The Fen Edge Dog Show was a highlight with lots of entries for Waggiest Tail, Cool Pup, Best Rescue and Best Furry Family. Clarissa and Daphne provided their own inimitable commentary, and I don’t think I shall forget Daphne’s spectacular aerial attempt to win the Best Trick category.

The Venue music programme ran on Saturday and Sunday afternoon providing a showcase for local bands. It was an open invitation including the Buskers’ hour and a segment for CVC students to take to the big stage. The audience sat in the sunshine whilst taking-in the varied musical styles. Along with hosting a children’s film afternoon, the Community Centre had its own ‘Unplugged’ music programme in the co ee shop, together with retrogaming in the hall. I couldn’t get the hang of the BBC Micro (oh, the irony) but I did win at Mario Kart for the firstand probably last – time. The event rounded out with some amazing displays by Luke Harries and the Silent Disco in the marquee, whilst lots of people gathered on the Green to take in the last of the sunshine and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere. There are so many people to thank, from our fantastic sponsors, the organising committee and volunteer Sustainable Cottenham organises village litter picks in the spring and autumn and will shortly publicise our next date – most likely a Saturday afternoon in November. Do follow our Facebook page or look out for posters so you can put the date in your diary. In the past, we used to cut back vegetation and clean the solar studs on the Histon Road cycle path as part of the litter pick. However, in recent years, there have been very few volunteers for this – perhaps Saturday afternoons are not good for cycle path users. Perhaps a dozen or so cycle path users could get a working party together to get the path in good order before winter. Please contact: that was fun!

Village

The first big event of the weekend was the PTCA dance in the main marquee on Friday night, which went o in its usual fashion. The number of slightly subdued people appearing on Saturday morning suggested that it had been a great evening!

From the Toy Library Fun Day and Tea on the Green on Friday, to Sunday Night’s Silent Disco and Pyrotechnic finale, we all enjoyed three days of fabulous summer weather and great Afterentertainment.alltheplanning it was amazing to see the Festival finally coming together. The marquees went up on Thursday and the stall holders started arriving on Friday morning.

In fact five of us decided to take on Beavers. Despite my misgivings that it would be really hard and timeconsuming, it has been brilliant. The basic training for the role wasn’t hard, it was just a few evenings on a laptop. The Cottenham Scout groups are really fortunate to have a permanent base and equipment. With 5 of us, we’ve put together a wonderful programme for, now, up to 20 children. Over the last nine months we have done a huge amount with them and had a lot of fun doing it; we now have a great group of Beavers who passionately love their Beavers evenings and look forward to each week. We have done science experiments, cooked chocolate cakes inside oranges on open fires, played brass instruments, learnt how to use a compass and read maps, sang songs, played games and made promises about the world. The kids are set now for further adventures in the scouting journey. And so here’s the problem: there’s nowhere for them to go on to. The Cub group in Cottenham is vulnerable to having to close and in dire need of leadership Sovolunteers.myplea is please consider what it takes to make that a possibility and whether you can help make it happen.

All parents want their children to have a fun childhood, filled with carefree adventures. For me, part of that was the idea of the scouting world – campfires, slightly burnt sausages, learning to put up a tent, tying impossible knots, a bit of risk and doing all sorts of outdoor activities. I put my child’s name on the waiting list to start Beavers and then thought no more about it for a while. But then the pandemic hit and most of the out-of-school activities closed down. When things opened up again, I hoped that Beavers, Cubs and Scouts would just carry on. What I hadn’t really thought about was that all these activities don’t just happen – people make them happen. People volunteer to give up their time to do this for our children and at that moment in Cottenham there wasn’t anyone still prepared to run a Beaver colony. So there was no place for my child to go. I was pleased and relieved when I heard that a few brave mothers had stuck their heads above the parapet and volunteered to get a Beaver group running. But then I started talking to the volunteers and realised that the whole thing needed more than two alreadybusy people – and with (quite a lot of) persuasion from them, I eventually volunteered to do the training to become an assistant leader.

