COONABARABRAN – THE ASTRONOMY CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA

Australia Day fun FULL COVERAGE INSIDE

Water, ice and air-conditioning kept everyone cool before the afternoon storm in Coonabarabran on Australia Day. by CHRIS WARD There were several ways for residents to beat the heat on Australia Day. Ear ly morning bowlers got their game in at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club before heading back into the air-conditioning to cool down, along with a few cold drinks, before the heat of the day set in. Later that afternoon a great crowd came together at the Coonabarabran Golf Club for the traditional slip ‘n slide action. More than 30 youngsters and the young at hea r t were lined up for a turn at any one time fo r the traditional event. A free barbecue and ice slushies were also on offer. Many residents and fam i l ies at tended the Coonabarabran Swimming Po o l fo r t h e a f te r n o o n

session, taking advantage of the free entry in a bid to beat the heat. Things cooled down later in the evening as Mother Nature came through with a welcome storm that rolled through town. Zoe H o l co m be, f ro m the Coonabarabran Golf Cl ub, sa id the Aus t ra l ia Day activities went to plan, despite the late storm. “It was a really great day. Everyone had a lot of fun and the slide was massively popular,” she said. “The line up for that at one point was huge. “The whole day ran very smoothly. “It was only the stor m that came through in the last hour that disrupted the awards ceremony a bit, but we just moved everything inside. “Other than that it was a great day!”

The Coonabarabran Golf Club’s slip ‘n slide was a popular way to cool off on Australia Day.
