Getting back to normal

W

e’ve been away on two actual launches this month, for the Fiat Scudo/E-Scudo and for Ford’s E-Transit. These are the first proper European launches that we have attended in more than Dan Gilkes, two years. Add in the fact that editor there are two actual exhibitions in the UK this month and that must mean that things are at least starting to get back to normal, or at least it feels that way.

Of course, many van operators never actually stopped working during the various lockdown periods, providing essential deliveries and services to keep Britain moving behind the scenes. That of course means that their vehicles continue to build mileage and that their owners are now probably looking to replace them with the latest LCVs. Unfortunately, that still isn’t happening as fast as many would like, not least the manufacturers who would love to be able to meet demand with rapid delivery of new vans. Dealers should at the very least be picking up additional service and maintenance work though, as vans age and mileages continue to increase.

Which is why the proposal to stretch MOT inspections from one to two years, seems like madness. According to the DVLA, in the last three months of 2021, 38.25% of 3.5-tonne vans failed their test first time around. That’s around 88,000 heavy vans that were deemed to be unroadworthy when inspected for each of those three months. More worryingly, almost 12% of those vans had a dangerous defect, including brakes, lighting and suspension failures.

Until we can collectively reduce first-time failures in the van community, extending MOT testing times seems like a dangerous way for hard-pressed businesses to save £55.

Of course, if you are looking to replace vans, both the ITT Hub exhibition and the Commercial Vehicle Show are this month. We’ll be attending the two shows and reporting back in the June issue, but both seem worth the time out of your diary if you can make it.

News Shortages causing fleet headaches A shortage of daily rental vans is causing problems for businesses according to the Association of Fleet Professionals. AFP director James Pestell said that the issue has been affecting short term van hire for some time.

“The problem is that many daily rental companies defleeted large numbers of vehicles during the pandemic and, because of the semiconductor shortage affecting car and van production, have found difficulty in replacing them. Even when they can get stock, they are having to pay something closer to list price, which has not historically been their business model,” he said.

“As a result, fleets have found themselves

in a situation where booking rental is very difficult, prices are rising quite quickly and, even if you can get hold of a vehicle, the supplying company will often ask for it back at some point to fulfil other pre-existing bookings.

“This is happening at a time when fleets themselves are in situation where, again because of vehicle production issues, they actually need more vans from rental companies.

It is becoming a genuine headache on a daily basis for many operators.”

Implications The issue is also forcing some fleets to delay servicing and repairs, as relief vehicles are of-

ten unavailable while they are off the road.

This has operational implications from a risk management point of view that require careful handling.

“Similarly, there are few rental vehicles to provide a fallback when breakdowns occur, meaning downtime is becoming a more and more serious problem, interrupting fleet operations and adding to costs over time,” said Pestell.

“Also, getting hold of rental vehicles for use by new starters is tricky, especially for the kind of timescales that are now needed with new vehicle waiting times often tipping into 6-12 months.”

Rhino secures Hubb Systems Cheshire-based van storage specialist Rhino Products Group has acquired racking and accessory manufacturer Hubb Systems, as it looks to further diversify its product offering. Through its in-house engineering design facility, Rhino Products will gradually introduce a selection of Hubb Systems’ products into its own catalogue, following a series of improvements and design upgrades that bring the accessories into line with Rhino’s testing standards.

Amarok breaks cover Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will rejoin the European pick-up market at the end of the year with an all-new Amarok. Though heavily based on the next generation Ford Ranger, as part of the two companies’ cooperative LCV deal, the Amarok will have its own look, though VW is keeping that under wraps at present.

However, the new model will be 100mm longer than its predecessor, with a wheelbase that is stretched by 175mm, providing more space in the double cab. Payload is increased, to as 4 VANUSER • MAY 2022

much as 1.2 tonnes and the truck will be able to pull a 3.5-tonne trailer. There will be one petrol engine and four diesels, with 2.0-litre four cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 layouts on offer. More than 30 ADAS systems will be available, of which 20 are new to Amarok.

