Orihuela takes first step toward long awaited cycle-pedestrian Bridge over AP-7
After more than 20 years of delays, the Orihuela City Council has nally launched the tender process for a long-anticipated infrastructure project on the coast: a cycle-pedestrian walkway over the AP-7 motorway. This
project, one of the most requested by coastal residents, aims to eliminate the barrier created by the highway and provide a safe and e cient connection for both cyclists and pedestrians.
The tender now open is for the drafting of the technical project, marking the rst concrete step toward making the footbridge a reality. The City Council has allocated a budget of €86,300 (including VAT) for this phase, with a four-month timeframe for completion. Once the design is nalized, the next phase will involve putting the construction works out to tender, with approximately €1.3 million earmarked for building the bridge.
Urban Development Councilor Matías Ruiz explained that the primary goal is to create a safe and functional route that integrates with the existing municipal road network, particularly Creus Street and San Miguel Road.
The new infrastructure will feature a mixed-use layout, with a pedestrian path at least 1.8 meters wide and a two-way bike lane no less than 2.5 meters wide.
Infrastructure Councilor Víctor Valverde emphasized the importance of the project for local residents. “This is an important step in advancing the construction of the footbridge, which has been demanded by our coastal communities for many years. We’ve managed to unblock the roadblocks and are working to make this long-standing need a reality as soon as possible,” he said.
The cycle-pedestrian walkway is expected to signi cantly improve mobility and safety while reconnecting neighborhoods that have long been separated by the AP-7.
Union demands urgent action to fill Laboratory Technician vacancies at Torrevieja Hospital
The Comisiones Obreras (CCOO) union has raised the alarm over a critical shortage of senior laboratory technicians at Torrevieja Hospital, part of the Torrevieja health department. In a strongly worded statement, the union expressed “deep concern and dismay” over the Ministry of Health’s ongoing failure to fill these essential positions.
According to CCOO, the lack of qualified professionals is putting unsustainable pressure on existing staff and severely impacting patient care. The union warns that the shortage is already leading to a significant reduction in the number of laboratory tests conducted, both for hospital inpatients and through Primary Care services.
“This situation is creating unbearable pressure on the service,” the union said. “It
not only affects working conditions for the current professionals but also compromises the quality and efficiency of patient diagnostics and treatment.”
The CCOO has called on the Regional Ministry of Health to act immediately and prioritize the hiring of laboratory technicians across the health department. They emphasize that without swift intervention, the continued lack of staffing could further deteriorate service levels and delay necessary medical procedures for the local population.
This is not the first time staffing issues have been raised in the Torrevieja health department, but the union notes that the problem has now reached a critical point. They stress that ensuring full staffing in laboratory services is fundamental to the smooth
operation of hospitals and health centers.
The CCOO urges the administration to recognize the urgency of the situation and to implement immediate solutions that address both short- and long-term workforce needs.
“Healthcare professionals are being pushed beyond their limits,” the union added. “If the Regional Ministry does not act now, the consequences for public health in the region could be serious.”
Couple rrested for violent street robbery in Calpe
The Civil Guard has arrested a man from Torrevieja and a woman from Madrid for their alleged involvement in a violent robbery that occurred in the early hours of April 2 in the town of Calpe.
According to authorities, the incident took place on a central street in the municipality, where a young man was assaulted while returning home from work. The victim reported being followed for several minutes by the pair, who then attacked him using physical force and threats. The man reportedly grabbed the victim by the neck and demanded his belongings, warning, “Give me everything or I’ll stab you.”
The assailants made o with a mobile phone and a backpack containing personal items.
Following the victim’s complaint, the Civil Guard’s Investigation Department at the Calpe Main Post launched a detailed investigation. O cers retraced the victim’s route, analyzed security footage, and gathered witness
statements. Their e orts led to the identi cation of the suspects: a 32-year-old Colombian man residing in Torrevieja and a 35-yearold Spanish woman from Ciempozuelos, Madrid. At the time of the crime, the couple was staying in Calpe.
The suspects were arrested on the morning of April 8 in a park in central Calpe. Upon identi cation, investigators discovered that both individuals had extensive police records for similar o enses. Notably, the man had a recent record for attempted murder.
After being taken into custody, the pair appeared before the Dénia Investigative Court. The judge ordered their provisional release, subject to precautionary measures.
In light of the incident, the Civil Guard has issued safety advice to the public: remain alert to your surroundings, avoid displaying valuables in public, keep a safe distance from strangers acting suspiciously, and steer clear of isolated or poorly lit streets whenever possible.
Rojales police locate missing 7- year -old girl after two hour search
A 7-year-old girl who had gone missing in Rojales was successfully found by local police after an intense twohour search. The child, who has Down syndrome, was reported missing by her mother, who feared she had left their home unnoticed.
The mother alerted authorities after searching for over half an hour without success. Officers from the Rojales Local Police immediately responded and headed to the family residence. Upon arrival, they discovered a damaged section of the garden fence, which opened onto a large vegetable garden area spanning approximately five hectares. The location was particularly concerning due to its proximity to a sizable irrigation pond, which posed a serious danger to the child.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, officers, led by the commanding officer, initiated a coordinated search. Priority was given to the area around the pond due to the potential risk it presented. Simultaneously, the 112 CCE (Missing Minors Protocol) was activated, and a Civil Guard patrol joined the effort to
expand the search and ensure rapid coverage of the area.
