“Cottenham welcomed me with open arms this past Christmas. My partner Michelle and I took our dog Bobby for a walk and heard a mellifluous hubbub at the All Saints Church, we were asked in, dog and all, and fell witness to an amazing choir and a really rather beautiful Christmas Service.

It was Christmas Eve, around 7.30pm, 2022. As good a welcome as any to a new village/town.

We had just moved into a lovely 18th century cottage in Cottenham in mid-December, that we now call home.

I have lived in Cambridge for a large part of my life and London for a decade, while I trained and began working as an actor, which I’ve done o and on for nearly thirty years.

As a teacher I have taught at many schools in Cambridge and Cambridgeshire; including Cottenham Village College. I teach Drama, Theatre Studies and English. Cottenham is a really friendly place. The main strip of the High Street is full of cheery faces, even on the bleakest of days and coming here in the winter means that they’re only going to get cheerier, which is a comforting thought.

The dog has led me around pretty much every corner and crevice of Cottenham and he has been a great excuse or ‘prop’ whilst snooping about. Beautiful fields and patches of woodland can be traversed from muddy tracks and friendly neighbours seem to be understanding about dogs, which is great to see and not always the order of things in the City of Cambridge.

I like a walk with the dog as a way to unwind, but really more as a way of familiarising myself with my new home. And it does feel like home.

If you will allow it, I’d like to give my personal view of the Cottenham around us in each coming issue and highlight the areas I see as worthy of mention along my new path as Editor of this Newsletter.

Please email me your feedback on my reflections and by all means introduce yourself. I’d like to shine a light on anything that is deserving of more attention on top of what it’s already had or hasn’t had. There are already some areas and individuals that I would like to put in the spotlight and if you will indulge me, I will do just that.

If you have any views to share, by all means let me know. Consider me a mouth piece for your thoughts, moving forward. I look forward to a long stay here and to making your acquaintance. Cottenham is a singularly interesting place and I’m sure I don’t know the half of it!

A personal Thank You

“Myself, my aunt and my uncle have had the wonderful pleasure of serving the great community of Cottenham for the last 33 years. Time has really flown by, we have seen parents bring their young children in and now that very child is coming in with a child of their own. We will honestly miss being here and seeing all the friendly faces and many dogwalkers!! We would like to send our sincerest thanks and appreciation for all the years of support that you have provided for us as it has helped build the foundations for the future generations, and for this we are humbled. Everything must come to an end but there’s a lot to look forward to too. I personally wish everyone a happy and healthy future, a million thanks to all.”

Cottenham Fish Shop Cashes Its Chips In

Sayonara Salt and Pepper Squid! Farewell Fried Rice! Adios Ann Lee! But ‘Zaijian’ is how you say goodbye in Chinese and it’s the least we can do.

Zaijan to Ann Lee, Ngay Chang (her husband) and Sinh Le (her nephew)!

Ann and Ngay have been serving us the finest in Chinese food and Fish and Chips since 1989! To give you some perspective, that’s the year that Tim Burton’s Batman came out, The Little Mermaid and When Harry Met Sally

Sinh Le joined later, after he finished school at Parkside Community College, Cambridge.

Why stop now?

The owner of the building is selling up and moving on. Which means our family-run takeaway must ‘up sticks’ and walk away.

The futures of these amazing family-run businesses are always precarious at best in today’s financial climate, but when it’s a matter of a well-loved thriving business being forced to quit, due to circumstances outside of their control, it’s just plain heart-breaking.

I met up with the family to see if I could shed some light on the situation and get some clarity, particularly because my partner and I have been avid customers, since moving here and I wanted to know why they were moving on. To find out it’s not their choice is just too hard to take.

Ann, Ngay and Sinh Le will all be looking for new jobs from Monday 27th March.

Sinh Le’s dad is the Head Chef of Charlie Chan’s in Cambridge, a place I have eaten at many times, as I grew up in

Cambridge. I’m particularly fond of the Won Ton Soup.

