New Co ee Shop Remembrance

Baked opened its doors on 9/1/23 and we look forward to serving the village some Italian co ee, cakes baked by Sheri, our local cake legend (cakes & bakes by sheri), some delights from local Pastim Bakery and not forgetting the original Barkers bakery. Don’t worry, we will still be serving bacon rolls and all-day breakfast, along with some homemade soups, amazing toasties and much more. We hope you will find something to your liking but if not please let us know! This is a work in progress so watch out for the changing menu. There will be more seating for those wanting to escape momentarily from

working at home and you will find a warm welcoming environment. More seating to dine in and plenty of space for those wanting to fly in and out!

We look forward to seeing some old and new faces.

The Remembrance Sunday parade and service returned to its normal format this year, after two years’ disruption. It was wonderful to see so many people attending the service, joining together to commemorate those who gave their lives for our freedom.

Thanks go to Cottenham Parish Council who managed the organisation of the event, with the support of the British Legion and a number of other village groups.

The Caledonian Pipe Band led us to the War Memorial and our resident band, Cottenham Brass, played for the service.

The service was led by the Rev. Lynda Davies, Vicar of All Saints’ Church, with contributions from Marie Lucchetta Redmond, also of All Saints’, Kate Lees, Minister at the Baptist Church and Major Paul Cooper of the Salvation Army. And this year, part of the service was delivered in French and English in recognition

of the French exchange visitors who were also attending the service.

Colin Summerfield and his team again provided the excellent PA system and the Chequers generously allowed us to use their electricity supply.

It is always a pleasure to see so many young people at the service including all the Scout and Guide groups and Cottenham Colts who joined us again to lay wreaths and carry standards.

Thanks go to all those groups mentioned above.

And thanks go to many other individuals, including the marshalls, those who gave out orders of service, or stood with Poppy boxes and collecting tins, and of course the Cottenham and Rampton residents who made up the congregation.

20mph speed limits are becoming more prevalent in built-up areas and increasingly in the Cambridgeshire villages. Girton High Street has been 20mph for some time, and a new 20mph zone has recently been implemented in Oakington.

Bin collections

The Parish Council has been considering for some time whether to implement a 20mph zone in Cottenham, and if so where it should cover. It is listed as one of the things that we would like to have in the Neighbourhood Plan.

There are questions around 20mph limits such as how will it be enforced, will anyone follow it, the cost of signage, etc. At the same time accidents involving pedestrians at 20mph cause much less injury than at 30mph, and slower tra c in the village will be safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Cambridgeshire County Council is about to announce a programme where villages can bid for funding to implement 20mph schemes and the Parish Council would like to understand what the village thinks. The Parish Council does not have

a preferred option and it needs your help to decide the best solution for Cottenham.

Three possible alternative approaches have been developed to start the conversation and to gather your views. The options and a feedback form are available on the website www.cottenhampc.org. uk/20mph-zones/. They can also be viewed by visiting the Parish O ce during opening hours, and paper copies of the survey are available.

Please note we will be closing entries for the online feedback form shortly after the publication of this newsletter, so please do respond as soon as possible.

If you want to know more or have any other questions or comments, please contact Beth, the Assistant Clerk (email asstclerk@cottenhampc. org.uk, phone 07490 459130) or drop in to the Village Hall during o ce hours (Mon & Thu 9.30 -13.00).

The subject in November was a little di erent: Dick Newell from Landbeach gave a heartfelt talk entitled Action for Swifts, encouraging us all to put up boxes or install S bricks to provide nesting places. I was particularly interested, because swifts adopted one of our boxes this summer and I had plenty of questions!

February 24th is the AGM, when the programme for 2023/2024 is unveiled. After the formal business, there is usually a short talk or entertainment. Annual subscription, which should remain at £15, will be due. cont below

Royal British Legion - Poppy Appeal

The Royal British Legion Cottenham and Rampton Branch would like to thank all who contributed to the Poppy Appeal last November.

