SENIOR LEADERSHIP A Pilgrim Of The How The famous Camino De Santiago de Compostela “The Way of St James”, is a network of pilgrimages leading to the shrine of St James in Santiago De Compostela, Spain.

‘The Way’ is a movie starring Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez. This real-life Hollywood father and son team play the same roles in the story. After his son dies suddenly as he is about to begin walking the El Camino de Santiago de Compostela, the father becomes determined to complete the Camino in honour of his son. Along the Camino he meets many pilgrims who also have made personal commitments, some of which are spiritual, whilst others are secular. Although a fictional story, it weaves in thought provoking and meaningful themes of life, connection and purpose.

The Aussie Camino is a pilgrimage designed in the spirit of the famous Camino De Santiago de Compostela, where the pilgrims of the Aussie Camino walk in the footsteps of Saint Mary MacKillop, from Portland to Penola.

During my long service Leave, I, along with my fellow inaugural “Lutheran principal pilgrims”, completed the Aussie Camino. A month on, I have one physical reminder of the trip of slightly tired feet and numerous spiritual and leadership insights.

As I wandered around the Mary McKillop Penola Centre on our last day of The Aussie Camino, it was both enlightening and inspiring to reflect upon the story where Mary MacKillop and Julian Tenison Woods made their dream a reality. Woven within

this dream and the subsequent journey, was the culture and values inherent in Mary’s upbringing and heritage. As one storyboard succinctly expressed, the way in which Mary lived out her values was reflected in Mary’s: •

Sense of social justice and compassion

•

Belief in consensus and cooperation

•

Respect for the dignity of the individual

•

Spirit of Independence

Charity to all regardless of religion, race or culture.

Throughout Mary McKillop’s extraordinary life, she consistently lived out her values and built a culture in her Josephite Order of being welcoming, inclusive and compassionate.

One of the joys I have had as Principal of Cornerstone College is to hear about the varied and wonderful stories and journeys of Cornerstone College graduates. Whilst I am confident that their time at Cornerstone has played an important part in what they are now doing in their lives, I am ever more hopeful that Cornerstones College has influenced how they live their lives, and that it expresses the values we share, express and practice as part of the culture of Cornerstone College.

It has been a privilege and honour to serve Cornerstone College over the last almost 11 years and I have many fond and enduring memories of my time as Principal. Cornerstone is a wonderful community and I leave in the knowledge that God’s story will continue to be told in and through the learning, support and care that is central to the College’s mission. My children (Hamish, Charlie and Lucy), Celia and I have been wonderfully blessed by our experiences at Cornerstone and I have deeply valued the support and trust the community has consistently shown in my leadership.

The following are words shared with students at our ‘Service in Memorium’ this week.

Welcome to a special chapel this morning, one our College sets aside in the first week of November each year, to remember loved ones that students and staff may have lost during this year. This is a tradition that stems from out of the 4th Century AD and is known as All Saints Day since that time.

At Cornerstone, we wish to continue this tradition as a meaningful way for members of our community to remember those who are no longer with us. When we lose people close to us, there are few things that are more painful.

It is in the very nature of death and loss for human beings to grieve, and to grieve deeply, and when we grieve the tears run without ceasing and the pain and sorrow is overwhelming.

To those of us who have grieved this year, we wish to offer you words of hope and love drawn from the Scriptures; words drawn from a God who wishes to be with us, in the midst of our grief and loss, and to hold us tightly in our most difficult hour.

The students were able to remember loved ones by writing or painting on a mural that was being created during the service.

WELLBEING

SPECIAL REPORT: A Guide To Safe Partying Teenage gatherings provide young people with important opportunities to interact and build on their social skills and experiences. Celebrations, partying and socialising are a fundamental rite of passage and one of the most important aspects of a young person’s life. However, it is possible for the best young person to get carried away with their peers and the euphoria of the moment.

For parents and caregivers, keeping your young person safe can at times feel daunting and is often a compromise and a challenge. Most teenagers try to do the right thing most of the time, but your leadership as a role model is crucial. Your child may appear to be physically large and mature, but this is not necessarily matched by their emotional maturity and responsibility in behaviour.

Every party has the potential to get out-of-hand as sometimes it’s hard for young partygoers to make good decisions.

