temp: 14.07C (57F) in 2025. 13.12C (55F) in 2024. 12.68C (54F) on average.
• Mean temperature: 19C (66F) in 2025. 17.56C (63F) in 2024. 17.66C (63F) on average.
• Rainfall total: 3.71", compared with 2.89" in July 2024. (30-year average (1981-2010) 2.08") 2025 total: 178% of average.
• Most rainfall on one day: 1" on the 26th.
• Wind direction (mainly from): North-west 10 days, south-west 9 days, south-east 4 days, and south 4 days. The run of "warmer than average" months continued in July. Each month this year (except January) has achieved this. Unusually for 2025, the month was wetter than the long term average and the wettest of the year to date. For the first 19 days we were on course for one of the warmest Julys on my record (the almost tropical example of 2006 excepted, also the warmest month of any, when average maximum temperature for the
month exceeded 27C and mean was nearly 21C). However this prospect was diminished when more traditional British summer weather prevailed during the last 12 days; thanks to the influence of the Atlantic and the associated weather fronts which at times brought some of the wetter days of not only this month, but also the year to date.
The coolest maximum of 18.0C recorded on the 24th was one of only 2 days to fail to reach 20C during the whole month and for 52 days dating back to 8th June. Despite this, it was still the warmest July since 2022 and before that 2018.
The month started where the end of June left off and recorded the highest temperature to date this year with 30.5C on 1st July, one of 12 days to exceed 25C.
This was the warmest July day since 2022 when 3 days exceeded this level (34.6C, 34.5C and 30.7C).
• 1st-19th: Average maximum
temp: 24.9C. Average minimum temp: 14.1C. Rainfall: 0.97"
• 20th-31st: Average maximum temp: 22.4C. Average minimum temp: 14.0C. Rainfall: 2.74"
Although the 3.71" total on 15 rain days made this only the wettest July since 2023, it was also the wettest month of any since February 2024 (4.38"). To give an indication of the dry nature of this year to date, this total represented over half the previous six months total (6.90").
The first 14 days of the month were largely dry (except for 0.20"on the 6th). However after a further 0.20"of rain recorded on the 15th, there was a nine day period from the 18th to the 26th when 3.15" of rain fell and transformed not only the total, but also helped revive the browning vegetation in our countryside.
The wettest day was the 26th when 1.00" of rain fell mainly during the afternoon, (13th June also had an inch daily total, very rare for this to happen in
successive months here in East Anglia). Other notable July daily totals recorded were 0.65" on the 21st, 0.54" on the 22nd and 0.48" on the 18th, any of which would have been the highest in many of the recent months.

Beccles Mayor unveils new sign honouring town friendship tree
Beccles Town Mayor, Cllr Barry Darch, rolled up his sleeves on the morning of July 18th to install a new sign beside the Ginkgo Biloba tree at Beccles Quay. The sign was thoughtfully crafted by members of the Beccles Men's Shed. The tree was a gift from the people of Petit-Couronne in
2003, symbolising the friendship between the two towns.
Cllr Darch thanked everyone involved in the project and expressed his hope that the tree (one of the most resilient species on the planet) will continue to flourish, along with Beccles' strong and enduring connection with Petit-Couronne.
Brave 'soles' challenged to take on Hospice's Firewalk
St. Elizabeth Hospice is calling on all brave 'soles' to take part in its autumn Firewalk 2025.
Taking place on Friday 24th October, the event will see fearless firewalkers cross barefoot over a 5-metre path of red-hot embers in aid of the hospice, which provides free services to improve life for people living with a progressive or life-limiting illness across East & Mid-Suffolk, Great Yarmouth and Waveney. Taking place at Old Hall Farm, Southwold, participants will undergo one hour of training before embarking on their fiery challenge which is described as similar to walking on hot sand.
James Fox-Golding, Events and Challenges Manager at the hospice, said: "Firewalk returns this year as the perfect way to warm up for autumn
while raising vital funds for St Elizabeth Hospice.
"If you're looking for a fundraising challenge with a fiery twist, this is the event for you. Every penny raised will help us continue providing compassionate care and support to patients and families throughout the local community."
Sponsored by MHA Baker Tilly, Firewalk will be held 7pm to 9:30pm. Old Hall Farm will be selling a range of BBQ food, with vegetarian options available, and drink at the event for participants, friends and family to enjoy - with spectators having free entry.
Each fearless firewalker will need to pay a non-refundable registration fee of £25 and pledge to raise a minimum of £50, with support available from the hospice fundraising team. They will also receive a t-shirt

