Torrevieja to undergo major revitalisation with €5 million boost for culture and tourism
Torrevieja is preparing for a major transformation following the announcement of a €5 million investment by Carlos Mazón, president of the Valencian Community. Despite protests from a small group of
demonstrators outside the town hall, Mazón con rmed that the funds will focus on restoring the historic Eras de la Sal complex to boost tourism, culture, and heritage preservation.
One of the key projects is the restoration of the Fábrica de Hielo, a 1920s-era ice factory. An initial €100,000 will be invested this year, with up to €2 million planned by 2027. Mazón emphasized that the restored building will serve as a major tourist attraction, featuring a modern tourist o ce, exhibition areas, and event spaces.
In addition, €3 million has been earmarked for the creation of a new Marine Museum within the Eras de la Sal initiative, with €200,000 already allocated to kickstart the project.
Mazón also announced €19.3 million for educational infrastructure, including the
construction of two new primary schools, a permanent building for Institute No. 6, and the full renovation of the La Laguna Institute.
Further investment includes a feasibility study for the
expansion of the CV-95 road connecting Orihuela and Torrevieja, estimated at €180 million, and a €100 million public-private redevelopment of Torrevieja’s port, which will feature a recreation center, parking areas, and restoration of the Muelle Mínguez.
While Mazón’s announcement was met with some public dissent, the projects aim to revitalize the city’s cultural, educational, and transport infrastructure, ensuring lasting bene ts for both residents and visitors.
Vega Baja hospital upgrades diagnostic services with new state-of-the-art endoscopy equipment
Vega Baja Hospital, part of the Orihuela Health Department, has formalized the acquisition of cutting-edge endoscopy equipment for the Endoscopy Unit of the Digestive Service.
The new equipment includes a complete tower with a trolley and 4K high-definition monitor, a high-definition image processor, a water and CO2 pump, a therapeutic video gastroscope for adults featuring high-definition chromoendoscopy technology, and a high-definition pediatric video colonoscope, also equipped with chromoendoscopy capabilities. The total investment for this advanced technology, which includes comprehensive preventive, corrective, technical, legal, and predictive maintenance, amounts to €188,275.
This upgrade significantly enhances the hospital’s diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities in digestive en-
doscopies. The introduction of high-definition imaging and chromoendoscopy will allow for greater precision in detecting digestive system lesions and pathologies, while also facilitating minimally invasive procedures for both adult and pediatric patients.
Additionally, Vega Baja Hospital has strengthened its Otorhinolaryngology Department with the acquisition of two new video endoscopy towers, including one with a touch-screen interface, at a cost of €115,763. These towers provide highly precise visual-
ization, improving the effectiveness and safety of ENT examinations. The touch-screen functionality further enhances usability, enabling more agile and efficient operation for healthcare professionals.
Through these investments, Vega Baja Hospital continues to modernize its technological resources across medical specialties, offering patients faster, more reliable, and more comfortable diagnoses, and providing its medical staff with advanced tools for clinical practice.
CHS removes 80 cubic metres of waste from Segura River mouth
The Segura River Basin Authority (CHS) has completed a major clean-up e ort at the mouth of the Segura River, removing 80 cubic meters (m³) of waste by January 31. The work was carried out using a combination of manual labor and machinery to clear the debris collected in the oating retention nets installed by the CHS.
The clean-up forms part of a broader maintenance program designed to preserve the health of the river environment. Alongside waste removal, the CHS team has been maintaining the retention systems to ensure their continued e ectiveness.
These e orts are part of a €361,263.55 investment (VAT included) directed at managing 17 control points along the Segura River and its tributaries.
Fourteen of these waste control locations are situated in the province of Alicante, with the remaining three located in the region of Murcia.
The collected waste is predominantly plant material, but a signi cant portion also consists of agricultural debris such as prunings and fruit, urban waste like plastics and other solids, and animal waste from both farm and domestic sources.
Despite ongoing clean-up
e orts, new waste continues to accumulate. After clearing the oating barriers, CHS crews were forced to return just days later to remove additional debris from the same areas, highlighting the persistent challenges in maintaining a clean river environment.
The CHS is appealing for greater cooperation from irrigation canal users, local administrations, and the general public within the Segura River Basin. They urge everyone to refrain from dumping urban, agricultural, or any form of waste into the river, canals, gullies, or other waterways. Proper waste disposal is essential to
preserving the health of the river ecosystem and protecting public water resources.
In their statement, the CHS emphasized the need for collective responsibility: “The cooperation of all those involved and a ected is crucial to prevent further waste accumulation in the Public Hydraulic Domain and the vital nursery areas of the river.”
Through these clean-up e orts and public awareness campaigns, the Segura River Basin Authority continues its commitment to environmental protection and the sustainable management of the region’s waterways.
Generalitat and Torrevieja council sign agreement to restore historic Ice factory for tourism
The President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Carlos Mazón, visited Torrevieja City Hall today to sign a memorandum of understanding with the City Council for the restoration of the city’s former Ice Factory. The historic building, recognized as an Asset of Urban Architectural Interest, will be remodeled to house the Tourist Offices and other municipal services.
Last week, the Torrevieja City Council approved the comprehensive project, which also includes the renovation of the adjacent site to create an integrated public space. The estimated budget for the works stands at €6.6 million, and according to local government spokesperson Federico Alarcón, the tender will be issued within the next few weeks.
The project plans to refurbish the ground floor as an exhibition area connected to the Museo del Mar complex, with a total area exceeding 600 square meters. In addition to offering a modern space for exhibitions, the building will accommodate the administrative offices
of the Department of Tourism and public customer service points.
Special attention will be paid to preserving the architectural heritage of the Ice Factory.
Restoration efforts will focus on maintaining and repairing the decorative elements of the building’s façade. The curved chamfer on the ground floor will be demolished, restoring the original appearance with the balcony above remaining intact.
President Mazón highlighted the Generalitat’s commitment to the project, announcing an initial investment of
€100,000 in 2025 to start the restoration and expansion works. Funding will increase over subsequent phases, with a total investment projected to reach two million euros between 2026 and 2027.
The renovation of the Ice Factory is a key component of the broader Torrevieja Salt Eras redevelopment initiative. This ambitious plan includes restoring the monumental Salt Eras complex, constructing a new Sea and Salt Museum, building the Habaneras Festival auditorium in the former Marina Internacional dry dock, and revitalizing the surrounding areas.
“Among Flamingos” new photographic book captures the secret life of Torrevieja’s flamingos
To mark International Book Day and the beginning of the amingo nesting season in Torrevieja for the sixth consecutive year, the University of Alicante Campus in Torrevieja, together with the Tourism and Culture Departments of Torrevieja City Council, has presented “Entre amencos” (Among Flamingos), a new photographic book published by the University of Alicante as part of its TerritoriUA collection.
