When did you last check your motorhome weight? Ministry figures suggest up to 80% of motorhomes may be operating overloaded!
Drive an overloaded motorhome and you not only risk a fine, you also risk your insurance and the safety of you and your passengers!
When looking to buy your next motorhome, insist on an accurate, up -to-date weight ticket! The brochure may state a MIRO or payload allowance, but these f igures can be out by as much as 5% (average 125kg).
This is more likely to be against you than in your favour, so it is always recommended that you visit a weighbridge to check your vehicle’s weight.
Need to uprate to carry more payload?
If you think you might have a payload issue, we can help. SvTech is able to increase/uprate the payload allowance on many makes and models.
Behind the scenes of every SvTech uprate, testing of a vehicle is carried out to create a ministry recognised test report, which is then use to cover subsequent uprates. This report and testing is vital in supporting an uprate, and is a legal requirement. Do not be fooled into thinking it’s just a paperwork exercise, as offered by others.
Reaching 70? Need to consider downrating?
SvTech can downrate your motorhome to 3500kg should you not pass, or wish to take, your medical. You must first weigh the motorhome to find out what payload you will have available at 3500kg . For further guidance on downrating please visit our website at www.svtech.co.uk/motor-home-downrates
To promote road safety, SvTech designed a free -to-use, Load Distribution Analysis (LDA) program which helps the user to know their likely laden weight and how best to position their goods about the vehicle to avoid an axle overload . Please visit our website www.svtech.co.uk/lda to find out how you can stay safely within your vehicle limits.
For any questions regarding these matters, please contact 01772 621800 or email, webenquiries@svtech.co.uk
At long last Spring is on the horizon, let’s hope that we have seen the last of the wind and the rain that so many of you have experienced recently.

Time is running out if you want to keep the Group going. You only have to the end of this month to get your names into the Head Office, so please get your thinking caps on. If no one comes forward before the end of March, then COM will take over the splitting of the Group members and the assets of the Group between other Groups. Com is already looking to sort something out to save some of the rallies, but if we get a new committee, then the rallies will be run by the new committee.

LeoBay is quite unique as it is a campsite with fitting facilities, so if there’s that little something you need doing from replacing a bulb to a complete conversion we do it all. Our experience goes back 40 years. Our core experience is in auto electrics and vehicle security as well as vehicle diagnostics, we use factory diagnostic software to solve your problems. Trained in both vehicle and mains voltages we can also inspect and test your mains hook up too! Gas that’s no problem either! Now there’s a service that makes life simple, so next time you need help, come and stay at LeoBay, a nice cuppa on arrival, we will sort your problems while you relax on our 1st class site. There’s even a courtesy vehicle to use during your stay at LeoBay!
LeoBay is a site in a million, completely built by us and independent, so all are welcome whether you’re a club member
or not. We have drawn on our 25 years as motorhomers, collating all the best bits from the many sites we have visited over the years. The pitches are all wide hardstanding, with a 10amp hook up and your own grass area to spread out on, the site sits up on a hill over looking the sea with amazing views. On site facilities include a unique summer kitchen, where everyone can chat, relax and eat under cover, there’s a barbeque and pizza oven for you to use, or sit and relax by the open fire with a bottle or two. We like to make sure you’re warm and comfortable so the shower block is heated, with two large rooms, and to top it off the gardens are just splendid. Pets are welcome; the dog walks along the shore are great, there’s plenty of wildlife to watch. So as you can see it’s well worth a visit at just £25 per night all in.
25 YEARS OLD AND STILL GROWING!
Northern Ireland Group celebrates Silver Anniversey. Dessie Ross reports
Group committee 2025
The 22nd January 2000 saw the inception of the first properly constituted motorhome Group in Northern Ireland, when some 22 people congregated at The Ramble Inn, Antrim for their inaugural meeting of what was to become the N.I. Group of the Motorcaravanners Club. It appears from records that one of the key reasons for affiliating to the MCC,based in England, was to secure insurance which was proving to be expensive for a small start-up Group. Being under the auspices of the MCC provided insurance, assurance and benefits accruing from being part of a much larger entity. Dessie Donaldson was the first appointed Chairman of the fledgling Group, a role he would fulfil for about one year before leaving and reverting, it is believed, to caravanning.
William McCullough replaced Dessie and remained in the role for some four years before becoming a Council of Management member and being replaced by David Davidson who served for a similar period of time. The committees of those formative years were industrious and hard working, laying the foundations for an extremely successful Group. The late Robert Strain followed David Davidson as Chairperson and continued to grow the Group and even organised a continental rally. During Robert’s

tenure the Group celebrated it’s 10th anniversary.
In 2011, I became chairman for the next five years. One of the highlights of this period was hosting, for the first time, the Club's National Rally in 2014, attracting a record attendance of members from overseas Groups to Ireland.
Following on as Chairman was Joe Little. In June 2018 our Group embarked on a challenging 625-mile sponsored walk along the entirety of the Ulster Way and raised a magnificent sum of £17,820 which was donated to the air ambulance.
Joe remained Chairman throughout the Covid period and was replaced by Joe McClune as Chair for one year before David Kyle-Ewing stepped up and was in office for two
incumbent Sam Arlow (2024).
The 25th (Silver) anniversary of our Group will be celebrated throughout the year and began last month at the annual dinner dance, held at the Ross Park Hotel, Kells, Co. Antrim (see pictures above). There, some 100 members and friends enjoyed a memorable weekend. A beautiful 25th anniversary cake also marked the occasion.

and retention. It’s a status and reputation we are determined our rallies this year will receive one.
While being the most recently formed Group, and as such the 'baby' of the Club, this has not prevented the NI Group from being one of the most successful, frequently vying for and often winning the most prestigious awards for member recruitment and retention. It’s a status and reputation we are determined to maintain. We have this year purchased Shamrock shaped window stickers which all 316 members received in their new 2025 handbook. Anyone visiting one of our rallies this year will receive one. Look forward to another great year ahead in this great Club.

STAR
TURNS
Buying advice from Gentleman Jack. Panel van conversions behind the three-pointed star
Synonymous with prestige and solidity, Mercedes-Benz has been building motorised light commercial vehicles since 1896 [B]. They started to gain popularity among motorcaravan converters in the 1970’s and later the Bremen Mercedes cemented the relationship. In the UK, most underpinned coachbuilts, notably by Auto-Trail. 1995 saw the launch of the game-changing Sprinter which has been more popular than its predecessors as a PVC (panel van conversion) motorcaravan [A] Frustratingly, at the time of writing, no volume converter was offering a motorcaravan on the all-electric
powertrain version of the Sprinter, or on its smaller stablemates. Thus, all our featured Mercs have (solely) turbo-diesel power, not even any hybrids!
All runners offer standing height when on-site, some courtesy of a factory fitted high-top, some via an elevating-roof, and one with both! Over the last decade Mercedes have prioritised two areas of development. First in ‘driver assist’ features, and secondly regarding IT
connectivity. The latter is perhaps more important for multi-drop delivery drivers than pilots of motorcaravans. Whatever, Mercs do drive well [C]. Sprinter is available with a transverse or longitudinallymounted engine [D] and in front, rear, or all-wheel drive. That said, not all options are available on every featured motorcaravan. Sprinter is narrower than the ubiquitous SEVEL competitor, a result of which is that it is difficult to include
a transverse bed for all but the vertically-challenged. Hymer’s ‘workaround’ the problem is to include two moulded extension panels in the side walls, one at either end of the rear bed [E]. These have been cleverly executed and integrate so well with the existing coachwork, that many prospective purchasers don’t realise that they are a retrofit. Roof-beds [F] do not usually suffer from length restrictions, but they can be quite challenging to
access and to exit from…especially for nocturnal visits to the loo.
Prospective purchasers who intend sleeping ‘up there’ should kick-off their shoes and see how well they manage access and egress in the showroom before committing to purchase. In the author’s mind he is young and lithe, but in reality, resembles a beached whale!
the M-Star’s galley replicates a domestic home one…equipmentwise. Speaking of Auto-Sleeper’s finest, it also arrives with by far the largest comfort station [I], unsurprising really, as the base vehicle is longer than the rest!
‘Side kitchens’ are de-rigeur [G-Hymer] and [H-Westfalia]. All are cleverly designed, though only
Point to ponder Merc-based motorcaravans frequently cost more than similar conversions on alternative (comparative) base vehicles.

