It’s the end of an era...

Chimp’s hanging up the clippers Local barber, John “Chimp” Franklin has had his reign cut short as he retires due to health reasons.

Chimp spoke to the Coonabarabran Times earlier this week, taking a look back over his impressive 67-year career behind the shears.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Coonabarabran may have a few more people walking around with long, unkempt hairdos as local legend and barber, “Chimp” hangs up the clippers for the final time.

H a v i n g s at at h i s b a r b e r s h o p fo r 67 yea r s, h i s p resence i n Coonabarabran’s main street made him somewhat of a local institution.

Over the years, he provided locals and travellers with cheap, st ylish haircuts, many laughs, many a cigar and a sense of timelessness.

If only the worn-out tiles and vintage walls of the barber shop could talk.

His wife, Sandra, has supported him throughout the many years.

“There are stories in that shop,” Sandra said.

“Older men would come in, just for a chat and if he heard anything, it would never leave the shop.”

It seemed Chimp’s loyalty to the locals meant that what happened in the shop, stayed in the shop.

The couple remembered the days when kids would walk past, always asking for a hair cut.

Chimp would perch the kids on a stool, wet their hair, comb it back and send them on their way.

He said his popularity came from providing cheap haircuts, however, Sandra noted it was more than that.

She said Chimp would not raise the cost of his haircuts as he did it for the passion, not the money. “ I d o n’ t w a n t t o d i e r o b b i n g anybody,” he said.

His uncle, however, did not believe he would make a good barber.

“I showed him,” Chimp

said.

He explained how he finished his apprenticeship at 18 and took over his uncle’s shop one Saturday while he was away.

His first customer was Jack Renshaw, who was

a Member of Parliament at the time.

Ch i mp eventua l l y went on to open his own shop, covering all types of h a i r cut s ove r th e decades.

Although he had seen the fashion and hairstyles

change, he claims they were all his favourites.

His business had little struggles over the years.

S a n d ra m e nt i o n e d business slowed down when long hair came into fashion, otherwise his customers were loyal to

Chimp and he was loyal to his customers.

T h e ye a r s s p e nt at the shop allowed him to meet five generations of families, becoming a part of the lives of those who walked through the doors.

What’s in a name?

His nickname also became a part of him – bestowed after playing football in fifth grade.

“A bloke said, ‘you look like a chimp running down the football field’.

“I turned around and sa id, ‘you look l i ke a strawberry’.

“The names stuck with both of us.”

The nickname eventually created a life of its own, as toy monkeys took over the shop.

The stuffed animals were given to him by customers, but it was his

wife who first kicked off the ‘monkey business’.

“It was Valentine’s Day and I took one into the shop for him and people saw it and kept buying him more,” she said.

Community C h i m p’s l e g a c y i n Coonaba rab ran is so strong that some people in the community wish to turn his shop into a museum highlighting the respect held for Chimp’s ef fo r ts among st the community.

Chimp also has a st rong connection to the town, having never wanted to, or thought about leaving.

He moved to Coonaba rab ran from Sy d n e y ’s i n n e r w e s t and decided the small countr y town was his home for life.

After 67 years of old-

fashioned ba r be r i ng, Chimp did not want to retire.

It wa s the docto r’s orders.

“His body is worn out, having his arms lifted all the time,” Sandra said.

Both Chimp and Sandra are grateful for the genuine care and consideration received from community, around his retirement.

“Without the customers I would not have been there.

“They have all been very good to me,” Chimp said.

Chimp leaves behind a legacy of good oldfashioned service and friendship – a character now embedded in Coonaba rab ran’s history.

Despite increasing costs of living, Chimp always kept his prices affordable in the barber shop.

A familiar scene - in between clients Chimp would often have his head buried in a newspaper.

Councillor Ambrose Doolan, in last weeks T imes, has urged all town residents to see that their house blocks are free from f ire hazardous materials – particularly as we are entering the fire-danger period.

This is sound advice,

however, I fe el t h at C ounci l shou ld set an example by seeing that all Council land is prepared.

However, as I walk around Coonabarabran it wou ld seem that Council is not going to carry out the work it is asking the residents to do.

Councillors elect new deputy mayor Warrumbungle Shire Council’s mayoral elections have concluded with councillor Ambrose Doolan, re-elected as mayor and councillor Kathryn Rindfleish, elected as deputy mayor.

In accordance with the Local Government Act 1993 (NSW) the mayoral elections were conducted at the ordinary Council meeting, held at the C oola h C ou nci l Chambers on Thursday, 21 September.

The position of mayor was not contested, with C r D o ola n bei ng re elected.

Cr Doolan and h is wife, Lisa, have been part of the Coonabarabran region for some time, hav i ng bought the family farming business in the mid-1980s and e s t abl i sh i n g a 14 0 0 commercial A ng us breeder operation.

Born and raised in t h e Wa r r u m b u n g l e region, Cr Doolan’s foray i n pr i ma r y i ndustr y has also expanded to importing and retailing direct drill air seeders from Canada since 2004.

