La Siesta Park ready to open

Everything is practically ready for the opening of the La Siesta Park which began construction in January of this year on 44,000 square meters in this residential neighbourhood, which like many was so in need of public facilities. The new road that l the links the block between Granados and Henri Matisse streets remains to be

finished but is already paved and has all its signage in place. The estimate is that it will officially open in a couple of weeks. It will be one of the largest green areas in the urban area of Torrevieja and house a wide range of community-centred leisure facilities. The park is a multipurpose facility,

with several areas for sports, children’s games with shaded areas, paddle tennis courts and surfaces adapted for different disciplines such as agility, calisthenics and the now famous pump track for BMX bikes and skateboards. The park is already famous even before it opens with its 4,300 square meters and the largest paved pump truck in the country, which can accommodate all levels. Although the park has been enclosed by a perimeter fence, the pump truck has been used daily throughout the summer by dozens of fans while construction continued. La Siesta should have had a fully constructed green area on Tiziano Street since the 80s, when the enormous residential complex with thousands of homes was developed. However, as happened all along the coast and in numerous expat enclaves, the developer and builder sold the plots and moved on to prey on other areas

Family fun

of the province’s coastline without anyone holding them accountable for the lack of finished green spaces. In 2014, the City Council tried to address the work through an employment workshop, but it turned out to be a fiasco that ended up paralyzed and led to legal accusations over the use of public money - the case against the councillor who managed the work is still awaiting trial. The investment made then ended up crushed and since then 4.5 million euros more have been added, of which 360,000 euros have been incorporated at the last minute as a modification of the successful bidder’s contract to include an extra toilet module and an urban climbing area. La Siesta Park is one of the few real major investments that the Torrevieja City Council was able to execute almost completely in the previous mandate.

Orihuela double murderer sentenced to 43 years A man has been sentenced to 43 years in prison for the brutal double murder of an 80-year-old mother and her 50-year-old son in Orihuela last year. The court found conclusive evidence that the elderly victim succumbed to a fatal blow to the head, she died after being hospitalised and under sedation for nearly two months. It is believed that the son was tragically incapacitated, unable to defend himself or his mother after being attacked with a hammer. Despite the accused’s defence team claiming that he was unaware of his own actions due to a drug addiction, the presiding judge firmly stated that a cocaine dependency did not absolve him of being accountable for his actions. Following a plea of not guilty at the hearing, the jury deliberated for over

four hours before reaching their verdict. Prosecutors, along with the private prosecution lawyer, Irene Gasch, pressed for a total of 43 years in sentencing, apportioned as 20 years for the murder of the son and 23 years for the murder of the mother. Expert opinions underscored that despite the presence of cocaine in the perpetrator’s system, no signs of mental disorder were evident. He remained aware of his actions, leaving no doubt about his understanding and culpability. While the mother valiantly fought for survival for nearly two months, her 50-year-old son tragically succumbed almost instantly to the ferocious hammer blow, resulting in nine severe fractures to his skull. The community remains shaken by

this heinous crime, with the sentencing serving as a sombre reminder of the importance of justice for victims and their grieving families. The court’s decision aims to provide some semblance of closure in the wake of this devastating loss.

No Poppies for sale on the coast This year, poppies, a symbol of remembrance for fallen heroes, will notably be absent from bars and restaurants in the southern areas of the coast, including former Royal British Legion (RBL) strongholds such as Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada, San Javier and San Pedro. The absence is a direct consequence of the Royal British Legion’s abandonment and subsequent closure of one of its most successful fundraising branches. The RBL’s Orihuela Costa Branch ceased

operations in the wake of allegations of bullying directed towards the then Spain District North Chairman by OC members. The contentious handling of the situation led to numerous members departing in protest. This means that poppies, typically available at over 120 establishments in the region, will not be readily available in Orihuela Costa, representing a substantial loss of at least €40,000 for beneficiaries. The Poppy Appeal heavily relies on

volunteers, particularly Poppy Appeal Organisers and the dedicated volunteers who play a pivotal role. The absence of these crucial figures in Orihuela Costa jeopardises the feasibility of any campaign in the region. Thankfully, the highly successful Remembrance Day Service will still be held in Mil Palmeras, maintaining its status as the largest event of its kind in Spain. Attracting over 600 veterans annually, the ceremony has been diligently organised by local veterans,

taking place in the hallowed halls of Capilla de la Mil Palmeras at 10:45am on Sunday, 12th November. The event will be attended by the Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, local dignitaries, councillors, and members of the British Consulate. Spain District North traditionally raises between €150,000 and €175,000 each year through its Poppy Appeal. However, with declining membership, branch closures, and internal unrest, the 2023 contributions are anticipated to experience a significant downturn.

Breast Cancer prevention Torrevieja sea is the program saves lives warmest in the province To mark International Day against Breast Cancer, on 19th October, the General Directorate of Public Health announced that the 24 breast cancer prevention units in the Valencian Community played a pivotal role in identifying a total of 1,301 cases of cancer in its early stages last year. Health Minister Marciano Gómez highlighted that the Valencian Community’s Breast Cancer Prevention Program marked its 30th year in 2022. Over these three decades, the program has facilitated the detection of 24,000 breast cancer cases and conducted over 5 million mammograms. The Minister urged all women to engage in screening plans, underscoring their significance in the realm of health promotion and prevention. The primary objective of the program is to curtail mortality rates associated with breast cancer by early identification of lesions before symptoms manifest. This enables the implementation of less invasive treatments, leading to fewer side effects and a substantial increase in the survival rate among women. Presently, the participation rate hovers near 70%, while program adherence is close to 90%. The detection

rate has shown a consistent upward trend, approaching 6 per 1,000 women. The prevention units summon approximately 800,000 women between 45 and 69 years old from the Valencian Community every two years for bilateral mammographic examinations. In Alicante Province there are 9 units aligned with respective health departments. The participation rate exceeded 70% among 120,211 women, leading to the detection of 484 cancers. Breast cancer remains the most prevalent form of cancer in women. The Cancer Information System of the Valencian Community reported 3,308 cases in 2021, equating to an incidence rate of 116 new cases per 100,000 women, accounting for 28% of the total 11,761 cases of cancer in women.

Despite being the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in women, the Valencian Community maintains one of the lowest mortality rates for this type of cancer in Europe. In 2021, 709 women succumbed to breast cancer, resulting in a mortality rate of 23.4 per 100,000 women, comparable to the national rate but below the European average of 34.8 per 100,000. Breast cancer also exhibits relatively high survival rates in women, with 88% of those diagnosed between 2004 and 2020 surviving. This underscores the critical role of early detection, with survival rates at 95% for localized tumours (more than half of all breast tumours), 86% for those with regional extension (39% of breast tumours), and 29% for metastatic cases (6% of breast tumours).

