Coonabarabran has been rocked by a series of fires over the past week, with Fire and Rescue NSW attending to five separate incidents in as many days. While authorities have yet to confirm if the fires are linked, the fires are being treated as suspicious.

New leadership steers Warrumbungle Shire Warrumbungle Shire Council has a new leadership team, with Kathryn Rindfleish taking the helm as mayor and Jason Newton elected as deputy mayor.

The mayoral elections were conducted at the extra-ordinary Council me et i n g held at t he Council Chambers in Coonabarabran o n T hu r s d ay, 1 9 September. Neither role was contested by other councillors.

Warrumbungle Shire Council acting general ma n ager, L i nd say Mason cong ratulated both Cr Rindfleish and Cr Newton on their new roles.

Mayor Cr Rindfleish and her family have been closely involved in the Coolah community for years.

She has successfully operated multiple small businesses and involved herself in various committees.

She sa id she was passionate about local government and continuing to support all towns/v illages, a nd residents i n the Warrumbungle Shire.

“I’m happy with the outcome regarding the selection of councillors that have been appointed, it’s a good

mixture of knowledge across the board,” Cr Rindfleish said.

“I’d just like to say thank you to the excouncillors who have put so much work into t h e Wa r r u m b u n g l e Shire.”

In a mayoral address, she sa id , “ F i rst a nd foremost I would like t o t h a n k my f e l l o w c ou nc i l lor s for t hei r trust and support for nom i nation for the position of mayor, and I would like to assure you that I will strive to build and continue the good work of my predecessor, Ambrose Doolan.

“I am committed to ef fe c t ive gover na nce of the Council, which i nc lude s a k i nd a nd inclusive approach in the role as mayor an I welcome the opportunity to lead the Warrumbungle Shire Council as we navigate through ever-changing times and look forward to building a stronger, more ef fective team, working with our councillors.”

Deputy mayor Cr Newton has been a local business owner for 25 years, and has supported a range of c ommu n it y g r oups – especially by helping improve facilities.

A goa l- or ient at ed person who loves a good challenge, Cr Newton said he enjoys working on the land and helping others see the potential of our community and its unique location. “ For mysel f , bei ng i nvolved i n C ou nc i l , it h a s r e a l ly b e en a work in progress over 20 years. “ My Dad nagged and nagged for me to get into Council, and I promised him that I would...and I did; he got to see me do that. “ I ’m p r e t t y p r o ud to be given this opportunity. Kathryn will do a good job as mayor and I’ll support her in that.”

Local fires being investigated FROM FRONT On Friday, 20 September, NSW Fire and Rescue Station 264 was tasked to a fire in bushland near Deane Street, Coonabarabran, Just an hour later, at 5.30pm, the crew was called to another fire burning in scrub behind homes in Clarke Street.

Fire-fighters were quick to contain both blazes before any significant damage occurred.

In the early hours of Saturday mor ning, emergency services were called to a more alar ming incident at a residence in John Street, Coonabarabran, adjacent to the Visitor Information Centre.

At around 3.30am, a fire broke out in an abandoned home, which was well alight by the time firefighters arrived.

NSW Fire and Rescue were supported on the scene by volunteers from NSW Rural Fire Service.

The property, which is currently owned by the Coonabarabran

Local Aboriginal Land Council, was slated for removal as part of the Culturally Responsive Design Housing Project, with designs for four units to be constructed on the site at a later date.

The building had stood vacant for the past decade, with no water or electricity connected.

The premises was also known to contain asbestos.

Despite being empty for years, the house held rich cultural significance, having been a home to several local Indigenous families over the years.

There were no reports of injuries in the John Street fire, but officers from the Orana MidWestern Police District are treating the incident as serious.

In another separate incident, a fire was reported in bushland at around 11.30am on Tuesday, 24 September near Field Street, Coonabarabran.

Crews from NSW Fire and Rescue and NSW Rural Fire Service responded swiftly,

ensuring that the flames did not spread to nearby properties.

The fire destroyed approximately 2.5 acres of bushland and reignated later that night.

While no injuries have been reported, the frequency and suspicious nature of the fires have left the community on edge.

Authorities are urging residents to stay vigilant and report any unusual activity.

Police were told there have been five similar fires in the same area over the past week.

Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District have commenced an investigation into the fires, which they believe are suspicious.

