All aboard: steam train rolls into Binnaway

A 130-year-old steam engine brought around 200 passengers on a journey from Dubbo to Binnaway on Monday, 2 October 2023.

by JANE PHILLIPS Organised and driven by Lachlan Va l l ey Ra i l w a y, t h e l o c o m ot i ve expedition was one of a number of steam train experiences held from Dubbo over the long weekend.

Lachlan Valley Railway locomotive maintenance and passenger attendant, David Henderson said with other train events taking place on the long weekend, the g roup decided to r un a s team t ra i n to Binnaway.

“T he re a re othe r event s i n the H u n t e r Va l l e y a n d S y d n e y t h i s weekend so we thought, why not run a train out this way,” Mr Henderson said.

“We know Binnaway has a strong rail heritage and we haven’t brought a steam engine out here for 30 years.”

Thorough maintenance prior to the

journey saw the locomotive make the return journey without a hitch.

“For the age of the engine it’s still going strong.

“It never missed a beat.”

“It’s been a beautiful day out with lovely weather, great company and a beautiful old train,” Mrs Bennetts said.

For Scott Ellery, from Eumungerie, it was his f i r st t ra i n r ide, w ith his grandmother, April Wright, taking him on the journey.

“It was good,” Scott said.

“Something new and definitely enjoyable!”

Visitors enjoyed lunch provided by the Bi nnaway Lions Cl ub, Binnaway Tennis Club and Binnaway Show Societ y at the B i n na way Showgrounds.

Peter Benson, Denise Towers and Kylie and Joel Bennetts, from Merrygoen, enjoyed lunch in Binnaway after the train journey.

Optus customers want to opt out Over the last few months, Coonabarabran residents on Optus mobile plans have been plagued with constant and often lengthy outages to the service, causing many to consider moving to another network… if they can!

by JIMMY WHALAN On Tuesday, 3 October 2023 numerous Optus customers across the Warrumbungle Shire a n d , i n p a r t i c u l a r, Coonabarabran, were lef t w it hout s er v ic e from morning to late in the night, with many f r ustrated about the lack of explanation from Optus and why the issue keeps happening.

Of these frustrated customers, some have even found themselves in emergency situations with no service, meaning they had no way to inform their family.

O thers have fou nd themselves on a plan with Optus, and are unable to switch providers until the end of the contract.

Reports of these issues with Optus service have been ongoing since 2021, with claims of outages having increased in the last few months.

Locals O n T u e s d a y, t h e Coonabarabran Times reached out t o lo c a l Optus users through its

Facebook page to gain an insight into their ex p er ienc e w it h t he service…or lack thereof!

One local customer, Emma McDonald, explained her issues with the service began three yea rs ago, when she moved from Mendooran to Coonabarabran.

“Mendooran is in the middle of nowhere and we had perfect service, so I stayed with them [Optus] as a provider, however, since we moved to Coona it’s been so sporadic!”

Emma said the reason she continued to stay with Optus was because she was on a joint account with her son, who was locked into a contract with the provider.

“At one point I spoke to them about releasing my number to change to Telstra, as Optus doesn’t work at my partner’s farm in Neilrex,” Ms McDonald said. “ They ‘checked the ser v ice map’ and assured me there was full coverage in Neilrex, which there absolutely

was not.”

A futher reason Emma said she was cited for the service issues was that her phone was too old, yet Emma uses an iPhone 12 Pro Max! A nother cust omer reported her child had

to run to their dad’s work by themselves, as she had been taken to hospital with five kids at home and no way to make contact.

Another reported that he was u nable t o be contacted by his parents

when a fire broke out on their property near Cessnock, due to the lack of service in the area.

That’s a wrap: September skill show The group behind Coonabarabran’s best acronym, WAACI - aka Warrumbungle Arts and Crafts Inc. - have been pleased with the success of their September skill show.

Held each Thursday throughout September, the ‘come along and try’ workshops explored a range of arts and craft includ ing mosa ics, sketching, papercraft, felt bi r d s , k n it t i n g, crochet and watercolour.