Sonic Wave heading for Bungay's Fisher Theatre
Sonic Wave (an exciting new concert series) is heading for Bungay's Fisher Theatre on September 27th.
Sonic Wave is a new initiative bringing an eclectic palette of original music talent to rural Suffolk, and for many of the artists their first time performing in East Anglia.
Behind it are Françoise Lamy and Graham Daniels of Suffolkbased artists Addictive TV.
Supporting grassroots music, the series highlights artists who cross over folk, world, jazz, electronic and contemporary styles. Lamy, creative producer said: "We're really excited about bringing some incredible music to our doorstep with a dynamic mix of touring performers and local talent. It's our way of widening what's on offer and adding to Suffolk's vibrant rural music scene."
When Sonic Wave comes to Bungay's Fisher Theatre on September 27th, seats will be removed to transform the space into a vibey dancefloor to welcome Alex Etchart & Vientos, a group from South America blending the emotive harmonies of LatinX and British folklore into wild electronica;
support is from Norwich-based Irish singer-songwriter Emma O'Reilly, a unique talent on the rise who's voice is as powerful as her lyrics. The evening will be topped off with local DJs Sherpa Beats and Son of Jim (The Ushti Kushti Lounge). Then on November 7th, Sonic Wave returns to The Cut in Halesworth for an evening of cinematic music with film composer David Julyan. Best known for his haunting soundtracks for Oscar-winning director Christopher Nolan, David Julyan steps out from behind the silver screen for a rare performance reimagining his score for Nolan's breakout film Memento, coinciding with the film's 25th anniversary; he'll also perform more personal compositions with synths and string quartet accompaniment. There's will be a short talk/Q&A before the performance. Plus Suffolk's virtuoso pianist Will Fergusson will also be performing improvised pieces in the bar with a filmic flair.
Tickets are £12/£15 and can be purchased direct at the venues The Fisher in Bungay, The Cut in Halesworth, and online or at the door. www.sonicwave.music

Leaders honoured as Scouting flourishes
in Halesworth
As we relax and enjoy the summer holiday, it's a good time to reflect on a busy term of Scouting.
We kicked off the summer term with our annual Group Camp at Eaton Vale in Norwich.
The young people had a fantastic weekend staying in the Alpine Village and enjoying activities such as archery, kayaking, raft building and climbing. We then continued our adventures in our weekly section meetings, with Scouts hiking from Brampton back to Halesworth, Cubs going on a scavenger hunt and the Beavers learning how to put up a tent.
These activities are only made possible through the fantastic Leaders and Trustees that keep our Scout Group running. I am delighted to share that David (our Scout Leader) has been recognised for his outstanding leadership in Scouting and was presented with the Scout Association's Silver Acorn award. In addition, Gaby (our Cub Leader) was also recognised for her leadership of Cubs, and was awarded the Scout Association's Order of Merit. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are all currently full and have waiting lists for young people to join - in fact, Scouting has
never been more popular in Halesworth. For more young people to access Scouting in Halesworth, we do need more adult volunteers. We're hosting our Group AGM at 7:30pm on September 19th at the Scout Hut in Chediston Street. This would be an excellent opportunity to meet the people who make Scouting happen in Halesworth and find out more information about how you could get involved and volunteer. Halesworth Climate Action Energy Weekend
What if we never had to worry about energy price rises again?
What if Halesworth generated its own electricity, reducing energy costs for homes and businesses? What if all our homes were insulated so well that our energy costs were under £100 a year? These are the questions behind a weekend of positive, practical workshops and discussion, on the last weekend in September.
The event is organised by Halesworth Area Sustainability Hub (HASH) and is hosted by St. Mary's Church, Halesworth.
Whether you're interested in taking steps to reduce bills and use cleaner forms of energy as a family, a business or at community level, this is a chance to gather information and inspiration from experts and local people who have already begun doing just that. Why not come along and learn more?
We'll also be hearing a report from sustainable energy experts, Opergy, who have been commissioned to produce a baseline study of our town's current energy use and carbon footprint. From this baseline (where we are now) we'll be developing a Net Zero Pathway to help Halesworth and area reach the sustainable energy targets adopted by the Town Council, where we want to get to.
Our partners (Blyth Valley Churches) are organising a linked week of activities with local schools to engage children with the practical energy solutions to big problems that affect their futures.
September 26th: What if? We'll be imagining our energy futures:
• Adrian Ramsay MP will talk about the political dimension.
• Professor Peter Hobson will
describe 'Energy Landscapes' and climate change: Adapting to extreme weather events ecosystems and natural energy.
• John Collins will tell the remarkable story of Charsfield Community Energy
September 27th: Pathway to Net Zero: OPERGY will present their report commissioned by the Town Council on current energy usage; They'll explain the baseline and potential way forward for residents, businesses, transport, and land use. Then there will be a chance to join workshops on a list of topics including:
• How I changed my house: Local residents will describe how they changed their homes with and without grants, to insulate and adapt.
• Challenge the Landlord: How as a tenant you can safely challenge your landlord; and how landlords can benefit from retrofitting, particularly in the light of proposed government strategy.
• East Suffolk Energy Strategy: councillors will explain how this informs planning decisions.
• Community Energy: John Taylor (Community Energy UK) and James Rolls (Diocesan Net Zero Carbon Officer) and the Deben Climate Centre will share the joys of community energy ventures.
• My carbon footprint: How to calculate your carbon footprint, with pleasure and not pain.
• Halesworth Town Council: What is the responsibility of the town council in supporting the people and businesses of Halesworth to Net Zero?

