Unfortunately, we're not meeting in person at present due to the pandemic. Instead, we're sending out activity sheets by email/post for the children to enjoy doing with their family/ carers. In January, we continued the Christmas story with the Wise Men's visit to Jesus, with a story, song and a maze helping the Wise Men find their way.

Panto plaudits for Team B as the show went on!

With many productions being postponed a year ago, due to the ongoing twists and turns of the Coronavirus pandemic, there was a big question mark hanging over venues this year, as Pantomimes everywhere prepared to return with their fingers firmly crossed.

This question mark included local amateur dramatics troupe, Team B Productions, as they persevered against all odds, to finally bring their eagerly awaited production of Jack and the Beanstalk, to the stage of the Leiston Film Theatre, having postponed the show in January 2021.

And so, with temperature taken, sanitiser administered and face covering in place, I took my seat amongst an almost packed venue, for a long-awaited return to Pantoland and there was surely an air of excitement that the show was actually happening.

With the overture striking up, courtesy of the ever-brilliant

Musical Director, Tom Horton, and the delightful students from the Chloe Kinrade School of Dance making their debut appearance in Pantomime, the fun began and without hesitation, Fairy Bean, expertly played by Grace Clutterbuck, set the scene with rhyming perfection, as we were whisked off to the Pantoland hamlet of Fiddle-on-the-Fen. In this fast-paced version of the beloved story, a scheming Dame Trott (Wayne Burns) does her best to resolve the family's penniless predicament, but despite the efforts of her unwilling children, Jack (Toby Young) and Jill (Lauren Major), they end up with little alternative other than to sell Daisy the family cow. But on his way to find the heifer a home, Jack encounters the nasty Fleshcreep (Vici Hadfield), who tricks Jack into swapping the cow for a stalk.

We all know what happens next and after the obligatory interval ice cream, we arrived at the top of the beanstalk to meet the awesome Giant Blunderbore (Patrick Norman), who had dinner-plate plans for poor Daisy

(Sky Henson and Amy Brewer).

Thankfully, the Trott family wasn't far behind and with the help of Mrs. Cupcake the Cook (Mandy Baskett), they eventually rescued Daisy, destroyed the beanstalk and lived happily ever after, complete with a hen that laid golden eggs!

Stand out moments for me included the rollercoaster of slapstick jokes and the randy Farmer Giles (Marcus Ward), who had one lady in front of me crying with laughter. The gags were all delivered with great timing and the hilarious television segment, which saw

the Dame and her children replicating various programmes to avoid capture was priceless.

The If I Were Not in Pantomime sketch added traditional panto fun to the proceedings and the tiny tot dancers, complete with light-up tutu's were simply delightful.

All in all, it was an absolute joy to watch such a highly polished production from script writers Wayne Burns and Stephen Ginger, that was bursting with colour and energy. As I leant later, a number of cast members had been unwell themselves as the show moved closer, but were unanimous in their desire to present the Pantomime by any means – and they did, much to the delight and appreciation of all those present. Hip, hip, hooray!

Next year, Team B bring us the tale of Robin Hood, between the 13th and 15th January 2023, with 400 advance tickets already sold. The poster claims that the production will be the merriest of Pantomimes and if next year leaves me feeling as merry as this year did, I can't wait. I suggest you book your tickets while you can.

In March, the Woodbridge Society will welcome the Chief Executive of The Fairtrade Foundation to talk about the wideranging work of his organisation.

Michael Gidney has worked in the field of international development for thirty years, with a particular focus on fighting poverty through trade, and has been running Fairtrade for ten years. His favourite Fairtrade product is Zaytoun Palestinian Olive Oil. "It's wonderful quality and it supports smallholders farming in incredibly challenging

circumstances."

Michael Gidney's talk will be on Wednesday 2nd March at 7:30pm in the Woodbridge Society's new home: Quay Church near the bottom of Quay Street.

First in line, as the SMILE Café relaunched at the new Fromus Centre, was Saxmundham Town Councillor Roger Hedley Lewis, who had brought with him a small breakfast party to test out the new catering service in town. No sooner had the tables been set out, laid and sanitised, than the orders were in... A mix of tea, coffee and hot chocolate, porridge (extra thick), toast with jam, beans on toast and a full English breakfast.

With a brand new commercial kitchen, new equipment and eight halogen plates, the head cook and kitchen staff were immediately under pressure to get 'firing on all eight'.