He has held a number of positions i n the community, including equestrian and rugby clubs, and as part of the board for Cooinda and the St Lawrence Catholic Parish Church Finance committee.

I n h is spa re time, C r D o ol a n e nj oy s a round of golf, all things equestrian and rugby.

Cr Doolan was first ele c t e d a s m ayor i n September 2020.

Deputy mayor T he 2 0 2 3 mayora l elections were opened for the position of deputy mayor, with a nomination received for Cr Kathryn Rindfleish to obtain the position, which was also not contested.

Cr Rindfleish and her family have been part of the Coolah community for many years. With qualifications in early childhood and business management, she is a proud small business ow ner of mu ltiple businesses in Coolah.

On Monday, 18 September 2023, the family and friends of Coonabarabran’s own footy superstar, Kyle Turner, gathered to celebrate his life, achievements, and legacy – saying farewell to a local hero.

All attending on the day and watching the ser vice via livestream extended their deepest respect, love, suppor t

and condolences both in sadness and in celebration of Kyle’s life.

Who Ky l e wa s a s a person, the impact he

had on their lives, and the legacy he leaves behind will long remain both in the hearts and minds of all who had the

pleasure of knowing him.

Kyle was a kind, loving, generous and giving son, brother, father, partner, fr iend, cousin, uncle,

t e a m m a t e, l e a d e r, mentor, teacher, and colleague.

Upon being signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs

at the age of 17, Kyle completed his H SC alongside his best friends, before leaving for Sydney to pursue his dream of playing in the National Rugby League (NRL).

“In 2014, Kyle made his debut with the Rabbitohs and won the premiership w ith h i s team mates, becoming a part of histor y following a 43 -year drought. Kyle played 91 games during his NRL career.

“Kyle was an adoring, l ov i n g a n d d evote d daddy to Cheyse and t w ins, Denver and Korbin.

“Kyle attained and completed his Bachelor of P r i m a r y Te a c h i n g d e g re e a n d re l i s h ed i n his role as student learning support officer at Coonabarabran High School and teacher at Coonabarabran Public School, in which he excelled both personally and professionally.

“Kyle’s heart and soul

were his most precious attributes, his courage, determination to achieve his dreams, his strength of spirit, and his ability to rise above adversity, and his love for his family and his sons.

“Each and eve r y pe r son w ho touched Kyle’s life and whose life was touched by Kyle’s w i l l l i ve o n ete r n a l l y through the test of time.

Weekly cattle and sheep market wrap • El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole were declared by the Bureau of Meteorology.

• The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator eased 27¢ to 397¢/kg cwt.

• The October wave of the sheep producer intentions survey will begin on 2 October.

Weather On Tuesday, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) declared that El Niño and a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) are underway. This suggests that spring and summer this year are likely to be hotter and drier than average, which aligns with previous forecasts from the BOM. Cattle The trend in indicator prices was unchanged from the previous week, generally easing with the gradient determined by weight and animal condition.

Cattle yardings rose 1,925 head this week to 46,458 head. The increase was seen in every state except Western Australia, where yardings slipped

by 94 to 1,512 head, and Victoria, where yardings fell by 1,157 head due to sales not running.

The Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) eased by 27¢ to 397¢/kg carcase weight (cwt). The restocker component of the indicator was weaker than the EYCI overall, 21¢ below the EYCI at 376¢/kg cwt. In general, restocker demand slipped over the week, with the restocker yearling heifer indicator falling 21¢ over the week to 156¢/kg liveweight (lwt).

Sheep Lamb yardings lifted by 2,294 to 174,317 head, while sheep numbers fell by 12,028 to 55,529 head, for a total yarding of 229,846 head, 9,734 lower than the previous week.

mixed this week, as some indicators lifted while others maintained the previous trend. The restocker lamb indicator lifted 25¢ over the week to 280¢/kg cwt. Restocker purchases of new season lambs at CTLX Calcoar saw the indicator at that saleyard climb 93¢ to 295¢/ kg cwt, while a quality run at Wagga saw an increase of 36¢ to 395¢/kg cwt.

New season lambs now commonly make up a significant portion of lamb yardings. In Wagga, 17,600 new season lambs made up 30% of the yarding.

Sheep producer intentions survey On 2 October, the October wave of the Sheep Producer Intentions Survey (SPIS) will go out to sheep producers

across the country. The survey is an essential source of information about producer intentions and circumstances for industry and is increasingly important for understanding dynamics in the market.

The previous survey can be found here, and more information about the October wave will be included upcoming editions of The Weekly.

Slaughter Week ending 15/09 Cattle slaughter steadily increased, rising by 963 to 126,585 head, the second largest week so far this year. Weekly slaughter numbers are now close to, or slightly above levels seen in mid-2020 and on an upward trend as cattle supply rises.

Combined sheep and lamb slaughter fell by 11,131 from last week to 607,187 head. Sheep slaughter rose by 5,680 to 160,165 head, while lamb slaughter fell by 16,791 to 447,022 head. Slaughter is now consistently above the 2019 weekly slaughter average and close to the 2017–18 average.