As inquiries continue, anyone with information about these incidents, or has dashcam or CCTV from the area is urged to contact Coonabarabran Police Station or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bloomin’ beautiful evening Coonabarabran was lit up with its very own ‘VIVID” over the weekend. With a country twist, the ‘Blooming Birds Spring Fest’ celebrated spring in all its colour.

The festival was a part of the NSW Government’s ‘Open Streets Program’, lending a strong artistic flair to Dalgarno Street, w ith va r ious stal l s, creative activities and live music.

The highlight was the projection of local artists’ works onto the old cinema in a mesmerising kaleidoscope of talent.

The effor ts blended local committees, organisations and Wa r r u m b u n g l e S h i r e Council.

Ngaire Stevens, acting di rector of cor porate and dommunity services, issued a statement commending all involved on pulling off such a monumental task.

“Council is thrilled to repor t the resounding success of the Bloomin’ Birds Springfest as part of the NSW Government’s Open Streets Program,” she said.

“It has signif icantly boosted our local economy and we were delighted to collaborate with numerous businesses, community g roups, and talented individuals to create a vibrant and engaging event.

“Local artists, m u s i c i a n s , wo r k s h o p providers, photographers a n d b u s i n e s s e s a l i ke contr ibuted to the program’s success. “ W e w e r e

particularly impressed by the i nvo lvement of co m m u n i t y organisations like Netball, Physie, VRA, Girl Guides, and schools, as well as the enthusiastic participation of stallholders and food vendors.

Year 7 girls, who shared an Acknowledgement of Country and sang 'We are One' in Gamilaraay language.”

A second festival will be held in Coolah on 7 December – the ‘Coolah Christmas Carnival and Parade’ – will everyone welcome to attend.

Poppies pave the way for remembrance A heartfelt community project to honour service personnel on Remembrance Day has quickly garnered overwhelming community support.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Marie Knight recently put forward a p roposa l fo r the creati on of a knitted carpet of poppies to place in front of Coonabarabran’s Clock Towe r M e m o r i a l Ce n ota p h o n Remembrance Day. After seeing a similar carpet of poppies at Dubbo during ANZAC Day services last year, Mrs Knight thought this would be a wonderful way for the community to show their respect for past and present service personnel.

When she floated the idea on social media, the project was greeted with enthusiasm from all sectors of the local community. “ I h a ve b e e n a m a z e d by t h e response of both locals and those that have family members named on the memorial wall,” she said.

“People are talking about it on the street, so I am hopeful of having something done for Remembrance Day on 11th November – and a further t wo ca r p et s co m p l ete d by n ex t

ANZAC Day.” M r s K n i g ht s a i d s h e h a d b e e n contacted by a woman from Wagga Wa g g a , e x p l a i n i n g t h a t o n e o f h e r re l at i ves wa s n a m e d o n t h e Ce n ota p h a n d s o s h e wo u l d b e knitting 100 poppies for the project.

A local stockist of red wool ordered extra supplies on Monday and sold out a week later.

“We all have someone we have lost or who we have never met, and still more who enlist to protect us and our values, so we promised to remember them and respect the work they do,” Mrs Knight said. “ I have been ove r whel med by the generosit y of spi r it this has b e e n w e l c o m e d w i t h , i t ’s v e r y heartwarming.”

The aim is for the poppy blanket to be placed on both sides of the Clocktower Cenotaph.

Donations can be dropped off to the Regional Australia Bank or the Coonabarabran Library.

A number of knitted poppies have already been created for the new project.

Marie Knight was inspired for the poppy project after spotting an ANZAC poppy display at the Dubbo War Memorial.

Mia’s hooked on crotchet At just 11 years of age, Mia Freebairn is set to become a business entrepreneur through her already booming crochet business, with her first order recently being sent to Canada.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Back in April, after a fellow student in Mia’s class brought along a crochet project, Mia commenced learning the handicraft from her grandmother and became ‘hooked’, also teaching herself through YouTube videos, and crocheting every day since.

Mia said it has been easy, with her mum, Jenna, jumping in to explain that though Mia is left-handed, she hasn’t been using left-handed tutorials.

“I just do it backwards,” Mia said.

“When I started I created a lot of things, and didn’t have any room for them. I was getting a lot of inspiration off of Etsy, and then I asked Dad if I could have my own little shop, so he set it up for me.”

Mia has sold crocheted whales of various sizes and colours, along with bees, octopi, turtles and more, but that’s not where her skill set ends.

“I sometimes use patterns for bigger things that I’ve never made, but I also make my own patterns.”