Sinh Le himself is a personable chap and incidentally, he was the last baby to be born at Mill Road Maternity Hospital, before it moved to Addenbrookes and became The Rosie Maternity Hospital.

He has a genuine a ection for his local customers here in Cottenham and he shows very visible disappointment that it all ends this week.

I asked him what the most popular item on the menu is and he replied, “by far the Chinese Curry Sauce, people have it poured on their dishes often, even if they’ve got a di erent sauce already in the dish! One customer called Ray has it poured on his Beef Chow Mein”. He goes on, “The recipe for that Sauce is over 33 years old, since we opened and invented it. It hasn’t changed since!”

Nice to hear. I love it and it goes all over my chips, marrying two cultures together. A fusion of the best of two great nation’s contribution to world cuisine - China: Chinese Curry Sauce and UK: the Chip. Most popular dishes along with the Curry Sauce are Lemon Chicken, Shredded Duck and Crispy Chilli Beef.

Ciao Chicken! Bon Voyage Beef! Don’t be a stranger Duck!

But food puns aside, it’s sad to say goodbye to this friendly family of talented cooks. To hear that they are all three now joining the job-hunting throng, when there is still such a hungry demand for their food, leaves me very dis-Satay-fied!

What are your thoughts on this? Any ideas or o ers of a solution? Email me at: cottenhamnewsletter@gmail.com

“...and Action!”

Not a cry usually associated with Cottenham’s High Street, but if you were passing by ROOMS 101 LTD Studios during March you might have heard just that, followed by a similar cry of ”CUT!”

You’d be forgiven for thinking that Hollywood had come to Cottenham, and you wouldn’t be far o , because an independent boxing drama has been shooting in the studios which are located next to Denton’s Carpets.

The film follows the life of a disgraced stockbroker, attempting to rebuild his life after a spell in prison for insider trading.

The director, Mark Hampton, plays the struggling Boxer, Danny, as he begins a new life after serving a three-year stint in prison, ably aided and abetted by his best friend, Jon, a restaurateur and boxing coach played by Mark Tunstall.

Jon then trains the city boy for an unlicensed boxing match with a £10,000 prize. The film is set in Cambridge (that well-known den of underground boxing and vice!) and Cottenham, bringing the lovely, leafy village in Cambridgeshire to the heart of the film. The sets in Cottenham (both on the High Street) utilise existing buildings for the apartment home of Danny and the cottage house of his ex-wife Chloe, played by actress Sarah Diamond.

The film will play at all major film festivals in Europe and beyond including the US. A general cinema release will follow.

The film wraps in May and begins the edit. It looks to be making itself known around the end of 2023. More on this and its general release next issue.

The working title of this gritty, yet uplifting drama is ‘Unlicensed’, which alludes to the seedy boxing underbelly of illegal, unlicensed fights for cash and the fact that Danny has lost his licence for financial trading in the City of London, due to a fraud scam that he perpetrated. This has resulted in a prison term and his need to reach out to his old buddy, Jon, for help to build a new life.

The film promotes the local boxing scene of Cambridge as an outlet for teen angst, community support and the o er of a sport and exercise that facilitates a city’s need for acceptance, camaraderie, physical and mental health and general well-being.

The film promises knockout boxing matches, with richly choreographed fight scenes, lost, late, lamented love and the importance of friends and the family we choose, whilst traversing the road to a new life. A buddy movie, with a heart of gold. Words and picture – Mark Tunstall

Cottenham Community Allotment

Welcome to the Spring edition of the Cottenham Newsletter from your local W.I. Following on from interesting speakers including successful talks on Ely Cathedral, the environment, flower arranging, jewellery, plus musical entertainment at Christmas; we are now looking forward to lighter nights with again a varied programme over the next three months.