After a tense and emotionally charged search, officers located the girl near the irrigation pond. Although she was a bit disoriented and had sustained minor bruises, she was otherwise unharmed. Medical services were immediately dispatched to assess and treat her on-site.
The child had been missing for approximately two hours before being found. Her parents were visibly relieved and expressed heartfelt thanks to the officers for their swift response and
professionalism. The officer in charge of the operation also praised the dedication of the entire team, saying, “The effort and determination of my colleagues ensured we didn’t have to mourn a tragedy today.”
The Rojales Local Police took the opportunity to remind the public of the importance of notifying authorities as early as possible in similar situations. “Time is critical in cases involving missing children. A prompt call can make all the difference and greatly assist our work,” the department emphasized.
Orihuela cathedral bell falls during Palm Sunday mass: No injuries reported
The Bishopric of Orihuela-Alicante has issued an official statement following a concerning incident involving the detachment of one of the historic bells in the tower of Orihuela Cathedral. The event occurred on April 13th, during the celebration of the Palm Sunday Eucharist, when the main bell, known as Santa María de Monserrat, unexpectedly fell from its axis.
According to the Diocese, the bell’s fall was caused by a mechanical failure in the axle bearings. “The failure of the axle bearings caused it to break at the sides that join the wall and implode, falling vertically into the bell chamber,” the statement reads. The bell in question is one of five housed within the cathedral’s iconic tower and one of the three that are regularly rung.
The bells of Orihuela Cathedral are under continuous monitoring and routine maintenance, carried out by a specialized bell-ringing company contracted by the church.
The Bishopric emphasized that regular inspections are carried out throughout the year to ensure the structural integrity and safety of the bell system.
In response to the incident, the Cathedral’s architect and the bell maintenance company were immediately consulted. Experts have already begun assessing the extent of the damage and outlining the necessary steps for
Fortunately, the Diocese has confirmed that the incident posed no danger to the public. “A section of the shafts that does not face the outside was broken, but in no case would this have posed a danger outside the bell chamber,” the statement clarified.
the bell’s restoration. The repair process will follow the guidelines established by the Valencian Government’s heritage preservation laws to ensure the historical and cultural integrity of the site is maintained.
The Diocese has expressed its commitment to restoring Santa María de Monserrat as quickly and safely as possible, while also reinforcing the structural integrity of the remaining bells. No injuries were reported, and religious services at the cathedral continue uninterrupted.
The Bishopric also expressed its gratitude for the swift response of maintenance professionals and the attention of worshippers who calmly continued the Palm Sunday celebration despite the unexpected event.

Torrevieja faces urgent need for schools as enrolement surges over 50%
Torrevieja is facing mounting pressure on its education system as student enrollment has surged by more than 50% since September 2019. The city, once known for its slower pace and modest growth, is now experiencing a population boom that has left its educational infrastructure struggling to keep up with demand.
According to recent gures released by the municipal government, the number of students enrolled in local schools has grown from approximately 10,000 in 2019 to 16,363 today. This sharp increase underscores the urgent need for new schools and the renovation of existing facilities, many of which are now operating beyond their intended capacity.
In response to the immediate demand, the city has relied on temporary measures. Currently, two primary schools, CEIP 14
and CEIP 15, along with a secondary school, IES 6 (Eras de la Sal), are functioning out of provisional structures. A third temporary primary school, CEIP 16, is set to open in September, continuing the city’s stopgap approach to education. While these temporary buildings provide a necessary shortterm solution, they are far from ideal for long-term use.
Several factors have contributed to this rapid growth in the school-aged population. The expansion of residential developments across Torrevieja has drawn thousands of new families to the area. In addition, the city has seen a signi cant in ux of Ukrainian refugees following the Russian invasion in 2022, which has further increased the number of children requiring schooling.
Despite the challenges, local o cials are actively working to address the crisis. Mayor Eduardo Dolón has
appealed to the Generalitat Valenciana for urgent support and presented a request for a long-term educational development plan. The city council has already identi ed and allocated land for future school construction, including plots in Sector 6 “Villa Amalia,” Sector La Hoya, and Sector 1 “La Ceñuela,” though the latter is facing complications due to ood risk.
Local authorities stress the need for immediate action and greater collaboration with the regional government. While land is available and the need is clear, concerns persist over the speed at which decisions are being made and funds are being allocated. As Torrevieja’s population continues to rise, meeting the educational needs of its youngest residents remains a top priority—one that demands urgent and coordinated investment.
Torrevieja bar sign demanding €50 minimum sparks debate during Holy Week
A seemingly simple bar sign in Torrevieja has gone viral and ignited widespread debate online during the height of Holy Week festivities. As residents and tourists ll the streets to observe religious processions and cultural traditions, a video posted by TikTok user @bimbablancocochiquitin has captured unexpected attention, highlighting a controversial policy at a local bar.
In the video, lmed while casually walking through the area, the user points out a notice placed on one of the bar’s terrace tables. The sign stated that customers must spend a minimum of 50 euros to be seated—a requirement that sparked immediate reactions across social media. Within hours, the video amassed thousands of views, with the public weighing in on what many saw as a clash between commercial interests and cultural observance.