The first Wednesday, with no promotion, was meant to be a very soft launch to trial the system but once service was under way, a steady stream of customers meant the kitchen service didn't get a break until 1:30pm!

Financial focus on...

Are you employing a carer?

The number of elderly or infirm people who directly employ a care worker or personal assistant has been increasing in recent years.

Whilst the funding may come from a variety of sources, the relationship between the service user and the care worker/assistant is predominantly one of employer and employee. This means that the employer must operate PAYE and NIC on wages, deal with autoenrolment for pensions and other statutory payments. Often the role of employer (the one giving the instructions, not necessarily the one receiving care) is then taken by another family member. These schemes are known as "Care and Support" (C&S) Employers.

A C&S Employer is specifically defined as an individual who employs a person to provide domestic or personal services at or from the employer's

home where the recipient of the services (who may either be the employer or a member of the employer's family) has a physical or mental disability, is elderly or infirm. This is for directly employed care workers, not those employed by a Care Agency (who then controls which worker goes to which patient and when). If you use a Care Agency to find carers for you, it is vital to check whether responsibility for employing then lies with you or the Care Agency or, very occasionally, if they are self-employed in their own right.

A C&S Employer can operate a simplified PAYE scheme, but not if the person operating the scheme already operates a PAYE scheme for other reasons. This can be used quarterly instead of monthly, and in some circumstances can be allowed file on paper if you are demonstrably "digitally

excluded" i.e: unable to use a computer compared to simply not wishing to. Further relief may also be available with the £4,000 employment allowance which works to reduce the number of secondary Employers NIC meaning it is not a grant of £4,000, instead a reduction of Secondary NIC of up to £4,000.

For C&S employees, there's also an exemption for board and lodging provided to "Home Care Workers" which otherwise can be taxed as an accommodation benefit on the employee and on which the employer has additional

reporting requirements.

We're delighted to welcome some new fosterers to the branch.

It's wonderful that people are willing to volunteer their time to looking after unwanted cats and helping to prepare them to start their new lives. We'll also be reviewing our fundraising events for the coming year and hope to recruit new volunteers to help out at these, too. February is the month of love.

As a cat lover and caring owner, one of the best things you can do to protect your cat is to have them neutered. A female kitten can get pregnant whilst still a kitten herself. Kittens should be spayed no later than four months old.

Neutering your male kitten early will help keep him safe, ensuring that he doesn't get into constant fights over females which will

protect him from injury and diseases. It will also stop his urge to wander off in search of a mate and lessen the chances of him getting lost or injured on the road. Neutering also helps the general cat population. The fewer un-planned litters there are, the more homes will be available for the many felines which come into our care. A simple 'snip' really does show you care! We're able to help with the cost of neutering in hardship cases. Call us to find out more.

Looking for a home: This pretty little lady is Nell, who is about eighteen-months old. Nell is a timid girl, who will need a quiet home with someone who has experience of felines and is happy not to rush any interactions. With patience and understanding, she'll soon gain her confidence. A home without other pets or young children will be essential. Please contact us if

Two Magpies Bakery find new nest in Woodbridge Two Magpies Bakery, the artisan bakery established in 2012, have agreed to lease arguably the best located shop in Woodbridge and hope to be open and trading in two weeks once the fit-out works have been completed.

The award-winning bakers have shops in Southwold, Aldeburgh, Norwich and Holt as well as the central bakery and bake school in Darsham and now

employ over 100 people.

Peter Elsom of letting agents Elsom Spettigue Associates said: "We were aware that Two Magpies were looking at Woodbridge, but it's important to wait for the right premises. Once we knew we had control of the subject property, we approached the baker's agents and the rest is history. From the initial viewing it took exactly two weeks to complete despite Christmas and

Covid."

Richard Bertram of Beane Wass & Box who acted for Two Magpies added: "With the recent closure of The Cake Shop, 60 Thoroughfare, there was an ideal opportunity to expand the brand and follows hard on the heels of recent openings in Holt and Blakeney." The shop itself extends to approximately 1,200 sqft. and will provide fifteen permanent jobs in the town.

On the 11th January, the Alde Valley Suffolk Family History Group (AVSFHG) deposited over thirty history books published by Pen and Sword in the Reference section of Leiston Library. These books are on loan to the Library and can be consulted on the premises by the general public, but are not to be taken out of the Library. A full list of the books deposited can be downloaded from www.avsfhg. org.uk/downloads. Shown there as 'Pen and Sword publications'.