Expect five trim levels, from Amarok to Life and Style. Equal range-topping trims will be PanAmericana and Aventura, focused on off-road and on-road comfort respectively. The new Amarok will launch at the end of 2022.

Isuzu launches Arctic Truck Isuzu has added the Arctic Trucks AT35 to its D-Max pick-up range. The truck has been developed to tackle the toughest terrain, with an enhanced chassis riding on giant 35” tyres. The suspension is upgraded, with elevated Bilstein performance parts that provide an additional 50mm of height compared to the standard pick-up.

Ground clearance is increased to 266mm at the front and 290mm at the rear, with the truck offering an approach angle of 29° and a break over angle of 34°. The wider

tyres and improved suspension provide a lighter ride across rough terrain. The bodywork has been extended to allow for the tyres and the truck is equipped with Arctic Trucks’ extended side steps, strengthened mud flaps and a 2” rear multifunction receiver hitch, for the fitment of tow balls, winches and rear-mounted steps.

Prices start from £47,999 CVOTR with a manual gearbox or £49,999 for the automatic and the AT35 can be ordered from May 3.

Ford launches first full e-LCV with E-Transit Ford may have come late to the party, but the firm’s E-Transit has been more than worth the wait. Dan Gilkes reports

T

he E-Transit range offers no less than 25 panel van, double-cab-in-van and chassis cab options from launch, has gross weights of 3.5-4.25 tonnes and features rear-wheel drive, with an integrated electric motor in the rear axle and independent rear suspension.

There is a 68kWh battery pack beneath the floor of the van, providing a WLTP driving range of up to 196 miles.

Customers can choose between maximum motor outputs of 135kW (180hp) or 198kW (265hp), though a more important figure is the 430Nm of instantly available torque that rapidly propels the vans along in almost total silence.

Indeed, the levels of noise and vibration suppression are particularly impressive, with the vans offering smooth, calm travel at all speeds.

There are three driving modes – Normal, Eco and Slippery. The van will start in Normal or Eco, depending on the last time it was used. If it was previously in Slippery, the driver will get a message to ensure that this is the desired mode before moving off. As the name suggests, Eco mode will reduce air 8 VANUSER • MAY 2022

conditioning performance and limit top speed to 120km/h. It also uses a different throttle pedal map, with smart acceleration control to reduce power use.

Slippery also moderates power delivery, to maximise traction. Though Eco mode does turn off the A/C, the driver can override that setting while still in Eco, to prevent windows misting up on cold and wet days.

The direction of travel is selected using a rotary gear selector, offering the usual P, R, N, D settings. This dial also has an L button in the centre, which in-

creases the level of brake force regeneration for more of a one-pedal driving experience in town. The vans will not come to a complete halt however, without using the brake pedal.

You can also influence the regeneration level using the brake pedal. A quick dab will bring in a regeneration setting between the off mode and having the L button pressed, while a second quick dab will activate the L setting, but only for that one time until you accelerate again. It comes in useful when you haven’t got L engaged, because you want to coast on a dual carriageway for instance, but you can then bring regen into play while slowing for a roundabout.

The E-Transit has both AC and rapid DC charging capability, with the charging point just below the Ford badge on the front grille. The AC charging can handle a full charge in around eight hours if you have 11kW available, while the DC rapid charging circuit can handle up to 115kW inputs, providing 15-80% charge in around half an hour on a suitable charger.

ProPower Onboard The vans can be had with Ford’s ProPower Onboard feature, which provides up to 2.3kW of power to various outlets in 12V or 240V settings. This will allow tradespeople to power tools on site, without having to carry a separate generator. It can also be used to run a fridge system for a temperature-controlled body and Ford’s approved bodybuilders and converters can tap into this power source for their conversions. continued on p10

Leader is no bargain basement specification though, as all E-Transits come with Electronic Air Temperature Control, Keyless Start, heated seats, Quickclear windscreen and heated mirrors. You also get Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, complete with 12” touchscreen, that offers twice the computing power of the SYNC 3 system.

