A numbers’ game: Golf Club Bingo calls out 40 years Everyone knows (and loves) Bingo – it’s hard not to with the tense environment, the thrill of getting all the numbers, then jumping up and shouting “BINGO!” Victorious and smug, knowing you got there first, despite the odds.

by MOLLY SHANNON This addictive game has a special place in Coonabarabran, with the Coonabarabran Golf C lub’s we ek ly Bi ng o session celebrating its 4 0 t h ye a r. I n 19 8 5 , members of the Lady G ol fers A ssociates founded Bingo at the club – and it has been going strong since then.

Anyone is welcome to join, but you do need to be a Golf Club member.

While numbers these days aren’t what they used to be, there are sti l l some loya l ists – one of whom is Bev Chapman.

Bev is the ‘Caller’ at Bingo, a position she has enjoyed for many years.

Wa n t i n g t o c h a t with Bev about Bingo’s upcoming anniversary and how it has changed over the years its been running, I made my way to her home. Unsu re whether t o k no ck or r ing, B ev than k fully called me in before I had to decide.

I s at dow n on t he lounge across f rom her, i n a c o z y r o om that offered welcomed warmth from the cold July weather.

C u r iou s ab out her jou r ney t o be c om i ng Bingo’s voice, I asked how it all started.

Bev originally started as just a participant due t o work c omm itment taking up most of her time. However, over the years she slowly began to volunteer, taking on numerous roles before becoming the Caller.

“I didn’t get involved at the start, I came in a couple of years after Cat Jones, but I didn’t call – I only made sandwiches with Marge [ Walden], then I got promoted up to being a caller,” Bev said.

“I’ve been more or less involved with it on and off for over 40 years. To start with, I didn’t do very much because I was working.”

Despite her years of experience in the role of Caller, Bev curiously doesn’t have any favourite ‘Bingo Lingo’ (Legs 11 anyone?).

But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t find the role any less enjoyable.

Bev said Bingo hasn’t c h a n g e d v e r y mu c h throughout the years, except that – much to my dismay – they no longer use the lottery spinner.

Instead, they opt for a more modern electronic machine that displays

numbers generated by a computer.

Bingo is held at the C o on aba r abr a n G ol f Club every Wednesday from 11am to 1.30pm, with a break between 12-12.30.

There’s always food on offer, and Bev brings a freshly baked cake each week – her “little contribution.”

P r izes va r y from week to week – from chocolates to biscuits to cleaning products to $10 club vouchers.

T here a re a lso the jackpot prizes, which d raw in people, w ith w i n n i n g s f r om $ 8 0 $100.

Bingo has become a place for people to come and connect with each other, to socialise and have some fun. This is the main draw for them. “ We a l l h ave a laugh and we all make mistakes – I make plenty of them ever y week, I call the wrong number sometimes and get yelled at, but that’s neither here nor there, that’s the fun of it,” Bev said.

“I think it’s just the company [is what keeps us coming] – most of us women that are there haven’t got a partner… it means you can get t ogether a nd h ave a nice day.

“We have a laugh. Oh we have fun!”

Bev said her memories f r om B i ng o a r e “ t o o many to count ”, with many people having left their mark. “ We had a machine that had a vacuum and Cat turned it on the first day we started, and we lost the ball,” Bev said.

“The ball shot straight out because Cat forgot to shut the top of it.”

Spending time with

B ev, gave me a newfound appreciation for just how wonder f u l volunteers and community groups are.

Despite many of the or i g i n a l p e ople who

started Bingo in Coona no longer with us, the game still perseveres and stays strong.

Still, Bev is unsure whether younger generations will

c ont i nue t he Bi ngo tradition. “ I don’t know what w i l l h app e n whe n I can’t do it anymore. The majority of us are well in our 60s or over, you

know – retiring age. “ There are a couple of you ng ones that come when they’re not working. It varies, but most of them are middle aged.”

Bloomfest funding secured Warrumbungle Shire Council has announced that Bloomfest will return to Coonabarabran this September, with funding secured for the next three years.

T h e O p e n St r e et s Program suppor ts councils to temporarily close streets and t ransfo r m them i nto vib rant, people friendly spaces.

The aim is to boost community c o n n e c t i o n , encourage economic act i v it y a nd c reate welcoming places for both locals and visitors.

The festival will return to D a l g a r n o St re et, Coonabarabran, t h i s Se pte m b e r, transforming the area into a lively celebration of local art, live music, food and fun.

Highlighting the natural beauty of the Warrumbungle region and the creativity of its residents, Bloomfest will provide opportunities for local ar tists, performers, businesses and community groups to connect with the wider community “Building on the success of last year’s spring celebration, this year’s event will feature exciting new elements

Elders’ vision comes to life For a project that has been years in the making, Maaruma-Li Aboriginal Corporation Aboriginal Medical Service (Maaruma-Li AMS) in Coonabarabran is one step closer to opening, with its community-led board hopeful the final fit-out will be completed within the next few months.

M a a r u m a- L i A M S chairperson, Paige D owd c on f i r me d t he i nt er na l renovations were progressing steadily, although no f irm completion date had been announced.

The building, located in the former RTA premises in Little Timor Street, has been gutted and rebuilt to a f loor plan negotiated with owners of the building – Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council (CL A LC) – and approved b y Wa r r u m bu n g l e Council.

T he new ser v ice w ill open w ith th ree consultation rooms, a waiting room, kitchen, office space and accessible toilets, and has been designed with future growth in mind. “ Maaruma-Li A MS will have ever y thing an Aboriginal Medical Ser v ice prov ides and what the commu n ity needs,” Ms Dowd said. “ We w i l l o u t g r o w that building very fast, but for the time being, that’s where we’re going to start.”

Maaruma-Li, which me a n s “ t o he a l , f i x , make better” in Gamilaraay language, was named by Board member Beryl Dowd, a nd represents the service’s core purpose.

by C L A L C i n 2 0 21 , when a group of local Aborig inal Elders outlined a clear need for access to culturallys a fe pr i m a r y he a lt h care and programs in town. “ It was ou r Elders who said we needed this.

The Elders advised the CLALC that we didn’t just want an AMS, the community needed it,” Ms Dowd said.

“We want to heal our community.”

Ms Dowd said Maaruma-Li A MS pla n ned t o del iver a ra nge of hol istic, c u l t u r a l l y- i n f o r m e d pr i ma r y hea lth c a re services and programs when it opens its doors.

