Kerr rises to the cadet challenge Coonabarabran High School student, Emily Kerr, has been promoted to Commander Under Officer (CUO), after successfully completing the Army Cadet Officers’ Course at Holsworthy Barracks, Sydney.

She also became the first cadet officer comma nd i ng of the Coonabarabran unit and has been invited back to Holsworthy Barracks as an instructor.

Sixty cadets attended the course, which CUO Kerr said consisted of lectures and drills on which the students were assessed.

CUO Kerr said she was proud on the rank she received. “ It is something

everyone in the program looks forward to,” she said.

“It shows commitment, knowledge – and a high level of respect.”

CUO Kerr first joined the Austra l ian A i r Force Cadets in Moree in 2020. After moving to Coonabarabran, she continued participating remotely unti l the Coonabarabran A rmy Cadet Un it was established. She quickly jumped at the oppor tun ity to get involved.

“It [cadets] is a great program, even if you are not interested in joining the army,” she said. “ T he y d o w o rk i n STEM, with drones –

and other fields.”

CUO Kerr emphasised how the program had helped her forge connections with other like-minded teenagers. “ I have f r iends a l l over NSW. It is a great opportunity to network with others who have the same niche hobbies.”

The program provides c adet s w it h a br oad skillset they will use for life. Beyond leadership skills, CUO Kerr said the program promotes respect and manners in the cadets and, for her, had instilled confidence and taught her how to engage with others at a higher standard.

Dusan Dakic founded the C oonaba rabran unit after recognising a need for youth programs beyond sports. “ The unit has had g reat suppor t from community organisations, such as the Coonabarabran RSL Sub-branch, Aboriginal Land Council, as well as the State and Federal Members of Parliament, who all provided letters of support,” he said.

“We are housed at the Coonaba rabran High School – they have been ver y ac c om mod at i ng and supportive of the program.”

Commenting on the impact CUO Kerr has had on the unit,

LT (ACC) Dakic said “Emily joining the unit has been a big bonus for us. “ She has had a substantial amount of training prior to joining the unit.

“Emily jumped straight in, teaching lessons, and has been a role model for the other cadets.”

Currently, 15 students f r om Ye a r s 7-10 a r e enrolled in the program

at Coonabarabran. LT (AAC) Dakic encourages students aged 13 to 18 to join, noting that those who start between 13 and 15 “get the most out of it.”

He said the program is not just for those interested in the Defence Forces.

“While the program is a great stepping stone into the military, most cadets do not go on to join the army – but it is

a great opportunity for those interested in the outdoors and gaining life skills.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR  editor@coonabarabrantimes.com Wonderful book review Thank you for the wonderful new book review section, ‘Checked Out’, that appeared in the 20 March edition of your wonderful newspaper.

Being a librarian and a bibliophile (lover of books), I was so intrigued to see this section and have soaked up every word.

I read George Eliot’s ‘Middlemarch’ as part of a history unit in my degree; we were looking at English history at the time. I remember that I discovered, like Bec in the review did, that it was an emotionpacked book, where the characters were so real and experienced

the whole gamut of emotions and, most uniquely, it showed the results and perhaps the justice/outcomes of the characters’ actions, whether good or bad.

An excellent read, both Eliot’s book and its review. Keep up the great work Bec! Might I also suggest, as you mentioned your liking for Victorian novels, Elizabeth Gaskell’s ‘North and South’. I just finished it recently and it also has a fantastic BBC adaptation featuring the wonderful acting talents of Richard Armitage.

But I digress – the novel, in my view, is even better than the BBC portrays (even though

Kez iah studied fo r her paramedic degree in Port Macquarie and is eager to connect with the Baradine community while p r ov i d i n g e s s e n t i a l emergency ser vices to the region.

H a r r i et a n d Keziah make up the full complement of paramedics in Baradine, alongside Brendon and Anthony w h o w i l l s tay i n g fo r some time in the town.

St Lawrence’s kicking for WORD WORD goals with oval upgrade

St Lawrence’s Catholic Primary School’s new oval upgrades are nearing completion, providing improved facilities for students during lunchtime, sports and PE lessons.

by MOLLY SHANNON + ELEANOR RAPLEY Commencing in N ove m b e r l a s t ye a r, the p roj ect i ncl uded the construction of two multi - purpose hard cour ts that can be seamlessly interchanged for basketball, netball, tennis, volleyball, pickleball and handball.

The undercover cou r ts p rovide al l weather usability and sun protection, while the installation of a new tank w i l l col lect rainwate r runoff from the roof for re-purposing. The area has also been enhanced with landscaping, including new turf.

The team behind the project was local firm, Prugger Group Pty Ltd, led by Anthony Prugger. “ W e w e r e a p p r o a c h e d by J e n T h i r ke l l a n d N ata s h a Milford to express our interest in delivering the multi-purpose courts for the Catholic school,” Mr Prugger said.

“They had received seve ra l out- of-tow n quotes and were hoping that maybe it could be awarded to someone local.”

I n i t i a l l y, P r u g g e r Group was set to handle earthworks, landscaping and stormwater management, however, thei r scope of wo r k ex p a n d e d w h e n t h e o r ig i na l shed bui l de r w i t h d rew at t h e l a s t minute.

“It did become a b i g g e r p ro j ect w h en the builder pulled out,” Mr Prugger said.

