LETTER TO THE EDITOR  editor@coonabarabrantimes.com Proposed Memorial in Neilson Park In response to Mr Tighe’s recent letter regarding the proposal for a memorial plaque in Neilson Park for Max and Sam Johnson – two little boys tragically taken too soon – I feel compelled to offer both clarity and perspective.

Firstly, I’d like to ask: What truly defines the “appropriate” place to honour the memory of young children? Max and Sam were just six and seven years old. Where do you think children that age spent their happiest moments? The answer is simple – in a park. Playing, laughing, exploring. A park is where children live in joy, and what more fitting tribute could we offer than placing a quiet seat and plaque in a space that reflects their spirit?

T e r r y, I ’d s a y y o u ’ v e travelled for a hundred years (or something close), so surely in your many decades you’ve come across dozens of memorial benches, seats, plaques, and dedications in public places – parks, along beach walks, nature reserves, even street corners. I’m half your age and I’ve seen more than I can count.

These tributes don’t become “tourist attractions” – they become points of reflection, r emembr a nc e , a nd qu iet healing. A moment for locals and visitors alike to pause and feel something deeper about the people and places around them.

The temporary memorial site that was created by community is weathered and getting tatty.

On many occasions I have witnessed many families still visit the site with their children who were the boys’ friends. I have spoken to many and all have supported something to this effect.

W h at ’s t h e d i f f e r e n c e between naming a bridge, street, road, highway, park, sporting facility, grandstand, or localities after people that have passed away to placing a bench in a park to remember two local children.

The latter is deeply personal, community-led, and quite common across towns all over Australia and the world.

How beauti ful and appropriate it would be to have a permanent, peaceful feature where people who knew and loved them can sit, reflect, and remember. The boys have now been cremated and are with family. Which is where they belong – though the community, especially our kids, are left with nowhere to reflect.

A cemetery isn’t the most ideal place for children to go.

This letter also comes from the same man who had so many negative comments to the Sky River cultural pathway – a project that celebrates local A bor ig inal her itage and provides recreation and education for our community that has been recognised and is drawing attention from near and far.

A nd it also comes from someone who was, interestingly, involved in the installation of a memorial chair for the Coonabarabran Gift that was run many moons ago (story featured in the same edition you wrote this letter to). This seat is on the corner of the Imperial Hotel, with no public consultation.

Let me be clear: I support public art, culture, seating and recreational infrastructure and features just like you claim to. I personally don’t have a problem with it. But I also support compassion, healing, and the human need to remember and honour. That’s what this seat would do.

In just a week have raised $13 0 0 i n suppor t f rom multiple community people, young and old. This alone is forms community consultation and people’s buy in to this grassroots project.

And lastly, Terry – in a few years, you might be gone.

That’s the reality of life. And who knows, someone might just install a little plaque or chair for you one day, so others can sit in peace and remember you, too. That’s what communities do. We honour our own.

Community celebrates NAIDOC Week Coonabarabran came together in strength, pride and celebration for NAIDOC Week, with a full program of events honouring this year’s theme: The Next Generation – Strength, Vision and Legacy.

Festivities began on Su n d a y, 6 J u l y, w ith th e official opening of the First Nations A r t E x hibition at SPACE gallery.

More than 8 0 ar t wor k s were unvei led, featu r ing both established and emerging artists, including local children as young as five.

The launch began with a warm welcome from SPACE representative, Kodi Brady, fo l l owe d by a h e a r t fe l t address from feature artist, Craig Ashby, who shared an insight into his creative process and connection to culture.

Craig also performed a powerful song in Gamilaraay language – a highlight of the event that moved many in the crowd.

Official opening On Monday, 7 July, the community gathered once again, outside Warrumbungle Shire Council chambers in Coonabarabran for a flag-raising and cakecutting ceremony, hosted by the Coonabarabran Local Aboriginal Land Council.

The morning featured a moving speech and visual presentation by chief executive officer, Brandon Nixon, who reflected on the week’s theme and the power of local community.

“This year’s theme not only

celebrates the achievements of our past, but the bright future ahead – empowered by the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities and the legacy of our ancestors,” Mr Nixon said.

He invited attendees to pause for a minute’s silence to honour ancestors “who can’t be with us today, but who have paved the way for us to be on this journey.” “ Lo ca l l y, N A I D O C i s a celebration of who we are – and how, even though we are a small community, all cultures can come together to recognise the oldest living culture in the world.”

The week culminated in a vibrant and well-attended Community Gathering on Wednesday, 9 July, at No. 1 Oval.

Sea-eagles soar over Timor Dam White-bellied sea eagles have been spotted on a Coonabarabran property, delighting locals John and Karen Ward.

The birds were spotted soaring above the couple’s property, ‘Glen Eric’, near Timor Dam last weekend.

“Every October, my wife and I have carried out T he Birds In Backyards bird count

– and last October we recorded, for the first time, a female whitebellied sea eagle on our pr op e r t y,” M r Wa r d said. “ We have obser ved this same bird on nu me r ou s o c c a s i o n s

since then, travelling above ou r proper ty towards Timor Dam.” The couple, who have lived on their property for 40 years, had never seen sea eagles in the a rea pr ior t o those sightings.

bellied sea eagles flying up the gorge towards the dam,” Mr Ward said.

“As it is now nesting season for white-bellied sea eagles, it would be lovely to think that they had paired up and were nesting in this area.”

Farewell Father Francis St Lawrence’s Catholic Parish farewelled Father Francis Muhenda on Sunday, 29 June, celebrating his time in the community and the lasting connections he leaves behind.

by MOLLY SHANNON Father Francis arrived in Coonabarabran nearly four years ago, i n Ja nua r y of 2 0 21, when the world wa s still in lockdown from COVID-19.

D e s pit e t he u n c e r t a i nt y o f t h at time, he said being in Coonabarabran made h im feel sa fe as the community was small a nd C o o n a b a r a br a n wasn’t as populated as other areas.

S i nc e h i s st a r t i n St Lawrence’s Parish, Father Francis has made many friends within the community, both those who are of the faith and those who are not.

“The four years have gone by very fast, and I had a lot to do with the community, I think that’s what kept me going,” Father Francis said.

“This is a small place and if you are not careful you can become very lonely, but it all depends on how you handle your time, “ I f you choose t o interact with the community, to take part in community activities, to go and visit people, to meet them and socialise w ith them, then the community becomes like

a big family.”

This rang true during his final service at St L aw r enc e ’s C at hol ic Church, where a large crowd gathered to bid him farewell.

Speaking on behalf of the parish, Mary Milsom shared heartfelt words about how deeply Father Francis will be missed.

“We will miss you very much…you have shared stories about your life and culture…and have been a great friend,” Mrs Milsom said, “Your great homilies and your kindness will be missed, but we trust God has great plans for you.

“We are sure Bathurst will make you feel warm and welcome.”

Following the service, Father Francis invited all those who attended to join him for morning tea and hot soup, supplied

by Mary Milsom, Janet Skimmings and Carmel Munns.

The morning tea was attended by members from all corners of the community, whom Father Francis said he will miss dearly. “ It is ver y hard to say goodbye, because after some time you get a strong affinity with the place where you live

– it becomes a home and it’s never easy to leave home,” he said.

“It’s never easy to say ‘bye bye’ to a friend.”