T h is w i l l i nclude

drug and alcohol support, mental health care, chronic disease m a n a g eme nt , s o c i a l emot ion a l wel l b ei n g prog rams, as well as fami ly suppor t, nutrition and cultural health programs. “ We ’ l l h av e A b o r i g i n a l c u lt u r a l advisors to complement our Aboriginal health workers and other allied health professionals,” she said.

“We plan to provide ‘culturally-safe holistic health care’ that embeds culture as part of healing.”

Transport to and from appoi ntments, both locally and regionally, is also a priority, with Maaruma-Li A MS apply ing for f und ing to ensure Elders and p e ople w it h c h r on i c conditions or disability ca n be of fered equa l access to care, especially if they can’t leave home. “ We’ ll also prov ide Medicare bulk-billing services.

“No one will be turned away, but Aborig inal c ommu n it y members will be our priority.”

W h i le sig n i f ica nt prog ress has been made, the journey to this point has not been easy.

“We thought funding support to establish a new Aboriginal Medical Service would have been much easier to access, particularly with the alarming increased r a t e s o f m o r t a l i t y, sick ne s s , i nc r e a si ng rates of chronic healthrelated diagnosis, and statistics,” Ms Dowd said. “ We h av e r e a c he d o ut t o mu lt i pl e k e y stakeholders and gover nment bod ies – from g rassroots through to ministers and, unfortunately, it’s been a very challenging pr o cess w ith ma ny d isappointments and constant red tape. “ There are long processes and timeframes involved.

Just getting everything i n place t o be come registered took over a year.”

T he setbacks have been felt deeply by t h e c o m mu n i t y a n d

the B oard, who have worked tirelessly, and voluntarily, to bring the service to fruition. “ T here’s been a lot of frustration, letdown and setbacks, but we keep putting one foot in front of the other. We’re soldiering on and we will not give up.”

For M s D owd , t he mission is personal.

“I’ve done this from my heart and soul. This is my home, where I was born, and raised.

My family are here,” she said.

“I’ve volunteered for almost five years. No wages and insufficient funding to do it with.

Despite my own h e a l t h m at t e r s a n d disabilities. Not many people do that for community these days.” “ We ne e d t o c ome together as one, and h e l p e a c h o t h e r, s o we can get this A MS opened.”

Ms Dowd br ings more tha n 3 0 yea rs’ combi ned ex per ience across the health sector, including qualifications and experience in I nd igenou s t r au m a and recovery practice a nd i n formed ca re, Aborig inal health and community de velopment , s p or t s science, mental health, drug and alcohol, community engagement and sexual health.

Ms Dowd is backed by a passionate Board that i ncludes E lders and professionals with de c ade s of f r ont l i ne health experience.

“Margaret Leslie and Beryl Dowd worked at C o onaba rabra n a nd Baradine Hospitals for over 40 years each, and C a s ey D owd worke d at Coonabarabran Hospital as well.

“Tracy Gray, K ay Dundas and Tom Brydson also bring a wealth of community knowledge and experience, extensive ha nds- on experience, and formal qualifications.

“Combined, the Board members bring lived experiences, respect and hea r t to the Board.”

During NA IDOC Week , the emotiona l weight of the project

was clear, when local Aborig inal Elders a nd B o a r d memb er s Marg ie L eslie, B er yl Dowd and Uncle Casey D owd spoke t o the Coonabarabran Times about what MaarumaLi AMS means to them.

“I love my community, I love everyone in it, and this is why we are doing this – so everyone in the community will benefit,” Uncle Casey said. “ Pa ige has worked so hard on this. People don’t appreciate everything she’s done.

But it’s going to blossom soon, and then they’ll see,” Beryl said. “ S he ’s b e e n pu s h , push , push i ng – the only one here from the start, and she’s never stopped,” Margie said.

T h e E l d e r s emphasised that the ser v ice would not only benefit A bor ig i na l people i n C o on a ba r a br a n , but will improve access to culturally-safe health care across the whole c o m mu n i t y a n d t h e Warrumbungle region.

“We’ll bring services to town that people just haven’t had access to,” Uncle Casey said. “ We’re a ll work ing towards the same goal.”

While there have been Aborig inal Medical Ser v ices in nea rby towns for decades, Ms D owd s a id t he lo c a l community was 20 to 30 years behind, which was sadly evident in the statistics. “ We wa nt t o lower the mortality rate and help our mob who are already ill and educate others to prevent illness,” Ms Dowd said. “ Maaruma-Li A MS mu s t o p e n , a nd t he sooner the better – the reality is, we are experiencing a health crisis and have been for many years. “ We n e e d u r g e n t help or there will be no more Elders left in our community and our fami ly members w i l l continue to suffer, and the younger people will not grow old enough to become Elders.”

Do you have a nickname? Dolly.

How did you come to l ive in Coonabarabran? I was born here, as were my parents.

Where would people recognise your face? Many committees, rugby, school, daycare educator.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Photographer or lifeguard.

What’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had? I love the job I have now, educating the next generation. They do not judge and accept everyone for who they are. They are a delight to be around.

W h e re i s yo u r g o -t o s p o t i n Coonabarabran? Don’t really have one as I don’t really go out, but I do love the Royal for its atmosphere and to dine, the Acacia for special occasions.

Best thing about living in Coonabarabran? Family and friends and the support networks.

If you could pick a decade to visit in a time machine, what would it be? Back to the 70’s or 80’s.

What event in Coonabarabran do you look fo r wa rd to most e a ch ye a r ? I o rg a n i s e t h e Coonabarabran Chr istmas S p e c ta c u l a r a n d I l ove t h e atmosphere it brings.

What are the top three things on your bucket list? I’m boring as I don’t really have a bucket list.

If you could have anyone around for dinner who would it be and what would you cook? My late husband, kids and grandkids.

We would just have a good oldfashioned barbecue with all the trimmings.

What/who do you think is your spirit animal? Dolphin.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given? Treat others like you want to be treated and just be nice. Never take anything for granted, as your life can change in an instant.

If you could instantly be an expert in any field, what would it be?

Travel photography, so they can pay me to travel and take pics.

How do you wind down after a long day? Sit on my verandah and have a pot of tea. See, I am boring.

What is your favourite place to visit on a road trip? In Australia, probably The Entrance for the memories it holds for me, and overseas New Zealand.

