by GEORGIA SPENCE Bungle Rumble is making a comeback on Saturday, 2 5 N ove m b e r a n d t h e billing is certain to get the co m m u n it y o ut of th e i r camp chairs and onto the dance floor.

Fresh from their performance at the Mundi Mundi Bash last weekend, Ch o co l a te Sta r f i s h h a s been announced as the event’s headline act.

Launching onto the Australian music scene in the early 1990s, the band

has earned two ‘Top 10’ albums and six ‘Top 50’ singles, and continue to tour regularly.

The band is known for their cover of Carly Simon’s, “You’re So Vain,” bringing a rock ‘n roll twist, to the original hit.

While 2023 Golden Guita r a wa rd nom i nee, Andy Penkow prepares for his event debut, last year’s crowd favourites, Ballz N All, will make a welcome return to the stage.

Indigenous artists such as Dubbo-based Millie Mills, and Isaac Compton, who recently performed at the Coonabarabran NAIDOC Ball.

Former Coonabarabran resident, Rebel Black, now based at Lightning Ridge, will also perform.

Yarn, Support, Connect - Coonabarabran Suicide Prevention Network, was successful in obtaining a $50,000 grant under Create NSW Creative Koori to help part-fund the 2023 Bungle Rumble.

Event coordinator, Kodi B ra d y sa i d t h e f u n d i n g wo u l d l e a d to a l a rg e r focus on Indigenous culture throughout the event.

“Both local and other Fi rst Nations per fo r mers are gathering at the event for a mini Corroboree,” Mr Brady said.

“There will be a continuous fire at the front of the stage and a dance circle.

“It is going to be a really special sight to see and experience.”

Although similar to the

“O u r ma i n a i m i s to break down social isolation through the oppor tunity to attend a live event,” he said.

“We do not do this to make money,” Mr Brady said.

“Anything we do make, will help us start off for next year,” Mr Brady said.

Gates will open at 4pm on Saturday, 25 November with festivities continuing into the night.

Andy Penkow releases “Aussie Rain” filmclip Coonabarabran is being put on the map as country musician, Andy Penkow, launches his new single and filmclip “Aussie Rain”.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Released on Friday, 11 August, Aussie Rain pa i nts a pictu re of Coonabarabran’s rich history and culture, and a town that is close to the artist’s heart.

O n a ra i ny d ay i n July, Mr Penkow was in Coonabarabran filming a music video for the song.

Both the lyrics and music video highlight the town landmarks such as the Castlereagh River, the local pub, a bit of Aussie rain and more.

last weekend, performing at the Imperial Hotel on Sunday, 20 August and sharing his appreciation for the town.

It was at the Imperial Hotel where Mr Penkow first gained inspiration for his new single.

“There was something so special and unique about it. T he people, the land, the history, the night-time stars, it really moved me,” said Mr Penkow.

Hav i ng travel led across Australia, through many country towns, M r Pen kow wanted to thank those

who had embraced his musical career through the song.

His efforts will hopefully inspire others to visit regional towns, to discover the wonders for themselves.

Mr Penkow has over 100 shows booked this year, including the music a nd ma rket festiva l , Bungle Rumble, to be held in Coonabarabran o n S at u r d ay, 2 5 November.

Aussie Rain has been commended throughout the town for its warmth and identifies the town’s community spirit.

A long walk for awareness Walking to raise awareness and share his support for those injured by the COVID-19 vaccine is Victorian man, Matthew Lawson, who pit-stopped in Coonabarabran last week.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Making the trek from Melbourne to Brisbane on foot takes commitment, however, one Victorian man, Matthew Lawson, is taking on the challenge.

Mr Lawson is walking to raise awareness for Jab Injuries Australia, an organisation sharing support and guidance for those injured by the COVID-19 vaccinations.

T ravel l i ng nor th along the Newell Highway, M r Lawson has stopped in many regional towns, including Coonabarabran, to s pr e ad wo r d o n t he contentious issue.

Walking 30 kilometres a day, he hopes his efforts spread awa reness t o the cause, without the l imitations of on l i ne

censorship.

“We want those that a re i nju red t o k now they aren’t alone and that there is help to get compensation,” Mr Lawson said.