Despite it being October the beaches of Orihuela and Torrevieja are filled with people sunbathing and swimming as if it was the middle of summer. Not only does the heat encourage people to take a dip on a date that was unthinkable a few years ago, but the water temperature is similar to that of June or September. This, according to the experts, is situation that should not occur, with the sea being two degrees higher than usual, at around 25 degrees. In the tourist capital of Benidorm weekly analysis carried out by the Benidorm Municipal Laboratory corroborate that temperatures have varied from those in recent years. According to the statistics in the last ten years, the water has almost always maintained the same temperature in the month of October. In 2013, the average for that month was 23.5 degrees, a figure that was repeated in 2014. In 2015 it stood at an average of 22 degrees; 23.2 in 2016; 22 degrees again in 2017; and at 23.5 on average the following year. The sequence is repeated in 2019 while in 2020 it was reduced to 19-20 degrees. In 2021 and 2022 it returned to an average of 23.5; until 2023 where the analysis already carried out place the average

at 25.3. To make a comparison, in June of this year the average was 23.5. At the moment the sea is over 25 degrees, something that is not normal for late October and two degrees above average. But also, in the southern area of Alicante, on beaches like Torrevieja, the sea temperatures are the warmest inn the Costa Blanca with 26 degrees. The current situation has its origins a long time ago. We have had years of constant warming of the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, which causes concern for the coast of Alicante and Murcia. It is what is called the “Balearic Sea” affect and it is the warmest area of the

western Mediterranean, and the one that affects Alicante. In June it can reach 24-25 degrees, also hotter temperatures than usual. And that heat increases in July and August with averages of 27 and 28 degrees. The hot water these summer months causes the accumulated heat to extend until October. However, a sea at that temperature in October carries an added danger because a sea that accumulates so much heat also has a lot of energy, which makes it potentially unstable. So, it could make any storms that occur “more energetic” with heavier rain. Therefore, we may yet have to pay for the consequences of an Indian summer.

Low-cost airlines bring record 43.5 million tourists to Spain

In a remarkable surge, lowcost airlines have ushered in a record-breaking 43.5 million international tourists to Spain between January and September this year. This is an increase of 6.1% and an impressive 2.5 million more visitors compared to the same period in 2019. These findings, revealed by Turespaña, reflect a thriving tourism sector in the country. During the initial nine months of 2019, Spain welcomed 40.9 million travellers through low-cost carriers, accounting for 55.1% of the total 74.3 million international passengers. In 2023, this proportion has risen even higher, constituting 59.5% of the total of 73.1 million passengers. In contrast, traditional airlines faced a struggle to match prepandemic figures, lagging behind by 10.9% with 3.6 million fewer passengers in the January-September period. Regarding nationalities, the British led the way, making up 31.3% of international

tourists arriving via low-cost carriers, totalling 13.6 million, an increase of 269,847 from 2019. Germany followed as the second largest market with 5.4 million tourists, a modest 4.7% decrease compared to pre-pandemic levels. Italy (+11.2%), France (+13.6%), and the Netherlands (+7.4%) also contributed significantly. Among the busiest airports, Josep Tarradellas BarcelonaEl Prat maintained its top position, receiving 9.1 million passengers through lowcost airlines, albeit a slight 6.4% dip from 2019. It was closely followed by Palma de Mallorca, which saw 6,697,314 passengers (a robust 14.7% increase from 2019); MálagaCosta del Sol, with 5,219,804 passengers (+10.8%); AlicanteElche Miguel Hernández, hosting 4,549,813 passengers (+5.7%); and Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, which experienced a decline of 18.8%, handling 3,448,274 passengers. Once again, Ryanair led the charge in this upward trend,

claiming the top spot for passenger traffic to and from Spanish airports, totalling an impressive 46.5 million passengers, a staggering 19.7% increase from 2019. Vueling secured second place with 35.4 million passengers, marking a 6.7% rise from pre-pandemic levels. Iberia demonstrated a respectable 3.4% growth, while Air Europa experienced a 12.6% decline. Adding to this surge, Iberia Express, another low-cost carrier, transported 9.1 million international tourists, marking an impressive 18.8% increase. In total, Spain received a substantial 73.2 million passengers from international airports in the first nine months of the year, reflecting a 19.1% surge from 2022, although slightly lower by 1.5% compared to the 2019 figures. In September, international arrivals to Spain numbered 9.5 million, representing a notable 13.2% increase from the same month in 2022 and nearly returning to pre-pandemic levels.

November guided tours The Department of Tourism is once again offering an attractive program of tourist routes. In the month of November, these routes nod to Miguel Hernández, to agriculture and the coast of Orihuela, and to the British population that have made the municipality their home. “It is a very complete proposal that combines the culture of the historic centre (continuing with the Hernandiano Autumn and the cultural offer) and the nature of the Palmeral and the coast, including a route in English for international residents,” explained Gonzalo Montoya, Councillor of Tourism for Orihuela City Council. The tours will also delve into interactive science with a “Visit to the Science Museum and Cyanotype Workshop”. This will take place on 5th November at 11am with the tour leaving from the entrance to the Desamparados Campus. This is a perfect opportunity for both children and adults to interact with science, since this interactive museum is a benchmark within its field in the Valencian Community. Additionally, within it there will be a cyatonotype workshop - priced at 3 euros - which is a photographic procedure by which a copy of the original negative is obtained in blue. It is a fairly new type of process that the participants will have the opportunity to do. Another new tour will be the “Miguel, the Poet Cabrero-Route through the orchard” a tour that perfectly combines the rich Oriolano

produce and the famous poet in the same way other tours have focussed on the poet and the historic centre. Additionally, on this route, Miguel’s not-so-usual poems will be recited in an ideal environment, those related to nature and the fields, which reflect the author’s beginnings. This will take place on 11th November at 10am from Plaza del Carmen.

Tours of Orihuela Costa The international public, especially the British, is in luck as on 17th November a guided tour has been designed aimed at the British community, either visitors or residents of Orihuela Costa. With the “Blue Trail of Cabo Roig” route there will be a tour in English from Playa de la Zenia at 4:30pm. We continue on the coast and move to the La Caleta Beach parking lot. There, on 26th November at 11:30am the “Military Detachment of Orihuela Costa” will take place. A very good opportunity to discover and learn first-hand about the function of this detachment where the COE soldiers (green berets) will explain what their work is and will allow us to see everything inside, something that is normally very difficult. And all this will be done in a spectacular landscape location, right on the blue trail of Cabo Roig, surrounded by coves with crystal clear water. Palms and palaces The 3rd of November will be the “Palmeral and Mining Furnace”

tour leaving at 5pm from the Palmeral Interpretation Centre. The Santa Matilde furnace will be visited, located in the San Antón neighbourhood, which forms part of the Cinnabar Mines. It is one of the few ovens of this type that remains in the Iberian Peninsula and, therefore, it is a very interesting heritage jewel to visit. Finally, on the “Los Palacios y el

Velázquez” route (10th November, leaving at 5pm in Plaza del Carmen), the Palace of the Marquis of Arneva and the Episcopal Palace will be visited, where the painting “The Temptation of Saint Thomas Aquinas” by Diego Velázquez can be admired. Registration is free for all the tours, but places are limited and must be reserved through the website: www. orihuelaturistica.es

Give a helping paw to Almoradi Animal Association

Alma Peluda, the animal association of Almoradí , needs your help and they have requested it through their social networks after suffering a robbery at their facilities in the early hours of yesterday. Fortunately, there is only material damage to regret, since the animals are in good condition. The volunteers discovered upon arrival how the fence of the enclosure where the

animals are kept was broken, allowing the entry of thieves who stole a wheelbarrow and broke several locks. The relevant authorities have already been notified of the event and, from the association, have organized surveillance rounds. The current situation of the association is critical due to the high veterinary debt they currently have. That is why, from the Alma Peluda association, they request help

to expand their cameras, thus guaranteeing the safety of their animals. Likewise, they explain that these devices have a high cost, since they have to work with sunlight and a SIM card. If you want to lend a hand to Alma Peluda , you can contact them through their social networks and through donations through Bizum 03109 or through their bank account at Caja Rural Central IBAN ES90 3005 0012 03 2386309716.