I f you cou l d swap l i ves w i t h anyone for a day, who would it be? Nobody really, boring again.

If you could make one rule that ever yone in the world had to follow, what would it be? I will be hounded for this one, but I think ever yone capable should be made work for their Centrelink benefits. Eg., community service, help by shopping, mowing or just chatting to older people to help them stay in their homes longer, even mowing/gardening in public places or joining a committee of some kind.

What is the most valuable life lesson you have learned so far?

I have a couple of life lessons... don’t believe that people will always do the right thing by you as they say they will, as they don’t. Live, love and be grateful.

I believe in karma, so what goes around comes around.

Council unveils Swimming Pool Draft Masterplan Warrumbungle Shire Council is inviting community feedback on the Draft Masterplan and Cost Estimate Summary for the Coonabarabran Swimming Pool, now on public exhibition for 28 days. Submissions will remain open for a minimum of 42 days.

The documents outline a proposed vision for a future upg rade of the Coonabarabran Swimming Pool.

W hile funding for construction has not yet been secured, once the Masterplan is adopted, the project w i l l be considered shovel ready – meaning Council will be in a strong position to apply for grants and exter na l f und i ng for redevelopment works.

Council received f u nd i ng th rough the N S W G o v e r n m e n t ’s Resources for Regions Round 9 program to undertake the Masterplan, detailed design, and construction planning for the site. The plan has been shaped

by site investigations, stakeholder engagement and community c o n s u l t a t i o n , including input from the C oonaba rabra n Swimming Pool Adv isor y C omm itt ee and a recent community survey.

The Advisory Committee identified the following key priorities: • Construction of an eight-lane 25-metre pool with universal access

ramp; • Construction of a toddler pool and splash pad, featuring a tipping bucket, jets, and sprayers; and • Construction of new, universally desig ned amenities with familyfriendly changerooms.

To help the community better understand the proposal, Council will host two c ommu n it y d r o p - i n s e s s i o n s at the C oonaba rabra n

RFS launches mobile catering truck to support volunteers The Rural Fire Service (RFS) has launched an exciting new initiative to support its volunteers – a catering truck designed to provide mobile catering at major fires across the state.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY T he idea for the mobile catering truck took roots at the RFS State Championships in 2022 at Wollongong, where crews from all c or ner s of t he s t at e converged t o enjoy fr iend ly competition, hone their emergency skills and share experiences from their respective areas.

RFS catering br igades a lso came t o g et her t o c omp et e for the best cater ing brigade. “ T he pu r pose of it is t o feed the troops that are there for the State Championships, so we’ve made it a little competition amongst the brigades themselves,” explained Vicki Mathews, local c at er i ng c apt a i n for the RFS. Vicki, who won the c at er i n g honou r s i n 2018, has joined forces with two other winners from the Hawkesbury Br igade t o ta ke on roles as marshals and c o o r d i n at o r s at t h e State Championships.

This position has given them a plat form t o listen to the concerns of other catering brigades.

teams.

“RFS catering br i g ad e s d o n’t h av e ma ny faci l ities t o actually cater from,” Vicki said. “ T hey ’r e e x p e c t e d to feed multiple p er s on nel – s o fou r, five, six hundred a day, depending on what the incident is at the time.

“A n d t h e y c a n b e cooking out of a little domestic kitchen, they could be cooking out on the field, they could be anywhere.”

T h is spa rked the i d e a o f a d e d i c at e d catering truck, i n it i a l ly e nv i s i o n e d a s a c ont a i ner, now realised as an eightmetre-long vehicle equipped to the highest safety reg ulations in the country.

C o n t a i n i n g f r idges, f reezers, a n oven , c o ok t op, g r i l l , microwave, wash bay and more, it’s designed to handle nearly every cater ing need and is able to function entirely off-grid.

F unding for the project came from g rants, wh ich was money donated towards the 2019-2020 bushfires.

“The RFS has to be happy with the funding, so we’ve been lucky – I thin k they could see the need for it,” Vicki explained.

T he catering truck

is based out of the RFS Logistics Centre i n Glenden n i ng, a nd d ispat ched t o f i re zones across the state as required during any natural disaster.

The truck can b e f u l ly op er at ion a l within 30 minutes of arrival, a significant improvement over the 12 t o 24 hou rs previously required – especially when crews are already exhausted.

It is set to become a integral part of the RFS, enhancing support for crews through quicker response times a nd complementing existing wel fa re i n itiatives such as mental health resources and critical incident support services for volunteers.

Vicki joined the RFS in 2013 and quickly rose to the role of catering captain by 2014, where she developed a strong personal commitment to supporting the welfare of RFS members. “ T h e 2 0 1 3 Wambelong F ire was so big and so quick to start, it was such a big campaign. “ It was like, ‘ I can give you whatever hours I can out of work’, so we’d go up overnight [to the catering venue] where a few of us would get together.”

The position of c at e r i n g c a p t a i n i s clearly one Vicki takes

great honour in.

“I like to spoil them,” she sa id of the R F S crews.

“I like to keep them well fed and well watered.

“You don’t have to be a firefighter to be in the

RFS, there’s lot of other areas you can join to be of assistance.”

T he R F S i n c lude s a va r iet y of suppor t brigades, such as catering, communications, incident management

team support, aviation, community engagement, chainsaw operations, bulk water supply and more. “ T her e ’s lot s of d i f fer ent a r e a s t h at people can still assist if

they don't want to be on a fire truck on the front line,” Vicki said. “ You don’t have t o fight a fire with water.

You can fight from the background.”

Boot-scooting fun at Cooinda!

Last month, the Lifestyle team at Cooinda brought the Wild West to life with a lively afternoon of boot scooting and line dancing.

Bacon, brews and better attendance at Coona High Coonabarabran High School is strengthening its school community by bringing students, staff and parents together each term to enjoy a morning brew and a bacon-and-egg roll.

The breakfasts are a great oppor tunity to catch up with friends old and new, forging strong relationships in the community.

School principal, Duncan Graham, said the implemention of t h e s e b re a k fa s t s each term throughout year has been highly successful.

with funds to support student welfare, p ro m pt i n g th e s ta r t of the Friday morning breakfast gathering. “ We we re l oo k i n g at ou r at tendance and ways we cou l d improve it. Friday was the worst day of the week for attendance,” Mr Graham said. “ I t h a s b e e n ve r y successful; on the days we provide breakfast, attendance increases by five per cent. That makes a big difference to a smaller school.”

