NORTH WEST
Equestrian EXPO
COONABARABRAN: FRIDAY, 31ST MAY – TUESDAY, 4TH JUNE 2024
A hearty welcome to Coona! The North West Equestrian Expo committee and head stewards are thrilled to welcome 450 riders representing 100 schools to the 2024 event, and are gearing up for five days of competition across 13 disciplines at the Coonabarabran Showground and Racecourse. Exciting changes The Expo committee has worked with other user groups throughout the year to upgrade the cross- country track with crusher dust and s havings . The sand dressage arena has been repacked and levelled, with proposed fencing scheduled following this year’s event. A new wash bay has been built on the highway side of the showground for those stabled there during Expo. Again this year, the comittee has purchased sawdust for riders to use in their stables – the aim is to reduce the costs incurred by riders in purchasing shavings and the large amount of plastic waste generated by the bags. The Coonabarabran Public School P&C is also trialing a recycling depot for plastic bottles and cans as a fund-raiser for the school and a way to reduce waste during the event. Expo’s major sponsors this year are Furney’s Feeds, Dubbo, and Godolphin Lifetime Care. Fu rn ey ’s h a s a g a i n donated a bag of feed for each competitor and Godolphin, in addition to sponsoring our age champions, is also sponsoring the Team 6 Bar. I would like to thank all our sponsors – we are aware of the increasing
pressure on budgets and we again thank you for your support. The extra lighting that was sponsored by NSW Polocrosse in 2023 proved so successful that this year we have hired eight LED lights to complement our evening program. The Showground Trust has also assisted with upgrades to the permanent lighting at the Showground. C o m p etito rs at th e racecourse will notice a permanent laneway for riders to safely access the showground, and vice versa. There are new permanent day yards available for competitors. Expo continues to work with the Coonabarabran Jockey Club to improve facilities at this increasingly popular area. There have been some timetable changes this year, with the Team of Fours event being held at the showground so as many riders as possible f ro m Te a m P e n n i n g , E x p o Gy m k h a n a a n d Hacking can all participate without having to go to the racecourse. The very popular Warrumbungles Way will utilise more of the crossc o u nt r y c o u r s e t h a n previous years including the large water jump. Life members Expo welcomed three new life members at its
annual general meeting in February – Ross Young, Lucy Evans and Jacqui Clifton. M a ny competitors may not know Ross, but have ridden in many of the dressage arenas he assembles each year. This year he will be working on five arenas in the main showground arena and eight at the racecourse. P refe r r i n g to wo r k quietly on his own in the weeks leading up to Expo nothing is too much trouble and Ross gets the job done without any
fuss. I believe Ross has been doing this job for over 20 years and is a very worthy recipient of life membership. Lucy has been th e h e a d s tewa rd of Monday Dressage for over a decade. She is b oth p a s s i o n ate a n d progressive within her discipline, introducing medium classes and the Friday Freestyle classes. Lucy is also a valued m em b er of the E xpo c o m m it te e , a s s i s ta nt secretary and controller of our social media
platform. The energy she brings to her job inspires others and her “can do” attitude gets things done. J acq u i i s th e h ea d steward for presentations, which includes the evening presentations and the final parade. With over 150 rugs and 700 ribbons and rosettes to be married up with winners and placegetters, you can understand the complexity of the task. Jacqui is also a valued member of the office team during the event, fielding queries from
competitors and liaising with sponsors. Grateful support I would like to thank our community for the support given to Expo from Rotary, both the Primary and High School, our many sponsors, Pony C l u b , Wa r r u m b u n g l e Eventing, Showground Trust, Warrumbungle Shire Council, our head stewards and committee and the m a ny vo l u nte e rs n ot necessarily represented by the aforementioned
organisations, who generously give of their time and expertise. Finally, I would like to recognise the schools, teachers, team managers, parents and riders for their continued support of the event. We look forward to five days of competition representing your school in a wide range of equestrian events. Kevin Sharp President North West Equestrian Expo Committee
North West Equestrian Expo committee members Brenda Grant, Rebecca Moxham, Abbey Blackburn, Kevin Sharp, Richard Blackman, Ren Letts and Lisa Moody are excited for another year of competition and memory making.