Mr Lawson said he chose to suppor t Jab Injuries Australia as their information had been heavily censored, leaving many injured parties struggling to gain compensation.

He believes a lack of support from politicians a nd ph a r m a c eut i c a l companies means the public is left without access to professional support. “ T he compensation paperwork is over 300 pages long and requires legal help, which many injured can’t afford,” he said.

Mr Lawson said he had friends and family members directly affected by the vaccine and was able to understand the challenges and upset it could cause.

During his roadside journey, Mr Lawson has found himself meeting many like-minded people, who have offered up their homes, and more, for him to rest and recover.

“The trip has allowed us to meet many amazing people who have offered u s p l a c e s t o s t a y, nou r ish i ng fo od a nd grateful hugs,” he said.

The aim of the walk is t o br i ng va r ious c ommu n it y st or ies to light and for those suffering in silence to feel they can speak up.

Sundays are for singing A new gospel choir has been formed in Coonabarabran by Phil and Catherine Snitch, encompassing all talents amongst the joyful genre.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Singing is a passion, aiding in the expression of an individual’s heart.

T his rings true for P h i l a n d C at h e r i n e Sn it ch, who recently started a gospel choir at the Country Gardens Motel.

Led by Mr Snitch, the choir focuses on old time gospel a nd welcomes anyone with a passion for singing, no matter

the skill.

The aim of the choir was to fulfil Mr Snitch’s desire to share joyful music with like-minded people. “ He was missing getting together with people to do what he loves – and gospel is such uplifting music,” Mrs Snitch said.

The choir hope to practice enough t o p e r f o r m at l o c a l events a nd a re keen

to pa r ticipate in the Christmas Carols at the end of the year.

Before mov ing to Coonabarabran, both Mr and Mrs Snitch lived in Bathurst.

For them, music has always a passion, having owned a private musictu ition busi ness a nd taught music programs at various schools.

In his 20s, Mr Snitch taught pr ivate music lessons.

He then worked as a h igh scho ol spor ts t eacher a nd g rew t o love sharing his musical pa ssion , be c om i ng a music teacher as well.

Now in his 60s, his love for sharing music has not wavered.

He now volunteers his time at Coonabarabran High School, offering guidance to HSC music students and has started a beginner concert band.

After making a living

through music, Mr and Mrs Snitch now want to have fun and grant opportunities to others through the choir. “ There are no expectations. Most people don’t feel confident, but would like to give it a go,” Mrs Snitch said. “ We g ive them the opportunity and then they discover they can sing.

IN FOCUS: CHOCOLATE INFLATION

A rocky road There is an expression – “don’t bite off more than you can chew”...unless it is chocolate! These wise words may not be so wise as the price of cocoa and sugar are set to soar.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Chocolate lovers be warned – the treasured indulgence is set to rise.

M a n u fa ct u re r s a re s t r u g g l i n g to m a tc h the costs of cocoa and sugar, which are likely to remain at high levels in the coming year.

As the cost of manufacturing rises, so do retail prices.

Rabobank has analysed data on the r i si ng costs of cocoa and found trading prices have risen 27 per cent within the past year.

The rise is due to poor growing conditions within major production regions.

This includes places such as the Ivory Coast,

where 4 0 per cent of global cocoa production is accounted for.

A ssociate analyst from Rabo-Research, Pia Piggott said the world was heading into its third year of rising chocolate costs.

“The manufacturers have had ve r y wet conditions and flooding, which has been causing rotting and disease in the trees,” Mrs Piggott said.

She notes that poor production volumes are also the result of lower fertiliser available.

Chocolate may not be the only sweet in which prices are set to get sticky.

Sugar has become a common ingredient in most packaged foods.

The Intercontinental

E xc h a n g e ( I C E ) s a i d s u g a r i s fo u n d i n 6 0 per cent of products, meaning if the price of sugar rises, so does the cost of many other foods.

Rabobank has found prices of raw sugar has increased by 20 per cent within the last year.

The chance of a severe El Niño could have manufactures struggling to meet demand within the next few months.

“El Niño could possibly tip the scales back into global deficit, with more demand than supply,” Mrs Piggott said.