Communication and regular discussions are vital, particularly because young people are often faced with peer pressure to do things they prefer not to engage in.

Hosting a celebration at home or at a venue can be a fun and memorable event but it is important to agree on the ground rules well before your event is announced to ensure there are no misunderstandings later on.

If hosting an event, you owe your guests a ‘duty-of-care’ and should ensure all reasonable steps are taken to keep partygoers safe. This Special Report provides caregivers with list of things to consider when planning a celebration. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. End of Term House Event (Summit to School) On the last day of Term 3, Cornerstone held the annual School to Summit House event.

Approximately 800 students and staff travelled from the College along the Linear Trail. After some major changes to the route last year where we ran or walked through the stunning Laratinga Wetlands and into Summit Sport and Recreation Park we were able to reintroduce a cycling component to the event.

This was a fantastic opportunity to interact with the wonderful mural that David Booth (along with students from our College) created earlier in the year. It was an excellent way to celebrate the end of the term by being out under the sun, amongst good company and in our beautiful local community.

With some great participation and strong runners Naturi won the event and took out the ‘Smelly Sandshoe Trophy’.

AROUND THE COLLEGE In a joint effort to encourage the youth to feel motivated in textile classes, Heinz Leuenberger and Allmake Sewing donated a Bernette 33 sewing machine which was won by to Rikki-May (Year 7) for her entry in the ‘Win a Sewing Machine’ competition.

Below is her entry: My name is Rikki-May I am 12 years old, and Sewing is something that I find fun and it makes me happy my brother is getting married next year and I would really like to be able to sew my own dress for it to eliminate more costs than needed.

In the future I want to be able to make money and not lose all of it to clothes shopping and something that makes me excited is being able to use a sewing machine instead of hand sew most things. If I won this, I would improve my technique and learn how to use it well and hopefully make lots of clothes without too much expense. So far, I have only made a pillow, but I would love to broaden my horizons throughout all my schooling and hopefully make lots of things to make people other than myself happy.

If your child requires bus transport to or from Cornerstone via the routes below in 2023, then you will need to submit an application form by Wednesday, 7 December (end of this College term). Each student on this family form will incur a non-refundable processing fee of $20.00 payable to Cornerstone College (charged to your College account).

It is recommended that families only complete an application form if their child meets the eligibility guidelines and are in an area that is serviced by the DfE buses, to avoid unnecessary charges.

Generally, families will be advised by the end of this term if their child has been approved for travel. However, families who submit their application form late may have to wait until the first couple of weeks of Term 1 for MBHS to accurately determine and allocate final bus seating.

The 14th Annual Cornerstone Golf Classic – Friday, 14 October What a fantastic day! The Golf Day was another huge success.

The weather was kind and the rain held off, the comradery was infectious, laughs were a plenty and Aston Hills Golf Club provided near perfect conditions for a great day of golf.

The day began with barista coffee and the smell of bacon sizzling on the hot plate. 15 teams then took to the course for 18 rounds of Ambrose golf.

An informal prize presentation followed once the golfers returned, with a delicious lunch including drinks.

There were plenty of fabulous prizes on offer and the competition was extremely close!

Congratulations to our winners – 1st Aussie Mozzie (parent team), 2nd Bogey Boyz (Old Scholar team) and 3rd Higgins Coatings (College Sponsor) – you are all very talented golfers!

A special mention to our two “encouragement awards” who tied again this year – Rhett and his team from Country Blinds, who once again kept the day light and fun, and RTG (Cornerstone’s very own IT support) who both improved on last year’s scores.

A further special mention to our partners and in particular Rudi and the team from Southern Cross Cleaning, Duttons, Higgins Coatings and Lanser – we appreciate your generous and continued support.

Music Cabaret We’ve been waiting a LONG time for this…

On Friday, 16 September the Cornerstone Music Department was thrilled to hold, for the first time in three years, our celebrated Cabaret concert.

With the theme and tagline Sounds of the South − in joyful strains then let us sing and play, we had a focus on Australian composers and arrangers.

We were delighted to see performances from all of Cornerstone’s music ensembles throughout Middle and Senior School, with the opening act being a combined item featuring all of Cornerstone’s performing musicians playing the iconic Aussie anthem Down Under.