Opt for the higher Trend trim and the vans come with a Connected Navigation System and voice control with embedded Amazon Alexa technology.

There is no shortage of ADAS systems either, with Euro NCAP already giving the vans a Gold Award for their driver assistance. Technologies on offer include Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian detection, Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Information with Lane Changing Warning and Aid, plus many more. You also get a 360° camera, to provide a birds-eye view around the van when manoeuvring.

All E-Transit models will be covered by a three-year/100,000-mile warranty, while the battery gets eightyears/100,000 miles of cover. Service intervals are once a year, but with unlimited mileage. Perhaps the biggest attraction for many operators though will be the price, with E-Transit starting at just £47,700, which is considerably less than many competitors.

While the E-Transit is undeniably an impressive van, it is just one component of the new Ford Pro offer. While many competitors use the word Pro to promote a professional approach to van operation, Ford says that Pro stands for

productivity. That includes everything that a van user needs to operate e-LCVs, including the vans, software, service, charging and finance.

“It’s not just the vehicle, it’s the whole eco system,” said Ted Cannis, CEO of Ford Pro. “Customers who have taken up this complete solution in the US are already saving around 10% in operating costs.”

Ford Pro Solutions A new team, called Ford Pro Solutions, will work with customers to determine exactly what they need to get up and running efficiently with an e-LCV fleet.

While Ford aims to launch five electric vans by 2024, covering all sectors of the market, the Ford Pro offer extends to other makes of van and is not Ford exclusive.

Ford purchased an EV charging specialist called electriphi and this business is at the core of Ford Pro Charging, helping customers to install EV charging equipment and to work with publicly available charging solutions where that is not possible. Ford Pro Software is another component of the solution, integrating telematics, charging and servicing into a range of productivity-boosting platforms.

“

While many competitors use the word Pro to promote a professional approach to van operation, Ford says that Pro stands for productivity.

“The E-Transit is a data centre,” said Cannis. “It’s like a mobile phone on wheels.”

Ford Pro Service has already been flagged, with the launch last year of Ford Liive uptime centres and the continued growth of dealer provided mobile service vans helping to keep customer vehicles on the roads. Though still relatively new, the systems behind Ford Pro Service are already showing positive results, keeping customer vans on the roads and reducing costly downtime. The final component is Ford Pro Financing, offering both vehicles and services, along with the option of full Ford Fleet Management.

Fiat's latest models move to Stellantis vans

F

iat Professional has become the fifth company to offer the mid-weight Stellantis van, in both diesel and electric versions. The Scudo and E-Scudo bring Fiat’s 1-tonne models into line with sister Stellantis firms Peugeot, Citroen and Vauxhall, plus the Toyota Proace that uses the same base vehicle.

The new models replace the Talento in the Fiat line-up, which was itself previously built around Renault’s Trafic.

This is far from the first time that Fiat has worked with the two French manufacturers, however. Fiat formed the Sevel partnership with Peugeot and Citroen in 1978, with the original Scudo being built on the same line as Peugeot Expert and Citroen Dispatch models at the Sevel Nord plant in northern France.

This new Scudo will be offered in short and long wheelbase panel van models, as a short or long wheelbase crew van and, with the EV driveline only, as a platform cab for conversion on the shorter chassis. Load volumes start at 5.3m3 rising to 6.1m3 for the bigger vans, while the crew models offer 3.2m3 and 4m3 respectively. All of the vans manage to carry in excess of 1,000kg, though some of the diesel models can manage up to 1,400kg. Both of the electric E-Scudos can handle a 1.0-tonne load.

Diesel Scudos are offered at 100hp and 120hp with a 1.5-litre MultiJet engine, or 145hp and 180hp if you opt for a 2.0-litre motor. The three lower outputs come with a six-speed manual gearbox, while the 145hp can also be optioned with an automatic transmission. The auto is standard with the range-topping 180hp engine. For the E-Scudo, there is a choice of 50kWh and 75kWh batteries, both of which drive through a 136hp (100kW) electric motor.

