SENIOR LEADERSHIP

House Spirit In the past two weeks the House spirit at Cornerstone College has well and truly been on display at both the Middle School Swimming Carnival and the whole College Athletics Carnival.

Individuals and teams who demonstrate 'The True House Spirit' are the people that others look up to as leaders and role models.

The Athletics Carnival was the first day for 2022 that we have been able to be together as a whole community and we were blessed with amazing weather and treated to some fantastic sporting performances.

One of the inevitable questions at the end of the Athletics Carnival and Swimming Carnival is always ‘who won’ and I guess how you describe winning is what determines that answer. I think a quote from ‘anonymous’ best sums things up.

Whilst I love watching swimming and athletics as sports, what I most enjoy about these days at the College is the House spirit and camaraderie that is evident. Our students looked brilliant in their House coloured tops, with many adding face paint, coloured socks, costumes and other accessories to show their allegiances.

“In the end you will not be measured by wins and losses, but by the impact that you have on the lives of others, and that happens through the relationships that you invest in. When you focus on serving others and building relationships, success will ultimately find you.”

This along with the war-cry, the barracking, the chanting and the encouragement creates a brilliant atmosphere for the day.

Internship My name is Maddy Nyp, and I am the 2022 Ministry Intern at Cornerstone College. The Ministry team runs an internship program for graduated students to help develop skills and provide an opportunity for service. I graduated Cornerstone last year, and I am very excited to be back in this space for 2022.

Through this internship, I hope to both further my knowledge of Christianity and develop my abilities. I was raised in a Lutheran environment, however I have always been interested in interrogating my faith further ― I am an inquisitive person, and have a lot of big questions! Moreover, through this internship I hope to hone my writing abilities, especially through developing Chapels with Pastor Al and Chaplain Andy. At the moment, I have been writing devotions, helping with staff activities and filming videos. I look forward to continuing to develop my skills and faith further.

One of the main reasons I took up this internship was to serve.

As a Christian, I have always found service to be a cornerstone of my faith. Service is the ultimate expression of the Lutheran ethos, and one that I pray I will properly fulfil through this opportunity.

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh but through love serve one another.

WELLBEING

SPECIAL REPORT: Managing Overwhelm Due to the pandemic, recent world events in Ukraine and impacts of the floods in Queensland and NSW, the world we now live in is a very different place. The hyperconnected nature of our current environment means that we are constantly being reminded of the challenges we face via numerous media and social media channels.

Our connectivity to the digital world exposes us to a barrage of messages that can leave us feeling overwhelmed. As a result, many children and their parents/caregivers are reporting higher levels of stress and anxiety.

Unfortunately, our brains have not evolved fast enough to adapt to this digital landscape. The combination of constant access to information and having little control over the situations presented, can be stressful and overwhelming.

It is therefore important for adult carers to check in with their children and be aware of what information they may have been exposed to. It may not necessarily be the information itself that is harmful, but more their inability to process and make sense of it.

Providing children with the skills and strategies to cope will enable them to flourish and thrive, socially, emotionally and academically.

The blueprint for parenting, based on our own experiences, is no longer fit for purpose in raising kids as citizens of tomorrow.

This can be inherently stressful and overwhelming, not only for parents/caregivers and carers, but children alike.

If left untreated or unmanaged, constant stress and anxiety can lead to a number of behavioural issues or health consequences.

This Special Report suggests a number of strategies to help manage any feelings of overwhelm that you or your child may be experiencing.

VOLUNTEER AT CORNERSTONE Cornerstone Volunteer Opportunities Would you like to make a difference in our College community?

Do you have spare time on your hands?

We have a range of different volunteer opportunities that may interest you.

Second Hand Uniform Shop – open during College hours: Customer service, retail sales and consignment processing.

College Canteen (cibo bello) – servicing HILS (Hills Independent Lutheran Schools): Food preparation, customer service and cash handling.

PT&F (Parent, Teachers & Friends) committee members – an opportunity for you to share your voice and perspective with community fundraising projects and events. Meetings are held monthly on a Wednesday evening during the College term.

PT&F College events and fundraiser opportunities – we have numerous annual events throughout the year where volunteer support would be appreciated. Nominate for a specific event or advise your capacity and availability and we can provide potential options.

AROUND THE COLLEGE Parent-Teacher Interview Nights

These important nights are scheduled for the end of this term.

The College values this opportunity to connect with our families and to share the progress of your child/ren’s learning in their subjects.

Assessment information for your child’s learning is already available on Charis. Now that we are into the term and assessments have been undertaken and marked by teachers, there is increasing feedback for students and parents/ caregivers to view on Charis. Please log on to see the latest information.