Reactions have been sharply
divided. Some viewers defended the bar’s policy, suggesting that during crowded, high-demand periods like Holy Week, it makes sense for businesses to set minimum spending thresholds. Their argument is rooted in economics: during events where tables are occupied for long stretches, often with minimal consumption, restaurants and bars are forced to nd ways to protect their revenue.
Others, however, saw the policy as out of step with the solemnity of the occasion. Critics argued that the presence of tables and commercial signage so close to religious processions diminishes the reverence and ambiance of the celebration. One comment noted that the terrace seating felt “intrusive during the procession,” highlighting the tension between business and tradition.
Some online users suggested compromise—such as
treating terrace seating like a form of reserved viewing, similar to how balconies are often rented out for Semana Santa. Others called for bar owners to nd a more respectful middle ground that acknowledges the importance of the occasion while still operating pro tably.
This episode has underscored a broader conversation playing out in cities like Torrevieja, where the in ux of tourists and seasonal visitors continually shapes how local businesses operate. During high-pro le events like Holy Week, the balance between economic survival and cultural preservation becomes especially delicate.
As viral moments like this show, the question of how to navigate these dual needs— celebrating heritage while supporting commerce—is one that communities across Spain are increasingly being forced to confront.
Construction work on the new leisure area at the port of Torrevieja is on track to be finished before the end of the year. This optimistic announcement came during last weekend’s inauguration ceremony for a new parking lot, which marks the first step in enhancing the port’s facilities.
The newly opened parking lot serves as the initial phase of an ambitious project to transform the port area into the Paseo del Mar Leisure Center, a multi-functional hub designed for leisure and entertainment.
The project has been progressing steadily, with ongoing work aimed at building a variety of spaces that will contribute to a vibrant and modern waterfront destination.
The ceremony was attended by several local and regional dignitaries, underscoring the project’s importance for the community. Among the speakers were Mayor Eduardo Dolón and Vicente Martínez Mus, the Regional Minister of Environment, Infrastructure, and Territory of the Generalitat. Other notable
attendees included Enrique Riquelme, the concessionaire of the port’s leisure center, Luis Blanco, Director of Operations for Spain, and Christian Muñoz, the territorial delegate for Telpark’s Off Street operations.
The new parking facility is a key component of the overall project and has been developed after more than a year and a half of construction work.
It now offers 640 vehicle spaces, thoughtfully designed to accommodate the needs of the modern visitor. Eighteen of these spaces are equipped with electric vehicle chargers, with an additional two charging-enabled spots

added for convenience. Moreover, twenty of the parking spaces have been specifically reserved for people with reduced mobility, highlighting the project’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity.
With the completion of the parking lot, the port area is well on its way to becoming a celebrated destination for residents and tourists alike. As the final phases of construction proceed, the enhanced infrastructure at Torrevieja Port is poised to offer a revitalized urban space that balances leisure, mobility, and modern design.
Future location of regional waste treatment plant in Vega Baja remains unresolved
The location of the future regional waste treatment plant in Vega Baja remains uncertain, with multiple local groups calling for greater involvement in the decision-making process. The proposed facility, which aims to treat organic waste without relying on land lls, has sparked ongoing debate, as residents and environmental organizations push for their voices to be heard.
Several groups, including Friends of the Southern Alicante Wetlands (AHSA), Friends of the Sierra de Escalona (ASE), the San Miguel Arcángel Residents’ Association of San Miguel de Salinas, Ecologists in Action of the Valencian Country, Segura Transparente Vega Baja, and Vega Baja Limpia, have issued a joint statement demanding the convening of the citizen participation council of the Vega Baja Sustainable Consortium. These groups believe that public input should be
considered before any nal decision is made regarding the plant’s location.
A crucial meeting scheduled for April 4th, where the consortium’s plenary session was expected to vote on the plant’s location, ended with no decision, and no clear explanation was given for the delay. The groups have expressed frustration with the consortium’s failure to consult the citizen participation body, especially given that it was not even included on the meeting agenda. They are calling for a resolution on the location le and urging the consortium to take into account the position of the participation body, even though its recommendations are non-binding.
In addition, the groups criticized the consortium for its failure to convene meetings regularly, as stipulated by the Council’s Plenary Session, which requires bi-annual
gatherings. They lament the lack of political will to integrate citizen participation into key decisions, citing the adoption of the biowaste management master plan without consulting the council.
In other news, the Vega Baja Consortium recently announced the construction of its rst permanent ecopark in Almoradí, located in the Las Maromas industrial estate. This facility, with a budget of over €550,000, will serve as part of a network of 12 ecoparks planned for the region. The Almoradí ecopark, which will cover 2,500 square meters, is expected to be completed in three months and will support over 36,000 residents across several municipalities. It will accept more than 50 types of household waste, o ering residents an organized and e cient way to manage waste responsibly.

Dolores City Council donates over €4,000 to Phelan McDermid Syndrome
The Dolores City Council has made a generous donation of €4,189 to the Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Association. The funds were raised through ticket sales from the recent Intercultural Conference, and the donation was formally presented by Carmen Gil, the City Councilor for Social Services and Equality, to Manuel Llopis, a representative of the association.
Carmen Gil expressed her pride in supporting the cause, stating, “It has been an immense pleasure for us to contribute these funds to the crucial study of PhelanMcDermid Syndrome. This event represents our commitment to advancing research and supporting those who work tirelessly to improve the lives of those a ected by this condition.”
