Submissions for the October/ November 2023 edition must be received by noon on 1st September 2023. Please email articles and attached photographs to: cottenhamnewsletter@gmail.com
Gentle Reader, The summer is here and for whatever reason it’s hot or wet or both, but we persevere and enjoy all the same. But summer’s come and gone in an instant! We complain when it’s not here and complain when it is. Electric fans take root next to beds. Our tempers rise and we find ways to keep cool via ice-pops and lollies, cold beers and cold showers. Please also remember dogs, cats, birds and bees: putting a big pot of water outside of your front door can help thirsty pets passing by or foxes in need of a drink. A small dish of sugared water helps out bees too!
The Cottenham Newsletter team held a meeting in July. As you know, we are all volunteers and we are subject to many di erent things when bringing you your six issues every year. For example, editorials being late, printers being too busy, so we can’t always guarantee a copy on your doorstep on the first day of the title’s two months. Please rest assured we all work hard to put together the Newsletter, but factors will try to thwart us from time to time!
As usual, please send articles, details of upcoming events and anything else you want your village to know about to: cottenhamnewsletter@gmail.com I will read everything so do get in touch – even if it’s just to say hello! If you send in photos, please get permission from the subject and photographer first (and do include the photographer’s name so they can be credited).
By submitting photographs you confirm you have permission from the photographer and anyone in the photos for us to print them.

COVID-19 has set us all back over the last few years, so the Cottenham British School Trust would like to help if possible. The Cottenham British School Trust have been making financial awards for over twenty-five years which have benefited many residents from Cottenham and Rampton. Our schools and youth groups have also received awards.

A delegation from the Fen Edge Twinning Association visited the French town of Avrille from 26 to 29 May this year. It was our first visit since 2019 and it was fabulous. We were welcomed by the Mayor of Avrille with drinks and delicious nibbles, and speeches from both sides recalling past achievements and outlining hopes for the future of our relationship. There was a very special moment when ‘Bruno’, one of the leading lights of the French twinners and their o cial translator, had to translate the very generous praise that was heaped upon him by the French o cials as they announced his retirement.
After the reception we all went to our hosts’ homes for dinner and relaxing entertainment.
On Saturday, each host found a di erent way of entertaining us before we came together again for dinner in a very pleasant restaurant near to an ancient water mill. Very good food and lots to talk about!
On Sunday, we were taken to another local beauty spot for a very French picnic lunch where we were invited to join in with the games or simply explore the uncultivated countryside. In the evening, we all attended dinner parties hosted by our own or someone else’s host. It was very
hard having to get up early on Monday for our flight home.
We all agreed we had had a very good time; we had learned a lot and we had made the world a little smaller.
We were so inspired that we have decided to resurrect our once very popular Quiz Night. There will be fun, food and a licensed bar, courtesy of the new Cottenham Village Hall. The date is Friday 29 September and doors open at 7pm. Other details (prices, menu, how to get tickets) are still to be decided so please check our Facebook page (Facebook. com/fenedgetwinning).
And finally ...
We could not help noticing that our average age is increasing and we’ve realised we have not been doing enough to encourage new members to share in the joys of twinning. Membership of the Fen Edge Twinning Association is FREE, it is FUN and it is open to ANYONE who lives in one of the Fen Edge Villages (Cottenham, Landbeach, Rampton, Waterbeach and Willingham). For more information please email fenedgetwinning@gmail.com, visit our Facebook page or come to the quiz! You don’t have to speak French to join us – the only qualification needed is to enjoy making friends!
COVID-19 was bad and still is. I lost friends and family, as did many others. A silver lining, if we choose to see one, is that there was a rise in local trade and a rise in cottage industries, including in Cottenham.
More people are working from home. Some are just ditching the communal o ce environment for the safety and security of their own home or premises, while others are leaving their jobs and setting up their own business. If COVID has taught us anything, it’s that many people do not need to be in an o ce environment to produce good work. Some strive more when working from home, and the added safety and security is beneficial to our physical and mental health.
COVID has hit di erent people in di erent ways. We have seen a shift in the landscape of how we work. The e ects of this shift have created opportunities for those who have chosen to take them, but of course, this has not been the case for everyone as we have seen job losses and businesses forced to close. One thing I think we can all agree on is that the change has been significant! So, with the rise of new businesses and the growth of existing local businesses, I believe some recognition needs to be given.
I have mentioned in previous issues of The Newsletter that I would like to point out some of these local businesses and shine a spotlight on them, so each issue I will do just that.
Our new season starts in September. Membership fees are due at the first meeting on 8 September, when we will hold our AGM. A very interesting programme of talks is scheduled, taking us through to Spring 2024 and providing great value for money. We meet for talks on the second Friday of the Month at 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. Everyone is welcome to join us.

