From duty to devotion Local love story forged in service

With more than four decades of combined service in the Australian Defence Force, Robyn and Kevin Barrington know what it means to serve.

Both joined the Royal Australian Air Force, where they trained, worked and navigated the demands of military life. In the lead-up to Anzac Day, the couple spoke to Coonabarabran Times journalist, Molly Shannon, about their experiences, the challenges of life in uniform and the enduring values of duty, discipline and resilience.

What ANZAC means to me

Coonabarabran High School student Georgia Heaney, pictured above with Coonabarabran RSL Sub-branch president, Kevin Barrington, provided the winning entry in the Jim Nelson Essay Competition. Georgia read her entry at both the dawn and mid-morning services in Coonabarabran on Anzac Day. Jim Nelson was a veteran of Gallipoli and the Western Front and finally settled in Coonabarabran. The annual award is donated by Jim Nelson’s grandson, David Collins, himself a veteran of the Royal Australian Airforce in Vietnam. Following is Georgia’s story: If I am completely honest, upon hearing the word ANZAC my first thoughts are driven towards death, sacrifice and loss.

Which is unsurprising considering the sheer scale of conflicts and wars that overtook our world in the 20th century, causing such pain and suffering as had not been seen before. If not still an open wound these conflicts remain scars on our society. As I’ve grown older, I’ve started to question the meaning and legacy of these scars. Are they scars of pride, or hard learnt lessons to warn us in the future? And yet, wars still plague our world in what feels like a neverending cycle of suffering and loss.

Behind this larger story are the ANZAC’s, individual soldiers, sailors, and airmen, nurses and doctors, who witnessed and experienced the front lines, a world surrounded by dark grey, and roaring fire, each with a family who worried and grieved back home. I try to empathise with their experiences, imagining the torment of saying goodbye; not knowing if it will be the last. I think about watching a best friend be dragged by death’s devastating hands. I think about the horrible thought of going into battle knowing that in a flash you could meet

your end. I think about life cut off before finding fulfilment. I think about deep pools of red and cries of unconcealed pain.

But then I question my own thinking, and ask whether behind these thoughts, the true meaning of ANZAC is hidden and misinterpreted.

Maybe when I think of ANZAC I can still think of red, but in the form of a poppy instead; the sign of new beginnings and hope.

Maybe the true meaning of ANZAC has been too far dipped into a river of storming grief and loss that we, as a nation, are truly the ones confused.

As well as pain and loss, there is also pride.

A pride that collectively fills people’s hearts when they stand up as a group to protect those who are in need of aid. Pride isn’t about being a singular individual who is strong, it’s about being in a group that could have different religions or political beliefs but are working for the same cause, regardless.

But should pride really be a motivator to join the armed forces, shouldn’t it be about the hope for a protected world?

But then I remind myself that pride isn’t supposed to be pretty, and in fact, maybe the truth to signing up on that list isn’t pride. But a sense of

unity and love for not only our countries, but also the families, friends, and loved ones.

Maybe it’s less about the deep sadness and confliction it took to sign up for it back in World War 1 and 2, but about the love that drove them to.

And the love that is still driving people to join the army today, continuing a legacy.

It’s people like the Coonabarabran Cadets that continue this legacy. Maybe they are motivated by their mum, or a relative that was involved in the armed forces. Maybe they went to dinner at the pub and saw the clocktower on the way past, and felt the need to continue that legacy.

People fought for us to live our lives to the fullest today; they fought for us to continue growing.

They still fight.

Maybe ANZAC isn’t about war, maybe it isn’t even about being a soldier.

ANZAC is being able to tell your child that no matter what happens, there is a nation that is ready to defend you – defend us.

That we aren’t defenceless, that we help each other, that regardless of the adversity we will unite to defend a common cause.

From the firs t time Australian troops fought as a nation in the

Boer War, through the galvanising events at ANZAC cove, through the wars and peacekeeping actions, Australian troops have always represented the values of our nation.

They fight for us to enjoy blissful sunny mornings and the love around a Christmas dinner.

We see a continuation of this through the people apart of ANZAC today.

To n i g h t w h e n y o u lay in bed, I want you to take a moment to stop and reflect on the seemingly unnoteworthy privileges you have. The little moments in life that make you happy, that aren’t to do with money or material items.

A sacrifice is made for these moments, so today I am here asking you to appreciate them.

