History of Halesworth...
If you’re after a place steeped in stories, character, and centuries of change, Halesworth is ready to take you on a journey through time! Let’s step back through the ages and uncover the layers of history that shaped this remarkable Suffolk town.
Ancient roots: Long before Halesworth became the town we know today, the area was home to Roman settlers. The River Blyth (wider then than it is now) served as an ideal waterway for travel and trade, connecting inland settlements to the coast and even the wider continent. The fertile land made it attractive to the Saxons who followed, and later the Normans, after the Norman Conquest in 1066, established their own foothold here. From the start, Halesworth was a place of strategic and agricultural importance.
From Hamlet to Homestead: By the Domesday Book in 1086, Halesworth had earned its place in written history, recorded under the name ‘Healesuurda’ (meaning ‘homestead’). The record also notes that the parish was then under the care of Ulf the Priest. Though modest in size at the time, the seeds of a thriving community had already been sown.
Medieval Marketplace: Halesworth flourished in the Middle Ages, with trade and commerce at the heart of town life. Local merchants were heavily involved in the wool and cloth industries (two trades that brought growing prosperity). In 1223, the town was officially granted the right to hold a weekly market by King Henry III. The tradition of trading continued and, remarkably, that market still takes place every Wednesday, over 800 years later.
The Wool Boom: The wool trade truly put Halesworth on the map, transforming it into a wealthy town. Many of the grand, timber-framed buildings you can see today were built during this golden era and serve as lasting reminders of its rich past. While the industry has long since declined, the town’s historic character endures, making it a treasure trove for visitors who appreciate heritage architecture and stories from centuries past.
Market Place

World War II and the skies above Halesworth: In the 20th century, Halesworth found itself playing a key role during WWII. The town became home to the U.S. Army Air Force, hosting both the 56th Fighter Group and the 489th Bomb Group. The skies above were far from quiet as these units operated from the local airfield.
A highlight of that era was the visit of American bandleader Glenn Miller and his orchestra, who gave an unforgettable performance in a hangar at Halesworth Airfield on August 6th, 1944 (one of several stops in Suffolk that summer).
Discover more at our Museums:
For those keen to explore further, the Halesworth & District Museum (located at the railway station on Station Road) offers fascinating exhibitions covering local archaeology, geology, and historical life in the area. Just a short walk from the town centre, it’s a must-visit. halesworthmuseum.org.uk
To dive deeper into the town’s WWII legacy, head to the Halesworth Airfield Museum. Take the Bungay road out of town, and turn right onto Sparrowhawk Road at the Triple Plea roundabout. The museum is just along the road on the left. Here you’ll find a large and moving collection of wartime memorabilia, much of it directly tied to the airfield’s storied past. halesworthairfieldmuseum.co.uk
Explore on foot: Want to see the town’s history up close? Follow the Halesworth Town Trail, marked with charming duck symbols along the way. Begin your journey at The Angel Hotel, then head towards London Road, loop up Steeple End into the Market Place, and continue on through the town’s historic streets. The circular walk will eventually bring you full circle, offering a gentle yet enriching way to experience Halesworth’s hidden corners and historic highlights.
Halesworth Millennium Green...
Where can you find woodlands old and new, waterways, ponds, heathland, meadows some grazed some cut, a community orchard - all a few minutes walk from the town just through the Town Park? On Halesworth Millennium Green of course! Catch up with history at the engine shed site creatively restored by the Southwold-Halesworth Narrow Gauge Railway Society, look out for water voles along the even older “navigation” where wherries brought goods between Halesworth and Southwold. All managed solely by volunteers, and protected for local people and visitors forever by being a CIO (charitable incorporated organisation).
The Millennium Green was created in the year 2000 from 32 acres of grazing marsh in the flood plains of the River Blyth and the Town River, and its water meadows help to protect the town from flooding. Since 2000, further land has been added to this glorious public open space and the Green now spreads over 50 acres (20 hectares).
A superb all-weather track, Woolnough Way (part of National Cycle Route 1) snakes through north-south and gives smooth access for people on foot as well as for cycles, mobility scooters and push
chairs. Bike Active North Suffolk (BANS) regularly leads rides for less able people along the Track. 2024 saw the eventual replacement of White Bridge in a major building project which rejoined the two halves of the Green at last. The Green is rich in wildlife, in geology and history, a perfect place to explore. We have just finished a big community tree-planting scheme, and soon the Environment Agency will be supporting us again with a project to increase the shallow ponds (scrapes) in Blyth Meadow that can be used by birds.
Would you like to help, why not join a work party? Bring a drink and a nibble and we’ll supply gloves and tools. We work for approximately two hours with a sociable break in the middle but you can do as little or as much as you have time for. Or help with more strategic matters by becoming a Trustee.