AUTO-SLEEPER M-STAR
Auto-Sleeper is our longest established motorcaravan converter dating back to the very early 1960’s when founder Calverley Trevelyan converted a Morris J2 for a family touring holiday in France. M-Star is their first Sprinter PVC, perhaps a natural progression from the award-winning Boxer/Ducato

based examples. In common with the latter, the Broadway Crew has opted for using the M-B factoryglazed window van as their base. This features flush fitting bonded-in Athermic glass panes for a more fluid automotive look to the exterior. Huge unobstructed habitation door aperture is opposite the spacious comfort station, itself in two halves. On entering there is the swivel-bowl loo with cupboards above, to the rear of which is a walk-in shower compartment which also contains a vanity basin. Superbly well-equipped galley is adjacent to the side door and boasts a domestic-style cooker with dual-fuel hob, a grill and a separate gas-fired oven. Across the aisle is the domestic-style two-door fridge-freezer with 230V microwave above. Hinged fold-down flaps offer oodles of worktop. Concave highlevel locker doors provide an airy ambience in the lounge.

Hymer is a long established German motorcaravan converter. In Blighty it is more associated with palatial ‘A’-Class (integral) coachbuilts. That said, its first motorcaravan was a PVC, based on a 1961 Borgward B611. Borgward…there’s a blastfrom-the-past. Anyway, digression over…the first thing that needs to be pointed out is that although the stated starting price is as above, to the pictured specification and with the 170bhp motor and automatic gearbox, the RRP price rises to just over £130,000, though currently some UK dealers have brand new unregistered (2024) examples to the same spec for £96,000. Forward halfdinette combines with the swivelled cab pews to make a practical seating area which – crucially – provides an additional brace of travel seats. Midships is home to the offside kitchen and nearside washroom, both of which are ahead of a

RP REBEL RWD
It seems as though it was only yesterday when this highly-regarded UK converter launched their first motorcaravans for sale. Not true, it’s over a decade since proprietors Steven and Amanda Young surprised everyone at an NEC motorcaravan show. After a fruitless search for a suitable hospitality vehicle to support the family’s motor sport hobbies (notably motorbikes and go-karts) they decided to build their own. Unlike the other featured converters, RP has opted to concentrate solely on the Sprinter. Rebel models are rear wheel drive, Rebellion variants boast all-wheel drive. The centrally-located nearside kitchen and offside wardrobe are cut away at their trailing ends to allow a useful extension to the seat squabs. There is a goodly amount of flexibility concerning the triple-aspect rear lounge. It can be specified as two inward-facing settees, or as a full ‘U’-shape. In addition, one or two rear travel seats are extra-cost options. These fold-away under the seat squabs for relaxed ‘lounging’. The downside of this is that their inclusion does steal valuable storage space. A longer version is also available, as is one with a slide-out’.
Go for it

• RP…small enough to care, big enough to cope
• Direct sales offer a bespoke element (within reason)

WESTFALIA
JULES VERNE
Mention contemporary Mercedes Benz motorcaravans and most folk will think of something based on a Sprinter. Although criminally underused by UK converters, the smaller Vito is a popular choice among European-based converters of the genre of motorcaravans usually referred to as ‘campervans’ or ‘poptops’. Westphalia-based Westfalia (now part of the Rapido Group) began by making horse-drawn carts in the 1840’s. These were a far cry from their sophisticated and clever current range of leisure vehicles. The old adage that, ‘most can build a good big motorcaravan, but it takes real skill and ingenuity to build a good small one’, has never been so

A GREAT WAY TO START THE SEASON
Frances and Michael Howorth spend the first few days of the show walking the exhibition halls at the NEC to seek out what is new and hot and find out, what is not
February at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre saw the 2025 edition of the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome Show take place over six action-packed days.
We think the February show is a great way for seasoned adventurers and novices alike, to kick off the year. The 2025 offering did not disappoint with over 500
motorcaravans on display, cuttingedge camping equipment, exclusive show-only discounts and product launches.
Billed as the UK’s largest start of year showcase of motorhomes and campervans all under one roof, it is the baby sister to the October Motorhome & Caravan Show. Over 420 exhibitors displayed the very best in motorhomes, campervans and outdoor gear.
The Erwin Hymer Group made its much-heralded return to the show, showcasing models across its Eldiss, Xplore, Adria and Euro-Mobil ranges. They were joined by regulars that included Coachman, Bailey of Bristol and Marquis Leisure.
They were joined by regulars that its van conversion. The Schumacher
It was hard to miss the buzz around the Robeta stand in hall 5. The firm had chosen this show to premiere its Schumacher Edition van conversion. The Schumacher is built in conjunction with F1 Star Ralf Schumacher who has brought to the van many ideas he first encountered in the superyachts he has owned.

We admired the designers clever use of what Schumacher calls a floating bed. Hidden away during the day having been raised up into the roof of the van, it is attached to the ceiling with only four-point steel cables without any additional guides or supports. At night it moves vertically and extends horizontally at the touch of a button to become a full size double bed. We were not surprised to learn it had a price tag of £280,000.
Adria Supertwin
Another premier to catch our eye was also converted using the Sprinter as a base. The first van from Adria on a Mercedes-Benz with all-wheel drive was unveiled as the Adria Supertwin. We were impressed by the designer’s use of space, that combined plenty of functionality with exceptional levels of comfort. It is bound to appeal to motorcaravanners seeking off road adventures in a van known for its robust engineering, durability, performance and safety.
Bailey of Bristol unveiled their latest addition to their awardwinning Adamo range. Introduced as the Adamo XL it is built for adventurers who crave extra space and comfort. These three 8m-long models built on a 4,250kg Ford chassis, make them ideal for extended touring and longer getaways.
German-built Eura Mobil displayed the new 2025 Mercedes A-class Integra GT and the Xtura, a 4x4 Mercedes 190hp automatic all-terrain coach-built van that offers up to 30 days off-grid touring capability.
Italian built, but designed for the UK, Rimor displayed a range of family-friendly models, including the all-new Fiat-based Sarus range. Their Ford-based Kilig 77 with a rear lounge and two drop-down beds was also getting a lot of attention.
UK importer Motorhomes and Caravans Limited of Hull (M and C Ltd) was offering an exclusive 'M and C show pack' with exceptional value for money on many extra essentials, maybe that is what caused all the buzz!
Ever since we started covering these shows for magazines, we have harboured a serious respect for the
PR Leisure group and the Rebel and Rebellion campervans designed, built and sold by Steve and Jaye Young. We may not be able to afford one, but we never fail to stop by their stand if only to drool on their carpet!
Now I have another confession to make. I have been known to talk to pieces of kit on our van. Indeed, when they don’t work I am prone to shouting at them, even verbally abusing them, but generally to no avail. But if I had one of RP’s new Rebel vans, I might have to moderate my language because this one actually listens to its owner! RP’s new Smart Assist system allows you talk to your van and control features such as lighting and heating. No longer will you need to search for switches or controls. Instead you can just say out loud, “lights off” and out they go! Or “put