The smaller plushies only take Mia an hour after school, while the big ones might take her two days.

Her desk is all set up with a corkboard with a

list of jobs to do, and a tub for all her yarn and accessories.

Mia’s Etsy shop is also selling one of her patterns, and while she has premade some items, now she’s leaning into personalised orders, which may include changing the colour.

After a month of having her store set up and waiting patiently for her first order, about a week ago she received one from all the way from Canada.

Mia remembers it vividly, with much excitement.

“That was super exciting, because I ran out to Mum and was like, ‘I’ve got my first order!”

Mrs Freebairn recalled, “she was so excited, nearly in tears with excitement.”

Since then, Mia has had another seven sales on Etsy, plus half a dozen through her Instagram page (managed by Jenna), and another eight still to create.

She packs all the orders with a personalised note and sticker.

“I’m saving most of it, and spending the rest on supplies,” Mia explained, using her father’s skills as an accountant to make sure her items are priced right.

Her goal is to turn her hobby into a little market stall, hopefully for the Christmas markets, and she’s already got plans for new designs.

Mr Brain reflects on funerals, family and faith After close to 70 years conducting funeral services, Tony Brain has made the difficult decision to step down, but looks back on his time with sincere earnestness, gratitude and a deep sense of fulfillment.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Born and raised in Coona, Mr Brain never saw conducting funerals as just a ‘job’ or ‘work.’

Instead, he views it as a gift from God that has shaped and defined his life.

“In my own life, I’ve experienced death in many ways,” he said.

“My own father was driving to Dubbo, hit a tree.

“Phone call.

“Shock.

“My son drove me over to Dubbo to identify the body and, fortunately for me, there was a very beautiful Presbyterian minister in Coona who was there at the time, and he was such a strength, as was my cousin Ian.” Mr Brain himself has been a strength, comfort a nd a pa r t of ma ny families’ lives.

While he struggles to recall the first funeral he ever officiated, he remembers an early one that touches him years later.

“A g r a nd m o t he r had d ied, and the g r a n d d au g h t e r w a s really grief-stricken,” Mr Brain said. “ W hen the ser v ice at the cemeter y was finished, I was walking away a nd s o low i n my s p i r i t , s o d o w n hearted, feeling for the family, particularly the granddaughter. “ In those days you had to wear a long black cassock and a white top.

“At the time, I didn’t have a beard, and there

was a mother and a little boy walking out at the same time as I was, and they stopped to talk for a little bit, and the little boy looked up at me and said, ‘a re you Jesus’ father?’

“It just took me out of where I was in my headspace, and I’ve never forgotten that. “ W hat I f ind when y ou’r e c onduc t i n g a service, is there are many people, but they’re all seeing one face.

“I see many faces, and if there are very young children, in particular, you feel so much for their sorrow and grief.

“It is very emotional, very draining, but I do it in God’s strength. “ I c ou ld not do it without my faith, and my belief in Jesus Christ. “ It ’s my fa ith that keeps me going.”

This faith is one that Mr Brain discusses with immense dignity, respect and awareness, “I’m different in the way that at a time when people are experiencing g r ief or s or r ow, particularly in times of a sudden death where shock is there, there’s no way I’d hit them over the head with a Bible.

“I wouldn’t want to preach a sermon, I want to give them as much peace, care, comfort and hope as I can.”

When families appr o a c h h i m , t he y meet in his house, in a warm sunroom, with big windows, comfortable chairs, and a bird feeder outside where all manner

of birds gather.

“We sit out here with a coffee, and we’ll talk for two hours, and in that time of talking we discuss what they want to do.”

It ’s sy mpat hy a nd support that Mr Brain offers. “ I ’ve been at the bedside of persons who are dying, things that touch you deeply, but it g ives me a bett er understanding of people, and where they’re coming from and what they’re feeling. “ I u s e d t o s ay t o pe ople, ‘ I k now how you’re feeling’, but I don’t anymore because I don’t know.

“I might say, ‘I have an idea of how you’re feeling’.

“I do believe it’s the ministry from God to sha re pe ople’s l ives, particularly in times of shock and sorrow. “ I say to people at times where it’s been such a sudden death that you’ve got to work your way through the shock before you can sta r t processing the death.

“There’s no right way t o g r ieve, there’s no wrong way to grieve, there’s only your way.”

Acknowledgement Local funeral directors Stephen and A l ison Wa lt on , f rom Castlereagh Funerals, acknowledged the service Mr Brain had given over many years to the local and district community. “ We h ave h ad t he honour and privilege to work with Tony for nearly

10 years,” they said.