Dog friendly Halesworth...
Whether you’re a local dog owner or visiting with your canine, you’ve found the perfect base for exploring the great outdoors together. From riverside rambles to coastal strolls and forest trails, there’s no shortage of places to stretch those legs... two and four!
Room to roam at the Millennium Green: Halesworth’s home to the largest Millennium Green in the country (we talk more about this on page 23), over 50 acres of open space right on the edge of town. With an all-weather path winding through the site, it’s brilliant for year-round walks. You’ll be sharing the landscape with a rich variety of wildlife, so keep your eyes peeled! You’re welcome to loop around the Green as many times as you like, but do be aware that cattle graze here between May and November.
Follow the river: For a scenic walk that starts right in the heart of Halesworth, take the riverside path along the Blyth. This peaceful trail leads you through the Millennium Green and onward towards the villages of Blyford and Wenhaston, eventually reaching Blythburgh. If you and your pup are still feeling energetic, you can continue all the way to Walberswick.
Beach days with wagging tails: Craving sea air and sandy paws? The Suffolk coast is only a short drive away. One hidden gem is Cove Hithe, head north on the A12 and take a right at Wrentham. After parking, it’s about a 15-minute walk to the beach, but the reward is well worth it as this stretch of sand is often blissfully quiet.
Into the woods: If you prefer leafy canopies and forest trails, Dunwich Forest is a must. Just a short drive south, this woodland is full of well-marked walking routes, offering a range of distances. Visit in late spring, especially from May to early June, and you might catch the forest’s Rhododendrons in full, vibrant bloomadding a splash of colour to your day out.
Vets: Hopefully, you won’t need a vet! However, here are some local ones:
• Be aware of, and adhere to, restrictions limiting where dogs can go. Particularly if it impacts local wildlife or livestock.
• Keep your dog close to you and under your control at all times.
• Use a lead when needed or requested.
• Prevent your dog from approaching cordoned areas.
• Always bag and bin your dog’s waste.
• Make sure you have fresh drinking water for your dog if you plan to be out for an extended period of time.

To understand how Halesworth and its surrounding villages became what they are today, start with Halesworth & District Museum. Spanning prehistory to living memory, its collections reflect the generosity of local people—and the Museum itself is entirely run by volunteers.
The Museum’s displays change regularly, but some are long-term favourites. Highlights include the Wissett Bronze Age axes (among the best in England) the mysterious Blythburgh Iron Age gold coins, and the unique 19thcentury Lincoln letters. You’ll also find stories of Halesworth’s medieval Lords of the Manor, the town’s 1645 witch trials, and a range of archaeological and geological exhibits.
While not a railway museum, the Museum always features something on local rail history. Halesworth Station’s unique moveable platforms sit next door—see how they worked by pressing the button on our model in the railwaythemed lobby.
Created by the community, for the community, the Museum welcomes school and group visits by arrangement. Teacher resource boxes support National Curriculum studies, while reminiscence

boxes help carers spark memories in older people. Our history volunteers can chat with locals about life over the past century, and the study area offers resources for researching local and family history.
In addition, the Museum stages a series of talks on a wide range of local history, which attract large audiences.
There’s plenty to enjoy at the Museum - not just as a visitor, but as a volunteer. Could you spare a few hours a month as a steward or help behind the scenes? It’s a great way to support a valued local asset, learn new things, and meet people. Or show your support by joining the Friends of the Museum, who enjoy seasonal events, a newsletter, and more.
The Museum is open Tues & Thurs 10am-12:30pm, Wed, Fri & Sat 10am4pm, and is closed Sun & Mon; see the website for winter closures.
Entry is free, but donations are always welcome. For more information, or to get involved, drop in at the Museum, email: office@halesworthmuseum.org.uk, or visit: halesworthmuseum.org.uk

