Vale Max Estens: A life in print The community lost one of its quiet pillars on Thursday, 27 July, with the passing of former Coonabarabran Times editor Max Estens. He was 65. Max’s name was etched into the fabric of the Coonabarabran Times for more than four decades. From humble beginnings as a teenager in the print room, Max commenced duties as a tablehand and steadily rose through the ranks, mastering the art and craft of local newspaper production. From hand-pasting pages to operating the Heidelberg press and later embracing digital publishing, Max helped guide the paper through the most significant technological changes in its history. In 2023, Max put down the tools, marking an impressive 45-year career in the industry, having contributed to more than 2250 editions of the Times . But his influence never left the newsroom. Max’s legacy lives on, not only in the newspaper he helped shape, but through his daughter, Kait Britton, who now serves as editor of the Coonabarabran Times. Together with his wife and business partner, Lynne Estens, Max built a reputation for integrity, independence and unwavering service to the Warrumbungle community. Under their stewardship, the Times has remained fiercely local and proudly family-owned. Max will be remembered as a quiet achiever – a skilled printer, a steady leader, a talented photographer and devoted family man whose legacy goes beyond ink and paper to one of service, resilience and deep connection to community. He is survived by Lynne, their children, Kait, Zachary and Tori and grandchildren Cash, Jedd and Willa. The Coonabarabran Times extends its heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of love from all who knew and loved Max. A graveside service celebrating Max’s life will be held at Native Grove Cemetery, Coonabarabran, on Thursday, 8 August, commencing at 11am. In light of our loss, there will be no further editions of the Coonabarabran Times during August. The next edition of the Coonabarabran Times will be published on Thursday, 4 September.