So, to answer the question: what does ANZAC mean to me?

To me, ANZAC is the legacy of people coming together to defend what is right and those in need.

It inspires me to be the best version of myself, living life to the fullest, while still noting the bravery and courage people face for us as a nation.

Live for ANZAC. Protect for ANZAC. Love for ANZAC. Georgia Heaney

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR  editor@coonabarabrantimes.com Water rates I have written a couple of letters to you in recent weeks concerning the way in which Council clerks handle the complaints I have had with my water rates notices. As I am pretty sure I am not the only one who has had problems of this nature, I thought it worthwhile outlining the issues so that your readers may understand more about the problems the Council seems to have in handling these matters.

In short, since June 2023 to the present day, my average daily consumption of water has ranged from anywhere between 75133 litres per day. This is, I believe, reasonable and within expectations for an elderly man, living alone who does not use water for any other purpose other than basic household needs. I do not use any water on my garden.

According to Council’s water-rates bills, there have been two exceptions to this usage pattern and they have billed me accordingly. Firstly, in the 21 days between 5 March and 27 March 2024, Council asserts that my daily usage averaged 857 litres, which equated to an increase of up to approximately 900% over normal. This coincided with the change over from an old to a new water meter on 27 March 2024.

It is my contention that in all the circumstances, this bill cannot be correct

and I challenged it with Council. The most likely explanation is a misread or damage of the old meter on removal.

So far, the matter remains unresolved, but to avoid the experience of others who were passed on to the debt collectors in similar circumstances, I have paid this account in part.

Secondly, my initial bill for the 91-day period ending 19 December 2024 claimed a daily average usage of 484 litres. Following ongoing entreaties by me, including letters to the mayor and the general manager, Council has now accepted the veracity of my claim and has re-issued the bill for something a bit closer to reality.

Whilst I am grateful for Council’s consideration and admission of a misread of my meter on this second issue, the first matter remains unresolved.

Also, the broader issue relates to the hoops I was made jump through to get the matters to this point. I should not have to spend hours writing to the mayor and general manager to get the matter resolved. As a ratepayer, I am not satisfied with the appalling service provided by faceless clerks in resolving this matter expeditiously.

I have been both disrespected and stonewalled by those apparently more interested in their own comfortable sinecures than going out of their

way to give reasonable consideration to the matters raised by ratepayers, especially the elderly and vulnerable.

There comes a time when common decency and common sense is called for.

As I am sure there are a great many others around town who have had a similar experience, my advice to Council staff is to start to focus on client service and understand that the Council exists to serve ratepayers, not the other way around.

Sky high success for young Baradine photographer A young student has captured an impressive image of a military aircraft in a fly-over Baradine on Anzac Day.

Robyn grew up in the Riverina town of Leeton, joining the Air Force in 1972 as a way to fast track her nursing degree.

Kevin joined the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in 1966 and had a long and successful career before retiring in 2003.

The Women’s Auxiliary Australian Air Force was founded in 1941, before being disbanded shortly after in 1947.

In 1950, the Women’s Royal Australian Air Force (WRAAF) was formed and Robyn was a part of this second wave.

In the early 1980s, the WRAAF was disbanded and members were absorbed into the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).

“I was doing my RNs’ [Registered Nurse] and the training school stopped halfway through my training,” Robyn said.

“I decided that I didn’t want to have to wait another three years to do it…so I looked around and the Air Force was offering medical courses and I thought that would be really handy.

“So, I joined as a medical orderly and then found the course had also been delayed by another nine months because they needed so many people to conduct the course.

“But I decided that I wasn’t going to wait that long, so I moved into medical administration and I was based in Adelaide for my recruit training.”

This was at a time when women in the Defence Forces were not allowed to use firearms or train with the equipment.

However, Robyn recalls there was a lot of drilling, exercise and marching.

“When we got off at Adelaide, we came to the training course that taught the secretarial skills and typing in Wagga Wagga,” she said.

“I was there during the Wagga floods, and we were dragged out of our beds at one o’clock in the morning to fill sandbags.

“It was also when Wagga residents had a kind of ‘us’ and ‘them’ attitude towards the civilians and the military – it was an interesting time.

“After that, I was posted directly to the Director General of Air Force Health, which was with Air Vice Marshal Morgan, based out of Fairbairn Air Base, but actually working in Canberra.”

