After growing frustration from both residents and visitors, the Department of Orihuela Costa has initiated an emergency plan to tackle the severely deteriorated road network. Intense rainfall in March and April pushed the local infrastructure to a breaking point, leaving roads damaged, hazardous, and in urgent need of repair.
The condition of the roads had become dangerously poor,
with potholes, sinkholes, and crumbling surfaces making daily travel increasingly risky for both drivers and pedestrians. The worsening situation led the local council to declare a state of emergency and launch longoverdue intervention measures.
Local councillor Manuel Mestre confirmed the scale of the crisis, stating that the heavy rains in recent months had caused enormous damage, with some roads so deteriorated they posed serious dangers, leaving authorities no choice but to act swiftly.
Despite years of public complaints about the neglected roads, it was the recent
weather disaster that finally spurred officials into action. Emergency repairs began in late March and are expected to continue for about two months.
The project aims to restore widespread road damage,
improve safety conditions, and address chronic issues such as subsidence and neglect. In doing so, officials hope to restore mobility, safeguard public safety, and rebuild trust in infrastructure management after years of underinvestment.
Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious as work progresses. Many in the community see this long-awaited action as a hopeful turning point for Orihuela Costa’s future.
Quirónsalud Torrevieja to host Pancreatic Cancer Symposium
On May 8, Quirónsalud Torrevieja will bring together over 100 leading medical specialists for a major symposium dedicated to the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic cancer. The event marks a significant moment in the hospital’s ongoing efforts to advance cancer care, particularly in tackling what is widely regarded as one of oncology’s most challenging diseases.
Pancreatic cancer is notorious for its aggressive progression and for being difficult to detect in its early stages. Often developing without noticeable symptoms, it is frequently diagnosed late, when treatment options become more limited. However, when the disease is identified early and remains localized, surgery can offer a curative path. The symposium will explore this critical relationship between timing and
treatment, with a special focus on how emerging surgical technologies are transforming patient outcomes.
A central theme of the event will be the role of robotic surgery in managing pancreatic cancer. With the ability to deliver exceptional precision, robotic systems allow surgeons to perform complex procedures with enhanced visualization and minimal invasiveness. This approach has led to improved patient experiences, including reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times—factors that enable patients to begin followup treatments sooner.
The symposium will be led by Dr. Pedro Bretcha, Head of the General Surgery and Surgical Oncology Department at Quirónsalud Torrevieja. It forms part of a series of events celebrating
the hospital’s 25th anniversary and reinforces its reputation as a leader in medical innovation and excellence.
Quirónsalud maintains a strong presence in the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia, operating a network of advanced healthcare centers. It is recognized as a leading private healthcare provider, offering highquality care and a professional environment for medical staff. With over 180 medical facilities worldwide, including 57 hospitals and a workforce exceeding 50,000 professionals, Quirónsalud is deeply invested in education and research, with several of its hospitals affiliated with universities.
Through integrated healthcare services and continuous innovation, Quirónsalud ensures that cutting-edge medical science is translated into real-world treatments across its entire network.
Orihuela Costa residents oppose controversial housing plan over environmental and flooding concerns
Residents and environmental advocates in Orihuela Costa are uniting in strong opposition to a proposed change to the regional development plan for sector Y-1. The modification would reclassify land use on the U-8 plot, allowing for the construction of 33 townhouses instead of the originally planned 13 single-family homes. The proposal has sparked serious concerns over environmental degradation and increased flood risk in the area.
The plot in question spans approximately 6,529 square meters and is situated near the N-332 highway, close to the Consum shopping center and bordered by Wenceslao Fernández Flores and Juan Marsé streets in northern Campoamor. Environmental organizations such as Amigos de Sierra Escalona (ASE) and Amigos de los Humedales del Sur de Alicante (AHSA) have pointed out that the
area lies within a flood risk zone outlined in the Patricova plan, particularly near the lower stretches of the Nacimiento River.
Opponents of the development highlight the dangers of building in an area historically affected by flooding. They refer to the devastating storm in September 2019 that impacted the Vega Baja region, including parts of sector Y-1, and warn that future extreme weather events could lead to similar or worse outcomes. In their view, increasing housing density in this location is a shortsighted and potentially hazardous move.
Critics also argue that the development threatens the ecological balance of surrounding protected natural areas, such as the Sierra Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor. They warn that additional urbanization undermines regional efforts to curb coastal overdevelopment and poses risks to habitats connected to the Natura 2000 network.