O rda i ned i n 19 8 5 , Fat he r F r a n c i s h a s e nj o y e d a l o n g a n d meaningful career as a priest. Over the years, he said he has learned many lessons, but one that stands out is the importance of always listening and be open.

“What I’ve learnt is that if you do your work as a priest and reach out to the people, make sure that you are in contact with them, the people will respond,” Father Francis said, “ That doesn’t mean that everyone will come to church or that you have to deal only with those who come to church. Yes, we do encourage people to come to church, to pray together, but at the same time our ministry is much more than that. “ I thin k I found that ver y impor tant, especially listening to what people have to tell you – their message – because in that way you come to realise their own perspective of what they think a priest should be, what they expect from a priest. And you can only understand if you allow

them to tell their story.”

Father Francis warmly encourages anyone who wants to attend church – but feels they can’t – to come to Mass anyway. “ I always tell people, God does not discriminate, we are all his children, and we are all welcome,” he said. “ T he church is f o r e ve r y b o dy, e ve n somebody who has not yet been baptised. If they feel that they want to come and join the community and pray they are most welcome – prayer isn’t limited to the baptised alone. “ T hey a re on the j o u r n e y, t h e y a r e searching and the b e s t w ay t o s e a r c h would be to pray, so I cannot discourage such a person. G od hea rs the prayers of all his children.”

Father Francis said one thing he will miss about Coonabarabran is its natural beauty, wh ich h a s de ep ened h i s appr e c i at ion for Australia as a whole. “ I think Coona has taught me to appreciate the beaut y of the country,” Father Francis said.

“Oftentimes, we can get lost in big, major cities with skyscrapers,

with a lot of hustle and bustle, and we get that picture of a country and we lose out what the countryside has to offer.

“My stay in regional Australia has allowed me to experience the beauty of the country, not only along the coast and in the cities, but a l s o i n t he s m a l le r c om mu n it ies , i n the

farming communities, in the scrub and the hills and all the vegetation around.

“It gives you a different perspective, a different picture of the country, it helps you to have a more holistic view of the country, “It’s beautiful here It’s very unique. My exposure in regional Australia is

very precious.”

Father Francis has become a valued member not only of St Lawrence’s Pa r ish, but of the wider Coonabarabran community – and he will be deeply missed. He now heads to Bathurst for his next chapter, with locals reminding him to rug up for the colder weather!

IN FOCUS: MORE THAN JUST A BRA

Fitted to play, ready to move In May of this year, Coonabarabran High School ran a project aimed at helping more female students participate in sport and physical activity.

by MOLLY SHANNON Acting principal, Mr Duncan Graham and the Coonabarabran H i g h S c h o o l P&C committee sought the exper tise of a professional bra fitter in to help girls find the right sports bra for not only thei r body, but their sport as well.

In 2024, Gilgandra High School discovered that the participation of female students in s po r t s a nd phys i ca l activity was low due to ill-fitted sports bras.

Re co g n i s i n g t h i s a s a serious barrier, the assi stant p r i nci pa l reached out to professional bra fitter, Philippa Mitchell w ho ow n s a nd r un s ‘ T h e F i t t i n g St u d i o’ which operates out of Orange.

“When I fitted Gilgandra it took off, so Coonabarabran was actually my seventh school,” Ms Mitchell said.

“The girls basically got their bras on the same day and it was a b o u t t h re e we e k s befo re the athletics ca r n iva l and they actually saw a 20 per cent increase in female participation rates at the carnival. “ I t ’s f a n t a s t i c , i t means that the gir ls now understand the benefits of being professionally fitted, the advantages of wearing the right size bra and a l s o t h e r i g ht s t y l e of bra – and they’re s ta y i n g a c t i ve a n d they’re staying in sport.”

The initiative attracted some media attention, which led Coonabarabran High School girls’ student coordinator, Michelle Birrell, and Mr Graham to recognise its potential value for the girls at their school.

“The article on Gilgandra High School w h e n t h ey d i d i t a couple of years ago wa s t h e f i r s t t i m e I heard about it, and we [Coonabarabran High School staff] all thought what a great idea it was,” Mr Graham said.

“I’d always thought this would be a great opportunity for our kids.

Where we live, there a r e n’t p r o f e s s i o n a l b ra f it ter s avai lable

and to have it done properly must make a big difference.”

Initially, Mr Graham a n d te a c h e r s we re unsure of how successful the program would be, w ith some teache r s concerned that it was ove r stepping and crossing boundaries.

But the results tell a different story.

Expression of interest letters were distributed to s t u d e n t s , g i v i n g them the option to opt in or out. Parents and caregivers were also encouraged to come along to super vise if they wished to.

Girls were then fitted for spor ts bras ove r t h e co u r s e o f three days, with the fittings taking place in the meeting room of the Wellness Hub. Miss M itchel l cond ucted all the fittings herself, supported by teachers who helped usher students in and out to ensure the process ran smoothly.

Mrs Bir rell said the initiative went better than expected, with 123 girls choosing to participate.

“It went above and beyond expectations.

I t h o u g ht we m i g ht get a few girls, but not on l y d id we get fa r more than expected – the enthusiasm was incredible,” she said,” she said, “Feedback from the students has been amazing. We had even the most reluctant of girls participate and many of them did not fee l co mfo r ta b l e i n thei r own bras after they had tried on the new, fitted bra. “ T h e y w e r e constantly asking when the bras would arrive and when they did it was like Christmas, with all the girls so excited.”

Ms Mitchell’s process was also non invasive, inclusive and provided a safe place for the girls.

“With the girls at the high school I have a p roces s w he re they take their bra straps down, but they hold the bra on at the front and I put the new bra on over the top. Then, once they’re covered, I pull the other bra away,” Miss Mitchell explained.

t h ey eve r e x p o s e d and I say to them ‘I don’t want to see your breasts, I want to see a really beautifully fitting bra’, and they’re like ‘Oh, okay’ and it makes a difference when you show that empathy.”

Ms Mitchell also said that she had a ver y positive ex pe r ience with the students and the high school.

“The students were beautiful – all the girls were lovely,” she said. “ T h ey w e r e a b i t ne r vous a nd a b it a w k wa rd , b u t t h ey were so lovely and they were always polite and always thanked me, “T h e Ye a r 12 g i r l s were wonderful and they were so excited, they wanted to get fitted and they w e r e n’t n e r vo u s o r awk ward. They were going out to the other girls at school, like the younger ones who might have been their sisters or their cousins or their best friend’s sister, and saying ‘You’ve got to get this done, I’ll be your support person, let’s go and get you fitted’ – it was really amazing.”

“The school was ver y organised, they had a beautiful space ava i lable fo r me. It was very private and no boys or men were allowed in that space during the three days that I was there.

The school was ver y a cco m m o d at i n g , i t was a beautiful positive experience for everybody.”

Senior students Beth Underwood and Maggie Shannon and junio r student Evie Bartlett said they didn’t know what they were going into initially, but were very happy with the results.

“It was good because it was just oneon-one and I didn’t feel uncomfortable about it, like she was really g o o d a n d h e l pf u l ,” Beth said, “She asked a series of questions like if I’d done sports or activities, just so she had an idea of what we did physically.

“T hen we ta l ked about our bra size and she [Ms Mitchell] went on what we said, but if we needed to fix it [the b ra] she would get a dif ferent one.