The Australian theme and focus was reflected in song choices from ensembles and décor used. Stunning Indigenous style artwork framing the stage and native flora as table centres, captured the Australian motif beautifully. Each table had a focus on a different rural SA town, and we made sure that no audience member left uneducated! The tables featured a description and history the town.

We were incredibly lucky to hear breathtaking (and theatrically entertaining) performances from our talented Year 12 soloists.

The night’s special guests included local funk band Terry’s Pocket, who showed us virtuosic solos and incredible funk tunes, leaving all of inbarendi grooving out! It was wonderful to see the St Michael’s Primary choir perform, under the direction of Cornerstone’s Sophie Zerner. The evening began

with pre-show entertainment from the new band, The Nineteenth Step, featuring Year 11 students Liam Carver, Sebastian Tonkin and Heidi Fopp.

It felt amazing to have inbarendi alive with music once again, and this wouldn’t have happened without the work of our talented Communications & Engagement and Maintenance teams, phenomenal Music directors and our kind sponsors, Duttons and Beyond Bank.

Thank you especially to my fellow Music Council Members and to Mr Anthony Janus, Mr Andrew Day and Ms Sophie Zerner for all their hard work and dedication and passion.

40 Hour Famine In September, 259 Cornerstone College participants partnered with World Vision to fight famine and end world hunger by completing the 40 Hour Famine.

These participants gave up something of importance to them for 40 hours and raised money through sponsorships in support of those who have far less than we do. Service is an important part of our College, and it was wonderful to see so many people take up the challenge to help others.

Our College Leaders were great ambassadors for the 40 Hour Famine and partnered with student House Leaders to run a Home Group activity that highlighted the challenges of living on less than $14 a week.

Our Year 7 classes also learnt about the work of World Vision in Christian Living. As a result of this, the Year 7C and Year 7D classes competed against each other and raised over $7,000.00 between them. This year we achieved record participation as the importance of the cause was highlighted in the school community.

The final amount raised this year by Cornerstone College was $31,522.00. This placed us as the top fundraising school in Australia. It was a tremendous effort and we are so proud of all the students and staff who participated in the 2022 40 Hour Famine. Because of their efforts, approximately 630 families were able to meet their basic food needs for a month.

We thank all those involved in making the 40 Hour Famine a success this year, and look forward to an even more successful year in 2023 as we work to end world hunger.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Year 7 Adelaide Zoo In the last week of Term 3, the Year 7 core classes, and their teachers, headed down the hill to spend a day at the Adelaide Zoo. The day was filled with much excitement, amazing observations and just a little bit of work to complete! The opportunity to escape the confines of the classroom was appreciated by the students (and their teachers) and, thankfully, the weather was just about perfect with only the odd shower. This didn’t dampen enthusiasm, with the students thoroughly enjoying the wide variety of animals on display, with the meerkats, the monkeys and the cassowary being the 2022 favourites.

The excursion was an amazing way to finish our science unit on the classification of animals.

SENIOR SCHOOL El Roi Baby Home at LIV Lanseria This semester the Year 10 Christian Living program encompasses the question ‘How can we explore the whole story of God?’ We would like to allow our students to make connections with their world, its people, and its creator.

My class recently welcomed Shell Mckenzie who shared about her faith journey growing up, making choices about future pathways and her heart to serve in El Roi Baby Home at LIV Lanseria, South Africa.

Shell is going back to this baby home as a full time volunteer.

Her passion for babies, travel and heart for God led her to this place pre covid and now she is heading back there to serve once more in this orphanage again.

Her story challenged our classes to think about our purpose in life, how our transition out of school can move in different directions and how God can be our source of truth and hope in a broken world.

Year 10 Outdoor Education Ali Hodgson’s and my Year 10 Outdoor Education classes embarked on their 3 day hiking expedition to the Flinders Ranges in Week 9 of Term 3.

There were 4 walking groups; two who began their adventure from Mambray Creek, one group from Melrose and the final group from Alligator Gorge.

The weather was rainy on day one, but we were blessed with sunshine for the remaining days, however all groups faced some challenging terrain at times with steep ups and downs and some creek crossings along the way.

The aim of this camp was to develop students’ skills in navigation, leadership, camping specific skills such as packing a rucksack, setting up a tent and cooking their meals on Trangia stoves. Students also were encouraged to establish positive bonds with their peers and improve their resilience, independence and initiative.