Market updates The Bairnsdale cattle market did not run on Thursday.

To align with current market conditions, the National Livestock Reporting Service began reporting sheep and lamb sales sold from $1/head in all market reports on Monday 17 September.

A. The decision of who the Voice will be made up of or how they will be chosen will ultimately be the decision of Parliament.

As it stands, the Albanese government’s plan for the selection of members of the Voice is that they will be chosen by First Nations in their local area and that they will serve for a fixed period.

There will be representatives from all states and territories, though it is unclear how many representatives there will be.

NB: the proposed change to the Australian Constitution does not specify who the Voice will be comprised of or how they will be chosen.

Description of proposal Central-West Orana REZ Transmission project, which includes: • • • • •

development of two new double circuit 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission lines between the existing network at Wollar and the proposed Energy Hubs at Merotherie and Elong Elong (primary infrastructure); development of a new double circuit 330 kV transmission line connecting the new 500 kV transmission line and renewable energy generation and storage projects within the REZ (secondary infrastructure); construction of a new switching station at Wollar (adjacent to Transgrid’s existing substation); construction of two Energy Hubs at Merotherie and Elong Elong; and ancillary infrastructure such as site offices, workforce accommodation camps, internal roads and grid connection to the transmission network.

About the exhibition An exhibition process allows any individual or organisation to have their say about a proposed development.

The Department of Planning and Environment (Department) has received a Critical State significant infrastructure application for the abovementioned proposal. The application, environmental impact statement, and accompanying documents are on exhibition from Thursday 28 September 2023 until Wednesday 25 October 2023. You can view these documents online at planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects.

A. The Voice to Parliament referendum comes after a request to Parliament in a document called the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’.

In May 2017, this document, endorsed by over 250 Indigenous leaders, was presented to Parliament and made requests for the future of Indigenous Australians.

The first was to implement a Voice to Parliament in the Australian Constitution.

Following this, the next step would be to establish a Makarrata Commission including a treaty and truth-telling process.

This origin of the referendum has been one of the ‘Yes’ campaign’s major arguments – that the idea came directly from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

At the time of publishing this advertisement, the Minister for Planning and Public Spaces has not directed that a public hearing should be held.

Controlled Action under Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) Development in NSW can be subject to Commonwealth legislation, depending on the circumstances.

The Commonwealth Minister for the Environment and Water has decided that the proposed development – known as Central-West Orana Renewable Energy Zone Transmission Project (2022/09353) for Commonwealth purposes – is a “controlled action” under the EPBC Act. The EPBC Act Part 3, Division 1 controlled provisions are: • Sections 18 and 18A (Listed threatened species and communities); and • Sections 20 and 20A (Listed migratory species).

The proposed development 2022/09353 will be assessed under Part 5 of the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979. The assessment will be in accordance with the Bilateral Agreement between NSW and the Commonwealth, made under the EPBC Act. The assessment will be done in the manner specified in Schedule 1 of the Bilateral Agreement. This means the project will be assessed against the requirements of both acts.

The first 40-degree temperatures for this season a r r ived last Friday, 22 September.

M a ndor a r e c or de d 4 0.7 deg rees, Jabi r u recorded four degrees, while Borrolooa recorded 40.7 degrees – which was a new record high for September, surpassing the previous record of 40.6 in September last year.

Marble Bar recorded 41.6 t wo d ays l at er, which was very close to the highest September record of 42.6 in 1942.

September temperatures have had a very strong tendency to set up a continuation of the very dry and notably warmerthan-normal conditions for the rest of the year and into the next year.

One of the highest September temperatures at Marble Bar took place in 1938.

Melbourne will now certainly have its driest July to September in 183 years of records.

The total rainfall since the beginning of July up to 24 September has reached 53.8mms and

is still 10mms below the record driest July to September of 66.4 in 1928.

A strong high-pressure system looks set to park itself across our region up to early October.

Most places in our region have been very d r y since last Apr i l.

Up to 24 September, C oonaba rabra n has recorded 10 4mms since the beginning of April, the sixth driest behind 83mms in 1982, 67mms i n 19 9 4 , a nd 68, 78 and 80mms in three successive April to September periods from 2017 to 2019.

Other nearby towns have been worse off, with Moree recording 62mms, Mu n g i nd i r e c or d i n g only 4 6.6mms and Collarenenbri 40mms, which all had their fourth driest April to September periods in the last 145 years; the driest were in 1888, 1994 and 2019 .

The Coonabarabran Times is running ‘Gamilaraay Word of the Week’, in celebration of our local Indigenous language.

We really enjoyed two visits from friends from Gulargambone Preschool, with friends enjoying a fun play in our playground on the first visit – and a

wonderful day together r e c ent ly when we a l l went on our final Bush Preschool session together.

We are so very fortunate t o be able t o ac cess Tooraweenah Creek and su r r ou nd s e a si ly a nd d i s c over ch a nge s a nd th i ngs i n the natu ra l environment.