The event was designed to encourage new members to join the WAACI group, and to help spread the word

about what takes place at the A nglican Hall each Thursday.

Tuition could easily be replicated on a one-toone basis as requested.

O ver the nex t few week, WAACI members will be busy packing Chr istmas char ity g ift boxes and would appreciate ‘all hands on deck ’ help f rom members.

Knitting was one of the skills highlighted during WAACI’s September workshops.

Weekly cattle and sheep market wrap • Victorian lamb slaughter highest on record.

• Cattle prices continue to ease.

• Lamb and sheep markets remain mixed.

Cattle

Yardings lifted by 5,750 to 50,608 head. Yardings rose in every mainland state except South Australia, while the largest decline in yardings was at Leongatha saleyard, where numbers fell from 1,330 head the previous week to 350.

Saleyard cattle prices trended down this week, with relatively consistent price movements between states and indicators.

The feeder steer indicator eased 13¢ over the week to 222¢/kg liveweight (lwt), as plainer cattle were presented in several sales and feedlot buyer demand was relatively weak.

Other indicators were broadly in line with this

trend.

T he b e st p er for m i ng indicator for the week was the restocker yearling heifer, easing 10¢ to 145¢/kg lwt, while the dairy cow indicator eased 32¢/kg to 106¢/kg lwt.

Sheep

Total lamb and sheep yardings lifted by 26,954 to 256,800 head.

Lamb and sheep yardings both lifted, as fortnightly sales that did not run last week were included in the numbers this week.

Lamb and sheep indicators were mixed this week.

T he mutton indicator dipped below 100¢/kg carcase weight (cwt) on Tuesday and Wednesday before a strong sale at Wagga on Thursday lifted the indicator to 106¢/

kg cwt, 2¢ above the previous week.

By contrast, the light lamb indicator eased by 25¢ over the week to 277¢/kg cwt.

O ver the past four weeks prices have diverged s u b s t a nt i a l ly b e t we e n indicators.

T he heav y a nd trade lambs have moved sideways, the heavy lamb indicator has eased 1.8¢ over the month, while the trade lamb has eased 0.1¢.

By comparison, the Merino lamb and mutton indicators have fallen considerably, w it h t he Mer i no l a mb indicator easing by 61¢ over the month and the mutton indicator easing 83¢, which constitutes a 43% decline in the indicator’s value over the

month.

Slaughter

Week ending 22/09/2023.

Weekly slaughter lifted slightly, by 750 to 127,335 head, as strong increases in NSW and South Australia balanced falling slaughter numbers in Queensland.

Sheep slaughter fell by 1,673 to 160,165 head, while lamb slaughter rose by 28,075 to 447,022 head, the highest weekly figure since 2016.

This was largely due to a 28,258 increase in Victorian slaughter to 229,037 head, the highest weekly Victorian lamb slaughter figure in NLRS records. © Meat & Livestock Australia Limited

Remembering those who serve and protect Police Remembrance Day is a day allowing police to pause, reflect and honour those who have lost their lives on duty as an officer of the law.

Police Remembrance Day is significant to the Police Force, as many have sacrificed their life to serve and protect.

Many lives have been c ut shor t , i nc lud i n g Senior Constable John Ward of Coonabarabran Police, who served from 1830 to 1865.

Throughout the mid 18 0 0 s , bu s h r a n g e r s terrorised communities and travellers.

During that period, it was normal for police to deal with high-risk situations a lone a nd isolated.

T o d ay, p ol i c e n ow r e sp ond t o c r i m i n a l activity with multiple resources, surveillance and planning.

M a l Un ic omb i s a retired police officer who has researched into the

life and death of Senior Constable Ward.

He shared why it was important to remember those who had fallen.

“John Ward was the off icer in charge of Coonabarabran back in the day,” Mr Unicomb said.

“His memory had not been honoured, nor was he mentioned i n a ny contemporary writings about Coonabarabran Police and their history.

