Cottenham Newsletter The Cottenham Newsletter is produced and distributed entirely by volunteers. If you are interested in doing something new in 2023 and would like to join the team then please get in touch. The Cottenham Newsletter is funded by the revenue raised from advertising and donations.

Ho Ho Ho...

Dear Cottenham ’d like to begin this issue of the Cottenham Newsletter with a huge thank you to Peter Hughes. Peter has been part of the team for many years, responsible for distributing the Cottenham Newsletter throughout the village. He will be sadly missed, so from all of us here at the Newsletter, thanks for everything Peter! I’ll be picking up the slack, but we always welcome volunteers to help deliver the Newsletter, especially as the village continues to grow. If it’s something that you think you could do in your spare time. please email me at: cottenhamnewsletter@gmail.com One suggestion to make delivering the Newsletter easier on our volunteers is to provide them with trolleys. If you’re a local business owner and would be interested in sponsoring the purchase of some trolleys, we’d love to hear from you and we will happily acknowledge your generosity in the Newsletter and on the trolleys themselves. If the Submissions for the February/ Newsletter delivery can be speeded up in any way, I know that many of you will be happy! The Cottenham Theatre Festival 2024 is a new concept that I hope will garner support and interest from local theatre companies. It will be open to any local theatre companies, directors, playwrights and actors.

Cottenham Newsletter | December / January 2024

If you or your drama group would like to enter the competition, the rules are simple: Each play must be no longer than 45 mins (a one-act play is generally perfect) with a minimum of two people in the cast and a maximum of ten. We would like five or more groups to take part over two nights in Summer 2024. This will be an outdoor event inside a big top marquee on the Village Green. Refreshment stalls will be provided and we hope to offer two great nights out for families. Ticket sales will support the event itself and the marketing for the following year. If you are a playwright, director or member of a theatre company/local drama company please (in the first instance) email me at the above address and book your space. The spaces are limited. This will be an adjudicated event, with prizes and an award ceremony, including a special guest judge! So, if your passion is motors or theatres, please get in touch! You may want to offer your services backstage at either event! There’s a job for everyone. Please state your interest in the email subject box – MOTORS or THEATRES – or call me direct: Mark Tunstall m: 07576 247402 cottenhamnewsletter@gmail.com

Circus Cortex – The review

SCDC bin collection dates for Cottenham:

Well! What a night was had by this lowly scribe! My partner Michelle and I attended the Saturday 7 October evening performance of Circus Cortex in Cottenham. The loose storyline of the show is that there is a Masquerade Ball at midnight and everyone on stage is trying to get to it. And so the fun begins ... The Tic Toc Clowns are led by a Ring Master Clown (of sorts), holding a big clock! This compounded a sense of urgency to all of the acts. And what acts! The Big Top itself was beautifully decorated inside with amazing lighting displays, smoke machine and a beautiful array of colour! The ladies who form a Greek Chorus of sorts throughout the evening were clad in excellent costumes, I particularly liked the Pierrette costumes. Comedia dell’arte was certainly an inspiration for the show, which Circus Manager, Paul Archer, confirmed when we spoke on the night. Commedia dell’arte – ‘comedy of the profession’ – was an early form of professional theatre, originating from Italy, that was popular throughout Europe between the 16th and 18th centuries. There were many standout acts that night. My favourite was the tight-rope walk, performed by Paul Archer’s daughter, Ksenia Archer. Ksenia graduated from the Stratford Upon Avon Grammar School and then literally ran away and joined the Circus. Luckily her Dad owned it! The Circus boasts an international cast, including Czech, UK, Polish and Ukraine performers. I was treated to an evening of BMX tricks, mime, acrobatics, high-wire, balancing acts, wonderful trick unicycling from a charming family act (Victor and