The presentation took place near the birds’ natural habitat at the forest house in La Mata Natural Park. The event was attended by Rosario Martínez Chazarra, Councilor for Tourism; Antonio Quesada, Councilor for Culture; Jesús SegarraSaavedra, Director of the UA Headquarters in Torrevieja; and Federico Kenzelman, the photographer and author of the book.
Among Flamingos is an initiative by the UA Headquarters in Torrevieja that documents the quiet, often unnoticed nesting
life of amingos in the Torrevieja lagoon. Since 2020, these birds have returned annually to the Natural Park of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja to nest, a phenomenon largely hidden from public view. Kenzelman’s work o ers a rare, intimate glimpse into this natural spectacle, bridging the gap between viewers and the vibrant life of the park.
In his remarks, Kenzelman expressed his goal:“Through these images, I hope to re ect the majesty of the incredible natural heritage we have in Torrevieja, especially the remarkable colony of nesting birds.”
The book captures magical, eeting moments of wildlife within the protected natural environment of the lagoons, bringing to light the beauty and importance of this ecological treasure.
Among Flamingos is available for purchase through the University of Alicante’s Publications Service (link) and at bookstores including La Casa del Libro, 80 Mundos, and Séneca. It will also be made freely accessible online through the University of Alicante’s repository (RUA link) in the near future.
Prosecutor’s office recognises Miguel Hernández as a victim of Franco’s dictatorship in landmark case
In a signi cant development, the Prosecutor’s O ce has o cially recognized poet Miguel Hernández as a victim of the Franco dictatorship during a court proceeding. This recognition arises from an appeal against a ruling by a Cádiz court that convicted University of Alicante professor Juan Antonio Ríos Carratalá for allegedly violating the honor of Antonio Luis Baena Tocón, the judicial secretary involved in the court martial that sentenced Hernández to death in 1940.
Although Hernández’s death sentence was commuted to 30 years in prison later that year, he died in 1942 at the age of 31 from tuberculosis while imprisoned in Alicante.
The initial ruling by Cádiz’s Investigative Court No. 5, issued on March 7, 2025, found Ríos Carratalá guilty of “unlawful interference with the right to honor” of Baena Tocón, following a lawsuit led by Baena’s son. The court ordered the professor to “rectify inaccurate information,” “withdraw excessive statements” regarding Baena’s role, and
pay €10,000 in damages. However, the Provincial Prosecutor’s O ce of Cádiz, working with the specialized unit for human rights and democratic memory of the Attorney General’s O ce, has appealed the decision. They argue that the ruling infringes on the fundamental right to freedom of scienti c research and the right to historical truth, as enshrined in Spain’s current Law on Democratic Memory.
Historian Ríos Carratalá has also criticized the original judgment, noting that it was based on the now-repealed Historical Memory Law of 2007, rather than the updated legislation from 2022.
This case not only rea rms Miguel Hernández’s status as a symbol of those persecuted under Franco’s regime but also highlights the ongoing legal battles over historical memory and academic freedom in contemporary Spain.
The Alicante Provincial Fire Consortium has firmly denied claims made by the Personnel Board suggesting a decline in the quality of its emergency services. In a statement aimed at calming concerns, the provincial institution emphasized that no fire stations have been closed and that public service has remained uninterrupted at all times.
Consortium sources clarified that the emergency response system remains fully operational across the province. Even when a team is dispatched to handle an emergency, the corresponding fire station continues to function, thanks to a coordinated provincial system that enables the safe mobilization of resources from nearby stations when needed.
Addressing concerns over staffing, the Consortium categorically rejected the idea that it is operating below minimum required levels. On the contrary, they affirmed that staffing numbers meet—and even exceed—regional
standards. They also highlighted that personnel numbers were reinforced in 2019 across both main and auxiliary stations.
Reaffirming its commitment to social dialogue, the Consortium noted that negotiations with union representatives remain active, underscoring a “firm, loyal commitment to dialogue aimed at achieving lasting solutions that strengthen public service.”
Recent improvements have further bolstered the emergency services. These include the addition of 35 new firefighters in March, completing 100% of the intended workforce; the appointment of 51 new
Alicante fire consortium assures continued quality of service amid union criticism
sergeants and corporals in April to promote internal career advancement; and a €3.6 million investment to renew the vehicle fleet with ten new fire engines expected in 2025. Additionally, modernization projects are underway at key fire stations in Elda, Villena, Ibi, and San Vicente.
Finally, the Consortium publicly praised the dedication of its firefighting teams, particularly during highdemand periods such as Easter, and called for a spirit of responsibility, institutional respect, and shared commitment to maintaining high-quality public service across the province.
Torrevieja puts low emission zone project out to tender
Torrevieja City Council has o cially put out to tender the contract for the drafting and implementation of its new low-emission zone (LEZ). The project carries a budget of €87,200 (VAT included) and must be completed within a vemonth period. Funding for the initiative is provided through the European Union’s ‘NextGenerationEU’ Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.
The City Council was initially awarded €430,000 to nance the LEZ project, along with an additional €157,000 for complementary actions. However, to comply with the grant’s requirements, all work was originally required to be completed by June 30. Aware of the impracticality of this deadline, the council has formally requested an extension
until December 31.
The current tender outlines a structured timeline, acknowledging that with a ve-month execution period and the necessary time for the contracting committee to evaluate bids, the nalized project document would not be available until late September at the earliest.
The tender splits the work into three key phases:
Phase I: Public participation, with a maximum duration of one month.
Phase II: Submission of the draft implementation project, to be completed within four months.
Phase III: Final delivery of the complete LEZ project.
Phases I and II may be carried out simultaneously to expedite the process.
Additionally, the tender includes a strict penalty regime for delays or breaches of contract. Very serious infractions, such as exceeding deadlines by more than ve months, could incur nes of €1,500 to €3,000. Serious infractions, including a delay of more than three months overall or more than one month in Phase II, could result in nes between €801 and €1,500. Minor infractions, such as exceeding deadlines by up to 15 days or issues related to professional presentation or vehicle conditions, are subject to nes ranging from €200 to €800.
The LEZ project is part of Torrevieja’s broader e ort to align with European environmental policies aimed at reducing emissions and improving urban air quality.
VISIT THE ALBIR LIGHTHOUSE WITH IMPRESSIVE COASTAL VIEWS
This beautiful working lighthouse is situated in the Sierra Helada Natural Park, between Benidorm and Alta. Perched on a high rock with spectacular views overlooking the sea, this short walking route is ideal for all age groups to enjoy. The lighthouse was built in 1863, and the original approach to it was via a winding and often treacherous pathway close to the sea, only accessible by donkey or on foot. It used to be home to the person who looked after the original flame, which was oil powered. Today, the lighthouse is now reformed, automated and powered by renewable solar ener-
gy, and has been improved by a good tarmac access. It has an information centre serving as a small museum with old photographs and equipment from the early days, and is open every day from 9am to 2pm with free entrance. Parking and toilets are located at Camí Vell del Far, 39, 03581 l’Alfàs del Pi, Alicante. From here it is just under an hour’s walk, at a gentle pace to reach the lighthouse. The pathway is suitable for bicycles, pushchairs, wheelchairs, and for dog walking.