It was real ly helpful in that way and didn’t make you feel u n co mfo r ta b l e, s h e was really good about i t w h i c h wa s re a l l y nice.”

Most girls who participated had never b een p rofes s i o n a l l y f it ted, but said that their experience taught them a lot and really opened up their eyes.

“I was nervous at first I guess because I’ve never done something like that,” Evie said.

Each girl said their exper ience felt safe and comforting and left them feeling more confident.

Beth said she l e a r n e d m o re t h a n she expected about the function of a bra and how to choose one suited to a specific sport. “ We s p o ke a b o ut getting proper bras and how expensive they are – and that’s when you see a lot of people not getting a sports bra or even an everyday bra, because the price is really high,” Beth said, “Philippa went through why bras were ex pensive, and was

explaining everything that goes into making and producing bras.

She went over in detail and explained why they would be a little expensive, but that they’re good quality bras, they’re not meant to have the underwire pop out or break or snap or anything like that . So that also made me feel more conf ident to go out and buy an expensive bra because I could trust it a little bit more, knowing what goes into it and that it will last.

“Even when putting on the bra, Philippa explained how you’re m ea nt to p ut it o n, because if you do it the other way you can damage the material and make it stretch – so it was good to learn the simple things.”

“Bras can be quite confusing, especially for younger girls in high school and especially i f t h e y d o n’ t h a v e a parental f igure or so m eo n e ta l k i n g to them about these things. They can be uncomfortable about it o r un su re, so to have another woman

come i n and speak about it is comforting a n d h e l p f u l ,” M i s s Underwood said.

St u d e nt, M a g g i e Shannon believes that the project will help w it h at te n d a n ce i n sport.

“I feel it’s a really good initiative for girls, especially those in high school, because participation rates do drop off, so it’s a good initiative to get girls into sport,” she said.

The project was fully funded by Coonabarabran High School and the P&C , i n c l u d i n g t h e provision of bras for students. The school made this possible through its equit y funding, designed to help bridge the gap b et w e e n r u ra l a n d metropolitan areas.

Mr Graham was pleased with the students’ response to the program and said the school and P&C p l a n to co nt i n u e i t every year.

Support where it counts ‘Women’s Health’ is a broad umbrella term which is often only ever associated with women’s menstrual cycles, however it includes a range of other physical and mental health topics that are usually not considered.

by MOLLY SHANNON Bras have been a part of women and g i rls’ ever yd ay l ives for centuries, and yet it is estimated that 80 per cent of women are wearing the incorrect bra.

Bras are more than just an undergarment, they protect breast tissue, offer back support, help with posture, help w it h br e at h i n g a nd one study conducted, which was published

by Journal of Clinical Med ic i ne , sugge st ed that a properly fitted sports bra can reduce women’s risk of an ACL tear during exercise.

A bra that fits correctly can not only improve physic a l he a lth , but can have big impacts on women’s mental health, with many saying that wearing the right bra helps with body image, comfort, mental clarity and confidence.

“With the right bra, you do find that boosts your con f idence. T he right bra is life changing, you put the bra on in the morning and you don't think about the bra – you actually think about life,” said professional b r a f i t t e r, P h i l l i p a Mitchell, of ‘The Fitting Studio’. “ I f you’re goi ng t o school or you’re going to work or running around after kids, you’re not bei ng wor r ied ab out the straps falling off your shoulders and the underwire digging in or the band being too tight – you focus on your life and you can thrive.

“A p r o p e rl y- f i t t e d bra also looks better under every outfit, so your posture’s better your breathing’s better, you look better, so of course you’re going to feel better and more confident in every area of your life,” Ms Mitchell said.

A lthough many believe they are selecting the correct bra for themselves, research a nd ex p er t opi n ion s suggest otherwise, and education around bras and their functions is rarely discussed. “ The wrong bra can actually damage your breast tissue, and wearing the wrong bra for an activity can mean that your breasts aren't well enough supported,” Ms Mitchell said. “ There is no muscle i n breast tissue a nd the only muscle there i s ac t u a l ly l ie s f l at against the chest wall, so if your breast tissue is damaged, it doesn’t repair.”

“I believe the wrong size underwire bra causes breast t i s sue i s sue s…m a ny women are wearing a bra band size that is too small and often the bra bands are very narrow under the arm, and if they’re tight and narrow

they impede lymphatic drainage.

For women and girls in rural areas, access to bra stores or bra fitters c a n b e a c h a l len g e , compounded by many stores only stocking a limited range of sizes and stock. This lack of diversity leads to many c ho o s i n g a br a t h at “kinda fits”.

Ms Mitchell travels with ‘ T he F itting Stud io’ and v isits Coonabarabran twice a year.

In recent years, she has a ls o c ommenced f itti ng h igh school students and has attended seven schools, w ith C o onaba rabra n High School being the most recent.

Ms Mitchell believes that professional bra fittings are becoming a dying art and the lack of access for women in rural and remote areas is a problem.

“It’s really hard to get the right information, a nd it ’s a l s o r e a l ly ha rd to buy a bra online. But I think this initiative is a really good education piece for girls that they will carry with them their whole life,” Ms Mitchell said. “ T h e r e ’s n o w h e r e for g i rls i n places like Gilgandra or Coonabarabran to go in town where someone’s going to say ‘let me put you in the right bra’, because bra fitters are a dying breed, sadly.”

Ms Mitchell said bra sizing can be confusing.

“I think the issue is sizing. Say you’re a 14 in a top and you think you’re a D cup, so you go a nd pick out fou r different bras which are all 14D’s, but none of them fit properly and you get really frustrated and put them all back on the shelf,” she said, “ My adv ice is t o a lways f i nd someone who is a professional bra fitter and go and see them, because they know how to measure you and they know how all the bras fit. So, you might walk out with four different bras in four different sizes, but they will each give you the best support and the best comfort, “We need to make bra fitting accessible and approachable and we need for women to feel like they can go to a bra fitter and feel welcome.

“It’s not ‘oh I’m not big so I can’t go there’, or ‘I haven’t had breast c a nc er s o I c a n’t g o there’. It is for every woman and it’s really important that women feel safe and comfortable going for a bra fitting.”

Ms Mitchell shared tips on how t o k now when a bra is right for you, and to also be aware of how a professional fitter should measure your breasts. “ You w i l l k now i f a bra f its when they

[professional bra fitter] put it on,” Ms Mitchell explained.

“If the bra is too tight you need to speak up.

The main questions I ask every customer when I fit them is ‘how does it feel? Is it too tight across your back? Is it cutting in under your breasts?

Are the straps too tight?

Is it hurting anywhere?

Lift your arms up put them down turn around a little bit, how does it feel?”

Ms M it chel l a lso not e s t h at br a s a r e not ‘one type fits all’, wh ic h she s a id i s a common misconception,

especially when it comes to sports bras.

For different sports, you require different support, so Ms Mitchell sa id t o keep that i n mind.

“You wear a different bra to go horse riding than you would for yoga.

So, again, the benefits of

going to a professional bra fitter who knows what the bra does for wh at ac t iv it y i s important,” she said.

Ms Mitchell is hoping to continue to support g irls in reg ional and rural areas and will be heading to Bourke in the near future.

“ T he h i g h s c ho ol s are the grassroots. If I can capture all the girls at school from Year 7 to Year 12 where they do all different sports, that st a r t s the nex t generation of educated people who can go and t el l ot her s t h at you really need to do this.”

