I think many of us sat in shock as the Denmark players stood around Christian Erikson’s body, whilst the amazing medical staff saved his life during the Euros in 2020.

This opened eyes for many and prompted the absolute importance of access to defibrillators. Following on from this, the Premier League started an initiative where they donated defibs to grassroot football communities. We are lucky enough to have access to defibs at both of our football grounds, at the rec. We partnered with Cottenham FC and the Parish Council and once the security box is delivered this will be placed on the Village Hall and at the Sports Centre and will be

managed by the Cottenham Sports Centre team. When we were offered this defibrillator we couldn’t turn it down, so we spoke to our friends at Cottenham Fire Station, and we are so happy to partner with them and be able to put another life-saving device into our community. This box has now been registered with the NHS and should you ever need access to it, dial 999 and they will give you the security access code to be able to open the security case.

When the Covid pandemic broke out two years ago, we opened the Scheme to anyone in the village who would appreciate a daily phone call, without charge. Some 20 or more joined and these were shared amongst the Warden and Trustees of the Scheme. We have retained some of these as full members.

Cottenham Village Society This year we are belatedly celebrating our 50th Anniversary. Over the years the society has played a role in activities in the Village. The members have taken part in community activities, early in our history they organised tidying of the dissenters cemetery, including the inscriptions of the memorials here and in the Parish church. The committee kept an eye on planning applications and the state of the footpaths round the village and the society has donated seats and trees to enhance the landscape . The members of the education group have published booklets on Cottenham history from medieval to modern times. The most recent publication was Cottenham in Focus, which is an illustrated general

history of Cottenham, recently reprinted and available to buy.

The society continues to collect pictures of Cottenham and gives ‘slide shows’ of Cottenham Past and Present. Come and see our displays at the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations and the Fen Edge Festival in June.

Spring is in the air

The trees at Fen Reeves are still young, and there are not many holes and crevices for nesting birds, so the boxes will provide the shelter they need. Girlguiding is the leading charity for girls and young women in the UK. Being involved in guiding is a fantastic opportunity. In Cottenham we have 2 Rainbows, 2 Brownies, 2 Guide units and 1 Ranger unit.

But our units in Cottenham always value more help. We need a District Commissioner.

Cottenham currently has seven very active and busy guiding units that meet on various nights during the week. We are always on the lookout for new leaders to come forward to keep these units running. Some activities we’ve done this year are camping, crafts & badges, outdoor den building, swimming, movie nights, camping, pack holidays, district picnics, church service, maypole dancing, pizza making and going to The Big Gig – to name a few.

We currently need someone who could become our District Commissioner.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee As part of the Jubilee celebrations a number of events will be taking place on the recreation ground including a beacon lighting, family disco and The Big Lunch. Please see our separate article for more information (page 11).

NB: Unless there are more than 15 people standing for the Parish Council there won’t be a public ballot. We would highly recommend attending one of our meetings to see what sort of things we get up to and consider whether you would like to become a Parish Councillor.

The Parish Council is required to agree a budget before it can set its Precept. Once the Parish Council has forecast its budget requirements

for the following financial year, it requests this funding from South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) – in the form of the Precept.

SCDC then converts the Precept into an amount per Council Tax payer that is added to the Council Tax bill (according to the property band) for all the dwellings within the Parish area.

The Parish precept for 2022/23 is £319,855. On the basis of a Band D property this equates to £126.83 per year (an increase of £3.87 per year).

Projects 2022-23 As part of our budget we have made provision for various projects. A ‘quick win’ is the restoration of several benches and installation of a cycle rack by the sports Pavilion. We hope to get these works completed in early spring. A budget of £30,000 has also been set aside towards a new toddler play area at the recreation ground.

We are aware that this is a muchneeded facility in the village and are

already in the process of setting up a working group who will be looking to start consulting with residents shortly.

We hope to go to tender in June and will share plans, so look out for more details on our website. We aim to get contracts on site in autumn 2022.

Another large project involves refurbishment to exterior fittings on the Ladybirds building.

The team has continued to consolidate in its new Division, Kershaw League 1A, and is currently sitting comfortably in mid-table in March. Our main aims this season for the Red and Blacks were both to consolidate the 1st team and perhaps, if fortune smiled on us, to enjoy a Cup run. So far we are extremely pleased that we look to be achieving both with the side making it through to the semi-finals of the Creake Charity Shield in February, a match we lost 2-1 against Chatteris Town in a pulsating encounter with the visitors really hanging on at the end.

Harry West (Manager) and Toby Burkett (Assistant Manager) are certainly doing a great job in their first season in charge. We are really keen to keep the Club moving forward and are now looking to recruit some new players to further strengthen the squad so, if you have just moved to the area and are looking to continue playing or would simply like to get back into football with us, please do get in touch.

We would like to thank the new Club Committee for all their hard work behind the scenes this season. And while we’re on that, Club Secretary, Jason Stuchbury, is stepping down at the end of the 2021/22 campaign so we are looking for someone to take on this very important role for us. We very much want to place on record our sincere thanks to Jason for the great job he has done for us over the last four years. Anyone interested in our Club Secretary job, or just simply in finding out a bit more about it, please contact us.

Playing-wise, we’ll be taking a bit of a break after the season ends to recharge everyone’s batteries before we start preparing for the 2022/23 season in early July on the Recreation Ground at Lambs Lane (our home ground). Dynamos takes this a step further, with participants having the chance to play a fast-paced and exciting game of countdown cricket – a new format that mirrors The Hundred. It’s

designed for children graduating from the All Stars Cricket programme but is also perfect for those who are new to the game.

Lockdown had given me so much free time, with GCSEs being cancelled and not being able to leave the house. In December 2020, I decided to invest in equipment to start up my own business - designing and selling phone cases. Obviously, starting up a business costs money, so my Mum and I collectively sold costume jewelry through Facebook and raised around £300.

decided to combine my interests to help raise money for the Choose Love charity. I set up my business, Lilybet Makes, and raised £320 selling special edition bracelets.

I then joined a group of other young makers from Cambridgeshire, and we raised over £1600 for EACH (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices) by donating money from our sales. I’m currently raising money for Choose

Love to help people affected by the Ukrainian conflict.. So far I have raised £350 (and still counting!) by selling ‘SOLIDARITY’ bracelets. I‘m also taking part in another event at Histon Smokehouse on 17th April to raise vital funds for the WarChild charity. Starting a small business at my age is hard, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come and everyone I’ve helped. The thing that really inspired me was seeing how small businesses can help others less fortunate, and I remember thinking to myself that I could do that too. Lily Holden, Age 12

NATURE RECOVERY UPDATE We’ve been busy over autumn and winter on our Nature Recovery projects, which have focussed on spaces owned

by Cottenham Parish Council who have warmly supported us. These include: • a pilot wildflower mini-meadow on the village green • changing the mowing regime at WARG Field on Histon Road: we can already see rosettes of bee orchids growing • at Fen Reeves wood on Twenty Pence Road we have been coppicing some trees and clearing some of the brambles to encourage growth of a wider range of plants at ground level.