More than 6,000 new Guardia Civil and National Police for 2025
Spain’s government has o cially announced a public employment o er for 2025 that includes 3,118 new positions for the Guardia Civil and 2,914 for the National Police, according to two royal decrees published this April in the O cial State Gazette (BOE).
For the Guardia Civil, of the 3,118 total positions available for direct entry, 1,248 are reserved for professional military personnel with at least ve years of active service, while another 240 are set aside for students from the Colegio de Guardias Jóvenes. Any
un lled reserved positions will be added to the pool of open competitive places.
Regarding the National Police, the o er includes 150 vacancies at the executive scale (second category) and 2,764 at the basic scale (second category). Of these basic scale positions, 553 are speci cally reserved for military personnel who have completed at least ve years of service. As with the Guardia Civil, any unclaimed reserved places will be added to the general open competition quota.
The Ministry of the Interior
has also created a dedicated section on its o cial website where those interested can access information about the selection processes, application procedures, and o cial announcements related to these new opportunities.
This employment o er is part of the government’s ongoing commitment to strengthening Spain’s security forces and ensuring the renewal and reinforcement of national law enforcement agencies.
Last week brought notable macroeconomic developments, including the widely anticipated interest rate cut from the European Central Bank and the UK’s lower than expected CPI in ation data release which dropped to 2.6% from the previous month’s 2.8%.
This week’s focus for the UK shifted to Wednesday’s Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) data. The Flash Manufacturing PMI contracted as forecast to 44.0, while the Flash Services PMI fell below expectations to 48.9, indicating a downturn in both sectors.
For sterling, recent moves have largely been driven by external forces, particularly the respective strength and weakness of the euro and the dollar.
The pound remains somewhat of a passenger in global FX markets during the recent period of heightened geopolitical tension, such as the ongoing US-China trade dispute, especially after the UK lost its tari ‘edge’ over the European Union. As a result, domestic UK data seems to be playing a secondary role for now.
EUR The euro continues to bene t from both policy and sentiment shifts. The European Central Bank moved as expected last week, cutting rates from 2.5% to 2.25%.
The decision, while priced in by markets, still contributed to an extension of the euro’s
rally. EUR/USD climbed to its highest level in over three years, supported by both the ECB’s dovish tone and broader weakness in the US dollar.
Safe-haven ows have also played a role, with EUR/CHF hitting levels not seen since 2015 — a re ection of investor caution amid mounting global uncertainty and the shift away from the dollar as a traditional safe-haven currency.
On Wednesday morning, the Eurozone, German and French PMI data was released, revealing a widespread contraction and suggesting a cautious economic outlook for Europe. The Eurozone Flash Manufacturing PMI ticked up to 48.7, while the Flash Services PMI dropped below forecast to 49.7, indicating contraction in both sectors.
Germany’s Flash Manufacturing PMI declined to 48.0, and the Flash Services PMI fell below expectations to 48.8, showing a downturn in both sectors. And nally, France’s Flash Manufacturing PMI came in at 48.2, and the Flash Services PMI dropped to 46.8, re ecting a sharper contraction in the services sector.