Torrevieja celebrates World Breast Cancer Awareness Day The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, accompanied by the Councillor for Public Health, Rosa Cañón, the Councillor for NGOs, Trudy Páez, the president of AFECÁNCER, Vicky Meneses, and several councillors of the municipal corporation, visited the tables set up in the Plaza de la Constitución to celebrate World Breast Cancer Day, where a manifesto was read by the president of AFECÁNCER

and pink balloons were released into the sky to celebrate this day. Later they moved to Concepción Street where the information tables of the Alicante Association for the Fight Against Cancer, chaired by Manoli Flores, were located.

Pink glass collection igloos in Torrevieja and La Mata Ecovidrio, the Contigo Foundation, a non-profit organisation whose aim is

to promote research, mainly into breast cancer, and the Torrevieja Town Council are carrying out the “Recycle Glass for them” initiative. This year, under the slogan “Investing in research is investing in life” Ecovidrio and the Contigo Foundation have formed the first women’s football team, with the aim of promoting prevention and self-exploration against breast cancer, and raise funds for research

into this disease through the recycling of glass containers, thanks to the pink containers that have been installed in more than 140 cities throughout Spain. Specifically, in the city of Torrevieja, four pink containers will be located in Plaza Encarnación Puchol de La Mata and Paseo Juan Aparicio (next to the monument to the Man of the Sea) for the next two weeks. From today, 19 October, this

initiative is coming to Torrevieja so that its inhabitants can join the team. From the City Council encourages citizens to come and contribute their bit. For the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, it is a pleasure to support initiatives such as ‘Recycle for Them’ Ecovidrio and Contigo Foundation, so necessary to advance research against breast cancer and care for our planet through the recycling of glass containers.

The International Educational Film Festival returns to Almoradí

In its eleventh edition, the International Educational Film Festival ( MICE ) brings us closer to Italy with the screening of the Italian feature film “The Right to Happiness” at the Teatro Cortés next Monday, October 23, in the morning. The screening is aimed at 6th grade primary school students in the morning. And, in the afternoon, there will be a Film Music concert by Italian composers by the Almoradí Conservatory Band directed by Juan Bautista Francés. Likewise, throughout the entire week during school hours, there will be screenings of short films for the students of all the Primary years of the Almoradí schools. The objective of this International Educational Film Festival is to bring cinema closer to schoolchildren and educate students through cinema. A great work that visits many cities and towns throughout the Valencian Community and that proposes the viewing of feature films and short films made by both professionals and students from all over Spain. The Councilor for Education, Susana Miralles , has been very satisfied to be able to

bring this initiative to more than two thousand Almoradí schoolchildren, which began last year with the celebration

of the Big MICE Day in the Auditorium and which will be celebrated this year at the Teatro Cortés de Almoradí.

BBC upgrade advice from Go Satellite

Are you living in Spain, have a satellite TV system to receive UK TV channels and recently the following message has started to appear on your screen whilst viewing the BBC channels: “BBC TV and Radio services on satellite will soon only be available on HD-Capable receivers. You need to upgrade. If you have a Freesat receiver, visit www.hdsatelliteupgrade.co.uk for more information or call 0330 123 1876. Sky TV customer should visit www. sky.com/help/bbcupgrade” The BBC is switching off its SD (Standard-definition) channels on satellite, in Q1 2024 and is replacing them with HD (High-definition) versions of those channels. How do I upgrade to BBC HD? There are two main factors that will determine how to proceed with upgrading your Satellite TV system to receive the new BBC TV and Radio channels in HD: Satellite Dish Size – In the southern Costa Blanca area (Gran Alacant, Santa Pola, Catral, Dolores, Almoradí, Rojales, Benijofar, Quesada, Torrevieja, Orihuela Costa, etc…) we have been able to enjoy viewing our favourite UK channels via a 1.4m dish. Unfortunately, the frequencies that the BBC HD channels have

been launched on are too weak to be received (all year round) on a 1.35/1.4m dish. Even the strongest frequencies offering the HD versions (10818 V and 11024 H) are too weak to guarantee optimal signal strength all year round. If however, you have a larger 1.8 / 1.9m dish, in this area, you will be able to receive a vast majority of the different regional BBC HD channels all year round, as long as your receiver is HD-Capable HD-Capable Receiver – Do you have a n official satellite receiver (Sky, Humax, Freesat, etc…) or a non official satellite receiver (GI, Amiko, Ferguson, GT Media, etc…). If you have either type of these receivers and it is less than 10 years old, then its most likely it is a HD compatible receiver.

If you have an official Sky receiver and not sure if it is SD or HD then the easiest way to check is to go to channel number 105. If you see “Channel 5 HD”, then you’re good to go and there’s nothing else you need to do. However, if you see “Channel 5” without HD at the end then you’ll be impacted and need to upgrade. If you have an official Freesat device, the quickest way to check on this type of device as to whether you’re going to be impacted or not, is by going to channel 799 on your satellite box.

You’ll see one of the following messages:

If you see this message it means you are going to be impacted by the BBC’s changes to its SD and HD channels.

If your device has an HDMI port, but you are still seeing the “BBC TV and Radio services on satellite will soon only be available on HD-Capable receivers…” message, then your device might need a rescan to bring in the new HD versions that were launched on new frequencies in February 2023. If you have any questions or queries about upgrading your satellite tv system to receive the BBC HD channels, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 965 725 670.