OBITUARY Raymond Edward Peckham, or Uncle Ray as he was known to so many, passed away peacefully at the Dubbo base hospital on 6 June, aged 95.

Uncle Ray was one of the most important Aboriginal leaders of the 20th Century. He travelled extensively in the 1950s and 60s, helping Aboriginal communities segregated on reserves and missions across NSW to organise for change.

He was a leading member of the Builders’ Labourers Federation (BLF) and worked tirelessly to build support across the working-class movement for Aboriginal rights.

Ray was born on 24 June 1929 in Bunyip, Victoria, where his father was working on a property. His parents, Thomas and Linda, were both Wiradjuri from central NSW. One of 13 siblings, Ray spent his early childhood on the Pilliga Mission in northwest NSW, before his family settled at the Talbragar Reserve near Dubbo when he was four years old.

Ray spoke of a freeand-easy childhood playing outdoors. But the racist NSW Aborigines Protection Board (later We l f a r e B o a r d ) t h a t controlled Aboriginal life in this era had a profound impact. Ray’s early schooling was on the Reserve, following a decision by Brocklehurst Public School to exclude Aboriginal pupils. His

father, Tom, was active in the Aborigines Progressive Association (APA) and the trade-union movement speaking out against discrimination.

Ray remembered family attending e a r l y A PA m e e t i n g s , including the historic ‘Day of Mour ning ‘in Sydney on 26 January, 1938. In September the previous year, the APA had held the first of a many major meetings in Coonabarabran, addressed by local leader Jack Kinchela, who condemned the “reign of terror” of the Protection Board.

Ray was deeply inspired by Pearl Gibbs and Bill Ferguson, two APA leaders, and he worked his whole life to realise their vision of equality and freedom. After working on properties and as a police tracker in Kempsey, Ray moved to Sydney in 1950, where he joined the Aboriginal Rights Council with Pearl Gibbs, who introduced him to left-wing trade union leaders.

Ray travelled to East Berlin for a Peace Festival in 1951 as the only Aboriginal delegate.

The Welfare Board initially denied Ray a passport, until Maritime Unions threatened industrial action. On his return, Ray joined the Communist Party of Australia, the only political party to oppose the White Australia policy at this time, with strong organisation through the unions. In

Uncle Ray PECKHAM 1952, he marched at the front of 30,000 people to the Sydney Domain demanding peace and an end to racism.

Ray was present at the historic meeting in 1957 in Sydney Town Hall that launched the campaign for a referendum to remove discriminatory clauses from the Australian constitution and he fought for the next 10 years until this referendum was successful. He joined the Builders’ Labourers Federation in the late 1950s, signed up by BLF leader Jack Mundey, and he worked on major projects like the Cahill Expressway and State Office Block. When he returned to Dubbo for work in 1959, Ray was arrested and fined under the NSW Aborigines Protection Act for having a beer at the Western Star hotel.

Throughout the 1960s, Ray campaigned with his union, the Communist Party, the AboriginalAustralian Fellowship and then the reinvigorated Aborigines Progressive Association in Sydney, demanding an end to the racist tyranny of the Protection Act and the NSW Aborigines Welfare Board that enforced it.

Ray travelled huge distances across NSW, assisting communities on Reserves to fight for their rights. Ray enjoyed spinning yar ns about these days on the road.

He often joked about the misadventures on

he first of his many trips, when a young zoology student from UNSW to drove him to Moree via Coonabarabran in 1960: “It was talking to Tommy Fuller at his camp in Coona. It was freezing cold on the first night.

Little snowflakes were coming down, the size of my finger nail. And little mate, he just had a T-shirt, shorts and a pair of thongs.

“He was standing there shivering. He went all red, just like a raddish, all the way down to his feet.

“I said – ‘Hey Tom, can we get this little fella inside? He’s going to collapse in a minute!

Looks like he’s going to break in half!’”

Ray led fights that won housing for many Aboriginal people living in humpies and tin shacks including at Coonamble, Coomaditchie near Port Kembla, Purfleet outside Taree, and Moree, where Stanley Village was established following an organising drive by Uncle Ray. Ray led an Aboriginal committee within the BLF and in 1963 the union agreed to fund a newsletter called the Aboriginal Worker. Ray recruited Ruby LangfordGinibi to the editorial committee, the first gig for this now famous writer, who had recently moved from the Coonabarabran district to Sydney to work in a factory.

Ray convinced trade unions to take collective action to force pubs and

other establishments to allow entry to Aboriginal people. He was instrumental in reforms to the Protection Act in 1963 that won the right to drink and removed the ability of the Welfare Board to confine Aboriginal people on reserves and quarantine their wages.

Ray was arrested at demonstrations opposing the Vietnam war and always saw the fight for his people as part of a global movement against racism and for peace.

He was the sole Aboriginal person who sat through the historic Arbitration Court hearings in 1965 that granted equal wages to

He then supported NT workers at Wave Hill and other stations who went on strike to demand this decision was immediately implemented. Ray convened the trade union committee within the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders (FCAATSI) that built crucial support for the Gurindji strike and the Federal Referendum.

In 1969, the NSW Aborigines Welfare Board was finally abolished.

Ray left his life of frenetic activism and worked around Australia in the following decades, before settling again in

Dubbo in the 1990s. Ray continued to campaign in his old age, taking up causes such as the fight to stop coal seam gas in the Pilliga forest. He served as Elder in Residence at Charles Sturt University and was a member of the Wiradjuri Council of Elders.

Ray has left an extraordinary legacy, transforming lives and creating opportunities for so many Aboriginal people and workingclass people in general.

We offer condolences to Ray’s family and encourage all people to learn more about the life and achievements of this extraordinary Wiradjuri leader.

CWA Expo Day celebration A lively program of entertainment, displays and informative exhibits has showcased the diverse interests and talents of country women.

Group international officer, Wendy Baldock welcomed guest speaker Emily Kim, who talked about her birth country of South Korea – the CWA country of study.

Her presentation took the form of an engaging i nt er v iew c onduc t e d

by Mudgee councillor, Katie Dicker, offering the audience personal insights and reflections on Korean culture and traditions.

H a i l i ng or ig i n a l ly from Seoul, Emily explained the education system and the qualifications required to study at university.

She also talked about her fami ly a nd the d i f ferences of l iv i ng in a big city in Korea compared to life in rural Australia.

Wendy Baldock gave a presentation on the significance of flowers i n K orea n cu ltu re, highlighting how they are deeply woven into the country’s traditions, art and daily life. She ex pla i ned that the Mug unghwa, or R ose of Sharon, is Korea’s n at ion a l f lower a nd symbolises endurance and resilience, r ef le c t i ng the spi r it of the Korean people.

Other flowers, such as chrysanthemums, are associated with longevity and are often used in traditional ceremonies, whi le lotus blossoms represent pur ity and spiritual enlightenment, frequently appearing in Korean temples and artworks. Her insights offered a deeper appr e c i at ion o f how nature and symbolism are cherished in Korean heritage.

M u d g e e branch members delighted the audience w ith a l ight-hea r t ed r end it ion o f ‘ T ipt o e Through the Tulips’ that had everyone smiling and singing along. Ilford Running Stream branch recited a reflective poem about sunf lowers and Purlewaugh presented a short comedy skit of a phone call between Hyacinth Bucket a nd her sist er R ose, from ‘ Keeping up Appearances’.