Mr Graham said that although improvements to attendance had been a g reat result,

the impact of the gathering was much greater. “ I t ’s ve r y p o s i t i ve for our community to have s tudent s, s taf f and pa rents come together in this way,” he said.

Staf f and sen io r students have made the event pos s i b l e each term by planning and arriving early to begin cooking for the school.

H i g h schoo l t e a c h e r , T i m F a y, said the communit y breakfast encourages connection amongst school groups.

“It is excellent for building that

co m m u n i t y fe e l i n g , especially for students who may not get that outside the school,” Mr Fay said “Get to school ten m i n utes e a r l y, g ra b a n e g g - a n d - b a co n roll and start the day right.”

Students, staff and pa rents w ho have not yet had the opportunity to attend the b reak fast a re encouraged to come along.

“You should come have breakfast with us, have a bacon - and egg ro l l and ta l k to someone you haven’t talked to before,” Mr Graham encouraged.

Conservation triumph in the Pilliga as Bandicoots rebound The Pilliga Forest is being hailed as a conservation success story, proving to be a safe haven for a species of threatened Bandicoots.

introduction program, which commenced in August 2023, was conducted by A u s t r a l i a n W i ld l i fe Conservancy (AWC) in partnership with NSW Nat i o n a l Pa rk s a nd Wildlife Service as part of a program to restore at least six regionallyex t i nc t m a m m a l s t o the 5800-hectare feralpredator-free enclosure.

AWC ecologists conduct a n nua l mon it or i ng programs to track the status a nd trends of these popu lations, employing techniques such as spotl ighti ng and trapping.

T he images show that the end a ngered Shark Bay Bandicoot is adapting to a feralpredator-free life almost two years after it was re -i ntr oduced into the forest.

Maisie Duffin, AWC f ield e c olog i st , said the band icoot family portrait is one o f m a ny s i g n s t h a t the population is experiencing a smooth transition to its new home. “ It def initely made ou r d ay s e ei n g t he photo of the three young bandicoots scurry ing to keep up with their mum,” Ms Duffin said. “ We w e r e s i f t i n g through thousands of motion-sensor camera images when we came across that gem.

“A s ide f r om b ei n g completely adorable, it gave us great confidence t h at t he b a nd i c o o t s are breeding and that the population in the Pilliga is growing.”

The smallest species of bandicoot, Shark Bay Bandicoots weigh up to

220 grams and grow up to 20-centimetres long.

They are lightly built, have a long, poi nted snout, large erect ears a nd a s h o r t t a i l up t o 11cm lon g. T hei r fur is g r izzled, light brownish-grey in colour and disting uished by darker brownblack ba rs rad iati ng dow nwa r d s over t he sides of the body from t he ba c k . T he c h i n , underbelly and feet are white.

T he Shark Bay Bandicoot is a solitary, nocturnal animal that shelters by day in nests of plant material that are hidden beneath low shrubs. This species is omnivorous, consuming a wide variety of invertebrates, digging for plant matter and, occasionally, hunting sma l l ver tebrates.

Breed i ng is la rgely seasonal, triggered by the f i rst substa ntia l autumn rains, but can occur at any time of year when env i r on ment a l c ond it ion s a r e go od .

Each year, females can have up to four litters, each of between one and three young.

Released Sixty-six Shark Bay Bandicoots (also known a s We s t e r n B a r r e d B a nd ic o ot s or M a rl ) were part of the original cohort released to the Pilliga. Prior to their arrival, the bandicoot had been absent from the wild in the north west of NSW for more than 150 years, driven t o ex ti nction ma i n ly due t o the impact of introduced predators such as cats and foxes.

“Having been involved in the initial reintroduction of Shark Bay bandicoot to the Pilliga, it is exciting to see them now breeding – a promising sign that they are well on their way to establishing a viable, self-sustaining population,” said David Kelly, manager, t h r e at e n e d s p e c i e s , NPWS. This is my first column as the Federal Member for Parkes, an electorate that covers more than 400,000 square kilometres of NSW. It’s an area bigger than Japan, Germany, or even Great Britain.

I follow in the footsteps of some great Federal Members, most recently the Honourable Mark Coulton, who ably represented this community for 18 years.

There have been boundary changes to the Parkes electorate and we warmly welcome the Forbes, Bland and Parkes shires to the electorate. The Gwydir Shire has now become part of the New England electorate.

I am committed to serving the people of the Parkes electorate, and it has been my great pleasure to meet and listen to people across this vast region over the past 10 months during the Federal Election campaign and in the weeks since.

My respect has only grown for the residents and businesspeople across this region. As I travelled 36,000 kilometres during the election

campaign, I learnt more about the challenges people face in Broken Hill and Bourke, in Moree, Narrabri, Parkes and Walgett, and in many more towns and villages.

People on the land achieve great things despite the tyranny of distance, but they deserve the same levels of education, of healthcare, and of safety. They deserve to live as long as their cousins in the city, to have the same opportunities to thrive, and to enjoy a great lifestyle.

Regional NSW is the heartland of so many vital commodities. It serves as the backbone of our state in so many ways. Our people need and deserve to be supported, so they can continue to stay and thrive in regional, rural and remote areas.

I thank the people in the Parkes electorate for electing me to serve them. I remain committed to working for a better future for regional Australia, and look forward to meeting so many more people throughout this great electorate.

G’day folks.

There are still a couple of weeks until Parliament sits again, but there is always a lot going on. So far this month I have been out on the road to Lake Cargelligo, Condobolin, Tottenham, Narrabri and Wee Waa. This week I am flying to Albury to head out for IIRD Committee site visits at Griffith, Deniliquin and Tocumwal and the week after I will be hosting another minister in Barwon – another chance to show a member of the cabinet around the electorate to better inform their decisions in Macquarie St. New Barwon preschools I was pleased t o hea r that the Government’s plan for three new preschools in Barwon at Broken Hill, Bourke and Menindee has moved a step closer with a contract being awarded.

The schools, which will be built at Menindee Public School, Morgan St Public School in Broken Hill and Bourke Public School, are part of the Government’s commitment to building 100 preschools across the state.

They are expected to open their doors in 2027.

