Sunflowers is a four-bedded home from home for four children and young people with profound disabilities and complex health needs. The children and young people are supported by a team of nurses, health care support workers, therapists, teachers and admin staff. We have been in Cottenham since 2013 and have recently moved to a bungalow at the Histon end of the village, which is fantastic! The bungalow has been fully adapted by Andrew Turner and his brilliant team to make sure that the space is both child and disability friendly.

We love being based in Cottenham and have found the villagers to be

kind, supportive and welcoming.

We especially love the Second Cottenham Brownies, Community Café, the Recreational Ground, the Co-op, the horses in Broad Lane, The Hop Bind and Cottenham Club who have fundraised for us, Cottenham High Street GP practice, Cottenham Dental Surgery, Tom Wykes aka Tom of All Trades, Barkers and Stephen’s Baguettes for feeding us and All Saints’ Church Hall for giving us training space. All of these people have gone above and beyond to support us (we apologise if we’ve forgotten anybody!)

Thank you for helping us to feel very much part of Cottenham.

Fen Edge Festival 2022 The Festival will take place on Cottenham Village Green, the Village College grounds and the Community Centre on 24th, 25th and 26th of June.

We have all your favourite attractions, along with some new ones. See if you can improve your handicap at the mini-golf, test how long you survive in Total Wipeout or try your hand at urban art in our Grafitti workshops.

This year we are aiming to be carbon neutral. Reusable cups are back, and we’ve asked all our suppliers to provide sustainable products where possible. We have calculated our ‘carbon footprint’ and will offset emissions through a certified treeplanting scheme. Find out more, in

the ‘Eco Zone’.

A beautiful spring morning, 30 enthusiastic volunteers and 121 very keen parkrunners made for a fantastic inaugural junior parkrun at Cottenham Recreation Ground on the 24th of April.

For over half of those running, the first Cottenham event was also their first taste of a junior parkrun, and it was particularly poignant that two of those first-timers had arrived in the village just a few days before, on the Homes for Ukraine scheme.

Almost 50 volunteers of all ages have stepped up to help make this event happen, including three who are volunteering as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award.

Taking place at 9am every Sunday, junior parkrun starts with a fun warmup for children and adults alike. In total, almost 200 children have now run, walked or even skipped their way around two laps of the Recreation

Ground’s third field. Why not join them next Sunday?

“Having a junior parkrun on the doorstep of so many of our children at our primary school is fantastic.

Rotary International, with the WHO, aims to eradicate polio world-wide within the next few years. Pakistan had, for the first time, no cases of the wild polio virus in 2021, thanks, in no small part, to the wonderful Rotary donations and volunteer vaccinators! If this continues, it will leave Afghanistan as the only country where it is endemic - a far cry from when Rotary first persuaded the WHO to support this vaccination campaign.

The infrastructure has also been widely used for Covid vaccinations.

Vive Le Jumelage – Let’s reconnect with our French Friends

Did you know that the Fen Edge Villages of Cottenham, Landbeach, Rampton, Waterbeach and Willingham are twinned with Earlier this year our local nurseryman, Joe Avrillé, in the Loire Valley, France? is a really suitable weekend to reestablish our close link with France.

It’s also been a long time since the community of English twinners have met and we cannot wait until November for the fun to restart.

We are holding a Summer Picnic on 16th July at Waterbeach Tillage Hall to mark the French National Holiday – Bastille Day. Everyone who is interested in being part of the twinning is welcome at this informal event which will run from 3pm till 6pm.

Please bring your own refreshments and join in with the fun and games (all of which will have a French flavour!).

As always, the association is keen to welcome new members so, if you are interested in helping our cultural exchanges, as a host, as a visitor or simply with interest and moral support, please get in touch. Councillor update Further to the uncontested election on 5th May, we are pleased to welcome Anne Moller, Rachel Myer and Alison Wedgbury to the Council.

Toddler playground replacement project The playground invitation to tender went online on Monday 9th May for a six-week period ending on 17th June. After that, the Playgrounds Working Party will consider the design and build tenders we receive and hope to report back with a preferred option at July’s full council.

The Working Party considered the option of two sites for the toddler equipment suggested by our consultant as possible solutions to taking space from the recreation ground. We concluded that the space in the main playground between the climbing frame and the trim tail was too small. The Working Party therefore decided on the original square site outside the nursery. This area has now been

tidied up and levelled ready for use.