We like to test our skills when balancing on the logs – even the wobbly ones, as well as climbing up the steep ‘mountains’, then running down the ‘circuit’ track that the children have established with speed and confidence.

IN FOCUS: THE NEATE FAMILY The name ‘Neate’ figures much in the history of Coonabarabran.

Recent times C ol i n Neate was t h e g r e at g r a n d s o n of Joh n I saac Neat e and a well-known loca l busi nessma n, ow n i ng a nd r u n n i ng the Coonaba rabran Bakery. He was born in Coonabarabran in 1923, the third son of Jack and Elsie Neate, and attended St Joseph’s S chool. He d ied in 19 9 7 aged 74 yea r s.

He wa s a c ou nc i l lor on the Coonabarabran Shire Council for many yea rs and was a staunch member of many community orga n isations such a s R S L , R o t a r y, S t Vincent de Paul, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Coonabarabran Jockey Club and Legacy.

Ruby Neate nee Boucher), sister-in-law t o C ol i n, was a lady promi nent i n lo ca l politics, writing many letters to politicians on local matters.

George Neate was a prominent businessman in Bundaberg for many years, who finally came to Coonaba rabran to look after his mother, Ruby. He also figured in local politics.

John Isaac Neate was Coonabarabran’s first builder and he made a ma rk i n bu i ld i ngs constr uct ed i nt o the fabr ic and g rowth of Coonabarabran.

He em ig rat ed f r om L ondon i n 18 5 4 a nd gained employment on the building of Saint M i c h ael ’s C hu r c h , D a rl i n g hu r s t b efor e travelling and working in Mudgee for 10 years, then to Coonabarabran in 1868.

The first school “ R everend William Wilson was the Church of England minister who visited from Cassilis.

He thought it would be a good idea to combine one bu i ld i ng for use as a school during the week and as a church on Sundays – a Church of England, naturally.

Land was set aside and

by August, 1868, plans for the school had been drawn up.

“Some of the people of other denominations app e a r t o h ave h ad different ideas. Ignoring Wilson’s endeavours they applied in March, 1869, for the establishment of a vested school. This was one where the buildings were supplied by the Council of Education and which could only be used as a school. Those who wrote were Jethro

T hey ex pla i ned that there were 35 children elig ible and that the nearest school was 50 miles away. “ The Council of Education favoured their new scheme and more plans were drawn up. “ R e v e r e nd W i l s o n refused to have a ny th i ng more t o do with the education of Coonabarabran’s youth.

“Joh n I sa ac Ne at e contract ed t o ere ct the new school and a residence for the teacher for £400. The town was fortunate to have such an experienced builder here. Now that the final plans for the school had been made, there was not the long delay so often encountered, in get t i ng the bu i ld i ng underway. “ The work was finished and the school opened on October 31, 1870. It consisted of one large teaching room 22’6” x 16’. The teacher’s residence of four small rooms was attached . T hey were both of weatherboard w ith sh i ngled r o ofs.

Thirty-eight children of all ages enrolled”. (page 84).

The first of the Churches “ The people of Coonabarabran wanted something more permanent (than ad hoc schools and churches).

The Church of England was the first to achieve it. They had the first resident m i n ist er i n the late 60s, Reverend H e n r y D i c k e r, w h o was commonly known as “Parson” Dicker. By July 1872, they had a site appropr iated for a chu r ch , a blo ck of land on the east side of R ober tson Street , near the river, which was given in trust to Jethro White, Frederick William Edwards, and Alfred Croxson.

“Two years later John Neate had built their church for them.

“Reverend Wilson, so keen to have the use of the school for a church, at last had his place of worship for his flock. It was largely due to his efforts that the money had been ra ised . He sought donations from the entire population

between Coonabarabran and Cassilis. “ T he new chu r ch measured 40’ in length and 18’ in width.

“The Roman Catholics were next to have land ded icat ed for thei r church, in 1873. Two years later they had the building completed. Rev Father Thomas English built it”.

The second Court House “A P r og r e s s Committee (to build a new cour thouse) was formed in 1876. Their first move was to press for a new Court House to be built. Richard J. Parker, manager of the Australian Joint Stock Bank, was the chairman and Fred Fowler, the Telegraph Master, the secretary. They met once a month and had special meetings as often as was necessary, to discuss new developments.

Dangar kept them up to date on his progress with Parliament concerning the matter.

Finally, he succeeded in having funds allocated.

The business must have taken as much trouble and engendered as much red tape as that which resu lt ed i n the f i rst Court House “ Tenders were c a l led i n Febr ua r y 1876 a nd aga i n i n March 1877. Michael Mealy, a stonesmason from Mudgee, f inally contract ed t o do the work. When he came to Coonabarabran to work on the Court House, he was 4 2 . Ma ny loca ls were employed by him on the construction of the new building.

“John Neate was given the job of foreman, whilst William Bacon brought t he t i mb er t o t ow n .

Wilhelm Opferkuch was the (other) stonemason.

Things had gone well for Wilhelm after his a r r iva l i n Aust ra l i a from Germany with his wife, Christina, in 1854.