Despite these concerns, Orihuela’s city council, led by urban planning councillor Matías Ruiz (PP), defends the project, asserting that the new housing is planned in areas deemed non-floodable by the Confederación Hidrográfica del Segura. Citing feasibility studies from 2022, Ruiz claims that runoff will not overwhelm local drainage systems and that flood risk within a 500-year return period has been accounted for.
Nonetheless, residents and environmental groups continue to call for the U-8 plot to be reclassified as non-buildable land with protected status. They envision an ecological corridor connecting the Sierra Escalona, Dehesa de Campoamor, and the coastal marine zone near Cabo Roig. As the debate continues, the community insists that future development must strike a balance between population needs and the preservation of Orihuela Costa’s vulnerable ecosystems.
Criminal gang dismantled for agricultural burglaries in Vega Baja
The Alicante Civil Guard has dismantled a criminal group operating in the Vega Baja del Segura region, responsible for a series of burglaries targeting agricultural farms. The investigation, conducted under Operation “Entrada25,” led to the arrest of one man and two others being placed under investigation. Authorities estimate that the value of the stolen goods exceeds €40,000, a portion of which has already been recovered and returned to the rightful owners.
The operation began in late 2024, after multiple complaints were filed about thefts on farms across the region. The Civil Guard’s ROCA Team from Torrevieja launched the investigation, which revealed that the criminals were breaking into agricultural facilities by forcing doors and
locks during off-hours.
Once inside, they stole valuable items such as fertilizers, compost, and phytosanitary products.
The success of the operation was made possible by extensive collaboration among law enforcement agencies.
The ROCA Team worked closely with SEPRONA in Guardamar del Segura, Civil Guard units from Guardamar and Callosa de Segura, and the Local Police from several municipalities, including Catral, Almoradí, Rafal, Cox-Granja de Rocamora, Algorfa, Benijófar, Formentera del Segura, Rojales, Benejúzar, Los Montesinos, and San Miguel de Salinas. Their coordinated efforts and analysis of collected evidence were crucial in identifying and locating the suspects, as well as uncovering some of the stolen property.
Throughout the investigation, officers carried out numerous inspections on suspicious properties, including farms, warehouses, and vehicles, which played a key role in clarifying the case. At the end of March, a 35-yearold man was arrested, while two others, aged 39 and 48, were also identified and are now under investigation. All three face charges of five counts of burglary and one count of belonging to a criminal organization.
The arrested individual was brought before the Orihuela Court of First Instance, which released him under precautionary measures. The Civil Guard has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling rural crime and continues to encourage public cooperation in reporting suspicious activity.
The Costa Blanca Provincial Tourism Board has introduced the 2025 Aid Plan aimed at boosting tourism in the Province of Alicante. The plan invites non-profit organizations to apply for grants to help promote tourism and contribute to the sector’s recovery. With increasing competition in the tourism market, destinations like the Costa Blanca must continue adapting to meet demand. The Administration is focused on supporting initiatives
that will solidify the region as a top destination.
The Aid Plan offers two distinct lines of funding, each with a budget of €350,000. Line 1 focuses on strengthening tourism activities, while Line 2 is dedicated to supporting local festivals throughout the Costa Blanca.
For Line 1, organizations can apply for up to €25,000 in aid, while for Line 2, the maximum grant is €12,000. The funding
Costa Blanca Tourism Board launches 2025 aid plan
will cover expenses for activities taking place between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2025. The official guidelines for the aid were published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Alicante (BOP) on April 23. Applications will be accepted for one month starting the day after the publication, with submissions processed through the electronic registry of the Costa Blanca Provincial Tourism Board.
Torrevieja to earn €1.4 million from new beach bar concessions
In a promising financial development for Torrevieja, the city is set to generate approximately €1.4 million over the next four years from newly awarded contracts for food and beverage operations on its beaches. Although the rollout missed the lucrative Easter season, the strong interest shown by bidders signals a thriving market for beach concessions.
The bidding process was structured around ten distinct lots, each corresponding to a beach bar location. Seven of these are situated along La Mata Beach, with one at Los Locos and two at Los Náufragos. Each lot carried a minimum annual fee of €8,060, forming the base for competitive offers from interested operators. Unlike other municipalities such as Orihuela, which applies varied pricing based on the commercial potential of each site, Torrevieja opted for a standardised starting fee across all lots.