See dates below:

A reminder that ALL of OUR MEETINGS are held at The Village Hall, Lambs Lane, Cottenham on the second Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm-9.30pm

The last few months have been busy for the Community Allotment volunteers as we have acquired a polytunnel which we will use for delicate plants. A lot of work has gone into making it usable for this season. We have also built new raised beds in the Family Allotment area and filled them with compost ready for growing. In addition to this we have composted the main allotment beds which we hope will bring greater productivity for this year. Thank you to the many volunteers who have helped to make this happen

over the last couple of months. We continue to meet every first Sunday (1.30-4pm) and third Saturday of the month (10-12.30pm). If you would like to find out more about the allotment please join us at one of these sessions, email us on: cottenham.allotment@gmail.com, or ‘like’ us on Facebook to get updates on what is happening. We are also looking for new families to use the raised beds on the family allotment this season. If you would like to have a go at planting and growing your own produce, please get in touch to find out more. Thank you!

Cottenham & Rampton Lunch & Social Club

APRIL 12th:

To start part of the yearly programme we are having an “in house” socialising evening which includes games and quizzes among other activities. A great fun evening is planned by the Committee. Come and join us for a drink and nibbles!!

MAY 10th :

The speaker for this month is Ian Cumming, runner up in the Great British Bake O in 2015 when he was pipped to the title by Nadia Hussain. We know some of our members are already looking forward to Ian’s visit!

Contact us at: Cottenham WI Facebook and email us at: Cottenhamwi@outlook.com

(Formally Cottenham Day Centre)

The Cottenham and Rampton Lunch and Social Club continues to thrive. We meet every Tuesday at the Community Room in Coolidge Gardens for co ee, bingo or a talk and a freshly cooked two-course lunch. Our members are all of pensionable age, some who have been in the village for years, some who have newly moved to the area and everyone is warmly welcomed. This year we are planning more excursions in addition to our regular Tuesday, such as an afternoon tea at one of the local garden centres or a boat trip on the river - our members are busy thinking of other places they would like to go. We are lucky that we have our own minibus, with accessible access,

so our members can be picked up and dropped o .

We have a fantastic group of volunteers but would certainly welcome a few more, so if you have a bit of time on a Tuesday and would like to get involved do get in touch. We are particularly looking for people who might be keen to help with some of the administration - Treasurer, Secretary, Social Media - but equally if you would prefer to help out in the kitchen that would be great too.

Please contact Pauline Brown on 07708425720 or email chaircottenhamdaycentre.co.uk if you would like to know more.

Gardener’s Club

As I write it is still February, but spring is in the air and our AGM is approaching, with the prospect of a whole new series of garden-related talks.

The surge in popularity of house plants is reflected in our talk on April 28th: House Plants and their Care, by Geo Hodge, Gardening Writer and Broadcaster.

On May 26th Tim Scott, a local farmer for Countryside Restoration Trust, will talk about Nature Friendly Farming.

Twinning

The Fen Edge Twinning Association has been invited to send a group of members to visit Avrille (France) this Spring and we have accepted! After a long period of COVID-enforced inactivity, things are starting to happen again.

For many years, the Annual Twinning Visit has been the highlight of our year. We stay in the homes of our French hosts and experience life as the French live it. We gain an appreciation of how it feels to be French and an understanding of their “strange” ways. Many a “weekend staying with foreign strangers” has resulted in a real and lasting friendship. Of course, we don’t spend all our time in the homes of our hosts. The French committee always organises a range of fun social activities

Meetings are held at Franklin Gardens Community Room, usually on the last Friday of the month. Refreshments are served from 7.30 pm, with the talk starting at 7.45. The evening closes with a ra e, with prizes kindly donated by members and committee.

Annual membership, running from February, costs £20, covering 7 speaker meetings, 3 parties and a garden visit. Visitors are welcome to try a single meeting for £3, or £6 for one of the parties. For further information please contact Sarah Dumont Tel: 01954 260482

and at least one visit to a local attraction. This year’s visit will run from Friday 26 till Monday 29 May. Next year it is hoped the French will visit us at about the same time of year.