In August we take a break from our regular meetings, but on Friday 11 August our Evening Drinks Party will take place from 6.30 pm in the garden of Mick and Helen Saul in Kingfisher Way, Cottenham.
The talk on Friday 29 September will be ‘Unexpectedly Hardy’, by Tim Fuller, Horticulturist. From September, half-price membership is available for £10, lasting until the February AGM.
The Cottenham- (and Sa ron Walden-) based choir Tyrannochorus sometimes rehearses in All Saints Church and it has recently been singing a song by Burt Bacharach and Carole Bayer Sager, ‘That’s what friends are for’. The church has lovely acoustics. I wondered if readers of the Cottenham Newsletter know what the ‘Friends of All Saints, Cottenham’ (FoAS) are for. The nature of the a ection and commitment is not the same as in the song, but there are echoes of it.
The club meets at Franklin Gardens Community Room, usually on the last Friday of the month. Refreshments are served from 7.30 pm followed by a talk starting at 7.45 pm and closing with a ra e, with prizes kindly donated by members and the committee. Non-members are welcome to try a single meeting for £3.
For further information please contact Sarah Dumont on 01954 260482
The FoAS is not part of the church as an organisation. It is a community organisation set up just four years ago to support the ongoing care and preservation of the All Saints’ church building in Cottenham. It acquired charitable status a year later. Not all members of the FoAS, or of its committee, are connected with the church, but all value the existence in our village of this remarkable late mediaeval building in good and usable condition. FoAS members want to do what they can to help ensure that it does not risk decline from lack of any needed repair and works well for its users. It is an iconic building in the village: its importance is recognised by Historic England in its Grade I listing.
The FoAS contributions could not currently provide enough money if a major repair were needed, such as renewal of the roof, but it has paid for a repair to the clock, a repair to some stonework and for a digital projector and screen. When a significant repair is needed funds have to be sought by the local church authorities by way of grants,
as the Church of England itself does not provide the necessary financial resources. Community contributions are therefore very important.
FoAS raises money ‘in good times’ and makes donations to the church authorities ‘in bad times’ (as the song has it!). It has raised money by holding concerts, quizzes, a wine tasting, an astronomy evening, a theatrical production and open days (although the building is open every day!).
If you have other ideas for its use, please do get in touch at: friendsofallsaintscottenham@gmail.com
Future events being planned include a display about the building on 16 September as part of Open Cambridge, a quiz on 7 October, another astronomy evening in November (clear skies permitting), concerts by Camerata East, the Fen Edge Orchestra, Cottenham Brass and by music students. Look out for posters and notices on social media and the FoAS website. Finally, do come along and acquaint yourself with All Saints Church and what it o ers our community

Rampton/Oakington Road roundabout
We were disappointed to learn that this project has yet again been delayed. Currently there is discussion between District, the developers and Highways regarding the length of time the works will take and approving the necessary road closure permit. Similarly the Toucan crossing which was expected in June has also been delayed.
Tilia
Tilia are still being pressed on breach of conditions regarding their drainage from their site on Rampton Road into Les King Wood. We are closely monitoring and are also pressing for action on the maintenance of the wood.