We would like to thank all those businesses and organisations who displayed Poppy tins and boxes, those who collected outside the Co-op and Post O ce and helped to collect Poppy tins from businesses, and of course, everyone in both villages who gave so generously.

So far, we have raised £2,617.50 - a great achievement. Thank you everyone. This total does not include any donations or payments made

online. We will be told the full amount later in the year when HQ have processed everything.

If you or your business/organisation would like to lay a wreath in November, please let me know. We place our order in July, but we always make sure that we have a few spares. We will automatically order a wreath for you this coming year if you required one last year.

We welcome o ers of help for the Poppy Appeal. If you feel you could give an hour of your time for the next Appeal, please contact Ann Scott tel: 01954 251468 email: ann.scott23@ntlworld.com

The first topic for the new season, on March 31st, is The People, Places and Plants of Paradise; Neil Callan will be talking about Antigua.

The club meets at Franklin Gardens Community Room, usually on the last Friday of the month. Refreshments are served from 7.30 pm, followed by a talk at 7.45. Prizes for the ra e are kindly donated by members and committee.

Precept 2023/24

The precept is a tax, included within the local Council Tax, which enables the Parish Council to perform its functions. Parish Councils can apply for other funding such as grants and funding awards, generally for specific projects, but they do not receive funds directly from central Government.

We are required to agree a budget before we can set the precept and request funding from South Cambridgeshire District Council.

SCDC then converts the precept into an amount per Council Tax payer that is added to the Council Tax bill for all properties within the parish area.

The parish precept for 2023/34 has been set at £335,541, an increase of 2.79% on last year which equates to £3.55 per year on a Band D property. Full details are available on our website/Facebook. For a hard copy of the budget please contact Debbie – rfo@cottenhampc.org.uk

Toddler playground

We are delighted that our toddler playground opened at the start of January. The equipment selected was based on feedback from parents and users and particular thought was

given to making the playground accessible for all. We will shortly be installing fencing around the site and, when the weather permits, complete landscaping works.

LCAS Award

In December we were delighted to hear we had received a prestigious award as part of the Local Council Award Scheme. This achievement recognises that the council achieves good practice in governance, community engagement and council improvement. Moreover, we go above and beyond our legal obligations, leading our community and continuously seeking opportunities to improve and develop even further. The Award Scheme report highlighted the council’s particular areas of strength, including its documentation and consultations - especially on the toddler playgroundand they felt that the next level (Quality award) could be easily achieved. We’d like to thank our team for their e orts in helping us achieve this award.

Main playground

Following the consultation with users of the playground, the Playground Working Party brought together the comments to reflect their preferences in the specification for the project; this was presented to the Council in January. This report has been worked up by our consultant and gone out to tender. We envisage works starting in the early autumn and the project will be funded by S106 monies and hopefully some grants.

Skatepark

We are aiming to expand the skatepark later this year to make it more exciting and attractive to a wider range of users. The skatepark is limited in the extent of surface we can provide due to an underground electricity cable which goes around the existing site. We aim to build extensions within the existing banks

We hope you’ll support us in 2022. Here are five ways:

We have deliberately taken it slowly since opening as we shake o the retirement dust and start to rebuild a team, however as from the beginning of February we will be re-starting our food service.

1. Join: it’s simple and free! Everyone can be a member of the library – even babies.

Come and support your local orchestra! Saturday 25th Feb 7.30 pm at Histon Baptist Church. Enjoy a varied programme of musical winter warmers. Free entry, but there will be a retiring collection for charity.

2. Use: make use of your library. Borrow books (in person, or download to a device), use a computer, attend events and activities, access online tools to help with work or research.

3. Volunteer: we can offer even more programmes with help from volunteers. Could you be our next Storytime

4. Donate: library services are free to use but monetary donations, small or large, help us provide more books and services.

We have a range of lagers, both on draught and bottled, and a soon to be extended wine list from an independent supplier together with a large range of spirits including a selection of gins and single malts.

5. Spread the word: if you love your library, tell your friends and neighbours and encourage them to join! The more members we have, the stronger we are.