We have extended the area slightly further into the recreation ground by 1 metre, to allow for an underground electricity cable. The site will now be 20 metres by 20 metres from the existing pathway along the side of the nursery. The cycle shelter will remain in place.

Following a consultation with residents and users of the play area, we have asked that designs include, in the following order preference: a multi climbing frame, swing, slide (not tube), and a playhouse. These items can be included in various combinations. We do not require them all to be free standing. We want our playground to be as inclusive as possible and have good accessibility for wheelchairs.

No Mow May Throughout May we stopped cutting grass on various sites on Tenison Manor, WARG Field (Histon Rd) and on verges near the Village Green to support local biodiversity, with a particular focus on pollinators such as bees. ‘No Mow May’ is run

by Plantlife, an organisation that promotes the maintenance and

growth of wildflowers, plants and fungi. According to Plantlife, more than 700 species of wildflowers grow on road verges in the UK. Cutting the grass less often will help reduce carbon emissions, as well as providing habitats for pollinators, such as bees, to thrive.

Forthcoming roadworks

Cottenham Community Transport Scheme We are due to receive a substantial amount of s106 funding from the new developments for a community transport scheme. This is to be used towards a fixed timetable and demand responsive community vehicle serving the new developments off Rampton and Oakington Roads and should include services to Oakington Guided Bus Stop and Waterbeach station but could also be used for other journeys in and around the village. We are in the very early stages of exploring how this scheme could work and would welcome any interested residents to join the working group, set up to draft a proposal, etc. If you would like to know more please contact the Assistant Clerk: asstclerk@cottenhampc.org.uk

Cadent Gas are working on Lambs Lane from 13th June to 26th August.

There is now a considerable backlog of works all requiring road space.

The Cadent Gas push back other works such as road resurfacing, the

roundabout, Histon Road cycle path improvements and Rampton Road traffic calming. County Councillor Gough is setting up a meeting with Streetworks to discuss a sensible approach to the scheduling all this work. However, it is inevitable that there will be disruption on the south side of Cottenham for a period of time if these improvements are to be made.

Major developments The long-awaited new pavement from the Persimmon site connecting to the Bellway site on Oakington Road should now be complete. The last residents are due to move in during June. Once this happens, Bellway will work at getting the roads up to scratch.

Bellway are being pressed hard to

produce a schedule for the Histon Road cyclepath works. They now need to book the road space – this will be impacted by Cadent doing works in the vicinity over the summer – see text in green band.

Tilia are looking to start working on site (on the East side of Rampton Road) at the end of May/early June.

Things are by no means ‘back to normal’ but we continue to look at interesting and alternative ways to support each other and bring people together in a safe way.

Carers Week 2022 Carers Week 2022 is on the way from 6th to 12th June. The week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges people looking after a family or friend face and recognise the contribution they make to communities.

The theme for Carers Week 2022 is ‘Make caring visible, valued and supported’. caringtogether.org

Well served I would like to thank Eileen Wilson and Neil Gough who both stood down as District Councillors for Cottenham and Rampton for the great service they delivered these villages in their time in office. They were both elected in 2018.

They both took to their elected roles with gusto tackling casework on behalf of residents, attending parish council meetings, being active on various committees, participating in council meetings and, in Neil’s case, holding a cabinet position.

They really came into their own when Covid struck and lockdown affected all of our lives. They went

way beyond their brief as councillors to help to organise the support activities for people adversely affected. They became the public faces of a group of volunteers who worked tirelessly to make a difficult time much more bearable for many people. Their contribution on that front will be remembered for a long time.

Neil will continue to serve as County Councillor for Cottenham, Rampton and Willingham while Eileen will begin to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

Their successors, Annika Osborne and John Loveluck have big shoes to fill, and I wish them luck in their new roles.

CPS Community Outreach Project As life at Cottenham Primary School has returned to normal, we’ve been able to resurrect various initiatives and projects we had started work on, back in 2020. One of these is the CPS Community Outreach Project.