We would like to commend all of the Year 10 Outdoor Education students on their amazing efforts over the three days. We would also like to thank Aidan Mitchell, Meg Molenaar and Old Scholars Hunter Roberts (2021), Mason Ryan-Borbasi (2021), Henry Fielke (2016) and Lachlan Bates (2020) for assisting on the trip and making it one to remember.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Year 12 Final Day And so we have arrived at the end of an era!

The Year 12s have now completed all formal lessons and are now either celebrating all that has been achieved or finishing their final exams.

As staff at Cornerstone College, the privilege has been ours to journey with these young people and watch their development over what has arguably been some of the most formative years of their life. It is with great pride that we send off these students, to pursue their interests, broaden their knowledge, sharpen their skills, and contribute meaningfully to our society.

They have shown grit, humility, and strength of character in their approach to learning whilst balancing their studies with work, family, and play.

After the completion of formal lessons, we held a day of celebration with the Class of 2022 on Friday, 28 October.

The day started out with a shared breakfast where students and staff could mingle. This was followed by their final Chapel service, during which they received a standing ovation and were recognised for their monumental achievements over the past 6 years. The day continued on with a variety of activities on the oval − the waterslide this year was rumoured to be even bigger than last year’s, mini golf, and giant soccer darts, followed by a couple of hours jumping around at Bounce.

We were delighted with the students’ behaviour and overall attitude on the day. The weather was on our side too which was certainly good for morale!

We sincerely wish the Year 12s all the best for final exams and for whatever endeavours they take up in the future.

SENIOR SCHOOL Year 11 Physics Rocket Launch Does it need to be rocket science?

The answer was ”YES” for a group of Year 11 Physics students.

Over a number of weeks these students dedicated their time to construct and assemble their own rocket. The rocket had a 2-stage solid-fuel engine and was equipped with a recovery parachute.

The weather conditions were acceptable in Week 9 of Term 3 and students launched their rockets into mild south-easterly winds.

The launch and reaching altitudes of more than 200m certainly sparked our rocket scientists fascination in reaching for the stars.

Drug, Alcohol and Safe-Partying Information for senior students On Tuesday, 20 September we were blessed to have Ed Ruediger (2016) from Encounter Youth Education present a 60 minute Safety at Schoolies/Safe Partying seminar to our Year 12 cohort. Being a Cornerstone graduate himself (Class of 2016), Ed related well to our students and gave timely information and advice for our students in preparation for upcoming school leaving celebrations.

Further, on Monday, 26 September Mr Paul Dillon from DARTA presented three tailored sessions to our Years 10, 11 and 12 students giving the latest information relating to drugs and alcohol use in Australia.

Mr Dillon has worked extensively with a range of sporting organisations including the Australian Cricketers Association, the Rugby Union Players Association and the Football Federation of Australia to provide training workshops to elite athletes on a range of alcohol and other drug issues.

He has a book titled ‘Teenagers, Alcohol and Drugs‘ which has recently been released internationally.

Paul regularly provides media comment and is regarded as a key social commentator in Australia, appearing on a wide range of television programs including Sunrise, TODAY and The Project discussing topical issues. Paul also has a blog where he discusses topical issues of the day.

SPORTS Year 11/12 Soccer This year the team was pleased to make the state finals after two wins in the knockout stages.

In game one, our team convincingly beat St Francis 8-3 and all played well. Lots of goals by Kyle Fenlon (Year 12), William Smith (Year 12), Asher Nye (Year 11), Kane Gibbs (Year 12), Xavier Kell (Year 12) Shannon Cox (Year 12).

The next game was played against Mt Gambier High School at Bordertown. It was quite a long trip to play a tough game where the team won 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out. There was quite a loud celebration when the winning goal was scored by Kyle “Nerves of Steel − Penalty Winner” Fenlon!

Ekiden Relay On Thursday, 20 October Graham Gallasch and I accompanied 16 students to the annual Ekiden Relay event.

The Ekiden relay held at Bonython Park is a long distance running relay consisting of 8 team members who all run varying distances from 1km to 5.4km, with a total of 20.6km run per team.