I pa r ticu la rly wa nt t o thank the Deputy Premier a nd Education M i n ister, Prue Car, for listening to the specific concerns of the Bourke community that a new preschool would infringe on the work of the existing preschool run by Bourke and District Children’s Services (BDCS).

Bourke’s existing preschool, BDCS has done a lot to bring about more social cohesion in the town and the community wants that work to continue.

I a m c on f ident th at the government’s plan to make the new facility operate solely as a transition centre to help local kids go from preschool to primary, allowing BDCS to continue their work, is a solution that works for everybody and has the support of the community.

Nominations open for Minister’s Awards for Women in Local Government For over a century, women have played crucial roles in local government. The first

woman elected as a councillor was Lillian Fowler, who was voted onto Newtown Council in 1928 and later went on to become the first woman elected mayor of any council in Australia. A federal electorate is now named in her honour.

To acknowledge the role of women in local government, every year outstanding women in municipal government are also recognised at the Minister’s Awards for Women in Local Government.

If you know someone who is doing exceptional work at a local council, you can nominate them for an award.

NAIDOC Week There were a number of events around the electorate for NA IDOC Week. Given that my electorate is 44.5 per cent of the state, I was never going to be able to get to all of them, so while I was in Lake Cargelligo and Condobolin, two of my staff represented me at Walgett.

By all accounts it was a good, strong community turnout. Walgett locals Jenny and Garry Trindall, along with an amazing support team, managed to put together a successful event. There were several government agencies who attended to pay their respects and Shane Hamilton, the Deputy Secretary for Aboriginal Affairs, was also there.

Later, I made it to Wee Waa for their celebrations. This year’s theme was “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy ”, shining the spotlight on how our young, emerging leaders can play a role in the future.

A crucial part of that future is local decision-making. It seems obvious that when the decisions affecting Indigenous communities are made in high-rise buildings in Sydney, they often fail to adequately me et c om mu n it y ne e d s , concer ns, or sentiments.

Engaging our young people in community, putting into play the knowledge of Elders that has been passed down to them and getting young people to step up to make decisions that ref lect the wishes, needs, values, and concerns of their community is likely to guarantee a far better future.

Wee Waa Hospital Independent Review Recently, the Independent R ev iew of the We e Wa a Hea lth S er v ice ha nded dow n its f i nd i ngs and recommendations. The review was requested by me and was approved by the Health Minister, Ryan Park, back in February. It has taken submissions from the public and deliberated over the last few months before releasing its findings this month.

I c a n’t s t r e s s e n ou g h how vitally important this review is as a positive step towards restoring health services in Wee Waa – as they should be. The report makes it clear that there have been serious problems with the administration of the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD), which administers the health service.

The review was conducted by four independent experts wh o c a me f r om out s ide the Hunter New England L oca l Hea lth D istr ict.

Their recommendations are therefore unbiased and have one specific aim, which is to get Wee Waa Health Service open and operating 24 hours, seven d ays a week w ith increased services.

From there the next, and equally important, step is the plan for the implementation of the report’s recommendations.

This plan will be developed in consultation with people from the community who use the Wee Waa Health Service.

Even after a draft of the plan is finalised, the Minister, Ryan Park MP, has given a commitment that he won't sign off until I am satisfied that it completely reflects the community's thoughts and addresses their needs.

This next stage w ill be completed in August. Meanwhile, there is also the Committee on Community Services inquiry i nt o my bi l l t o spl it the HNELHD, hearings, which w ill be held at Na r rabr i Council Chambers on 12 August and Tamworth Jockey Club and Function Centre in Taminda on 13 August.

As we gathered in our classes to cheerily sing the National A nthem and Yaama Ngindaay, some of our dedicated students were belatedly acknowledged for their home-reading efforts.

A ll students a re encou raged t o read ever y night and in a variety of ways – recipes, magazines, TV guides and many other ways, i nclud i ng books sent home each day. Their achievements are then celebrated w ith certificates and other

Nerves – check! These were the final thoughts leading up to our school’s annual Spelling Bee. In the junior section, 30 students were met w ith fa i rly simple words that g radually prog ressed t o more difficult ones.

In the sixth round, the last five students were trying to correctly prog ress t o the nex t round. Emi ly Ba i l l ie (Year 4), Harvey Harris (Year 4), Chad Stewart

(Year 4) and Hari Bragg (Year 2) were eliminated, leaving Tommy Dicks the champion with the word ‘omnivorous’.

S eventeen sen ior students battled it out, with two students making it to round six.

WEATHER WATCH It has been notably dry since the end of May, except for above-average rainfalls in western Victoria and along the NSW coast and aboveaverage rainfalls for June at major towns in northeast Victoria.

Coonabarabran has had only 24mms since the end of May and faces its driest June-July period since 2017. However, the current heavy rain situation in southern Western Australia does look strong enough to deliver heavy rain by next weekend.

Albany, after recording its wettest Autumn since 1917, has had further heavy rain during June and July - very similar to that of 1917, which did see a wet period from September 1917 right through to January 1918.

Busselton recorded 188mms during June and over 200mms the first 20 days of July, the wettest there since 1999.

The rest of 1999 from July to December was wetter than average at most places in our region.

The previous wettest June and July at Busselton were in 1996, 1992, 1982, 1967; both 1964 and 1917 were the wettest of them all.

Canberra has had 11 days during June of cold mornings less than minus five degrees, and then a further three days colder than minus five degrees to date in July - the longest since 15 days in June and July of 1965.

Rainfall was above average August in 1965, close to normal in September, with maximum temperatures well above normal. October 1965 was dry and very hot, with maxima up to 33 degrees in Victoria. It was wetter and warmer across the border into NSW, where Coonabarabran recorded 35 degrees and Moree, which was dry in October, recorded 40 degrees on 31 October 1965.

Moree received 115mms in December 1965 and the highest temperature reached 42.2 degrees on 30 December. Both November and December 1965 were wetter and warmer, with a high frequency of thunderstorms (which gave me happy memories of tracking storms on the CSIRO radar site at Aspendale).

Jets ground Unicorns in semi-final shake-up The Narromine Jets have thrown the Castlereagh League first-grade competition ladder into a spin, with a thrilling 23–16 victory over the Coonabarabran Unicorns in last Saturday’s match of the round, Unfortunately for the Unicorns, the Jets also came up trumps in both the league tag and reserve grade matches – making a clean sweep of the day’s footy action.