These will be advertised locally and on our social media pages.

We look forward to welcoming you in The Chequers soon.

It’s been a disrupted season for our Colts mainly due to freezing weather conditions in December. The bad weather along with the temporary closure of the 3G pitch at CVC has a ected the flow of training for all of our teams.

We are delighted to say that our U12 Black team have won their league (Park) and have been promoted. We’ve seen some brilliant play by the team and they continue to grow to be great ambassadors for the Club.

The Club has continued to invest in equipment and are so pleased with our newly painted container along with its amazing graphics.

Very many thanks to Giuseppe Piran Painters and Decorators and CB Creative for their hard work. In addition to the container we’ve purchased a new gazebbo to help keep our tea and co ee volunteers

cozy in the winter and providing our teams with shade in the summer. We very much look forward to the second half of the season and wish all of our teams the very best of luck.

We are also planning to run an u-12 side in the summer term for which both u-11 and u-12 boys and girls (years 6 and 7) can play. We will be running some pre-season coaching sessions for this with our professional coach in Cottenham Village College Sports Hall on Wednesdays, 4.30-6.00pm, starting on Wednesday 8 March. So if you have a son or daughter you think might be interested, please contact us for more information. Or just turn up on the day – all are very welcome.

Renegades Rugby

As the spring approaches, Cottenham Renegades are three-quarters of the way through their season in a higher league than before which covers the whole of East Anglia. It has been a challenging season without doubt. The standard of rugby is much higher, and the distances travelled are considerably greater than ever before. Opponents stretch from Wisbech, Fakenham and North Walsham all the way to Colchester, Woodbridge and Sudbury with trips to Norwich Union and Ipswich in the mix. Closer to home we play Cambridge 3 and Newmarket.

On the pitch, we have faced very well-disciplined teams, many of whom train with their first teams that play several levels above this league. So, we have had to get used to some pretty severe beatings and

have sustained many injuries which have made it a challenge to field teams on occasion.

Having said that, December started well with a good win against Ipswich at home (61-7). However, the weather intervened and the remaining fixtures for 2022 were postponed. The new year saw us travel to Colchester with 15 players, two of whom had to come o in the first half due to injury. The final score was 74:10 to Colchester, with Renegades scoring the 2nd and last tries. We tried to invoke the last try wins rule, but Colchester were having none of it!

Despite all the challenges, being a Renegade is really good fun. If you want to take up rugby or renew your connection with the game, please visit our Website renegadesrugby.net or call/text 07966 404 813.

March: New 2023/24 season memberships available.

April: Easter holiday camp.

Tennis at CVC

It is not only the astro pitch with issues; the hard courts are also a problem. School children need a safe outdoor play surface, and they are not alone in struggling to play on the slippery, uneven hard courts at CVC. The courts desperately need resurfacing and the floodlights replacing if village tennis and netball clubs are to be able to continue using them.

CVC has the only courts which currently can accommodate a tennis club in Cottenham. If we can’t play at CVC, then Cottenham Tennis Club will have no home. The two grass courts on the rec are great, being open to all for recreational play, but they can only be used in summer and the investment needed to put and maintain them in a condition necessary for club use is not viable. There are no other current alternatives in Cottenham

and future possibilities away from CVC for the four new floodlit hard courts needed to support a club will not come to fruition, if at all, for many years. Therefore, it is vital that if the club is to survive, we urgently need to improve the community facilities at the school.

We and Cottenham Jaguars Netball Club are working with CVC and our governing bodies, to find solutions. We would welcome any support from members of the public, local businesses, CVC students and their families.

The club has many activities planned for 2023. We are dedicated to our local community, schools and members.

These are challenging times, but we intend to continue providing our high-quality coaching programme, social play, matches and more. Please contact our secretary or the CVC principal if you can help in any way.

Les Ward 1939 - 2022

Les was born on the 8th of November 1939 at 3 Twentypence Road to Percy and Harriot Ward, the youngest of 5 with Tom, Doris, Bob and Joy his older siblings. He attended school at Margett Street and then worked on his uncle’s farm as a labourer before working on the roads for Lavender and Bateman.