Let’s Run Girls is a social enterprise which aims to inspire women to lead healthier, happier and more connected lives. There are a growing number of Let’s Run Girls groups across Cambridgeshire including here in Cottenham. We’ve been running in Cottenham since the beginning of 2022 and have a growing number of regular runners, some of whom were beginners only a few months ago and we’d love to welcome more local ladies to come and join us. Our free weekly run sessions are led by a dedicated team of volunteer Run Leaders who are passionate about supporting other women to stay active through running but also get into running for the first time or return after a long break. We recognise that running isn’t easy, especially when starting from the beginning, but the support of a friendly group of likeminded women can really help! If you can already run for 30 minutes or so continuously, you’re welcome to join our steady run at any time of year and if you’re looking to get started, we will be launching a new 10-week beginners programme in September We2022.meet at 6.30pm on Monday evenings outside the Village Hall. Cottenham Emergency Plan – more coordinators and volunteers welcome!

Civility Respect& pledge NALC (National Association of Local Councils) - the governing body for councils, believes now is the time to put civility and respect at the top of the agenda and start a culture change for the local council sector. We are proud to say that CPC is one of the first councils in the country to sign up to the Pledge. Signing the Pledge is one of the ways a council can demonstrate that it is committed to standing up to poor behaviour across our sector, and to demonstrating positive changes which support civil and respectful conduct.

The countryside around the Old West River is an important stronghold for rare and threatened species. It is located in between the rapidly expanding RSPB Ouse Fen wetland reserve and Ouse Washes to the west, and the National Trust’s 100year Wicken Fen Vision area to the east, potentially creating a significant habitat corridor in between. The river corridor is of significant biodiversity value and is a stronghold for many rare and threatened species, such as the water vole. The extensive ditch network across the area is often referred to as “the hedgerows of the fens” because of their high nature value. The area is also a stronghold for highly threatened farmland birds including turtle doves and lapwing. The part of the project to create wildlife ponds and ‘scrapes’ in the Broad Lane field has been completed. The spoil has been spread around the site and the bank to the rear of the site re-profiled to enable easier maintenance. Once we’ve had some rain the grass will come back (currently the scheme looks a lot bigger than it is). Planting of hedges/trees will commence late autumn. You can find out more about the project, which is being run by Cambridgeshire ACRE, via www.newlifeoldwest.org.uk

Cottenham is fortunate to have a Parish Emergency Plan and a Community Flood Plan. We are grateful to residents who have agreed to o er assistance in the event of an emergency –whether as owners of equipment, key-holders of ‘places of safety’, trained first-aiders or volunteers to knock on doors to alert people of danger and possible need to evacuate. As part of our regular updating, we have been contacting people to check whether they are still willing and able to help and that the contact details we hold are up to date. If there are any other residents who are willing to be listed please let us know (see contact details below). We currently have two Emergency Coordinators and it would be even better to have more – to increase the chances of one of them being in the village should an emergency arise. Also, the plan would benefit from a new set of eyes looking at it. If this is something you might be interested in, please contact Susanne Wolf 01954 251059 to find out more. NB: Your contact details are kept confidential and only made available to the emergency plan team, the council o cers involved in emergency planning and the emergency services.

a real buzz at the Village Hall* bar recently: the Jubilee, family discos, screening sports events such as Wimbledon finals and private events such as weddings. And there’s more coming up in the autumn. The bar and events team consists of members of the Parish Council and other community-minded residents.Aswellas providing a valuable meeting place for the community, any profit goes towards subsidising hall hire for Cottenham residents and the cost of running the many amenities at the Recreation Ground. Without the help of our volunteers we just wouldn’t be able to open. To make sure the load is shared, the team of active bar volunteers needs to expand. Just one shift a month would help so please consider joining us. Don’t worry, take the plunge, it’s fun and a great way of meeting people. The shifts tend to be for 2–3 hours and are for the regular Community Bar on Saturday afternoons (2-6pm), for specific events or when we supply the bar for private functions. On-the -job training is given and you will be teamed up with an ‘old hand’. For more information, email Christine Ward cllr.ward@cottenhampc.org.uk

We are thankful for the opportunity we had to welcome so many people from the villages of Cottenham and Rampton to our services over Christmas. Things are by no means ‘back to normal’ but we continue to look at interesting and alternative ways to support each other and bring people together in a safe way. As 2022 begins we hope and pray for safe passage through the pandemic and to be able continue finding ways to serve our villages. During Lent we plan to reinstate our well known ‘Lent Lunches’ where we offer soup and ploughman’s to raise money for our charities and the chance for fellowship. We are not sure what form this will take yet, in-door or out, we look forward to seeing you! Check out our Facebook page or website for more details.

Energy: the forecast is one of a further, substantial, increase to costs …. add to this that power cuts, too, may occur. Food: global inflationary pressures suggest further price increases will impact and these may be exacerbated by actual shortages.