“There was a week of back- and -fo r th

discussions about who was goi ng to bui ld it before we pretty much decided that we could just build it ourselves. “ We recr u ited a couple of guys, one from Gilgandra and one from Dubbo, to come across and help us put it up.”

D e s p i t e t h e unexpected changes, Mr Prugger was eager to take on the cha l l eng e, d ra w i ng from his background in civil engineer ing and surveying, as well as his experience constructing P r u g g e r G ro u p' s b u s shed.

Future proof When designing the p r o j e c t, M r P r u g g e r p r i o r it i sed a m od e r n look and long -ter m functionality, ensuring the facility could grow a n d a d a pt w i t h t h e school as its requirements changed.

“To b r i ng the toi let shed into a more modern design, we added a new facade bet ween the brickwork and the roof so that it didn’t look like an add-on, but rather a cohesive part of the building,” he explained.

“The shed structure had to be clear-span to cover the entire court and there were a few design options regarding orientation – north-south o r east-west. I chose ea s t-wes t beca use, down the track, if they wanted to install solar panels or create a solar farm on the roof, they could.

“The northern face of the roof is specifically designed to carry solar panels. If it ran northsouth, solar panels

wouldn’t be as efficient.

Running the ridge e a s t- wes t a l l ow s t h e entire northern face to a cco m m o d a te s o l a r panels.”

Ad d i t i o n a l l y, a cantilever design was used to ensure no a d d i t i o n a l l o a d wa s placed on the existing building.

“There are no posts on that side. If you look at it, there's nothing touching the building other than the cladding facade,” Mr Prugger said.

Safety first F o r t h e p a s t t h re e years, the sports courts at St Law rence’s had been unusable due to root growth damaging the surface and making it unsafe.

In addition to being fully-fenced, the new b u i l d i s fo c u s s e d o n improving accessibility and safety, with a new ramp installed.

“A s s o o n a s w e received the elevations fo r th e n ew co u r t s, I realised that access from the pedestrian crossing to the courts would be an issue,” Mr Pr ugger said.

“Rather than cease work, I consulted with Council to determine w hat cou l d be done to a ch i eve sa fe a n d compliant access.

“That enti re front s e ct i o n wa s my ow n design and we worked w i t h a l o ca l b u i l d e r to deliver it efficiently w ithout delay i ng the project.”

The construction team involved in the project was small, consisting of 12 members, with five actively working on-site.

Despite their numbers, they successfully completed the project within five months.

For both the school and Mr Prugger, keeping the wo r k local was a priority.

The majo r it y of the project relied on local workers and resources, however, outsourcing was necessar y for specif ic task s such as concrete wor k, painting the courts and assembling the shed.

Funded by the Catholic Education Office through a major capital works program g ra nt, St La w re n ce’s pr incipal, Natasha Milford said the school community was thrilled to se e t h e u p g ra d es completed after significant delays.

“This project has been a l o n g t i m e co m i n g, with the planning held up during COVID,” Mrs Milford said.

“We are ver y pleased to have now seen so much progress happening so quickly and are thankful to the Pr ugger Group and the Catholic Education Office Bathurst Limited (CE D B L), w h o h a ve accompanied us on this journey.”

Mrs Milford said she was looking forward to watching students enjoy the new space.

“This area will benefit our students and staff by allowing them to have a state-of-the-art, modern hard-court area to play on.”

An official opening of the multi-purpose courts will be held later in the year.

St Lawrence’s school leaders and house captains were keen as beans to test out the new school sporting shelter.

I wanted to be an artist, but never had the talent.

What’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had? I worked as a receptionist at a sleep study clinic.

Best thing about living in Coonabarabran? The space – we have so much room around us.

What/who do you think is your spirit animal? Definitely a grizzly bear.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given? Let them!

What are the top three things o n yo u r b u cke t l i s t ? H a ve a sustainable garden, f inish my renovations and travel to Europe.

Police launch rapid response units to tackle youth crime NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Paul Pisanos last week announced a high-level youth strategy including 60 new dedicated police and rapid response units to tackle juvenile crime across NSW. Deputy Commissioner P isa nos lau nched ‘Operation Soteria’ to address an escalation of violence in offenders aged between 11-16 years of age across western and northern parts of the state.

The operation kicked off in Dubbo, with Police Commissioner K aren Webb, focusing on the arrest of recidivist ring leaders and the diversion of you n g, f i r s t -t i me offenders.

O p er at ion S ot er i a will focus on aggravated break, enter and steal offences, stealing motor vehicles and ‘post and boast’ offences, where kids use social media to gain notoriety for their

crimes.

Deputy Commissioner Pisanos said there will also be a strong focus on diverting young offenders away f r om c r i m i n a l behaviour.

“The operational arm of this operation will consist of high-visibility policing, ta rgeting a d e f i ne d c oh o r t o f hu n d r e d s o f r e p e at offenders believed to be responsible for 90 per cent of youth crime across regional NSW,” he said.

The new unit of up to 60 dedicated police will target regional hot spots including Moree, Ta mwor th , D ubbo, Orange, Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour, Kempsey, Taree and Newcastle over

the next three months.

“This is about working to prevent, disrupt and respond to serious violent youth crime and reduce fear in the community.”

An extra 20 officers w i l l supplement t he unit in the form of surge operations each week, to bolster operational numbers to 80.

Polair and roaming r e s p o n s e u n it s w i l l complement highvisibility operations.

“This is about sending a clear message to these young criminals that we are going to find you and lock you up,” Deputy Pol ice C ommissioner Pisanos said.