“It wasn’t until a very elderly relative of John’s wrote a letter to the officer in charge of the Coonabarabran Police

Station requesti ng information about her great-great grandfather, John Ward. No one at the station or in the district had any knowledge of a John Ward or his life. “ I decided that John Ward needed to be memor ialised and remembered – and thus my journey with John began in the early to mid 1980s.”

The story

S en ior C onstable Ward was returning to C o onaba rabra n f rom Mudgee, riding the 200 k i lomet r e s on hor s e back.

He was approached by two sheep drovers who informed the police officer of a bushranger sighting, along a track known as Barneys Reef Road, near Dunedoo.

The sighting was of bushranger Sam Poo. S en ior C onstable Ward instantly went in search of the bushranger in nearby bushland.

He located Sam Poo at h i s c a mp sit e a nd challenged him to surrender.

The bushranger opened fire and a gun battle commenced, leaving Senior Constable Ward with life-threatening injuries.

A local farmer located the constable and assisted him to the h is home t o a r ra nge treatment.

A doctor d id not arrive until the following day, however, Senior Constable Ward succumbed to his injuries and was buried amongst the grounds of the farmer’s homestead.

A man hunt was initiated to find Sam Po o, who was lat er arrested and hanged at Bathurst Jail.

It is noted that the bushranger showed no remorse a nd d id not disclose the loot he had acquired through his criminal activity. It is said it may be buried somewhere near Barneys

Reef Road, waiting to be found.

M r Un ic omb spent over five years delving into a rchive records, uncovering documents th at det a i led S en ior Constable Ward’s murder a nd t h e s u b s e q u e nt arrest, conviction and execution of the offender, Sam Poo. Resting place “But I found that there was no official definitive location of John’s grave a nd that upset me greatly, to think that a fellow police officer had paid the ultimate price in the execution of his duty – and yet we had no idea where he had been laid to rest!” Mr Unicomb said.

Continuing his search, Mr Unicomb was led to a property now called “Biriwa Station”.

“In John’s day, that pr oper t y was n a med “ Bi l la roy ” a nd was ow ne d by M r Ja me s Plun kett, who had nursed John in the short period before his death,” Mr Unicomb explained.

“The then owners had no idea of the history and story involving their property, but gave me permission to have a look around. However, they did know of a very old cemetery on the property that was almost in ruins and overrun by grass and flood debris. “ O ver a per iod of

several visits I was able to clear around many of the graves and dig away some of the d i r t and debris and eventually I discovered the grave of Senior Constable John Ward.”

This discovery led to dialogue with both the NSW Police Department a nd the N S W Pol ic e Association and resulted in memorials t o S en ior C on s t a ble Ward dedicated at the Coonabarabran Police Station and near where he was shot, in Birriwa.

A local street in Coonabarabran was also named after him – John Ward Place.

The lives of those who have served within the Police Force are etched into history, with their st or ies remembered and respected amongst communities. “ It ’s ex tremely important to remember and honour our fallen – be it military or police, as these are the everyday people who run towards and are confronted by dangers and situations that the general public never see or experience,” Mr Unciomb said. “ These people a r e mem b e r s o f ou r community, our towns and villages who have paid the ultimate price so that we can live a safe and normal existence.”

Free pool entry comes with a cost Casual entry to swimming pools across Warrumbungle Shire will be made free this year, but only during hours when a pool attendant is on duty.

by JIMMY WHALAN Maintaining a steady number of pool attendants has been a challenge that plagued the 2022-23 pool season a n d l o o k s to b e o n e that may continue into this season, if pool attendants are not able to be secured.

Warrumbungle Shire C o u n c i l m a y o r, C r Ambrose Doolan said if a pool attendant was not on duty, swimmers would need to purchase a season ticket if they wished to access the pool facilities. “ I f w e d o n’ t h a v e pool attendants, or if people want to go for an early morning swim o r any thing l i ke that, they w i l l sti l l need to buy a season ticket,” Cr Doolan said. “ We’r e n ot h a v i n g free entr y at all times without super vision, b e ca u s e we a re j u s t a bit wo r r ied that if something is free, it’s not valued and there may be antisocial behaviour, so we are only making it free when the pool is supervised.”