A Look Pack is included with the Business models, adding body-coloured bumpers, side strips and door handles. Indeed, the company will offer a range of trim packs, to allow customers to group together useful options and tailor the vans to their needs.

Both Scudo and E-Scudo vans are available to order in the UK and Fiat Professional has managed to secure build slots at the factory throughout this year, so should be able to supply early orders without too much delay.

That said, new orders, with more specific model demands, will have to face lead times of up to six months.

As mentioned, Fiat is now the fifth manufacturer to offer what is basical-

ly the same range of vans. So how will it differentiate itself from the other Stellantis companies and from Toyota? Stellantis UK director of LCV, Richard Chamberlain, believes that it will be Fiat Professional’s dealer network that makes the difference for customers.

The company currently has around 62 dealers across the UK, with more than 150 aftersales points. Of that number, around 65% are also heavy truck dealers, selling Iveco and DAF Trucks models. While these dealers don’t offer the High Street showrooms of a carbased light commercial outlet, they do deliver the extended operating hours expected by heavy truck customers.

It is this extended aftercare that will prove decisive for many customers he believes, particularly those businesses that operate around the clock and over longer distances.

Fiat Professional will complete its transition to Stellantis models this year, with the launch of a new E-Doblo, based on the smaller Peugeot/Citroen/Vauxhall van that will soon be built at the revitalised Ellesmere Port plant. The electric E-Doblo is expected in the summer, to be followed by diesel-powered models later in 2022.

Fiat will remain the only one of the multiple companies to continue to offer a Fiorino-sized van though. The company will upgrade the compact LCV to the Euro 6E emissions standard, but is unlikely to produce an electric version of the van. It hasn’t ruled out taking a version of the Ami commercial, that is expected from Citroen in the future though, if there is enough demand for a compact e-LCV from customers.

Citan set for late Summer launch M

ercedes-Benz Vans will launch a new Citan compact van range this summer. The van will be offered in two body lengths, in two trim levels and with a choice of a single diesel engine or a full electric driveline. Though again built in cooperation with Renault’s Kangoo, the new Citan incorporates plenty of Mercedes-Benz technology, not least the full MBUX infotainment system with its “Hey Mercedes” voice control.

Citan will only be offered as a van this time, with no people carrying version, as Mercedes has launched a T-Class MPV based on the same platform. Some details have still to be set in stone, but early indications are that Mercedes will have a 1.5-litre diesel engine with an output of 95hp. There will also be a full electric eCitan for the first time, boasting a 47kWh battery, that should be capable of a driving range of around 177 miles. A DC rapid charging capability will allow a 1080% charge in just 40 minutes.

The vans will be offered in L1 and L2 layouts in Progressive and Premium trims. Expect internal load volumes of around 3.3m3 and 4.2m3 respectively. Progressive will include air conditioning, a full width bulkhead, Eco Start/Stop for the diesel model, a multi-function steering wheel and the MBUX multimedia system with 7” touchscreen. This incorporates USB-C charging, Bluetooth, a WiFi hotspot, smartphone integration and a DAB radio.

Standard safety and security will include Active Brake Assist, Adaptive ESP, Attention Assist, a parking pack including reversing camera, cruise control and an integrated alarm system.

The Premium vans add an interior design pack, LED headlamps, front fog lights, metallic paint and colour-coded bumpers, plus wireless mobile charging.

side assistance. There will no doubt be a longer battery warranty, currently eight years on the eSprinter. The Citan will also come with three years of free intelligent vehicle monitoring, that can be used for maintenance management, remote vehicle diagnostics, automatic software updates and vehicle location and status information.