Louise Press, agriculture and env i r on ment of f ic er, talked about how the influx of imported flowers i nt o Austra l ia has significantly impacted t he dome s t i c f lower

industry, leading to a decline in local growers and raising concerns about biosecurity a nd env i ronmenta l sustainability. Over the past two decades, the number of Australian f lower g rowers has decreased by 40 per cent, with rose growers being particularly affected.

Imported flowers, often treated with chemicals l i ke g ly pho s at e a nd methyl br om ide t o meet biosecurity requirements, can p o s e e nv i r o n me nt a l and health concerns.

Additionally, the lack

of mandatory countryof- or ig i n label l i ng makes it challeng ing for consumers to identify locally-grown f lowers, further disadvantaging Australian producers.

I ndustr y advo cat es are calling for greater support for local growers and increased transparency to help s u s t a i n A u s t r a l i a ’s f lower i ndustr y. She encou raged members to look for the Aussie g r ow n s y mb ol when purchasing flowers.

Do you have a nickname? Von, Vonnie B. How did you come to l ive in Coonabarabran? I was born and raised in Coonabarabran. My father’s family have lived here for over 100 years. My mother’s family being from Wee Waa and Pilliga.

Where would people recognise your face? From the Coonaba rab ran High School where I work as a student learning s u p p o r t o f f i c e r. S o m e m a y recognise me as the organiser of the Tuesday Night Ladies Tennis Competition.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a teacher. As soon as I could read and write I wanted to teach my younger brother and sister to be able to do the same.

W h a t ’s t h e m o s t i n t e re s t i n g job you’ve ever had? The most interesting job I have had was wo r k i n g w i t h s p e c i a l - n e e d s children at the local pre-school, and my current job at the high school.

W h e re i s yo u r g o -t o s p o t i n Coonabarabran? My go-to spot isn’t actually in Coona – I love being out in the scrub.

Best thing about living in Coonabarabran? It’s familiar. I am a real homebody, so I love doing things with family and friends locally.

What/who do you think is your spirit animal? A bear. I always say in winter that I would hibernate, but they won’t let me.

What event in Coonabarabran do you look forward to most each year? My favourite time of the year is Christmas. I love catching up with family and friends.

If you could pick a decade to visit in a time machine, what would it be? The late 60’s early 70’s – I have fond memories of spending time with my cousins, riding horses through the scrub near Pilliga.

What are the top three things on your bucket list? Some things on my bucket list would be to buy a caravan to travel around Australia.

If you could have anyone around for dinner who would it be and what would you cook? I would like to have my whole family, including my grandparents and cousins around for dinner. We would all cook up a feast like we used to at Christmas.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given? The best piece of advice I was given was by my grandmother who said to “take people as you find them”.

If you could instantly be an expert in any field, what would it be? I would like to know how the brain works, to help understand human behaviour and challenges.

How do you wind down after a long day? I wind down after a long day with a cuppa and a chat with my Mum or reading. I also like to do puzzles.

What is your favourite place to visit on a road trip? My favourite place to visit is Roma, in outback Queensland. My daughter and grandchildren live on the outskirts of Roma and I never get tired of the road trip up there.

If you could swap lives with anyone for a day, who would it be? I don’t think I would like to swap lives with anyone for a day, but I think it would be nice to just have a day where there is no pressure to have to do things.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS Tooraweenah Public Ultimate Frisbee Every Friday, our students have been enjoying a new sport, with Mrs Lummis teaching Ultimate Frisbee. This dynamic game has quickly captured the attention and enthusiasm of the Tooraweenah students, who have been loving the opportunity to learn and play this fast-paced sport.

Mrs Lummis, having trained in Ultimate Frisbee, has brought her new knowledge of the game to our students, helping them develop their skills and understanding of the sport. The energy on the field has been infectious, with students actively participating and honing their teamwork and coordination.

We are also grateful to parents Nicole and Dan Harte, who are regular players of Ultimate Frisbee. Nicole and Dan shared their expertise and enthusiasm with the students, enhancing their learning experience.

The combination of Mrs Lummis’s instruction and

parental involvement has created a supportive and fun environment for our students to learn Ultimate Frisbee.

School Boccia Competition The grand final of the school Boccia Competition was played in the last week of term and featured the top two teams, Turtles and Jenkins.

It was a very tight game, with some brilliant shots from both teams.

By the end of the fifth end, the second last one, both teams were equal on three points. The final end was a real nail biter, with Jenkins breaking through to get two points to win the game.

Congratulations to the winning team members Maddison Jenkin, Eloise Jenkin and ‘honorary Jenkin’ – Rose Alison!

WEATHER WATCH During the last few d ays , a n ex t en sive low-pr e s s u r e t r ou g h formed off the northern NS W coast a nd then deepened rapidly. The central pressure of this so called bomb cyclone fel l f r om 10 0 6mbs to 986mbs in just 18 hours.

Heavy to flood rains lashed the South Coast of NSW, with Ulladulla recording a record 224mms in the 24 hours to 9am on Wednesday, 2 July – easily a record for July in 88 years of records. There was only

one other wetter day overa l l at U l ladul la, which was 352.6mms on Friday, 30 October 1959.

Narooma, with 140mms, recorded its we t t e s t Ju ly d ay i n 115 ye a r s , br e a k i n g a record which stood since 1934.

T he rain from this bomb cyclone extended t o Melbou r ne, w ith 13.6mms rainfall keepi ng ma x i mum temperatures down to 11 deg rees, while we enjoyed 17 degrees in north-east Victoria.

I remember a big b om b l ow wh i c h h it the Newcastle area on F r iday, 8 Ju ne 2 0 07 while I was living in Coonabarabran, and it was bleak and cold for weeks on end.

I did a survey o f m a x i m u m temperatures around the nation some 10 days later a nd found that the n at ion’s c oldest ever day occurred on Wednesday, 20 June.

From August 2007 onwards to November we enjoye d wa r mer than-normal conditions.

T h is lat est bomb low has weakened a nd moved t owa rds New Zealand, but has already produced above-average rainfall at some places in East Gippsland, with 103mms at Gabo Island, which has recorded consistently above-average rainfall

The final week of term three was a vibrant and exciting one for both students and staff, as we wrapped up our major creative project – our entry in the Dairy Australia Picasso Cows program.

St Lawrence’s was thrilled to be selected for this unique opportunity.

We received our blank ‘cow-vas’ at the end of term two and began a rich learning journey centred around the question: ‘What does health and nutrition mean to us?’

The journey began with a naming competition, with the winning name – Saint Stella – suggested by Winnifred Milsom and chosen by Fr Francis before his recent departure. Each class explored the concept of health and nutrition, with a particular focus on the dairy industry and developed a symbolic design that captured their class’s perspective on the theme.

These symbols were then integrated into a beautifully-painted background, thoughtfully designed and brought

to life by Miss Anna Goard, who collaborated with students and staff to capture everyone’s ideas. Miss Goard also supervised the painting process, guiding students as they added their own creative touches to Saint Stella.

The second part of the competition required us to submit five

photographs of Saint Stella, along with a learning journal. Mrs Milford created a video to showcase our school’s process and learning journey.

Saint Stella now looks absolutely stunning.

Once her final protective coat is applied, she will be proudly displayed in our school playground as

a lasting celebration of our shared learning and creativity this term.

