Welcome Back

What an amazing start it has been this year!

There has been excitement with new students and new staff beginning their journey at Cornerstone. It has been wonderful to welcome parents/caregivers at our information evenings, at our Middle School Swimming Carnival and at our inaugural ‘Karneval’ last Friday. Our partnership with parents/ caregivers is important and valued. We know a healthy partnership with parents makes a significant contribution to young people thriving in their learning.

Generation Alpha

I am a part of generation X or ‘gen X’ as I was born between 1965-1979. What generation are you?

One of the iconic toys I had when I was in primary school was a Rubiks cube. The fastest time I solved the cube was 1 ½ minutes. I was the fastest in my class but this time would be considered slow compared to modern speeds. I listened to music on my ‘walkman’ when I was in secondary school, and when I started my teaching career, one of my favourite things to do on a weekend was to hire a video and watch a movie at home on my VCR.

What generation are our students? A significant portion of our current students align with generation Z (born 2009 or prior) and a rapidly growing number of our students fall into the latest generation know as generation alpha.

More than 2.5 million people are born globally every week. Generation alpha are defined as those born from 2010-2024. When gen alpha have all been born by 2025, they will number almost 2 billion − the largest generation in the history of the world.

What iconic things have influenced generation alpha? Perhaps it is the fidget spinner craze in primary school? Maybe it is the bluetooth or smart speaker they use to listen to their music?

Some key characteristics of gen alpha is they are global citizens and have always been surrounded by digital technology. Social media will

be an influential platform for how they connect. Gen alpha is considered to be a highly mobile generation, given their ready access to transport, and much of the content they engage with is highly visual.

Technology has a significant impact on each generation. Recent technology includes airpods, high speed 5G mobile connections, biometric tech like touch ID or face ID, and cars becoming more autonomous. Looking ahead, it appears aerial ridesharing is just around the corner. What I find even more interesting is to look at the outgoing technology, that is, things we are no longer need, like credit cards and wallets.

I find it fascinating to look at the things that have a significant influence on shaping us as people. A part of our mission at Cornerstone College is to promote individual excellence, learning and responsibility for life. I see tremendous opportunity for each and every student, to thrive in their learning at Cornerstone.

One of our key influences at Cornerstone, is the unconditional love and grace of God. Our College uniform displays our motto − Christ our firm foundation. Love, grace and hope can be a significant influence in our lives, with the potential to transform our connections with each other, and our connections as a community.

May God bless each of our students this year, as they grow and develop their God-given skills and abilities at Cornerstone in 2023.

“I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10b)

The concept of flourishing, in human terms, is when our bodies, our souls, our minds and our hearts are nurtured and cultivated into a healthier state of being. We grow and become, we thrive and we flourish.

The question, of course – what is it that leads to human flourishing – what do we consider to be the key elements required to drive human flourishing?

In psychology terms, the work of Martin Seligman has been foundational in this space, having established a framework for flourishing that has been adopted by organisations all around the world, including schools. In short, Seligman uses the acronym PERMA to summarise the 5 pillars required for human flourishing, including positivity, engagement, relationships, meaning and accomplishments.

In spiritual terms, however, there are some important nuances to consider, in order to establish a faith-based framework for flourishing. When Jesus says he brings a full life, a complete life, an abundant life, he is offering some things that psychology might have missed. At Cornerstone in 2023, as we embrace our spiritual theme of ‘Flourish’ for the year, we do so through a nuanced framework that is driven by 5 key spiritual pillars.

Our pillars, cheekily tagged FIRMA (based on our motto ‘Christ our Firm Foundation’) represent a foundation for further dialogue in this space, but also serve as a great starting point for how we unpack the concept of human flourishing for our community.

The FIRMA 5 includes being GRACE-CONSCIOUS, CROSS-CENTRED, SPIRIT-INSPIRED, RELATIONSHIP-FOCUSED and SERVANTHEARTED, each of which is founded and grounded in Scripture, and each of which considers life through the lens of faith in Christ. We are excited for the richness of this framework and have developed icons for each of the pillars (as seen above), in the hope that such visual support will enhance teaching and learning in matters relating to our spiritual theme.

May our Cornerstone community embrace Jesus’ own call to a flourishing life to all who hear his voice.

Prayer Points

• For the new year and a new opportunity to love, learn and grow

• For our spiritual theme and its impact for the spiritual life of the College

• For all suffering following the devastating effects of the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey

3 Term 1 ― February 2023 MINISTRY MATTERS

What does learning look like at Cornerstone College?