Van User has had the chance to drive a left-hand drive diesel Citan in Premium trim. The immediate impression is of a far higher quality interior to the previous van, with superb noise and vibration suppression. The interior resembles many of Mercedes passenger car models, with the familiar touchscreen and steering wheel controls providing access to numerous system menus.

The diesel engine delivers a decent amount of acceleration, with a smooth-shifting six-speed manual gearbox. Oddly, the pedals are fairly offset in the left-hand drive van, which is not something that we remember from the previous right-hand drive Citan. Certainly though, the new model offers a very comfortable working environment.

UK sales will start in July, with first deliveries expected in September.

The eCitan may be slightly behind the diesel and full specifications and pricing will be revealed nearer the time.

ROAD TO ZERO

VW and BP join forces on rapid charging Volkswagen and fuel company bp have launched a strategic partnership to roll-out rapid charging across Europe. The first phase of the agreement will see 4,000 of VW’s Flexpole 150kW charging units installed at bp’s Aral sites in Germany and at bp retail sites across the UK over the next 24 months. The Flexpole units can be directly connected to a low voltage grid, removing the need for a dedicated substation and costly construction work.

Charger locations will be integrated into VW Group navigation systems, making it easier for drivers to locate them, though they will be available to drivers of any make of EV, through the bp pulse network. “bp has served customers on-the-go for decades in Europe and across the world,” said Emma Delaney, bp’s executive vice president, customers and products.

“With the transition to electric vehicles well

underway in Europe, we want to provide fast, reliable charging and convenience to EV drivers on-the-go. We are delighted to announce this partnership with VW. The flexible battery-based chargers will accelerate bp’s fast charging network roll-out at our well-located sites in Europe. We are planning up to 4,000 additional charge points in Germany and the UK in the near term - a turbo-boost for our fast-charging network in these countries.”

ZipCharge launches EV infrastructure solution ZipCharge has announced the GoHub portable EV charging station, for shared public use. The GoHub provides a community solution that can be installed anywhere, at a much lower cost, to make any parking space a charging spot. The GoHub includes five or 10 ZipCharge Go EV powerbanks, that are housed and recharged internally, before being wheeled out to charge vehicles.

The powerbanks can be rented 24 hours a day,

with the option to reserve a unit in an app online. As the registered user approaches the GoHub, the door opens automatically. The driver can then take the charger from its dock, wheel it to the vehicle and plug-in. When finished, they simply return the Go unit to the GoHub for recharging.

Volta to launch smaller models Volta Trucks is set to produce 7.5 and 12-tonne full electric trucks, building on the 16-tonne model that is currently undergoing final evaluation prior to customer deliveries later this year and the 18-tonner due for mid-2023. Designed in Warwick, the lighter Volta Zero trucks closely resemble the larger models, with their distinctive lowered cab, central driving position and massive 220° all-round visibility.

pected for customer trials in 2024, with series production due for 2025. The company aims to sell over 27,000 full electric trucks a year by 2025 and already has orders for 1,470 vehicles with DB Schenker and 1,000 trucks from Petit Forestier. Designed from the ground up, the Volta Zero trucks aim to offer a driving range of around 125 miles.

The number of public electric vehicle charging points rose by 33% over the last 12 months, according to recent Department of Transport figures.

There are now more than 30,290 public chargers across the UK. More importantly, the number of rapid chargers grew by 5,500, or 29% over the last 12 months.

The picture varies depending on region, with London enjoying a 9.4% rise in charging points in the first three months of this year, closely followed by the West Midlands, at 9.3%. At the other end of the scale, Northern Ireland saw an increase of just 0.9% over the same quarter.

Ford adds second e-LCV As Ford finally brings its E-Transit to market (pg 8), the company is already looking forward to the launch of the E-Transit Custom next year.

There are no details yet, but this picture shows the light signature of the van, which will be fully revealed on May 9. Ford Pro is promising a further four electric vans by 2024.

Evios joins charging sector

Gridserve opens Compact Electric Forecourt Gridserve has opened a Compact Electric Forecourt on the A47 to the south-east of Norwich.