The Government has been proactive; as it has e ected a one-o increase to Universal Credit (payable in two parts), plans to assist energy bills (by up to £400), to up-lift the disability payment by a one-o £150 and increase winter fuel payments to pensioners. However, full details and information can only be accessed online, and many, especially elderly citizens, have no internet access, meaning they may be aware of what might be available, but have no immediate means of checking it for themselves or accessing it, if a claim must be made online.

Information: While many of us, can google for information on just about every benefit available in modern Britain, those without access to the internet will find it di cult to access information on cash and benefits. Jo Brook pointed me toward the Local Energy Alliance Partnership (LEAP), which provides an explanation of how it can help, but unfortunately, once again, online access is needed to realise it exists in the first place! The reality is that a lack of cash together with an absence of information causes great hardship for many. Local Authorities need to take responsibility for inclusivity and make all information readily available locally (not just at Cambourne or City Hall), for the less fortunate/less well o .

Cottenham Newsletter | August /September 2022 11 Hungry & Cold?

Fund Winterhousehold-support-fundhttps://cambridgeshire.gov.uk/2022

I’m raising this issue because I’ve learned from experience that the potential for extreme stress (for the most disadvantaged) comes from two sources in particular: 1. a simple lack of cash, which is linked 2.to an absence of easily accessible information. Cash: A bank account is necessary to receive cash but the likelihood of overdraft facilities is pretty much zero; many of those likely to be most a ected will be on a variety of benefits; access to credit cards will be virtually non-existent; and the tendency is to live week by week, paying both electricity and council tax by a card system, and struggling toward the end of each month before the next benefits are due. No matter what the individual circumstance, the anticipated cost increases expected in the coming months will a ect us all.

Over the coming months anyone on any sort of ‘household budget’ is going to feel the e ects of inflation, given that rates are already about half of those of the 1970s which peaked at around 20%. This is likely to mean di culties for some and real hardship for the most disadvantaged who may get very cold and very hungry this winter without intervention from those in power and, closer to home, their friends and neighbours.

Mitigate hunger and cold Perhaps you already keep an eye on elderly or disadvantaged neighbours. You may be interested to know you can seek help or advice on their behalf from the Parish Council or District Councillors when necessary, and perhaps you might ensure they are registered with the Local Energy Alliance Partnership (LEAP). The District Councillors have (confidential) access to those who are in most need. There’s an argument that suggests those in need should do more to help themselves, but I don’t see that any one of us benefits from the misery of others, irrespective of ‘reasons why’, and so in quoting the well-known phrase, “Every Little Helps”, perhaps we can all do that bit more, for example, purchase a few additional items for dontation to food banks when doing our weekly grocery shop. This may not be possible for all of us to do, but given the generally poorly targeted increase in the winter fuel allowance may be a ordable for some of us. We need to work together to help stave o the traumatic impact of further cost pressures soon to hit some in our community. Rick Bristow

Cottenham Newsletter | August /September 2022 13

Currently the Club has one team playing in the Cambs FA League Div 1a. We finished the 2021/22 season very strongly indeed, finishing fourth after playing the top three teams in our final matches and coming out with one win and two draws, resulting in us having a big say in who won the league, which turned out to be Debden FC who were hugely grateful for our e orts.

Huge congratulations are due to all the team, which has got stronger and more confident throughout the 21/22 season, and to Harry West (Manager) and Toby Burkett (Assistant Manager) who have done a magnificent job in their first season in charge. Promotion from last year means that the team will face sti new challenges against a higher standard of opponent. Everyone is looking forward to the challenge, if not the extra travelling, as the range of opponents spans from Wisbech and North Walsham in the North to Woodbridge and Sudbury in the South. The team faces other challenges with a number of the best players likely to be out for most or all of the coming season having sustained injuries towards the end of the last season or over the summer. Therefore, we are particularly keen to hear from anyone who is interested in playing. Contact details are on the website (www.renegadesrugby.net). Of course, you don’t have to be a member to come along and watch the Renegades play. Home games are often pretty well attended. The good humour is added to by Tom Wykes doing creative things with the team bass drum! However, if you are not up to playing but would like to get more involved, the Renegades o ers social membership. For £40 (£25 membership fee and £15 suggested voluntary donation) you get membership of the Renegades, automatic membership of the Cottenham Club (our post-match gathering place), a branded poloshirt and eligibility to participate in draws for international tickets. 18 Cottenham Newsletter | August /September 2022 Cottenham Young PersonsLastweekI spent my time at the Parish Council O ce as part of my Year 10 work experience. I worked alongside the Clerk Jo Brook and the team, who made me feel extremely Aswelcome.partof my week, in the lovely new Village Hall o ce, I got to take part in the day to day activities, and experienced the jobs of the Parish Council admin team. Who would have thought how diverse the job was! My work involved learning how to put invoicing onto the computer system, filling, stock counting and managing bookings for events at the Village Hall facilities. I also helped with listening to queries of village Inresidents.addition I had the opportunity to learn how to apply for grants and reviewed the plans for the new playground. This was really interesting, especially as I was encouraged to provide some feedback from my perspective. I really enjoyed my time and would like to thank Jo Brook, Debbie Seabright, Beth Fleetwood and everyone else for making me feel very welcome especially with all the ice-lollies and drinks to help keep cool during the heat wave!