heating on” and suddenly the van is warm enough in the morning to contemplate getting up. It has its own internal e-sim imbedded into its software and as well as providing feedback to the vehicle’s owner, both by email and through the app, the systems can talk to RP Customer Support. It can monitor habitation functions such as the water system, heater, boiler, airconditioning, fridge and lighting. This helps avoid typical problems such as flat batteries or the fridge door being left open. Smart Assist can make your driving experience more comfortable, owners can check emails, use the high-definition camera and listen to music.
Accessories
Not everyone walking the halls is looking to buy a new vehicle. For many it is the offerings of accessory vendors that are the major attraction. For those manufacturers
and vendors, the show provides the perfect place for launches and this year there was an impressive amount of new products. One that really impressed us was the all new 2 in1 heater from Truma. The CombiNeo promises endless showers and instant heating. The proviso on the word endless assumes you carry enough water on board. Its innovative continuous water heater principle provides endless hot water, regardless of location and number of people, even away from campsites. Another decisive advantage is that hot water is available in just 3 minutes. It can be operated with both gas and electricity, is particularly quiet and is also emission-free. Lighter than the current versions sold by Truma, the good news is that if and
when you need to upgrade or change out, the new one has the same compact footprint.
New heaters were not the only new offering from Truma. They chose this show to launch the second generation of their Aventa product range. The new roofmounted air conditioning system operates particularly quietly. The system's low total weight, made possible by the installation of new technologies, is a highlight. They now weigh up to 18% less than the previous model. In addition, the variable compressor ensures better cooling performance and, in combination with the revised Night Mode, quiet nights.
We also liked a new water purification unit from Watersprint. As more and more motorcaravanners become adventurous heading off the beaten track it can be difficult to source a supply of clean potable water. Install this Ultraviolet C LED powered device and you could fill new one has the same compact footprint.
Truma's CombiNeo
up from a fast-flowing stream in the mountains and enjoy water that has been disinfected. The powerful force of UVC light kills off bacteria and viruses without involving the use of toxic chemicals. Compact and very frugal when it comes to power, the device costs around £650 and can be easily fitted to almost any van.
We always enjoy walking around the Fiamma stand. It contains a myriad of goodies that include awnings, privacy rooms, bike carriers and accessories for motorhomes, campervans and minivans. Their new and improved water pump offering has merged the benefits of the Aqua 8 with those of the Aqua F Pumps. The result is an all new Aqua 8F Pump that has reduced dimensions, better flow rate and is now KTW approved. We also liked the new version of the COB (chip on board) LED lighting strips which now have a much warmer glow.
As well as all the leading leisure vehicles ready to step into and compare all the wonderful gadgets,
the show featured a dedicated camping hall. It was crammed with the newest and coolest of tents, awnings, trailer tents, roof tents and camping gear. Anyone looking to pitch-up and embrace the great outdoors for the 2025 season could explore equipment from outdoors suppliers like Vango, Coleman, Kampa, Outwell, PJ Outdoors, Tent Box and RoofBunk.
And beyond
Going beyond the displays of campervans and motorhomes, the show also allowed visitors to immerse themselves in a different hands-on experience. Hall 5 featured watersports in a dedicated pool where many tried their hand at free paddleboarding and kayaking sessions led by experts. Over in Hall 4, the Adventure Camping Zone showcased lightweight tents designed for mountaineering, backpacking and cycle touring. Active explorers made good use of the climbing wall and brand-new
water purification unit
caving feature, providing a unique way to delve deeper into the outdoors.
The Inspiration Theatre in Hall 2 is always great place to take a rest from walking the halls. It is a place for travel enthusiasts and we never tire of listening to talks on breathtaking destinations. This year these featured Scotland, Portugal and Norway. The talks given by fellow travel guide authors Highlands 2 Hammock’s Gemma & Campbell, and our Caravan Writers Guild colleague, the travel writer Marcus Leach. No fuss travel-expert, Robbie Roams, the paddleboarder Jo Mosely, Wandering Bird’s Kat Bird, and author, Martin Dorey, all gave good accounts and kept us entertained with their unmissable road trip stories.
At other times cooking demonstrations from campingchef Mark Bonito, Vanlife Eats and television chef Kwoklyn Wan filled the area around the Inspiration Theatre with wafts of good food >>
Watersprint's
that made us feel hungry. Those seeking more practical advice headed up to the Advice Hub and Cafe in Hall 3, where free advice, essential tips for travelling with pets and insights from top outdoor writers, influencers and bloggers were on offer to get them roadready.
Because the show straddles half term, Hall 1 is always a hive of activity and if we are truthful, a little noisy. But that is understandable
because complete with a Beachside Cafe, and its very own helter skelter, it is always full of folk eager for summer. It was fun to watch as families got stuck into sandcastlebuilding as well as sitting back and relaxing. And that might be one of the reasons this show is a success. With so much to explore, it never fails to live up to its promise of 'something for adventurers of all ages and interests.'
With no other show like it, we
think the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show is the perfect place and platform to explore the latest trends shaping outdoor travel, from sustainable camping solutions to pet-friendly vehicle setups. It gives us and our fellow showgoers the chance to meet manufacturers, try out groundbreaking gadgets and get a first look at eco-conscious travel accessories. And if you are in the market to buy, that is an invaluable experience!