EuroMillions warns of rising scam emails claiming fake lottery wins
Scams are on the rise, and fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their tactics, frequently impersonating trusted companies and institutions to steal personal information. Now, the EuroMillions lottery organization has issued a public warning about a new wave of fraudulent emails targeting unsuspecting individuals.
Over the past few months, there has been a noticeable increase in scam emails falsely informing recipients that they have won a prize in the EuroMillions lottery— one of Europe’s most popular and recognized lotteries. These messages are often convincing at rst glance, but they follow a typical pattern used by fraudsters.
The scam usually begins with an email congratulating the recipient on supposedly winning a million-euro prize. The email insists that the victim has been selected as a winner in a recent draw,

regardless of whether they have actually purchased a ticket. To claim the alleged prize, recipients are asked to provide sensitive personal information, including their full name, home address, and, in some cases, bank account details.
In a more aggressive variation of the scam, victims are asked to pay a small “fee” or “tax” upfront before they can receive their winnings. This tactic serves two purposes for the fraudsters: it immediately extracts money from the victims and also gives them the personal and nancial information needed to commit further theft or identity fraud.
EuroMillions o cials have been quick to clarify that these emails have no connection to the legitimate lottery organization. Through their o cial website, they urge anyone who receives such a message to delete it immediately and, if

As a crucial reminder, EuroMillions emphasizes the most obvious sign of a scam: it is impossible to win a lottery prize without having purchased a valid ticket. If you have not entered the draw, you cannot be a legitimate winner.
This latest scam serves as a stark reminder for everyone to stay vigilant against online fraud. Authorities advise never to share personal information or banking details with unknown sources and to verify any suspicious communications through o cial channels before taking any action.

Court orders Vueling to refund family for illegally charged cabin luggage fees
A court in Huesca has ruled against Spanish low-cost airline Vueling, ordering it to reimburse a family €315.36 after they were charged extra for carrying hand luggage that complied with the airline’s size requirements.
The family had purchased six tickets—three for adults and three for children—for a ight from Barcelona to Florence, paying around €1,000 in total. Of that amount, €315.36 was charged as a supplement for the Fly fare, which Vueling claims allows hand luggage to be taken into the cabin. Although the family’s suitcases t the standard overhead luggage racks, Vueling imposed additional charges, following a controversial practice common among budget airlines like Ryanair, easyJet, Norwegian, and Volotea.

their trip, the family contacted Spain’s consumer association Facua for assistance. Facua’s legal team led a formal complaint, arguing that Spain’s air navigation law clearly states that the carrier must transport passengers’ luggage, within weight and size limits, as part of the ticket price—without additional charges for hand baggage.
Vueling rejected the family’s request, responding with what Facua described as its “usual argument” for denying refunds. As a result, the association led a verbal lawsuit, which the court accepted for review.
The judge ruled in favor of the family, con rming that their cabin luggage met the airline’s permitted dimensions. Vueling was ordered to reimburse the €315.36, along with legal costs and interest
accrued since the family’s initial out-of-court claim.
Facua celebrated the decision, noting that this is the fourth court victory it has achieved recently against low-cost airlines for similar practices. In December 2024, a court in Cádiz ordered Ryanair to refund a customer for charging illegal luggage fees. In February 2025, a San Sebastián court issued a similar ruling against Vueling. Most recently, in April 2025, a Facua lawyer and her husband successfully recovered luggage charges through a lawsuit in Valladolid.
Facua continues to call on authorities to crack down on budget airlines that impose unjusti ed surcharges on hand luggage, stressing that the law is clear in protecting passengers’ rights against these practices.