This is where she was working when Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin, and Robyn recalled working very long days administrating the medical side of the evacuation and recovery.

However, because Robyn wasn’t working at an on-base medical centre during this time, she wasn’t receiving the skills needed to pass her Corporal’s tests.

She requested a transfer and was sent to Williamtown Air Base, near Newcastle.

“When I got there, I was in the medical section as a Corporal where I was maintaining medical records – a bit like a medical receptionist would be in a doctor’s surgery.

“That medical centre was based very close to tech flight, where they were doing all the instrument testing of jet engines, and I have a little bit of hearing loss from that.”

Robyn met her future husband during a search-and-rescue training session, after which they fell in love.

“Kevin was on search-and-rescue helicopters and I got winched out to assist a couple of times,” Robyn said.

Born and bred in Coonabarabran, Kevin had a curiosity towards the RAAF, which was encouraged by his grandfather.

“My grandfather offered me lots of technical experiences, even when I was in primary school, and every time I visited Sydney, I’d go and visit ships,” Kevin said.

“I would walk past engineers working on big generators and crankshafts – and then I became interested in science.

“I saw some brochures and I knew I needed a job and I needed to get out of my parents’ hair, and the brochures the Air Force sent me were very attractive.

“So I joined up, intending to be an engine fitter, but decided to become an instrument fitter after I’d joined.”

Training as a technician made him a vital member of the RAAF, and it took him all over Australia and the world.

It also made him a more independent flyer when he eventually became a pilot.

“Being an instrument fitter is a process, but you get proficient on various instruments.

“WRAAF’s do get used like that for training, they winch you out and leave you in strange places.”

Robyn was at Williamtown for 10 months before transferring to Defence Force recruiting in Brisbane, where she assisted in testing all new entries into Army, Navy and Air Force.

“Kevin went to the Middle East while we were going steady and when he came back in 1978, we got married and I had to leave the Defence Force.”

These days, much has changed for women who are part of the ADF, making it easier and more accessible for them to join.

Women are no longer required to resign from the ADF if they are married, have children, or meet someone within the ADF and decide to get married.

Despite having to leave her career in the Air Force, Robyn stayed involved in some practices.

Kevin was stationed to Papua New Guinea, so Robyn and two of their children also made the move.

While living overseas, Robyn helped with recruitment as well as education for women and families of those who could potentially relocate to Australia.

“Kevin was posted in Papua New Guinea as the SO (Staff Operator) OPS directions operations.

“And we had four kids by then, so the eldest ones went to boarding school because we were told ‘it’s a difficult post, it’s a dangerous post’.

“So we put the eldest into boarding school and we had the two youngest ones with us that went to the international schools in Port Moresby.”

Robyn went on to work for the Defence Corporation Management Team, which included assessing Papua New Guinea Constabulary and the Papua New Guinea Defence Forces.

“When they were sent over to Australia, they had to know the Australian standards, so it was our management team that would manage those people.

“I would instruct the wives, most of whom were from the villages, couldn’t speak English and had no idea about life in Australia.

“So I had to teach them about how Australia’s medical and educational systems worked.”

Fo l l ow i ng Kevi n’s reti rement, the fa m i l y moved back to Coonabarabran and settled onto Kevin’s family farm.

Today, Robyn is the secretary of the Coonabarabran RSL Subbranch and plays an active role in commemorative services.

Recently, Robyn and Kevin spoke to Coonabarabran Army Cadets, sharing their experiences and memories of the ADF. Robyn believes a career in the Australian Defence Forces to be a fulfilling job and a place of community.

And for those who want to join and experience it themselves, Robyn’s advice is simple.

“Stick to it.”

“I’ve still got a fair bit of a record as far as that proficiency goes.

“It was actually really handy, because later on I flew Caribous.

My proficiency as an airman, working on Caribous, was all recorded.

“When I became a pilot, the same record showed I was already qualified in a number of maintenance activities on the Caribou.

So I was able to carry that over and continue as a maintenance independent inspector while flying.”

Kevin specifically flew the DHC-4, also known as the Caribou.

The Caribou is a twin-engine cargo aircraft with short takeoff and landing capabilities, designed for tactical operations in remote or harsh terrains.

Kevin has a great appreciation for the aircraft and in 2009, when the RAAF was looking to replace it, Kevin helped them find one.