Deadline: 5th of the month for inclusion in the following month's magazine
Our First meeting of the year was held at Roydon. 17 Motorhomes in total all Anglia except for one visitor from Essex. Friday night we met in the hall for soup (Tomato or Stilton & Broccoli) and a French stick. The soup was delicious and a number of members went up for seconds. Ben & Annette then went round and took everyone’s order for the following nights fish ‘n’ Chip supper. This was followed by three games of bingo. Here at Anglia, we like having different saying for different numbers. After 18 months Tracy she has now been sacked from her number 4- she’s on the floor - Traceeeey (if you have played Bingo with Anglia, you will know what I am referring to) and has been replaced with number 4- she’s on the floor – Jannne. If you ask Jane, she may tell you the reason for this Saturday Night Ben and Mal went to the local Fish and Chip shop and collected everyone’s fish & chips for supper, these were enjoyed by all. A big thank you goes to Ben & Mal for arranging this.
Afterwards we had a general knowledge quiz to wake up our brain cells. A week before the rally we were all asked if we would like to take a photograph in of ourselves when we were younger. These were then hung up on a washing line and we had to guess which member was in each photograph. The was great fun and got many conversations going about the younger days and what we got up to.
Great fun was had by all. Sunday morning was Bengy’s bonus ball, Chairmans waffle and the raffle. As usual the chair was put out for these that won three prizes and Jane managed to sit on this for the first time. Well done, Jane.
The committee had a meeting Saturday morning and decided that this year we will again be taking deposits for the Christmas and New Years Eve rallies. Both Rallies
are now full and paying a £20 deposit before the end of August will secure your place at the rally. Last year we had some late payers and so this year we are asking that both Christmas and New Year Eve rallies are paid in full by 31st October. If you would like to be added to the waiting list for either our Christmas or New Year Eve rally, please contact Teresa as last year we did have some members drop out during the year.
We are looking for members to host some of our rallies in 2025 and if this is something that you would like to do please put your name next to a rally on the rally board, (this can always be found on the stage) or speak to any committee members. We do still have some rallies that needs stewards and if you have not run a rally before we can partner you up with a committee member to show you the ropes.
Upcoming rallies: St Patrick’s Day at Whittlesey 14th –16th March PE7 1XB Start time 5.30pm and not before as the school has changed the time this year. 4th - 6th April Ludham Village Hall NR29 5PB start time 1pm. Both rallies are Bookable to Teresa on 07739463321 or Teresa. poole50@virginmedia.com
AVON
Unfortunately, not having formed a committee at the recent EGM, Avon Group has been paused until approximately the end of March/beginning of April 2025. This is to allow any interested volunteers to register their interest to form a new committee and save the group from closure. All enquiries should be via the MCC Office. At the end of the three-month period, CoM will review the situation, the Group will probably close and members and any assets redistributed, pro rata, to nearby groups. Thank you.
In the meantime, some of Avon’s rallies have been saved for this year and are being run by volunteers under the umbrella of the MCC’s Casual Campsites or have been taken over by another group. All those confirmed as saved so far, are listed under Forthcoming Rallies. Any member can host rallies under this arrangement, if you can help save others, please contact Kate Jones whose contact details are in the Club magazine.
Over 60 hats for premature babies, plus several 6” square to be made into blankets, were produced in response to a knitting competition at Avon's New Year rally. Thanks to all the knitters, and Raye for coordinating everything.
Upcoming rallies: 18 - 23 April Easter at Wincanton Sport Ground, Wincanton BA9 9RB. 1 - 6 May Abbey Hill Steam Festival, Yeovil Showground, BA22 9TA. 8 - 13 May Caldicot Castle and Country Park, Church Road, Caldicot, NP26 4HU. 24 - 28 July Brassknocker Basin, Limpley Stoke, Bath, BA2 7JD. 1 – 6 August Pre-Balloon Rally Walcot Rfc, Albert Field, Lansdown, Bath BA1 9BJ.
CHILTERN
Apologies dear reader, we have had a quiet month with no meetings to entertain you with.
The East Midlands Rally at Hose in Leicestershire celebrated Burns Night in Grande Style. The vans arriving on the Friday were all checked in and parked up very efficiently by the stewards with most members then making their way into the hall for a cup of tea or coffee and a natter with friends old and new. There was a very welcome group joining us from the Anglia area including some first timers to the East Midlands area. Friday evening after the sale of raffle tickets we were treated some interesting and entertaining bingo calling from Adrian before a couple of equally interesting and entertaining quizzes, again presented by Adrian. Saturday saw people catching the bus into Melton Mowbray or strolling around the village and having a drink
or a meal in the local pub, with some very complimentary comments coming back.
Saturday evening started with the formal Addressing the Haggis in the very traditional way by Les with assistance from Joyce, Bernadette & Stan and everyone raising a toast with the complimentary whisky. We were all then served with a superb meal of Haggis, Neeps & Tatties (vegetarian option available) and very nice sweet course. The food was all prepared by Bob and his helpers to a very high standard and appreciated by everyone. Following the meal we held the Annual Curling Contest which culminated in a tense final between Anglia and East Midlands eventually being won by our own Sandra & Rob. Adrian then conducted his final quiz all based around the life of Robbie Burns before we finished the evening with some music and karaoke.
Sunday coffee morning and raffle was complimented by Vice Chair Sandra thanking the stewards, Adrian & Anne and Adrian & Gill and all those that helped for putting together a fantastic rally.
Upcoming Rallies: 13-16 March, Country & Western, Ingoldmells, PE25 1NL. 4-6 April, Waddington Village Hall, LN5 9NX. Both rallies bookable through Anne Taylo

NENE VALLEY
Chester Estate Meet. Well, what a weekend we had! Visitors from as far afield as Kent, East Mids, Chiltern and Anglia came to join us at our first meet of the year at this picturesque setting overlooking the River Nene. We had the unexpected use of the Threshing Barn (or as some insisted- the Thrashing Barn) on Friday evening where we could have a Noggin and natter. Jane arranged a couple of games of Bingo, Mick the bonus ball and what Paul called an easy quiz on car makes and models.
Lancashire Group
On Saturday morning some set off on the various walks around the Estate and along the River Nene with some reaching Wellingborough.
Others, in two groups had the privilege of having a guided tour of the Archeological Resource Centre, one of only two in the country (the other in London) where artefacts are stored from all over Northamptonshire in this modern facility. Our guides were very informative and we were shown bones from a woolly rhinoceros, the horns from an aurochs, Nene pottery, Roman pottery and mosaics and flints over 4000 years old. We learned so much about our predecessors. Others made good use of the restaurant with reports of the breakfast being superb.
Saturday evening dawned and again we met in the Threshing Barn where John, our professional caller gave instruction on barn dances such as the Gay Gordon’s (can we say that these days?) and the Durham Reel. I think most of the entertainment was by laughing at ourselves as some couldn’t even remember their lefts from their rights!
A bitter Sunday morning, so we had a quick coffee morning under shelter in the courtyard before dispersing our separate ways.
We have been asked by the management of the Chester Estate to thank all of you who came to this meet, saying it was a pleasure to have the MCC with them. They have asked the committee to a meeting next month to ‘fine tune’ our next meet and they have ideas of their own that they would like to put forward to us - so thank you all! Pat.
Upcoming rallies: March 14-16 The Cock at Broom, 23 High Street, Broom, Biggleswade, SG18 9NA. Start Time 1pm, Bookable, Cost £14 pupn. April 11-13 Prince William School, Herne Road, Oundle PE8 4BS
NORTHERN COUNTIES
To start the season off some members have a get together at Riverside Caravan Park Wooler to celebrate Burns night. This year the weekend coincided with storm Eowyn which meant that some members had to delay their journey until the Saturday and unfortunately some were unable to make the weekend. On Saturday evening the group all met in the local church hall for a traditional meal of Haggis, neeps and tatties. No expense was spared for the entertainment for the evening with members taking it in turn with poems, jokes stories and of course singing. Whilst some members
returned home on the Sunday for those that were still there Sunday lunch was enjoyed in the local pub. A great time was had by all and thanks to Dave and Jan for organising.
Anyone new to rallying it’s a great way to meet others with a common interest. Each rally has something different to offer. Most of the locations are conveniently located to a nearby town with good transport links. If you haven’t tried a rally yet make 2025 the year to try.
Most rallies for Northern Counties are non-bookable however there are a selection of rallies where booking is required. Where booking is required the webmaster will release a booking option on the club’s website as soon as bookings are available.
If you are wanting to plan you year further a full list of rallies for 2025 and up to date information can be found on the club’s website www.mccnortherncounties.co.uk . The Facebook page Northern Counties MCC may also provide up to date information for any future rallies. Denise Hurst