He had f irst come to the district to cut the stone for the foundation of David lnnes Watts’ homestead at Ulinda.

“The family finished up with Logan Downs a nd O x ley Spr i ngs.

Wilhelm was assisted in cutting the stone for the Court House by John Enright. The sandstone was quarried locally.

There are conf licting reports as to whether it came from the hill at the top of Cassilis Street, or f rom the qua r r y behind Gordon Street, the former cer ta i n ly

d o e s h ave a q u a r r y of the size that would have been necessary to supply so much stone.

The new Court House was completed in 1878, at a cost £3792, although some say it had cost the Government less than this. A rumour persists that Michael Mealy was never paid for his work!

“In a village of wooden cottages there now stood a most wondrous edifice of stone, that would have done justice to a town many times its size. It was a great credit to its innovators and its builders”.

A new hospital, the first of two public buildings “It was in the middle of the 1880’s that the residents of the town had decided that Coonabarabran needed a hospital. There had b e e n s e ve r a l s m a l l , privately-run hospitals up until now. The first wa s r u n by M at r o n Sm it h f r om a hou s e i n D a l g a r no S t r e et , opposit e the scho ol principal’s residence.

The Gunyah Hospital was on the south-east cor ner of Joh n a nd Cassilis Streets. lt was very popular and existed until well after the turn of the century. Land for the town’s new hospital was dedicated as early as March 1886, but it was not until 1892 that work on its construction began.

“John Neate was once again chosen to erect a building important to the progress of the town.

While in the process of completing this work, he died suddenly at the age of 62. “ The work was c omplet ed , a nd the hospita l opened i n 1893. The foundation stone was laid by Florrie Fetherst onehaugh , wife of Cuthbert, who managed Goorianawa Station”.

Therefore, John Isaac Neate was involved as a builder on the most prominent structures in the town.

He had 10 children, three in Coonabarabran, of whom six survived i nt o adu lt ho o d . O ne of his sons, G eorge Francis Neate, carried on his father’s trade as a builder.

Inquiry into COVID-19 Recently, the Labor Government began its Commonwealth Government COVID-19 Response Inquiry (the Inquiry), with the purpose of identifying lessons learned to improve Australia’s preparedness for future pandemics.

I welcome this Inquiry as I believe it’s a good thing to assess what did and didn’t work during the COVID-19 Pandemic. When the Pandemic began I was Regional Health Minister and I saw many amazing responses, such as the work the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service did in providing

vaccinations across Western NSW. I was, however, disappointed that the states were not included in this Inquiry, as many of the issues affecting the Parkes electorate involved border closures, both on the South Australian and Queensland borders.

I’m hopeful that lessons will be learned from this Inquiry; however, I would have liked to see a more full assessment of the situation, as I don’t believe the full picture can be gathered without including the input of state governments.

is an opportunity to show support and appreciation for our local pharmacists.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic pharmacists were often instrumental in strengthening our healthcare systems, keeping their doors open during lockdowns and vaccinating more than ten million Australians in 18 months.

Australia’s pharmacists are heroes transforming local healthcare. They are driving change and want to do more to strengthen our state and territory health systems by working to their full scope of practice.

Corporal Madalyn Baglee, formerly of Coonabarabran, has donned the green and gold, selected as part of the Australian Defence Force rugby league team that took on Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby last weekend. The daughter of Clinton and Sarah Baglee, Madalyn was part of the cohort that included a men’s ADF team and the Prime Minister’s XIII. While the women may have gone down 10-0, the honour of representing Australia is something Madalyn said she will always be proud of.

Grenfell Races 23 September Contested on a very well prepared turf track on Saturday, the 2000 metres Grenfell Cup featured a typically patient and polished winning ride by top jockey, Mathew Cahill.

Not long back from near career-ending injuries suffered in a race fall, Cowra-based Cahill rode nine-year-old gelding Would Be King in the Cup for Wagga Wagga trainer, Doug Gorrel.

Iron Ruler attacked Jin Chi Phantom for the lead from the outset, with the tearaways establishing a 10-lengths lead over Lunar Chara, with another lengthy margin to the rest of the field.

Undaunted by the track-record-breaking speed, Mathew Cahill brought Would Be King ($3.40) with a well timed finishing run to win by over two lengths from the Sharon Jeffries, Parkestrained pair Lunar Chara (Andrew Banks, $6.50), and a tenacious Jin Chi Phantom (Will Stanley, $6.50).

This race was run as a memorial to Michael (Slim) Nealon, who contributed a huge amount of voluntary work for the Grenfell Jockey Club and, along with Terry Carroll, was the instigator of the Grenfell Guineas which was, for several years, the leading race for three year olds in country NSW. Ridden by Richard Bensley, Dangers ($1.90 fav) led most of the way to account for Our Blue Moon (Will Stanley, $13) and Golden Eclipse (Shayleigh Ingelse, $5).