This message means you’re not impacted by the switchover and you should now have your version of BBC One in HD on channel 101. If you have any queries or for further information, please contact Go Satellite on 34 965 725 670, via email at info@freetvspain.com As mentioned previously, if the device is less than 10 years old, then its most likely it is a HD compatible receiver. Check that your device has a HDMI port on the back.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Further evidence of sticky UK inflation could give the BoE cause for concern after headline Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) held firmly at 6.7% on an annual basis during September. Core inflation, on the other hand, ticked moderately higher, rising from 6 to 6.1%, albeit at a slightly lesser pace than had been expected. However, UK inflation still remains higher than that of France, Germany, the US and the EU-27 as a whole. The UK now looks like it could meet the IMF’s recent expectation of having the highest level of annual inflation among G7 countries this year. The latest IMF forecasts also point to the UK maintaining that position into next year. Whilst headline inflation has been impacted (at least in the short term) by a recent spike in energy prices, consistent wage rises have also played a part in fuelling persistent inflation (see below) as businesses continue to battle to attract workers in the post-COVID era. Reports this week showed the UK wage growth is now exceeding inflation for the first time in two years, which could point to the cost-of-living crisis beginning to ease. However, the latest figures from the labour market also reflected a sharp decline in job vacancies, which is an indicator of a weakening labour market. The BoE’s task now will likely be to balance sticky inflation against a weaker labour market and a broadly weakening economic backdrop, reflected in data released this morning showing the decline in Retail Sales. Whilst there remains a high probability that the central bank is set to maintain its recent pause in rate hikes at the next meeting, the BoE will need to remain particularly vigilant in the short to medium term, especially if the recent energy price rises become entrenched. This week the pound has stayed fairly flat despite GBP/USD having maintained a fairly constant downtrend since the middle of

July. Overall, GBP/USD remains close to the 1.2100 region, slightly above the key 1.2000 psychological level. Looking ahead, next week is dominated by the latest UK employment report, combined with key PMI updates for both the Services and Manufacturing sectors.

EUR German investor morale posted an unexpected boost this week, according to the latest survey released by the ZEW Institute on Tuesday. The economic sentiment index rose to -1.1 from -11.4 during the previous month and the expectations component of the survey increased for the third month in succession. Perhaps helping to spur the positivity has been a gradual slowdown in inflation throughout this year. However, there remain many pockets for concern. The recent Israel/Hamas conflict, for example, which could still help to fuel higher energy costs, were supplies to be impacted for a sustained period. Having bucked the trend and raised Euro-area interest rates by 0.25% at the conclusion of its meeting last month, the ECB is expected to follow the recent trend elsewhere and pause rates at its current level at this month’s meeting next week. The ECB has hiked rates by 450bps overall since the middle of last year, but ongoing moderation in inflation has helped to ease the pressure for further rate hikes, with recent rhetoric from ECB officials seeming to back that up. The single currency also looks set to post only its second upside week since July this week, with EUR/USD trading at 1.0575 (as of Thursday afternoon). Indeed, GBP/EUR has also declined below 1.1500 throughout the week, highlighting the single currency’s domination over the pound of late. Aside from the ECB meeting, which is likely to dominate price activity next week for the single currency, key PMI updates are also scheduled throughout the region.

European police and firefighters games generate revenue for Torrevieja After 10 intense days of sports games with the celebration in Torrevieja of the IX European Games of Police and Firefighters, this edition has closed with a resounding success in terms of participation of all the tests carried out in our city. The Department of Sports Council of the City of Torrevieja, along with the organizer of the games and the other councils involved, have been working throughout the year in the coordination of all sports events that have been held on the occasion of this great European event, which represented a challenge to coordinate a total of 63 different sports and Torrevieja was aware of the complexity of many of them. The city of Torrevieja had a firm commitment to host this sporting event which, in its ninth edition and in our city, has concentrated more than 2,400 participants and has mobilized around 1,600 visitors and family members who have lived in Torrevieja a few days of holiday, enjoying the sporting events of this competition. A total of 63 sports, many of which took place in the streets of Torrevieja, triathlon, cycling and running events that also involved the direct participation of local society, which, at some point, saw these sports events pass through the streets of

the centre, leaving no one indifferent. It was very easy to see in Torrevieja the participants dressed in the costumes of the games and their families and supporters in all the neighbourhoods of the city. Many of them concentrated on a minimum stay of 4 nights, as they participated in different events of the same modalities, but the great majority of them extended their stay to a minimum of 7 nights. The event has generated a great impact at all levels, given that the end of September and beginning of October always represents in Torrevieja a change of season and season with a

drop in occupancy and, on this occasion, with the commitment of the City Council, Torrevieja has hosted these games that have generated a direct impact of more than 18,000 overnight stays and an estimated economic impact of about 2 million euros in shops and catering establishments in the city, as well as in hotels and numerous tourist accommodations. Finally, the Department of Sports values very positively this event and the impact it has generated in the city and maintains its commitment to sports tourism, to continue supporting and strengthening this growing tourism sector to help seasonal tourism.

Torrevieja to begin port access work The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, met last week with the traders of the Paseo de La Libertad and neighbours, hotel and restaurant businessmen and trade in the area of the Plaza Castelar, to let them know the actions that the City Council will begin to undertake soon on the occasion of the redevelopment of the port of Torrevieja. In the meetings held last week, Eduardo Dolon has reported that the works to enable access to the port car park will consist of a roundabout to be implemented at the junction of Calle Maria Parodi with Paseo de la Libertad, opposite the existing fountain in the Plaza Waldo Calero. This roundabout, as well as the new interior road to be built in the port, will allow road traffic to be redirected in such a way that, while the Paseo de la Libertad redevelopment works are being carried out, it will be possible to serve the fish market, the Marina Salinas Marina and the new car park of the leisure centre. The Mayor explained that in order to be able to execute this roundabout, and with the aim of ensuring that no stall on Paseo de la Libertad has to leave this location, the Town Hall has proposed to relocate 25 stalls, specifically those currently located in front of the Plaza de Waldo Calero, according to the provisional works project. The solution envisaged for these 25 “hippie” stalls is to create a new

passageway between the Customs building and the Paseo de la Libertad, just behind the current line of stalls. In this way, a new pedestrian circulation will be opened in the vicinity of the current Customs building, improving its visual integration by removing part of the wall that separates the port from the current promenade. The relocation of the 25 stalls is planned for after Easter 2024, so that the roundabout and the new road inside the port can be put into service, so that the road and the car park will be fully operational at the beginning of the summer of 2024. In the meantime, the City Council will undertake the first phase of the provisional works, which will start before the end of the year, and which will consist of the extension of the rainwater network running from Calle Rambla Juan Mateo to the discharge point inside the port basin. This extension, which will consist of a rainwater evacuation system made up of 3 frames of 3.00x1.00 m2, will resolve the incidents that occur in episodes of heavy rain. Likewise, Eduardo Dolón has informed of the dates foreseen for the start of the refurbishment works of the Dique de Levante, the start of which is estimated for the end of December 2023 or January 2024; as well as the different proposals regarding how the road traffic will be in the port area, once the definitive works of urbanisation of

the port area and surrounding areas have been tackled. Finally, the Mayor of Torrevieja has indicated that, in total, the investment planned by the City Council for the

execution of the extension works of the existing rainwater network in Rambla Juan Mateo street, the execution of an access roundabout to the port as well as the remodelling of

the Dique de Levante, amounts to a total of more than 12.5 million euros, to which must be added those of the definitive works of urbanisation of the port area and surrounding areas.

