Rotary...in the beginning
Next week, the Rotary Club of Coonabarabran will celebrate its 75th anniversary, a chance to look back at what we have achieved and enjoyed, and to share some of this with you! Coonabarabran Rotar y Club owes a great deal to Gunnedah businessman Bill McDonagh, who spearheaded the move to form a club in this town. The new group was admit ted to membership in Rotary on 13 May 1949,
with some familiar names amongs t the 20 char ter members – Ron Dive, Sid Brain, Mac Law, John Spragg, Gordon Blackman, Bill Neilsen, Jack Clare and Frank McKeon. For various reasons, the presentation Charter dinner
was not held until 20 August 1949. It started with cocktails at the Imperial Hotel, then moved to the annex of the Savoy Theatre for dinner with visiting Rotarians from eight clubs in the area. The dinner was prepared by the CWA and, later in
the eve ning, suppe r was ser ved by a commit tee for Wendy Gardiner (now Sevil), who was an entrant in the Coonabarabran Central School’s Princess Competition. Several gifts were presented to the club, some
of which are still in regular use – such as the gong and the bird, always useful when collecting coins. The Rotary Club of Coonabarabran was up and running. It seems as if we have been running ever since!
In this anniversary feature, you will find examples of some of the ways the club has enriched our Coonabarabran community through its programs and projects, and, in so doing, provided its members with enjoyment and friendship.
THE SKATE PARK The building of the Coonabarabran Skate Park began in 2004, when a generous donation was given to the club by Peter Chrystal in gratitude for help he received from the club when he was injured some years previously. The park was opened in April 2005 by Peter Chrystal and Amanda Burton, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, who took the first of ficial skate ride in front of Warrumbungle Shire Council mayor Peter Shinton, Rotary president Jo Wilkin, and a large crowd.