Learning is a continuous process that never ends, and schools play an integral role in providing the foundation for lifelong learning. At Cornerstone, students acquire knowledge, skills, and values that are necessary to lead a successful life. The learning experience at school is not just limited to textbooks but also includes extracurricular activities that provide exposure to diverse cultures, art, and sports.

In today's world, learning has taken a new dimension with the introduction of technology in education. Digital resources have made learning accessible to all, breaking down barriers to education.

At Cornerstone College, learning is not just about memorizing facts but also about developing dispositions such as critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and creativity. Students are encouraged to think independently, ask questions, and explore their curiosity. By fostering a love for learning, schools prepare students for success in their future endeavours.

4 Term 1 ― February 2023 LEARNING DIRECTOR

Special Report: The Wellbeing Barometer 2023

Because parenting doesn’t come with instructions, SchoolTV is a wellbeing resource implemented at our school to help support you in the challenges of modern-day parenting. Parenting is a learning journey and it’s easy to feel stressed and overwhelmed when faced with raising happy, well and resilient young people today.

Every family has experienced some sort of difficulty or adversity in recent times, some more than others. As mental health concerns continue to rise, there have been some alarming statistics reported in relation to the mental health and wellbeing of young people. Unfortunately, the blueprint for parenting is often based on our own experiences, but this is no longer fit for purpose in raising children as citizens of tomorrow. Parents and caregivers play a vital role in providing the guidance needed to support children and adolescents as they reframe their worries and focus more on the things they can control in their life.

In this Special Report, we are seeking parent participation through a short survey. The survey is designed to provide a barometer to help gauge the state of student wellbeing within our community. We encourage you to take a few moments to complete the survey as this will help our school know the nature and extent of your concerns and determine how best we can support families in the months ahead. Responses remain anonymous and will only be reported on an aggregated basis. You are asked to base your responses on observations made in the last 12 months.

By working together we can continue to build relationships, foster connections, enable understanding and break down barriers as we navigate a pathway towards better mental health and wellbeing for all students. Please reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback. If this raises any concerns for you or your child, please reach out to the school or seek professional medical advice.

Here is the link to your special report https://cornerstone.sa.schooltv.me/wellbeing_news/special-report-wellbeing-barometer-2023-au

If you have concerns regarding your child’s wellbeing and would like counselling support, please contact us at the College on 8398 6000 or email us at sbaxter@cornerstone.sa.edu.au

Sherry Baxter Lead Counsellor Joanna Burdorf Counsellor

Sometimes it’s hard to fit in, and we know this is a particular challenge for teenagers.

Being ‘cool’ can seem like the opposite of being lonely, and therefore something to strive for. There is no doubt that we all want to belong somewhere.

Dr Brené Brown has a lot to say about belonging. She defines it as “being part of something bigger but also having the courage to stand alone, and to belong to yourself above all else.” That being said, it seems belonging is actually the opposite of fitting in!

When thinking about our young people at Cornerstone, we don’t want them changing themselves to be like others so that they fit in. That would mean betraying themselves and who they are; precious children of God, who are wonderful and loved for exactly who they are, not chameleons (although they are pretty ‘cool’).

Becoming secure in who you are is difficult for anyone, but kids have it especially hard as they learn to navigate this complex world, which is imposing many conflicting messages on them. At Cornerstone, we believe a good place to start is to provide safe spaces, through connection with teachers and each other, for young people to share and be vulnerable. This allows our community to have, and show love, grace, empathy, resilience and to bring belonging.

Speaking of belonging, please ensure your child/ren’s belongings are all named and labelled. Throughout the year, Student Reception accumulates a large amount of lost property, much of which is never returned. We also need to know where all of our students are in the morning, so please alert the College if your child will not be in Home Group by 8:45am.

6 Term 1 ― February 2023 WELLBEING

Karneval - A Resounding Success

The inaugural Karneval was held at the College last Friday, 17 February to a crowd of over 2,000 families and couples from the Hills community.

The weather was perfect, and there was just the right mix of good food, activities for all ages, and entertainment that the whole family could enjoy.

Entertainment included Adelaide Fringe performers, 360 All Stars, who on their opening night of the Adelaide Fringe brought high energy, action and acrobatics to inbarendi and lived up to their reputation as quality performers of a world calibre status.

Our very own old scholars and talented local performers Ella & Sienna featured on the main stage with a selection of original songs and Taylor Swift greats, and the soulful tones of Zac Eichner filled the evening with powerful ballads.

Karneval is Cornerstone’s new annual event and was made possible by the valued partnerships we have within our community. We are grateful to Adelaide Hills Farmers Market who featured over twenty stalls in a twilight market and the Science Collective’s, SciFi Bri who entertained kids of all ages with the interactive and highly entertaining science show ‘Fire & Froth’.