N a r r o m i n e’ s f i r s t grade win at Narromine puts them just one competition point b e h i n d t h e s e co n d placed Unicorns, setting up a tense finish to the regular season.

Mia makes her mark Coonabarabran’s Mia Bowman has made her mark on the state stage, representing the team at the Zone 4 Junior Inter-Region 7-a-side Lawn Bowls Championships, held in Dubbo on 12-13 July.

Mia was the youngest player on the team and the only girl selected, taking on lead in the fours’ team.

Despite having never

played together before, unlike many of their competitors, the Zone 4 team fou nd thei r rhy th m a f t er a slow start and a loss in their

opening match.

They bounced back, however, going on to win all their remaining games in the sectional round.

The early loss meant the team missed out on the top finals’ draw, instead competing for fifth to eighth place.

finished a commendable sixth out of 14 teams from across NSW. M i a’s p er for ma nc e was standout in a tough competition.

Shooting for the stars Coonabarabran local, Alirah Watton, 20, has earned selection in the 2025 NSW First Nations Netball team – and with plans to bring home gold, she’s proving to the community that when it comes to chasing your dreams, the ball is in your court.

by CLAUDIA HEANEY After completing her schooling at Coonabarabran High School, Alirah has worked to pursue the spor t of netball professionally, earning her a place on the First Nations’ team fo r the second consecutive year. “ I’m ve r y excited to b e re selected this year at trials, it means a lot being from a small country town,” Alirah said.

“To represent NSW, my home town and mob is something I’m very proud of.”

Training is well under way for the newly-formed team, with a promising season ahead.

“Our campaign for nationals has begun. “ We w i l l p l a y n a t i o n a l s i n Melbourne and it will be a weeklong tournament.”

After a close match at the semifinals in Brisbane last year, where they secured bronze, Alirah said this year’s team has plans to “go for gold” this campaign.

“It is really being shown in our training with the intensity that the girls are bringing.”

Grateful for the oppor tunit y to return after last season, Alirah shared her excitement about the season ahead.

“I’m feeling very excited leading up to the tournament with the newly-selected team. I’m looking

forward to seeing what we can do out on the court together,” she said.

“I had the best experience last year, so I’m very grateful that I get to do it again this year.”

Alirah is passionate about netball and the mechanics of the game – something that serves her well in her position as goal defence.

“I love playing defence. I think it’s a position that requires you to work hard for yourself and others and is very rewarding when you do get an intercept or turnover for your team,” she said.

Alirah is embracing this opportunity to develop her skills as a player and her knowledge of the game , with the aim of improving not only her own performance, but also contributing more to the team.

Alirah highlighted the privilege she feels in being part of the team.

“I feel very proud to represent NSW. It’s a different type of feeling being able to put the blue dress o n a n d to k n ow I’m n ot o n l y representing my state – but also my family and culture. It is something I take immense pride in,” Alirah said.

She hopes kids in the community see her chasing her dream and feel encouraged to pursue their own.

“I want to show country kids – or just anyone – that if you work hard enough and you’ve got a dream, do not let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve it.”

Endangered Shark Bay bandicoot embracing new home in the Pilliga The endangered Shark Bay bandicoot is adapting to a feral predator-free life, almost two years after the species was reintroduced to Pilliga State Conservation Area.

A recent photograph of a female bandicoot with three young at foot inspired confidence amongst ecologists who have closely monitored the species since it was flown 3000 kilometres from Western Australia.

The reintroduction in August 2023 was conducted by Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service as part of a program to restore at least six regionally extinct mammals to a 5800 hectare feral predator-free exclosure.

Maisie Duffin, AWC field ecologist, said the bandicoot family portrait is one of many signs that the population is experiencing a smooth transition to its new home.

“It definitely made our day seeing the photo of the three young bandicoots scurrying to keep up with their mum,” Maisie said.

“We were sifting through thousands of motion sensor camera images when we came across that gem.”

“Aside from being completely adorable, it gave us great confidence that the bandicoots are breeding and that the population in the Pilliga is growing.”

Sixty-six Shark Bay bandicoots (also known as Western Barred bandicoots or Marl) were part of the original cohort released to the Pilliga.

Prior to their arrival, the bandicoot had been absent from the wild in the north west of NSW for more than 150 years, driven to extinction mainly due to the impact of introduced predators such as cats and foxes.

During a post-reintroduction trapping survey in August last year, ecologists captured 85 bandicoots, 44 of which were born in the Pilliga.

While most of the bandicoots captured

were adults, more than half of the females (68 per cent) lured in by bait balls of peanut butter, oats and fish, were in breeding condition.

“Having been involved in the initial reintroduction of Shark Bay bandicoot to the Pilliga, it is exciting to see them now breeding - a promising sign that they are well on their way to establishing a viable, self-sustaining population,” said David Kelly, manager, threatened species for the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Ecologists will continue monitoring the bandicoots over the coming years to track the status and trajectory of the population.

The team is also expecting to capture more bandicoot pictures through the permanent deployment of motion sensor cameras across the fenced area.

The bandicoot development marks an exciting chapter for AWC, which has a base in Narrabri, after recording a promising increase in bilby numbers in the Pilliga.

Earlier this year, the AWC reported that ecologists had been witnessing a bilby burrowing frenzy.

The prolific foragers and diggers play an important role as ecosystem engineers, turning over 20 tonnes of soil annually through burrowing and digging for food.

“The bilbies with their engineering colleagues, the bettongs, have turned over a lot of soil in their search for food and when digging burrows,” said senior wildlife ecologist, Dr Vicki Stokes earlier this year.

“These activities will improve the ecosystem health of the Pilliga forest over time.”

During a recent population survey in the Pilliga, the team encountered several baby bilbies.

“Two of the female bilbies had tiny baby bilbies (called joeys) in their pouches,” Dr Stokes said.

“We’ve also had increasing bilby activity on motion-sensor cameras across the fenced area, indicating that the population is doing well.”

NDIS changes ‘distressing’: Chaffey Member for Parkes Jamie Chaffey met with concerned NDIS providers to discuss changes to the NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits 2025–26.

The roundtable discussion in Dubbo was hosted by Marathon Health and included providers and occupational therapists who had contacted Mr Chaffey directly with their concerns with NDIS changes brought in by the federal government from July 1, 2025.