Although staf f ing issues will likely affect the hours swimmers can access the six Shire pools for free, Cr Doolan said he still notched this change up as a win – an effort to stimulate more use for the pool.

As this year’s swim season quickly approaches, Cr Doolan was hopeful that Council would be able to at t ract m o re poo l attendants.

“Council will provide you r training and it only takes three days including first aid and pool maintenance training – and after that, a well-paying job!”

With pools across t h e S h i re re - o p e n i n g this month, Cr Doolan said an increase in the number of pool attendants would mean t h e p o o l s a c ro s s t h e Shire would be open for longer hours with free entry.

Pools have now been drained, cleaned, and filled up ahead of the upcoming pool season, with Coonabarabran, Dunedoo and Coolah pool s set to open on

As previously reported in the Coonabarabran T i mes, one i s sue that affected the 2022 swim s e a s o n wa s c h l o r i n e levels.

In an effort to reduce a similar issue this swim season, Council voted to spend $ 55 0,0 0 0 to b r i ng the el ect ron ics and pumps up to date across the Shire.

Cr Doolan said these auto-disinfectant dosing systems would be installed and ready f o r t h i s y e a r ’s s w i m season.

G o i n g fo r wa rd, h e said Council would c o n t i n u e to l o o k fo r other ways to structure pool ope rations, to maximise use of pool faci l ities whi le al so m a k i n g t h e fa c i l i t i e s economical.

“The pools are cu r rently subsidised by over $ 5 0 0,0 0 0 per year, so we’re asking if there are better ways to organise the running of

our pools, and is there a bet te r way to s taf f them?

“Do we get someone else to operate them, or how can we make the best use of these assets that we’ve got in the community?”

Cr Doolan said he was disappointed the NSW Government scrapped Royalties for Re g i o n s , a s t h i s w a s where Council secured $200,000 in funding last year to create designs for future pool upgrades

in Coonabarabran.

“There has been quite a substantial investment i n t h e p o o l ove r t h e last year; on top of the $500,000 Council chips in each year, we also put in $500,000 for pool upgrades including

the installation of new chlorinators, and $20 0,0 0 0 for new designs – totalling over $1.2 million,” he said.

“This is an indication of Council’s commitment to pool s across the Shire.”

“The visit was part of the students extending thei r k nowledge on waste and recycling and what happens after you place items in the bin.”

Cr Doolan said waste services are one o f C o u n c i l ’s l a r g e s t s er v ic es pr ov ided t o the community every day and it is important t h at t he c om mu n it y understands the importance of recycling to minimise the waste ending up in landfill, which in turn will help

the env ironment and prolong the life of waste depots. “ The children were ver y excited t o see t he c a r d b o a r d pr e s s in action and had numerous questions on how it all worked. They were show n how the cardboard was pressed and, at the end of the process, how it came out in a bale,” Cr Doolan said.

“NetWaste had sent posters and gifts for the students to encourage them to be proactive in learning about

waste a nd recycl i ng.

The children asked our environment and waste staff some wonderful questions a nd sta f f enjoyed sharing their k n o wl e d g e w it h t he younger generation.

“The services provided by Council to our communities every day a re r un by loca l community members, s o a l l ow i n g a f i r s t hand insight into the operations of Council i s a w o n d e r f u l w ay to streng then this community connection.”

DUNEDOO TREATMENT PLANT Works are underway to rectify odour issues at the wastewater treatment pla nt i n Dunedoo t o decrease the i mpac t s on the community. “ Unfortunately, the D u ne do o c om mu n it y has been experiencing odour issues that have been produced from the Dunedoo Wastewater T reatment Plant,” s a i d Wa r r u m b u n g l e Shire Council mayor, counci l lor A mbrose Doolan.