The event also featured carnival rides including the fast paced Sizzler, the Tea Cup ride, and the Safari Train plus our community partners Mt Barker Little Athletics, Sturt Football Club, and Adelaide Hills Hockey Club and Cornerstone College partners Beyond Bank, Duttons, and HILS (Hills Integrated Lutheran Schools). The evening was action packed and definitely one to add to your calendar for next year!

2022 Governor's Civics Awards for Schools Ceremony

On Friday, 17 February a small group of students including myself headed to Government House to meet with Her Excellency, The Honourable Frances Adamson to receive The Governor's Civics Award for Schools on behalf of the Community Reconciliation Mural Project student group.

The day began with the group heading into the beautiful grounds of Government House. Her Excellency started the morning with a speech about the importance of Civics particularly in school communities. This speech was followed with the awards ceremony, divided into the categories of individual awards, SACE awards and small group awards.

The Governor's Civics Awards for Schools provides an opportunity for students to increase their skills, understanding and awareness of living in a multicultural, democratic society. Cornerstone College was presented this award for the work done by a group of students in April 2022. The students who showed an interest in reconciliation were given the opportunity to work with Peramangk representative and artist David Booth to design and paint a mural at the Summit Sports Park. The mural allowed the community to reflect on and start the conversation about reconciliation.

Jesse Filmer (Year 10), Eleanor Tongerie (Year 11), Jordie Tongerie (Year 9), Korey Betts (2022) along with myself and Mrs Leanne Filmer were given the privilege of going to accept the award on behalf of the group involved. This was a very exciting day that I was honoured and privileged to be a part of.

The students involved in the Community Reconciliation Mural Project also included: Milika Filmer (Year 12), Aidan Shaw (2022), Annie Butler (Year 10), Caitlyn Brooks (Year 10), Edith Billing (Year 8), Harrison Lynn (Year 12), India Doherty (2022), Jade Betts (Year 8), Jennifer Hewitt (Year 11), Josie McClelland (Year 9), Luke Borgas (Year 10) and Monica Loubser (Year 9). Congratulations to all who were involved in the project. The Cornerstone students were privileged to work on a community based project such as this and are excited to continue working with our community on other reconciliation based events.

Thank you to Ms Clare Dorey for nominating the students and the project for this award and to Jacinta Smart for all her work in supporting the students during the project.

8 Term 1 ― February 2023 AROUND THE COLLEGE

College Duxes

It is an enormous privilege to recognise and present the following awards for the highest level of academic achievement at Cornerstone College.

Cornerstone is concerned about providing students with the opportunity to develop a personal relationship with Jesus, and to strive for personal excellence, learning and responsibility for life.

Creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, effective communication and deep and genuine character are allimportant to enable you to learn, connect and flourish in the 21st century.

It is recognised that as individual creations of God, we all have different and varied gifts, abilities, skills and talents. We acknowledge one aspect of learning we value at Cornerstone and expect all students to strive for – their personal academic best.

These awards recognise the highest level of academic quality and excellence. It is an example for all students in our community to acclaim, applaud and aspire. It is not only ok to be proud of the academic gifts God may have given you, it is your responsibility to use them to your fullest and encourage others to use theirs.

Ash Wednesday

"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return" (Genesis 3:19)

Ash Wednesday is traditionally celebrated as the beginning of the Christian journey to the cross. In other words, Wednesday represents 40 days till Easter, and is the first day of the season known as Lent. Here at Cornerstone, in the same way as thousands of Christian communities around the globe, we offered the Rite of Ashes.

We thank God for the message of the cross, for the scandal of it all, for the unexpected way in which God showed himself in the world – by giving up his life for all of humanity.

As we enter into this season of Lent, and as we journey to the cross of Easter this year, we ask God to help us understand more clearly the meaning of the cross, the depth of Christ’s love, and the power of grace.

Reminders from the H&PE team

Welcome back Senior students!

A couple of quick reminders from the H&PE team.

1. Senior students are expected to only be in PE during their lesson time. This means you need to change into PE before and after your lesson. If under exceptional circumstances, you cannot change back into your formal uniform a signed note is required from a parent/caregiver (not a text). Please note washing your uniform is not an exceptional reason.

2. Outdoor Ed students will normally complete their lessons in formal uniform. Your teacher will let you know ahead of time if this is not the case.

3. inbarendi at lunch times. 1:05pm to 1:15pm you are not to enter the gym. This is the time to exchange your ID card for sports equipment. 1:15pm you can enter the gym if you have sports shoes, no food or drink (Except water bottles that can be placed to the side).