Yulia Gorodekski and their son Valdis!) There was suitably raucous music and dance. The tableaux formed by the dancers were slick, perfectly timed, strong and triumphant. The movement was a barrage of poses interconnected by intricate moves and balancing acts, pratfalls and cannon work. Eye-catching and inspiring. After the show, Paul explained that the show changes annually, with a different story and many different acts every time. They were heading off to Stevenage and Peterborough after this weekend and then on around the world after that. Michelle had to hold me back (as usual), as I ran off to join them! They will be back next year, so I recommend you go and see them! to as the ‘Baker Street Irregulars’ after the location of its London headquarters. It was also known as ‘Churchill’s Secret Army’ or the ‘Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare’. The organisation directly employed or controlled more than 13,000 people, about 3,200 of whom were women. Secure and well-organised radio communications between SOE headquarters and agents in the field were crucial, as living and operating secretly behind enemy lines was extremely hazardous. If discovered, agents risked arrest, torture and execution. Of the 470 agents sent into France, 118 failed to return. Set in June 1997, the play ‘A Cold Supper Behind Harrods’ deals with the intertwining stories of three former agents of the SOE

from World War II as they prepare to give a televised tribute to their friend Patricia, a fourth operative who met an untimely death at the hands of the Gestapo. Each of the former operatives, two men and one woman, carried out a different function during the war and each now carries their own burden of guilt. The play is inspired by real events. The Director, Nick Warburton, explains why he wanted to bring ‘A Cold Supper Behind Harrods’ to the stage: ‘For quite some time I’ve been looking for a wellwritten play with a close focus on a cast of well-drawn and contrasting characters. This script offers exactly that. I’m relishing the opportunity to explore its world of moral complexity, in finding its psychological truths and its resonance for today’s uncertain world. This is a thoughtprovoking piece of drama that has never, to our knowledge, been performed in Cambridge. The play has strong characters and even stronger themes, leading to questions about our individual responsibilities in a time of crisis.’ ‘A Cold Supper Behind Harrods’ runs from 12–16 December 2023 at the ADC Theatre, Cambridge. Cottenham Baptist Church

The Real Christmas Grotto began in 2020 during lockdown when churches were closed and there was little opportunity to enjoy Christmas traditions. During that time the Baptist Church in Cottenham was turned into a grotto that retold the Christmas story, along with real characters, a stable and even animal smells! Since 2020 we have run this event every year, telling the story of Jesus’ birth in creative ways as people walk around the grotto. There are actors inviting you into the Christmas story, film clips, activities to join in with along the way, snacks and a place to pause and be still. Every year is different, and you can walk around at your own speed, either on your own or in a group. This year the grotto will once again take place at the Baptist Church on Saturday 16th, Friday 22nd and Saturday

23rd December from 4.00 to 6.00 p.m. It is free for everyone, and slots can be booked through the church website: www.cottenhambaptist.org.uk Don’t miss out on a chance to enter into the story and enjoy the adventure of Christmas! Local Council Award Scheme In 2022 we achieved the Foundation Level LCAS status. The award serves as a tool for councils to demonstrate that they are operating at a national professional standard set by the sector and are dedicated to delivering services at a high standard. Over the past few months we have been looking at our processes and how we can achieve the Quality award. Quality councils go above

The bar team is thrilled to welcome Sapph Grant as our new Bar Supervisor. Sapph brings a wealth of fresh ideas and valuable experience, in addition to her exceptional organisational skills. Sports News Cottenham Renegades Rugby Clubs across East Anglia are shocked and saddened at the untimely death of Arturas Rudys, 27, who played for Wisbech Rugby Club in Cambridgeshire. During a recent game a chest-to-chest collision involving Arturas seems to have caused a cardiac arrest. Despite strenuous efforts to resuscitate him, including the Air Ambulance medic, he died at the scene. Everyone at Cottenham Renegades was very sad to hear the news. We had two good games against Wisbech last year and were soundly beaten in both. Wisbech were then promoted into a higher league this year. We send our condolences to Arturas’s family and everyone at Wisbech. Renegades have had a difficult start to the season with two away games not played because of lack of players. Each