The project launched in January and involves each class in Years 1-6 working on an assigned project with an outside group or organisation. The projects have a definite objective; one that the whole class work together on. Each year group are working on a related theme (e.g, people in need), with each class focussing on a discrete project. We have dedicated curriculum time for classes to work on their Action Plans and already the children have achieved great results and gained valuable experiences.

Children in Years 1 and 2 made cards for the residents of the care homes

in the village and then a group of children delivered them. They have also recorded songs and poems to entertain the residents. Children in Year 3 have made contact with Jimmy’s and had a visit from one of their staff; they are now working together on their project. Children in Year 6 have the focus of “Saying Thank you” and have already made and given cards to our refuse collectors and delivery drivers. They have delivered gifts to the shops in the village and also created a Thank You banner for our local fire fighters.

We are really excited about our Community Outreach Project and believe it is a fantastic way of ensuring that children understand the importance of community, and the need to ‘give something back.’

On Sunday 29th May we held our Cottenham Colts tournament which was attended by over 800 children! It was such a great day and was really lovely to watch the children from U6’s to U14’s from all over the county with their friends, playing the game with the right attitude. We also hosted a taster session for the U5’s – this was really well attended, and we hope to see more of them next season.

We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our sponsors, volunteers, coaches, referees, children and their families for supporting us. We had fantastic feedback from the day, and we are already planning and looking forward to next year.

Currently the Club has one team in the Cambs Kershaw League Div 1 North.

The team finished the 2021/22 season really strongly after having to play our final two games away against the top two sides, Debden and Melbourn. We drew at Debden which put them at the top of the table but Melbourn have overhauled them by beating us a week later. It wasn’t to be though as we ran out 2-1 winners at Melbourn, ending their Championship hopes.

A really great effort from the team which gave us a 4th place finish and the possibility of promotion which has yet to be confirmed.

Hearty congratulations are due to all the team, which has got stronger and more confident throughout the season, and to Harry West (Manager) and Toby Burkett (Assistant Manager)

who have done a magnificent job in their first season at the helm.

The welcome return to full contact rugby in the autumn saw Haverhill 69-0 Cottenham Renegades do well in Cantabrigians 2 74-0 Eastern Counties Division 1 West.

As the final games were played, Renegades managed to sneak past Shelford 3 into second place behind Cambridge 3. The last two games saw record-breaking score lines with Renegades beating Haverhill 69-0 and Cantabrigians 2 74-0.

This was followed by another brutal defeat from North Walsham when they came to Cottenham (12—85). The following week Renegades travelled to North Walsham and although the home side won in the end (54-45), the losing dressing room was in high spirits after that game. Sudbury came to Cottenham and without their first team enhancements were beaten 29-25 in a riveting game.

This was followed by a closely fought battle with Ipswich which they won 18-24 (having pulled out of the first game against them). The last game of the season saw Wymondham come to Cottenham and a good win for Renegades who beat them 38-14 in a dazzling display of flowing rugby from both sides.

So, Cottenham Renegades came second in the Eastern Counties West Division 1 West League and third in the following shield competition. As a result of this excellent performance, Renegades have been promoted to Counties 2 Eastern Counties league so new challenges for next season!

Use Your Heart Raffle Hi! We’re thirteen-year-old Suzannah White and Maya Haigh. For around five months now we have been organising a raffle to raise money for Addenbrooke’s Hospital Paediatric unit. After deciding we wanted to do a charity event, we discussed how we had both been very ill at Addenbrooke’s for a long time when we were younger. This brought us to the decision that we could raise money for the hospital that supported us for many years as we would like to give back. We also want to help care for children and their families who are in the same situation as we were, as this cause is very special to us. We are aiming to raise £1000-£2000, and we are hopeful that whatever this money buys will help get these children and their families through the difficult times they face.

Operation Pondlife Back in the day we had a relatively large garden wildlife pond, lots of frogs and aquatic plants. But, we also had small children, so with safety rather than nature in mind, I filled in the pond, turfed over the patch and we had some good kickabouts for many a year with the children. The children are grown; time to resurrect the pond.

Sustainable Cottenham

We had good weather for our spring litter-pick and were pleased to find that the majority of the village streets were quite litter-free, so we could concentrate on problem areas. These were: 1 - the verges of all the roads leading away from the village - these were pretty bad!

2 - the Pound - that’s the tiny car park nearly opposite the Post Office.