Parent-Teacher interview nights will provide you with a chance to discuss your child/ren’s progress with their core or subject teacher/s and ask any questions about the feedback you have viewed on Charis.

Information regarding booking your appointments will be emailed to parents/caregivers in the week prior to interviews.

If you don’t find the email, please check that it is not in your junk email box. Please contact Jo Powell on 8393 6618 for assistance with PTO bookings.

For new families, interviews are booked using online software PTO. Each parent/caregiver of a student receives a login. Please only book appointments for separate carers if you plan to come separately to interviews.

To accommodate all the teaching staff, interviews are split between two large venues, Paideia (the Middle School building) and inbarendi. You can check where teachers are located and where possible make your bookings to reduce the movement you need to make between the two venues. Each teacher’s location is indicated on PTO.

HILS School Rebate Cornerstone College, in partnership with St Michael's, St Mark's and Lobethal Lutheran, is pleased to offer a rebate to families committing to a Lutheran educational investment in 2022 for multiple children across Hills Integrated Lutheran Schools (HILS).

The rebate is in addition to multiple child discounts and bursary arrangements that are in place at each school.

AROUND THE COLLEGE Battunga Focus Week Every year each House enjoys one week where they can spread House spirit and raise money for a great cause. This year we raised money for Australian Lutheran World Services (ALWS).

We were able to sell 2,400 frogs, which is 500 more than the existing record of 1,900! While we were not able to hold the traditional Friday festivities, students were still able to enjoy a non-uniform day.

Battunga Week kicked off with a blast, when we began selling our traditional Friendly Frogs from Melba’s. Goodwill was shared amongst students and staff.

Due to the record number of Friendly Frogs sold, we were able to raise approximately $3,000 for ALWS. Thank you to everyone who got involved!

Reconciliation Action Plan 2021 The 2021 Aboriginal and Reconciliation Focus Group continued to work on a new acknowledgement statement for the College signature block. This was part of our Reconciliation Action Plan.

An Acknowledgement of Country is an opportunity for anyone to show respect for Traditional Owners and the continuing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to Country.

Considering we are placed on Peramangk Country, we wanted to pay our respect through our College signature for emails and other communication.

Thank you to Ashleigh Butler-Bowdon, Celeste Charlesworth, Jayne Symons and Senior Leadership for their contemporary thinking around Reconciliation. We hope you all feel proud of this community effort.

Mount Barker Community Reconciliation Project 2022 The second session of planning for the Summit Sport and Reconciliation Park Artwork Project presented the students with the opportunity to work with traditional indigenous symbols that could potentially be incorporated into the final mural. Students learnt about symbols such as; a shelter, various implements, man, woman and animal tracks. They were then given the opportunity create a piece of artwork that represented their own stories using both traditional symbols and their own style. The students came up with some stunning pieces and some really interesting ways of telling their story. Some of these designs will be used in the final mural at the Summit Sports and Recreation Park. We would like to again thank David Booth for taking the time to share his knowledge and stories with us.

Middle School Swimming Carnival The annual Middle School Inter-House Swimming Carnival was held at the Mount Barker Mountain Pool on Tuesday, 1 March. The weather was superb and there were lots of keen participants. The day started with competitive races and then a scrumptious sausage sizzle was consumed. In the afternoon, students participated within age groups in a range of activities – volleyball on the lawn, novelty events in the pool and free swimming.

Outdoor Experience with Scott Darlow On Wednesday, 2 March songwriter and musician Scott Darlow performed underneath the gums at Purtinga Wetlands & Environmental Centre for Year 8 students. The session focused on Aboriginal culture including the Yidaki and its role in song writing and storytelling. We thank Scott for his engaging performance and musicality!

SPORT Open Cricket On Monday, 7 March the Open Cricket team travelled down to Unity College for Round 1. Captain Riley Harten lost the toss and we went into the field. Unity started well, aided by some poor catching by the Cornerstone students. At the 20 over mark, Unity had reached 1 for 76 with the lone wicket going to Hayden Knappstein. After drinks however it was all Cornerstone with Shannon Cox leading the charge with the ball to bowl out Unity for 123. Shannon was best with the ball taking 4 for 15 off his 8 overs. Oscar Chapman and Hayden Knappstein were also very steady with the ball and Flynn Samardzic took catch of the day.

With the bat we started slowly with Max Chapman getting an unplayable ball first ball of the innings to have his off stump disturbed.

From there Torsten Skinner and Hayden Knappstein went about facing some very impressive fast bowling from the Unity openers, one of which who has been playing A Grade District.

At drinks we had recovered from our shaky start to reach 2 for 53. Needing 71 off our remaining 20 we were confident we could get the job done. Unfortunately some poor shot selection and questionable running between the wickets meant we fell 22 runs short. Hayden Knappstein was best with the bat with 49.