Between 2pm-4pm on the

first Tuesday of every month, members of AVSFHG are at Leiston Library to offer free advice and guidance on family history. The Women of Sutton Hoo 7th century. She will talk about the roles and responsibilities of the women of the time and also about the significant achievements by women working there in the 20th century.

Sally's talk is entitled 'Holding the Line: The Women of Sutton Hoo' and takes place at Woodbridge Library on Thursday 17th February at 7:30pm. It's part of the programme of events organised by the Friends of Woodbridge Library (FOWL).

The story of Sutton Hoo seems to be about one man and one woman more than a thousand years apart. Or is it more accurately really about the treasure buried with one man unearthed at the request of one woman? How much do we know about Edith Pretty, the woman on whose land the treasure was uncovered? And how much is known about the society ruled over by the man, Redwald?

In February, Woodbridge Library hosts a talk about the women of Sutton Hoo. Join Sally Sibley, a National Trust volunteer who leads guided walks at Sutton Hoo, as she unfolds the story of some of the women involved with this enigmatic Anglo-Saxon royal burial site.

Using a combination of words, images and replica artefacts, Sally will describe something of the culture of the people who lived close to Sutton Hoo in the

During November and December, Woodbridge Museum remained open at the weekends with a shorter opening time of 10:30am-15:30pm. Over the holiday period, it was gratifying to see families coming in and making good use of the family corner. Small children were happy to leave clutching their colouring sheets and sporting gold stars. We intend to continue with weekend opening throughout the winter months. The museum will open for the summer season on 2nd April. The exact opening times are still to be arranged.

On Saturday 21st May, the long awaited Thomas Churchyard exhibition opens, and will run

until 1st July, opening in the afternoons.

December was, once again, a busy month for the Rotary Club of Woodbridge Deben as we assisted Santa on the Christmas sleigh.

December 5th saw us at the very successful Christmas Regatta and Market at Whisstock's Place and on Saturday 11th we were in the Thoroughfare in Woodbridge. We also spent six evenings touring Martlesham and Kesgrave. Santa had a special gift for one resident of Martlesham Heath when Rotarian Richard Boother was presented with a Paul Harris Fellowship, a Rotary award which recognises exceptional service to the club and community. In total, just over £2,500 was collected for our Charitable Trust, which

contributions or provided hours of services free of charge towards making this £350,000 infrastructure project possible.

Due for completion in the first quarter of 2022, the garden will not only provide a wonderful green place to dwell and recharge, but also offers better access from the car park to the high street, massively improves the church/community hall facilities, provides a bandstand for concerts, talks and public events, an area for concert seating, and a communal space for local markets.

But more than anything, it provides Leiston with the community hub it so desperately needs. Although the work is

The Woodbridge Charity Christmas Card Shop has had fantastic year raising funds for over twenty local and national charities.

The shop is organised by Woodbridge 41Club, and proceeds are used to support local charities and other good causes. The shop is especially important this year as many charities are facing a significant drop in donations, due to Covid.

The 41 Club organiser, Roger Parker commented: "I'm delighted that we have raised over £33,000 for a range of local and national charities. Over the past twenty-nine years, we've

After two years of consultation, design, planning and fundraising, the work of creating a magnificent community garden and thoroughfare has begun.

The community spirit, foresight and generosity of the United Church has enabled the LCLT to pull together a cabal of public-spirited supporters to make this dream a reality. Nearly fifty organisations, ranging from large public bodies to small local companies, have made financial

We start this year thinking about the plans we have for the coming year and that the Woodbridge Branch RBL will be celebrating its 100th anniversary.

To mark this occasion, we'll be holding an event on the 27th of August on Kingston playing fields. We'd like to invite charities and local stall holders to join us on the day with their own stalls and share in the celebrations.

Non-charitable stall holders will be welcome and all we ask of them is a donation to the poppy appeal.

Saxmundham Museum Quiz Night 5th February 2022 Saxmundham Museum is planning to hold its annual Quiz Night on Saturday 5th February, should conditions allow. This event has always proved popular in the past. Although sadly, the event has not been held for the past two years due to the pandemic.

Horse Society, told us of his life working with the Suffolk Punch.

He arrived at the Hollesley Stud in 1978 with a knowledge of horses but little idea of breeding, but with the help of a local vet, Ryder Davis, he soon became an expert.