Police Commissioner Karen Webb said the

fear of crime in rural communities was having a significant impact. “ It ’s a l s o a b out reduci ng fea r i n the c o m m u n i t y, n o o n e deserves to be frightened in their own home – and in regional NSW that has been the case, it has to stop,” she said.

Under Operation Soteria, which means ‘safety’, command hubs will be established in each region. Investigators will use real-time intelligence to identi fy ‘post and boast ’ so cia l-med ia trends, and those on the periphery of offending will be diverted to youthsupport services.

As part of the prevention a rm of

Operation Soteria, police will aim to identify and refer young offenders into programs such as YAMS (Youth Action Meetings), a multi-agency forum designed to help at risk young people from reoffending.

Other youth programs through the NSW Police Crime Prevention and Youth Command (CPYC) will also be utilised.

“Part of this mission is to lock up the ring leaders and divert others away from a life of crime,” Deputy Commissioner Pisanos said.

“The prevention arm o f t h i s op er at ion i s extremely important, as we want to funnel young kids on the fringe

of this criminal activity into suitable programs and away from criminal activity.”

O p er at ion S ot er i a will be responsible for a state-wide coordinated response to youth crime and will take overall command and control of criminal investigations into offending across Northern and Western NSW Police regions.

Soteria will oversee O p e r at i o n R e g i o n a l Mongoose, which was established in September 2 023 a nd has been arresting, on average, 13 young offenders every week.

Crisis meetings with social media platforms, and the E -Safety

Commissioner will also be called to shut down the novelty of posting criminal activity.

“To be clear, posting and boasting criminal activity will not g ive young offenders notoriety – it will land them in custody,” Deputy Commissioner Pisanos said.

Since new ‘post and boast’ legislation came into effect 12 months ago, 53 individuals have been charged; of those, 27 were under the age of 16.

O p er at ion S ot er i a w i l l a l s o work w it h community leaders to provide regular updates on progress to engage with victims of crime in impacted areas.

Racing for a reason The Coonabarabran Jockey Club is preparing for another Autumn Race Meeting, filled with fun, fashion and fund-raising on Saturday, 5 April.

With the gates o p e n i n g a t 11 a m , the annual event is a perfect day out for the whole family, featuring a six-race program, full barbecue, TAB, fashion on the field and free entry.

The race meet brings the local community together each year to raise awareness and funds for a charitable organisation.

This year, the event will support the Riding for the Disabled A s sociation (RDA) Coonabarabran.

This local community organisation provides those living with a disability, or additional suppor t needs, the opportunity to develop confidence and co n n e ct i o n th ro ug h equine activities such as riding, sulky driving and general equine care.

Hawkins emphasised the i mpo r tance of supporting community groups.

“Being a small town, when the opportunity arises to support other local organisations we are more than happy to help where we can,” she said.

“We are hoping for a great roll-up of people to support the RDA and the wonderful services it provides to the local community.”

Suppor ting people using the RDA services is made possible through not only fund-raising, but volunteers.

“The RDA is a volunteer-based organisation and, a s w i t h m a ny s m a l l volunteer g roups, they a re l ook i ng fo r assistance – no special sk i lls a re requi red to vol untee r. If you can assist in any way please reach out to Melissa Clarke or Pam Ramage.

“RDA volunteers will be at th e g ate a n d wandering the grounds th roughout the day, collecting donations in lieu of gate entry and will be available to answer any questions you may h a ve re g a rd i n g t h e RDA.” W h i l e t h e J o c ke y Club’s Autumn Race M e et co nt r i b utes to charitable organisations e a c h y e a r, L i n d s a y said it was not the only objective of the day.

“We just want everyone to come out and have a great day,” Lindsay said.

“It is always a great atmosphere and a great oppor tunity to con nect w ith o l d friends”.

The Coonabarabran Jockey Club committee is not only dedicated to the success of its race days th roughout the year, but the facilities they provide to other organisations and

events hosted on the grounds.

“CJC has a fantastic volunteer committee of around 20 people and the club has around 100 members.

“Our volunteer s u p p o r t i s a m a z i n g, it includes the organisation of track curation, gardening, c a t e r i n g , b a r s ta f f, decorations, fashions, ground upgrades – and the list goes on and on!

“While we race t h r e e t i m e s a ye a r, o u r vo l u nte e r s wo r k ye a r- ro u n d to ke e p the g rounds l ook i ng spectacular, promote t h e c l u b, co m p l ete u p g ra d e s a n d h o l d functions.”

Supporting the Jockey Club subsequently s u p p o r t s t h e eve nt s and organisations they accommodate, further enhancing the prosperity of the local community.

“A ra n g e of ot h e r events are held throughout the year, including cross country, wedd i ng s and sk i l l s’ days.”

Lindsay said the club had fu r ther plans to upgrade infrastructure to improve the facility.

“We are planning to install female jockey rooms and a new ca l l e r ’s towe r. B ot h additions will benefit

racing events, however, the fema le jockey rooms will also benefit EXPO participants.”

Supernova squad shines Coonabarabran High School’s robotics team, Supernova Star Squad, put their skills to the test at the Southern Cross Regionals, returning home with valuable experience and high hopes for future competitions.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY From 6-9 March, the Coonabarabran High School robotics team, Supernova Star Squad (team 6 476), battled it out at the Southern Cross Regionals in Penrith. Science teachers Ms Sherelle Moore and Mrs. Maleisah Eshman took 17 students, alongside two parent mentors, to the competition.