Over the four-year concession term, the minimum expected income totals more than €322,000,
though actual earnings will be significantly higher due to the high-value bids received. The most lucrative offer came in at €444,000 for a lot on La Mata Beach, followed by several others exceeding €100,000, reflecting strong demand for prime beachfront locations.
Each concession must comply with strict operational guidelines. Beach bars are limited to a total of 70 square meters, including a 20-square meter service area, a 50-square meter terrace, and an additional 10-square
meter restroom module. In line with environmental standards, all structures must be dismantled after each beach season, which runs from March 15 to October 31.
The Local Government Board is expected to formalize the awards in upcoming sessions. With this initiative, Torrevieja aims to strengthen municipal revenues while enhancing the coastal experience for both residents and tourists— delivering a seasonal blend of business opportunity and public benefit.
DISCOVER THE VILLAJOYOSA COASTAL ROUTE
Located in the north of Alicante, on the outskirts of the pretty seaside town of Villajoyosa, you will find this impressive hiking trail. It begins at El Torres beach, passes through Racó de Conill cove, and ends at Torre d’Aguiló. The trail consists of spectacular sea views, hidden coves, natural landscapes, and some of the most picturesque picnic spots on the Costa Blanca. Beyond the beautiful views, this is a route steeped in history and cultural heritage. The origin of this trail can be traced back to the cattle ranchers who moved from the interior of the province in
search of a warmer climate and new pastures. In terms of cultural heritage, the Torre de Sant Jopsep (or Tower of Hercules), located in Playa del Torres, is a funerary monument from the Roman period, declared a Cultural Heritage site. The Aguiló Tower dates back to the 16th century and was part of the watchtower system to defend the coast from pirate attacks, also a Cultural Heritage site. What “language” are
financial
advisors speaking?
Peter Dougherty is a financial planner at BISSAN Wealth Management in Spain. He speaks English. But more importantly, he discusses financial terms in a way that clients understand.
As Dougherty says, “I’m one of a small handful of English-speakers who are certified in Spain as a European Financial Planner (EFP). One of the requirements to keep this certification is attending continuing education conferences. Yet, at every conference, I realize that 80% of what’s being discussed wouldn’t be understood by 80% of our clients.”
So, Mr. Dougherty explains financial jargon simply and avoids using technical terms his clients won’t understand.
Peter wrote “The Dougherty Code: Secrets of Financial Planning in Spain Revealed” to translate Spain’s financial landscape into plain English. The book has been widely praised by professional book reviewers for its clarity: “I liked the fact that even the technical aspects of financial management and planning are presented
in an accessible writing style to ensure all readers can easily understand the topic at hand.” –READERS’ FAVORITE
“Provides easy-tounderstand explanations of exactly what financial planning is and how it can be more accessible and transparent.” –IndieReader
Peter Dougherty also continues to increase his knowledge of cross border financial planning in Spain. He earned a master’s
degree in Spanish taxation (Máster en fiscalidad y tributación) from Nebrija University last year. And he works at BISSAN Wealth Management, where he is the only employee who is not a native Spanish-speaker. This was intentional on Mr. Dougherty’s part. Because he works together with local experts already in place, his clients receive the best financial planning advice available in Spain. Financial advice they understand.

SMART FUNERAL PLANNING: Regulated Vs Unregulated
In uncertain times, guarantee your funeral plan is safe
Expats across Spain are considering a pre-paid Funeral Plan, and many are wondering how they can choose a reliable funeral plan provider.
While it’s not mandatory to buy a plan from a UK regulated provider, here are some important points to consider.
Since July 2022, any funeral plan provider which offers a plan with a UK funeral option, is legally required to be regulated in the UK, whether they operate in the UK, Spain, or
even Australia and regardless of where the funeral eventually takes place. For the customers of regulated plan providers, this means extra protection.
Extra Protection - NO Extra Cost
With a funeral plan from a UK regulated provider, not only do plan holders benefit from having a funeral plan which covers them in Spain and the UK, they also receive financial protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
You may have heard of the FSCS, it’s the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank ac-
counts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a regulated funeral plan provider’s failure, plan holders are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the market value at the time. The FSCS ensures that firms handle consumers’ money responsibly to deliver funeral services promised.
Trust Funds Are Not All the Same A trust fund on its own does NOT guarantee financial protection. Many providers, both regulated and unregulated, use trusts to hold funds invested by plan holders to eventually pay for funeral services.