Manuel Llopis, who is also the father of a child with Phelan-McDermid Syndrome, thanked the city council for its generosity. “On behalf of the association, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude to Carmen Gil, the Departments of Equality and Environment, and Mayor Joaquín Hernández.
This signi cant donation, alongside the Ecoembes Recycling Award, brings the total contributions from the City Council to over €12,000 this year. The entire amount has already been deposited into the account for the research study we are conducting at the Gregorio Marañón Hospital in Madrid. This type of support is essential for advancing our e orts in the ght against Phelan-McDermid Syndrome.”
Llopis, who has spoken publicly about the challenges faced by families living with rare diseases, has also highlighted the lack of resources and delayed action from the regional government. His daughter su ers from PhelanMcDermid Syndrome, a rare
genetic disorder that leads to severe developmental and cognitive challenges.
Phelan-McDermid Syndrome is caused by a genetic mutation in the SHANK3 gene, a ecting the brain’s ability to function properly. Llopis described the disease as producing a cognitive pattern similar to Alzheimer’s, with a ected individuals constantly learning and forgetting skills, such as personal hygiene or speech, and needing constant care.
The donation from the Dolores City Council will continue to support vital research aimed at improving the quality of life for individuals living with this rare condition.
GBP
This week, US president Trump’s “Liberation Day” global tari announcements on Wednesday sent shockwaves through the market worldwide. Most major stock markets plunged with some citing that tari s of this nature haven’t been implemented in 100 years.
The UK has been hit with a 10% retaliatory tari – the minimum percentage that Trump has imposed on countries with an import/ export trade imbalance with the US.
Signi cant currency volatility has taken place, generally the lower level tari -hit countries have fared better than some with higher tari s. These would include many Asian countries with some seeing levies up to 50%.
As a result, GBP is seeing mixed reactions to its currency counterparts. For example, GBP/ AUD has jumped by up to 5 cents since the beginning of the week and now marks a fresh 9-year high on the pairing. Similar moves also happened against NZD and ZAR to name a few.
Separately, markets also continued to digest the impact of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ Spring Statement, with attention now shifting to how those changes will lter through the economy. Reeves’ announcements included signi cant cuts to the welfare budget, reiterated her promise to cut the administrative budgets of government departments, and committed to an extra £2.2bn towards defence spending over the next year.
Sterling is also reacting to last week’s in ation data after CPI came in lower than the 3.0% expected at 2.8%. With market expectations for year-end in ation now revised down from 3.7% to 3.2%, continued lower-than-expected in ation could act as a drag on sterling strength over the medium term if it impacts the forecasts for the Bank of England’s interest rate easing cycle.
EUR Europe has been hit with 20% retaliatory tari s from the US this week. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen has said “it was a major blow to the world economy and the consequences will be dire for millions of people”.
Despite concerns of how this will impact the already sluggish growth the bloc is experiencing, the single currency has generally faired quite well against most major currencies. EUR/USD has gained 3 cents this week which takes it to the best time to trade since September 2024.
In other news, the eurozone started the week with a positive surprise from Germany, when retail sales surged to 4.9%, beating the previous 3.3% reading. German preliminary Consumer Price Index (CPI) in ation data was released on Monday morning where CPI increased by 0.3% month-on-month.
Also on Monday morning, French far-right leader Marine Le Pen was found guilty of embezzling EU funds. Consequently, she has been given a ve-year ban on running for o ce, with immediate e ect, taking her out of the 2027 Presidential election race, causing some market volatility for the euro throughout the week.
Finally, on Tuesday, the annual CPI in ation rate ash estimate was released, showing a decrease to 2.2%, down from 2.3% in February, aligning with market expectations.

SMART FUNERAL PLANNING: Regulated Vs Unregulated
In uncertain times, guarantee your funeral plan is safe
Expats across Spain are considering a pre-paid Funeral Plan, and many are wondering how they can choose a reliable funeral plan provider.
While it’s not mandatory to buy a plan from a UK regulated provider, here are some important points to consider.
Since July 2022, any funeral plan provider which offers a plan with a UK funeral option, is legally required to be regulated in the UK, whether they operate in the UK, Spain, or
even Australia and regardless of where the funeral eventually takes place. For the customers of regulated plan providers, this means extra protection.
Extra Protection - NO Extra Cost
With a funeral plan from a UK regulated provider, not only do plan holders benefit from having a funeral plan which covers them in Spain and the UK, they also receive financial protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
You may have heard of the FSCS, it’s the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank ac-

counts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a regulated funeral plan provider’s failure, plan holders are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the market value at the time. The FSCS ensures that firms handle consumers’ money responsibly to deliver funeral services promised.
Trust Funds Are Not All the Same A trust fund on its own does NOT guarantee financial protection. Many providers, both regulated and unregulated, use trusts to hold funds invested by plan holders to eventually pay for funeral services.
Thankfully, UK regulated funeral plan providers MUST have their trust funds based in the UK and must hold at least 100% of the amount it would cost to deliver the funeral when it’s needed. On the other hand, unregulated funeral plan providers may not have a trust fund at
“Always
Look For This Symbol”
all, or they could have trust funds that are left exposed to abuse and financial mismanagement. For example, they may not hold enough money for the funerals in the future, and some unregulated providers have their trust funds established offshore in locations like Gibraltar.