The host country provides board, lodgings, entertainment and transport free of charge to its guests. The French government helps out its “twinners” but we rely on grants (FECA has been very good) and fundraising events to help with our entertainment costs, so please look out for our promotional materials!

We are always delighted to accept new members without exception, but younger people would be particularly welcome. If you feel that you might like to join us (as a host, a visitor, a fundraiser or just an observer) please contact fenedgetwinning@gmail.com

No Mow May

What is No Mow May? Put quite simply, plants need pollinators and pollinators need plants. However, we know that both are in sharp decline. Throughout May to support this campaign several grassed areas in the village won’t be cut. These include the Moat on the Tenison Manor estate (walkways will still be cut), a small area outside of the Moat o Bullfinch Way, the grassed area by The Dunnocks and WARG Field o Histon Road (walkways will be cut).

The Connections Youth Bus is a free facility for everyone from school year 7 to age 18. O ering games, quizzes and advice, the Bus can be found at the Recreation Ground o Lambs Lane every Thursday from 7-9pm (term time only).

Safer Crossings on Rampton Road

At the time of writing, a working group has been set up, made of councillors, our county councillor Neil Gough, and interested residents, to look at safer crossing points for pedestrians on Rampton Road. This is a joint project with the County Council,

mainly funded by S106 developer funds from Northstowe to mitigate the impact on nearby communities. More information on this project will be shared on our website and Facebook page.

Climate and Ecological Emergency

At our January Full Council meeting we declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency. A working group has been set up to advise the Parish Council on actions it can take in terms of:

• how its own activities could be adapted to reduce its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and

biodiversity reduction

• how it can help Cottenham residents prepare and withstand threats associated with climate change (e.g. flooding, extreme temperatures and biodiversity loss) If you are interested in finding out more, please contact Cllr Chris Ward on cllr.ward@cottenhampc.org.uk

Village Hall Solar Panels

In February the installation of a further 72 solar panels was completed at the Village Hall. Battery storage was also installed and we will be exporting to the grid, with revenue generated helping to o -set running costs for the building. This was a project originally instigated by the late Cllr Dr

Road Closure

We have been informed by County Highways that an application has been submitted to close Histon Road from Dunstal Field. Access will be maintained for residents. The dates of the closure are 31st May to 2nd June, during half term week. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for any changes.

We encourage residents to report any highways-related issues they see (e.g. potholes) directly to the County Council, via their reporting site highwaysreporting. cambridgeshire.gov.uk

We are grateful to the SCDC Zero Carbon Communities fund and Amey for grants towards this project.

For faults which pose an immediate risk of danger to the public (including debris on the road) please call Cambridgeshire Highways on 0345 045 5212 during o ce hours - 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays or for out-ofhours emergencies use the Police 101 service.

£400k *PWLB loan

At our March meeting we agreed to pay a £400k Public Works loan o early (the loan was towards the build of the Village Hall and Nursery). We have been able to pay the loan o from S106 monies received from developers. The early repayment will result in a

saving of approximately £20k this financial year. Whilst we can’t adjust our 2023/24 budget we will be able to review our parish precept (which forms part of the council tax) for the following financial year.

Since the new Village Hall opened in 2021, the bars* have been run by a small team of enthusiastic volunteers. Thanks to their e orts the money generated has been put to good use:

• It has enabled the Parish Council to hold the hall hire rates at 2022/23 levels for Cottenham residents and community groups, despite pressure from higher running costs.

• It has allowed the Parish Council to o er three opportunities to local charities to use the ground floor hall free of charge for fundraising events in 2023/24.

BUT the bars can’t continue to generate these benefits without volunteers and we need more help to spread the load. Unless we can expand the bar team, we will have to consider reducing the bar sessions and hence the money and benefits generated for residents.

Can you spare a bit of time to help out at the bars and support the community at the same time?

• It’s a fun way of doing something for the community.

• It’s a chance to meet new people – or volunteer with friends.