Local radio station treats listeners to Latitude!
GenX Radio Suffolk, a local radio station that broadcasts online and on DAB+ from Halesworth, Ipswich, Lowestoft, Leiston and Bury St Edmunds to name a few, was the only commercial radio station with backstage studios at this years Latitude Festival at Henham Park.
GenX Radio provided four days of on air coverage, social media coverage and even a three hour multi-camera livestream from the backstage studios.
Producer Neil Whiteside
said "This year, our small but immensely talented team were able to focus on all the areas that make Latitude such a unique and treasured event. From the feedback we've received, we know our listeners were delighted with our coverage. It's a rare privilege to be invited backstage at Latitude, and even more so for two years in succession. We're extremely grateful to Melvyn
Benn and his team."

We were treated to interviews and live performances in our studio from up and coming local artists. All of which you can see and listen to on our Facebook page.
One listener said "You've really brought latitude to the listeners without the rain, grotty toilets and queues. Thank you."
GenXRadio Station manager James Hazell said "I'm extremely proud that the world renowned Latitude Festival has entrusted GenX Radio to provide high quality, multi-platform coverage via exclusive back stage locations. It's a resounding endorsement of what the GenX Radio project continues to achieve."
From Bell Towers to Butter Crosses
Exploring architecture in Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth
Beccles, Bungay and Halesworth are providing a fascinating programme of nearly 40 different events for Heritage Open Days from September 12th-21st. Many of the events focus on architecture (the national theme of Heritage Open Days 2025). In Beccles, you'll be able to find out about historic Leman House and various religious buildings as well as enjoy several guided walks - or climb to the top of the Bell Tower for a great architectural view. A reminiscences session will allow reflection on how the town's buildings and businesses
have changed. Children can be creative at the library with Lego or craft materials. A highlight of the Bungay events is a presentation from the renowned historian James Wright on 'Historic Building Myth Busting: Uncovering Folklore, History & Archaeology in Bungay'. Other events include a special display about the Butter Cross and other historic structures and one with illustrations of Bungay's roofs, attics, cellars and what's 'under the road'.
In Halesworth, visitors can enjoy the Masonic Lodge of Prudence and the always popular
Bank House amongst other buildings religious and secular.
The old Halesworth buildings digital slideshow will be on offer and the new 'Halesworth History Map' which explores many aspects of the town. Guided walks include a heritage tree walk and one focusing on vanished buildings and bridges old and new.
The full programme is available at: heritageopendays. org.uk or on printed programmes available in each town. It's also available on town council websites. All events are free, but some need to be booked.