Bruce entertained members with amusing anecdotes of introducing the mares to the stallion, and the subsequent birthing and feeding processes. A founder member of The Suffolk Punch Trust, Bruce advised that the Suffolk Punch must be the colour Chesnut (not misspelt) although there are seven shades of chesnut from light to dark mahogany. Unfortunately, there is a limited market now for the horse and consequently the Suffolk Punch is high on the endangered breed list.

In the UK, members of Inner Wheel support refuge centres for abused women, child centres and drop-in centres, school breakfast clubs and much more.

Inner Wheel in Great Britain and Ireland raised over £2.8 million for various charities in the two years prior to Covid. All this was carried out in the spirit of friendship and service. However, in these testing times, it's proving much more difficult to provide service to our local community and, together in friendship, raise much needed funds for local charities, but we're resolved to do what we can.

Testing, testing... Yes, we live in "testing" times. President Sally Pearson asked members to do a lateral flow test before attending our January meeting and to wear warm clothes as all the windows in the meeting room at Ufford Park Hotel would be open. She didn't know that it would be one of the coldest days so far this winter, but all willingly complied. Testing times yes, as decisions were taken by the club committee to postpone a lunch planned for 10th January to mark International Inner Wheel Day, and our annual quiz so ably devised by club member Deirdre, and presented by her husband Tom Griffin has been postponed from February to a date yet to be decided. Both of these events would have raised much needed funds for charities, but, for now and with fingers crossed, planning for a Fashion Show in April will continue. The Memory Café, run in conjunction with the Woodbridge and Woodbridge Deben Rotary Clubs and held on the last Wednesday of each month at Woodbridge FC, with appropriate health and safety measures in place, will continue to be held for the time being.

Members marked the passing of a long-standing member, Joan Hutchinson, who died before Christmas. It was also with great sadness that members heard of the resignation of a member.

Despite Covid, Woodbridge Chess Club have had a terrific start to the season, leading Division 2 of the Suffolk League with fourteen points out of a possible twenty. Our closest rivals Bury B are on eight points from twenty and, although a number of teams have matches in hand, promotion to Division 1 seems more and more likely.

Particular congratulations go to Dan Such who has won all his games so far despite being considerably outgraded. In November, Woodbridge also won the U6000 East Anglian Chess Union Team Championship with Sam Gaffney and Harry Elman completing hat-tricks. Not bad for the youngest club in Suffolk!

Woodbridge Town Council Budget 2021-22 Woodbridge Cruising Club Following on from the Council's investment in Kingston Field during this financial year, which saw a new pedestrian bridge, enhanced play equipment and (being installed during January) a new hardsurfaced pathway, the Council is considering making substantial investment in Elmhurst Park.

In conjunction with East Suffolk Council's bid to the Government's Changing Places Toilet Fund, this Council is

considering allocating £20,000 to enable such a facility to be provided in Elmhurst Park.

In addition, the Council is considering upgrading the existing toilets, and increasing the range of fully-accessible children's play equipment. Funding is also being allocated for a sensory garden.

Whilst unable to find additional land for new allotments, the Council is considering the creation of a community garden, and having already jointly-funded

design work on a 20mph scheme for Woodbridge, is likely to fund its installation.

Inevitably there is likely to be a small increase in Council Tax, to cover these major works as well as inflation; this is currently forecast as less than 20p per week for a Band D household. #Justonebottle campaign comes to a refill shop near you!

Do you feel overwhelmed by the problem of climate change and wonder what you can do to be part of the solution? Do you believe that small actions can have an impact?

The 'Just one bottle' campaign was launched on January 1st 2022 by many of the zero-waste and refill shops in Suffolk and around the country. Here in Woodbridge, Cupboard Love is promoting this campaign to encourage people to try refilling just one bottle for the year. We hope to encourage people who want to do their bit to help reduce plastic waste to just start small. Making big, drastic changes to our shopping habits can sometimes be overwhelming and may not be sustainable so go for 'Just one bottle' instead - maybe your washing-up liquid, hand soap, shampoo or conditioner. If each household did this, imagine the impact it would make! There are about 7,000 homes in Woodbridge, so that could save 7,000 bottles from landfill!

And if you find success with this one small change, then next time, take another bottle for refilling!

By reusing bottles that have already been produced, we help to reduce the need for virgin plastic,

thus protecting the valuable oil reserves and sending a message to the petro-chemical industry that customers want change.

It's often cheaper to refill your existing bottles and if you only need a small amount at a time, that's also fine!

The household liquids stocked by the local refill shops are largely British-made using cruelty-free and plant-based ingredients.