one cost five points so Renegades are bottom of the table as I write. However, we have had a flurry of new talent joining us in the last few weeks, so hopefully, things will improve for the rest of the season. If you fancy trying your hand at rugby, Renegades are always on the lookout for new players. You may have played at school or with a club a while back and would like to get back into it. Or maybe you have never played but think you might like to try it out. Either way, you can be sure of a great welcome if you come along for a try out. We take the game seriously but having fun is what it’s really about. Take a look at the Renegades website (http://renegadesrugby.net/) and come along to watch a game and meet the players. You will get a warm welcome. Eddy Murphy

Cottenham United FC At the time of writing Cottenham Utd FC are a quarter of the way through the 23/24 season in the Cambs Senior B league and are currently sitting mid table with 3 wins, 1 draw and 3 defeats. We are finding our way in the new league, after our promotion last season and are on target with our objectives for the team this season to establish ourselves in the Senior B league. With a few recent new signings, we are in a good position to push on and climb the league. We are always on the lookout for new players, so if you are interested in playing senior football then please get in touch with us via our email: cottenhamunitedfc@hotmail. com or check out our website: www. cottenhamunitedfc.co.uk Twitter/X and Facebook accounts for further information about the club. Christmas car parking

Woodgreen Pets Charity

Rotary Club of Cambridge South has been running Christmas car parking at Woodgreen is a charity dedicated to two sites in Cambridge for 25 years and helping pets and their people. As well has raised over £300,000 in the last 10 as taking in and rehoming pets from years, mainly for local charities. its 43-acre centre in Cambridgeshire, The car parks are at Lensfield Road Woodgreen also provides a range of and Tennis Court Road (just before the services to help pet owners – including right-hand turn for the Grand Arcade free behavioural advice, pet health car park). All of your parking fee goes to and wellbeing checks, financial support charity (two grants have been made to towards veterinary bills (subject to Fen Edge charities in recent years). assessment) and much more. In this As well as taking advantage of the parking, issue of Cottenham Newsletter, why not consider volunteering too? This is they’re here to answer some a fun and fulfilling activity (and sometimes common questions about a cold one!) but we need more volunteers rehoming a pet. – please sign up for a time slot or two on the How many pets does Woodgreen following dates: rehome? 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, 23, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 December. Last year, the charity opened its doors to more than 2,200 dogs, For more information go to: www.cambridgecats and small animals, including southrotary.org.uk 300 strays with nowhere else to turn. Many of these pets were abandoned Mike Smith, Rotary Club of Cambridge and neglected, leaving them with South smithmichaelstanley@hotmail.com serious medical conditions and complex behavioural issues. Others simply need a new home because their owners couldn’t keep them anymore. How does Woodgreen work with stray dogs? Woodgreen has contracts in place with four local councils, meaning they are the holding kennels for any stray dogs in the area. These dogs are often the most vulnerable and scared, and the charity’s dedicated team are available 24-7 to provide safe shelter, emergency veterinary treatment and care. For the first seven days, Woodgreen will search for the dog’s owners using any available information on their microchip, as well as lost and found websites and local Facebook Groups. If an owner can’t be found in seven days, legal ownership of

the dog transfers to Woodgreen and they can begin the process of matching them with a loving new home. How does Woodgreen match pets with new homes? Getting a new pet is a big decision, and it’s important to make the right choice. Woodgreen always starts with the pet’s needs, making sure they’re the right fit for a new owner based on any medical needs, training requirements, and the environment they need to be healthy and happy. If you’re not sure what type of pet would be right for you, Woodgreen can help you find the right match. How do I apply to rehome with Woodgreen? The rehoming process at Woodgreen is entirely online. The first step is to visit the website to see which pets are looking for new homes, and fill in an application form if there’s a pet you’re interested in. Each application will be assessed against the pet’s individual needs. If you’re a potential match for a pet, Woodgreen will be in touch and arrange for you to meet them. The team is only small, and unfortunately Woodgreen can’t reply to every person who applies to rehome a pet. For more information: www.woodgreen.org.uk