Building on the success of the company’s first site near Braintree, the Norwich Forecourt has 36 EV chargers, including 22 high powered rapid chargers, offering up to 350kW of power. The site more than doubles the number of rapid chargers in the region.

As well as vehicle charging, the site has a Costa Coffee, M&S Food and WHSmith outlets, along-

side a team of impartial EV gurus, who can discuss vehicle leasing and charging options. There are also super-fast WiFi and bookable meeting rooms on offer to business users.

Gridserve is investing £1bn rolling out 100 EV charging forecourts across the UK, with the next site already under construction at Gatwick Airport. Additional sites have been granted planning permission in Uckfield, Gateshead, Plymouth and Stevenage, with 30 more under development.

British company Evios has launched the Evios One electric vehicle charger, offering a jargon-free user interface, large colour screen and a smartphone app to make it easier for users to control their vehicle charging. The unit can integrate with energy tarrifs, to charge at offpeak times and can support separate user profiles, making it ideal for shared residential or business parking areas.

Evios was formed by David Martell, founder and formerly CEO of Chargemaster, which went on to become one of the UK’s biggest EV charging networks.

“From the outset we have sought to provide a unique combination of intuitive functionality and low running costs, helping to make EV ownership more hassle-free,” he said.

STAYING IN CONTROL Telematic technology can lead to substantial savings, as Kevin Bull of provider ABAX UK explains.

T

ight margins are due to get even tighter for many in the construction sector, with further predicted rises in material costs following soaring prices in 2021 and the introduction of new legislation, such as the reform of red diesel usage. But smart use of technology can contribute to much needed financial savings, according to telematics firm ABAX UK. “It’s understandable that many businesses may be feeling ill-prepared or concerned about the rising threats surrounding increasing fuel prices, particularly after the challenges thrown at us all through 2020 and 2021,” said Kevin Bull, commercial director. “But there are ways that control can be taken back and savings made, thanks to technology.”

Telematic tracking devices can be installed in vehicles, on machinery and on tools, to monitor their usage, track emissions and plot their whereabouts, with all machine data available via one system, using solutions like ABAX Smart Connect.

One area offering potential savings from the use of tracking technology is engine idling. ABAX reports that, according to manufacturer Caterpillar, construction equipment idle time can be as much as 40-50% of total opera-

tion time. This is often unavoidable, but many find that it can be reduced and with rising fuel costs a reduction can equate to significant savings.

For vans, weight, driving style and maintenance all affect fuel economy.

ABAX claims that an unnecessary 45kg in the vehicle, can reduce mpg by 1%.

While idling can also have a significant impact on a vehicle’s fuel economy, excessive speed is the biggest fuel-guzzling factor. Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration, and braking) wastes fuel, not to mention leading to increased cost of maintenance, tyre replacement and cost of insurance.

Telematics technology can highlight idling time per vehicle, calculate driving scores and the behaviour of each driver, provide speeding alerts and allowing van fleet managers and business owners to identify areas where improvements could be made.

In 2020, the cost of theft and vandalism to the UK construction industry was in excess of £800m.

Theft of vans has been increasing over the last five years, with more than 8,000 vehicles stolen each year, while thefts from vans has also become a massive problem, with over 28,000 incidents reported last year.

As Isuzu sales edge towards higher trim models, the base Utility specification stays true to the company’s roots, says Dan Gilkes

T

raditionally, around 30% of Isuzu’s D-Max sales have been what it calls the Business line, which includes the hard-working Utility models. Just 20% were Adventure models and 50% the mid-range All-Purpose pick-ups.

That is changing, however. As the number of pick-up manufacturers competing in the UK market has dropped, so Isuzu’s sales have moved slightly upmarket. Around 45% of sales are now All-Purpose trucks like the DL20 and DL40. Up to 30% are Adventure models and just 25% are still the Utility trim vehicles.