Coming home with a ranking of 2 2 - 41, t h e te a m r et u r n e d m ot i va t e d fo r upcom i ng competitions.

Le a d i n g t h e te a m fo r many yea r s, M s Moore is no stranger to the p repa ration and execution of a competition. “ E v e r y o n e contributed positively.

Before the tournament, students worked hard designing and building t h e r o b ot, c r e a t i n g team badges, sewing bumper material and securing sponsorship,” she said.

“A t t h e e v e n t , students worked well driving the robot, fixing t h e r o b ot, s c o u t i n g infor mation about other robots, and sel l i ng ou r team to the judges. The team represented the school beautifully!”

“It is one of the best yea r s I have been involved in,” Max said.

Ms Moore noted that the robotics team had attracted a number of new students.

“The students s u p p o r t e a c h ot h e r – they are always learning new skills and building confidence in talking and networking with other teams,” she said.

T h i s y e a r ’ s theme, Reef scape, challenged teams to h ave th e i r ro bot s collect as much “co ral” and “algae” as possible within t wo m i n utes a n d 3 0 seconds, placing the objects in a net. Each round featured three teams competing to climb the ranks.

D e s p i t e t h e adrenaline-filled atmosphere in the pit, the Coona High team worked cohesively.

“Multiple people worked on the robot at the same time,” Max said.

“The team had good communication when n e c e s s a r y,” C a l l u m added.

However, the team certainly faced challenges along the

way.

“When the robot b roke in bet ween matches, we were in a big rush as we only had 3 0 m i nutes bet ween matches,” Callum said.

“We wor k with limited resources and

for the year ahead. “ O u r n e x t co m p et i t i o n i s D u e l D ow n U n d e r, w h e re we are hoping to climb t h e l e a d e r b o a r d ,” Callum said.

interest in mentor ing younger students.

CWA NSW launches koala conservation program For more than 100 years, the Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW has tackled significant issues and now has turned its focus to koala conservation.

“We are excited to announce the launch of the CWA of NSW Koala Prog ram website,” a spokesperson for the organisation said.

“This new resource h u b of fe r s p l a n n i n g tem p l ates, activities and educational mate r ial s designed to help branches plan and implement their own koala conservation events.

“Koalas are an iconic p a r t of Au s t ra l i a’s wildlife, but they face numerous threats. By organising an event in their local community, members will educate about koala behaviour, habitats, and the challenges they face.

“Mem be r s w i l l g et t ra i n i ng on how to spot and record koala s ig hti ng s i n o rde r to co nt r i b ute va l u a b l e data to conser vation effor ts. By increasing the reporting of koala sightings, we empower con se r vat i o n i s t s to p r ot e c t ko a l a s a n d thei r habitats across NSW. “We are urging the NSW Government to improve and strengthen legislation to s a fe g u a r d ko a l a habitat and establish h a b i ta t co r r i d o r s to facilitate connectivity between fragmented koala populations essential for promoting

genetic diversity and long-term survival.”

The association said members were invited to take part in a short sur vey to understand their interest in koala conser vation and in par ticipating in the conser vation campaign. The survey responses have helped to design the conser vation campaign activities.

E ig ht y pe r cent of s u r ve y r e s p o n d e n t s indicated that t h ey we re c u r re nt l y participating in ko a l a c o n s e r va t i o n a c t i v i t i e s a n d 17 % p a r t i c i p ate i n ot h e r conservation activities that help koalas i n d i re ct l y. A f u r t h e r 4 5 % o f re s p o n d e nt s were interested in par ticipating in suitable volunteering opportunities to support Koala conservation.

The organisation is now seeking the active hands-on involvement of members by encouraging them to record their sightings of this threatened species.

Sightings D a t a o n koala sightings is consolidated through NSW BioNet, a comprehensive repositor y for biodiversit y data.

WEATHER WATCH Last Friday, 21 March, saw the arrival of muchneeded rainfalls in north-east Victoria after very dry conditions since the end of December.

Wangaratta received 48.6mms, Yarrawonga 39mms, Albury, 38.4mms, Benalla 27mms, Mt Hotham 74mms – which was the wettest for late March since 1985.

Lake Eildon recorded 78mms, the wettest March day for 75 years.

Across the border into NSW, Coonabarabran recorded 28.4mms, taking the March total to 67mms, whilst Dubbo recorded 36.6mms after no rain since late February.

During last Saturday evening a most unusual development led to heavy rainfalls and thunderstorms of 66.6mms at Birdsville and 90mms at Urandangie, the wettest for March since 2019; considering both places have had their warmest-ever March in over 110 years of records.

Despite the record rainfalls at Townsville, the Warrego and Maranoa district in Queensland has been very dry the last two months. This district was also very dry during February and March of both 1918 and 1974, when Townsville had very high rainfalls. We certainly had high rainfalls in Victoria during April and May, peaking at mid May with major floods. A week later, in May 1974. Sydney was hit by flood rains.

The long spell of notably warm-to-hot days in Victoria has ended, but will return by early April with daily maxima near 33 degrees before the next spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms during the second week of April.

Perth, during the last few days, has been having it’ hottest spell for late March since 1985, which did lead to hot days to 33 degrees by early April in our region and then moderate rainfalls sporadically to early June 1985.

Coonabarabran was saturated with 158mms during August 1985.