The other Andrew Dale winners were Crimosa (Richard Bensley, $2.30) in the 1000 metres Benchmark 58 Handicap and Deploy And Destroy (Richard Bensley, $2), which came from last in the 1200 metres Class 2

A highlight of the very successful Grenfell meeting was a presentation to Terry Carroll and his wife, Deidre Carroll, on their retirement from duties with the Grenfell Jockey Club.

Cobar Races 23 September Over recent years, Dubbo trainer Connie Greig has collected a swag of Cobar Cups and on Saturday she took home the feature race trophy, won by Inzaghi.

This time it was at the Picnic meeting transferred from ComeBy-Chance, north east of Cobar.

With leading jockey Leandro Ribeiro in the

saddle, Inzaghi ($1.60 favourite) raced outside the leader, Merdeka (Grady Spokes, $2.50), before getting the better of the stablemate to win the Cup by over three lengths, with the Wayne Prisk, Cobar-trained Borlotti (Zara Lewis, $3.50) finishing third.

Jan Keppie takes out stableford LADIES’ GOLF Jan Keppie worked her clubs well to take out the stableford event played recently at the C o on aba r abr a n G ol f Club, sponsored by the Coonabarabran Chemist.

This event was well contested, but Jan held out to score the win with 35 points. Well done Jan. Ba l ls were won by Kerrie Ward and Lou Dowsett.

The ladies are tr uly g rateful to the Coonabarabran Chemist and their very friendly, efficient staff for their continuing support over the years. Without the support from our local business houses we would be struggling to continue w ith ou r extensive annual program.

He called a vet friend who told him to bring the cow in.

The vet took one look at the cow, stuck a tube up the cow’s butt and blew into the tube until the cow’s eyes straightened out. T he vet charged the farmer $100 and the farmer went home happy.

About a week later, the cow’s eyes were cross-

eyed again, but this time the farmer figured he could probably take care of it himself, so he called his hired hand over and together they put a tube up the cow’s butt.

The farmer put his lips to the tube and started to blow. Strangely, nothing happened, so he asked his hired hand to give it a try. The hired hand removed the tube, turned it around, put it in the cow’s butt and started to blow.

“What are you doing?” asked the farmer.

“Well, I wasn’t gonna use the side that you had put your lips on!”

Whittall spears bronze in javelin Coonabarabran High School student, Sarah Whittall recently won a bronze medal for her efforts at the NSW Combined High Schools (CHS) Sports Association Secondary Athletics Championships.

Sarah explained that in the javel in competition, all th rowe r s a re al lowed three throws, with the to p e i g ht g et t i n g a n extra three throws.

“A f t e r m y i n i t i a l throws, I was luck y enough to be sitting in eighth position, with a throw of 23.22 metres,” Sarah said.

“My fourth and fifth throws were about the same, but my last throw was 26.40 metres, put ti ng me i nto the bronze-medal position.”

This throw was a personal best for Sarah – a l m o s t fo u r m et re s further than her previous best.

Havi ng com peted against 18 other competitive girls at the championships, Sarah

sa id it was a tough co m pet it i o n, b ut s h e was proud of her efforts on the day. “ I th i n k I d i d rea l l y well and I’m very proud of how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time.”

For Sarah, the highlight of the day was achieving her personal best and discove r ing she could throw much f u r the r tha n s he had thought, motivating her to improve even more.

“In the future I want to progress further, not only in javelin but other events as well,” she said.

“I want to win more titles, get bigger personal bests and break more records.”

When Sarah was announced as the bronze medallist on the day, she said she was i n it i a l l y s h ocked, b ut very excited.

Having started Little Athletics when she was nine years old, Sarah remembered seeing s o m e o l d e r a t h l et e s throwing javelins and thinking it was “really cool”.

“Tracy taught me all the different techniques and showed me how I could improve. When I was at competition, Tra c y wo u l d p rov i d e advice in bet ween each throw or jump in every event I did,” Sarah said. “ I’m so g ratef u l – I w o u l d n’t h a ve b e e n ab l e to do it w ithout her help.

“I’m also very grateful that I get to keep doing the spor t I love most, alongside some of the best 13-year-old girls in the state, with the full support of my amazing coach, my family, and my f r i e n d s . T h ey w i l l always push me to my greatest limits.”

Magnificent setting for Bellata field day

The Outlook Ag field day was held at ‘Lochearn’ Bellata, a magnificent setting with trial crop plots thriving and the Nanedwar Ranges as a backdrop on a cracking spring day.

The field day attracted an impressive crowd of growers, agronomists, and agricultural representatives.

“We’re very happy with the roll-up today; there are growers and people from all around the region,” said Mitch Cuell, agronomist and Outlook Ag director for the Narrabri region.

“We’ve got agronomists from Moree, Walgett, Gunnedah and similarly with the growers, they’ve come from Spring Ridge, Narrabri, Moree to Walgett.

“We’ve got a good bunch of agros from all around the place, which is what we want; we don’t want to keep this information in-house, it’s good to extend it all.

“Today, we’re at Drew Penberthy’s farm ‘Lochearn’, he’s been hosting trials here for 20 years, Kalyx sow them all, and there are trials here with seed companies, chemical companies, nutrition companies.