The maintenance handover to the PC from the developer is currently
going through the legal process. A commuted sum will be given to the Council to cover the cost of maintenance over the next 10 years by our contractors.
Tenison Manor
We have met with Persimmon regarding the adoption of the estate and balancing pond on Broad Lane. They are working with Anglian Water who require them to install a hardstanding platform with handrails on each of the adoptable headwall outfalls. The work on the swales will include cleansing and desilting the swale channels and also provide about a 3m clearance from the headwall structure. There will be some grilles that will be replaced and a CCTV survey work on all the outfalls. We currently expect all works to be completed by the end of this year.

Over the summer we will be undertaking some substantial improvements to the roof and changing the guttering. We had also hoped to replace the old heating system, but this is proving more complex than originally anticipated. We’re continuing to investigate the options and this remains a priority for the building.

As the football season comes to a close, we are able to celebrate a really successful year for Cottenham Colts. We managed to provide football to our community with 15 boys teams from U7s right through to U18s, 6 girls teams, a flourishing Monday night soccer school and a well-established Wildcats centre. Some highlights of the year included our U12 Boys winning the league and our U12 Girls coming runners up in their league and winning the District Cup Final through their school. Must be something about that year group!

After seven years the sun sets on our U18 Girls team who are an amazing bunch, leading the way for girls’ football at the club. Managed by Dave Burkett they leave a legacy of teams in their wake and we wish them all well for the future.
As the new season gets underway in September many teams will be looking for new players so if there is any interest
in joining Cottenham Colts please do get in touch. This is especially pertinent for the Boys U15 Red team (Year 10 next year) who are looking for outfield players. So if your son is interested please get in touch with Neil McDiarmid via the club.
Thank you to both the Parish Council and Cottenham Village College who provide venues for our teams to play their matches come rain or shine. But most of all thank you to our players who continue to represent the village in such a positive way on the pitch throughout the season.
As I write, Renegades have just returned to training in readiness for the new season which starts in mid-September. Early September will see us playing Cambridge (at CVC on Sept 2) and Royston (in Royston on Sept 9). Renegades managed to survive in the very demanding league they were promoted to last season and are preparing for another challenging season.
The league we are in now spans the whole of East Anglia and includes teams from Fakenham north of Norwich and Norwich Crusaders to Sudbury 2, Woodbridge, Colchester 2, Mersey Island and Thurston in the south. Local teams are also involved, including Shelford 3 and Newmarket. We also get to play in Bedford for the first time against Bedford Athletic 2. It will be an interesting season as new rules on tackle height will be in place and there is a great deal of uncertainty about
how consistently they will be applied and their e ect on how the game will be played. September and October promise some champagne rugby as the best teams in the world gather in France for the Rugby World Cup. Hopefully, this will inspire more participation in the game at grass roots level.
If you fancy trying your hand at rugby, Renegades are always on the lookout for new players. You may have played at school or with a club a while back and would like to get back into it. Or maybe you have never played but think you might like to try it out. Either way, you will get a great welcome if you come along to try out Renegades. Renegades take the game seriously but having fun is what the club is really about. If you are interested, have a look at the Renegades website (http://renegadesrugby.net/) and come along to watch a game and meet the players. You will get a warm welcome.