Torrevieja Hospital Breast Cancer Unit diagnoses 200 women a year The multidisciplinary breast cancer unit at Torrevieja Hospital diagnoses 200 women a year with breast cancer. This is the most common malignant tumour in women, the incidence of which has increased slightly in developed countries. The Breast Cancer Committee of the University Hospital of Torrevieja evaluated 517 patients in 2022. So far this year, the centre has assessed a total of 491 patients to date. The Torrevieja health department has a multidisciplinary breast cancer unit that aims to achieve excellence in diagnosis and treatment. To achieve this, it is essential that all the professionals involved in this disease work as a team, which is currently approached in an individualised manner, designing the best treatment for each patient. In the breast unit of the University Hospital of Torrevieja, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals works in a coordinated manner: diagnostic imaging technicians, nurses, surgeons, radiologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists and psychologists. Each specialist brings his or her knowledge and experience to the table. This joint work has proven to be the most effective system for the approach and treatment of this disease. In this unit, the professionals involved meet in the Breast Cancer Committee, where personalised diagnostic and therapeutic decisions are made for each patient. The best therapeutic options are decided on the basis of the immunohistochemical and molecular profile of each tumour, the age and concurrent diseases of each patient,

and even their particular emotional or socioeconomic situation. Medical oncologists and radiation oncologists decide and monitor the treatment of each patient individually. In some cases, chemotherapy is used first, before surgery, to reduce the tumour so that less radical surgery can be performed later. The centre also has molecular biology techniques that help to determine the genetic profile of each tumour, which has direct implications for treatment decisions. The surgical team of the breast cancer unit has extensive experience in implanting new techniques, such as the Scout markers. This system allows guiding the surgery to achieve the optimal identification of the tumour tissue, thus only the neoplastic breast tissue can be removed, providing better results both clinically and aesthetically. The Torrevieja health department has considerably reduced the number of aggressive surgeries such as mastectomies and lymphadenectomies performed on breast cancer patients, using, whenever possible, breastconserving surgery with less physical, aesthetic and psychological impact on patients. The centre works closely with Public Health and the Breast Cancer Prevention Unit of the Torrevieja health department, which carries out regular mammograms on all women in the department from the age of 45. When the slightest suspicion is detected in the mammography, the patients are referred to the university hospital of Torrevieja to complete the study with other techniques such as ultrasound, biopsy, tomosynthesis, contrast

mammography, etc. Primary care also does valuable work promoting healthy lifestyle habits which, according to the SEOM (Spanish Society of Medical Oncology) and other scientific societies, can help reduce the risk of breast cancer: not smoking, reducing alcohol consumption, following a Mediterranean diet, exercising, avoiding being overweight and, if you have children, breastfeeding are the most important recommendations. The survival rate for breast cancer

has improved considerably, due to two fundamental pillars: early diagnosis and the implementation of new treatments. Cutting-edge technology for early detection The Torrevieja health department has recently implemented new diagnostic imaging techniques such as a high-end mammograph with tomosynthesis, mammography with contrast or the new magnetic resonance equipment installed in the Torrevieja centre, which

has technicians and radiologists who are experts in this disease. In addition, in recent months a pathological anatomy laboratory has been set up, equipped with advanced technology, not only for the diagnosis of breast tumours, but also to determine their immunohistochemical profile (tumour receptors), which is used to classify tumours into molecular subtypes and decide the most effective surgical, oncological and radiotherapeutic treatment for each patient.

A preview of the programme for the 2023 Patron Saint’s fiestas The Councillor for Festivities of the City of Torrevieja, Rosario Martinez, along with the Councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, and the mayor of Youth, Domingo Paredes, have presented this morning a preview of the entertainment events to be held during the Patron Saint Festivities 2023. “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Musical”, Arde Bogotá, Camela and Mocedades with Los Panchos, are some of the main attractions of the upcoming Fiestas Patronales de Torrevieja. Tickets, at popular prices, go on sale tomorrow, Tuesday, from 11:00 am, at www.entradasatualcance.com and at the box office of the Municipal Theatre. On Friday, 1st December, the Municipal Theatre will host “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Musical” with tickets priced at 15 and 18 euros. This musical first premiered in London’s West End in 2013, breaking box office records until 2017. After several successful seasons, the musical came to Broadway in 2017 and toured the United States in 2018; in 2019, it began its tour of Australia and through 2021, visiting Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. The musical was adapted into other languages and, in 2019, opened in Milan and Norway; in 2021, it came to Brazil, France and Denmark. On Tuesday, 5th December, the Palacio de los Deportes “Tavi y Carmona” will host the performance of one of the most fashionable groups of the moment, Arde Bogotá, with tickets at a popular price of 10 euros. Arde Bogotá began a tour of festivals and concert halls at the end of May, which will keep them

travelling between 2023 and 2024. It is worth mentioning the presentation of “Cowboys de la A3” at the Plaza de Toros in Murcia, on 8th June, with an audience of 6,500 people, or the soldout show three days in a row at the Sala La Riviera in Madrid, which took just over four and a half hours from the time tickets went on sale. On 19th September this year it was reported that the Cartagena band was a candidate for two awards at the 2023 Latin Grammy Awards, in the categories of Best Rock Album with “Cowboys de la A3” and Best Rock Song with “Los Perros”. On Thursday, 7th December, also at the Palacio de Deportes, Camela will perform, with tickets priced at 10 euros, presenting their new album “Que la música te acompañe”, in which they pay tribute to the “Star Wars” universe. It is not the first time that they use cinematographic references in their covers and, for this occasion, they not only play on the title with one of the most famous phrases of George Lucas’ saga, “May the force be with you”, but they also recreate the aesthetics of the galactic series characterised as the main protagonists, Dioni in the role of Qui-Gon-Jinn and Ángeles as Princess Leia. Camela, icon and maximum exponent of techno-rumba in our country with almost three decades of musical career behind them and more than seven million records sold, continue to develop their ingenuity and creativity, establishing themselves as a unique and unrepeatable band in constant reinvention, with an unmistakable style that only belongs to them. Finally, on Sunday, 10th December,

the Municipal Theatre will host the performance of Mocedades and Los Panchos, with tickets priced at a single price of 5 euros. Mocedades are celebrating more than 50 years together with the Trio Los Panchos, represented by their latest lead singer,

Rafael Basurto Lara. They are a world reference of bolero and romantic ballads. The first dates they have already shared have been a total success, filling venues in Bilbao, Murcia and San Sebastian in Spain and in several cities

in Mexico and the United States. The show they present is simply magical, both singing their well-known repertoires and interacting at different moments of the show and, in short, making the audience experience it as a unique and unforgettable moment.

The bone-chilling documentary explores the first and only time ‘demonic possession’ has officially been used as a defense in a US murder trial. In 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson violently murdered his landlord, 40-year-old Alan Bono, in Brookfield Connecticut - the first murder in the town’s 193-year history. His defense in court was that the devil possessed him and made him do it, with the case attracting the attention of the Warrens.