They're just as effective as regular cleaning liquids, without the palm oil, synthetic scents and harsh chemical ingredients. They'll be better for your skin and general health.

Because these liquids are produced in this country, there's a reduced carbon footprint, especially as several of the suppliers offer a closed-loop system whereby the plastic containers are returned, cleaned and reused - so there's not even any need for recycling.

Many members of the public feel powerless against the effects of climate change and that they're not able to contribute in the fight against it. The rates of climate anxiety are rising fast. This campaign is about empowering individuals and showing people that together, with one small change, we can ALL contribute

to the fight against climate change.

You can find Cupboard Love at Woodbridge Market on Thursdays or Framlingham Market on Tuesdays - Where you can also refill your bags and jars with foodstuffs such as pasta, rice, lentils, nuts and dried fruit. Although most boats are now lifted out for that essential winter maintenance, and sailing is at a minimum, there's still an active social on shore programme and members are currently enjoying Wednesday suppers and weekend lunchtime bars. The club are lucky to have a well ventilated hall, where all functions can safely take place.

Woodbridge Cruising Club members celebrated the festive season in style with the Commodore's Christmas Party.

Members enjoyed a sumptuous three course meal, with duck, followed by a choice of nine delicious home-made puddings.

Many thanks to Janet Sparrow and her wonderful team who arranged such a lovely evening, and the choir who provided such fun entertainment. The New Year's Day walk was well attended by both members and dogs, and was an enjoyable stroll around Woodbridge organised by Bram, followed by welcoming, homemade hot soup.

by Paul Bragg on Biscay Harbours, this was an amusing and illuminating talk; very inspiring for those who have not yet visited the Biscay Ports and

bringing back fond memories for those who have. Paul gave a personalised view of sailing the west coast of France, the best ports and anchorages, with numerous helpful hints, from weather apps to the best boulangeries.

The Sunday talk programme of 2022 is well under way, with talks on the RNLI, South Africa in the Second World War, and Anglo Saxon ship building.

Additional activities include Jetsam, the ukulele band with a Beatles concert in aid of the very worthwhile Woolverstone Project.

Members are already looking forward to cruises for 2022, and Andy the cruise captain is working hard to arrange these. Planned ports include well-loved favourites such as Walton Backwaters, Ramsgate, Southold and London. Cruising in company is one of the best reasons for joining the club.

After over fifteen years of successfully providing the awardwinning PASTEL Saturday Club service for young adults with autism and learning disabilities, the volunteer directors have been forced to call it a day due to the enforced closure since March 2020 resulting from the continuing Covid pandemic. During this time, the changing circumstances for everyone would have meant a complete relaunch of the service, with all the associated funding and recruitment demands.

Prior to forming the PASTEL Saturday Club (which operated for five hours, twice a month), PASTEL members and their parents had no opportunity for respite other than relatively expensive alternatives. As such, PASTEL met the needs of both members and their families, and is therefore a great loss to both.

Although most members came from the Saxmundham area, such was the attraction of the service that some came from as far afield as Ipswich and Felixstowe, eagerly supported by their parents.

As well as reducing social isolation and providing stimulating activities, clients were able to make new friends and boost their selfconfidence - effectively, forming an alternative 'family' outside their home and school environment.

The wide range of group activities included public performances of Morris dancing, a hip-hop music and dance theatre event, a 'set' at the Sax Music Festival and a drama production involving

The success of the vaccine rollout has helped keep the Omicron variant at bay, and I am hopeful that we can begin looking forward to a happier and more prosperous 2022.

However, the winter months are likely to be challenging for many, as once again, the UK is facing an energy price squeeze with home heating and energy bills set to rise.

There are two main reasons why the UK energy market is in crisis - both can be pinned on previous policy failures, but neither is directly related to the UK's push for renewables. The energy price spike is due to the UK's reliance on imported gas, not its reliance on renewables.

Gas accounts for about two fifths of UK energy consumption and, as the dominant source of home heating, effectively sets energy prices. Markets set the gas price and as Britain imports almost all of its gas, those markets are determined by global supply and demand. Additionally, UK nuclear capacity has dwindled,

and coal is, for good reason, a dirty word. Britain's base load, in other words, the energy on which we can always rely, has become increasingly dependent on justin-time supplies of liquid natural gas, imported into our homes via inter-connectors with the continent. This is not a strategy for long term energy security, and it needs to change.