CHOPPER MISSIONS Coolah to Newcastle Around 3pm Sunday, 23 March, a Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to a single motorcycle accident on the Black Stump Way, approximately 10 kilometres north of Coolah.

A female in her 60s had suffered multiple injuries.

The patient was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and the helicopter’s critical-care medical team before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

on Friday ,21 March, where a man aged in his 20s had sustained chest injuries in a bull-riding event at a rodeo.

Driver Reviver: providing a lifesaving cuppa For over 25 years, Coonabarabran’s Driver Reviver has been a welcome sight for weary travellers, offering a friendly break, a hot drink, and a vital reminder to rest before continuing their journey.

by MOLLY SHANNON The Coonabarabran Driver Reviver has been operating for over 25 years – and is still as successful as ever. In 2002, Bev Rayner and the Girl Guides took over the program from t he L ion s C lu b a nd have been running the initiative successfully ever since.

Driver Reviver was founded in 1989 and h a s g r oup s a l l over Australia, with round 80 operating in NSW. T he i n itiative was e s t a bl i s h e d t o h e l p combat driver fatigue, an issue which is still just as prevalent today, with around 20 to 30 per cent of road accidents in NSW caused by fatigue.

“The whole idea is to get people to stop for at least 10 minutes –15 is better – and that enables them to get back on the road, refreshed, without being tense,” said Driver Reviver co-ordinator, Lynne Abbot.

“ T h at ’s one of the reasons why we don’t put a lid on our coffee, because this way they’ve got to stop and have it with us.”

Driver Reviver operates over busy traffic periods, school holidays a nd publ ic hol id ays , with schedules varying between towns based on volunteer availability.

T h i s p a s t h ol id ay season, Coonabarabran Driver Reviver welcomed 1,899 visitors over 20 days, with the help of 120 volunteers, including Girl Guides, h igh school students and their families.

Dr iver R ev iver is sponsored by A rnotts and Bushells, however, un l i ke most Dr iver Reviver services, Coonabarabran Driver Reviver also provides a warm cup of soup to travellers during winter.

The Driver Reviver is a much appreciated s e r v i c e , w i t h m a ny visitors leaving donations.

“Most drivers definitely do appreciate Driver Rev iver,” M rs Abbott shared.

“You can tell with the way that people respond to you, they come back and talk to you…and people are generous with their donations. About 90 per cent of people donate.

“All the money that’s donated into the town, stays in the town – and stays with the youth of the town.”

Donated funds primarily benefit local youth programs – suppor ti ng awa rds nights at local schools, Girl Guides, the Children’s Library, as well as L ea rning for L i fe, wh ich assists students with transport, uniforms and books.

Perhaps the biggest pa r t of the Dr iver R ev iver i s t he k i nd volu nt eers that help keep it going.

The previous holiday, volunteers donated 160 hours of their time to

serve weary drivers on their journey.

Vo l u n t e e r , J a n e t Skimmings f inds the experience rewarding. “ I l i ke t o work for the Driver Reviver. It’s quite sociable and its interesting to see who comes through the town – I’ve met quite a few nice people,” she said.

“But I’d like to see more people to volunteer and help support the service. “ Each shift requires two volunteers, w ith three shi fts r unning per day.

“We’re always in need of a volunteers,” Janet said.

L y n ne A b b o t a l s o thoroughly enjoys v olu nt e e r i n g at t he Driver Reviver. “ I enjoy the so cia l aspect of it and knowing that I ’m helpi ng someone,” she said. “ H av i ng bei ng i n Guides for over 30 years and the Guiding family, it’s great to see younger people coming along and

getting involved.”

Coonabarabran CWA Hall unveils fresh new look After months of hard work from local trades, the Coonabarabran CWA hall has a new look – and a few members gathered to honour the occasion.

“It feels wonderful, the

trades did their job well.”

The hall has received a fresh coat of paint, along with improvements to the roof and windows, giving the entire building a bright facelift coming into the new year.

W hile plans are in place to paint the railings and install a new front

door, the majority of the renovations are complete, setting a positive tone for the year ahead.

“We’re in quite a good financial situation,” Mrs Chapman said.

“During the drought we struggled, until the ‘ Meat Tasting ’ fundraising opportunity came

along. “ We received some funding through that, which we’ve been able to build on, while hiring out the hall also provides a good source of income.

“Now, we’re looking forward to next year and seeing what it brings.”

T h is week i n the Yuluwirri babies learning environment we have been developing our finemotor skills while using the shredded paper from the office. We mixed flour and water together in the outside experience tub and added the shredded paper.

B abies were able to use their fingers to manipulate the paper – squeezing, mixing and squash i ng the paper into balls. We used the little bowls and plates to push the mixture into with our hands, some making handprints in the mixture. Then we put the mixture out in the sun to dry to see what happens.

During Thursday’s class at Yuluwirri 3-5 y e a r s , t h e c h i ld r e n engaged in imaginative and collaborative play inspired by their discussions about the rodeo at the Coonabarabran Show.

Using the animal hoppers, they created their own bull-riding arena, demonstrating creativity and problemsolving skills.

D u r i ng thei r play, the children engaged in meaningful discussions about safety, recognising

that only one rider is allowed in a real rodeo at a time. They applied this rule to their game, ensuring fairness and taking turns respectfully.

Additionally, they worked t ogether t o set up a grandstand using chairs,

patiently waiting for their turn to be the bull rider.