• You’ll get on-the-job training and learn new skills.

• There’s no regular commitment –sign up to help when you’re available.

• Sessions are usually about two-three hours in length.

For more information on helping on the bar as well as the free hire opportunities for charities, get in touch with Christine Ward on 01954 251813 or cllr.ward@cottenhampc.org.uk

The use of the Village Hall is also very encouraging. There are regular daytime and evening bookings along with weddings and private parties at weekends. We hope to use the income generated from these along with the bars and financial contributions from the housing developers to pay back some of the building loan early – a saving for all Cottenham residents in due course.

*There are two bars in the new Village Hall – a large bar in the first floor function room (Balcony Room) and one on the ground floor which is accessible from the recreation ground.

Cottenham United Colts Tournament

Sunday 28th May 2023

Come and support our local teams. For more information please email:

CottenhamColts@virginmedia.com

A quick update: We are back training on the 3G Floodlight Pitch, although it really does need upgrading soon!

All teams are back playing and the weather hasn’t had too much of an impact yet.

We are also preparing for our annual tournament for the late May Bank Holiday. If you can help in any way, sponsor, supply equipment / food & drinks, the list is endless, please contact the club and we can pass your details on to the tournament committee

We are always looking for volunteers and seeking someone to become club secretary (or secretaries), or as I see it, the person who actually does run the club. Obviously, this is a volunteer role, but please get in touch if you can help,

ideally I like to split the tasks between a few people

Our U12s won their split season league and have now moved up a division for the next half of the season, before they enter the realms of 11v11.

Our U14 boys had managed to secure sponsorship for new kit for this season. A slight change in design from previous years. The home kit is proudly sponsored by Les Ward.

The new sky-blue away shirts, previously orange, as well as the girls training tops, were provided by Tilia Homes.

The U15 girls also received some funding from Tilia, which went towards training tops.

Cottenham United F.C.

The club currently has one team playing in the Cambs FA Saturday Seniors League 1a with our home games played at Cottenham Recreation Ground.

The manager is Harry West with assistant manager Jamie Bladen. Training takes place at Cottenham Village College Sports Centre on their floodlight 3G pitch every Wednesday evening, 8pm till 9pm.

At the time of writing, the club are currently second in the Cambs League 1a, with great hopes in pushing on for promotion to the Cambs Senior B league this season, 23/24.

We are also looking to re-establish a

reserve team and are on the look out for a manager and su cient players to support a 2nd team.

If you are interested in playing or managing at senior football level, then please get in contact with us via our email: cottenhamunitedfc@hotmail.com or for further information about the club you can check out our website: www.cottenhamunitedfc.co.uk or our Twitter, Instagram or Facebook links.

The club has great ambitions going forward, so this would be a good time to come along and join us on our journey.

All Stars and Dynamos

We will be running an ECB All Stars programme for 5 - 8-year-old boys and girls. This will be on Sunday mornings, 9.30-10.30am on the recreation ground starting on May 14th and continuing for eight weeks until July 2nd. For older children (8-11 years, boys and girls), there is an ECB Dynamos programme which we’ll be running also on Sunday mornings, 10.30-11.30am, again on the rec. and also running from May 14th until July 2nd.

The All Stars coaching provides a really fun introduction to cricket to get our youngsters enthused about the game and develop some basic skills whilst Dynamos takes this a step further, participants developing new cricketing skills including batting, bowling and fielding and having the chance to play a fast-paced and exciting game of countdown cricket – a new format that mirrors The Hundred. It’s designed for children graduating from the All Stars Cricket programme but is also perfect for those who are new to the game. To find out more about either of these programmes, simply go to either ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars or ecb.co.uk/ play/dynamoscricket and you can sign youngsters up for our courses at COTTENHAM CC at ecb.clubspark.uk

Under-12s Team

We are planning to run an under-12s side this summer for which both boys and girls can play. This team will build on the progress made by our u-11s side last year and will play some competitive games after school in the summer term. We are looking for a few more to join this group, specifically youngsters in years 6 and 7

who enjoy cricket and would perhaps like to have a go at a sport for which they may have a bit of aptitude but just don’t get much chance to play.