“We have seen first h a nd the ded ic at ion he has g iven to each ser v ice and the care and compassion shown to the families. During the saddest of times, Tony has been there for ou r commu n ities of Coonabarabran,

Baradine and Binnaway. “ We wou ld l i ke t o publicly acknowledge and thank Tony for his years of service.”

Mr Brain expressed his sadness about his decision to retire, “ I feel ver y heav y hearted that this is it,” Mr Brain said.

“It’s something that was very much give and take – probably more give than take – but it was so fulfilling, I shared people’s lives and loves. “ I ’ve l ive d a l l my life in Coona, I know so many people and so many people know me, not only in Coona, but in

Baradine, Binnaway and the district.

“It’s going to take a while to adjust to where I’m at.

“It’s different, it’s hard, but what’s that A LDI saying? ‘Good Different’? “ My g o o d w i l l b e different.”

Pilliga wildflower bonanza The Pilliga Forest is blooming in all its glory with a spectacular show of spring wildflowers.

by LIZ CUTTS It’s an ancient and u n i q u e p l a ce a n d a tough competitive life for plants in the forest with limited water, hot dry summers and cold winters. But this year, a wet te r-t h a n - a ve ra g e winter has stimulated a mass of plants into producing some stunning floral displays.

An enthusiastic group of locals recently went on a tag - a - l ong tou r of the Pi l l iga Fo rest’s w i l df l owe r h ot s p ot s .

Bilby Boom’s native plant identification exper ts, Anthony O’Halloran and A n n a b e l l e G re e n u p, accompanied by e nv i ro n m e nta l i s t Su e B r o o k h o u s e, l e d t h e ex pedition i nto the wildflower spectacle.

“This is probably the best spring flowering that I have ever seen in the Pilliga,” Mr O’Halloran said.

“Coming in from the east on number one break road and heading nor th up Rock y Road into County Line Road is just spectacular, as well as at the Sculptures in the Scrub.

“The season has been particularly good in the n o r t h e r n p a r t of t h e forest, not too frosty and regular water for around the l as t si x to eig ht months have pushed it all along. Normally, our w i nte r s i nvo lve f ros t y dry spells, but we have barely had more than three or frosts in row – it has been frequently mild and wet.

“There is a cascade of species com i ng i n a little bit earlier than normal. You will see the Dampiera adpressa, a prominent blue flower,

on the sides of the roads such as Ironbark Crossing and Burma Road.

“One of the plants I have a soft spot for is the Mint Bush and the species that is dominant in the forest at the moment is a beautiful purple one that really comes out at you particularly on the rocky ridges. Usually, you see just one or two plants here and there, but this year they are jumping out at you with lots of flowe r s. I have neve r seen it before, they are very striking. “ I n t h e p u re w h i te depar tment, the Weddi ng Bush is al so stunning and you can see this on number one break and Burma Road. There is a b e a u t i f u l We s t r i n g i a cheelii around the Salt C a ve s a n d , to w a r d s t h e n o r t h e r n s e ct i o n of Countr y Line Road and headi ng up to Schwaggers Bore, there is the pink Phebalium nottii, which is an amazing hot pink flower with yellow stamens; it is eye-catching.

“The narrowleaved hop bush is an outstanding red. Since it is the fruit that give colour, they will be in f ierce display fo r the next few weeks. These pendulous plants a re growing up to two metres and standing above the white Westr ingia and blue Dampiera they give a wonderful display.”

Earlier M r O’H a l l o ra n sa i d although many of the p l a nt s a re f l owe r i n g earlier than normal, flower ing of dif ferent species going r ight th rough to Octobe r and November can be expected.

“Some of the plants flowe r i n response to the amount of daylight and some flower in response to the ambient temperatures,” he said.

“The ambient temperatures are around two weeks early this year and the plants that flower on a given

amount of light are right on t i m e, so both a re doing really well.”

K n o w n a s a b i o d i ve r s i t y h ot s p ot, the Pilliga contains an e s t i m a te d 9 0 0 p l a nt species, including some now w idel y g row n i n cu ltivation, as wel l a s m a ny t h re ate n e d

species. It is a mixture of a state reserve, national park and state forest.

“I have dr iven over 300 kilometres through the forest and the good news is that there are ve r y few i nt ro d u ce d p l ant species to be seen,” M r O’Ha l l o ran added.