A big thank you to all students and staff who contributed so enthusiastically to the project. A special thank you to Miss Goard for her outstanding artistic vision and dedication to the project.

It has been very dry over the past month a c r o s s mu c h o f t h e nation.

Alice Springs, Tennant Creek, Daly Wat er s , Da r w i n a nd Broome all received no rain at all.

M a ny other places i n f a r we s t e r n p a r t of Q ueensla nd a lso received no rain in June, after major floods late the previous month.

On a brighter note, on 3 July, Busselton, in Western Australia, received its heav iest r a i n s for Ju ly s i nc e 19 9 9. T here were above-average rainfalls i n ou r r e g ion s f r om September to December 1999.

Coonabarabran local Wally Tighe is calling on the community to help identify a mysterious object he discovered while playing golf. Despite numerous enquiries, its origin remains unknown. Wally describes the item as metallic and molten in appearance, with visible crystals and weighing approximately 350 grams.

W i t h 12 m i n u t e s remaining the Jets were reduced to nine players after yet another sin binning and when Dunedoo’s hooker Ta Dermott went over under the sticks from dummy half, the Swans had finally gained the lead, 32 to 30.

Rather incredibly, the Jets were able to keep their line intact for the rest of the game. Even more incredibly, they were to complete the scoring for the afternoon when, in the final minute of the game their winger, Char lie Isedale, went on a diagonal run from the centre of the field 40 metres out to score in the corner – and the Jets had recorded the most improbable of victories!

While Narromine could be justifiably proud of the win, they would have to be concer ned about the lack of discipline shown throughout the match and they will face a nervous week awaiting the judiciary outcomes as they prepare for the big match against the Coolah Kangaroos this Saturday.

The ‘Roos accounted for Cobar 38 to 20 at Cobar to continue their u n b e a te n r u n , w h i l e G u l g o n g h e l d o n to four th position on the ladder with a 26 to 10 w in over Ba radine at Baradine. The secondplaced Coonabarabran Unicorns finished over the top of Warren, taking the game 40 to 16 after the Bulldogs had led 16 to 14 at half time.

The match of the round this Satu rday w i l l see Narromine and Coolah c l a s h a t N a r r o m i n e, with the chance of a Jets’ victory very much dependent upon how their players go with the judiciary.

The league-tag game at Narromine will b e a J es s i ca Sk i n n e r Challenge Cup match, with the unbeaten Coolah Flyers looking to secure the cup from the third-placed Jets.

Gulgong and Coonaba rab ran w i l l clash at Gulgong’s Billy Dunn Oval, with a victory for the home side being important in the context of their fight to secure a top-five finish with just four rounds left to be

Netballers take on state Four local girls have made their towns proud after competing at the 2025 Hart Junior State Titles in Penrith over the weekend.

from Coonabarabran, a n d E l i s e a n d La cey Harris, from Binnaway, represented the Narrabri Netball Association in the under 13’s and under 12’s age divisions.

The three-day competition, held from 5 -7 July, brought together representative teams from across the state in a showcase of junior netball talent.

While the under 12’s

gave it thei r a l l r ight up until the last whistle, t h e u n d e r 13’s te a m finished on a high, notching up some i m p r e s s i ve w i n s a n d securing ninth place on the ladder.

Elise Harris, Adelaide Evans, Memphis Pennicot and Lacey Harris represented Narrabri Netball Association at the 2025 Hart Junior State Titles in Penrith last weekend.

WEDNESDAY GOLF Ladies break records in all areas of golf Wednesday, 3 July, saw history being made as the ladies scored pars, birdies, eagles – even a couple of holes in one – all in the warmth and comfort of a coffee shop!

That particular Wednesday was the coldest I can remember for a very long time, back to my teenage days when I lived near the river, so the girls, sensibly, opted for a cup of hot coffee instead of frost-bitten

fingers, nose and toes.

Yesterday, with slightly better weather, a good field of ladies competed in a stableford event.

Vouchers were won by Matt Pincham and Cody Higgins, 22 c/b, and Geoff Gasior and Eric Watton.

Well done to everyone who helped make the Mega Draw a great day.

Next Sunday’s chicken run, on 13 July, will be played over the back nine.

COONABARABRAN DARTS The semi-finals of the current Coonabarabran Darts competition have been played and sorted.

Bowlo Jokers toppled the Bowlo Assassins to gain a place straight into the grand final. No high scores from this game.

The Unicorns defeated the Bowlo Skulls in a hard-fought encounter, with the Skulls having the Golfie Unicorns rattled almost until the

very end – the final result being Unicorns 7 to the Skulls 4.

High scores for the Skulls were Roy Frost 100 and Sarah Pennell 112.

The finals will be played on Wednesday, 16 July, with the grand final to be held on 23 July.

by Dubbo-based Connie Greig, the six-year-old mare, Blackhill Kitty, had won at Cobar, then finished runner-up in the Picnic Cups at Mallawa and Talmoi in the lead up to Duck Creek.

Ridden by Todd Bailey, Blackhill Kitty ($2.60 equal favourite), from near last early, took control in the straight and won by over three lengths from stablemate I ’m S c a rlet t (G r ady Spokes, $2.60) and the 2023 Cup winner, All Words (Sebastian Galea, $6).

A c c u mu l at i ng 5 8 points so far during the season, Blackhill Kitty is on top of the qualifying ladder for the $50,000 P icnic Championship Final to be held at Dubbo in October.

Jet’s record improbable win!

Given their relative standings on the Castlereagh League first-grade competition ladder going into their game against the Dunedoo Swans at Dunedoo last Saturday, the Narromine Jets would have been at relative short odds to emerge as the winner.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE Those odds would have lengthened somewhat when they had a player sent from the field in the first minute of the game... and edged out a little further in the 28th minute when they had another player sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes!

Midway through the s e co n d h a l f, p u nte r s would have been able to secure a huge payout on the Jets being the winners after they had a n ot h e r t wo p l a ye r s sent off, with the odds of a victo r y fu r the r increasing when they had yet another player in the bin, with 12 minutes remaining in the game.

Yet so m eh ow, th ey did win!

It must be said that t wo Dunedoo players also cooled their heels in the sin bin midway through the first half in what was a match that will be long talked about!

In between all the trips to, and sometimes back, from the dressing sheds, there was some football played. At half time, the visitors were up 18 to 14, with two sweeping b a ck l i n e m ove m e nt s by the Swans just before the break, both resulting

i n unco nve r ted t r i es, reeling in an 18 to 6 lead held by the Jets up until the 33rd minute.

Narromine got their second half off to a great s ta r t w ith w hen thei r centre, Washie Itoya, scored his third try for the game in the first minute after the resumption of play, which was ver y shortly followed up by a try to captain-coach Corey Cox. With both t r i e s c o nve r t e d , t h e Jets held a very handy 16-point lead.

A dashing 75-metre run by the Swan’s halfback to score after he scooped up a loose ball saw him score out wide. A great sideline conversion by Ty Sutherland took six points of f Na r romine’s lead, w i t h t h e s co re b o a rd reading 30 to 20 in favour of the Jets.

With 20 minutes remaining, two Narromine players were sent on a one -way journey from the field and, with the home side having 13 players on the paddock and the visitors only 10, it seemed only a matter of time before the Swans would get on top.

The Moree community has celebrated the completion of a kids’ bike path in Kirkby Park.