“C-27J Spartan is the Caribou replacement, though it can’t operate to Torres Strait. There might be a couple of airfields that can operate to Torres Strait, but the Caribou could operate to a huge number of airfields in Torres Strait,” Kevin said.

In his 36-year career, Kevin was based in Papua New Guinea, the Middle East between Egypt and Israel, and places all over Australia such as Canberra and the Northern Territory.

Before his marriage to Robyn, Kevin had been in Papua New Guinea and flew on the short take-off and landing strips.

These strips were dangerous and placed on the tips of mountains, but Kevin found being able to fly them to be both satisfying and thrilling.

For seven-and-a-half years, Kevin flew the Bell UH-1H Iroquois, which then took him to the Middle East for peacekeeping duties.

He was part of the Second United Nations Emergency Force, often referred to as UNEF II. He had many roles within the peacekeepers, but said rarely, was it dull.

“There were lots of unusual tasks, but one standout was in the Sinai Peninsula, moving observation towers. I ferried these observation towers and they were standing so that they had to be picked up and put on a cement base.

“So the way I did it, was I flew with about five minutes’ worth of fuel in the tanks, with a tanker truck going from location to location; there were about five locations and just refuelling enough to get to the next location.

“Then picking the unit up, single pilot, there was a particular radio that we had in the aircraft that had to be removed, and put it down on its base, refuel, and then go to the next one. That was a great job.”

Kevin said he had enjoyed a lot of wonderful experiences.

“I’ve got an album at home where I took photos of pulling Zeros and Betty bombers and stuff like that to bits at Gasmata in New Britain.

So that was quite special, you know, the war was finished in 1945 and there we were in 1973.

“The airfield was lined with Japanese wrecks in Gasmata, on the southern side of New Britain. It was the wet season for the southern side of New Britain, so it was pretty difficult weather, but we managed to do a fair bit of work.”

Kevin has worked to mentor cadets and young people, encouraging them to “get out there and try out the ADF”.

While in Papua New Guinea, he was the liaison between the Air Force and the cadets, and he took them out to walk the Kokoda Track; an important part of Australian war history where soldiers in WWII walked to gain an advantage against Japanese troops in the war.

“To walk the Kokoda Track is probably harder than Mount Giluwe, because it was over nine days. And we carried everything on our back.

Everything. No resupply for nine days.

“I think it was a terrific experience. You’ve got the achievement, but you’ve also got the experience of interaction along the way. We did a five-hour diversion into Lake Myola to have a look at more downed aircraft.”

Kevin and Robyn are proud of their time with the RAAF, having made lifelong friends, found lasting passions and supporting others on their journeys.

These days, the Bar r ingtons organise Coonabarabran’s annual ANZAC Day memorial service and help keep Coonabarabran RSL Subbranch operating.

With Kevin as president and Robyn as secretary, their work is widely appreciated throughout the town.

Kevin and Robyn said they are always looking for more members and would love it if more young people would join.

ANZAC DAY 2025: COONABARABRAN

Coonabarabran gathers to honour 110 years of ANZAC legacy A solemn crowd gathered at the Clock Tower Cenotaph in Coonabarabran at 11am on Anzac Day to remember the courage, sacrifice and endurance of Australia’s servicemen and women, with the earlier dawn service also well attended.

“Today marks 110 years since the Gallipoli landings, a period of war that would cause much loss of limb and life. We are assembled here on the date of that first landing at Gallipoli, the day now immortalised in history, the day the young men of the then young Australia, by their deeds and sacrifice, demonstrated to the world that Australia was truly a nation,” said Mr Kevin Barrington, C o o n a b a rabran RSL Sub-branch president, as he opened this year’s

Anzac Day service.

Held beneath a bright autumn sky, the ceremony was attended by returned service men and women, local residents, school students and dignitaries.

Music was provided by the Orbital Swing Band, while hymns such as Abide With Me and Lead Kindly Light were movingly performed by the Coonabarabran Men’s Choir and the Coonabarabran Community Choir.

address, reflecting deeply on the significance of the day.

“Anzac Day is a very special day in the life of our country. It is special because it is the day all sorts of emotions pass through our minds.... we acknowledge our predecessors in appreciation and hear the challenge that we should never grow weak for our nation,” he said.

Mr Barrington spoke of Australia’s involvement in conflicts even before Federation, noting that it was the First World War

that tested the nation most.

“Gallipoli is so indelibly written into our minds because of this first great and sudden conflict,” he said.