I n t h e p a s t y e a r, there has been clear signs of inflation across supermarkets.

The chocolate manufactu res have

been careful to offset cost pressures, according to Rabobank.

“Inflation in the snack category is running at a high, double-digit rate,” Mrs Piggott said.

Rabobank has been watch i ng consume r response to rising confectionary prices and has found a decrease in impulse buying, with consumers more likely to indulge at home – not on the go.

T h e r i s e i n confectionary costs will likely not stop consumers from treating themselves.

It is clear we no longer l i ve i n M a ya n t i m e s , w h e re co co a b e a n s were the currency, worth more than gold – and it grew on trees!

Yardings held firm in the cattle market and tightened slightly in the sheep market.

Indicators generally eased over the week, with condition and finish continuing to be varied.

The ABS has released its quarterly slaughter and production statistics.

Cattle Yardings held f irm this week at 51,712 head, 0.5 per cent below last week.

NSW yardings were 2 ,048 lower than the week before at 23,097, while yard ings in Q ue en s l a nd r o s e by 1,464 to 19,137 head and yardings in Victoria, SA, WA and Tasmania were relatively flat.

While there was rain in southern Australia, conditions have been dry in Queensland over the week except for small amounts along the coast between Townsville and Cairns.

P rices generally

eased over the week.

Queensland remained firmer than the rest of the country, but still tightened.

T he feeder steer indicator eased 8¢ to 307¢/kg live weight (lwt), while in NSW, Victoria, SA and WA the indicator eased 14¢ to 299¢/kg lwt.

Lambs and sheep Total yardings tightened this week in lambs to 159,303 and rose in sheep to 59,620 for a total yarding of 218,923 head.

Finish and condition continue to be varied, though in several ma rkets the number of well-finished lines

improved and increases in the number of new season lambs on offer was noted in several reports.

Indicators generally eased, with the heavy lamb indicator tightening by 6¢ to 466¢/ kg carcase weight (cwt) Bucking the trend was the mutton indicator, as a large showing of wellpresented Merino ewes in Wagga contributed to a 5¢ increase in the indicator week-on-week to finish at 246¢/kg cwt.

Weekly slaughter Cattle slaughter rose by 1,482 head week-onweek to 123,195 head.

This was primarily due

to a 2,483 head increase in cattle slaughter in WA, the highest weekly figure in WA since early February.

L amb and sheep slaughter rose to 5,959 head week-on-week to 583,282 head.

T his was due to increased sheep numbers, which rose by 28,903 to 161,747 head.

Lamb slaughter fell by 22,944 to 421,535 head, as decreases in Victoria (-10,818), NSW (-23,057) and SA (-30,110) were partially compensated by a 34,958 increase in WA. © Meat & Livestock Australia Limited, 2023

Baradine secures key health worker accommodation A project is underway in Baradine to build essential accommodation for frontline hospital staff.

by LIZ CUTTS The construction of th ree, one-bed room u n it s on- s it e at t he town’s Multi-Purpose Health Services centre is being funded through the Federal Government $ 3 5 . 3 m i l l ion Mu ltiPurpose Services (MPS) program.

Federal Member for Parkes, Mark Coulton said he welcomes the commencement of the building works in Baradine. “ I mp r o v e m e n t s t o infrastructure are so impor ta nt for ou r regions, as they are part of the solution when it comes to shortages in many sectors, including he a lth ,” M r C ou lt on said. “ I ’m s o ple a s ed t o see the Australian G o v e r n m e n t c ont r i but i n g t o t h i s vital accommodation in places like Baradine. “ It is my hope that these units will boost ac cess t o hea lthca re for people in Baradine

and surrounding areas by enabling more hea lthca re workers to stay on site where they’re needed.”

A spokesperson for the Western NSW Local Health District said that healthcare staff work busy sh i f ts both day and night, so ensuring t hey h ave a c c e s s t o accommodation which me et s t hei r sp e c i f ic needs is important. “ T hese u n its w i l l a l s o help t o at t r ac t doctors and healthcare workers to our region, with the district recognising that a lack of affordable, accessible ac c ommod ation ca n prevent new and visiting hea lth workers f r om coming to work at rural health services.