So, they do their work here and then when it comes to Outlook Ag’s role – we then try and make sure the information is delivered to growers in this sort of platform.”

The field day included discussions about Outlook Ag’s national grower network (NGN) cereal fertiliser trials funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, the GRDC-funded national variety trials, Loam Bio carbon trials, Syngenta Victrato seed treatment, Imtrade herbicidal work, ADAMA chickpea disease and grass weed control trials and a drone weed mapping demonstration.

A stand-out feature was an engaging presentation by Outlook Ag agronomist Drew Penberthy from a large soil pit that had been dug out to clearly demonstrate what happens underground as crops grow and to show the root development within the soil

Northern Tablelands a winner in state budget Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall has welcomed the handing down of the state budget, with almost $612 million in capital investment for the region this financial year.

Mr Marshall said the budget included some big-ticket projects which he feared would be cut by the new government.

Mr Marshall said months of walking the corridors of Parliament House, intensely lobbying new ministers and their staff, had paid off, with the region spared by the government’s razor gang, with funding to complete the new Moree ($80 million) and Glen Innes ($50 million) Hospitals and the Glen Innes Ambulance Station ($8.5 million) locked in, and, pleasingly, the Moree Special Activation Precinct (SAP) received a hefty increase in funding, from $194 million to $224.8 million.

“I’m really pleased, and more than a little relieved, to see the hard work pay off and these key projects avoid being cut or axed altogether and $30.8 million additional funding for the Moree SAP – this is really good news for our region,” Mr Marshall said.

“By working together and hard as a region to put partisan politics to the side and focus on the merits of our communities and our projects, we have managed to convince ministers of our worth and save the furniture in the Northern Tablelands, while others have suffered.

“I’m also thrilled to see that major funding will continue to allow further upgrades on the Newell, Gwydir and New England Highways, as well as the gradual rebuild and upgrade of the notorious Kempsey Road, which is an almost $230 million project in its own right.”

While keen to celebrate these local funding wins, Mr Marshall acknowledged the bitter disappointment in the overall reduction of funding to rural and

regional NSW, including the slashing of cost of living measures to households and regional grant programs.

“While lobbying for our local projects was successful, overall this year’s budget is nothing short of a kick in the guts for country NSW,” he said.

“The government has really slashed and burned, we may have saved the furniture here, but the bigger picture is pretty bleak.

“This budget confirms the Regional Seniors Travel Card has been cut and supports to families like the Active Kids Rebate, the Creative Kids Rebate and the First Lap Voucher have all been scaled back.

“It also cancels the vital Stronger Country Communities Fund, Resources for the Regions Program and all the regional specific sport, cultural and community infrastructure funding programs.

“I believe these are very short-sighted decisions that will only serve to widen the gap between city and country in the state and I think the government will come to regret this in the long run.”

The MP said that cost of living support measures for households have been overlooked in this year’s budget – with pressures on day to day living costs expected to continue.

“Those vouchers such as the Regional Seniors Travel Card, for instance, provided practical household cost relief to more than 12,000 seniors in our region, as did the suite of kids’ vouchers for young families,” Mr Marshall said.

“With those vouchers now off the table or substantially reduced, families will struggle to meet the costs of activities such as sport and arts.

“The outcome in today’s budget overall is good news for the Northern Tablelands, but there will be some serious belt tightening with the bush left behind in the detail.”

Aquatic centre to close for upgrades Moree Artesian Aquatic Centre will temporarily close for five weeks from Tuesday, October 5, for essential upgrade works.

While the tender evaluation for the 50-metre pool reconstruction process continues, Moree Plains Shire Council has secured a contractor to complete fundamental upgrades on the passive and program pools.

Works to be undertaken include a full relining of the program pool, tile maintenance on the passive pool and continued works on the active and wellness pools.

“While we are understanding of the disruption this causes to pool users, it is necessary that we undertake a full relining of the program pool, which is required every 10 to 15 years to ensure of its continued operation” said general manager Kelvin Tytherleigh.

No additional funds for hospital

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson has expressed his disappointment the 2023/24 NSW budget does not include extra funding to deliver the Gunnedah Hospital redevelopment design plans in full. Earlier this year it was revealed not all upgrades planned at the hospital could be delivered under its $53 million funding allocation including new chemotherapy and dialysis treatment facilities.

“The original master plan for the hospital redevelopment is the design the community was consulted on throughout the process, and it is the design the community expects to be delivered,” Mr Anderson said.

“Unfortunately, this budget falls short of meeting our expectation, and we are no clearer to a final decision on the future of the Gunnedah Hospital. What we do know is that the government plans to spend $10.5 million on the hospital over the next 12 months.”

Hooke Moree Plains mayor, deputy Chaffey, re-elected to Gunnedah mayor re-elected unopposed lead Shire Council Moree Plains Shire councillors Mark Johnson and Susannah Pearse were successful in being re-elected as mayor and deputy mayor at last Thursday’s ordinary meeting.

The mayoral elections were held in the council chambers where council also resolved to hold the office of deputy mayor.