By the time you’re reading this, the cricket season will be just about reaching its conclusion, but as I write, we are not yet halfway through. Both of our senior teams won promotion last season so we knew this summer was going to be much tougher and that’s certainly been the case! The first XI have been scoring well, posting over 200 in pretty much all their matches, but that has only proved good enough twice so far. Plenty of time to go to pull things round, though. Our 2nds have had a similarly hard time, but we’ve been competitive and ran the League leaders very close recently, losing by just one wicket. Fingers crossed for both teams in the weeks ahead. As I’ve said before, as long as everyone is enjoying their cricket and doing their level best for the Club, we’re pretty happy.
As regards our juniors, we are well under way with both our ECB All Stars and Dynamos programmes. These are brilliant activities for 5–8-year-old boys and girls and 8–11-year-olds respectively and they’ve been very successful. It does require good, energetic and enthusiastic people to run them, though, and huge thanks are due to Duncan Robson, Shaun Pepper and Rich Symons for coaching the youngsters for the eight weeks of both programmes.
Our under-12 squad (actually a mixture of Years 5, 6 and 7, so really young), are well into their summer term season. They have all improved since last year, and despite tough opposition at times and playing against older and more experienced players, I’ve been very pleased with the way they have stood up to things.
Courage and bravery are certainly tested when a County quick bowler is firing in short balls at your body!! Just this week we notched our first victory this term at Fulbourn, which was great to watch. The main aim at this age, though, is to foster a love of the game in all our young players and see that improvement, year on year. With a bit of luck, an exciting and close Ashes series will go some way to helping with all this as well!
Anyone interested in joining us for next season to help keep the Club thriving and moving forward should contact any one of us. We’re a very friendly Club and you’ll be given an extremely warm welcome. All our social media links are listed opposite and please do keep an eye out for our regular reports in the local village publications.
Village Tidy-Up
Date:
Sunday 17 September
Time: you decide!
Location: Cottenham!
How to participate:
This event is all about coming together as a community and making a positive impact on our beloved village. It is time to roll up our sleeves, put on our gloves, and participate in the upcoming Village Tidy-Up Day!
Participating in the Village Tidy-Up Day is easy! Simply mark the date on your calendar, gather your family and neighbours, and tidy your street. Don’t forget to wear comfortable clothing and suitable shoes, and bring along your own reusable water bottle and enthusiasm! Litter picking equipment is available to borrow from Sustainable Cottenham. NB: we appreciate that some roads i.e. Histon Road and the High Street, are longer than others so we may need to break those up into sections. Once you have decided to do something with your neighbours, email clerk@cottenhampc.org.uk so we can keep a track of which streets are being tidied.
Together, let’s make Cottenham cleaner, greener and even more wonderful!
What to expect: The Village Tidy-Up Day is an opportunity for us, as proud residents of Cottenham, to show our love for our community and the environment. It’s all about working hand in hand to clean up litter and debris from public spaces, streets and parks. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet your neighbours, make new friends and strengthen our sense of community. Together we can accomplish great things.
Activities:
Litter patrol: You can target streets, parks, and other public areas to pick up litter and dispose of it properly. Let’s make our village sparkle!
Green beautification: Set up teams to tackle weeds around pavements and street furniture and reclaim pavements from overgrown vegetation. You may need to check with the owner first.
Did somebody mention potholes?: See it, report it. Make a note of any defects in your street, be it potholes, a problem with pavement surfaces, broken street lights or bollards, or faded road markings. They can all be reported on the County Council website for repair. highwaysreporting. cambridgeshire.gov.uk/
Community: Community: This is not just a clean-up day; it’s a chance to connect with fellow residents, make new friends, and celebrate the joy of giving back.
Together, We Can Make a Di erence: The success of the Village Tidy-Up Day relies on each and every one of us. Let’s show our commitment to a cleaner and greener Cottenham by being a part of this event. Whether you can spare an hour or the whole day, your contribution matters. Spread the Word: We believe that the success of this event lies in the participation of our entire community. Please spread the word among your friends and family. The more hands we have on deck, the bigger impact we can make. Let’s show everyone what our village is capable of when we come together for a common goal.

With the recent closure of the Sawston Drama Festival after running successfully for many years, and a desperate need for more theatre in Cambridgeshire, various regional drama groups are extending auditions and making an e ort to put on new writing and shows that are less traditional.
In the spirit of the old one-act plays and with new writing at the forefront, Cottenham-based film and theatre production company ROOMS101 are looking to start up a COTTENHAM THEATRE FESTIVAL.
The Festival would be held over a number of days and evenings during one week in a venue in Cottenham in summer 2024. It would feature a variety of short plays or one-act plays from old and new writing.
Kicking o the festival next summer would be ROOMS101’s own production of ‘KIDULTS’ – a new musical – which is based on the book: www.goodreads.com/book/ show/43745768-cautionary-tales-forkidults
I would love to hear from anybody who would like to take part in the festival, by submitting a script of a running time of up to 45 minutes, directing a production or performing. Please email: markjtunstall@gmail.com for more information.
Another spotlight this issue falls on local dance teacher – Sue Danser (great name!) We’d love to promote local businesses in Cottenham in this way, so please get in touch if you’d like to appear in the Cottenham Newsletter.