Thankfully, UK regulated funeral plan providers MUST have their trust funds based in the UK and must hold at least 100% of the amount it would cost to deliver the funeral when it’s needed. On the other hand, unregulated funeral plan providers may not have a trust fund at
“Always
Look For This Symbol”
all, or they could have trust funds that are left exposed to abuse and financial mismanagement. For example, they may not hold enough money for the funerals in the future, and some unregulated providers have their trust funds established offshore in locations like Gibraltar.
You get assurance from a UK regulated provider that they are under strict financial control rules and critically for plan holders, under the protection of the FSCS.
Bigger For A Reason
In Spain, anyone can set themselves up and sell funeral plans. Recently, we’ve seen where that can lead. When it comes to choosing a funeral plan, look for a provider you can rely on to be operating not just next year, but for the next 20 years. Ask them how long they have been helping families and how
their money is managed. Ideally, you want a provider that has a dedicated team that you can trust will answer the call and be on hand to support your loved ones.
Ask These 3 Critical Questions:
How long they have been providing funeral plans?
Where is the trust fund administered? (some are based offshore)
Are they a regulated funeral plan provider? (look for the FSCS symbol)

Cold front brings rain, hail and sharp drop in temperatures across Spain
The month of May has begun with a bout of unsettled weather across much of Spain, marked by persistent rain, thunderstorms, and a significant drop in temperatures. According to Spain’s national weather agency Aemet, this pattern of instability will continue through the week of 5–11 May, driven by the arrival of a polar air mass from northern Europe.
Over the past weekend, large areas of the country were placed under yellow and amber weather alerts due to intense rainfall and storms. The new week has brought more of the same, with a cold front moving in from the north expected to unleash further precipitation starting Monday. While Tuesday and Wednesday may bring a brief lull, the rain is forecast to return with intensity by Thursday, affecting
much of the mainland and the Balearic Islands. In some regions, hail and even snow are possible.
Aemet warns that the most affected areas early in the week will include Aragon and Catalonia, although Monday’s showers will be weaker than those seen at the weekend.
Heavier, more widespread rain is anticipated in the Cantabrian coastal region and northern Catalonia, with occasional downpours in the central and southern mountain ranges and even parts of the Canary Islands.
By Thursday, the weather is expected to worsen again, with heavy rainfall
likely across Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, and the Valencian Community. Aemet highlights that the most defining feature of the week will be the sharp and unusual fall in temperatures. As the polar air mass spreads across the country, frosts are forecast in several inland and northern provincial capitals. Minimum temperatures will dip as low as 5°C in many areas, particularly in the north and centre. Cities like León, Burgos, Soria, and Teruel could see temperatures near or just above 0°C, while some locations in Huesca and Lleida may even experience lows of -10°C. The southeast will be less affected, with milder lows of around 15°C.
Snowfall is also on the radar. Light snow is expected across northern mountain ranges, with the Pyrenees potentially receiving up to 5 cm between Monday and Tuesday. Frost is forecast in high-altitude areas such as the Central System and Sierra Nevada in Granada.
Despite the start of May, winter-like conditions remain firmly in place for much of Spain.
DIVAS Amateur theatre goup
DIVAS is a amateur theatre group located in and around the Hondón Valley. February saw the much awaited Pantomime “Jack and the Beanstalk”. At the two performances the audience was treated to a real spectacle of local talent, with amazing colourful costumes and great musical acts (with audience participation). As a result of the superb support, DIVAS was able
to give a donation of 200€ to Cruz Roja. Recently Pedro from Cruz Roja in Alicante, visited Hondón de los Frailes and met with a number of the Panto cast, crew and helpers. He thanked the Group for their support. Pamela Jubb – Director of the Pantomime – said “We wanted to convey our appreciation for all the hard work and dedication your organisation gives in times of disaster. DIVAS wanted to help in some small way to give back to the community in which we now live, love and call our home. “ Our photos show, Pedro and the DIVAS members as well as the finale photo from the Pantomime.

A silent disease: The early signs of Parkinson’s you shouldn’t ignore
Currently, over 10 million people worldwide are living with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects movement control. This condition, in which 10% of cases involve individuals under 50, is caused by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain’s “substantia nigra,” leading to motor symptoms such as resting tremor, muscle rigidity, slowness of movement, and postural instability. But Parkinson’s is more than a movement disorder—it also brings lesser-known symptoms like depression, sleep disturbances, and even cognitive decline.
We spoke with Dr. ErikaTorres, head of the Neurosciences Unit at Quirónsalud Torrevieja and Quirónsalud Alicante, to better understand the symptoms and the most effective treatments available for this condition.