“Council staff have been working to resolve

the problems, but with the age of the facility it is not an easy or quick fix.”

In December 2022 , a m aj or me c h a n i c a l process unit that is used to treat sewerage at the Dunedoo Wastewater Treatment Plant ex per ienc ed a major mechanical failure.

This breakdown resulted in odou rs being produced by the Dunedoo Wastewater Treatment Plant, and had a flow-on effect to other functions at the treatment plant. This unit has been removed a nd a n i nt er i m u n it has been installed t o c ont i nue t o t r e at wastewater.

Counci l has been consulting with industry specialists along with the NSW Environment P rotection Author ity ( E PA ) a nd N S W Department of Planning and Environment ( DPE ) t o i mplement recommended actions to best manage the odour from the plant. “ T he mechanical aeration unit is being r et u r ned t o s er v ic e , which is expected

t o la rgely improve operations at the Treatment Plant,” Cr Doolan explained. “ Unfortunately, the treatment plant is aging and Council has been wo rk i n g t o up g r ade it . To m i n i m i s e a ny financial impact this may have on residents, C ou nci l has se cu red f u nd i n g t o do t he s e upgrades.”

These upgrades are bei ng c omplet ed t o improve the quality of wastewater produced by the pla nt as wel l as i mprove overa l l operations at the Dunedoo Wastewater Treatment Plant. These works will be delivered over t he ne x t t h r e e years, with the most critical works to combat the odour issues being delivered first as the highest priority.

Tenders for the f irst of the upg rades a re being ca l led in November 2023. “ Thank you to the residents of Dunedoo for your understanding a co operation w ith C ou nc i l du r i n g t h i s time,” Cr Doolan concluded.

WEATHER WATCH C o onaba rabra n has re corded its wa rmest September in 144 years of records. The mean maximum temperature of 24.7 degrees was four degrees above normal.

Previous warmest Septembers were in 1888, 1895, 1980 and 2013. All these certainly led to dry conditions, warmer than usual during the spring season and then to a summer season much hotter than usual from outback Queensland to Victoria, with rainfalls generally below average.

Dubbo has also recorded its warmest September in 152 years of records ,with the mean-maximum temperature of 25.7 being 4.3 degrees above normal.

The total rainfall at Dubbo was only 2.6mms; the fourth driest behind 1957, 1961 and 2007.

Previous warmest Septembers at Dubbo were in 1888, 1901, 1919 and 2013.

Deniliquin, with a mean-maximum temperature of 23.6 degrees, has recorded its warmest September since 1888.

The last three months of 1888 and the first four months of 1889 were extremely hot in Qld, NSW and most of Victoria away from the coast. Maximum temperatures reached 50 degrees at Wilcannia and at Bourke, and reached 53.8 degrees at Cloncurry on 16 January 1889.

Some areas of Victoria were fortunate to receive above-average rainfalls during the summers of 1888-1889, 1980-81 and 2013-14.

During the past week many places in WA recorded their hottest September day on record. These included Mardie 41.7, Onslow 41.6, Mandora 42.8, Geraldton 39, Kalgoorlie 37.9; and Meekatharra 38.5.

Ceduna broke its record September twice this month with readings of nearly 40 degrees, and also recorded its warmest September since 2013.

Melbourne, with only 10.8mms in September, recorded its driest-ever September in 183 years of records. Previous very dry Septembers in Melbourne were in 1881, 1907, 1938, 1968, 1981, 2008 and 2018.

Quite a few of these did lead to above-average rainfalls in both November and December in some districts, but January and February were excessively hot in our regions, inclucing 50.2 degrees at Wilcannia on 11 January 1939.

Achievements at state level were recently acknowledged, when country women gathered to hear the latest from Australia’s largest women’s organisation.

Barbara Gow displayed her beautiful trophy Regional members of won at the Malaysian the Country Women’s Triennial Conference Association of NSW held in Kuala Lumpur, met in Gulgong on where she won a second Monday, 7 August at prize for her knitted the Castlereagh Country article.