We look forward to working with you again!

The Health and PE team

Keeping Our Community Safe

To maintain a safe and healthy learning environment for our staff and students, parents/caregivers are required continue to keep students at home if unwell, and advise the College if students obtain a positive COVID test result.

Absences can be notified using the Cornerstone App Students should not return back to the College whilst symptoms are present (usually 5 to 7 days).

Whilst masks are no longer mandated, they are an important physical barrier to prevent the spread and staff and students are supported in the wearing of masks, particularly indoors.’

Driver Awareness Seminars

Cornerstone College recognises the importance of our young people being well prepared before taking on the significant responsibility of being a driver on our roads.

As such, the College is facilitating Driver Awareness seminars for all Year 10 and 11 students. These seminars will be held on Thursday, 16 March at the College during Lessons 3, 4 & 5 for Year 11 students and Lessons 5 & 6 for Year 10 students. Attendance at these seminars is considered compulsory, as the seminars will occur as part of the normal school day. There is no cost to families for student participation in this event.

If you have any questions regarding this program, or if your child is at risk of being traumatised by hearing about the outcomes of motor vehicle crashes, please contact myself at the College by phone or via email: aday@cornerstone.sa.edu.au

Uniform Management Process (per semester)

1st Uniform Reminder = Grace given, HGT discusses with student and records in HG booklet.

2nd Uniform Reminder = HGT issues student a Focus Meeting Request (FMR).

3rd Uniform Reminder = HGT calls home and arranges a FASC. To be undertaken same week as the infringement.

4th Uniform Reminder = FASC paired with parent/HGT meeting (possibly with HL support) to initiate at home consequences.

Welcome to Middle School and Candle Ceremony

On Tuesday, 31 January the new Year 7s and their families attended the Welcome to Middle School and Candle Ceremony. This is an important occasion that marks the beginning of the Year 7s journey at Cornerstone. It is a time for our newest students to be introduced to the school community and for families to come together and connect with one another.

This year, after several years of modified events due to the pandemic, it was especially wonderful to be able to invite families back into the College again.

After a brief address from the Shane Schoff (Acting Principal), parents/caregivers were then able to meet their children's teachers, which was an important opportunity to build relationships and support their child's education.

The Candle Ceremony followed, each student was introduced to the Principal and given a commemorative candle of their own. This candle represents the passage Matthew 5:14-16: "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven"

The Welcome to Middle School and Candle Ceremony is an important occasion for students, families, and teachers alike. This year's event was particularly meaningful, as it brought families back together and allowed them to connect with one another and with the school community.

It is an occasion that will be remembered for years to come and one that will continue to be a cherished Cornerstone tradition.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

Year 12 First Day

The day before most Cornerstone students came back to school at the end of January, our Year 12 students diligently returned early for a day of reconnection, sharing, eating and getting used to being the elder year level.

Christian Living in Year 12 emphasises connection and service – and this started early in the day in Andy Traeger’s devotion where a ball of string intersected many different people, who each had their own story to tell.

The service aspect of the day was about preparing for class Legacy Projects. Individual classes each serve a particular community in a particular way, ideally leaving some sort of lasting imprint or ‘legacy’ on that community. This ‘Day zero’ was a time for classes to think about how they might go about their service project, while also getting to know the various personalities within their group.

We also heard wisdom from Chloe and Chris Blowes (2006) during the day. Chris, an old scholar of Cornerstone, lost his leg to a shark attack near Port Lincoln in 2015. They have since been rehabilitating and finding their way in the world, with some things changing, while others not. Chris still works as a carpenter and Chloe a school teacher, but they also spend time in schools, speaking to young and old students about life, adversity, determination and growth.

We hope the day gave an opportunity to enjoy good company and think about the road ahead, before the deep dive of Year 12 studies.

We wish our Year 12 students all the best as they embark on their final year of schooling.

Year 10 Careers Day

On Friday, 17 February our Year 10s made the trek to TAFE SA (Tonsley Campus) and Flinders University, for a series of presentations about their offerings and tours of the facilities. The students are currently investigating possible pathway options as part of the Personal Learning Plan (PLP) subject, and this gave them further insight into the different options available.

Earlier in the week, Year 10 students and their parents/caregivers attended an evening workshop to explore the students areas of interest and begin planning the Work Experience for Term 2.

Resources presented at this workshop are available via our Cornerstone Pathways website (www.cornerstonepathways.com) and families are encouraged to speak to their child’s PLP teacher or the Pathways team should they have any questions.