This year, Cornerstone entered in an open girls team and an open boys team. The girls team consisting of Karli Roberts (Year 12), Lucy May (Year 12), Jade Callaghan (Year 11), Ella Short (Year 9), Breanna Luxon (Year 8), Chloe Cotton (Year 8),

This second round success took us to the state finals where we ended up finishing in fourth place. We battled away against stronger opposition and lost both games 4-2. I would like to thank all squad players for representing the college with pride and dedication and look forward to another challenge in 2023.

The boys team consisting of Matthew Armitage (Year 12), Jordan Cresp (Year 12), Matthew Blandford (Year 10), Jack Main (Year 10), Bailey Swain (Year 8), Gus Battiston (Year 8), Jordie Tongerie (Year 8) and Harry Schulz (Year 8) came 7th overall.

Well done to both teams for having a fantastic attitude on the day.

Success & Achievements Aiden Sutton (Year 11) Aiden represented Cornerstone at the VIVA All Schools Games on the weekend in the U18s boys high jump and won the event with a PB jump of 1.90m. Aiden has now qualified to represent Cornerstone and SA at the All Schools National Championships being held here in Adelaide in December.

Brianna Lyons (Year 12) − UniSA Accelerate graduate Brianna is the first Cornerstone student to achieve success in this new initiative with UniSA. UniSA Accelerate gives Year 12 students the opportunity to start studying university courses and guarantees them a place into one of UniSA’s many business degrees.

Brianna completed the Macroeconomics unit online during Semester 2 this year.

We acknowledge her hard work, determination and commitment to completing this as part of her Year 12 studies.

Emily spent a lot of her recent school holidays participating in swimming training camps at the AIS and Gold Coast for talented athletes looking towards the Paris 2024 Para Olympics, and beyond!

Macie recently competed at the Australian Junior World Diving Championship Trials in Brisbane.

Emily also competed at the Australian Country Swimming Championships held in Darwin with the Onkaparinga Swimming Club.

She competed in 10 heats and 10 finals over 4 days of racing and took home a gold medal in all events!

Emily swam 9 personal bests and was able to meet a lot of other Para swimmers and was able to reconnect with some others who she hadn’t seen in a while. That is certainly holidays well spent!

She placed 1st in 3m Springboard and 2nd in the 1m Springboard event.

From these results she has been selected to represent Australia at the 2022 FINA World Junior Diving Championships in Montreal Canada at the end of November.

Chelsea Clarke (Year 11) I just wanted to let you know that Chelsea won the CCN2* and she is now officially a National Champion!

She was leading after Dressage (they did the most beautiful test), did a beautiful clear show jumping round and then absolutely nailed the Cross Country, in what I can only describe as very wet and challenging conditions.

She was a true professional from the moment we got here; doing everything on her own (other riders all had one or two of

their parents doing everything for them) and helping others to plait and treat their horses.

This win is huge; nobody from SA has ever won this class (so I am told) and I only know of one other that even competed at this top level, and she was eliminated on cross country.

Chelsea has certainly represented Cornerstone College and the State in the most amazing and professional manner in becoming a National Champion!

‘Bliss’ is an acoustic music duo that Jasmine created with her cousin Bethany.

Jessica had two young horses compete at the Interschools Nationals in the dressage – this was Jessie’s first national competition and the first time interstate for the boys.

They play at cafes and wineries from Langhorne Creek to Tanunda and were asked to play on 3 days at The Royal Adelaide Show, including an interview with Sonya Feldhoff from Radio Adelaide on Thursday, 8 September and they played a song on air.

Belluci’s Boy (Frankie) is a 4 year old former racehorse and Crusader S (Cruz) a 6 year old warmblood.

She has loved being part of the team and is thrilled with how well the boys have coped with the travel and the atmosphere.

Vaping (the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes or 'vapes') continues to be an issue that attracts a great deal of attention as well as debate across the country. Vaping is a new phenomenon, with the first e-cigarette being invented in 2003.

As a result, many parents have little or no experience with the issue as the devices simply weren’t around when they were in their teens.

parents attempting to make sense of the information provided by both the ‘pro-vaping’ and ‘anti-vaping’ lobbies may find it extremely difficult to navigate. As we move towards the end of the school year parents are likely to need as much assistance as possible.