This experience showcased their ability to negotiate roles, follow agreed-upon rules and engage in cooperative play.

Kyle loves anything Rodeo and enjoys his imaginative play riding the bull.

Coonabarabran Public C P S s t udent s h ad their dancing shoes on for the disco, while the Personalised Learning Plan and barbecue was a huge success. Parents enjoyed a catchup with staff and everyone loved the sausage sandwiches.

Then, as the crowd dispersed, everyone got their smoothest moves into action and danced up a storm. There were awards for Best Groover, Dancing Star, Dance Legend and Super Star.

Inaugural Matt Dewson Mental Health Cup a huge success The Baradine Magpies Rugby League Football Club hosted the inaugural Matt Dewson Mental Health Cup on Saturday, 22 March, bringing together teams and communities in support of an important cause.

The event, held in memory of Matt Dewson, aimed to raise awareness of mental health and suicide prevention, with all gate proceeds going towards mental health initiatives.

B a ra d i n e M a g p i e s S e n i o r Rugby League Football Club p resident, Ad r ian Wo r r e l l d e s c r i b e d t h e d a y as a resounding success and promised an even bigger event in Wee Waa next year.

“It was a fantastic day of foot y, communit y spi r it and an i mpo r tant rem i nde r that # i t s n o t w e a k t o s p e a k ,” M r Worrell said.

“We had great support from the teams, the supporters and the wider communit y – and it’s clear that this event will continue to grow.”

The day kicked off with the L a d i e s L e a g u e Ta g m a t c h bet ween Baradine and Wee Waa, with Baradine taking the honours 36-0.

Builders appointed for new $105 million Moree Hospital A new $105 million Moree Hospital is one step closer, with the state government announcing the appointment of the main works contractor.

The next stage of the hospital development is expected to begin in coming months.

Following a competitive tender process, Hutchinson Builders was awarded the works contract.

The project received planning approval in January 2025, which is a key step in finalising the planning and design phase.

Part of the redeveloped facility will include a new acute services building which will consist of an emergency department, operating theatres, medical imaging, a birthing and inpatient unit, pathology and new main entry for the new hospital building.

Architectural plans show the ground floor of the new hospital building will include a five-bay emergency department, plus additional rooms. The radiology department will consist of spaces for x-ray, ultrasound, mammography and CT imaging. The pathology area will also be downstairs.

The first floor will include a surgical unit, consisting of an operating room, endoscopy suite and patient bays. A birthing unit and a ward consisting of one and two-bed rooms is also upstairs.

The Moree Hospital will continue to operate during construction as a district hospital, providing care for the Moree and

surrounding communities, and will remain networked to Tamworth Hospital for access to specialist services, the NSW government said in its announcement.

Extensive consultation with staff and the community has been carried out throughout planning for the redevelopment to ensure the new hospital building creates a

welcoming environment that reflects the heritage and culture of the region.

A language reference group is working to inform the inclusion of Aboriginal language and storytelling into signage and wayfinding into the redevelopment, while planning is underway for arts projects which will be included in the

new acute services building.

Minister for Regional Health Ryan Park said the government has reached a significant milestone in the delivery of the redevelopment which will deliver enhanced healthcare facilities for Moree and surrounding communities.

“The Moree Hospital redevelopment will provide staff, patients,

“All hospital services will continue to operate during construction, which follows significant planning and design work in collaboration with staff, stakeholders and the community.”

‘We are going to find you and lock you up’: Young offenders warned Young offenders stealing cars or holding the elderly at knifepoint are being put on notice with dedicated police officers posted in hotspots to tackle a surge in regional crime.

Launching the police operation in Dubbo, which has experienced an uptick in juvenile crime, NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb said up to 60 officers would be dispatched for dedicated units in the north and west of the state.

Their mission is to address an escalation of violence in offenders between 11 and 16 years of age.

"It's about reducing fear in the community, nobody deserves to be frightened in their own home and in regional NSW that has been the case, it has to stop," Comm Webb said last week.

Deputy Commissioner Paul Pisanos said high-visibility police operations would try to stop crime from happening in the first place, but he also had a tough message for anyone caught offending.

"This is about sending a clear message to these young criminals that we are going to find you and lock you up," Dep Comm Pisanos said.

Police Minister Yasmin Catley told parliament the operation would focus on recidivists and ringleaders, as well as diverting young offenders from criminal behaviour.

It is being rolled out in areas such as Moree, Tamworth, Tweed Heads, Dubbo, Orange, Kempsey, Taree and Newcastle.

Over 25 children under the age of 16 had been arrested in the past year since "post and boast" laws penalising offenders for airing their crimes on social media were implemented, Ms Catley said.

But NSW Nationals leader Dugald Saunders said crime sprees would not abate unless tougher legislation was on the books.

"Our local police always feel it's a bit of a revolving door," he told AAP. "They are arresting young people and a

couple of days later those young people are out again committing the same or very similar serious offences."

Mr Saunders criticised changes to bail laws that were before parliament for a

three-year extension, saying they needed to go further.

The state Labor government introduced the controversial changes in 2024, making it harder for children aged 14 and older to be released on serious charges while out on bail for similar offences.

Data has since revealed a significant rise in the bail refusal rate for young people in cases covered by the laws.

Legal bodies and advocacy groups such as the NSW Bar Association and the Aboriginal Legal Service opposed the government's changes, fearing they would jail more vulnerable children and do little to reduce crime in the long-term.