To complicate things further, Isuzu has just launched an additional six variants into the range, mainly in the lower trim Business line-up. This includes the option of an automatic transmission for the first time on Utility extended and double-cab trucks, along with the DL20 extended cab.

In addition, Isuzu is making the rear differential lock available as an option on all Utility models now, bringing them into line with higher trim pick-ups.

Powertrain All D-Max models are powered by the firm’s Euro 6D version of the 1.9-litre diesel engine. This delivers a healthy 164hp and a rather reserved 360Nm of torque. There are six-speed manual and automatic transmissions on offer, with the latest auto making gear 26 VANUSER • MAY 2022

changes up to 25% faster. Around 30% of D-Max buyers go the automatic transmission route, though only the manual box has been available in Utility models until recently.

Drive is taken through a shift-onthe-fly four-wheel drive system, with high and low ranges on offer. As mentioned, a rear differential lock is now being offered on the workhorse Utility specification, as well as the higher trim models, to enhance the truck’s offroad capabilities.

Load carrying capacity All D-Max trucks can carry over 1.0-tonnes in the back and all bar the 4x2 single cab can tow a 3.5-tonne trailer. Equally importantly, all of the Isuzu models have an unladen weight of less than 2,040kg. This means that they are not restricted to goods vehicle speeds on single and dual carriageways, but can legally keep pace with passenger cars.

The D-Max is a five-star Euro NCAP holder, thanks in part to numerous airbags and those ADAS offerings. The infotainment is perhaps less advanced, but you still get a DAB radio with Bluetooth connectivity.

On the road The D-Max arrived a week after the 170hp Ranger that is also featured in this issue. It was surprising to find that with a similar 164hp on tap, it felt considerably less willing to get up and go.

This is in part due to the considerably lower torque figure, but must also be down to lower gearing, as first will barely get the wheels rolling before you are looking to change up to second.

Once on the move however, there are few complaints and the D-Max Utility is more than capable of covering the miles between job sites. The seats may not be the best on the market, doing little to soak up the inevitable bumps of an unladen pick-up. However, the D-Max is all-day usable and a real workhorse for those that need their pick-up to get a job done.

Conclusion While it is perfectly understandable that many owner drivers and SMEs might prefer a few more creature comforts, or a more stylish set of wheels on their drive at night, there is still a market for a harder wearing Utility truck. Isuzu has had to broaden its appeal over the last few years, moving into new markets at the top of the sector. It is good to see however, that it has not forgotten what many of its customers really need from a pick-up.

As with many in the market, the company is suffering with supply of new vehicles and could have sold far more than its on-paper figures suggest last year. Already in 2022 March sales are an incredible 54.4% up on 2021, reflecting first quarter growth of 42.8%.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the range-topping V-Cross has risen to become the best-selling model in the D-Max line-up. Yet, for many, a Utility double-cab would be all the truck that they really need to get the job done.

WORKING TRUCK As an all-terrain workhorse, the Ranger Wolftrak is not just a new coat of paint, says Dan Gilkes

I

f you want a hard-working Ford pick-up, look no further than the steel-wheeled Ranger XL or its slightly higher spec XLT cousin.

There is certainly no need to seek the luxury of a Limited trim, or a Wildtrak.

But what if you want a pick-up that can handle difficult terrain, without looking like a back-to-basics model? Step forward the Ranger Wolftrak special edition.

Powertrain Based on the popular XLT model, the Wolftrak is offered with the 170hp version of Ford’s 2.0-litre EcoBlue diesel engine, backed up by 420Nm of torque.

There is a choice of six-speed manual or 10-speed automatic transmissions.

The truck gets the selectable shifton-the-fly four-wheel drive system and an electronically-locking rear differential, for maximum traction, while riding on a set of 17” black alloys with chunkier all-terrain tyres.

Load carrying capacity As with all Rangers bar the high-riding Raptor, the Wolftrak model can still easily haul a tonne of payload and pull a 3.5-tonne trailer. As part of that hard-working job description, it comes as standard with a protective sprayin bed liner to protect the back of the pick-up.