In the mid bleak winter month of November, thoughts turned to the Annual Dinner Dance, which would be held in January 2025 in the Ross Park Hotel, Kells, Ballymena. A raffle which would give two nights bed and breakfast stay in the hotel was organized as a first prize and a second prize of the meal for two, valued at £70. There was great excitement at the New year rally when Jacqueline and Mark Hutchinson were the lucky recipients of the weekend and Alex and Ivan Mellon received their £70 back for the cost of the meal for two.
Balloons were ordered with our 25th Anniversary shamrock sticker on them. Timings for the sparkling wine reception on the evening prior to the meal was coordinated with the hotel. The photographer from the Ballymena Guardian, Darren Crawford, was asked to attend. We look forward to seeing the pictures of the committee with their 25th Anniversary Cake. place cards ordered. 98 people paid for their meals. Menu choices for all typed up and sent to the hotel 48 hours prior to the event. Unfortunately, one couple, our own beloved Tom and Agnes Adair was unable to attend due to illness. Having let me know on the Wednesday evening they will get a refund. 38 motorhomes parked in the carpark over the weekend. Thank you, Robbie Hewitt for parking the majority of them. Also, for ensuring those who had booked into the hotel negotiated through the icy path without injury.
A special thanks to Sally and Norman McKee who appreciated the hard work that goes into our rallies. I will enjoy the wine and I do love the flowers. Many thanks.
At 6.45 on Saturday 11th January we made our way to the foyer. A sparkling wine reception greeted all members. After photographs of the well-scrubbed up members, had been taken, we went to the beautifully decorated dining room. The meal which followed was excellent. Our beloved Chairman Sam Arlow thanked the members for their support. Commended his committee on their hard work so far this year. Thanked the staff of Ross Park. Advised members that the raffle which had six £25 prizes, four £50 prizes, and two £75 prizes. Totalling £500 was going to be drawn in the break. Also, thanks to members who had donated some prizes and along with other motorhome prizes would take the value of the raffle near £1000. Music by Keep er Lit kept the members on the dance floor all night. Following not too much sleep, the next morning, the cake was cut and along with shortbread we had tea and coffee and a fond farewell to one an all until the next time when we will celebrate Burns Night in Cookstown. Neeps and Tatties and a wee nip of whiskey will be on offer. Safe travels to all. Irene Hewitt
Our “BURNS NIGHT” Celebrations took place a week later than planned due to Storm Eowyn, however this did not deter the members from attending as 33 vans parked up at Regent House Grammar School. Our hosts for the weekend Selma & Elmer McMullan were ably assisted by Maud & Mervyn Ross. They warmly welcomed us while the men safely parked us all.
Friday night saw everyone meet in the hall for some chat and a catch up. Some of the members participated in learning how to do the Virgina Reel. However, after many attempts, lots of laughter and mayhem we still require more practice! On Saturday some of the members went into the town for retail therapy while others watched the Six Nations Rugby at the local Legion Club after having a bite to eat. It was during this time that we learnt of ‘Turnip Gate’ thankfully the mysterious disappearing of the NEEPS was soon resolved!
While some of us enjoyed the afternoon Selma and her team were busy preparing haggis, neeps and tatties. The tables were beautifully decorated with floral and tartan displays. At 7.30 Matthew Wallace piped the haggis in accompanied by Mervyn Ross and Jane Aston. Jane eloquently gave the Haggis address and this was followed by everyone enjoying a tasty meal, dessert and a little nip

of whiskey. Sam Arlow gave a fair and humorous speech on behalf of the laddies, a light hearted response was followed from the lassies by Jacqueline Hutchison.
We had live music provided by Dave Kane and this saw many members dance the night away. During the interval we had our raffle with lots of prizes generously donated, Thank you to all who contributed.
Sunday morning we met for our usual coffee, tea and buns provided by our hosts. Selma thanked her team who helped prepare and serve the Burns Night meal. Our Chairman Sam thanked the Hosts for another fantastic rally, he also congratulated three couples who have recently purchased new motorhomes, Isaac & Pauline Grant, Ernie & Sue Corry and Jackie & Mary Hoey. Several members were celebrating birthdays and good wishes was conveyed to them also. He welcomed new members Anthony & Michelle Friar. The number plate draw was won by Caryn & Garry Brown and Jane & Harry Aston.
We look forward to welcoming everyone to our next Rally for Valentines weekend. Jacqueline Hutchison.

Hi everyone, I seems very strange not to be reporting on a rally this month, the first time I think since I started as the scribe many years ago. SUSSEX
The New Year rally season has begun, starting with our popular afternoon Soup Meet at Dial Post Village Hall in January. A wide range of home made soups and cakes were available to tempt those brave souls who had ventured out into the cold, icy wastes of the Sussex countryside. It was good seeing so many members, catching up on all the news and renewing/making friendships. We also greeted 3 new members who I’m sure we will be welcoming at future events. 2025 rally programmes were given to attendees, with the remainder posted soon after. If by some chance you haven’t received yours, let me know.
We now have hosts for all our 2025 rallies. Thanks to all the volunteers who make our group so successful. Check our website (SussexMCC.weebly.com) or Facebook page (Sussex Group of the Motorcaravanners’ Club) for more details.
Upcoming rallies: Friday 21 to Sunday 23 March, start time 2 pm at The Barn, Old Salt Farm Road, Lancing, BN15 8JG, to be hosted by Ted, Jackie and Jim. EHU available on request (prior booking needed for this), water, Elsan point, showers and on site cafe available. A short walk to the coast road for regular buses east to Shoreham and Brighton, west to Lancing centre and Worthing. This is a popular venue with opportunities to relax or explore the area.
Thursday 17 to Monday 21 April, start time 2pm at St Richard’s Catholic College, Ashdown Road, Bexhill on Sea, TN40 1SF for our Easter Celebration, with professional entertainment from the ever popular pocket rocket Mel, quizzes, games and an Evening at the Races already organised; to be hosted by the enthusiastic Sussex committee. A fish and chip supper may be arranged if members are interested. With over 2 miles of seafront promenade, featuring the annual Bexhill 100 Seafront/ Easter Bonnet display on the Sunday, there’s lots to do and see. This is a bookable rally, with a deposit (£20) to Mary, our treasurer.
I hope to see you soon. Remember, the club is for the enjoyment of all our members. You can do as little or as much as you want. But consider joining us on the committee, in specific roles or just general. It is a rewarding experience, not too onerous, benefitting yourself and others. We all want our group to not just survive but thrive! Jo, Sussex Secretary and Scribe
SWP
As I write this in January, I do hope everyone has been fortunate enough to get away unscathed from all the storms that have hit the South West and the rest of the country. Our first rally is at the end of February, and too late for this issue, so I do not have a rally to report on this month. However, I thought it would be useful to let you know of any amendments to the programme and highlight the 2 new venues in the SWP 2025 programme. Firstly,
and most important, I want to confirm the SWP AGM will be on Friday 10th October and not the 11th as stated in our programme. We have 2 new venues for SWP one in MAY 29-2 June = 4 nights Veryan Sports & Social Club , Elerkey Lane, Veryan, Truro, TR2 5UW. £18 pupn No EHU. The other in SEPTEMBER 11-15 = 4 nights River Dart Country Park, Ashburton, Devon TQ13 7NP £24 pupn. We need hosts for this venue, if you are interested please get in touch with me or one of the committee. It would be great for these and all our rallies to be well supported. Thank you to the members that have expressed an interest to host a rally. Tencreek is now sorted, however, I still need to have confirmed hosts for Anchor Barrow and River Dart
Please remember if any changes to the rally programme are necessary they will be notified to all MCC members through this monthly newsletter, SWP and MCC websites together with our SWP Facebook page.
Upcoming Rallies: March 21-24 = 3 nights Tencreek Holiday Park, Polperro Road, Looe, Cornwall PL13 2JR. April 17-22 = 5 nights Trevornick Holiday Park, Holywell Bay, Cornwall. TR8 5PW. May 16-20 = 4 nights Little Winnick, Pentewan, St Austell PL26 6DL.
WEST COUNTRY
March already the year is moving forwards quickly. All of our rallies are filling up with many of the popular events having very few spaces left as I write this in February.
We are holding a Charity Rally at Merry Harriers in June, there will be a tabletop sale, quizzes, afternoon games and a few surprises to keep everyone on their toes whilst we raise money for our chosen charity. We would obviously like to raise as much money as possible so the more people to join the event would make that possible.
Unfortunately, due to the timing of the rally report being sent to the magazine there is no write up to give on any of our rallies yet. With summer just round the corner we look forward to welcoming not just our members but members from all over the country to our events.
Upcoming rallies: Unity Farm Brean 25th – 30th March FULLY BOOKED. Sourton Down Caravan Park 23rd – 27th April. Warcombe Farm 13th – 18th May