Did you have a plan with them?
Are you concerned about how safe your funds are with your current provider?
The recent death of Iberian Funeral Plan owner Stephen George Nelson has sent shockwaves through the funeral plan industry in Spain and has left 1000s of plan holders in a quandary as to whether they have an enforceable plan or not.
ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT THE RECENT IBERIAN
FUNERAL PLAN SITUATION?
Where a clear succession plan of a sole owner of a company or sole director of an S.L company is not in place and/or clearly and transparently visible to all plan holders, such scenarios are bound to happen and sadly will be repeated again going forward.
It is essential then that if you hold a plan with any company that you do your own due diligence and find out exactly how and where your funds are held and what will happen to these funds should the company cease trading or, in the case of a sole owner, they die.
Thy Will Be Done promote a funeral plan that guarantees the following:
1. All funds are held with Amundi who have 2.2 Trillion€ under management through Sabadell Asset Management;
2. Just 2200€ for a direct to Cremation plan;
3.Up to 10 years interest free terms;
4.A tree planted for every plan taken out;
5. For full payers, a tree also planted on each plan anniversary for up to 14 years;
6. If plan holders who pay in full at the outset do not use their plan within 14 years, they will get a full refund, and their funeral will then be conducted free of charge whenever it is required
7.If you cancel your existing plan your current provider’s cancellation fee will be paid for you so you can then take one of these plans, which in most cases will mean a few 100€ left over for you to spend on whatever you want - maybe a weekend away?

SMART FUNERAL PLANNING: Regulated Vs Unregulated
In uncertain times, guarantee your funeral plan is safe
Expats across Spain are considering a pre-paid Funeral Plan, and many are wondering how they can choose a reliable funeral plan provider.
While it’s not mandatory to buy a plan from a UK regulated provider, here are some important points to consider.
Since July 2022, any funeral plan provider which offers a plan with a UK funeral option, is legally required to be regulated in the UK, whether they operate in the UK, Spain, or
even Australia and regardless of where the funeral eventually takes place. For the customers of regulated plan providers, this means extra protection.
Extra Protection - NO Extra Cost
With a funeral plan from a UK regulated provider, not only do plan holders benefit from having a funeral plan which covers them in Spain and the UK, they also receive financial protection from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS).
You may have heard of the FSCS, it’s the same scheme that safeguards all UK bank ac-

counts for up to £85,000. With FSCS protection, in the unlikely event of a regulated funeral plan provider’s failure, plan holders are guaranteed to receive either an equivalent funeral plan or financial compensation at the market value at the time. The FSCS ensures that firms handle consumers’ money responsibly to deliver funeral services promised.
Trust Funds Are Not All the Same A trust fund on its own does NOT guarantee financial protection. Many providers, both regulated and unregulated, use trusts to hold funds invested by plan holders to eventually pay for funeral services.
Thankfully, UK regulated funeral plan providers MUST have their trust funds based in the UK and must hold at least 100% of the amount it would cost to deliver the funeral when it’s needed. On the other hand, unregulated funeral plan providers may not have a trust fund at
“Always
Look For This Symbol”
all, or they could have trust funds that are left exposed to abuse and financial mismanagement. For example, they may not hold enough money for the funerals in the future, and some unregulated providers have their trust funds established offshore in locations like Gibraltar.
You get assurance from a UK regulated provider that they are under strict financial control rules and critically for plan holders, under the protection of the FSCS.
Bigger For A Reason
In Spain, anyone can set themselves up and sell funeral plans. Recently, we’ve seen where that can lead. When it comes to choosing a funeral plan, look for a provider you can rely on to be operating not just next year, but for the next 20 years. Ask them how long they have been helping families and how
their money is managed. Ideally, you want a provider that has a dedicated team that you can trust will answer the call and be on hand to support your loved ones.
Ask These 3 Critical Questions:
How long they have been providing funeral plans?
Where is the trust fund administered? (some are based offshore)
Are they a regulated funeral plan provider? (look for the FSCS symbol)

But, as the band joins forces with an old leader of the notorious team, humankind is on the verge of extinction. “What do the various Mouse Pointer shapes mean”?
The mouse pointer or Cursor changes depending on where it’s pointing and what the computer is doing.
• General Navigation: The default arrow-shaped pointer is used for general navigation and selecting elements.
• Clickable Items:

“Can I block or remove Ads from appearing on my Facebook page”? You cannot completely remove or block Ads, but you can reduce them. Here are a few methods:
1. Adjust Ad Preferences: Go to your Facebook settings and navigate to “Ad Preferences.” Here, you can manage the types of ads you see by removing interests or hiding ads from speci c advertisers.
2. Use an Ad Blocker: Install a browser extension like Adblock Plus or uBlock Origin. These tools can block Ads on Facebook when you’re browsing on a desktop.
3. Turn O Personalised Ads: In your Ad Preferences, you can disable
ads based on your online activity or personal information. This won’t eliminate ads but will make them less targeted.
4. Report Ads: If you nd certain ads intrusive, use the “Report Ad” feature to let Facebook know. Over time, this can help reduce similar ads.
5. Use Privacy-Focused Browsers: Browsers like Brave or Firefox have built-in ad-blocking features that can help reduce ads on Facebook. While these steps can minimise ads, it’s worth noting that Facebook relies on ad revenue, so eliminating ads may not be possible.
“How do I reduce noti cations on my Android Phone”? Open the Settings app. Tap on Noti cations.
You can see a list of installed applications under App noti cations. Tap on the ones you wish to modify. Toggle o Allow noti cations to stop receiving noti cations from that speci c app.

