Coona Public School canteen reopens after fire Twelve months ago, Coonabarabran Public School’s canteen was severely damaged by fire, requiring extensive renovations. by MOLLY SHANNON With renovations now complete, the school canteen officially reopened on Tuesday, 18 February. New canteen manager, Katie Chapman said she was thrilled about the changes. “Everything is all new – it’s nice and fresh and fully equipped with stainless steel,” she said. The canteen’s reopening brings not only changes to the building, but also an updated menu. Students and staff can now enjoy freshly-made chicken burgers on Mondays and Tuesdays, hand-made nachos on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and the standard menu on Fridays. Additional options include hot dogs, and Coonabarabran Bakery treats including pies and sausage rolls. The menu follows Canteen guidelines, with 75 per cent classified as everyday foods and 25pc as occasional foods. One standout addition is the Juice Bomb, a 99.9% fruit juice drink with bubbles, which has quickly become a playground favourite on hot days. M r s Chapman has also ensu red that specialised dietar y requirements will be accommodated. “We want to make sure all students have options available to them,” she said. The response to the canteen’s reopening has been overwhelmingly positive. On opening day there was a long line of children, all excited to get their hands on some delicious canteen food. Efficiency Even school principal, Lucy Evans has been enjoying the canteen.
“My son and I get lunch there every day. The chicken burgers are my favourite so far – Katie even coats the chicken herself!” Mrs Evans emphasised that the canteen operates to serve families rather than generate profit. “We try to keep the prices down so that things are reasonable. It’s all about making things easier for families and I’m really happy with it.” Mrs Chapman’s goals for the canteen include running at cost and minimising food waste. “I call the Bakery each day and order exactly what I need, for example – two pies, four sausage rolls and two hot dog rolls. Floody delivers it within 10 minutes. This way, we have almost no waste,” she said. Canteen helpers needed Despite its success, the canteen still needs volunteers. Those interested can visit or call the school’s front office to be added to the roster. With the new canteen comes an innovative online ordering platform, which is scheduled to launch on Monday. While the traditional cash ordering system will remain in place, this new alternative will aking it easier for both parents and students to order lunch and recess, while reducing the morning rush at the canteen. “It will help parents to be organised, drop their kids off without worrying about ordering in person – and give me more time in the mornings to prepare,” Mrs Chapman said. Orders can be placed online up until 9.05am on the day, streamlining the process for everyone involved. With its fresh new look, improved menu and increased efficiency, the canteen is set to be a great asset for the school community.