“The Pilliga Forest is a joyous expression of Au s t ra l i a n b e a ut y without any feral plants getting in the way.

“Also, a reminder that the birds are something to look for at the moment. On our drive through the forest the wo o d s wa l l ow s we re

just sitting on the ground looking for insects and the Rainbow Bee-eaters should be arriving soon in October – they are a most beautiful bird.

“So, just go out there a n d e n j o y n a t u r e’ s wo n d e r r i g ht o n o u r doorstep.”

Local teacher awarded Premier’s Scholarship Danielle Barisa was recently awarded the ‘Premiers University of NSW Rural and Remote Education Scholarship’ in recognition of her efforts in supporting regional and remote education as a teacher at Coonabarabran High School and Gunnedah Public School.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY The award is part of the ‘NSW Premier’s Teacher Scholarship’, providing $10,000 or $15,000 for a fiveweek study tour within Australia or abroad, delivering significant outcomes for scholarship recipients, students, teacher colleagues, and school communities.

Ms Barisa’s study tour will focus on teacher mentoring beyond the early career stage.

“Research indicates that teacher self-efficacy tends to be at its lowest around seven years into the profession, which is also when a growing number of teachers across the country unfortunately leave the classroom due to burnout and a lack of support,” she said.

“Obviously, that stage is a is a really critical time when teachers need support the most, yet the current system does not adequately address this need.

“My study tour will explore how mentoring could help bridge that gap.”

The nomination process involved a proposal for the applicant’s study tour, research plans and study-tour locations.

A select panel was also convened for each scholarship, made of five representatives from the

sponsoring organisation, government and nongovernment schools, professional associations, TAFE campuses and preschools.

Each panel included a subject matter expert, who initially shortlisted applications that most closely aligned with the criteria of the scholarship and objectives of the program.

The shortlisted applications were then forwarded to the selection panel for final review.

On the process, Ms Barisa said, “two of the panel members are now my supervisors – Tony Loughland, UNSW Faculty of Education Associate Professor, and Chris Miller, Policy Manager for Regional, Rural and Remote Implementation in the Department of Education.”

Ms Barisa also explained that being a recipient of this award would open many “exciting doors”.

“I am excited to gain insights into educational challenges and innovations in rural NSW and Europe, broadening my perspective on teaching strategies, curriculum development, and student engagement.

“I am really excited about what could come from this!”

As a teacher at both Coonabarabran High

and Gunnedah Public Schools, Ms Barisa said she feels no shortage of support from her colleagues. “ Ma ry Doola n ha s been a constant source of support throughout my teaching career and was the one who encouraged me to pursue the scholarship, and relieving principal Duncan Graham was very supportive as well.

“Their encouragement was what gave me the confidence and motivation to apply.

“Also, my generous colleagues at Coonabarabran High School are always more than happy to help me brainstorm ideas for my study tour, and they often ask me for updates and details about its progress.

“It is a very supportive school.

“The staff at Gunnedah Public School have also been wonderful, particularly Donna Austin, assistant principal mentor, who played a key role in inspiring my research topic.”

Ms Barisa said she was very grateful for the chance to make a positive impact on rural and remote education.

“Teaching in rural areas is important work.

“Educational inequity is something I have a really hard time accepting. Every student,

regardless of location, deserves the chance to reach their full potential and access opportunities.

“Rural communities face unique challenges, and I think both students and teachers should be supported to face and overcome these challenges.

“It is a real privilege that I get to be a part of that journey.”

Overall, Ms Barisa said it was very exciting to be a scholarship recipient.

“I am really looking forward to it.

“I am really passionate about teaching and supporting students in building bright futures.

“This a great opportunity to explore new ideas and educational practices – not just for my own growth, but to bring valuable insights back to the schools and communities I work with and, ultimately, benefit students.

“This scholarship opens doors to experiences that will shape my future as an educator.

“Last week, I spoke to an academic in Switzerland who couldn’t believe that NSW teachers have the opportunity to do something like this – she had never heard of anything similar. I feel really lucky.”

POLICE NEWS Shots fired – Dunedoo A man has faced court following alleged shots fired in the Dunedoo area last week.

A bout 1.5 0 pm on Tuesday, 17 September, police were called to Patrick Road, Dunedoo, fol low i n g r ep or t s o f shots fired in the area.

and commenced an investigation into the incident.

Following inquiries, around 9.50pm police attended a property on Patrick Road, Dunedoo and arrested a 64-yearold man.