TM Grupo Inmobiliario reports strong 2024 performance with €256 million turnover
Torrevieja-based TM Grupo Inmobiliario has announced a strong performance for the 2024 nancial year, reporting a turnover of €256 million. The company, a leader in the residential tourism and real estate development sectors, continues to consolidate its position both in Spain and internationally.
Throughout 2024, TM Grupo Inmobiliario delivered 525 homes, marking a signi cant achievement in a competitive market. In addition, it invested €36 million in acquiring new strategic land along the Mediterranean coast, with new sites secured in Valencia, Benidorm, Marbella, and Mallorca. These acquisitions have further expanded the company’s already substantial land portfolio, which now exceeds one million square meters —
enough space to develop over 12,000 homes.
The company noted in a statement that these results re ect steady progress toward the goals outlined in its 2024-2027 strategic plan. This plan aims to surpass €1.1 billion in cumulative turnover by the end of the period, and the latest gures suggest TM Grupo Inmobiliario is well on track to meet this ambitious target.
Currently, the company has 22 active projects and approximately 1,600 homes under development.
TM Grupo Inmobiliario describes 2024 as one of the most signi cant years in its history, not only due to the volume of new residential projects but also because of its expansion into international markets, particularly in Mexico.
Another major milestone for the company this year is the completion of its new corporate headquarters in Torrevieja.
The new 7,000-squaremeter building, set to open this summer, will serve as a central hub for TM Grupo Inmobiliario’s operations and house around 200 professionals. The headquarters symbolizes the rm’s continued growth and commitment to innovation, providing modern facilities designed to support its expanding workforce and project portfolio.
With strong nancial results, major strategic investments, and an ambitious international outlook, TM Grupo Inmobiliario is poised for continued success in the coming years, reinforcing its status as a major player in the Mediterranean real estate market.
New anti-spam tool StopPublicidad launches to reinforce Robinson List Protections
Spam emails, unsolicited sales calls at odd hours, and irrelevant text messages have become a daily nuisance for many. As unwanted advertising continues to rise, users now have a new weapon to combat it: StopPublicidad, a private initiative that complements the longstanding Robinson List.
While both tools aim to reduce unwanted marketing, StopPublicidad introduces some important new features. According to Spain’s leading consumer association (OCU), one key di erence is that StopPublicidad includes a veri cation step to prevent your mobile number or email address from being added to marketing lists without your consent—a safeguard not o ered by the Robinson List.
Another standout feature is that StopPublicidad allows users to speci cally block advertising messages sent via WhatsApp and major social media platforms, including X, Facebook, LinkedIn,
TikTok, Instagram, Twitch, and Snapchat. This expanded coverage o ers users a more comprehensive shield against unsolicited communications.
Registering for StopPublicidad is straightforward. By visiting www.listastoppublicidad. com, users can validate an email address and then select the channels—such as telephone, postal address, email, and social media— from which they wish to block advertising. They can also specify sectors they either want or don’t want to hear from. Additionally, users can request a record of their registration history to support any future complaints against companies that disregard their opt-out requests.
Patience, however, is necessary. The system requires a minimum of 30 days from registration before the opt-out requests are fully processed by companies, particularly for communications on social media platforms.
StopPublicidad also o ers an option to revoke previously given consent to receive marketing from speci c companies, though users must obtain the companies’ contact details themselves. The OCU provides a model form to help individuals exercise their data protection rights.
Importantly, users do not need to choose between the Robinson List and StopPublicidad; registering for both is possible and even advisable to maximize protection. While these lists signi cantly reduce unwanted advertising, they are not foolproof. Companies with whom users have an existing relationship, or those acting against current advertising regulations, may still manage to reach consumers.
In any case, the arrival of StopPublicidad o ers a welcome new line of defense in the ongoing battle against intrusive marketing tactics.
Spain’s imports from China and US soar ahead of tariff uncertainty
Spain has recorded unprecedented levels of imports from China and the United States between January and February 2025, amid concerns about new tariffs under the Trump administration. According to a report released by the Ministry of Economy on 22 April, Spain imported goods worth €13.5 billion from the two countries combined — a 20% increase compared to the same period last year and 5% higher than in 2023, previously the record year for foreign trade.
Chief analyst Raúl Mínguez noted that while the figures are provisional and may fluctuate, the spike in imports from the US in particular suggests companies were stockpiling goods in anticipation of new trade barriers. Spanish exporters and importers reportedly accelerated their purchases to pre-
empt any tariff impacts.
Overall, Spain’s imports rose by 4.9% in the first two months of the year, surpassing the government’s earlier forecast of 3.5%. Purchases abroad reached €71.4 billion, the secondhighest figure of the past decade, despite a broader
economic slowdown.
China has now overtaken Germany as Spain’s leading foreign supplier, with imports jumping nearly 23% to €8 billion, accounting for 11.2% of Spain’s total imports. Whether China’s new position is temporary or permanent remains to be seen. However, the
European Union remains Spain’s largest trading partner, contributing 47% of total imports, despite a 2.5% drop compared to the same period in 2024.
Spain’s purchases from the United States also rose sharply, by over 13% to €5.4 billion, while exports to the US stagnated. This
widened Spain’s trade deficit with the US by 30%, reaching €2.6 billion. Mínguez explained that while exporters were willing to supply goods, US importers may have been reluctant to commit to large stockpiles in an unstable political climate.
Meanwhile, Spain’s overall trade deficit soared by 58.2%, reaching €9.6 billion — the secondhighest in a decade. The Ministry of Economy emphasized the resilience of exports to the US but acknowledged that the surge in Chinese imports significantly contributed to the deficit’s sharp rise.
This trend follows political tensions surrounding Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s diplomatic approach to China during Trump’s tariff offensive, further complicating the global trade landscape.