Mark Tunstall caught up with Sue to find out more:
Sue: I started teaching line dancing 25 years ago, shortly after I became a qualified exercise-to-music instructor. I went to some line dancing classes as a fellow instructor said she was going to teach it and I was curious to see what it was like. I thoroughly enjoyed it and decided this is the job for me!
I learned from a fantastic instructor called Maria Field, who encouraged me to teach, and we are still friends to this day. I’ve been told I’m a great instructor, which makes the job even more rewarding, although I don’t see it as a job because it is such fun!
The classes are held in Haddenham, so not far from Cottenham. I also run classes in March and Manea.
Many people say that line dancing has
changed their lives for the better, helping with their mental health, fitness, mood, weight loss, memory and coordination. It also gets them out of the house and socialising, as many people stay for drinks after class and go to line dance social evenings that include a disco, live singers or both.
Taking part in line dancing can also lead to line dance weekends away and even line dance holidays abroad and cruises! A word of warning ... it’s addictive!
I could never imagine my life without line dancing as I have made life-long friends in the world of line dancing. You can too!

Butchers
The pond level appears to be mainly controlled by the water table level rather than surface water which makes them di erent to the balancing pond in the neighbouring field. There is good clay content, so they are holding winter rains well into spring and summer too, but it was always the plan that the shallowest pond and shallow areas of the other two ponds would dry out to varying degrees over the summer. Temporary ponds are extremely beneficial to wildlife and, counter intuitively, the most stable pond environment (because they don’t silt up as quickly as permanent ponds). There would have been many more temporary pond sites across the countryside before increased drainage and agricultural intensification, and aquatic species have evolved alongside these. The definition of a temporary pond is a pond which contains water for four or more months of the year, which shows quite how ephemeral they can be.
Unfortunately, their potential as wonderful wildlife habitat doesn’t do anything to improve their current appearance! The unsightly weeds around the wider area of the ponds are due to the recent soil disturbance and with suitable management should reduce, to be replaced with wild flowers and nectar species as are already in evidence in some areas. Some areas were sown with wildflowers a few months ago and finally started to look colourful in July, once the other growth was cut back by volunteers. Our hope is that these areas

will be expanded by future volunteer work parties, with support from the New Life on the Old West project. The ponds will green up given time and a small patch of yellow flag iris planted in winter has just about established itself in the main pond, which is a positive sign. The ponds will continue to be monitored this year. If colonisation remains low, the addition of a number of other aquatic plant species such as reedmace, marsh marigold and marsh sowthistle will be added next spring. Once aquatic plants become established they spread quickly and will massively improve overall appearance and reduce evaporation through their shading e ect.
The hedge whips are tough and can cope with hard conditions and dry spells. They are slow to grow at first however –establishing a root structure is their initial priority. So, as with greening the ponds, patience is needed. Once the hedge is well established this too will provide some shading for the ponds and reduce evaporation.
In July I spoke with Stephen Gawthroup, who runs the butchers with his sister, Nicola, and his sons Lee and Sam. His is the third generation to do this, since Stephen’s grandfather opened the business in 1919, making it Cottenham’s oldest business, according to Stephen.
The Cottenham Mobile Warden Scheme, a registered charity, was started in 1997. Since that time we have been able to give help, support and daily contact to many in the village who want to stay in their own homes for as long as possible.
The scheme not only gives reassurance to the members that they will have a morning phone call but also to their relatives who often live miles away. During the phone call we can hear if they are well or need to contact a doctor or family member. We can also do emergency shopping or collect a prescription. If we cannot make contact, for any reason, we go and let ourselves in to the member’s home to ascertain if everything is ok. We can then contact the emergency services if necessary. We do a visit at least once a week, where we can have a face-to-face chat, read any important mail, test life lines and smoke alarms, etc.
Associate members also come into the scheme when their families are on holiday so they have peace of mind whilst they are away.
If you would like to hear more about our scheme and to find out if it would benefit you, or a friend or relation, please contact Pat Robertson, Chair: 01954 200080
As a recent consumer of Stephen’s topside of beef, I can heartily recommend the quality and taste! It is reassuring to know that the cattle are all well-fed and hand-reared locally, with no antibiotics or growth hormones (or hormones of any kind) used in rearing. No vacuum-packed products are sold and all the pies are freshly made on the premises.
The customer can choose the exact amount they want (no waste), ensuring that Gawthroup & Sons Ltd can be an economical choice for meat buying and destroying the idea that local butchers are always more expensive than supermarketbought meat. A single person is welcome to hand pick one or two sausages, etc., rather than having to purchase a family-size pack at the supermarket, which means less waste and plastic wrappings.
Apart from the fact that Stephen gave me a big pile of beef bones for Bobby the dog, I used the topside I bought from him to make the most amazing Chicago/Italian-style hot beef baguettes (recipe on page 19).