Chamber music comes home to Framlingham
Framlingham may be best known for its historic castle and market-town charm, but in recent months it's also become a quietly powerful force in classical music. The chamber music concerts in Framlingham embody a proud tradition shared across the UK, where classical music flourishes, not on the global stages of London, but in the resonant spaces of local communities.
Framlingham Concerts is rooted in the values of community and connection, bridging generations, inviting newcomers into the fold, and supporting emerging artists at every turn. Recent programmes have featured young performers making their debut, alongside seasoned professionals, creating a sense of shared purpose and musical continuity.
"This approach brings classical music alive in local communities-it draws people together, encourages young talent, and places world-class culture at the heart of everyday life. That is why we offer free tickets to Framlingham local schools-so that young people can experience the magic of live music and feel part of something extraordinary." - Penny
These concerts don't just present music-they embody it. Framlingham welcomes audiences not as passive attendees but as active participants, inviting people to discover classical music without pretension. It's a model of accessibility that feels both welcoming and radical: an intimate venue, affordable tickets, and programming that balances familiar masterworks with less well-known repertoire.
What is happening in Framlingham is echoed in many towns across the UK - in market towns, coastal villages, and rural communities. Each place has its own voice, shaped by landscape, history, and people. Together, they echo the vital truth that culture belongs to everyone, not just those living within reach of metropolitan concert halls.
Framlingham Concerts is showing us that world-class music doesn't have to be distant or formal-it can be close to home, and full of heart.

Rehearsals begin for their new season on Wednesday 10th September. This autumn's works include Mozart's Vespers, Parry's well loved 'Blest Pair of Sirens' and Fletcher's joyous
festive work 'Ring out Wild Bells'. The concert date for your diary is December 13th, 7pm, at Framlingham College Chapel.
The choir's always keen to welcome new singers, if you're interested in joining the choir, come along to one or both of our Taster Evenings on Wednesday 10th and 17th September to discover the joy of choral
music. No audition necessary, all that's needed is a musical ear and enthusiasm for learning the music.
Rehearsals are held Sir Robert Hitcham's Primary School in Framlingham, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.
For more details, email: phoenixsingers@outlook.com or come along on the night.

Are you new to accounting for a charity?
When a charity should register:
Charities exist in different legal forms, some are unincorporated, meaning they have no status with Companies House, whilst others are incorporated with Companies House, usually limited by membership guarantee. All charities must follow the Charity Commission's framework and register when required in accordance with registration thresholds. Charitable companies must also meet Companies House requirements. Charitable Incorporated Organisations (CIOs), although having 'Incorporated' in their title, are only registered with the Charity Commission.
Charity Commission thresholds are based on gross income, that is before deduction of any charitable expenses. If a charitable organisation raises gross income of less than £5,000, there is no requirement to register unless it is a CIO, (CIOs register with the Charity Commission in all cases). When gross income exceeds £5,000, the charity must register with the Charity Commission unless it is deemed an exempt or 'excepted' charity.
Exempt charities are those within the regulation of another regulatory body and 'excepted' charities are churches and chapels of certain religious charities and Scouts and Guides groups.
Accounts and scrutiny - basics: Accounting records should always be kept regardless of income levels. The record keeping method can be decided by the charity trustees and may be on a simple incoming/outgoing basis for smaller organisations but may warrant greater detail as size and transactions increase, this might lead to using accounting software geared to charities. The charity's trustees must also prepare a Trustee Annual Report (TAR) if registered to accompany their accounts.
The Charity Commission will
require sight of accounts when gross income exceeds £25,000.
Those accounts and TAR must be filed online within 10 months of the year end to the Charity Commission via a secure 'My Charity Commission Account' portal which each charity must set up with the Charity Commission in advance of submission.
Additionally, trustees are required to get their accounts externally checked when gross income exceeds £25,000, known as an independent examination. This independent check must be performed by someone who is unconnected to the treasurer or trustees personally before the accounts and report are submitted. A caveat to this is the charity's governing document may override here if it states that a check is always required. Should gross income either exceed £1million, or gross assets exceed £3.26million combined with a gross income of more than £250,000, an audit is required instead.