He detailed the strategic hardships faced by the Allies, the fierce resistance from the Turkish defenders and the eventual decision to evacuate by December 1915. He honoured leaders such as Major General William Bridges and later General Sir Brudenell White, whose fates would become part

of Australia’s complex wartime story.

Special prayers were led by the captains of St Lawrence’s, Coonabarabran Public, and Coonabarabran High Schools, with a moving prayer for peace delivered by 101-yearold patron and returned serviceman, Mr Bill Wilkin.

Adding to the spirit of remembrance, Georgia Heaney from Coonabarabran High School read her winning Anzac essay, capturing the resilience and spirit

of the Anzacs in words that deeply moved those gathered.

Mr Barrington also reminded those present that this year marks 80 years since Victory in the Pacific, reflecting on the brutal campaigns fought in New Guinea and the sacrifice of many, including those connected to the Coonabarabran community such as the late Lance Sergeant Lester Wong See. “Lester served with the 2/12 Battalion in the battles at Buna and Sanananda, where

his battalion suffered horrendous losses to leave only a few men standing. This occurred from New Year’s Day 1943 into January 1943.”

As the Last Post sounded and a minute’s silence was observed, Coonabarabran paused to remember not only the fallen, but all those who have served, ensuring that the spirit of the ANZAC continues to live on in the heart of the nation.

Pride and remembrance soar over Baradine Against a backdrop of clear skies a tribute fly-over roared overhead, while the stirring sound of Celtic pipes and drums led marchers through the town’s main street in a memorable Baradine Anzac Day tribute.

Local schools made heartfelt contributions to the service, led by S t J oh n’s P r i m a r y S chool, ref lecting on the community’s deep pr ide a nd endu r i ng commitment to honouring the sacrifices

o f p a s t a nd pr e s ent servicemen and women.

Wreaths were laid, followed by a minute’s silence.

Guest speaker at the service, former Baradine resident, Kelvin Head, read a tribute to his father written by his d aug ht er, K at r i n a Head, for her Year 8 English assignment. “ M y g r a n d f a t h e r, Allan Victor Head fought for our country and was a survivor. He was 21 years old when he left Australia in January 1940 to go and fight the Japanese. He trained at B at hu r s t f o r s i x months before moving on to Wollongong, where they placed barbed wire

along the coastline for several miles to contain the Japanese in case they landed in the area,” Mr Head related.

“He was there for 18 months before sailing to New Guinea in 1942, landing in Port Moresby.

His battalion fought the Japanese in the Owen Stanley Range and were successful in stopping them, although two of h i s best mat es wer e killed. “ Fol low i n g a br ief r et u r n t o Aust ra l i a , he retu r ned to the battleg round in New Guinea. The men were constantly in wet cloth i ng due t o the incessant rain. T hey would rinse their clothes in rivers or streams and put them back on, wet.

Sometimes their boots were not removed for days and days on end.

W hat sleep they had was spent on a ground

sheet with another over them to shelter from the rain. They lived on canned meat and dry biscu its, wh ich were dropped by plane. “ W h e n t h e e n e my weakened, the Australians moved over the range and through the jungle cutting tracks and road, making easier access for the troops. My grandfather was eventually flown to Merauke to patrol and keep the peace.

“He returned to Cairns in northern Queensland in December 1945, managing to make it home to Ba rad ine in time for Christmas.”

Following the service, the Baradine RSL Sub-Branch and the Baradine Women’s Auxiliar y ser ved a b a r b e c ue lu n c h a nd traditional A nzac biscuits.

NSW Pol ice have stated that of f icer s attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District began an investigation after a .223 calibre Remington rifle was reported stolen from a property on Creenaunes Lane between 7pm on Wednesday, 16 April and 1pm on Saturday, 19 April.

Police said they were told the home had been broken into and the rifle stolen from a vehicle on the property.

“The owner was given a firearms’ licence notice of suspension and the remaining firearms were seized,” a police spokesperson said.

“A s i n q u i r i e s co nt i n u e, a nyo n e w i t h information about this incident is urged to contact Coonabarabran Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”

Information is treated in strict confidence and the public is reminded not to report information via NSW Police social media pages.

Meanwhile, Vacation Care kids channel led thei r creativity into art projects, particularly wh i le c elebr at i n g World A r t Day by de c orat i ng the wooden playhouse.