During a search of the property, officers located and seized six firearms and the man’s

firearms permit.

The man was taken to Dunedoo Police Station, where he issued a future court attendance notice for fire firearm manner likely injure persons/ property.

On Thursday, 12 September, an excursion from Yuluwiri Kids attended the Little People Fun Day held at Number One Oval, Coonabarabran.

The annual event aimed at children aged 0-5 years featured a variety of activities and entertainment provided

by community services and agencies.

The children participated in craft activities provided by Barnardos, Gunnedah Family Day Care and Warrumbungle Shire Council and were particularly excited to interact with emergency services personnel, including the VRA,

rural fire service, and ambulance.

Connect Five Children's Services provided a mega-obstacle course that proved to be a popular attraction, while Creative Community Concepts kept the kids entertained with their Footy for Fun activity.

Other highlights of the day included a

child and family health nurse on hand to provide advice, vision screening, and dental health information.

Overall, the Little People Fun Day was a fantastic community event that provided a fun and educational experience for young children and their families.

Educators and children from Yuluwirri Kids learning about emergency services at the Little People Fun Day.

1970’S PURLEWAUGH CRICKET TEAM I have an oil painting done by Sue Graham in the early 1970s. It was painted one afternoon during a cricket match against a local team on the Purlewaugh Cricket Ground (PCG). It shows 15 people on the ground, which consisted of two umpires, two batsmen and 11 fieldsmen. I can remember Sue setting up her easel on the square-leg boundary and creating the painting in one go.

The painting hung in the Imperial Hotel for many years until Max Hawkins retired and gave it to me.

There is no green grass in the picture, apart from the trees and some wheat in the background. Just the bare ground, which was the main feature of the PCG. There were 11 teams in the cricket competition in those days – three in Coonaba rabran, namely Warrumbungles, L eag ues, a nd Castlereagh, together with two in Binnaway,

and one each in Baradine, Coolah, Dunedoo, Merrygoen, Mendooran and Purlewaugh.

The reason that there is little, if any, interest in cricket nowadays, is manyfold. There are not enough young people available. Those that are, are more interested in the many other sports now played, and young people have multiple jobs to make ends meet. Mobile phones and television are other reasons.

Purlewaugh won the premiership in 1971/72 and again in 1981/82. It was a long time between f inals’ wins. We had played in nearly all grand finals through the 1970s and it took a long time to get a win, A f t er 3 7 ye a r s o f playing cricket, I decided it was time to retire. I had played for 15 years as the Purlewaugh and District wicket keeper.

My eyesight was failing, I needed glasses, and the ball was starting to crack my hands and fingers.

Coona Tennis serves up a successful season As the season wraps up for mixed Thursday night tennis, the Coonabarabran Tennis Club has celebrated another successful season, bolstered by a strong community of sponsors and members.

Following the presentation, the Tennis Club raffle was drawn, with first prize of a D u n l o p te n n i s ra cq u et, donated by Rod Kirks, going to t h e M o p p et t fa m i l y. A number of other raffles were also drawn on the evening.

With aspirations to reach a membership milestone of 100, the club is thriving.

Coonabarabran Tennis Club president, Warwick Moppett said the club currently had around 80 registered members and we re hopi ng to h it a century come next year.

“In the last three months of our most recent competition, we’ve s e e n a n ot i ce a b l e increase in players on the court and want to continue that momentum,” Mr Moppett said.

“We’re hoping that we can

get a few new players down to social tennis and that they will join one of our competitions in term four.”

The club offers a vibrant mix of activities including ladies, mixed and junior programs, catering to players of all ages and abilities.

“Ladies’ tennis star ts our tennis week off with teams of four, who play three games for the night and this is carried out over the school term, all thanks to club organisers Yvonne Rice and Kat Christoff,” Mr Moppett said.

“Thursday night is mixed tenni s, w ith teams of fou r made up of women, men and juniors who play three games for the night – two lots of fast fours and a best of eight.

“Friday swings round and juniors hit the courts for a hit and some skills’ training.”

The Coonabarabran Tennis Cl u b w i l l n ow h os t soci a l tennis, which w i l l be held over the next three weeks on Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, while a special ‘Members and Friends Day’ will be held on Sunday, 20 October, starting from 10am.

Coach, Rod Kirk, has been invited along to join the day, along with all members of the community.

“No.” Getting really annoyed, Bill bowled the fastest ball of his career. It not only hit the middle stump, but splintered it, sending the bails into orbit.