Showing sheep is an artform! ‘On the day I must clean their legs and heads before 5am to be in the ring at 9am. I must wear a shirt and tie and look as smart as my sheep. Baby wipes are good for cleaning your show ‘Thenboots!’you need to walk your sheep around the ring on a halter and hold them for the judge. The judge may ask you questions. I find this quite hard and often worry about what will be asked as each judge asks di erent things’.

Winning the young handlers’ championships at three di erent shows in your first year of showing sheep is not the norm, but for Lucy Winter she’s made 2022 one to remember.Backin lockdown most children went stir crazy at home but not Lucy. She got her school work done then was out on the family’s farm in Cottenham, helping with the daily jobs and the upkeep of the breeding flock of Beltex and Texels at Merton Hall, Smithy Fen. Lucy really showed her worth, but was missing out on showing the sheep she was caring for. Then one day a Blue Texel (Evie) arrived and LUCY’S BLUES was born. Saving pocket money, she bought three more ‘girls’ to add to her flock: Honey, Beatly and Flashy. They really were starting to increase in numbers and being black in colour stood out in the main flock. Lucy’s Blues has joined Merton Hall’s Beltex and Texels at shows around the country. Due to only starting out she struggles in the big classes at some of the shows but is learning and gaining on her ring presence and young handlers seems to be her thing!

20 Cottenham Newsletter | August /September 2022

Around the time of the Fen Edge Festival, I was passing the crossroads in the middle of the Rampton woodland o cially known as Manor Farm Wood, when I spotted a very fast-moving and flitty insect out of the corner of my eye. Having spent some time at our county’s two oldest woodlands – Monk’s Wood and Brampton Wood – that month photographing a tiny butterfly known as the black hairstreak, I imagined that one of them had somehow hitched a ride on my camera bag and made it to Manor Farm Wood. This obviously wasn’t the case, the black hairstreak is rare and they’re not particularly colonial butterflies. They have a narrow band of places that stretches from north of Cambridge southwest to Oxford and they seem to live and breed only where there are dense blackthorn thickets in well-established So,woodland.whatwas the flitty insect? Well, I stopped and got a closer look when it settled and identified it as a white-letter hairstreak. It’s a little bit like a black hairstreak but the white streaks on the underside of its forewings draw the shape of a longwinded and whimsical letter W. Like the black hairstreak, they are also rather rare, their caterpillars’ food plant being the elm, a tree which is now few and far between because of Dutch elm disease. There are, however, elms in Manor Farm Wood. There’s at least one not far from the blackthorn thicket that is interlaced with flowering brambles on which the butterflies were nectaring. I eventually had more than 20 sightings of the white-letter hairstreaks there. On my next stroll, I once again caught sight of a flitty creature, this time in the shadow of a willow tree on the boundary between the Cottenham Lode and the fields adjacent to Rampton Road. The butterfly, another hairstreak, I thought, given its flight pattern, landed high up in the willow. I got a grainy snapshot against a bright sky with a telephoto lens. It was su cient to see that it wasn’t a White-letter this time though, it was a purple hairstreak. Another rarity. I counted around nine sightings of them flying around the tops of the willow and occasionally landing. Their caterpillars feed on oak and there are several of those along this stretch. There were also some white-letter hairstreaks nectaring on brambles on that stretch a day or two later. As far as I know, nobody has noted these two relatively rare butterfly species in Manor Farm Wood or on the Cottenham Lode before. I checked with the county recorder for butterflies. Incidentally, in 2020 and 2021, there was another rare-ish butterfly, the green hairstreak to be seen in Les King Wood, although I didn’t spot it in 2022.