Opposition police spokesman Paul Toole said the changing nature of crimes necessitated a hard-line stance.

"Youth crime has always been there but communities are saying it is the worst it has ever been over the past two years," he said.

Police appeal for public assistance after aggravated break and enter at Moree motel Police news

Police are appealing for public assistance as investigations continue into an aggravated break and enter in Moree.

About 2:15am on Wednesday, March 19, police were called to a motel in Amaroo Drive following reports of a break-in.

On arrival officers attached to New England Police District were told two males – armed with a knife - broke into a room and confronted the occupants, demanding keys.

The males took the keys and left, stealing an MG station wagon parked outside before driving off, crashing through a perimeter fence.

The occupants of the room – a man and woman both aged 73 – were not physically injured.

A crime scene was established and forensically examined.

Officers conducted patrols of the town and the stolen MG was involved in a short

pursuit with police before being terminated due to safety concerns.

As investigations continue, police are seeking to identify the two males who may be able to assist officers with their inquiries.

One of the males is described as being about 175cm tall and wearing a black long sleeve shirt, black pants, and a face covering.

The second male is described as wearing a black jacket, black shorts and a face covering.

Police are urging anyone with CCTV, dashcam footage or information about this incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Body found in search for missing woman at Lightning Ridge A body has been found in the search for a 78-year-old woman who was reported missing to Central North Police District.

The woman was reported missing on Saturday, March 15 in the Lightning Ridge area.

In an update on the matter last week, NSW Police said while the body is yet to be formally identified, it is believed to be that of the missing woman.

Man charged with allegedly stealing multiple vehicles across Moree Police have charged a man with pursuit and motor vehicle theft offences after he allegedly stole multiple vehicles across Moree last week About 6.30am on Tuesday, March 18, police were patrolling the Gywdir Highway when they located two ATVs allegedly stolen from nearby rural properties earlier in the week.

After locating the vehicles, officers attached to New England Police District sighted a Toyota utility – also allegedly stolen from a rural property – driving away from the scene.

Police directed the driver to stop; however, when they allegedly failed to stop a pursuit

was initiated.

During the pursuit – which travelled 70km through the Pallamallawa and Crooble areas – police were assisted by officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Rural Crime Prevention Team, members of the public and a plane.

The pursuit however was terminated after police lost sight of the utility.

Following inquiries, police located the allegedly stolen vehicle in a shed on a Pallamallawa property about 9am the same day.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man nearby after he was seen allegedly running from the scene and hiding in bushland.

He was taken to Moree Police Station where he was charged with two counts of steal motor vehicle, drive conveyance taken without consent of owner, police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly and drive motor vehicle while licence suspended.

The man was refused bail and appeared before Inverell Local Court on Wednesday, March 19.

“This year I expect these Victorian processors to travel north even earlier by late March/early April due to more processor capacity in Victoria and NSW, and further herd liquidation.

“We are about to go into a staggered rebuild phase where prices for heifers go back to a premium if good rain comes to the southern Australia in July. If we don’t get the rain, liquidation will stop, and the herd will hover in a holding pattern for six months.

“The rebuild will start in Queensland, move into northern NSW and by the end of this year and early next year, southern NSW and Victoria will be in a rebuild, resulting in higher prices.

“We are expecting the steer kill to subside over the next six months – add that to the female kill and suddenly supply is getting tight. The higher prices from this rebuild are potentially coming this year and will carry into next year.”

Grinding beef is at record levels of 385 USc/lb and Australian imported prices are tipped to move higher on the back of rocketing domestic prices and Brazilian product becoming uncompetitive due to tariffs.

“Price rises in America on all beef cuts are so beneficial to us – if consumers cannot pay the price for cuts, they go into the 90CL pack (90 per cent lean meat). The higher the 90CL price goes, the less US exports and the more Australia becomes the player in those markets,” Mr Quilty said.

The makeup of Australian feedlots is changing with less Wagyu cattle on feed and mid-fed programs switching to larger short fed programs of 110-120 days.

There is a record number of Australian cattle on feed at 1.45 million head with that forecast to

Mr Quilty said the long fed Wagyu market had been challenging with marble score 8-9 falling in the US from US$53/lb in June 2022 to US$28.50/lb in February 2025. Australian Wagyu prices in the US have seen tenderloins fall in value by 33 per cent, ribeyes by 48 per cent and striploins by 57 per cent.

“In the US, Australia Wagyu F1 marble score 3-4 and 4-5 now trade at a discount to Prime, Certified Angus, Choice and just above Select – equating to a 77 per cent fall in price,” he said.

“Wagyu marble score 6-7 plus still sit at a significant premium in the market. Australian Wagyu numbers on feed have come off a peak of 306,000 in 2022 to 275,000 head and at the moment Australian domestic supply is outstripping demand.

“We have unsold Wagyu F1 cattle, poor quality cattle and it will be a year before we start to see some of the old premiums that we are used to. Poor quality Wagyu F1 steers will trend at a discount to Angus.”

Australian Wagyu marble score 4-5 peaked in the US market at AUD$131/kg in April 2022 and is now at AUD$30kg, sitting below Prime, Certified Angus and Choice.

Good quality Australian Wagyu F1 feeder steers reached a high of 1100c/kg liveweight in 2022 and on today’s spot market are 420c/ kg liveweight compared to 400c/ kg for Angus feeder steers and 355c/kg for flatback feeder steers.