You get assurance from a UK regulated provider that they are under strict financial control rules and critically for plan holders, under the protection of the FSCS.
Bigger For A Reason
In Spain, anyone can set themselves up and sell funeral plans. Recently, we’ve seen where that can lead. When it comes to choosing a funeral plan, look for a provider you can rely on to be operating not just next year, but for the next 20 years. Ask them how long they have been helping families and how
their money is managed. Ideally, you want a provider that has a dedicated team that you can trust will answer the call and be on hand to support your loved ones.
Ask These 3 Critical Questions:
How long they have been providing funeral plans?
Where is the trust fund administered? (some are based offshore)
Are they a regulated funeral plan provider? (look for the FSCS symbol)

“How can I prolong the battery life on my phone”?
To prolong battery life, whether for devices or rechargeable batteries, it’s all about adopting smart practices. Here are some key tips:
1. Initially charge to 100%.
2. After that, avoid overcharging: Once the battery reaches 80%, unplug it. Continuous charging can generate heat and stress the battery. Do not leave a battery charging overnight.
3. Keeping the charge between 20%-80% is ideal. Fully

discharging or overcharging can degrade the battery over time. Check your device’s settings to see if it has a setting to restrict charging to an upper limit. If available, it’s usually around 80%.
4. Avoid exposing batteries to extreme hot and cold temperatures. Charging in a hot environment is particularly harmful.
5. Use the Right Charger: Using certi ed chargers with the correct voltage for your battery type prevents damage and ensures e cient charging.
6. If you won’t be using a battery for a while, store it at around 50% charge in a cool, dry place.
7. On devices, adjust settings like brightness, GPS, and Wi-Fi to conserve battery and reduce the frequency of charges.

“Is IPTV legal”?
The legality of IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) depends on the service you are using. Legal IPTV services are those that have obtained the proper licensing and rights to distribute the content they o er. These services include legitimate streaming platforms and subscription services provided by cable and satellite companies. However, there are also illegal IPTV services that stream content without proper licenses, which violates copyright laws. Using or distributing such services can lead to legal consequences. It is important to ensure that the IPTV service you are using is legitimate and has the necessary permissions to distribute the content.

Rainy start to the week, but warmth returns midweek in Spain
This year’s Semana Santa was marked by unstable weather, with much of the Spanish mainland experiencing a mix of rain and overcast skies.
Last week saw countless processions braving umbrellas and downpours in cities such as Madrid. As the new week begins, the pattern of unsettled weather is expected to continue, with more showers and storms forecast. However, a change is on the horizon: Spain’s state meteorological agency, Aemet, has pinpointed the arrival of an anticyclone that will usher in drier conditions and a return of warmer temperatures.
Early Week: More Rain and Thunderstorms
A new frontal system is forecast to bring rain and storms to parts of the mainland on Monday and Tuesday. From Wednesday, however, high pressure from the Azores anticyclone will begin to dominate, gradually reducing precipitation across the country. Despite this, a new Atlantic front could still bring rain to northern and western regions such as Galicia.
Catalonia’s northern areas could see afternoon showers, while light rain is also expected in the north of the mountainous Canary Islands. Most of Spain will experience cloudy skies, with scattered light rain expanding from Galicia and the Cantabrian coast to the northwest and possibly reaching the southeast by day’s end.
Temperatures will start to climb across much of the mainland and the Balearic Islands, particularly in the southeast. Minimum temperatures will also rise, with little change expected in the Canary Islands.
Tuesday, April 22: Storms Continue in the Northeast
On Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms could intensify in northeastern regions near the Mediterranean. The northwest and Balearic Islands may also see localized storms.
Snowfall is possible in northern mountainous areas at elevations between 1,500 and 2,000 meters. Meanwhile, the Azores anticyclone will begin to break up the clouds in many other parts
of the Iberian Peninsula.
Maximum temperatures are expected to rise in the northwest quadrant and drop slightly in the northeast, with little variation elsewhere. Minimum temperatures will continue to rise, except in Galicia and coastal Cantabria.
From Wednesday: Anticyclone Brings Spring Warmth
By midweek, the anticyclone will firmly establish itself, bringing mostly dry and sunny weather to the mainland. Only the far north might still experience light rain.
Temperatures will rise significantly across the peninsula, especially in central and inland eastern regions. Highs could reach 20°C in the east and up to 25°C in southern cities like Córdoba, Cádiz, and Granada. In the north, temperatures will hover around 18°C. Minimum temperatures may dip slightly but will remain generally mild.
Spring is making its presence known—after a rainy start, Spain is set to enjoy warmer, sunnier days ahead.
Russian couple arrested in Mallorca for breeding and tra cking protected wild cat hybrids
Guardia Civil o cers on the Spanish island of Mallorca have arrested a Russian couple, aged 46 and 48, for their role in an international criminal network tra cking protected animal species. The pair, residents of the small town of Ariany, were found breeding wild African felines—speci cally servals and caracals—and crossbreeding them with domestic cats to create exotic hybrids. These hybrids, prized for their wild appearance and domesticated behavior, were then sold illegally on the black market, with some fetching prices as high as €60,000. One online ad even o ered a rare clouded leopard for that amount.