We will be running some professional coaching sessions for this group in the Village College Sports Hall after school on Wednesdays, 4.30-6.00pm starting in March and running through to April 26th with a two-week break for the Easter holidays, so there’ll still be a couple of sessions left by the time you read this. If you’ve missed a few sessions, don’t worry at all, just come along and join in. Our coach is great with the youngsters and they’ll have a brilliant time. The matches themselves will start in May.

Senior Cricket

We’ll be running our usual two adult teams this summer, a 1st and 2nd XI. We have some pre-season net sessions booked at Fenners Indoor School in Cambridge in starting on Sunday March 27th and running through April - please go to the News section of our website (below) to find out all the details.

Our League matches start on May 13th (1st XI) and May 6th (2nd XI). During the season we’ll be practising either at the outdoor nets at the Village College or using the batting cage at the rec.

Don’t worry if you’ve not played with us before, you’ll get a really warm welcome. Indeed, we are always really keen to reach out to all local cricketers not currently playing for Cottenham to join us in keeping our Club both moving forward and providing the opportunity for all ages in the village and nearby area to take part in this wonderful game. Please don’t hesitate - just get in touch.

Renegades Rugby

As this article is being written, Renegades have only two games left in the season. The new league to which they were promoted has been challenging, no game more so than our first visit to Wisbech on Feb 25. The home team managed to win by 95-7. It was a long afternoon.

The good news is that Renegades have managed to scrape enough points together to stay in this league for another season. Until a couple of games ago, this was by no means certain. This desire to stay up does not reflect any masochistic tendencies – being regularly thrashed is not great fun. However, the league below is beset by cancelled games because teams are struggling to get numbers out on game day. Playing rugby and losing, is a lot more fun than not playing rugby.

The two remaining games in the season

are Norwich Union in Cottenham and Sudbury in Sudbury. These are games that are contestable by Renegades and so they aspire to improve their position in the League.

If you fancy trying your hand at rugby, Renegades are always on the lookout for new players. You may have played at school or with a club a while back and would like to get back into it. Or maybe you have never played but think you might like to try it out. Either way, you will get a great welcome if you come along to try out Renegades. Renegades take the game seriously but having fun is what the club is really about. If you are interested have a look at the Renegades website renegadesrugby.net and come along to one of our touch rugby sessions over the summer and meet the players and have some fun!

Cottenham Annual Parish Meeting

Messy Church

I visited All Saints Church on Saturday 18th March 2023. I noticed the banner on the church gate, whilst walking Bobby.

The Cottenham APM will be held on Monday 15th May. Come along at 7pm for refreshments and a chance to meet residents and representatives from village groups and clubs. The main meeting will commence at 7.30pm.

If your group or club would like to have an exhibition and/or have representatives provide a report about the work they do and what clerk@cottenhampc.org.uk; the deadline

Messy Church is a craft day organised by the Revd. Lynda Davies and a very committed team of volunteers.

According to Revd. Davies, “It’s a form of Church for Children and adults that involves creativity, celebration and hospitality.

All Saints is a church for people at all stages of their faith journey and of any age, though it’s particularly great for young families.

In Cottenham Messy Church typically meets at times of celebration and festivals, such as Christmas, Easter and Harvest. Look out for Messy Church banners on the Village Green or at the church for the next session. Messy Church is also advertised on Facebook and the church website. All are welcome!”

Open 7 Days a week

It’s primarily for people who don’t yet belong to another form of church. It meets at a time that suits people who don’t already belong to a church. The first Messy Church began in 2004, with a group in a church in Portsmouth. They were frustrated, because as a church, they were hardly reaching any children. They decided to do something for all ages and Messy Church was born!