Acerbic wit, disparaging mind, Digital presence, negatively terse. Instant reactions lacking in empathy, Thoughtless statements, intended to hurt.

He met Norma, the love of his life, in Cottenham and they were married in All Saints Church in 1962. When the children, Sue and Darren, were young the family moved to 125 High Street, Cottenham where Les remained for the rest of his life.

Whilst working for Lavender and Bateman Les started to take a greengrocery van to Eaton Socon. He also had a weekend stall on Biggleswade Market. His first shop opened in Fenstanton and from there, the name Les Ward grew. The remaining two shops in Cottenham and Arbury Court are carried on by his nephew Paul.

Les retired in 2014 at the age of 75 and was heartbroken when Norma passed away six years ago.

Les was someone about whom noone had a bad word to say. He was a well-known, honest gentleman and incredibly polite. He served many customers at his shops over the years, and both sta and customers alike thought the world of him.

The sun rises on all living things. The rocks with warmth have been touched. The golden rays glow excitement, a day renewed by heaven’s breath. Light lifts the shadows, all can be seen. A waking dream.

Born 10th August 1951 to Fred and May. Started life on Little North Fen Farm at the bottom of Rampton hill, the youngest of three children. Trevor and Diane being his older siblings. Inquisitive to say the least but he learnt much from Mum’s talkative budgerigar. Alan was taken by his parents to the Salvation Army in Cambridge where he learnt to play the Trombone. He did his electrical apprenticeship at Morley and Duke in King Street, Cambridge and soon after commenced his own business.

Alan loved his time with the fire brigade and of course having the video shop business he met so many people over the years in Cottenham.

Alan played football and cricket for Cottenham. He enjoyed his snooker, golf, cribbage, and of late, fishing with his son Daniel.

Honest to the core, he always supported the underdog (hence being an Arsenal fan of course). Many friends give testament to his care and his love for the local community. His last two posts on social media: Dear God, I can’t be everywhere, but you are. Please look after my loved ones. Keep them safe from harm. Amen. When death one day comes for me, I shall go with a smile on my face, a hallelujah on my lips with no fear in my heart as my God will be coming for me and where I will be going, No more trouble will I ever see. Amen.

The sun rises on all living things. The rocks with warmth have been touched. The golden rays glow excitement, a day renewed by heaven’s breath. Light lifts the shadows, all can be seen. A waking dream.

John and his wife Deborah moved to Cottenham in 1996 with their two children, Louisa and Tom. He spent his career working as a scientist/ engineer, principally in the design and manufacture of medical devices. Quiet in manner but with wide interests and great ability, John made a significant contribution as a Parish Councillor for Cottenham and was very committed to protecting and enhancing the environment. He was able to indulge his passion for wildlife and conservation of the natural environment and was heavily involved in biodiversity

improvement projects in Cottenham, particularly the New Life on the Old West project, as well as heading up the installation of a further 72 solar panels on the Village Hall (work due to be completed in February).

John retired in 2022 which coincided with his election as a South Cambridgeshire District Councillor for Cottenham and Rampton, a role in which he was doing an excellent job. John was passionate and committed to his community and his loss will be felt very greatly.

Butchers

Hi, we are The Murks and we are here to talk to you about our journey. We are all students at Cottenham Village College and the idea for the band came to us in the depths of a year 8 science lesson in 2022. We haven’t looked back since. Our first proper gig was at the Fen Edge Festival that summer, which was a great start to our gigging journey. It was such an impressive stage, and once we were on there and performing the nerves dissapeared and we didn’t want to come o . After that we were eager for our next gig and we practice regularly after school, writing our own stu too. As a result of our Fen Edge performance we were invited to be a

Since then we have been lucky enough to play at the Portland Arms, which was a big deal for us and amazing. From our beginnings in a science lesson, becoming a band has been great fun and creating and performing with friends and meeting such supportive people and bands along the way has been amazing so far. We can’t wait for what our future has in store. Feel free to follow us on instagram @TheMurksMusic for news of future gigs in 2023.