On April 8, authorities raided the couple’s rural property and discovered a caracal, two servals, and 16 hybrid cats at various stages of crossbreeding. None of the animals had legal documentation, and the couple lacked a breeder’s license. The animals were temporarily relocated to Son Servera Safari Zoo until they can be moved to the Prima Domus wildlife rescue center in Alicante, under the supervision of Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition (Miteco).
During the operation, agents also seized a large cache of documents and electronic devices, including 40 animal
passports from Russia, Belarus, and China, two computers, three phones, and two USB drives. Investigators are currently analyzing the data.
The Mallorca arrests form part of Operation Kotach, launched in Valencia in March 2024. Investigators have since uncovered a sprawling international network involving breeders, transporters, and complicit veterinarians. The network was smuggling protected species like white tigers, black leopards, and pumas—mostly sourced from Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine— into the European Union using fake documentation. Entry routes often passed through the Polish-Belarusian border.
In addition to the Russian couple, a third suspect—a 48-yearold man of Israeli origin—is under investigation. All three face charges including wildlife tra cking, smuggling, falsifying documents, and participation in a criminal organization.
Authorities were especially alarmed by the dangerous conditions in which these animals were bred. Despite being highly aggressive and unsuitable as pets, servals and caracals were forced to mate with domestic cats, often leading to fatal injuries. In many cases, these wild felines treated
the domestic cats as prey rather than partners, resulting in death or serious harm. O cers highlighted the high mortality rate among the hybrid o spring due to premature births and genetic complications.
“These are very aggressive species that require large spaces,” a Guardia Civil spokesperson warned. “Some buyers later realize they can’t handle the animals and abandon them, creating a broader public safety risk.”
Hybrid cats from rstgeneration pairings could sell for €18,000—more than double the price of a pure serval or caracal, which are already illegal to own without special permits.
CITES Protection and Legal Proceedings
All the animals involved are protected under the CITES convention, which regulates international trade in wild species. Even hybrids up to the fourth generation are protected under this agreement. The case has now been transferred to a court in Manacor for further proceedings.
Authorities are continuing their investigation and expect further arrests as they unravel the full scope of this illicit network.

A team of researchers led by the Hospital del Mar Research Institute in Barcelona has identified a key factor behind the high aggressiveness of pancreatic cancer. The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) in the United States, uncover a previously unknown role of the protein Galectin-1 inside fibroblasts— cells that surround and support the tumour— within the tumour microenvironment.
These fibroblasts form part of what is known as the stroma, a dense network of cells that helps pancreatic tumours grow and spread.
According to Pilar Navarro, coordinator of the research group at Hospital del Mar, the stroma acts as both a protector and promoter of cancer, shielding tumour cells from the effects of drugs while also encouraging their expansion. Fibroblasts, in particular,
secrete substances that favour tumour growth and metastasis.
While Galectin-1 had already been recognised as a protein secreted by fibroblasts with protumoural properties, the new study shows that it also plays a crucial role within the cell nucleus. There, it regulates gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms— meaning it influences which genes are turned on or off without altering the underlying DNA. One of the most significant genes affected is KRAS, a gene that is mutated in 90% of pancreatic cancer cases and plays a central role in driving the disease.
The research involved analysing tissue samples from pancreatic cancer patients and conducting in vitro experiments with human fibroblast cell lines. By inhibiting both Galectin-1 and the KRAS gene, the scientists demonstrated
Poppadum
the powerful influence of Galectin-1 in regulating key cellular functions from within the nucleus.
Judith Vinaixa, lead author of the study, emphasised the importance of these findings, noting that the presence of Galectin-1 in the nucleus significantly affects the expression of multiple genes that are vital for tumour progression. Gabriel Rabinovich, a collaborator from the CaixaResearch Institute and Argentina’s Ibyme-Conicet biomedical research centre, said the next step will be to explore drug therapies capable of targeting Galectin-1 both inside and outside the cell.
The discovery opens new pathways for treatment strategies against one of the deadliest forms of cancer, offering hope for more effective therapies that can overcome the protective barrier of the tumour microenvironment.
Nearly half of Spaniards targeted by cyber scams in the last year
Almost 50% of people in Spain have been victims of cyber scams or attempted fraud in the past year, according to a report released in October 2024 by the EAE Business School. Among the most common techniques used by cybercriminals is phishing—a strategy designed to steal con dential information or install malicious software (malware) on users’ devices.
Phishing scams often arrive in the form of mass emails that impersonate trusted entities such as companies, government agencies, or service providers. One of the latest targets has been Spanish telecom giant Movistar, which recently issued a public warning about fraudulent emails sent in its name. The company explained that these attacks are part of a broader wave of digital fraud that includes fake tax debts, tra c nes, or credit card charges.
“Warning! New phishing campaign detected impersonating Movistar,” the company stated on its o cial customer communication channels. “If you receive an email claiming you have unpaid bills, it may be an attempt to infect your device with malware. #DigitalSecurity.”
The warning was accompanied by a video that outlines how the scam operates. Victims typically receive a fake email claiming they owe a signi cant amount of money to Movistar.
When they attempt to view the supposed bill by clicking a link, they are taken to a page that encourages them to download a PDF. This le contains hidden malware designed to compromise their device.