You will need:
Topside beef (any amount, I used 1kg for 2–4 people)
2 large onions
Beef bones
4 carrots
4 cloves garlic
Half teaspoon ground black pepper
Half teaspoon salt
Two teaspoons Bovril or Marmite
Thyme (fresh or dried)
Two apples/pears (optional)
The stock:
Chop and place all of the above ingredients (except the topside beef and apples/pears) in boiling water. Bring to the boil and simmer for four hours to reduce to ½ litre of stock. (Top up the water if the stock is reducing too quickly.). Pour through a sieve to remove bones, thyme and carrots and set aside.
The beef:
1. Prepare the beef by seasoning all over. Fry all sides of the beef for around 10 minutes. Set aside.
2. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees/gas mark 4.
3. Transfer the beef to a metal tray and dowse in olive oil.(Pour the remaining beef juices from the pan into the stock.)
4. Put in the oven for an hour, turning every 15 mins.
5. After an hour slice the topside beef thinly and place in a large square casserole dish.
6. When stock is prepared, sieve out the bones, thyme (if fresh sprigs) and carrots. (For a chunkier sauce, additional apple/ pear chunks and onion chunks can be boiled in the stock for 10 minutes before the next step.)
7. Pour the stock and onions and fruit (if using) all over the beef and return to the oven.
8. Cook for a further 1 hour (or longer for softer meat).
Heat baguettes in oven, slice lengthways, keeping a hinge to the bread. Spoon beef and juices (and onions, garlic and apple/ pear) into the baguette, close baguette and cut as required.
Serve to hungry family and friends and drink a toast to Stephen and family for the excellent beef! Good with red wine, beer or cider.

There was a nice case study write up about Sustainable Cottenham’s nature recovery work in the village in the district council’s Zero Carbon Communities newsletter. The article outlines work such as creating new ponds, maintenance on great crested newt habitats and coppicing that has been carried out by volunteers at Fen Reeves, the WARG field, Crowlands Moat and the Old Rec with support from various organisations. The article provides advice and useful links for other groups wishing to do similar projects. You can read it at https://bit.ly/ CottenhamNature
A new positive grassroots campaign is encouraging citizens to ‘Take The Jump’ of making six shifts to their lifestyle to combat climate change. These shifts are based on a study* which shows
these are the most impactful things individuals in wealthy countries need to do, and cover how we eat, travel, clothe ourselves and engage with systems. The campaign acknowledges that while government and businesses have the most responsibility, the transition we need to make can’t be done without each of us playing our part, and that citizens and communities can deliver over 25% of the carbon savings needed by 2030. You can Take The Jump for 1, 3 or 6 months. Sign up at www.takethejump.org