Causes and Diagnosis
Although a single cause of Parkinson’s has not been identified, experts agree that it arises from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Certain genetic mutations are associated with the disease, but most cases are idiopathic or “sporadic.” Environmental risk factors may include exposure to pesticides, heavy metals, and, in some cases, viral infections.
“Unlike other neurological disorders, Parkinson’s combines both motor and non-motor symptoms that greatly affect patients’ quality of life,” explains Dr. Torres. “It’s a multifactorial disease involving both genetic predisposition and environmental triggers.”
Diagnosing Parkinson’s is relatively straightforward for movement disorder specialists. Most diagnoses are clinical and based on a thorough patient history and neurological examination.
“Early symptoms can be subtle and are often mistaken for normal aging,” Dr.
Torres points out. “Parkinson’s is usually diagnosed between ages 55 and 65, but early signs may appear sooner. These include loss of smell, persistent constipation, sleep disturbances, and slight motor asymmetry.” Such signs can precede more noticeable motor symptoms by several years.
Medication as Treatment
While there is no cure for Parkinson’s, various treatments can help patients maintain a good quality of life for many years. Drug therapy is the cornerstone of Parkinson’s management and includes medications that restore dopamine levels or enhance its effect and bioavailability:
• Levodopa and carbidopa: This is the foundational and most effective treatment. Levodopa converts to dopamine in the brain, while carbidopa prevents its breakdown outside the brain.
• Dopamine agonists: Such as pramipexole, ropinirole, and rotigotine, which stimulate dopamine receptors and enhance its effect in the brain.
• MAO-B inhibitors: These prevent the breakdown of dopamine in the brain.
• COMT inhibitors: These extend the effectiveness of levodopa by prolonging dopamine activity.
• Amantadine: Useful for controlling dyskinesias—uncontrolled movements caused by levodopa. As the disease progresses and both motor and non-motor fluctuations occur, medication regimens often need to be adjusted and combined. During “off ” periods—when medication effects wear off—rescue therapies (subcutaneous, sublingual, or inhaled) may be used. When standard medications no longer provide sufficient symptom control due to complications, secondline therapies may be considered, tailored to the patient’s age and
limiting symptoms. These include:
• Continuous infusion pumps, either subcutaneous (dopamine agonists and levodopa) or intraduodenal via PEG (levodopa gel)
• Deep brain stimulation (DBS): Surgical implantation of electrodes for neural modulation
• HIFU (High-Intensity
Focused Ultrasound): Non-invasive ultrasound that targets specific brain regions to relieve symptoms
“It’s crucial for neurologists to time these therapies appropriately,” says Dr. Torres. “Poor timing can lead to premature severe complications or an inadequate therapeutic response.”
Surgical Therapy When medications become less effective or cause severe fluctuations, surgical options may be considered for advanced cases. One such treatment is Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), where electrodes are implanted in targeted brain areas to modulate neural activity with electrical impulses, helping control motor symptoms.
“DBS can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the need for medication,” affirms Dr. Torres.
Beyond Surgery and Medication: Physiotherapy and Psychological Support Parkinson’s treatment doesn’t end with drugs or surgery. A comprehensive approach including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychological support is equally important to enhance patients’ day-today life.
“Physical therapy and regular exercise improve mobility, balance, and strength, while occupational therapy helps patients manage daily activities more efficiently,” says Dr. Torres. Speech therapy is also essential to manage voice and swallowing issues, especially in later stages. A balanced diet rich
in antioxidants, fiber, and carefully managed protein intake can further support physical well-being.
According to Dr. Torres, psychological and social support are also vital: “Depression and anxiety are very common in Parkinson’s and may even precede motor symptoms. Psychological care improves both mood and treatment adherence.”
Support for caregivers and families is also crucial, as the disease affects the entire social environment.
The Future of Parkinson’s in the Hands of Science
Although there is no cure yet, research is advancing rapidly to develop treatments that not only alleviate symptoms but modify the course of the disease. “We are closer to developing disease-modifying therapies. Several clinical trials are in advanced stages and could transform treatment in the coming years,” notes Dr. Torres.
Promising avenues include:
• Gene therapy: Introducing
genes to increase dopamine production in the brain
• Stem cell therapy: Implanting dopamine-producing neurons derived from stem cells • New drugs: Vaccines targeting alpha-synuclein, a toxic protein that accumulates in Parkinson’s, are under trial