My husband died ...he was controlling and jealous but we muddled along, and I loved him even though he treated me badly... I was stupid and everyone told me I was a slave; he wouldn’t even let me watch what I wanted on the TV. When he died I was lost. Mike, our friend was wonderful, and looked after me when I couldn’t even begin to sort everything out afterwards. My husband kept such a tight hold on our finances and paperwork, I literally had no knowledge or control, or knew where to begin. Mike was there for me, taking me to solicitors and the bank. We grew close and now he has ideas about us being a proper couple. I like him a lot and now I think I owe him, because he helped me out. We started dating which I found sufficient; now he wants us to live together. We are in our early 70s, and I feel like I need my own space, in fact
I am enjoying it. What can I do? I do feel I should be more appreciative and perhaps agree but I get panicky about being controlled again.
Being honest with this nice man is crucial. There is no reason why you cannot have a close relationship with him; but if you do live together, it may be the end of your happy arrangement and Mike needs to know how you feel. You could explain to him that you need your own space; after losing your husband you have a lot of catching up to do. Tell him how stifling your marriage was, if he doesn’t know. You can offer to review things in a couple of years time, but for now you need to take stock on your future. Weekends away can be considered, if you both want to get closer, and you can both stay over at each other’s houses; perhaps this will suffice.

Can Vitamin D stop you from getting sick?
Taking vitamin D to ward off the common cold might not be as effective as once thought. A new analysis published in The Lancet found that vitamin D supplementation did not offer statistically significant protection against developing acute respiratory infections—the coughing, sneezing, and runny noses typical of a cold.
Vitamin D is the second most commonly used dietary supplement in the United States after multivitamins, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Many people rely on this fat-soluble nutrient, which is found in only a few foods but easily absorbed through sunlight, as a way to strengthen their immune system and prevent everyday illnesses.
There has been some scientific support for this belief. A 2021 meta-analysis by the same research team suggested that taking vita-
min D daily had a “modest protective effect” against respiratory infections.
In their latest study, researchers revisited the topic, expanding their review to include newer studies that have been published since.
“There’s lots of evidence that vitamin D influences the immune system, and many people have low vitamin D levels,” said study author Carlos A. Camargo, Jr., MD, a professor of epidemiology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in an interview with Health. Their key question, he explained, was: “Would giving a vitamin D supplement help?”
The findings suggest that while maintaining healthy vitamin D levels is important for overall health, supplementation alone may not be a reliable strategy for preventing common respiratory illnesses.

Beyond Eggs: 18 foods that pack more protein per serving
Eggs have long been celebrated as a quick, easy, and a ordable source of protein. A large egg contains about 6.3 grams of protein, meeting 13% of the Daily Value (DV) based on a 2,000-calorie diet. However, if you’re looking to increase your protein intake, many other foods o er even more protein per serving.
Protein is one of the most critical nutrients for overall health. It keeps your immune system strong, supports hormone production, and is essential for building and maintaining bones and muscles. High-protein diets can also enhance feelings of fullness, making it easier to manage weight.
The recommended Daily Value for protein is 50 grams per day, though your speci c needs vary depending on age, weight, activity level, and health status. Whether you’re seeking muscle growth, weight loss, or overall wellness, including a variety of protein-rich foods in your diet can help you meet your goals.
Here are 18 foods that o er more protein per serving than an egg:

How Much Protein
Do You Really Need?
The amount of protein you need depends on factors like body size, age, activity level, and health status. Generally:
Most adults should aim for at least 0.36 grams of protein per pound of body weight.
Older adults may need 0.45-0.55 grams per pound to prevent muscle loss.
Active individuals or those building muscle may need 0.5-0.8 grams per pound.
For example, a 180-pound adult would need about 65 grams of protein daily as a minimum. Those who are highly active might need more—up to 144 grams per day.
In some cases, like chronic kidney disease, protein needs may be lower to protect kidney function.

