COONABARABRAN – THE ASTRONOMY CAPITAL OF AUSTRALIA
SPECIAL EDITION: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Thompson makes her mark on the rodeo circuit One young Coonabarabran woman has had a meteoric rise through the rodeo ranks. by CHRIS WARD Emma Thompson first graced the scene back in 2017 and wasted no time in making her mark on the competition. Just one year later, in 2018, she won the ABCRA Southe r n Zone Ba r rel Raci ng Rook ie title, the Australian Bar rel Racing Rookie Title and came third in the Australian standings. That same yea r, af te r winning a major rodeo in Stroud, Emma qualified for the World Championship semi-finals held in Oklahoma in the United St a t e s a n d s p e n t t i m e overseas. In 2021 Emma and her horse, Eddie, expanded t h e i r ex p e r t i s e to s te e r undecorating, becoming successful in both disciplines. After the three-day event Emma and Eddie had won the Australian Rookie Steer undeco rating titles and came runner-up Australian

While horsemanship is in her blood, Emma said it was a stroke of luck that led her to try out barrel racing on the rodeo circuit. “Mum and dad were into showing and showjumping and that sort of thing,” she said. “Honestly, it al l came about because I ended up with a bastard of a horse! “ H e wo u l d n’t ta ke to anything else so I thought I’d try him at barrel racing.” And the deci s i on ha s obvious ly pa id of f, w ith the humble rider crediting Eddie w ith much of her succes s and ex p res s i ng how the two have created an unbreakable bond. While she admitted that, at times, the lifestyle could be lonely, Emma said she wouldn’t have things any other way.