I took a few photos, ate some cake and drank some tea. What hit me was how at home I felt. Everyone was so friendly and ran around fetching me food and drink. I looked at the craft that had been produced and really enjoyed the story told of ‘Samuel in the Temple’. This inspired the various craft pieces made by the children and a tunnel to be built to represent the ‘darkness and into the light’.

Latin American Dancer

Avatar Shift

Acerbic wit, disparaging mind, Digital presence, negatively terse. Instant reactions lacking in empathy, Thoughtless statements, intended to hurt.

Cottenham Library

Opening times:

Hello. My name is Olexander Kutniakov and I am a pre-associate level Latin American dancer. I am 17 years old, and have been living in Cottenham with my mother and younger brother since the war started in Ukraine.

Faceless not nameless, both distant and close, Not really anonymous, avoid harmful prose. Be positive, constructive, considerate and kind, A power for good, that challenging mind.

Tuesday 10am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm

Wednesday 10am to 1pm

Thursday 10am to 1pm, 2pm to 5pm

Saturday 10am to 1pm

Pop along to browse our books, use our IT facilities, renew your bus pass, or just sit in a nice quiet, warm, friendly place.

In the last year I have danced in some really big competitions like the International Championship in London. I also took some first places in Manchester and I made it to the second round at the UK Open. After I left Ukraine, I danced in Poland and took two second places.

The sun rises on all living things. The rocks with warmth have been touched. The golden rays glow excitement, a day renewed by heaven’s breath. Light lifts the shadows, all can be seen. A waking dream.

I have solid experience in teaching, I trained children and their parents in Ukraine. A few months ago I also gained a diploma from the IDTA (International Dance Teachers Association) in London. I have been trained in England with really great dancers.

Readers are invited to send in either original poetry or short stories for inclusion in the Cottenham Newsletter. Short stories should be no longer than 600 words. The objective should be to entertain the general readership – go on, have a go!

Dancing is amazing and I want to give this energy and atmosphere to everyone. Recently I started Ballroom and Latin dance classes in Cottenham for families, who would like to come along and have some fun. The classes are suitable for complete beginners and those with some

dance experience, and I teach all ages. You don’t need a partner or any special shoes to share in this very enjoyable family experience for children and their parents.

I want to share the love of dance with our local community, so why not come and try for yourself!

Classes are held at the Village Hall on Sundays, 5.15 to 7pm

Young people of the village we’d love to hear from you. Are you in a band? Have you achieved something to be proud of? Raised money for charity?

Recently I met with Bea Brook on the set of the new boxing drama by Mark Hampton ‘Unlicensed’, which will be cinemas next year! Bea has a cameo in the film as a newbie Boxer- Inspiring more teenagers to take up the sport, which is one of the aims of the film, as well as providing some great entertainment. Bea is also enrolled in the drama school led by Emil Dale, open to children across the country. I asked the 16-year-old some questions and her advice for other likeminded teens. Read the full interview at www.cottenham.org

Mark: Bea, you are a fledgling actor finding your feet and style as a performer. You’ve made an early decision to follow acting as a possible profession. Why is that?

Bea: Acting is a way of expressing yourself in many ways and being able to embody and emotionally connect with a character is something that I find interesting. I have been singing, acting and dancing for as long as I can remember, and I find it really enjoyable.

Mark: What element of drama and acting do you particularly enjoy and why? Serious drama, musical, comedy...etc?

Bea: Since the age of 3, I would repeatedly watch musical films such as Calamity Jane and The Wizard of Oz and this has stuck with me ever since. I have trained in musical theatre for 12 years and have loved every second. As I have grown older, I have found comedy to be very entertaining and enjoyable to perform.

Mark: What’s the best work you’ve done so far? Have you been on TV? Tells us

about it.

Bea: I was in a Tesco Food Love Stories TV advert, and it was the best experience ever! Filming it and getting to see all of the behind the scenes of the film and TV industry. Meeting loads of new people and putting myself out there has definitely led to greater opportunities and improved my confidence as a young actor and performer. I’ve also performed at the O2 Arena, O2 Theatre and the Gordon Craig Theatre. All major learning curves for me.