Of particular concern to participants of the roundtable were significant changes to transport allowance arrangements that had been announced at very short notice by the Albanese-led Labor government.

“It was distressing to hear the catastrophic impact these changes could mean for people who rely on these services to help them in their everyday lives,” Mr Chaffey said.

“While these changes to the transport allowance might not

have much impact in metropolitan areas, in regional, rural and remote areas it could be the difference between getting essential assistance in the home and travelling hundreds of miles to a service centre – or not getting care at all.

“We are talking about people with significant challenges trying to find access to a suitable vehicle and taking a round trip that includes fuel costs, potentially accommodation costs, and does not come up with solutions unique to their home or their situation.

“Sometimes it’s as simple as making sure a new wheelchair fits through the front door.

“The practitioners I met with in Dubbo told me it had already been death by 1000 cuts – and this was the 1000th-and-first cut that could mean the end for some services. These are people who are often working for a notfor-profit organisation that has managed to keep providing those

services despite blow after blow through decisions made far from where the help is actually provided.”

Mr Chaffey said the changes were soon to be implemented by the federal government despite no consultation with service providers about the impact and consequences of the decision.

“It’s a clear example of arrogance in decision-making affecting our most vulnerable people,” he said.

“The Coalition has written to the Minister for Disability and the NDIS, the Hon Mark Butler MP, calling on the government to defer these changes for at least three months.

“This will allow for consultation and planning – that should have been undertaken before any of these changes were proposed – so service providers can not only have a say, but make arrangements that might ensure the ongoing provision of services.

“We can’t afford for these

skilled, caring and experienced people to pack up and go because the organisation is no longer feasible.

“Then who will provide assistance to those people in remote areas who need it so badly?

“The Coalition will continue to monitor the impact of these changes and hold the Government to account for any detrimental outcomes to NDIS participants.”

When queried by the ABC about the recently adopted pricing structure, including a price freeze on occupational therapists’ services, Mr Butler said he is confident that the price determination by the NDIS board “was the product of some very, very serious work comparing prices across health, aged care, disability and veteran systems”.

The ABC’s Sally Sara pressed further, asking particularly about travel rebates for those who are going into remote and regional and rural areas.

“We've heard concerns about that. Are you confident that the system will be adequate to ensure that those Australians who require care and are in places that are far away from major centres will still receive the care they need?,” Sara asked Butler on Radio National Breakfast in late June.

“This is a determination that the NDIS board made after a pretty thorough analysis of what is needed, that there are some representations being made to me and to my ministerial colleague, Jenny McAllister, and of course we'll consider them very carefully,” Mr Butler said.

“But this is a pricing determination made by the board independently. It's one, as I've analysed it, that I think is in the interests of participants themselves. But if there are representations in some areas about some of those consequences, of course I'll look at them closely.”

Taylor Oval to proceed as planned site for new Moree Aquatic Centre At the July meeting of Moree Plains Shire Council, held last Thursday, July 17, a resolution was passed that council proceed with Taylor Oval as the planned site for the new Moree Aquatic Centre.

During the meeting, a report from NSW Public Works regarding Site Feasibility for Taylor Oval was tabled as part of the discussion.

The report confirmed that “Taylor Oval is a suitable location for the proposed new pool given its connectivity to the town centre, its proximity to the existing sporting and community infrastructure and the local schools.”

Mayor Susannah Pearse, said the study was a step in the right direction, one that allowed council to continue with existing plans for Taylor Oval as the site for the

new pool.

“This study concluded that Taylor Oval is a suitable and feasible location for our new swimming pool, which is really positive,” said Cr Pearse.

“Council is aware of how passionate our community is about our pool and how important it is to have somewhere to swim – especially for children who are learning this vital life skill – so we are pleased to have a number of scenarios to ensure Taylor Oval moves forward as the site.

“In terms of next steps to getting final approval for Taylor Oval as the site for our new pool, the report from NSW Public Works recommended Council consult Heritage NSW and we will proceed based on that recommendation.”

In considering the matter,

Taylor Oval will proceed as the planned home of the new Moree Aquatic Centre following last week’s council meeting.

council noted the extensive work undertaken in reviewing the site’s cultural heritage – which resulted in the state-approved rezoning more than a

decade ago – and has requested that Heritage NSW consider that prior work in a review of the current registration.

NSW Farmers encourages young aggies to upskill after state government extends AgSkilled program

Brendan Moylan, the Member for Northern Tablelands, has welcomed a $4 million commitment towards a significant water program.

Funding for water program State Member for Northern Tablelands Brendan Moylan has announced another $4 million has been committed to a significant water program in the Northern Tablelands electorate.

The Reconnecting Watercourse Country program is aimed at increasing the effectiveness of environmental water flows in the Gwydir catchment.

The program seeks to increase environmental water release efficiency, enable farming and water for the environment to coexist, restore and establish water flows for the environmental corridor,

and improve conservation efforts.

The additional $4 million commitment to the program was announced in the recently handed down 2025-26 NSW Budget.

Mr Moylan said it covers the Gingham Watercourse, Lower Gwydir Watercourse and the Lower Mehi River and will benefit the entire region beyond the riverbank.

“The Gwydir Reconnecting Watercourse Country program aims to ensure that environmental water actually reaches the areas that rely on it, including wetlands which will help the survival of

wildlife in the area,” Mr Moylan said.

“Overall, the purpose of the program, is to support healthier rivers, more wildlife, and stronger connections between water systems, benefiting both the environment and local communities.”

The project began in 2023 and forms part of the Northern Basin Toolkit, aimed at improving the ecological health of northern Basin rivers.

The total estimated cost is $9.8 million and is anticipated to be completed in 2027.

NSW Farmers is encouraging young people to upskill in agriculture as the state government announces a new $5 million boost to the AgSkilled program.

As reported in last week’s North West Magazine, the NSW government announced it would extend its AgSkilled initiative for a further 12 months, with the new program funding to allow hundreds of short courses in agricultural skills to continue.

NSW Young Farmers chair Martin Murray said the funding injection could help thousands of current and future farmers or farm employees to develop vital skills for the future.

“Producing food and fibre is no easy job, and there’s all sorts of things Aussie farmers need to be skilled in to have, or be part of, a successful farm business,” Mr Murray said. “From safe chemical use to farm machinery operation and even emerging technologies, AgSkilled’s courses go a long way to helping our farmers and our agricultural industry grow the fresh, healthy, sustainable produce our nation needs.”