Energy security is expensive, but I'm pleased that the Government is finally getting on with the job of passing new laws to allow vital investment into new UK based carbonneutral forms of electricity. This may result in a short term rise in bills but will pay dividends in the long run - investing now will improve our energy security and make us less vulnerable to energy price rises and volatility in the future.

The other policy failure results from the way in which the energy price cap is implemented.

Many smaller energy suppliers are going out of business as they are forced to absorb price rises

and cannot change prices for a six-month period. This reduces competition in the energy market and in the longer term, further increases prices for consumers.

At the very least the Ofgem cap should be set every three months and I shall be doing all I can to make the case in Parliament for this important change in how the energy price cap operates.

As household bills rise again, the wrong decision would be to scrap environmental levies which only accounted for 23% of energy bills in August, compared with 34% for the wholesale electricity costs. It is the jump in these wholesale energy prices since August that has been the problem and not the green levies which provide an investment in keeping energy prices lower for consumers in the future.

Ultimately, changes in both how we produce as well as how we use energy are needed to meet the government's net zero targets and, just as importantly, to keep household energy prices down in the long term.

The Cut digital archive The Cut arts centre in Halesworth, Suffolk, has successfully fundraised £16,000 from Arts Council England and budget from the local authority Bounce Back fund to upskill employees and volunteers and to create a digital archive of artists talks and exhibitions.

Over two-hundred artists have shown at The Cut and there have been fifteen group shows since 2003. Not all of them have adequate archiving, so The Cut hope to develop and produce a comprehensive archive and build on it with the continual addition of upcoming artists and exhibitions.

Many of the artists exhibiting at The Cut go on to the Royal Academy and further prestigious international shows.

Twelve local artists have been selected for online interviews and

filming in their studios. These will sit on The Cut YouTube channel with provision within the ACE funding to upgrade The Cut website. Artists Gina Medcalf, Mary Webb (who has paintings in Rhythm & Geometry at the Sainsbury Centre), Coco Crampton, Fabian Peake, Charles Hewlings, Johann Don Daniel, Simon Carter, Steven Lewis, Derek Morris, and Tony Casement (Chair of the Board of Trustees at The Cut) are confirmed for the project along with Bill Jackson, the last artist to exhibit at the venue before the third lockdown. The final artist in the series will be Laurence Edwards, who recently erected Yoxman on the A12 at Cockfield Hall in early 2022.

Kasia Posen (local artist and lead on the project) explained:

"It's been a huge privilege to interview all The Cut Digital artists. A very unique opportunity to discuss their art practices in depth, to learn about and share their expertise and diverse talents."

Mary Webb (one of the participating artists) said: "A really imaginative initiative.

Setting up an archive on these lines will establish an invaluable resource not only for artists but also for those seeking to identify artists within different disciplines.

It's at the same time a history of The Cut, and all the vision and effort that has gone into making it such a unique undertaking."

Tree's company It's time to give your garden some love this month by giving it a bit of a tidy up and a quick assessment of any initial winter damage. There'll still be frosts and winter weather ahead but at least you can plan and prepare for the spring waiting to arrive. If one of your gardening new year's resolutions was to plant a tree then now is the time to make that thought become a reality.

In the coldest months of the year, you can buy bare rooted or root balled trees which are cheaper and establish better.

These are trees and shrubs that are lifted straight from the ground and should be planted by the end of February whilst they are still dormant before there are any signs of growth (or by the end of March, possible into April, in the north of Scotland). Bare root and root balled trees can only be bought when the weather is cold because once it warms up, the root ball dries out too quickly unless planted in the ground. By planting in winter, it means that by spring and early summer, trees will have benefited from optimum growing conditions and had the opportunity to establish their root system whilst dormant.

Your planting hole should be no deeper than the roots, but at least three times the diameter of the root ball. It's a good idea to soak bare-rooted trees for about thirty-minutes before planting.

Place the tree in the planting hole so the first flare of roots on the stem are level with the soil surface.

If you plant the tree too deep, it can result in rot and disease. You may need to also insert a stake for top heavy or larger trees. Refill the planting hole, firm gently and water in. Drought stress is common in newly planted trees so make sure you keep watering throughout the growing season.

The quantity required will vary with soil type but thirty to fifty litres per square metre (four to six watering cans) each week in dry weather will do the trick.

If you're growing your own vegetables, then now is a good time to sow lettuce seeds, both under cover and outside. If you start now, it'll give you a continuous supply that can be harvested throughout the year.