Mark: You feature in the new film being filmed in Cambridgeshire called ‘Unlicenced’, about the underground boxing world. Has boxing ever interested you? What sports do interest you? What other interests do you have?

Bea: Boxing has never overly interested me, but I do find that Nicola Adams is a very strong, inspiring and positive woman. I do have lots of interest in sports, such as football, formula 1 and dance. I have been brought up to watch the Formula 1 races no matter where I am or what I am doing!

Mark: Where do you study drama?

Bea: I study drama at Emil Dale Academy in Hitchin.

Mark: How was the filming process in ‘Unlicensed’ today?

Bea: The filming process of ‘Unlicensed’ was so much fun and very interesting, everyone on set was very friendly and welcoming and I had a great time learning some new boxing skills and combinations. I felt really at ease with Mark Hampton’s directing, and he made everything very clear. Thank you to everyone involved in the filming! (Interview by Mark Tunstall)

Cottenham CARECAR needs more drivers

Volunteer drivers have all expenses paid in accordance with HMCR rules. They do not have to be available at specific times: each week they are o ered jobs from which they can pick and choose the ones they can do. Even if a driver only manages one

ENERGY

Home improvements for warmer homes

Wendy Dear attended our home energy event in November and sent us this useful update on what happened next:

Sustainable Cottenham and Cottenham Community Centre’s Home Energy drop-in event o ered a range of ideas to cut energy costs. In our case we already have solar panels but our late Victorian semi-detached could not take advantage of air source heat pumps (house not suitable for its installation, and nor could we have underfloor heating). So that’s what we’ve decided to do. We’ve found someone to do the work, and as there’ll be some disruption while it is being hung, we await warmer weather. By next winter the house should be very cosy indeed! So thanks Sustainable Cottenham.

job per week, they are useful. All you need is a fully insured car (preferably 4 door but not essential) and be DBS cleared, which is free. Please, if you live in Cottenham, Westwick or Overton, consider carefully whether you can spare an hour or two, and contact me as below:

Insulation is the big problem most of us face and only after we’d had a thermal camera analysis (carried out by Sustainable Cottenham volunteer Rob Moorcroft) did we begin to understand where the ‘cold spots’ were, and think what we could do about them. We got quotes for adding secondary double glazing (too expensive) then moved on to how to upgrade the very old windows.

This quote was acceptable and work will be done when the weather improves.

2nd Cottenham Cubs received a visit from Sustainable Cottenham in early March. They took part in a litter-pick race in preparation for attending the village litter-pick in April, learnt about recycling and nature conservation, and made bird feeders from plastic bottles. The cubs were very switched on to environmental issues and were keen to ask lots of questions, from whether it’s always bad to cut down trees to how good Elon Musk is for the planet!

Next village litter pick

We also need someone to take over the Coordinator’s job from me when I have to give it up. I am sure there arelots of people that could do this job from home for a few hours per week.

Our second big change to the house is putting up thermal wallpaper in the hallway and two north-facing rooms. It is a new discovery for us and is a boon because insulating the outside of the house is beyond our means.

We found a website which has clear information and videos explaining what is involved (GoWallpaper.com) and sent for samples of the two thicknesses. The 4mm is thicker than paper I’ve used in previous houses, comes in much bigger rolls and uses adhesive that is pasted

Our next litter pick will be on Saturday 29th April. Meet at the Village Hall, Lambs Lane Recreation Ground at 2pm where equipment and routes will be provided. Refreshments for volunteers will be served at the Village Hall from 4pm. Children must be supervised by a responsible adult. Equipment will be provided but wear suitable clothing for the weather – we will still go ahead even if it rains. It helps to know in advance how many people might be taking part, so if you would like to join us please email Peter Pilbeam on pgp1@cam.ac.uk or call 01954 251544