President, Wendy Baldock (Purlewaugh) congratulated members on their winning entries.

“Following on from State Conference, I extend congratulations to those members who received awards in the cultural, international, handicraft and Land cookery sections; we are very proud of their achievements,” Mrs Baldock said.

“Expo Day was a fun and friendly time with many agriculture and environmental posters on display, Latvian puzzles and Land Army presentation.

“Well done to all who participated and presented.”

It was announced that CWA of NSW is forming a partnership with the Gidget Foundation of Australia to support the emotional wellbeing of expectant and new parents. Members will be fund-raising for this special project during Peri-natal Mental Health Week from 6-12 November.

At the afternoon session, guest speakers, state president Joy Beames and state treasurer Sharon Buck, spoke on the protocols of each office and meeting procedures. Sharon gave an insight into the rules of the branch treasurer’s position, along with some financial do’s and don’ts, with a special focus on fund-raising and the

preparation of end-ofyear financial statements for auditing.

Information on the new Land Cookery schedule was presented, as well as the criteria for the handicraft competition.

Castlereagh Country Group members will meet again in Baradine in mid-October for the annual conference.

The 1980s or 1990s.

What’s the most used emojis on your phone? I don’t use emojis.

If you could have anyone around for dinner who would it be? My children.

Moorambilla celebrates marks on country Music and song have overcome distance with inspiring performances from regional youth that showcase the transformative power of the arts and its connection to Country.

by LIZ CUTTS A total of 245 children throughout north-west NSW attended the awardwinning Moorambilla Voices residential camps i n B a r ad i ne du r i n g August and September for the lead up to the gala Riversong 2023: Marks on Country concert.

It pr o v ide s creative and performance opportunities to young si nger s a nd d a nc er s across central and northwest NSW through a ser ies of residency workshops with primary and secondary students held during August in Baradine, culminating in a gala performance in Dubbo in September.

This year’s ensembles had the opportunity to learn the story of Guliyali the Pelican with Walgettbased Gamilaroi visual artist Frank Wright and co-create dance works with four choreographers – Worimi and Dunghutti man, Jye Uren, Birripai woman Tammy Bouman,

Wiradjuri man Neville W i l l i a m s -B oney a nd Jacob Williams.

A r t i s t i c d i r e c t o r, Michelle Leonard OAM, said the students have been sing ing thei r hearts out in Indigenous la ng uage featu r i ng Gamilaraay and Wiradjuri. “ W h a t a n extraordinar y and creative energy exploded out of t he B a r ad i ne Memorial Hall this year at the August residencies for Moorambilla R iversong 2 023 ,” Ms Leonard said.

“Just like our rivers in flood, the capacity of our regional children to sing, dance, play Taiko drums and connect us all to the joy of singing is immense and incredibly powerful. “ I a m s o ut t e rly delighted to be seeing the fruition of so much work from so many people in the region come to life in this year’s program.

The music is absolutely glorious, the dancing and Taiko is so incredibly powerful and strong; its breathtaking in its energy!”

BOWLO BRIEFS Once again there was a good turn up at the Coonabarabran Bowling Club on Sunday, for two games to be played – a game of triples and a game of pairs.

On rink three, Levi Heywood and Paul Hunt competed against Marky Watton and Di Spittles,

Opposition Leader meets with Moree Plains community, growers Federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has toured the Moree Plains, meeting with community members and growers.

Mr Dutton, who was hosted by federal Member for Parkes Mark Coulton, met with civic leaders and business owners while in the shire last week.

During the visit, Mr Dutton also heard about local issues.

While touring a property, the two Members of Parliament discussed issues with irrigation, particularly with the northern basin and the changes that are coming through with the legislation that’s before the parliament now.

“It’s really important that Peter comes and sees where the real economic powerhouse of Australia is generated – and it’s been very, very useful so far this morning to see things, rather than just be briefed on them,” Mr Coulton said.