One nomination was received for the office of both mayor and deputy mayor, resulting in Cr Johnson and Cr Pearse being re-elected unopposed with no further ballots required.

The elections were held in accordance with the Local Government Act 1993 (the Act) as directed by the Office of Local Government.

After their re-election, both councillors thanked their fellow elected members, council staff and the wider community for their support over the last 20 months.

“I appreciate the confidence and support my fellow councillors give me, the first 12 months were certainly challenging, but it is a privilege to continue to work for the shire to make positive changes”, said

Cr Johnson.

Cr Pearse reiterated the questions posed to all councillors when running for election in December 2021.

Reminding her fellow councillors of their ambitions for the shire, the challenges and the successes that lay ahead and with twelve months left to go, Cr Pearse said: “Let’s make each one count, and tick off our wish lists for our shire”.

“We are fortunate to have a council team that brings so much passion and expertise to the table and it is my continued privilege to sit alongside you all”, said Cr Pearse.

The term of office for the mayor and deputy mayor will run until September 14, 2024, before the next local government elections will be held and all councillor positions become vacant.

Gunnedah Shire councillors re-elected the leadership team of mayor Jamie Chaffey and deputy mayor Rob Hooke at last Wednesday’s council meeting.

At the mayoral election, the mayor and deputy mayor were elected by councillors in accordance with the Local Government Act 1993 that stipulates mid-term mayoral elections.

Cr Chaffey and Cr Hooke will hold the mayor and deputy mayor positions until the council elections anticipated to take place in September 2024.

Of his re-election, Cr Chaffey said it was an honour to be elected to serve another term as mayor of the Gunnedah Shire.

“I am deeply passionate about leading progress and development of our community and I look forward to working with my fellow councillors and staff over the next 12 months,” he said.

Cr Hooke said he was pleased to be elected for another term as deputy mayor of the Gunnedah Shire “I would like to thank my fellow councillors for having faith in me to continue in this position supporting mayor Chaffey,” Cr Hooke said.

Varroa mite plan changes from eradication to management Following the recent decision of the National Management Group to transition the Varroa mite emergency eradication response to a Management Response Plan, NSW Department of Primary Industries is working with industry on next steps.

NSW DPI director general Scott Hansen said that NSW will operate under an interim management strategy, which has been published in a new Emergency Order, while a National Management Plan for Transition to Management is being developed.

“Following the NMG decision yesterday [September 19] to transition to management, the NMG also agreed to an interim strategy to limit the impacts and slow the spread of Varroa mite, which NSW DPI has begun working with all our stakeholders to implement today,” Mr Hansen said.

“We will continue to provide information and support to industry, using learnings from the past fifteen months during which the spread of this invasive mite has been significantly delayed thanks to the tireless efforts of the response team.”

NSW DPI deputy director general biosecurity and food safety, Dr John Tracey said under the conditions of the interim management strategy, the whole state will either be in a Suppression Zone or Management Zone.

“The only Management Zones will be in the existing Emergency Eradication Zones in the Kempsey, Hunter and Central

Coast regions,” Dr Tracey said.

“Free movement will be allowed within Management Zones, and movement outside Management Zones will be allowed under risk-assessed permit conditions.

“The rest of the state will be classified as being in the Suppression Zone, where hive movements will be allowed so long as movement declarations are completed.”

Dr Tracey said the interim management arrangements are designed to balance risk with business continuity.

“Beekeepers in all current Emergency Eradication (red) Zones will have the option of voluntary euthanasia of hives and subsequent access to Owner Reimbursement payments if they meet certain conditions,” Dr Tracey said.

“NSW beekeepers have been through a lot over the past fifteen months, so I want to remind them to reach out to DPI as we have a range of tools to support them through these challenging times.”

Under the interim strategy, all beekeepers in NSW will still be required to complete hive testing (alcohol washing, soapy water wash or miticide strip and sticky mat) and report results to DPI every 16 weeks.

Where results indicate a mite infestation DPI will supply miticide strips to be installed in infested hives.

Hive movement declarations must be submitted to DPI for all movements of hives and all miticide treatments must be recorded and reported to DPI.

Strawberry & Banana Yoghurt Muffins

STEP 2 Place banana, melted butter, eggs, buttermilk or milk and yoghurt in a jug. Whisk to combine. Using a large metal spoon, stir banana mixture into dry ingredients until just combined. Spoon mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 25 minutes until golden and cooked through. Stand in pans for 10 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to cool. Dust with icing sugar and serve.

Preparation 20 min | Cooking 25 min | Makes 12 INGREDIENTS 2 cups self-raising flour 3⁄4 cup brown sugar 250g strawberries, hulled and chopped 1 very ripe banana, mashed 100g butter, melted and cooled 2 eggs 1⁄2 cup buttermilk or milk 1⁄2 cup reduced fat natural yoghurt Icing sugar, for dusting STEP 1 Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Line a 12 x 1⁄2 cup muffin pan with paper cases. Sift flour into a large bowl. Stir in sugar and strawberries. Set aside.