Annual Parish Meeting 2023

The annual meeting for Cottenham will be held on Monday 15th May from 7pm in the Village Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to give the Parish Council and other local organisations an opportunity to let local residents know what they have been doing over the past year. The meeting is also an opportunity for electors to have a say on anything they consider valuable to the people of the Parish. If your club or group would like to provide an overview of your activities for 2022 please send a report by 14th April to Jo Brookclerk@cottenhampc.org.uk

On the wild side...

What’s the one thing you definitely need to get a decent wildlife photograph? There are myriad answers that come to mind - an expensive camera, a big zoom lens, a portable hide and a camouflage jacket, a fancy tripod and a Bluetooth shutter release app? Those things might help and you could always put them on your next Christmas wishlist, of course. But, probably the most important thing to have is a good supply of patience.

woodland. Such is life that to get those decent wildlife shots you need luck more than patience and to be in the right place, at the right time.

The meeting is an opportunity for local groups, clubs, societies and other voluntary and statutory organisations to provide an exhibition and/or have representatives from the group address those present at the meeting about the work they do and what they are involved in. If you would like to be involved please get in touch.

Now, I am not saying I’ve got plenty of that or even that I take decent wildlife photographs, but certainly you can have the most sophisticated (for which read: expensive) photographic equipment but if you don’t have a little patience, then it’ll be down to pure luck that you get the shot you hoped for, the one that might win prizes or find a place in a charity calendar, for instance. Occasionally, you might stumble across a sight for sore eyes, such as a kingfisher, a little egret, and a great white egret all feeding on the same patch of the Cottenham Lode, or a grey heron gulping down a whole water vole, or an otter grooming itself on the bank of the Great River Ouse or even wandering down the High Street! You might spot a rare bird of prey, such as a Montagu’s Harrier quartering farmland or even stumble across rare hairstreak butterflies in a local

So, this worrying concept of patience ... is there an app for that? Unfortunately not. Aside from the lucky find, if you’re hoping for a decent or even just a half-decent wildlife photograph, you’re going to have to spend more time in the great outdoors. Keeping a keen eye on every tree, every hedgerow, every stream, and always with a weather eye to the sky for the airborne wildlife. Time in the great outdoors is a precious commodity, it can’t be replaced with a virtual reality headset, you simply don’t get the sun on your face, the mud on your boots, nor the wind in your hair. Regardless of what kit you’re carrying, whether high-end smartphone, professional digital SLR with all the trimmings, or a more cheap and cheerful device, take some time, look around, and get a bit snap happy with the wildlife that’s out there.

VILLAGE

HALL UPDATE –GET

Although COVID delayed the full opening of the new village hall, by the end of 2021 it was bustling with community groups, exercise classes, children’s parties and training sessions. This spring it will be hosting its first wedding reception. The community bar opened once or twice a week from September – for visitors to the recreation ground to enjoy a beer on the patio, a gin and tonic with friends or some crisps and a soft drink or coffee with other young families.

The Parish Council is keen to build on this – to open the bar on a regular basis several times a week and run social events such as dances, comedy nights and family discos. The profits from the bar and events will help with the hall running costs and keep hire charges down for Cottenham residents.

To do this we need:

• volunteers to serve in the bar

For more information, email Christine Ward cllr.ward@ cottenhampc.org.uk.

COVID has once again scuppered our plans for events in early 2022 but we are keen to be ready when things re-open, whenever that is.

Cottenham is fortunate to have a variety of community facilities of different sizes, prices and accessibility. The new village hall will help meet the needs of our growing village to ensure there is somewhere to host that community group, exercise class, party, business meeting or wedding reception.

The Parish Council is already working with an enthusiastic team of Cottenham residents but the village hall is for everyone and we would like more people to be part of it. So, please consider either joining the organising committee or helping with a few shifts behind the bar. All volunteer work will be unpaid – but a great way to meet new people and help your community.