Moree Plains Shire Council hosted a fun-filled morning of riding last Thursday to celebrate the project’s unveiling.

Mayor Susannah Pearse and deputy mayor Wayne Tighe joined shire general manager Natalia Cowley and staff to celebrate the new addition to the community.

Following the celebration, council described the completed facility as a place promising fun, fitness and adventure for kids of all ages.

Cr Pearse praised the council team’s efforts.

“I am hugely proud of our team who promptly removed the rocket and delivered new

infrastructure at the park,” Cr Pearse said.

“While we are working on a longer-term plan for the site, it was important to ensure the community has a safe and stimulating space in the meantime.”

More than just a place to ride, the new bike track fosters a space where children can develop balance, coordination and confidence.

This space strengthens the community by offering families a shared space to connect, make friends and encourage an active lifestyle.

Council made special mention of the children who came along last Thursday morning to celebrate the opening, with little Fred officially the first rider on the track.

Construction underway on Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s Serengeti Resort Construction is now underway on the most ambitious development in Taronga Western Plains Zoo’s history, the Serengeti Resort in Dubbo.

Set across 55 hectares of expansive grasslands, the Serengeti Resort will offer an immersive experience, unlocking a previously unused area of the Zoo, five times the size of the current African Savannah habitat. It will be home to species including giraffe, rhinoceros, zebra and antelope.

The resort will feature a central hub with a function and events centre, café restaurant, and infinity-edge pool, surrounded by diverse accommodation options with views of roaming African wildlife.

The Serengeti Resort will transform Taronga Western Plains Zoo into a multi-day proposition, delivering significant economic and tourism benefits to the Dubbo region.

The resort is projected inject an estimated $391 million into the local visitor economy, over the next 20 years.

The development has received a $20 million investment from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, made possible through a partnership between Dubbo Regional Council and Taronga Western Plains Zoo, with a co-contribution from Taronga.

This strategic partnership on this project is one that will provide a major boost to the regional visitor economy.

In the coming months the resort will start to take shape with pier drilling, concrete slab pours, pool excavation and the construction of a prototype suite. Building works are predicted to create around 70 construction jobs and a further 28 ongoing roles will be created once the facility is operational.

Taronga Western Plains Zoo currently welcomes around 300,000 guests a year, with 40,000 staying overnight in one of its three award-winning accommodation offerings. The Serengeti Resort will build on this legacy, more than doubling the overnight stay numbers and offering a new level of connection with wildlife and conservation.

Gunnedah helipad should have been closed eight years ago

Book lovers rejoice: Rotary’s sale is back in Maitland Street Books are stacked and ready to go at the Rotary Club of Narrabri’s popular Maitland Street book sale.

The organisation opened the doors to its pop-up book shop last week.

The shop, located at the former newsagency building, is a major fundraiser for Rotary.

Reading interests of all tastes are covered, with the range including fiction and non-fiction as well as different genres in each section.

There are also books for all ages, including some special interest items, as well as DVDs. Since the last sale, the club has been buoyed by continued book donations.

Rotary Club of Narrabri outgoing president Jocellin Jansson said the club was thrilled to see its much-loved sale return, this year for a limited time.

“Don’t delay. We’re encouraging people to shop early and shop regularly,” she said.

“There is an incredible array of books on offer again.”

Rotary has been buoyed by the community’s continued support, with a lot of new stock on the shelves.

“We thank the community for continuing to support the sale so strongly.”

“Every dollar we raise at the book sale goes back into the community to support local not-for-profits, charities and youth programs,” Ms Jansson said.

As the Rotary year draws to an end, Ms Jansson is preparing to distribute thousands of dollars of donations to local organisations.

It is customary in Rotary for the president to issue donations to a variety of Rotary and local causes at the end of their presidency.

“A substantial amount of our income is distributed across mostly local organisations,” Ms Jansson said.

The book sale has developed from a book section at a garage sale held at the showgrounds to the stand-alone sale in the Narrabri town centre.

Narrabri local John McDonald has kindly supported the initiative by providing the Maitland Street shop for Rotary’s use. Rotarian and Narrabri businessman Tim Logan provided warehouse space prior to the shop’s reopening.

Rotary’s book sale will be open on a Monday to Friday, 9am to 4pm, and on a Saturday from 9am to 12pm for a limited time. As advertised in The Courier.

The Gunnedah Hospital helipad should have been closed eight years ago, according to new information obtained by local council.

The fresh details come as Gunnedah Shire Council prepares to write to NSW Health and state MP Kevin Anderson requesting the “urgent reinstatement” of the hospital helipad.

As first revealed by the Gunnedah Times in March, all helicopter landings at the Gunnedah Hospital helipad have been transferred to the airport, pending a review of the helipad’s viability.

At the time, a Hunter New England Health spokesperson said the closure was not related to the hospital redevelopment.

At the June meeting of council, general manager Eric Groth told councillors that the service has been shutdown since February.

But a 2017 report to NSW Health which “did not see the light of day” showed the helipad closure should have occurred much earlier.

“The report indicated helicopters should not operate without further changes to the infrastructure,” Mr Groth said.

“That report did not come to the table, and those helicopters have been operating for the last eight years despite that.”

Council said a subsequent report in 2020, which coincided with regulation changes

to the helicopter operations and hospital redevelopment, identified 19 recommendations to infrastructure, including the helipad.

Mr Groth was told the infrastructure changes required were “not within the budget” available.

The helipad’s transfer to the airport became particularly problematic for the Gunnedah community as the move coincided with the temporary closure of Cohen’s Bridge early this year due to maintenance.

The subsequent detour from Gunnedah to the airport added critical time to the journeys as noted by councillor Juliana McArthur.

“On two occasions I’ve had to make use of air ambulance services,” she said.

“Each occasion took between 15-20 minutes to get from the hospital to the airport.

“That is a very long time in an emergency.”

Councillor Robert Hoddle suggested council write to the authorities to express their collective concern about the helipad situation.

It was agreed that wording of the letter would also address the installation of any infrastructure required to ensure compliance with regulations to enable NSW Ambulance to continue air ambulance operations from the landing pad.

Cr Hoddle also noted the cost in health staff and paramedics transferring patients to the airport would be considerably more than utilising the hospital helipad.

Artful Giving blending regional art with social impact for Gunnedah Family Support Hosted in the heart of Gunnedah, Artful Giving is a one-day cultural event that blends regional art with social impact.

Guests will be welcomed to experience a gallery walk through three unique spaces followed by an intimate long table lunch held at the rear of the Oxley Chambers @ Gunnedah Grounds in August.

The event is aiming to raise $10,000 or more for Gunnedah Family Support while sparking healthy conversations around mental health along with domestic and family violence in the region.

These funds will directly support initiatives that provide housing, counselling, and essential services for women, children and families impacted by domestic and family violence.

Ingrid Kaineder is the organiser behind the event. Domestic violence is not only an issue she advocates against but is also something that has affected her directly.

“As someone who has not only worked in event organisation but is also a twice survivor of domestic violence, this initiative is my way of showing how pain can be transformed into purpose,” she said.

“Through connection, community, and creativity, I have found healing, and I believe others can too.

“This event is a platform to shine light on stories that are often hidden and a way to raise urgent funds for women, children and families who need a safe path to new beginnings.”