Movistar has advised anyone who receives such emails to mark them as spam and delete them immediately.
For any doubts, the company recommends checking the o cial My Movistar portal, app, or reaching out via its veri ed customer service channels. If the attached PDF has already been downloaded and opened, users should run a malware scan with antivirus software and follow steps to clean their system.
The company also urged users never to enter personal data on suspicious websites and to share these warnings with friends and family.
Spain’s National Cybersecurity Institute (Incibe) also detailed the most common forms of phishing. These include scams impersonating banks to gain access to nancial details,
messages claiming to be from government agencies o ering tax refunds or requesting ne payments, and emails posing as private companies—often electricity providers, courier services, or supermarkets— designed to provoke emotional responses from victims.
There are often telltale signs that can help identify these scams. Messages usually come from unfamiliar or suspiciouslooking email addresses and are riddled with spelling or grammatical mistakes. They might ask for sensitive information, such as passwords or ID numbers—something legitimate companies would never do via email. Many messages also include malicious links or attachments and are often framed with a sense of urgency or threat, pressuring recipients to act immediately or risk negative consequences such as account suspension or legal trouble.
Authorities and cybersecurity experts continue to encourage the public to stay vigilant and think critically before responding to unsolicited messages—particularly those that request personal or nancial information.

It is sad that your father has little respect for your mum; her self esteem must be very low if she puts up with this behaviour. But, if she is not prepared to do anything about it, then there is little you can do. Some marriages aren’t perfect, but muddle on all the same. You may think your mother deserves better, but it is up to her to realise that, and you may need to be prepared for the fact that, she may never do so. Getting a better night’s sleep starts with building healthy habits and creating a sleep-friendly environment. First, establish a consistent sleep schedule by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. This helps regulate your body’s internal clock. Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night, depending on your individual needs.
Create a relaxing bedtime routine that signals to your body it’s time to wind down—this could include activities like reading, taking a warm bath, or practicing meditation. Avoid screens (phones, tablets, TVs) at least an hour before bed, as the blue light can interfere with melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep.
Keep your bedroom cool, quiet, and dark. Consider blackout curtains, white noise machines, or earplugs if needed. A comfortable mattress and supportive pillow also play a big role in sleep quality.

Spain enters the N era of number plates as vehicle registrations mark new milestone
Spain officially enters a new era in vehicle registration as the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) issues the first number plate beginning with the letter ‘N’ — 0000 NBB — on Monday, 14 April 2025. The plate is assigned to a Seat Ibiza registered in Castellón. Coincidentally, the last plate featuring the previous letter, ‘M’ — 9999 MZZ — is also assigned on the same day to another Seat Ibiza in the same city. Both vehicles belong to a leasing company.
The ‘M’ series began on 2 September 2022, with plate 0000 MBB, lasting over two and a half years. Based on current projections, the ‘N’ series will remain in circulation until at least 2027. Spain’s modern number plate format, which uses four numbers followed by three consonants
(excluding vowels, Ñ, and Q), was introduced in September 2000, replacing the provincial system that dated back to the early days of motorisation.
Since then, the speed at which letter series change has reflected the country’s economic rhythms. For example, the letter ‘H’ lingered for 47 months during the financial crisis, while the ‘L’ extended for 35 months amid the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on car sales.
Now, 10 letter series have been used since 2000, with another nine remaining before the current format is exhausted. The DGT estimates the system will last until 2053, considering Spain registers around 1.4 million vehicles annually (excluding mopeds and special vehicles).
Spain also leads globally in number plate production. The Girona-based company Samar’t manufactures plates for over 50 countries. A recent study by the company reveals that more than half of Spanish drivers would prefer to personalise their plates, a trend especially popular among younger people.
As the DGT looks to the future, it considers introducing electronic and personalised number plates, taking cues from other nations. Electronic plates could include a QR code or microchip with realtime vehicle data, while personalised options could allow custom words — for a premium, of course — as seen in countries like the U.S., Dubai, and Gibraltar.
Spain confirms no upper age limit for driving, but licence renewal fre uency increases after 5
Spain does not impose an upper age limit for driving, as confirmed by the DirectorateGeneral for Traffic (DGT) in its update published on 2 April 2025. The DGT emphasizes that driving eligibility is determined by the driver’s physical and mental abilities, not their age.
As long as a driver is deemed fit to drive, they can continue to hold a valid driving licence regardless of their age.
However, the DGT does make adjustments to the frequency of licence renewals as drivers age. For drivers under 65, a standard driving licence is valid for ten years. Once a driver reaches the age of 65, the renewal period is shortened to every five years. This change is based on the understanding that older drivers may experience changes in their health that could affect their ability to drive safely.
For professional drivers, such as those who hold licences for buses and trucks (categories C, C1, D, D1, and similar), the renewal period is shorter, set at three years, regardless of
the driver’s age. This ensures that those responsible for transporting goods and passengers undergo more frequent health checks, given the responsibilities their jobs entail.
The DGT has made it clear that there are no current plans to restrict elderly drivers or impose further changes to the renewal process based solely on age. All drivers, whether young or elderly, must pass the same medical examination when renewing their licences. This examination assesses a driver’s fitness to drive, considering factors like vision, hearing, and other health conditions. If the medical exam reveals a health issue that could potentially worsen over time, the DGT may decide to shorten the renewal period to ensure that the driver remains fit to drive.