In addition to regularly including photos of Old Cottenham, I plan to bring you excerpts from Horace Gautrey’s diary which I have in my collection and which I have just finished transcribing after 22 years! Horace was a local farmer and seed merchant whose diary entries span 1903 to 1914, then restart in 1932 and finish in 1957. Brenda Gautrey Way is named after a variety of strawberry which was developed by Horace’s cousin, Harry Gautrey, and named after his daughter Brenda. As we are heading towards winter, or as the Old Boys used to say, ‘winter draws on’, I thought I would start by showing you some winter scenes of the village from years gone by.

The following extract from Horace Gautrey’s diary charts the severe winter weather experienced in 1946–47 which eventually led to the terrible flooding in the Fens and East Anglia 1947 Monday 6th January Piercing cold wind and frost. Began to snow at 3 o’clock and continued to 8 o’clock. Wednesday 29th January Another fall of snow and a very sharp frost, the sharpest of the season. Thermometer stood at 15oF [-9oC]outside. Wednesday 12th February Many roads in the country are blocked and food is taken to villages by air. Monday 24th. February. Frost very sharp with thermometer standing at 11oF [-11oC]. Wednesday 5th March A heavy fall of snow with frost and a dull sky later with light snow through the day. I am sixty five years of age and I have never known such a long and late period of arctic conditions with the very low temperature every night. Snow falling during the evening. Thursday 6th March Deepest snow of the season and colder with a heavy sky and frost. A very heavy fall of snow, nothing like it has occurred in my lifetime, it is on some of the window sills over a foot deep and half way up the lower panes of the windows, people are walking in the tracks of the bus to get along, scarcely any thaw is taking place. Elsworth and Knapwell are cut off from communication. Some bus services were stopped, 9 inches of snow fell in Cambridge, all roads to Ely are impassible, the bus to Willingham could not get to Rampton and with much help was reversed back to Cottenham. Friday 7th March Very sharp frost for time of the year, 14oF [-10oC]. Roads are like ice, people have skated on them. Monday 10th March A thaw although a sunless day, most of the snow has gone off the roofs. Raining fast in the late

evening and a light frost afterwards. The falls of snow amounted to 28 inches. In Cambridge £7,000 was spent in cleaning up the streets and 300 tons of salt was used on the streets. Thursday 13th March It became milder as the day went on which melted much of the snow. Victor Smith brought his cattle here because the floods were getting up to where they were. Friday 14th March Fine with a very slight frost but no rain. Land in North Fen is flooded and Thoday’s house on Histon Road has water in the rooms. Saturday 15th March A sharp frost for the time of year, the thermometer at 28 oF [-2oC]. Nearly every field between Cottenham and Cambridge has water standing on it. Sunday 16th March Terrible gale. Before it was light I had a ring from B Wyatt that the floods have reached his place and his cattle are standing in water, I told him that he can bring some of them here. Monday 17th March Terrible floods, people are leaving their homes, cattle are moved. Tuesday 18th March A fine morning and not cold, indications of rain. The policeman has told all the people in Cottenham Fen to move their livestock because the river bank is broken at Over. Wednesday 19th March Very grave news in the papers about the extent of floods. The people evacuated from Cottenham Fen spent the night in the Ebenezer Chapel. Chambers of North fen has his cattle in Church End farm. River banks are bursting and flooding thousands of acres of fen land.

Ralph notes: When the thaw came and the snow melted, the water couldn’t soak into the ground because the ground was still frozen so it ran into the rivers. The water being up to the top of the flood banks, on Sunday night the Cottenham Town Crier walked the High Street calling for volunteers to walk the flood banks looking for breaches.