You also get a heavy-duty tubular sports bar that can be used to support load restraint or other accessories and Ford offers a load bed cover or an Aeroklas canopy as options on the Wolftrak model.

In the cab There is a choice of Sea Grey or the Conquer Grey paint scheme seen here, which is accented by those black wheels and matt black front skid plates, grille, wheel lip mouldings, mirror housings, door and pick-up handles, rear bumper and that sports bar.

In the cab you get the standard XLT cloth upholstery with leather-clad steering wheel and gear lever. Standard kit includes an 8” touchscreen with Ford’s SYNC 2.5 infotainment system, including DAB radio, satellite navigation and Ford Pass Connect modem. The truck also comes with auto lights and wipers, electric windows and mirrors, a host of airbags for driver and passengers and a good selection of ADAS driver assistance systems.

On the road The 170hp is something of a sweet spot in the EcoBlue range, offering plenty of power and torque, without requiring regular trips to the fuel pumps. The Wolftrak feels more than rapid enough, yet delivers a relaxed cruise. That said,

those Pirelli Scorpion off-road tyres do make their presence heard at speed.

Conclusion You certainly can’t accuse Ford of not offering pick-up buyers enough choice.

However, while special editions are often simply all about the looks, the Wolftrak gives more than a nod to driving performance, particularly when offroad.

If you need to drive on forest tracks, across muddy construction sites or simply move about on the farm, but want to do so in some style, the Wolftrak has a lot to recommend it.

Relax and enjoy the Trafic

I

t is no secret that the recently updated Renault Trafic will itself be surpassed as we move into next year, with a further development of the popular French midweight already planned. However, the latest Trafic took a big step forward from its predecessors, particularly inside the cab, so we thought we’d put one to the test for a few months.

Our long-term test van is a short wheelbase Sport, which puts it three steps up the specification ladder, above Business and Business+, but below the range-topping Sport+. In all honesty, the van wants for very little, with standard full LED headlights and daytime running lights, electric windows and folding mirrors, air conditioning and the Easy Link Navigation system, with its 8” touchscreen, DAB radio, Bluetooth and smartphone integration.

That short wheelbase body offers 5.8m3 of load volume, with 2,537mm of load length at the floor. That can be extended to 3,750mm with the loadthrough hatch in the bulkhead. The short wheelbase Sport and Sport+ models can only be had in SL28 form, offering a payload of 896kg with this engine and gearbox. If you need to carry more weight, the SL30 can handle over a tonne, but only comes in Business trim.

We’ve got the mid-range 150hp version of Renault’s 2.0-litre dCi diesel engine under the bonnet, which pushes out a healthy 350Nm of torque. This drives the front wheels through a slick-shifting six-speed manual gearbox, though you can opt for an automated EDC transmission if preferred.

The van is said to offer up to 40.9mpg and there’ll be more on that as we fill 34 VANUSER • MAY 2022

up more regularly.

The engine pulls well and is extremely smooth, resulting in an unexpectedly refined cruising ability. If you have lots of miles to cover, there are few more relaxing vans to make the journey in. The driver’s seat offers adjustable height and lumbar support, with a fold-down armrest adding to the comfort levels.

of our early miles have been at night and those standard LED headlights are a real standout feature. Without blinding other road users, they offer superb illumination and Renault’s promise of 20% enhanced visibility is totally believable. Good to see that they are not an option that few drivers will ever experience.

Unfortunately, not all of the technology has been so faultless. Our van features the 8” Easy Link navigation screen and when connecting my phone, a message popped up asking if I would accept an over-the-air update to the system. I did and then rapidly wished I hadn’t, as it killed the entire infotainment system. That resulted in a very quiet journey to and from the airport for a launch and the van has now had to go back to Renault for a re-boot.

Electronic teething problems aside, I’m looking forward to a very comfortable three months ahead.