They used painted leaves t o creat e nature pr ints and ad o r n e d t h e r o o f with stars, planets, and the Milky Way. Children also enjoyed relaxed tree climbing sessions, sha r i ng hol id ay pla ns f r om thei r leafy perches.

To top it all off, Easter activ ities brought joy across both programs.

Egg hunts, baking, s t o r y t e l l i n g , a nd crafts kept the festive spirit alive, ensuring a fun-filled week for all.

Under an achinglyb l u e s k y, w e a l l tucked our shirts in and straightened our ties as we gathered with other school and community groups to show our respect and pr ide in honour ing our servicemen and women from now and yesteryear.

As school leaders donned blazers and wreaths and practiced their contribution to the prayers i n the ANZAC Day service at the Coonabarabran clocktower, we formed two lines and, accompanied by many staff, marched down John Street to the band.

We wore our uniform p r o ud l y a n d w e r e su itably respectf u l throughout the morning. We were all glad to see each other and exchange Easteholiday stories.

T here was much reminiscence about the interesting and engag i ng science / Easter rotations day at the end of last term.

Everyone participated i n fou r activ ities which included Easter rockets, Easter biscuit de c orat i ng, ba sket making and lots of ar t and science, cu lm i nati ng i n a dancing parade around the playground with the magical reward of chocolate eggs.

We are all excited and glad to be back and looking forward to a great term two. We were excited to welcome our state swimmers Emma Johnston and Savannah Swanson back from their competition. We are very proud of their achievements in the pool.

Our leaders will be putting their newlyhoned sk i l ls i nt o practice after attending a leadership camp in the last week of term. Held in the Warrumbungle Nationa l Pa rk a nd connecting and guiding young leaders from across the region, our captains and vice captains loved every minute of being there.

Binnaway Races set to bounce back in style After last year’s last-minute washout, the Binnaway Jockey Club is ready to bounce back in style for the 2025 Autumn Race Meet, scheduled for this Saturday, 3 May. Celebrating its 112th year, the club is hopeful for clear skies and a big crowd as the community gathers once again for one of t he d i st r ic t ’s most -loved a n nua l events.

Action-packed Narrabri Show has something for everyone The Narrabri Show is gearing up to be an action-packed weekend, with plenty to see and do.

Gates open on Friday morning, May 2, and the action of the show runs across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

An array of entertainment and activities is again on offer, ensuring there is something for everyone.

The Friday night show opening is going to be spectacular, with the official opening of the show, a full rodeo and the BPOZ mechanical bull operating from 5-8pm.

The rodeo action on Friday night starts from 5pm, with the main performance from 6pm. There’ll be entertainment on offer as well as for rodeo-goers.

Popular Narrabri entertainer Leon Cunningham will perform live from 9pm.

But the fun of the show doesn’t stop on Friday.

There’s plenty to do across the weekend, including fireworks and children’s entertainment, and ending the Saturday night with live music at the bar.

If you’re interested in horses, there are a whole range of equine events across the weekend.

Or, if you prefer the agricultural side of the show, there’s stud cattle judging on Saturday, as well as a

shearing demonstration.

Local creatives feature prominently as well, with a range of artistic sections and displays in the pavilions.

Traditionally, the pavilions are packed with entries across art, craft, photography, cooking and preserves, decorated cakes, home produce, horticulture and poultry.

Be sure to see the stunning floral entries in the horticulture pavilion.

The show society also asks people to use the Ugoa Street entrance to the show, with ample parking available.

Entrance via the Wukawa Street gate is typically reserved for show exhibitors and officials only.

Tickets this year are again being sold online and tickets can be purchased from 123tix.com.au or scan the QR code included with this article.

An online family day pass (two adults and up to three children) is $38, an adult day pass (over 15-years-old) costs $16, pensioner tickets are $6, child tickets (aged 5-15) will be $6 and children under five are entitled to free entry.

At the gate, show-goers can present their tickets in electronic form or they can also bring along a printed version of their ticket.

Saturday night is the highlight of Narrabri Show’s entertainment offering, with its 7pm Santos fireworks show set to light up the Narrabri sky. The night draws to a close with a performance by Locust from 8.30pm.

Variety aplenty at the Narrabri Show With the Narrabri Show this weekend, anticipation is growing, and the show society is excited to announce a variety of new acts coming for the show weekend starting from Friday, May 2.