Spiders web taco dip

Ingredients 3 large avocados, peeled and stoned 2 limes, juiced 100ml soured cream ½ small bunch of coriander 2 tomatoes, finely chopped ½ red onion, finely chopped 10 pitted black olives, sliced 50g cheddar or another hard cheese, grated Tortilla chips, to serve Method STEP 1 Scoop the avocado flesh into a blender. Add the lime juice, half the soured cream and most of the coriander (reserve a few leaves to serve), season with salt and blitz until smooth. Alternatively, finely chop the coriander and mash the ingredients together. STEP 2 Spread the dip into a shallow, round dish or bowl (ours measured 28cm) using the back of a spoon. Transfer the remaining soured cream to a piping bag or sandwich bag, and snip off the tip or corner. Pipe a spider’s web design on top. STEP 3 Sprinkle the tomatoes, onions, olives and cheese around the edge of the

Halloween Mocktail

Ingredients For the mash topping 425g can lychees 225g jar cocktail cherries 15 raisins 1 litre carton blueberry, blackberry or purple grape juice, chilled 1 litre carton cherry or cranberry juice, chilled 1litre sparkling water, chilled You’ll also need 2 pairs powder-free disposable gloves Method

STEP 1 Rinse the disposable gloves and fill each with water. Tie a knot in the top of each as you would a balloon, or use a tight bag clip to hold the opening closed. Freeze overnight. STEP 2 Drain the lychees and cocktail cherries, reserving the juices in a jug. Push a raisin into one end of each cherry, then push the cherries into the lychees to make ‘eyeballs’. STEP 3 Tip all of the juices, plus the reserved lychee and cherry juices, into a large bowl with the ‘eyeballs’. Carefully peel the gloves from the ice hands, add to the punch, then top up with the sparkling water.

Scan the QR for a reminder of what the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group offers. Please note that we have a new venue for our Monthly Meetings. I am pleased to announce that we are now meeting at Dilly’s Bar, Av. Castuera, 3, 03184 El Chaparral, Alicante. Group meetings are on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 12:00. You are welcome to attend. “A group member reported suspicious messages from a Facebook friend on Messenger.

She asked what she should do?“ The messages were about potential financial opportunities and nothing like the normal messages from this person. I immediately suspected that the friend’s Facebook account had been hacked. I did a search on Facebook for the friend’s name and found several Facebook accounts using the same profile picture. Clearly, there is no point in using Messenger to alert the friend as this will be available to the hacker. I advised contacting the friend by some other means and telling them that their Facebook account had been hacked and to change their password and report it to Facebook. To report to Facebook search for https://m.facebook. com/hacked and then follow the prompts. “What are Reels?“ Reels are full-screen vertical videos up to 90 seconds long. They now feature a suite of editing tools and audio tracks as well as trending voice and sound snippets. Reels allow you to add captions, stickers, and backgrounds; upload multiple video clips; use a range of filters; and loads more. Better for entertaining content. Reels are a newer way of sharing

content on Instagram and Facebook. They are similar to posts, but they can be up to 30 seconds long and include music, effects, and other creative elements. Reels are designed for people who want to create fun, entertaining content. “How can I check on my Google storage?“ For each Google account, you get 15 G Bytes of Cloud Storage which is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. When your account reaches its storage limit, you can’t upload or create files to Drive. To know how much space you have left on a computer, go to google.com/settings/storage or use the Google One App. Google One is a subscription plan that gives you more storage to use across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. Plus, with Google One, you get extra benefits and can share your membership with your family. You can use Google One without a membership to back up data on your Android or iOS phone, and also free up space in your Google Account using the storage manager. Brian Hoile Technology Help Group

The Arts and Crafts Fair with demonstrations returns to La Mata

The last event in a month of activities to promote local commerce in Torrevieja, will be an authentic arts and crafts fair in La Mata. It will be held from 27 till 29 October on the Plaza Encarnación Puchol. Like last year, the fair will stand out not only for the diversity and originality of its products, but also for the many craft demonstrations: the potter will bring his wheel to offer you the possibility of making your own cup or bowl, a sculptor will be carving stone and a weaver will be working on her loom. Other artisans will be making macramé jewelry, working glass with a blowtorch, turning pumpkins into beautiful table lamps, painting or modelling, so you can see with how much love and patience they make their pieces. Due to the success of last year, the councilor for commerce Rosario Martínez has once again left the organization of this fair in the hands of the craft association Amata, guaranteeing that everything that is sold at this fair is handmade by the same artisans who serve you. You can ask them for explanations or place special orders, for example for personalized Christmas presents! There will be a wide range of arts and authentic crafts: from

paintings, portraits and artistic ceramics to handmade shoes; from gnomes and puppets to soaps and natural cosmetics; from leather bags to horn combs or designer jewelry, in materials as diverse as silver, glass, macramé, ceramics and natural flowers. The musicians of Sol Redò often pass through the fair to create a happy and festive atmosphere and the younger visitors can have fun with board games or participate in workshops to make their own piece of crafts to take home. This year Amata exists 25 years

and to celebrate its anniversary it is organizing a competition of unique pieces: more than half of the participating artisans will exhibit a special piece at their stall and you can vote for the piece that you think is the most beautiful or the most original. The fair is held on the Plaza Encarnación Puchol in La Mata (Torrevieja) from the 27th till the 29th of October and opening times are from 11 am till 2 pm and from 5 till 9 pm, on Friday afternoon only. You can find the programme and photos from last year’s fair at https://www. puebloartesano.es/Torrevieja.

Visit the Cocentaina medieval fair

Experience culture, tradition and plenty of fun at the oldest and largest fair on the Costa Blanca. This annual event has been held on All Saints Day (1st November) in Cocentaina since 1346 and started with just a few stalls. Today, the cobbled streets of Cocentaina are transformed into a colourful medieval wonderland, boasting an incredible atmosphere. With over 700 stalls, the town is split into themed areas such an authentic medieval market, an Arabic market, locally produced crafts, children’s fairground, and a food court offering

fresh local delicacies, all cooked on the fire. Spare ribs, sausages, paella, and pizza baked in stone ovens are some of the delights you can try. You will also come across a lot of random street performances and theatrical shows throughout the day, birds of prey shows, workshops, and plenty of entertainment for all the family. The fair can be found at Plaça la Vila, 1, 03820 Cocentaina, Alicante. For a full programme of activities and parking options, please visit the Fair’s official website at https://www. firadecocentaina.org/es/

History of the fair The passage of time has influenced the content of the Fair, and what was once a regional agricultural and livestock market has become a showcase for traditional agricultural and livestock activities. Along with the exhibition of agricultural machinery and automotive equipment, the fair continued to gain popularity from its traditional craft activities, an Arab market, an authentic medieval market and many other activities, that bring together today more than four hundred exhibitors, who come from all over the country.