Drivers over the age of 70 benefit from some additional perks. They are exempt from paying the standard fee for licence renewal, which can be a welcome relief for pensioners and other older individuals.
Moreover, those over 65 can visit any DGT office in their province without needing to book an appointment in advance. This flexibility makes it easier for elderly drivers to complete the renewal process at their convenience.
The renewal process itself involves attending an authorized driver examination centre, where the medical check and photograph will be taken. After the renewal process is complete, drivers will receive a provisional licence, which allows them to continue driving until the new permanent licence arrives by post. The new licence typically arrives within six weeks.
In conclusion, while Spain’s regulations don’t set an upper age limit for driving, the frequency of licence renewals increases after the age of 65. This is part of an approach that focuses on the ability of drivers, rather than their age, ensuring that all drivers, regardless of age, are fit to drive.

San Miguel Golf Society at Font de Lop
“Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore” said Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz –No Dorothy you’re in Font del Llop and that wind may well whip you off to Kansas if you aren’t careful…
Yes, as you can gather, we went north to Font del Llop Golf today and the wind was, to say the least, BRUTAL. The sun was shining – yes – but once you got out of your car at the car park, you just knew it wasn’t going to be pleasant – such a shame as the course was in pretty good shape –the fairways were lush and not too battered, as were the greens, although a little slow on pin approach. There was one frantic phone call “we might be late; we’ve missed our turning”… well we can all blame the SatNav for being a bit wonky at times. They made
it, I’m glad to say – you know who you are (Tommy, Martin & Nigel – not that I’d ever name names).
47 golfers today (inc. four guests). The highlight of our day was watching one of the maintenance staff with his leaf blower…..ehm, it’s really one of those, well I’m paid to do my job so I’ll do it, regardless of how futile it actually was.
The wind didn’t seem to deter some good scores, coming in as follows:
Gold: Jamie Smith (40 points and joint best score)
Silver: Roddy Duncan (34 points)
Bronze: Pat Dooley (40 points and joint best score)
Three “Twos” this week shared between Drew Niblock, Jamie Smith and Martin Clarke.
Nearest the Pins were Drew Niblock, David Stone (guest),
Steve Webb, Colin Dyke and Greame Millington. The best guest was David Stone with 28 winning on countback. Due to an admin error (one had come in a “different car” and one had brought a “different bag”) there was sadly no football card – Mickey Roscoe was particularly devastated as he normally finds some way of winning it. Paul Lambert “won” his inaugural “McBride Bottle” for the lowest score since being a Society member. Back south and more local again next week to Vistabella where we are hosting our own Prostate Cancer UK Charity Day (in advance of their own day on 17 May, again at Vistabella) – thanks to them for providing some lovely prizes (I shall advise of the winners next week).
Bowling gains popularity in Torrevieja thanks to Jarmo Peltonen s Efforts
Bowling, locally known as “bolos,” has become an increasingly popular sport in Torrevieja, a picturesque coastal town in Spain. What was once viewed as a simple pastime has now developed into a competitive community activity, with weekly local leagues and tournaments attracting growing participation.
A key figure in promoting bowling in Torrevieja is Finnish native Jarmo Peltonen. Born in Turku, Finland, in June 1954, Peltonen developed a passion for the sport in 1967. While bowling is a recognized sport in Finland, it is often seen as a recreational activity in Spain. Peltonen moved to the Alicante region in the early 1990s and settled in Torrevieja in 1995, primarily due to his children’s education. Upon his arrival, he quickly noticed the absence of organized bowling competitions and, along with his friend Pirjo Koski, founded the Euro Bowling Club in 2006. What began with just 25 members has now expanded to approximately 50 members from various nationalities, including Spain, Finland, Sweden, Norway, the UK, and more.
The Euro Bowling Club, operating under the Valencian Bowling Federation, has become a hub for bowling enthusiasts. Peltonen describes the club as a “Tower of Babel” due to the diverse range of languages spoken, with English and Spanish being the primary languages of communication during games.
The club consists of around 50 members from different countries, including Spain, Finland, Sweden, Norway, the
UK, France, Belgium, Germany, and Ireland. Despite bowling’s reputation as a casual activity, the club has fostered a competitive spirit, with members regularly engaging in leagues and tournaments. One of the ultimate goals for players is to achieve the coveted “strike,” where all ten pins are knocked down in a single roll.
A typical bowling game consists of ten frames, with players having two rolls in each frame unless they score a strike. Peltonen stresses the importance of concentration, saying, “At least half of this sport is about focus.” The final roll can be pivotal, as it offers a chance for extra shots based on the player’s previous performance. Players also wear special bowling shoes that protect the lanes and assist with balance during the game, contributing to improved performance.
For beginners, Peltonen recommends professional guidance and starting with two-handed throws to improve control and technique. While some may find bowling slow or difficult to grasp, many discover enjoyment in the camaraderie and friendly competition the sport fosters.
Looking ahead, Peltonen hopes to see bowling recognized as an Olympic sport. He regrets that bowling had to compete with rising sports like skateboarding and breakdancing during the final selection for the Paris Olympics but remains optimistic about its future. Peltonen’s efforts have significantly contributed to the growing popularity of bowling in Torrevieja, transforming it from a pastime into a vibrant community activity.