YORKSHIRE
10-12 January 2025 Skipton Auction Mart, unfortunately this rally was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. This has been rearranged for 28th Feb – 2nd March, we hope to see you there.
31st January to 2nd February 2025 Ripon Racecourse Rally. We arrived at Ripon to dry, calm but not quite sunny weather. Our hosts this weekend were Carol & Malc Core and Gill & Steve Aggett who were very quick to book everyone in and park all the vans up around the site. There was a total of 30 visitors; 21 from Yorkshire, including 1 new member, 4 from Northern Counties, 4 from Lancashire including a first time visitor to this side of the Pennines and 1 from East Midlands
The weather on Saturday was pleasant enough for a walk along the canal to Ripon town, with its impressive cathedral, independent shops, some lovely places to eat and drink and an amazing pie shop. We were all treated to an amazing display of flying skills of the local starlings who gave us a spectacular murmuration on both evenings, unfortunately this also gave every van owner another reason to wash their vans as the fallout from said birds sounded like heavy rainfall on the motorhome roof and definitely a dangerous time to go for a walk!
Dean from “The Dark Side” (Lancashire) provided our music/karaoke on both evenings, Friday involved a couple of quizzes, Bingo, called by Elaine, Karaoke and Dancing. Saturday evening saw the return of the Potato Game that was eventually won by John Young, and more anagram/ quiz/puzzles to keep the tables busy.
A coffee morning was held on Sunday, a chance for everyone to have one final natter, including a chance to chat to our Rally Officer Christina about future hosting and shadowing opportunities and what this entails. Thanks to everyone who attended and of course, our hosts, Carol, Malc, Steve and Gill.

OUT & ABOUT
THIS MONTH WE VISIT... N. IRELAND
GUIDE TO NORTHERN IRELAND THE GOOD CRAIC
In a giant land filled with thrills and history, Frances and Michael Howorth experience the heart warming hospitality and generosity of those who live, work and play in Northern Ireland.
Anyone who attended the Club AGM last June will have heard the passionate plea from Peter Johnston of the Northern Ireland group for the national committee to consider his region as a possible venue for a future National Rally. He painted a pretty picture of the warm welcome club members would receive should ever they venture across the Irish Sea. We decided not to wait for a rally, but instead, chose to discover what delights await those who take their motorcaravan to Belfast and take a tour of the province.
But first we had to get there. The ferry operator Stena have two routes serving Belfast. One sails from Cairnryan on the west coast of Scotland and the other from Birkenhead across the Mersey from Liverpool. We chose to sail from Cairnryan and booked our return through Liverpool. The voyage from Scotland is the shorter and cheaper of the two but what you save in ship time and cash may well be absorbed by cost of getting to Cairnryan in the first place. Certainly, for those whose journey begins in the extreme north of England or anywhere in Scotland, this route with its two and half hour
crossing time has to be the winner. By contrast, the sailing to Liverpool from Belfast takes all day but cuts out a lot of driving if your home base is in the Midlands or south of England. Both routes are served by fast, modern ships that are a pleasure to sail on. Loading the van on board Stena Superfast VIII was easy and well organised. And our passage across the Irish Sea was made more enjoyable sailing in the company’s Stena Plus Lounge with its panoramic views, comfortable seating and complementary refreshments.
To celebrate our tour of Northern Ireland, and perhaps to demonstrate how wonderfully hospitable the locals are, the Northern Irish Club hosted a mini rally in our honour. MCC NI Chairman David Kyle-Ewing and his wife Thelma joined Vice Chairman Sam Arlow to take part in a special meet-up centred on Matties Meeting House in Cairncastle. A great village pub that happens to be the local for the MCC NI Secretary Iris McEwan and her husband Bob. Good food

accompanied by traditional music from a folk band ensured we all had a jolly time putting the world to rights as only those in good company and friendship ever can.
Our tour, expertly prepared by Tourism Northern Ireland, and tweaked by Bob, began with a lesson in traditional Irish breadmaking at Tracey’s Farmhouse Kitchen in Killinchy a 45-minute drive away from Belfast. Here Tracey Jeffery showed us how to mix yeast free dough that becomes soda bread and bake it on a griddle. Not so much a cookery class, more a hands-on experience, our time here was more about eating and enjoying life as it used to be some 30 odd years ago.
We had chosen to base ourselves at the Murlough Cottage Caravan Park just outside Newcastle for a few days while we explored the area. Just inland from Dundrum Bay under the shadow of the Mourne Mountains, the site is clean, tidy and family run. Behind a not unattractive, static caravan park there are two pleasant fields set aside specifically for touring vans.
Making truffles at Nearey Nogs
Stoneground Chocolate
On our first day in the area, we headed into the Mourne hills, famous for their hard granite boulders. Just 56 million years old these are somewhat newly formed in geological terms but are nevertheless
impressive. At the Spelga Dam Reservoir, there is an easy-to-access car park that is both free and open 24 hours. From the car park there is brisk walk uphill, that can be boggy so bring good walking shoes, but the views and photographic opportunities are stupendous.
We also visited the Silent Valley Reservoir, just eight miles away from
the campsite. In 1933 the damming of the Kilkeel River valley set in place the Mourne Wall and then the huge reservoir called 'Silent Valley'. Built to gather water from the mountains over most of the High Mournes, the Silent Valley and Ben Crom reservoirs supply water for most of County Down and part of Belfast. The surrounding parkland, lakes and ponds, which were part of the original landscape design, are open to the public. A £5 day pass, includes motorcaravan parking and access to the splendid mountain scenery, woodland walks, and a range of facilities including a coffee shop and an exhibition centre.
The opportunity to visit Northern Ireland’s most delicious and first bean-to-bar chocolate maker is one that should not be missed. Here we learned all about the chocolate-
making process. Set amongst the beautiful countryside of County Down, NearyNógs Stoneground Chocolate began quite by accident when Shane and Dorothy Neary started a one-off fund-raising experiment creating fudge which has turned into a full-time business. They now import 8-10 tons of ethically and sustainably sourced cacao from around the world and pledge to pay above market value for their raw material to honour the cacao farmers, the rain forests and support communities.
Continuing our 'small is beautiful' theme we next went to the Killowen Distillery, said to be the smallest distillery in Ireland. Here, traditional ‘pot still’ whiskey is distilled in a tiny, converted cowshed. Pot still whiskey uses a broader selection of grains than just malted
barley. The product begins life as Poitin, meaning little pot and can only be so called if it's younger than 10 weeks old.The distillery is very much a cottage industry, everything is hand-mixed and is far removed from the modern fully automated distilleries one generally associates with Irish Whiskey. Here they can, on average, make just one cask every week.
Our tour guide on this occasion was Danny McGreevy who welcomed us by playing the Uillean Pipes, the Irish cousin of the Scottish bagpipes. “Music and whiskey are inseparable,” he says, “like folklore and romance.” Danny taught us all about the processes and history of Irish whiskey making. While we learned the ins and outs of distilling, we confess to trying a few drams as part of the due diligence we always practice when writing these features.
The next day, and in a bid to clear away some alcoholic haze, we went on an e-biking tour exploring filming locations in Tollymore Estate used in Game of Thrones and other movies. John Keating of Bike Mourne was our guide as we sped through the estate. "This is where they shot the 'wilding >>