Moving forward, Mr Murray said further long-term investment in the training and development of NSW’s agricultural workforce was vital to

“The next generation of farmers has endless potential, and so does our broader agricultural workforce – but we need the opportunities to upskill if we are to attract and retain strong talent within the sector.”

Communities set to benefit as Nutrien’s Community Grants Program returns Applications for Nutrien Ag Solutions’ Community Grants Program are now open for 2025.

Nutrien Ag Solutions, in partnership with the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) invites eligible not-for-profit organisations to apply for a grant of up to $5,000 to support local community projects across remote, rural and regional Australia.

Since its launch in 2021, the Nutrien Ag Solutions Community Grants Program has provided over $1 million in funding to grassroots initiatives that support regional communities.

Jacqueline Webb, community investment manager at Nutrien Ag Solutions, said the program reflects Nutrien’s long-standing commitment to investing in the communities where their people and customers live and work.

“This program is about supporting the heart of our regional communities – the local projects and initiatives that make these towns great places to live and work,” Ms Webb said.

“Over the past four years, we’ve backed more than 200 community-led projects, helping to upgrade facilities, deliver services and create opportunities that directly benefit rural and regional Australians.

“As a major employer and partner in hundreds of communities, we understand the importance of contributing to a safe, successful and sustainable future for regional Australia,” Ms Webb added.

Jill Karena, FRRR’s head of granting, said

the foundation knows how important it is to support and empower communities to identify and deliver the services and activities that are most needed by locals.

“Thanks to partners like Nutrien Ag Solutions, who have people on the ground in the community, we can ensure local priorities are heard and supported,” Ms Karena said.

“In the past four years, we’ve seen the big impact that these small grants can have. For example, the community of Padthaway, in South Australia, used a grant to purchase a display fridge for a community run local store, improving food security. The Program has also funded capacity-building projects for community services, such as Bowen Flexi Care in Queensland, who purchased a generator with their grant, so that they can provide continuous patient care during power outages. It’s also supported events that foster community wellbeing, like the Dimboola Steampunk Festival in Victoria, where a grant helped fund the festival entranceway and street decorations.

“Rural and regional communities are wonderful places to live, work and play and these grants offer a great opportunity to foster community wellbeing and the ongoing success and vibrancy of regional Australia.

I’m excited to see what comes forward this year,” Ms Karena said.

Applications for the 2025 Nutrien Ag Solutions Community Grants Program close on Thursday, August 7, 2025, with successful recipients announced in October.

Safer crossings for Quirindi Work is underway on the upgrade to the Callaghans Lane level crossing near Quirindi.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said he had been campaigning for the upgrade alongside concerned community members.

“Any death on our roads is a tragedy for families and local communities which is why the government must do everything they can to make dangerous rail crossings safer,” Mr Anderson said.

“Following a tragic fatal accident at the Callaghans Lane crossing, the local community contacted me deeply concerned about safety, with limited visibility and a growing number of vehicles using the road.

“The crossing needed to be upgraded which is why I took the community’s concerns directly to the Minister requesting that the government make the crossing safer for locals.

“Following our strong advocacy, the

government responded announcing that a new warning system would be installed including flashing lights and advance warning signage that is automatically triggered by an approaching train would be installed.

“I’ve been keeping the pressure on since that announcement, ensuring that work begins as soon as possible.

“I can now update the community that work began today, which is very welcome news for the local community.”

Transport for NSW have advised that work is scheduled to occur between Monday, July 14 and Friday, July 25. Work will take place between 7am and 5pm on both weekdays and weekends.

The level crossing will continue to be open to road users throughout the work.

“This is a big win for local residents who regularly use the crossing, and I’d like to thank all those who contacted me concerned about the safety of Callaghans Lane level crossing,” Mr Anderson concluded.

Regional news is the canary in the coal mine This month, I step up as president of Country Press Australia (CPA), ostensibly to represent the best interests of independent regional newspaper publishers. But the responsibility is far greater than that.

The future of regional news publishing is inextricably linked to whether regional communities will continue to have a say in shaping the future of regional Australia.

In fact, regional newspapers are the metaphorical canary in the coal mine - their health signals the health of the voice of the communities they serve.

And both are under threat.

The toxic combination of ever-expanding corporations and surging city populations dominating our politics is reducing regional communities to branch office status, with their futures determined by powerful elites in our CBDs. With every small business that’s bought out and “rolled up” into a corporate machine - or shut down to make way for a bigbox competitor - a local business owner is replaced by a corporate manager. The profits are siphoned off in the first electronic transfer back to the city, and a small part of the soul of our communities dies.

As our capital cities grow, the weight of our democracy and decision-making drifts further away from the regions - away from where much of our nation’s wealth is generated, by the way.

Even local government is losing its voice.

Many locally elected councillors now fear speaking out on behalf of their communities, worried they’ll be reported by bureaucratic staff to increasingly powerful, city-based governance bodies. When this happens, our democracy is weakened.

Regional news publishers are among the last lines of defence against these forces.

At our best, we rally and amplify the collective voice of our communities. We stand up to power and fight for a fair go.

There’s a saying that the squeaky wheel gets the grease - but in regional Australia, it’s mostly the silent, hardworking wheels that keep the whole country moving.

That’s why regional newspapers promote local communities and give those doing the heavy lifting a voice.

We unapologetically champion independent regional businesses - the ones who make, grow, and fix things. The ones who only sell what they believe in and are proud of.

We’re also here for the bush cops and single-teacher schools, the nurses and doctors who are always on duty, and the junior sports coaches who drive the bus three hours each way so kids can get a game on the weekend.

We’re up for the fight. But it’s getting harder.

A decade ago, regional newspapers were thriving. Classifieds, display ads, and community notices funded large local newsrooms filled with trained journalists.

But the landscape has changed.

When news went online - and we’re online too - global tech giants like Facebook quickly came to dominate the advertising market, using their monopolistic power to take an overwhelming share of digital ad revenue.

Yet these platforms don’t produce news.

They don’t employ journalists.

And they certainly don’t hire anyone in regional communities where they glean enormous profits from the attention of local people while contributing nothing back to local newsrooms or communities.

In fact, they profit from our content, cre-

My top priority as president of CPA is to fight for the publishers who, in turn, are fighting for their communities.