“The accommodation u n its a re equ ipped with all the necessities including kitchenettes, comfortable living areas, and ensuite bathrooms. “ T hey a r e lo c at e d on the M P S g rounds and have been designed with safety, security,

liveability, and comfort front of mind. “ T his project is part of a $7.9 million i nve s t ment t o bu i ld key health worker accommodation across the Western NSW Local Health District. “ It w i l l enable the distr ict to supply accommodation for doctors, nurses and other he a lt h pr ofe s sion a l s when working in the region.”

Shameful protest I believe in the right of all people to protest.

I believe in people demonstrating against social and political wrongs. But...

My van, which was being driven by a friend, was recently subject to significant damage.

It is undrivable and it’s currently on the side of the road waiting to be towed. It is a write-off and those in the car could have been killed.

I went to take photographs of the car and found someone had stuck posters over the back windows saying – ‘Jab injuries awareness walk. Melbourne to Brisbane’.

I was so angry, I tore them off before I realised I should have photographed them in situ.

Who are these Jab Awareness mob? They obviously didn’t care whether or not someone may have died in the wreck.

There is Police tape on the van and the signs were put over the Police tape, so whoever put the signs up, knew the accident was significant enough for the Police to be involved.

G a r ner is a British Methodist m i n ist er who ser ved t he l a st 15 ye a r s of his active ministry as superintendent and CEO of Wesley Mission, based in Sydney.

We s ley M i s s ion i s a m aj o r pr o v id e r o f community care with 2500 staff, and has a total of 1800 members in its many congregations.

It is unique in holding together a strong sense of Christian mission as well as a commitment to ministry alongside the many who are struggling i n t h e c o m m u n i t y, such as those who are homeless.

In addition to being head of Wesley Mission, R e v. G a r n e r w a s engaged in a great deal of broadcasting, on both rad io a nd telev ision.

Some will remember his weekly Sunday morning “ Wesley I mpac t ” program on Channel 9.

During 25 years in

the British Methodist Church, R ev. Ga rner ser ved i n Ply mouth , Darlington and L landud no, in Nor th Wales, before becoming chair of district in his home area, which covered a large portion of t he nor t h-we st of England.

In 2005, Rev. Garner,

together with his wife Carol, responded to the call to take up the major appointment in Sydney.

On retirement from full-time ministry in 2021, he has continued his preaching ministry and has of fered to serve in churches and communities around the country, but particularly

in NSW. Rev. Garner and Mrs Garner are delighted to be in Coonabarabran and have begun meeting the community.

People are invited to join the congregation at 9.30 am on the next four Sundays, when Keith will be preaching.

VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC DAY: 15 AUGUST 2023

Baradine commemorates The Baradine community marked the 78th anniversary of the end of the Second World War Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day with a tribute service.

by school students and local residents at the t ow n memor i a l wa l l on Tuesday, 15 August for the commemorative event.

The widows of former local servicemen shared their memories of the peace declaration and the community reaction to the news. They said

t h at r e c ol le c t ion s of t h e s o ld i e r s c o m i n g home, espe cia l ly the prisoners of war, are still firmly etched in their minds.

Baradine school students and members of the RSL sub-branch attended the VP Day commemoration event at the memorial wall.

Rae Tassell points out the commemorative plaque to her husband, Stan Tassell, who served in the Australian Airforce in WWII.

Centenarian Hilton Pickette remembers WWII Hilton Noel Pickette turns 100 on 14 October 2023 and as Victory in the Pacific day was commemorated on Tuesday, 15 August, he was happy to tell his World War ll story for the occasion.

Hilton was born in Coonabarabran to Thomas and Lyle Louisa Pickette and lived at Purlewaugh, where he went to school until about age 13, when he left to work on the family farm, “Merriview”.

A t a g e 19 he wa s living at Balgowlah NSW with his sister and he enlisted into the army on 9 October 1942, giving his age as 20. He initially went into the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) and then re-enlisted into the Australian Imperial Force (AIF).

H i lt on’s i n it i a l training was done at Bullring before he went to North Head on Manly Beach, where he was trained to use 9.2mm guns.