Mr Dutton described Moree as an incredible town and thanked the local family who hosted them on their property during the tour of the shire.

“They employ locals, they produce for our country, they provide support to many ancillary businesses who just couldn’t operate in towns like Moree without these sorts of farming operations, at the significant scale that they’ve got here and many other surrounding properties,” Mr Dutton told media during his visit.

Official medal Varroa mite reveals need for biosecurity honour for OAM recipient boost: NSW Farmers Gae Swain has been formally recognised with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) during an official presentation ceremony at Government House in Sydney last week.

The respected former councillor and Gunnedah shire mayor was recognised with the prestigious award during the King’s Birthday Honours announced earlier this year.

Mrs Swain received the award ‘for service to local government and to the community of Gunnedah’.

Medals were presented by Governor Margaret Beazley in the presence of her husband, Dennis Wilson.

Each recipient’s citation was read out as they were presented to the Governor who then pinned the medal.

Mrs Swain said the ceremony was held on a hot, cloudless day surrounded by “gorgeous” Moreton Bay figs - some which were planted 147 years ago when Government House was built.

Many official dignitaries as well as award recipients and their families were present at the medal presentations.

She said medals were awarded in different categories including seven members in the General Division of Order of Australia, three for the Ambulance Service Medal and 22 in the Medal in General Division of the Order of Australia.

Medal recipients and guests were later treated to a light afternoon tea in the breathtaking grounds surrounding the historic sandstone house.

Mrs Swain was an elected member of Gunnedah Shire Council from 1991-2008 and 2012-2021, serving as mayor, from 1999 to 2008 and deputy mayor from 2012 to 2018.

Her community work spans many areas.

Mrs Swain is closely involved with the Anglican Church, Diocese of Armidale, holding many executive Synod appointments.

Among her community engagements and leadership roles, Mrs Swain was founder of the Gunnedah Youth Scholarship Fund, a founding board member of Mackellar Care, an office holder and board member of Gunnedah Nursing Home and has been awarded the Women in Local Government Award, Woman of the Year, Tamworth Electorate, and is active in Gunnedah Rotary where she was recognised with a Paul Harris Fellowship in 2004.

On announcement of her OAM, Mrs Swain said the medal belonged to the community.

“I don’t see this as an award to one person, I see it as an award to the team - the team being Gunnedah,” she said.

NSW Farmers says the federal government must force importers to pay for the biosecurity threats they create.

The calls came after authorities admitted defeat on eradicating Varroa mite after more than a year of fighting the invasive pest.

Ian McColl, NSW Farmers Biosecurity Committee chair, said the Varroa mite outbreak clearly showed the risk of exotic animal and plant pests and diseases was very real.

“We have had a practical demonstration of how difficult biosecurity control efforts can be with Varroa mite – despite best efforts, Australia now has to live with another costly biosecurity failure,” Mr McColl said.

“The really worrying thing is that we have a significant risk of Red Imported Fire Ants entering NSW from Queensland, and Australia faces the threat of Lumpy Skin Disease and Foot and Mouth Disease entering from our close neighbour, Indonesia.

“This underscores how critical detection and prevention is, we need all governments appropriately resourcing biosecurity efforts to maintain strong protections at the border.”

Australia’s changed tactics on Varroa mite were the result of discussions between industry bodies and governments under an emergency plant pest response, and while NSW Farmers did not have a role in that process, Mr McColl said he expected any decisions carefully considered current and potential impacts to agricultural production.

“Our role is to provide information to government and peak industry bodies to inform their decision making, and to represent issues of our members regarding the response,” Mr McColl said.

“Our members have been quite clear that increased biosecurity funding is essential, but it should take into account who creates the risk and who already pays.

“Taxing the farmers who are at ultimate risk of biosecurity breaches is not the way to move to improved biosecurity outcomes, especially when that tax might simply fund administrative functions of the federal department, and not increase biosecurity prevention, preparedness, or response capabilities.