pit' scene in the very first episode and that is the famous stone table where the brothers each were given a wolf cub by their father" he proudly points out. Later we see bridges used in the filming of The Fall and Dungeons and Dragons. John was a particularly helpful guide and at one point he detours to show us a fabulous touring campsite set inside the Tollymore Estate. We wish he hadn't, it looked delightful!
Located just 30 minutes from Belfast and 90 minutes from Dublin, the Game of Thrones Studio Tour gave us an opportunity to immerse ourselves further in the popular series with its expansive collection of costumes, props, sets and weapons.
In the studio covering over 100,000 sq ft, the interactive experience reveals the world of Westeros that we have never seen before. It gives visitors the chance to
walk through the iconic sets of King’s Landing and Winterfell, as well as delving deep into the world behind the screen, charting the progress from the earliest concepts to the jawdropping final cuts. What impressed us the most was the attention to detail everything possessed. Oh, how we wish we had more time to view it all and if we can impart some advice we would urge you to spend a whole day here. If you are a fan, you will not
From there, we made our way to the Royal Hillsborough Castle. The late Georgian mansion was built in the 1770s by Wills Hill, first Marquis of Downshire and was later remodelled in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, Hillsborough is a working royal palace functioning as the official residence of the Royal Family when they are in Northern Ireland. The grounds consist of 96 acres of beautiful gardens, offering a contrast of ornamental grounds, peaceful woodland, meandering waterways, and trimmed lawns. Notable features include statue of Ossian outside the main entrance, the Lady Alice Temple, the Quaker Burial ground and the Icehouse. That night we pitched our campervan at the Benone Caravan Park in Limavady, County Londonderry. It is one of several Aire-like sites owned by councils throughout Northern Ireland. Rather small but loved by locals and touring families, the site is just behind Benone Strand, part of one of the longest beaches in Ireland and stretching from the Foyle Estuary at Magilligan Point to Downhill in the east. Our reason for coming here, however, was not the beach but what was on it! HotBox Benone is a portable sauna that parks each day at the water’s edge. Run by Carl from Sweden, who should know a thing or two about saunas, he discovered his mobile wood fired sauna was a great

not to try it!
Lunch that day was at LIR, a restaurant overlooking Coleraine Marina. LIR means sea, and this fishmonger’s shop, turned specialist fish restaurant, is the perfect showcase for local freshly landed seafood cooked to perfection. But no matter how good the desserts were we had to take our leave early if we were to complete our sightseeing and get to see one of Ireland's most famous sights.
Formed over 60 million years ago, when molten lava cooled suddenly on contact with water, the Giant’s Causeway is an awe-inspiring landscape. The impressive £18m visitor centre is an innovative, stateof-the-art facility which rises out of the landscape and harmonises with the surrounding terrain.
Not too far away and swinging 100ft above the sea, is the Carrick-aRede Rope Bridge. Made up of planks strung between wires, it crosses a 60ft chasm to the island of Carrick-aRede. Fishermen erected the bridge over 200 years ago so that they could
check on their salmon nets. If you are brave enough you can follow in their footsteps!
Our overnight stop was Watertop Farm just outside Ballycastle. The

McBride family have farmed here for five generations and in days gone by it used to be a traditional mixed farm, milking cows by hand and keeping cattle and sheep. Now it is a delightfully tranquil campsite. Some of the original buildings are still in use and the family have retained lots of the farming heritage.
The next morning, we made our way to The Gobbins Cliff Path, a dramatic walkway along cliff face. It clings to and sometimes hangs from the cliff top and makes for a thrilling walk. The experience, which takes three hours to complete is made in the company of a trained guide who tells the story about how and why this incredible feat of engineering came about. Do not worry about the heights; just go and enjoy. You will not be disappointed.

Nor will you be let down by Belfast and the wonders it contains. Titanic Belfast was constructed at the cost of £97million and opened in 2012. It is an authentic retelling of the iconic story of the world’s most famous ship. Now a leading tourist attraction located right on the spot where the famous ship was designed, built and launched, the iconic building (shaped like the bows of a ship) comprises of nine galleries spread across four floors. The experience transports the
visitor through time: travelling from Edwardian ‘Boomtown Belfast’, learning about the lives of the workers who built the ship and the lives of the passengers and crew who made the fateful voyage, to the present wreck lying at rest on the ocean floor. It is truly fascinating.
The Jordanstown Camping Site is located on the outskirts of Belfast and is handy for those needing to overnight close to the city or as in our casew, close by the ferry port. Our