There are golden times ahead for the nation’s cattle producers with a “new norm” of 630c/kg liveweight for feeder steers next year as the markets enter a seven-year period of stability.

Market analyst Simon Quilty, Global AgriTrends, delivered his price forecast out to 2028 at the recent Pasture Agronomy Service conference held in southern NSW. Mr Quilty forecast 2026 average prices to reach 630c/kg liveweight for feeder steers, 510c/kg LW for Jap Ox, 420c/kg LW for cows and for the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) to peak at 1277c/kg carcase weight.

This would be up on the strengthening 2025 prices of 490c/kg for feeder steers, 410c/ kg for Jap Ox, 325c/kg for cows and an ECYI of 954c/kg carcase weight.

Prices have been tipped to remain elevated through 2027 but begin trending downwards in 2028 with feeder steers slipping 80c/kg LW as the national herd rebuild grinds to a halt.

Overall, the cattle market has recorded a five per cent fall in March due to Cyclone Alfred closing major ports, with Meat and Livestock Australia quoting yearling steers trading at 370c/kg, feeders averaging 356c/kg, heavy steers at 342c/kg, heifers 299c/kg and cows at 284c/kg.

Mr Quilty expects the market to move upwards in late April for feeder steers to 536c/kg by September.

“A good quality Angus feeder steer is 410-420c/kg liveweight today in the market and lot feeders are willing to pay 420-430c/kg now for forward cattle,” he said.

“In terms of cows, we are still talking around 440c/kg by the end of this year (up from 276c/kg in southern Queensland), driven by exceptional price levels for grinding meat at a time when we hit the herd rebuild.”

Mr Quilty has the nominal yearling carcase weight indicator entering a seven-year period of stable prices this year until 2032, off the back of a decade long transitory period when prices rose 35 per cent since 2015.

“Input costs have run ahead but by the start of 2027 to 2032, those input costs will be in line with your returns.”

Processing capacity in NSW, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland has risen to 3600 cattle per day, off the back of the herd liquidation for at least seven quarters.

The herd liquidation has resulted in a 60-80c/kg LW discount on heifers relative to feeder steers right across Queensland. Heifers are trading at a 70c/kg discount in NSW and 90c/kg in Victoria.

Mr Quilty said northern processors would be squeezed as young cattle flow from the southern states to Queensland and older

Transport for NSW will start work this month to improve safety on a stretch of the Gwydir Highway about 51 kilometres west of Moree.

Work at Browns Creek will involve widening the road and improvements to two kilometres of pavement as well as repairs to five culverts.

A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the Gwydir Highway is a significant east-west link for northern NSW and this work will make the road safer for all users while reducing ongoing maintenance costs.

“It will help make our regional road network safer and deliver a stronger, more resilient section of the highway,” the spokesperson said.

“The pavement at this section is very narrow and in need of regular heavy patching and other maintenance work, so these improvements will help reduce ongoing maintenance costs and the disruption from road works for all

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) has welcomed the appointment of well-respected Mungindi grain grower Andrew Earle as the organisation’s newest board director.

Mr Earle’s appointment was announced by Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). He steps into the directorship role vacated by South Australian grain grower and pork producer Sharon Starick, who was appointed GRDC board chair in September.

The Queensland-based grower is well-known across the grains sector having previously served as a board member of Grains Australia, and as deputy chair of Grain Producers Australia.

He has also been a staunch supporter of grains research having regularly hosted farming

Mr Earle joins the GRDC board along with Mrs Starick, chairperson (South Australia grain grower and pork producer), Robert (Bob) Nixon, deputy chairperson (Western Australian grain grower), Kellie Benda, director (Western Australia), Shaun Coffey, director (Queensland), Richard Heath, director (Queensland/New South Wales), Natalie Sommerville, director (South Australia), and Belinda (Bindi) Turner, director (New South Wales).

GRDC is one of 15 Rural Research and Development Corporations (RDCs) responsible for planning, investing in and overseeing research, development and extension for 25 leviable grain crops.

Its purpose is to invest in RD&E to create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers.

Major overhaul of supermarket sector needed: NSW Farmers An investigation by Australia’s competition watchdog has found the future of locally-grown fruit and vegetables is under threat unless major changes are made to the nation’s supermarket giants.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released its final report into the nation’s major supermarkets, finding they increased their aver-

age product margins over the past five financial years and appeared among the most profitable supermarket businesses globally.

The report recommended greater price transparency, a stronger Food and Grocery Code, and more fairness for farmers.

NSW Farmers vice president Bec Reardon said many farmers felt vindicated by the findings after

decades of pain from the nation’s powerful supermarkets.

“Farmers have seen prices go up at the checkout and come down at the farmgate, and our major supermarkets can no longer hide behind excuses for their disgustingly huge profits,” she said. “These giants are world-leader on profits, which ultimately come from shoppers’ pockets and farmers’ incomes. Unfair

behaviour is behind these super profits, and it’s pushing the people that grow our food out of business at a rate we’ve never seen before.

“With a third of vegetable growers thinking about leaving the industry, who is going to grow the food to feed Aussie families when all our farmers are forced out of business?"

A crackdown on unfair behaviour

within the grocery sector was long overdue, Mrs Reardon said, with the Australian government urged to take swift action.

“Everywhere you look the cost of living is a major issue and I heard this week that food charities are now seeing double-income families turn to them for help. Politicians must act on this report, and fast,” Mrs Reardon said.