Over the years many cultural and sporting influences have enhanced the event including a book fair, classic fairground rides for the little ones, dressage exhibitions, music concerts, the popular Fair breakfasts, various street performances and dance groups, juggling, and demonstration workshops (blacksmiths, looms, bread, etc.) All these have made the Cocentaina Fair an event of international tourist interest. What seems like my entire life, my parents’ marriage has always been very bad. Dad used to deny everything and say it was mum, and submit our mum to emotional blackmail. In defiance, my mother used to flaunt herself at men and dress wildly inappropriately for a mother. She never had an affair as far as we are aware, although Dad told us once when we were very young children, that she had; this screwed me up, and also I think, my siblings. The depressing atmosphere was their reason for leaving home as soon as they could. My mother made it quite clear to us all for years, that once the children had left home, she would be leaving my father; however, she did not, it was just levied as a torment to him. It baffles me why people stay together when they are not happy. Now, I hate visiting and fume about it afterwards for days.

Your longer letter tells me that they are only on their best behaviour when the extended family gather. I would suggest that you try to visit with one, or both of your siblings. Talk with your brother and sister about how these visits are upsetting you, and that you need support on these trips. Try meeting with them out of the house, in a coffee shop, for a drink at the Pub, or walk in the park. You probably need to accept that the situation with your parents won’t change; your mum had the opportunity to leave her husband years ago, but did not take it. So, for your sanity; you must change the way in which you handle things. If all else fails; when they start to argue in front of you, tell them quietly that you will leave if they persist; and do leave if they do not stop bickering. Always reward good behaviour.

How to quickly check your breasts Self checking is about feeling for changes that are not normal for you This may be a lump, thickened area , or anything that feels totally different from any other area in your breasts. It may be easier to check your breasts whilst in the shower or bath as your hands are wet. This makes is easier to slide your hand over your breasts. An easy way to check your breasts is to: 1. Raise one arm above your head 2. With the flat of your fingers press into your breast, feeling for any changes, softly at first and then more firmly. 3. Check the entire breast area, from your collarbone to under

you breast and from the side of your breast up into your armpit. A good way to do this is to move your hands over your breasts, in an up and down or in a circular motion. This is an easy way to make sure you have checked the whole area. 4. Repeat the other breast Another way to do is is laying down. 1. Place a folded towel underneath one shoulder and put your arm above your head 2. using your other hand, check all over your breast, including the nipple up to the collarbone and under your arm. Swap the towel to your other shoulder and repeat on the other side

Under the motto “Pink is more

than a color”, the councilor for Social Welfare, Nuria Andreu, has stated that “pink is early detection, it is research and it is support for all the women and men who experience the disease with their families.” ”. With this initiative, Bigastro joins the activities organized by the AECC throughout Spain The council has scheduled a series of initiatives in commemoration of this date, since from Monday the Plaza de la Constitución is illuminated in pink on the occasion of World Breast Cancer Day until the 29th, the day in which it will have The 9th March against breast cancer took place, with a batukada, party, activities,

Quiron Hospital offers advice on self examination and breast health • Specialists recommend having your first mammogram at age forty • Tumours smaller than two centimetres have the highest cure rate On the occasion of International Breast Cancer Day, Dr. Joseba Rebollo, oncologist at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Oncology Platform, recommends that women usually perform a breast self-examination and go to the specialist doctor when they notice any abnormality, hardening, visible change, nipple-areola alterations, or axillary thickening. As detailed by Dr. Joseba Rebollo, “the breast does not have a uniform consistency and often has irregular nodules or thickenings, but it is a proven fact that the woman who self-examines is able to discern between a known nodule and one of new appearance that appears firmer and that causes a certain startle when noticing. Like I found out that wasn’t there before.”

Early diagnosis, key to curing breast cancer There are two keys to controlling the disease: improving a healthy lifestyle and detecting the tumour when it is still smaller than 1-2 cm in size. “In tumours smaller than 2 cm, the cure of the disease is almost universally achieved”, explains the oncologist from the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Hospital, “for

this reason, check-ups have proven to be effective in controlling mortality. In addition to regular health checkups using imaging techniques such as mammography, ultrasound or breast resonance, breast self-examination must also be performed frequently” The established clinical recommendation was to perform the first mammogram/ultrasound at the age of 40 as a baseline followup and then every two years until the age of 50. From this moment on, it is recommended to carry out annual check-ups until the age of 75. Although, as Dr. Rebollo adds, this recommendation is evolving and the age of initiation of controls is made earlier, at 30 years of age when there is a familial tumour burden, and continues during old age if there are risk factors and the patient is in good health.

Quirónsalud specialists in the study of the transcriptome for the treatment of cancer Thanks to the transcriptome, the specialists at Quirónsalud Torrevieja are able to study, in real time, the molecular characteristics of greatest relevance to the tumour at each moment of its evolution, what its strengths and weaknesses are, and thus administer to the patient a personalised treatment, appropriate to the characteristics of their own tumour. “For

example,” explains Dr. Manuel Sureda, an oncologist at the Quirónsalud Torrevieja Oncology Platform, “it allows us to evaluate whether drugs whose activity in this tumour is doubtful continue to be active; whether it already expresses resistance pathways for drugs frequently administered in that type of tumour; It suggests the use of unusual drugs for which tumour cells show clear signs of sensitivity, etc. In short, it provides very complete information

on the characteristics of the tumour and, “in Oncology, information about the tumour is anti-tumour power”. One of the main advantages of the transcriptome is the ability to obtain information in real time, since tumours frequently change their characteristics in order to “survive” in the hostile environment posed by the body’s defences and the treatments administered. “For this reason, repeating the transcriptome after

tumour progression has proven to be a first-rate tool to be able to offer a personalised therapy with greater probabilities of efficacy,” says Dr. Sureda. The information generated by the transcriptome can be very useful in any type of tumour, “although it may be more relevant in locally advanced or metastatic tumours, due to the genetic complexity that these tumours reach in their evolution,” adds Dr. Sureda.

Elche Medieval Festival focuses on the role of women Mulier, lux mundi’ or ‘Woman is the light of the world’ is the motto of the XXVIII Festival Medieval d’Elx. An edition to be held from 24 to 31 October, which gives prominence to artistic creation around the role of women and that has in music one of the main threads thanks to concerts dedicated to women creators such as “Ellas en Bizancio” by the prestigious group DeMusica Ensemble and “Las hijas del Trueno” by the EVOCA Project that will take place in Las Clarisas. According to the Councillor for Culture, Irene Ruiz, the Medieval Festival is the “most important meeting point of the autumn in the Valencian Community in terms of music, theatre and dance”. “We want to promote this festival to continue to be a cultural reference and tourist attraction and above all to bring culture to the streets to involve everyone”. The programme includes the presence of the Galician bagpiper Hevia in the Gran Teatro with his Celtic music and the early music concert by the renowned specialist Marcel Pérès with the Ensemble La Danserye. In Santa María, the concert “Sixena” will be performed by the Capella de Ministrers conducted by the renowned Carles Magraner. You can also enjoy the theatre with “Mañanas de abril y mayo” (April and May Mornings) at the Teatro Fernán Gómez, Centro Cultural de la Villa and Teatro de Malta and the Valencian production “Curial i Güelfa” by Bambalina Teatre Practicable. In addition, the little ones will be able to see “El gran traje” by LaSal Teatro throughout the week in the Sala