Motor insurance prices in Spain hit historic high
Motor insurance costs in Spain have surged once again, setting a new all-time high at the beginning of 2025. According to data from insurance comparison portal Kelisto.es, the average price of a car insurance policy rose by 14% during the rst quarter of 2025 compared to the nal quarter of 2024, and by 2.84% year-on-year compared to the rst quarter of 2024 — the previous record.
For the rst time ever, the average premium crossed the symbolic threshold of €1,000 in March 2025. The costliest jump was seen in fully comprehensive insurance without deductibles, which experienced a 19.63% rise compared to the previous quarter. While the annual increase was somewhat more moderate at 2.84%, it still marked a signi cant uptick.
Third-party insurance — typically the most basic and a ordable coverage — also recorded substantial growth, with a 12.58%
quarter-on-quarter increase. As a result, even the most economical third-party insurance policies now average €516.01 annually, a noticeable hike that re ects the overall upward trend.
Despite these sharp increases, Kelisto advised that the data should be viewed within a broader context. Spokesperson Javier Martínez noted that a similar pattern occurred at the start of 2024, when premiums initially rose before gradually declining throughout the year.
“The beginning of the year is always a time when insurance companies readjust their rates, leading to price hikes,” Martínez explained. “A slight increase at the start of 2025 was expected, but the scale of this surge has exceeded forecasts.”
Martínez emphasized that while price rises at the beginning of the year are typical, this year’s increase has been particularly aggressive, potentially
unsettling an insurance market that many had hoped would stabilize in the months ahead.
In hard gures, Spanish motorists are now paying an average of €27 more per year for their car insurance. Given that approximately 79% of households in Spain hold a motor insurance policy, this translates to an additional €395 million in costs nationwide — accrued just in the rst quarter of 2025.
Kelisto stressed that although the current gures break previous records, there remains a possibility that prices could stabilize or even decrease later in the year, depending on broader economic conditions and competitive pressure among insurers.
Still, for now, Spanish drivers are facing unprecedented insurance costs, adding to broader cost-of-living pressures already felt across many sectors.
Banned items in cars: what could
land ou a 0,000 fine in S ain
Many drivers in Spain keep various essentials in their cars, from jackets and toiletry bags to sunglasses, in case of unexpected needs. However, some items are prohibited by Spain’s Directorate-General of Tra c (DGT) and carrying them could result in hefty nes — in some cases, up to €30,000.
At routine tra c checkpoints, the Guardia Civil will typically check for a valid driving licence. If conducting breathalyser tests, o cers also ensure drivers remain within legal alcohol limits. However, they may also inspect vehicles for banned items that could compromise road safety or put passengers at risk.
Here are some objects banned by the DGT:
Speed camera detectors: Possession can lead to nes of €500 and a loss of 3 licence points.
Items that block visibility: Large dashboard decorations, dolls, misplaced stickers, or anything that impedes the driver’s view are prohibited.
Incorrectly secured cargo: Bicycles, skis, or luggage on roof racks must be properly fastened and marked if they extend beyond the vehicle’s dimensions.
Unrestrained animals:
Pets must be secured with a harness or transported in an approved carrier to prevent distractions or injury.
Hazardous substances: Flammable, explosive, or chemical products require special authorization to be transported legally.
Loose objects inside the car: Items like bottles, tools, or electronic devices must be secured, as they can cause serious injury in the event of sudden braking or an accident.
Firearms also come with strict transport rules. Even licensed gun owners must
carry rearms unloaded, separated from ammunition, and stored in a proper case, along with clear justi cation for their transportation.
While small knives (under 11 cm blade length) are generally allowed, carrying them without a legitimate reason can still attract penalties. More dangerous types, such as switchblades and combat knives, are strictly prohibited unless in speci c regulated circumstances.
Under Spain’s Ley de Seguridad Ciudadana, transporting prohibited items without just cause can lead to nes between €300 and €30,000, depending on the severity of the o ense

LOCKSMITHS
San Miguel Golf Society at Vistabella Golf
It was a charity sort of day today. We hosted our own Prostate Cancer UK charity event who very kindly donated some great prizes. We look forward to elding six teams with them at Vistabella on 17th May when they host their main Costa Blanca charity day. We also donated €340 to the local Pink Ladies (further details below).
And onto the golf – the weather was stunning setting o but by midday that naughty Vistabella wind blew itself into a frenzy and wound up the later tee players. 48 members joined us today for our fth Eclectic at this lovely course which was in great
condition, with speedy greens and yucky pin positions (yes, that’s a technical term – yucky!).
Some great scores, with a right royal battle for the top score between El Capitan and La Secretaria…with El Capitan winning the main prize of a Range Finder and Royal St. Andrews polo shirt on countback:
Gold: John Osborne (39 points)
Silver: Roddy Duncan (39 points)
Bronze: Lee Eastman (45 points – joint best score with Sandra Dibble)
Nearest the Pins this week were Darren Strugnell, Red McAuli e, Roddy Duncan x 2.
All received a sleeve of donated balls and polo-shirt. One “Two” with Jan Skog taking the whole pot (also receiving a sleeve of Prostate Cancer UK balls). The football card was won by Paul Lambert with West Brom and the “McBride Bottle” was received graciously by Cecilia Lager and also receiving a Prostate Cancer UK head cover. It was also lovely to see her husband and member, Johan, today who came for the presentation. All other winners received a sleeve of balls along with their cash prizes.
Well done to everybody else today and thank you again for all your kind contributions to the
Blob Tin which will be opened and the proceeds of which will be added to the €510 we have already raised for Prostate Cancer UK. I shall advise of the nal sum next week.
This week we also made a donation to the Pink Ladies (https://pink-ladies.org/) -
“Asociación Alicante para la lucha Contra el Cancer” (AACC) who help raise awareness of cancer and the support available both before and after diagnosis for ladies on the Orihuela Costa. We met and donated €340 to their Local President - María WIlson