Show society president, Wendy McNair and secretary, Judy Michell, are eager for the public to come and experience what the show has to offer this year.

“Along with the usual events like the highly anticipated rodeo, strong continuant of side shows, judging and showgirls, pavilion and livestock entries, we have some new additions coming this year,” Wendy said.

Magic will be sprinkled over Narrabri Showgrounds with the arrival of Fairy La La Land! Prepare to be wowed by an exciting display of scaly friends with the WOW Reptile Encounters. To tag along in this excitement is a new act, Walter Whip and The Flames. A jaw-dropping western performance of whip cracking and fire stunts.

Other new additions include the introduction of chooks for the junior judging. As well as a new section for the produce pavilion, labelled agricultural produce, with a large selection of grains for entry.

This includes durum wheat, barley, canola, sorghum, chickpeas, cotton seed and cotton.

It will be business in front and party in the back at the show this year with the much-loved mullet competition. Who will be named the mullet champion? Keep it long and show off your shake to take home the trophy!

“For the music portion of the show, we have talented local, Leon Cunningham performing Friday night after the rodeo.

“As well as the local band, Locust, performing Saturday night after the fireworks,” Judy said.

“We will be running our own canteen and bar this year, which is exciting. It’s great we could get those amenities up and running to use,” Wendy said.

Woman allegedly hit Police again appeal police with vehicle for information about Police news A woman faced court last week, charged after allegedly hitting a police officer with a vehicle.

About 12pm on Tuesday, April 22, officers attached to New England Police District were called to a home on Sullivan Place, Moree, with reports of a dispute.

Upon arrival, police spoke with a 42-year-old woman before another woman, aged 43 – who police understand is known to her – arrived and allegedly drove the

vehicle at speed towards two parked police vehicles.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle as it approached, the woman allegedly ignored the direction and continued to drive before hitting a police officer – a 34-year-old man – with the vehicle, causing swelling and bruising to his right leg.

A man – aged 41 – and a child aged 2 – were passengers in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

The woman allegedly made no attempt to stop or render aid and parked the vehicle in a driveway on Sullivan Place.

She was arrested and taken to Moree Police Station, where she was charged with three counts of intimidate police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm, assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, knowingly drive vehicle in manner menaces other, fail to stop and assist after impact cause injury, and drive motor vehicle while licence suspended. She was refused bail and appeared before Armidale Local Court on Wednesday, April 23 where she was formally refused bail to face Moree Local Court on Monday, April 28.

Urgent overhaul of green tape needed: NSW Farmers Farmers have called on federal politicians to commit to an urgent overhaul of the nation’s environmental policies that are hurting both farmers and the landscape.

NSW Farmers’ Conservation and Resource Management Committee chair Bronwyn Petrie said the federal government’s water buybacks were just one of many unworkable policies that were not only constricting food and fibre production but failing to deliver for the environment.

“There’s no doubt we need action to end our cost-of-living crisis, but when it comes to climate and caring for our landscape, we’re hearing nothing but crickets

this federal election,” Mrs Petrie said.

“The federal government is buying up the water that we need to grow food and fibre, and not only is our Basin not benefiting, but our farmers and their communities are being stripped of their lifeblood.

“There’s so much green tape that’s simply creating a lose-lose situation where the landscape hurts, and farmers do too – and that must change, before it’s too late to do anything at all.”

Emissions targets were another looming environmental reform that Mrs Petrie urged federal politicians of all sides to engage with

agriculture around to ensure food security was not put at risk.

“We need realistic, viable emissions reduction strategies, not aspirational ones that expect farmers to use electric tractors that don’t exist and report on emissions we can’t track,” Mrs Petrie said.

“Sustainability does not need to come at the cost of productivity in the agricultural sector.

"Not only did farmers meet the Kyoto targets for the whole of Australia, but they have significantly reduced emissions within the agricultural industry and continue to implement further improvements while protecting our natural environment and ecosystems.”

Boggabilla incident Police news Police are re-appealing for information as an investigation into a break and enter and crash at Boggabilla earlier this year continues.

About 6.45am on Friday, February 21, officers attached to New England Police District were called to a home on Yeoman Street, Boggabilla, after reports of a break and enter.

Police were told two unknown men arrived at the home on a red Honda trailbike – believed to be stolen – before forcing entry into the home.

Shortly after, an occupant of the home and another man – both aged in their 60s – confronted one of the men.

