Golden celebrations for CHS Coonabarabran High School celebrated its 50th anniversary last weekend, with a fun-filled lineup of festivities. by JIMMY WHALAN The 50 years celebrations kicked off on Friday night with the Celebrate CHS Showcase in the school hall. The Showcase was an exciting evening of musical and dramatic performances including a performance of Skyfall from the CHS Jazz Band and a per formance of Hamlette by Allison Williams, a quirky reimagination of Shakespeare’s famous play in which the title character ‘Hamlet’ is a woman, ‘Hamlette.’ After the show, the audience was treated to a delicious supper prepared by the CHS commerce class. The festivities continued on Saturday with a fete in the CHS courtyard. From 10am to 2pm, the high school courtyard and canteen area were lined with stalls including plants, cakes, CHS merchandise, hand-made items, brica-brac bargains, and a delicious barbecue run by Duncan Graham and Angus Atkinson. There was also a slideshow in the school hall featuring some memorable moments in Coona High’s history, including then Prince Charles’ visit to officially open the school in 1974. C e l e b r a t i o n s continued into Saturday
evening with the CHS 50th Birthday Trivia Night. The trivia night saw some familiar faces catching up and testing their knowledge of all things CHS and beyond. Competitors enjoyed a charcuterie board and some beverages, with the winners on the night being an unbeatable group of past and present Coonabarabran High School staff led by Joe Ramage and Linda Davis. Coonabarabran High School principal, Mary Doolan said the highlight of the night was its conclusion, when the winning team led the crowd in a rousing rendition of the school song, Forever Dare. Ms Doolan said that the 50 years celebrations were a fabulous weekend with many highlights. “Strong community support underpinned the weekend with very generous donations to support our fete and raffle prizes and great attendance at the three celebratory events; the showcase, fete and trivia night,” Ms Doolan said. Ms Doolan said it was also wonderful to meet some past students of CHS including Kerry McClure and Sue Blackburn from the Year 8 class of 1973, who returned to Coona for the weekend and a walk down memory lane.