“Nearly got him that time,” said Bill.

Beazley Cup Last Sunday, 22 September, 27 holes of mixed foursomes was played at the Coonabarabran Golf Club for the Beazley Cup. The day commenced with the draw –and some bets were made on a couple of teams.

After 18 holes it was looking like Frank Clifton and Jan Keppie might have had the win – they were beating the lowest handicap team in the event, off the stick!

But, after a beer, Frank put Jan in several places where she had never been before and they had a few nines on the score card after all that.

Quietly though, in the other group our new player, Kat Christoff, and John Davis were doing even better.

Kat definitely saw some different areas of the course, but her and John happened to be the winning team of the day – picking up the big trophy at presentation night.

Ball winners were Lou and Stass and Sandra and Graeme Keppie.

C omi ng up, there w i l l be a stableford played on 28 September, with the Astronomy Cup 4BBB on 5 October, with some great prizes and sponsorship from the Australian National University.

Ashanti scores with Rabbitohs’ debut A local young sportswoman is successfully fulfilling her dream as a women’s rugby league player.

“Playing with the Rabbitohs was an incredible experience,” Ashanti said. “ I was a bit ne r vous steppi ng onto the f iel d for the fi rst time as I was selected as thei r star ting number 9. However, this is what I have been working so hard to achieve.

“The suppo r t from my f a m i l y, f r i e n d s , t e a m mates and ever yone back home made it even more memorable. It was a challenging and an intense game, but it felt great to finally get to play.”

“Af ter f inishing playing number 6 fo r West T iger s Tarsha Gale team, I went on to play for the Narellan Opens Women’s team in the Macarthur Opens Women’s c o m p e t i t i o n ,” A s h a n t i added.

“Unfortunately, we were

defeated in the grand final, b ut I wa s g ratef u l to b e awarded the club’s best and fairest player at the Narellan Women’s presentation.

“The Rabbitohs had an invitation trial at the end of last year and I was given the opportunity to trial, where I ga i ned selection i nto the squad. My prefer red position is 6, but I am happy to play any where on the f i e l d a nd be pa r t of the team.”

Ashanti said she was happy with her achievements and considered her debut with the Rabbitohs a significant m i l es tone i n he r footba l l journey.

“It has taken a lot of hard wo r k, commitment and dedication that led to this point, and I will never forget it,” she said.

“However, there is a long road ahead and I am excited for new opportunities and look for ward to what the future brings.

“I just want to say how g ratef u l I a m a n d t h a n k everyone for their continued support.

“I look for ward to p l a y i n g i n t h e We s t e r n Wo m e n’s C o m p et i t i o n with Castlereagh over the n ex t few m o nt h s . I n t h e meantime, I am continuing w i t h my s t u d i e s , s ta y i n g committed, training hard, p l a y i n g w o m e n’s r u g b y league and will hopefully gain some trials and pick up another contract in the coming season.

Keeping Aboriginal children connected to culture, country Winanga-Li’s goal is always to keep Aboriginal children connected to culture and country.

Non-Aboriginal carers are encouraged to have a commitment to supporting children in maintaining a strong Aboriginal identity.

Children’s cultural engagement is supported through Winanga-Li’s team of Aboriginal workers, cultural camps and cultural education with a dedicated cultural mentor, providing Gamilaraay language resources, linking children with age-appropriate Winanga-Li activities and programs, facilitating family contact, and providing training to non-Aboriginal carers about culturally informed care.

In regards to foster care, carers from diverse backgrounds are welcome and Winanga-Li is always happy to share knowledge to build cultural inclusion.

The dedicated Winanga-Li team works to find carers who can support children and young people in a variety of care arrangements.

These arrangements include respite placement (considered to be between two and 28 days), short term (this may be required for any length of time from one month to two years. This placement is dependent on the court system and whether restoration to birth family or kinship placement is in order), long term (a placement that is required when the Department of Communities and Justice have assessed all family options and believe it is in the child’s best interest to remain in care until 18 years), and kinship (kinship is when a child has family members that are willing to take full-time care).

Businesses from across region honoured at Business NSW NENW awards night The business communities of the New England North West celebrated their finest as local enterprises took centre stage at the annual NENW Business Awards.

Held at Gunnedah Town Hall on Friday night, the full event highlighted the strength and diversity of the region, with Glen Innes, Gunnedah, Narrabri, Tamworth, Tingha, Uralla and Walcha all well represented among the winners.