Following an altercation, the occupant sustained an injury to his arm before the unknown men fled the scene on the trailbike.

A woman inside the home – also aged in her 60s – was not injured.

Shortly after, a Mitsubishi Triton ute and the trailbike reportedly collided near Yeoman Street, Boggabilla.

A 20-year-old man – believed to be the trailbike’s pillion

passenger – was treated at the scene by Queensland Ambulance.

He was taken to Goondiwindi Hospital and was later flown to Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane for further treatment.

He has since been released from hospital.

The trailbike rider ran from the scene.

The driver of the Mitsubishi was not injured.

Crime scenes were established at both sites in Boggabilla, and police commenced an investigation into the incident, under Strike Force Canmore.

Police seized the Mitsubishi Triton ute from an address in Goondiwindi, and the Honda trailbike, for forensic examination.

As investigations continue, police are appealing for anyone with information, including dashcam, to contact Moree Detectives or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Survey says ... cost of living, health and water are biggest election issues Cost of living, health and water are the three most critical issues at the 2025 federal election, according to voters who took part in an election survey published in print and online by Collective Media (publisher of The Courier, Wee Waa News, Gunnedah Times and North West Magazine).

Almost 300 voters responded, with almost 85 per cent highlighting cost of living as their primary concern. Almost 80 per cent also listed health, while almost 75 per cent also selected water.

Among the least important issues were climate change (77 per cent said it was least important) and internet access (84 per cent said it was least important).

In regards to energy, almost 85 per cent listed cheaper energy being more important than reducing carbon emissions.

Survey results also showed strong support for nuclear power in Australia (almost 78 per cent). Almost 73 per cent would also support a nuclear power plant in the North West.

When it comes to voting, almost 80 per cent indicated they were most likely to vote for the Liberal National Party Coalition, almost 10 per cent for Labor, almost six per cent for a minor party, almost four per cent for an independent and almost

one per cent for the Greens.

Peter Dutton was the preferred prime minister by almost 75 per cent of respondents, 20 per cent for Anthony Albanese and almost five per cent said they were unsure or marked neither on their survey.

When marking from one to five (one being least concerned and five being most concerned) on issues including global security, cost of living, housing availability, water buybacks and road and transport infrastructure, the majority of respondents listed road and transport infrastructure as the greatest importance (64 per cent marked this issue as a ‘5’).

All issues generally received a score of three or greater.

Many respondents also indicated their single most important issue for the election as well as specific responses in relation to local and national issues.

Some of the responses to the single most important issue question: “Truthful and transparent government”, “less wastage of taxpayer funds”, “avoid hung parliament”, “cost of living”, “cost of electricity”, “availability of doctors is almost non-existent”, “crime in our region”, “increasing cost of groceries”, “more specialists in Tamworth and Dubbo”, “change of government”, “national debt”, “lower

immigration” and “more defence spending”.

Almost 150 respondents listed either cost of living, electricity or groceries as the single greatest issue. Many others also listed either crime or youth crime (20 respondents).

Other responses on the surveys include: “No wind towers”, “updates to rural hospitals”, “more doctors in hospitals”, “more dams, more gas, mining and nuclear”, “protect our borders”, “spend more on security”, “safer roads”, “deterioration of roads”, “drastic knock-on effects of water buybacks”, “water availability in drought”, “complete the Inland Rail”, “stop taking over farming land”, “open the Narrabri gas reserves”, “start the coal seam gas exploration”, “no solar on prime agricultural land”, “scrap zero carbon targets”, “safe, affordable aged rentals”, “Inland Rail - get the trucks off the highways”, “regional air services are reducing and expensive”, “accountability for government spending”, “affordable aged

care”, “need for more police officers”, “must increase regional population”, “support our farmers”, “more support for local business”, “new industries needed to replace mining when they close”, “protect our farmland from gas extraction and coal mining”, “reliable and cheaper energy sources”, “an airline flying into Narrabri preferably Qantas”, “lack of funding for roads”, “federal and state governments need to spend more to fix up our roads” and “more aged care facilities available”.

Specific projects that need to be prioritised for the North West region include the Narrabri gas project (this was listed by 20 respondents) and Inland Rail (five respondents). Many others selected broader issues including airports, rail and road upgrades, health and hospitals.

The election survey was published online as well as in the printed editions of The Courier, Wee Waa News, Gunnedah Times and North West Magazine (published by Collective Media).