“This is why NSW Farmers opposes the proposed Biosecurity Protection Levy in its current form.”

Container service closes gap in supply chain for North West Port of Newcastle has launched its first regular container service from its newly expanded multipurpose terminal, providing consumer goods, industrial and agribusiness customers throughout the North West and surrounding regions with a cost-effective and efficient option for importing and exporting product.

The service, delivered by Neptune Pacific Direct Lines (NPDL), will see the port become a regular call for container vessels, with import and export opportunities between Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Port of Newcastle has maintained a key focus on Narrabri and Moree and has invested in the region, including its major sponsorship of Nosh Narrabri and Moree on a Plate Festival Port of Newcastle executive manager business development, Matthew Swan said the service formally kicked-off with the arrival of NPDL container vessel Capitiane Dampier on September 16, which included the exchange of both import and export containers.

“We see this new service as an important step in growing container trade at the Port of Newcastle and in completing the missing link in the supply chain for growers, farmers and producers in north western NSW, looking to access South

“This will not only mean significant savings in landside costs for customers, but an all-round more efficient and convenient service, which is further enhanced by the port‘s

two on berth Liebherr LHM 550 mobile harbour cranes and direct access to national heavy road and rail networks.”

The port’s new NPDL container service will initially run on a monthly basis, with a view to increase to a fortnightly service based on demand.

Grains research update at Bellata The Grains Research and Development Corporation hosted an update session at the Bellata War Memorial Hall, and it was a chance for locals to connect and discuss the latest farm-ready information to improve profit with researchers, agronomists, and growers.

Speakers and topics on the agenda included agronomy consultant and director of CropFacts Harm van Rees with a presentation on glyphosate.

Glyphosate is regarded as the most effective broad-spectrum weed control and is the active ingredient in popular products such as Roundup.

Jono Baird from the Department of Primary Industries spoke about the relative performance of different farming systems of the future for Northern NSW. Richard Daniel of the Northern Grower Alliance discussed fallow efficiency and the impact of stubble height, crop type and plant population.

Herbicides for winter crop systems was a topic covered by Mark Congreve of Independent Consultants Australia Network and he was joined by Outlook Ag agronomist Drew Penberthy to discuss optimising the performance of winter crop residual herbicides.

Steven Simpfendorfer of NSW DPI focused on cereal disease, and Loretta Serafi, also from NSW DPI, gave a presentation on the

topic of sorghum row configuration and the impact on soil water at harvest and yield.

Matt Gardner from AMPS Research and Gurley grower Mike Smith hosted a discussion on VR technology to match varietal flowering windows to frost risk across the landscape.

“The updates have been running for in excess of 27 years; they are the GRDC’s premier outreach function,” said John Cameron, consultant director of Independent Consultants Australia Network and the Northern Region Grains Research Update coordinator.

“They’re really set up to showcase what’s new, what’s coming out of the research pipeline and what’s ready to be taken up when it comes to on-farm management decisions.”

Mr Cameron said one of the session’s highlights was the discussion hosted by Harm van Rees.

“We had an excellent presentation this morning from probably one of the most senior consultants in the whole country - Harm van Rees.

“He was one of the pivotal members from the Virtue Cropping Group in Victoria and runs a business called CropFacts near Bendigo.

“And he has recently won on a GRDC award.

“He’s travelled the world looking at issues around glyphosate and

sustainability in our farming systems and social licence issues.

“We need glyphosate to farm in this country - it’s a very arid climate, and it is one of the key-enabling tools that helps us improve water use efficiency.”

Mr Cameron said the GRDC update sessions were also a fantastic opportunity for people in the agricultural industry to connect faceto-face, ask questions and share knowledge.

“We have the researchers in the room, we have the key agronomist and we’ve got the key growers in the room, they’re all talking and it’s one big love-in.

“The networking that happens …

It’s fabulous. Growers and agronomists in a room - that’s always a good, a worthwhile meeting and a good return on investment.”