Diane Gray, Business NSW regional director, NENW, said between all the finalists and winners, it is truly inspiring to see how local businesses, whether small or large, are leading the way in innovation, diversity, and community impact.

“Tonight’s full house is a testament to the pride and support our region has for its business leaders and entrepreneurs,” Ms Gray said.

The Central Hospitality Group continued its dominance by securing the prestigious title of Business of the Year for the second consecutive year. CH Group also took home awards for Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion and Employer of Choice (Over 21 Employees).

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN BUSINESS: Trophy winners and chamber officials assemble on stage following the conclusion of the Narrabri and District Chamber of Commerce’s gala business awards dinner held at The Crossing Theatre. More than 300 people attended the chamber’s annual dinner.

Celebrating success at Narrabri chamber’s gala business awards

The North West’s largest employer, Whitehaven Coal, has been awarded Business of the Year at the Narrabri and District Chamber of Commerce Santos Business Awards.

This year’s gala awards dinner was again staged at The Crossing Theatre, with more than 300 people assembled inside the auditorium.

Comedian Kat Davidson presided as master-of-ceremonies, with updates provided by chamber president Russell Stewart and Santos’ NSW development manager Brendon Child prior to the presentation of awards.

Businesses across the broad spectrum of sectors and industries were represented at the celebration.

The evening marked the 18th Narrabri and District Chamber of Commerce-hosted event. Mr Stewart said it was great to see continued support for the evening, with tickets to the dinner selling out two weeks prior to the event.

This year’s chamber dinner was again heavily subsidised thanks to the contribution of sponsoring businesses.

“It is the biggest business gathering in the region,” Mr Stewart.

“Our business awards are always exceptional value for money thanks to our sponsors.”

The chamber again kept ticket prices for the gala gathering the same as last year while continuing to offer a three-course

dinner and drinks package.

Mr Stewart congratulated the trophy winners and award nominees for their contributions to the community.

“You should be proud of yourselves to be recognised for what you do,” Mr Stewart said. “Chamber is proud of all businesses and will continue to enthusiastically represent the community.”

Mr Stewart has encouraged people to start thinking about nominations for next year’s awards.

“Our awards are the envy of most chambers. We are recognised as a particularly strong chamber,” Mr Stewart said.

“Out-of-town visitors have said it was the best awards night they have been to.”

Representatives of Business NSW who were also in attendance on the evening praised the significance of the Narrabri Chamber’s awards event.

Following the success of the business awards, the chamber will now turn its attention to the much-loved Narrabri Christmas Street Carnival to be held in December.

The event will again be held on a Friday evening.

“We’ve tried to keep it affordable for families,” Mr Stewart said of the street carnival.

The street carnival is a significant undertaking by the chamber across many years and draws thousands of people for an evening of festive fun in the primary retail section of Maitland Street.

Mullaley raises more than $13k for World’s Greatest Shave Crowd exceeds 200 at leukemia fundraiser held at Mullaley Hotel

A crowd of more than 200 were present at the Mullaley Hotel to support their local publican, Kim Meyers, as she bravely shaved her hair to raise money for The World’s Greatest Shave.

The local inspiration came from a conversation with good friend Jodie Holledge, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2017.

Kim said cancer patients in the country face significant adversity when undergoing treatment, compared to those in the city.

“Patients have to take leave from their jobs, pay for transport, find accommodation ... and have to organise this all while they are most likely feeling ill at the time,” said Kim. “Jodie informed me of a place dear to her heart - the Leukemia House, and how she had stayed there while undergoing her treatment. I was blown away to find out that a place like this existed, a place where people could stay free of charge. I said to Jodie ‘how can I help?’ and we quickly decided I would shave to raise money.”

The publican took on the hair shave hesitantly as she hadn’t had short hair since primary school.

“I have always had long hair, so at

More than $13,000 was raised on the night with more money expected to flow in over the next few months.

“We still have a variety of items which we are raffling, and once they are drawn we will be donating this amount also,” Kim said.

Friend Jodie Holledge voiced her admiration for her friend.

“I doubt Kim will fully understand how her fundraising money will help others as being diagnosed is a big enough blow, so knowing that there are organisations available to help you with some of the details, is one less burden,” Jodie said.

Kim’s plaits have been donated to the Leukemia Foundation to make wigs and the supporter is already planning her next fundraising event too.

“It feels so good to give, and it never ceases to amaze me the generosity of the country folk,” Kim said.