For many Club members the leisure vehicle shows at the NEC in February and October each year offer the chance to compare and contrast motorcaravans in the leadup to purchasing one. But if only prospective buyers were to attend, then visitor numbers would be somewhat low. The fact is the majority of showgoers are there because they enjoy the show atmosphere and most vendors are there to sell, or like insurance companies for example, to introduce themselves to potential future customers.
The chances of an insurance broker making a sale of a new vehicle policy during the show are
rather rare but that is not why they pay good money to get stands where visitor footfall is high. CaravanGuard, for example, chose a stand on a corner close to the entrance of one of the halls and featured an interactive game, with instant win prizes to grab people's attention. Visitors simply registered their details to get a free entry in the game that generally had a 1 in 3 chance of winning and included an entry into the big prize draw. “It’s a win-win,” says Liz Harrison, the firm’s PR and Marketing Manager. "We get good contact details and visitors get to see that a specialist insurance company like us is staffed by a fun-loving team and not with faceless backroom boffins hiding behind books of risk
analysis data." Liz continues, “It is important that we build a face-toface relationship with our customers. We need to impart to them that we, as an industry, reward their efforts to keep their assets safe and secure. The more they safely protect their motorcaravans the lower we can make their premiums.
“One good way to do that,” says Matt Higginson, the sales director at Disklok, "is to fit our new Diamond Edition Disklok. It is our flagship model designed and developed specifically to pass Sold Secures’ most severe cutting test. With angle grinder attacks becoming more prevalent, our design team have worked hard to thwart even the most audacious criminals building into it the anti-angle grind Diamonite R compound. Retaining all the features of the Gold Edition, this model packs even more resistance to angle grinders and offers the greatest >>

visible deterrent on the market."
Luke Bull, an account manager at Millenco agrees the visual element is important when it comes to deterring thieves. He confirmed that at the show their fastest selling product was their steering wheel lock.
Vince Wise is the Director of Leisure Vehicle and Holiday Parks Security at the NCC and he confirms that motorcaravan thefts are on the increase. He warns that owners of older vans should not become complacent assuming that thieves are only targeting new vehicles. “There is a very active market in second hand parts across the globe and many older vans are being stolen to feed that market.”
Stuart Craig is the Head of Leisure at Howden Insurance, the brand behind the specialist caravan and motorhome insurance company, Shield Total Insurance.
He says, “One way to drive down your insurance premium is to fit a GPS tracker." At the show there were two companies selling trackers that score well with customers who have fitted them .
Mike Boynes is the Marketing Coordinator at Global Telemetrics, a firm that supplies GPS trackers to every type of road using vehicle. He suggests every motorcaravan should have one fitted. Speaking to us at the show he said, “Since 2020, campervans and motorhomes have featured in our top 10 recovered vehicles each year”. Perhaps because he knows we own one, he added, “FIAT Ducato based motorhomes are now the most popular target. We have seen motorhomes stolen from all manner of locations including storage yards, as well as from peoples drives.” Gavin Hennessy, the firms Head of Marketing, told us: “All of our devices are protected
by 24/7/365 monitoring and are supported by a dedicated Repatriations Team who work alongside the police to quickly secure and recover any stolen vehicles. Our device also allows for alarm inputs so our team will contact customers if the alarm sounds. Geofencing to build a virtual perimeter around the vehicle will alert the customer if the vehicle leaves the area through our GTE Track app. Our S5+ iMob device can also be installed, which is an immobiliser as well as tracking device which will prevent the vehicle from starting if our driver detection bluetooth cards do not connect to the tracker.”
It was while we were on the Global Telemetrics stand that we learned of two good news stories. One customer told us: “I was notified by Global Telemetrics at around 2am one morning that my vehicle tracker alarm had been activated. I looked out of my bedroom window and realised my motorhome had been stolen. It was while the guys from the operations room were still talking me through what would happen next, that my vehicle was stopped and recovered. It was amazing that it all happened within 20 minutes of the alarm being raised and shows how good the system is.” Another customer who had been listening to our conversation added: “I discovered that my added: “I discovered that my

The news was equally heartening on the Moving Intelligence stand in Hall 2. security solution they
With criminals becoming increasingly sophisticated, motorcaravan owners need to consider every robust and reliable security solution they can in the face of the ongoing battle against
vehicle theft. Designed to deter theft and aid in the swift recovery of stolen vehicles, VIN CHIP is an advanced security marking System that uses RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology to uniquely identify campervans and motorhomes. Each unit is embedded with RFID chips and has visible markings, all linked to the vehicle's unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). These markings are registered in a Central Registration & Identification Scheme (CRIS), a secure database with over 800,000 assets registered and accessible by law enforcement, ensuring that stolen vehicles can be quickly identified and recovered.
The technology behind VIN
CHIP includes tamper-evident labels that are placed throughout the vehicle, making it nearly impossible for criminals to remove all traces of identification. These visible deterrent markings warn potential thieves that the vehicle is protected. Additionally, RFID scanners used by police can quickly detect the embedded chips from a distance, without exposing their position, and identify the vehicle even if external markings have been removed or altered.
Trackers are not the only way of staying in touch with a vehicle and insurance companies like Shield and CaravanGuard are just as keen on entry alarm systems. Pandora Alarms where at the show displaying their Camper security system designed to put owners in full control of their vehicle, through their SmartPhones.
The system works by detecting ID tags close to the vehicle. It connects to a user’s mobile phone through
bluetooth when they get close to the vehicle and GSM when they are out of bluetooth range. This means users can stay connected to their vehicle 24/7 from anywhere in the world. Full alarm notifications will instantly appear on your smartphone if the vehicle is attacked. Four bluetooth wireless sensors are fitted to the doors, and to any external storage box or roof/bike rack. Tilt sensors detect if the vehicle is being jacked up to be towed or in the case of a wheel theft. A dual shock sensor detects all hard or even light impacts. Motion and accelerometers, detect the vans speed and movement. Owners can open the smartphone app and monitor exact parameters and location of the vehicle. From here they can shut the vehicle down, disabling all keys and Immobiliser tags by simply calling the alarm system and entering a secret code.
A special ‘Stay Home’ mode protects the van even when owners are inside it. The system works with both IOS & Android.

It was while we were on the Fire Safety Stick stand that we learned of one very lucky escape. The owners of a 2023 motorhome were on the stand buying a couple of Fire Safety Sticks after witnessing one in action. They told us the story – a few weeks ago they parked beside a van that suffered a small gas explosion behind their fridge that consequently caused a fire. The owners, a couple who escaped unharmed, then alerted surrounding residents. Many came to help with their traditional fire extinguishers, while others disconnected the mains and isolated the gas. One of the extinguishers used was a foam extinguisher but unfortunately it had little or no effect as the fire was at the back of a fridge and behind an external vent in a cavity.
traditional extinguishers used had not been able to reach the fire he ran back to his van to collect his FSS100 (100-second Fire Safety Stick) which successfully extinguished the fire. Gases produced by the Fire Safety Stick were able to weave a way into the cavity and reach the source of the flames, whereas the traditional extinguisher had needed a direct line of sight to attack the fire.
The compact sticks are perfect for motorhomes and campervans, weighing just 215g they offer more than 50 seconds of discharge time. Compare that to a typical powder extinguisher which weighs at least 2.25kg with only a 7 second discharge and it is easy to see why they are so popular. Their lifespan is at least 15 years minimum, triple that of other extinguishers and they need no annual servicing. They are

safety bands to each tyre. These are fitted inside, filling the wheel well. They make it physically impossible for the tyre to come it
When it comes to safety tyres are one aspect that is often overlooked. According to National Highways, more than half (55%) of UK drivers do not always check their tyres before a long journey. Properly maintained, tyres are not just about preventing breakdowns; they are about ensuring you and your passenger safety. Overloaded motorcaravans, underinflated tyres and worn tyre tread significantly increase the risk of blowouts, aquaplaning, and loss of control. Keeping control of a motorcaravan when a tyre blowout occurs can be tricky and if you are not trained in how to handle it can be really dangerous. One way to mitigate the risk of losing control, is to fit Tyron safety bands to each tyre. These are fitted inside, filling the wheel well. They make it physically impossible for the tyre to come off should it deflate, providing peace of mind in the knowledge that in the event of a blowout, you will be provided with run-flat capability. This will enable you to slowly travel to a safe stopping location.