Municipal La Tramoia and in Las Clarisas they will be able to enjoy “Las aventuras de Martín” by Ensemble Musicantes & Tantatachán Teatro, aimed at family audiences. “The street takes centre stage again in this edition of the festival,” said Ruiz, with the dance show “Indala + Neønymus” by David Vento Dance Theater, the “Procession of the Sibyls” by the Elche group NSM Teatro, “Creators of the Middle Ages” by the Elche company Maracaibo Teatro and the great “Closing Piromusical Show” by Pirotecnia Peñarroja which will take place in Traspalacio. Not to be missed is the Medieval Market, which every year attracts thousands of locals and tourists. It will be held from 26 to 29 October in the area around the Basilica of Santa María, where there will be more than 150 stalls. The programme also includes the 1st Meeting of Ancient Music and Heritage which forms part of the UMH winter courses to bring the Misteri d’Elx closer to the musicians of Elche through its historical musical archives and will be given by the Emsemble La Danserye and Marcel Pérès. The aim of the course is to learn about the instruments that were used in the performance of the Misteri d’Elx in earlier times. The repertoires and functions that the minstrels played in their time will be played. The classes will take place in the Aula de la Plaça de Baix, where the first rehearsals and master classes will take place. On the 28th and 29th, the workshops will be held in the Las Clarisas cultural centre. Finally, in the Basilica of Santa María,

the students of the course will perform a concert. Another activity parallel to the festival will be the exhibition “Tañedoras. Medieval women, a view from the 21st century”, which will be on display from 24 October to 5 November. This exhibition reflects, through the photographs of reproductions of medieval instruments and an exhaustive iconographic study of women as players, composers and music makers. Thus, to illustrate the collection of historical instruments based on their medieval antecedents by Mª Ángeles Zapata and Lorenzo Cutillas. The author of the three posters is the Elche artist Antonio Mora, who was also responsible for the poster for the Fiestas de Agosto in 2023. Mora pointed out that they “represent different nuances, different faces of women in all their shapes and forms”. The proposal, he said, “are three posters with different compositions that aim to represent the thousand ways in which women are shown in all their splendour and emotional strength”. The posters bear the Latin motto ‘Omnia vincit amor’ or ‘Love conquers all’; ‘Si vis amari, ama’ or ‘If you want to be loved, love’ and ‘Mulier, lux mundi’ or ‘Woman is the light of the world’. For his part, the mayor, Pablo Ruz, pointed out that on this occasion Latin texts have been chosen. “It is important for the administration to

vindicate the role of Latin and relate it to the Middle Ages, which is not a dark and gloomy period but the period of the universities, the splendour of Europe, the codices and La Festa. It is a time of splendour that must be reclaimed”. He also stressed the importance of

taking culture to the streets. “This is the best scenario for promoting culture”, stressed the mayor, who indicated that this festival is a “demonstration of the commitment to culture for all”. He added that “culture is freedom, a duty and the cornerstone of good government action”.

Drivers beware – did you know the DGT can fine ou 200 euros for running out of fuel Drivers can encounter a number of problems on the road when they begin a long trip . One of the most important problems there is that you may go into reserve when there is little fuel and you have to visit a petrol station Drivers have to go to the nearest gas station or call the Civil Guard to come to the rescue. When this happens, it is necessary for you to contact and inform your car insurance or you may receive a fine from the DGT. What happens if you run out of fuel? Drivers who are allowed to stop in the passable area of the shoulder or on the road are likely to be fined up to 200 euros . Before they get out of the car, they must put on the mandatory emergency vest and signal everything with the V-16

emergency light. If you do not follow the regulations, the penalty will be 200 euros. Even moving the car by hand in the wrong place can lead to a hefty fine of 200 euros. If you take a container to the nearest service station and it is not approved container then there is a possibility you will receive a fine of up to 3,000 euros. You can also receive a fine of 200 euros if you run out of fuel in the middle of the road and remain stopped in the passable area of the shoulder or road.

How to find a petrol station in the middle of the road? Drivers can see if there is a service station nearby if the sign is blue and will indicate that they can stop on the highway.

When the sign is white, the station will be further away and you will have to drive a few more kilometers. The other option is for a sign to appear when the figure is 500 or 1000 meters , in such a way that it means that the service station itself is close to the route. Otherwise, if the numbers 750 or 1250 appear, they will have to distance themselves several kilometers until they reach it. Conclusions As you have seen, fuel and road safety is not a topic that can be taken lightly, so it is advisable to be attentive and comply with what is stipulated by law. What happens is that many times drivers are unaware of the rules. Please share this information with your family and friends

Sailors Hornpipe

It was a sight to behold for the many Spanish passers by. A dozen people, some of advancing years, dressed in striped shirts, white pants and hats, prancing around in unison to a strange tune. What on earth was it? Why the SAMM Flash Dance for 2023 of course, at the Caldero Day in Los Alcazares on October 12th, the Dia de la Hispanidad, national holiday where hundreds take to the beach to celebrate, with many clubs, groups, association and families reserving a pitch with the town hallSAMM, the Sailing Association Mar Menor, has participated for more than ten years, erecting a marquee and SAMM banner along with B-B-Q’s and tables. In recent years a Flash Dance routine has been performed each hour to entertain and attract the crowds.

For 2023 Christine, our Treasurer’s wife, suggested the Sailors Hornpipe, supplied the hats, organised the music and choreographed the moves which included swabbing decks, hauling on ropes, climbing rigging and drinking grog, all simulated of course. The performances made many people stop, watch and enjoy the spectacle while they had their photos taken with the dancers or asked about our sailing activities. Between performances the performers socialised, partied and played the various beach games on offer with the other SAMM members Everybody agreed it was a great social event but now it’s time to get back to serious sailing and our Sunday race days. To find out everything about SAMM and it’s sailing opportunities visit www. sailingmarmenor.com

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 17th of October we fished the first round of the Winter series at the Embalse De Argos in the Murcia region. Upon arrival we found that the water was quite a way down from our last visit and lots of floating bamboo had settled in most of the pegs. After a bt of clearing up the match started with 5 anglers on either side of the match point on what is affectionately known as the warm and the sunny side. Winner on the day was the relatively new member Gary Plant. Drawn on the second peg on the warm side he fished the method feeder with pellets and ran out a clear winner with 26kg of carp. In second place drawn on the same side on peg 9 was Richard wood. Richard used similar tactics and weighed

19.44kg. Nick Bastock took third place with 16.62kg caught with a mixture of slow sinker or method feeder from peg 3 on the cold beach side. Rods N Reels The following day we as usual fished the same venue after a night in the local Argos hotel. This time only six anglers took part with three on each side. Gary Plant continued where he had left off the previous day and won the match with 26.98kg using methoid feeder tactics. Richard wood was once again second