The long lunch will include canapes on arrival, a two-course seated menu catered

by Relish Catering paired with drinks served by Miss Lulu’s Travelling Bar, and live music performed by Kirsty Larkin and Steve Macauley.

Guests will listen to esteemed speaker Sarah Williams, founder of What Were You Wearing? Australia.

Artful Giving is a ticketed event for 50 guests however the gallery walk will be open to the general public for a small fee.

All artwork is available for purchase with a percentage of the sales on the day also donated back to Gunnedah Family Support.

The long table lunch and gallery walk is $250 per ticket, all inclusive. The gallery walk is $15 per ticket.

Ten people charged with 30 offences in Operation Sorteria Ten people have been charged with 30 offences under Operation Soteria.

Operation Soteria is a strategic initiative focusing on aggravated break, enter and steal offences, stealing motor vehicles, and ‘post and boast’ offences where social media is used to gain notoriety.

Operation Soteria coordinates the response to this form of offending and takes overall command and control of criminal investigations into crimes of this nature across Northern and Western NSW Police regions.

Surge operations are also run in conjunction with officers from the Youth Command as part of a coordinated program of engagement with at-risk youth by facilitating participation in programs and activities aimed at deterring and redirecting youth from criminal activity.

Thursday, July 3 and Saturday, July 5 in the New England Police District, focusing on crime hot spots and maintaining a high-visibility public presence aimed at reassuring the communities of the North and Western Regions. Officers conducted twenty-six bail compliance checks, fifteen person searches, and ten apprehended domestic violence order compliance checks.

Additionally, Traffic and Highway Patrol officers issued forty-five Infringement notices, conducted 823 random breath tests, and charged three people for drink driving-related offences; 18 people returned positive roadside drug tests; and officers from the Youth Command conducted twenty-six engagement visits of known youth, with over a hundred youth participating in Youth Command's PCYC U-Nite program.

was charged with 17 offences. Eleven of these charges relate to an incident on Sunday, June 22 in Moree where a police vehicle was allegedly rammed at 3:30am in Jones Avenue, Moree.

He was refused bail and appeared before Moree Local Court on Monday, July 7.

A 14-year-old boy was charged with two offences for an incident on Monday, May 19, where he was a passenger in a vehicle that was allegedly stolen and involved in a pursuit with police. He was charged with aggravated break enter and steal, and be carried in conveyance. He was granted conditional before to appear before a children's court on Monday, August 11.

Tamworth inter-valley pipeline plan outdated, short-sighted: Namoi Water The two deeply flawed options clinging to life to secure Tamworth’s water supply are outdated and short-sighted. They must be abandoned immediately in favour of the one option that gives Tamworth what it needs without draining the life from downstream communities.

The Tamworth Inter-Valley Pipelines and Off-River Storages project, with pipelines pumping water to the city from Namoi Valleys Keepit or Split Rock dams, is not just absurd and impractical – it’s deeply unfair to those who farm and depend on water downstream, and the communities which rely on them for their local economic sustainability and viability.

Modelling confirms that a pipeline would only be required four times in a hundred years. Let that sink in—just four years out of a century. Yet in each of the other 96 years, up to 30 billion litres – 12,000 Olympic pools – must be kept aside in the dams.

That’s 30 billion litres of water less for the farmers growing our food and fibre downstream.

This is not an inconvenience. It is a direct, measurable threat that undermines irrigated agriculture, harms local economies, and compromises the very fabric of our regional communities. And for what? A pipeline that will sit idle 96 per cent of the time?

Farming families, workers, towns and service providers in the Namoi Valley are already living on the edge of viability thanks to state and Commonwealth water recovery for the environment, and increasing regulatory interference.

These two pipeline options represent a deeply flawed approach to water policy, prioritising short-term convenience over

longterm regional equity and sustainability.

The notion that Tamworth’s water security should come at the cost of the Namoi system and its communities is not responsible, sustainable nor justifiable, and it will face strong united opposition from across the Namoi catchment. Our communities are hardworking, passionate and tenacious this amount to water theft, dressed up as policy. The idea that Tamworth’s solution lies in sacrificing the Namoi catchment will be fiercely opposed.

The only viable long-term solution for Tamworth’s water security is a pipeline from the Manning Valley to Chaffey Dam. This project is not just preferable – it is essential.

Unlike the already overburdened Namoi system, the Manning is much more climate-resilient, where water is more consistently available and plentiful compared to the highly variable flows in the Namoi and Peel rivers. With appropriate Water Sharing Plan amendments to ensure the Manning water is only utilized when times of excessive high flows are present, this water could be sent to Chaffey Dam. Piping water from the Manning to Chaffey Dam would not only create a more secure supply for Tamworth, it would provide a strategic interconnection that builds longterm resilience across multiple valleys.

Pardon the pun, but this is not a pipe dream – it’s a practical, engineered solution with measurable benefits and the concept is viable.

The benefits go far beyond Tamworth: • Aquifer Recharge: Controlled releases from Chaffey Dam when it is full, or at a predetermined airspace level can replenish the alluvial aquifer, protecting groundwa-

ter stores critical to towns, farmers, and ecosystems.

• Efficiency Gains: Flows could be timed to reduce transmission losses in regulated water systems, improving efficiency for all users and revenue to WaterNSW. • Entitlement Support: This water could lift the reliability of water allocations local government, irrigators, industries, environmental flows in inland rivers.

• Environmental Benefits: Properly managed, these flows would also support critical low-flow and baseflow regimes for rivers, wetlands and riverine habitats, contributing to long-term environmental health.

• Drought Insurance: This infrastructure could allow for flexible, critical human need water delivery transfers to mitigate the impacts of climate extremes.

• Murray Darling Basin Plan Benefits: Any contributions which deliver any triple bottom line benefits or improvements would be welcome additions to the Basin by all communities and stakeholder groups.

These benefits are real, achievable, and underpinned by long-term planning. But they will not be realised unless the NSW government adopts a clear, direct, and measured strategy. Pursuing short-term, superficial fixes that avoid confronting water security for not just Tamworth, but wider regions, will not only delay meaningful progress – it will actively undermine the opportunity to deliver far greater, lasting benefits through proper long-term solutions.

The opposition to Namoi pipeline options is broad, informed, and united. Local councils, Chambers of Commerce, irrigation groups, extractive industries, environmental

representatives, community organisations, fishing groups, community members and individual landholders are all speaking with one voice: do not reduce the reliability of Namoi water entitlements. Do not build pipelines from Keepit or Split Rock back to Tamworth.

In stark contrast, the Manning to Peel option has broad-based rational support—a level of consensus rarely seen in water policy. And rightly so: it makes clear, practical sense to move water from a wetter region during periods of surplus to a drier region with consistently higher demand. What defies logic is the alternative—stripping reliability and deliverability from a region that is already drier than the one it is meant to supplement. This is not only counterproductive; it is irrational. It sacrifices one struggling system to offer marginal relief to another, despite the existence of a far more sustainable, strategically sound, and publicly supported solution.

The NSW government and Tamworth Regional Council must listen. The inter-valley pipeline options from Keepit or Split Rock Dams must be taken off the table now, before any more time, money, or trust is wasted.

If the government wants to leave a legacy of genuine water security, regional development, and environmental resilience, then it must choose the only viable path forward: Manning to Peel. Anything less would be an unforgivable failure of leadership.

This is our line in the sand. We will not move. And we will not let our valley be drained.