Celebrating 40 years of keeping our community moving in Suffolk
As DARCO marks its 40th anniversary, we proudly relect on a journey that began with innovation, and a deep routed commitment to patient care.
What started in 1985 with Jon Vander-Molen founding the company V-M Orthotics Ltd in Suffolk, has grown into being part of a global leader in diabetic foot care, trauma and surgical recovery, physical therapy, and preventative solutions.
That same year, Dr. Darby (from West Virginia) turned a sketch on a napkin into the irst DARCO product; a post-operative shoe, laying the foundation for a shared vision: To deliver highquality, accessible podiatric care to patients everywhere.
A Suffolk Legacy, A Global Mission:
Our story is deeply tied to Suffolk, where V-M Orthotics irst began.
Since 2018 (when DARCO acquired the business), we’ve been proudly based in Halesworth, serving as the UK distribution hub for DARCO foot and ankle products. We continue to develop and deliver trusted orthotic solutions across the UK and beyond. Including to our local Halesworth podiatry clinic, Angel Podiatry, who stock our stylish new Movilo® therapeutic comfort shoes in four colours.
Drawing on decades of local experience and strong ties to the NHS and UK healthcare professionals, we focus on preventative, community-based care that improves patient outcomes and supports mobility and independence.
Innovation Built on Trust: With some of our products now available on prescription (including our advanced Solace System® for plantar pressure ofloading), we’re proud to be making advanced podiatric care more accessible - right from our Halesworth base.
Get in touch: Every step matters, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with our knowledgeable team at 01986 798120 or browse: www.vmorthotics.co.uk. We don’t have retail outlets, but you can buy any of our products online or by phone, and we offer a irst-class postal service anywhere in the UK mainland.
Whether you’re visiting, or lucky enough to call Halesworth home, you’ll be spoilt for choice for places to go and things to do in the local area! If you venture beyond, there’s even more to explore. Here’s a few ideas for a great day out:
Framlingham: Less than 15 miles southwest, you’ll find the pretty market town of Framlingham. These days, it’s perhaps best-known as being the hometown of Ed Sheeran, but take a trip and you’ll discover a gorgeous town with lots of shops, cafés, pubs and culture. Much like the rest of Suffolk, Framlingham is a place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. European café culture is more noticeable here, with lots of chairs and tables around the central market place. Of course, you can’t visit Framlingham without going to its 12-century castle. It’s a beautiful and unmissable photo opportunity!
Woodbridge: On the banks of the River Deben, Woodbridge has a rich maritime history. These days, the river’s primarily a place for leisure activities. So if you enjoy sailing, this is the place for you! Woodbridge is just 40 minutes down the A12 from Halesworth, or just over 35 minutes by train with a direct line from Halesworth. A great mix of high street names and independents make for a superb shopping experience. If you need a shopping break, there’s lots of cafés, pubs and restaurants that will be delighted to offer you much-needed respite before you head back out. Of course, there’s plenty of history and culture here too!
Venture Beyond Halesworth...
Aldeburgh: A large high street with good shopping and world-famous fish and chips awaits you in Aldeburgh. A number of seafront hotels and eateries offer a lovely variety of places to enjoy an evening meal, cocktail or pint of your favourite local ale. The pebble beach is home to the famous scallop sculpture which is another essential photo opportunity when in Suffolk. Home to Benjamin Britten, Aldeburgh has a terrific arts scene so it’s not to be missed!
Beccles: Just 20 minutes north is the charming town of Beccles. The largest of the towns mentioned on this page, Beccles is a thriving town and is known as the gateway to the Norfolk Broads. A busy town centre has all that you’d expect to find. Good shopping awaits and plenty of places to eat and drink. Though the coast is just a short drive, those who like swimming outside will enjoy the Lido (open in the summer months). If you prefer life on the river, head to the local boatyard to hire a dayboat or canoe and get out there and explore the beautiful Broads.

My dad has lived at Highfield House for two and a half years. I have always found the staff to be amazing, so caring and kind, nothing is too much trouble. They look after my dad and all his quirky ways with kindness. The management are brilliant and always keep me up to date with what's going on with my Dad, even the small things.