Training to go to Papua New Guinea was also done at Botany Bay and at South Head before he was entrained from Sydney to Cairns. There he trained for another th ree weeks before being sent over to Port Moresby and then up to Finschhafen, where he manned 25-pounder guns, and was where the Battle of Finschhafen took place.

He also did a stint as a Signalman, running phone lines, but mainly was a gunner for his time overseas.

Hilton served most of his time in the Paga Coast Guard Battery.

His unit was called the Paga “O Heavy” Battery, as they manned the large guns.

T he s e g u n s h ad a barrel length of 25 feet (7.6 metres) and could fire a 100-pound (45kg) shell of Lyddite (HE), a rmou r-pierci ng or shrapnel a distance of 18,0 0 0 yards (16km).

This was suitable for defending against enemy ships coming through Basilisk Passage.

Pa g a B at t e r y wa s clo sed dow n i n Ju ly 194 4 . T he g unners (generally) embarked Port Moresby on 1 July 1944 per Boschfontein for Brisbane, arriving 5 July. Many of the men joined the mobile “Letter” Batteries until war’s end.

Hilton was placed with “O” Heavy Battery and left for Australia on 4 July 1944.

Hilton recalled that w ith the t or rentia l afternoon rains every day, the place was wet a nd b ogg y a nd t hey seemed to be spending all their time trying to get the bogged guns out of the mud. The unit was there for some time before they were sent to North Buna, where the Japanese had invaded in 1942, and established it as a base. The unit was there mainly to mop up after the Japanese had fled.

A fter the Japanese surrender, the “ Manunda” was dispatched to Singapore to repatriate ex-POWs and civilian internees who had been imprisoned in Changi Prison. She also sailed to Labuan, in Borneo, to pick up ex-POWs and civilian i nt er nees f r om B atu Lintang camp.

T he sh ip sa i led t o Kure in Japan, where the unit set up the first 130th General Hospital for occupation troops.

Kure was a submarine base for the Japanese but it is owned by Australia.

They were there for six weeks and then sailed back to Australia and Hilton was discharged f r om t he a r my on 5 August 1946, aged 24, having served five years

in the army.

H i lt on moved back t o P u r l e w au g h a n d then, with very little to his name, he went working, doing what he could until he had made enough money to buy a small property of 100 acres. That started him on his long career as a farmer, selling top-class Shorthorn cattle that were always well sought after at the sales.

He married and he owned six properties in

all including “Ellerslie” in Kenebri, “Westholme” in Collarenebri, a nd “ M e r r i v i e w ” i n Purlewaugh.

Hilton has still been on his farm until recently, when a fa l l put h im in hospital for a time and then in Cooinda for rehabilitation. He has had a long and fruitful career and looks back with some pride at his achievements as a farmer and stock producer.

Eileen Andrews celebrated her 100th birthday last weekend with family members at a morning tea held at Merryula, Cooinda, and was delighted to receive a congratulations message from King Charles.

Do you have a nickname? I used to get Spruce as a kid by my uncle, which I hated, and my husband calls me Baldrick, affectionately.

What is Australia like compared to England? There is more space, so room for more horses and a much better climate. English winters are cold, wet and dark.

H o w d i d yo u co m e t o l i ve i n Coonabarabran? Years ago, after uni, my friend and I went on a gap year and worked with Ambrose for three months in Coona. I met my husband down at the pub and through tennis. We went travelling together in the back of his ute. We then moved to the UK for a few years and came back in 2007 to live in Coona.

What’s the most interesting job you’ve ever had? I am a primary school teacher now, so I see interesting stuff there. I have had some really random jobs. I worked in a chocolate factory, which turned me off chocolate, we went banana farming – all sorts of random things.

You’ve had a stressful day – what’s your way of winding down? It sounds odd, but we try to practice gratitude at tea time. We like to share two things we are grateful for. Wine and horses always work too.

Do you have an interesting fact to share? Guinea pigs and humans are the only animals that cannot make their own Vitamin C.

How would your friends and family d e s c r i b e yo u i n t h r e e wo r d s?

Organised at work, driven at work and the world’s worst procrastinator at home.

Do you have a hidden talent? Or what is something people might not know about you? I can stand on my head, with my knees on my elbows.

If you could pick a decade to visit on a time machine what would it be?

I would go forward into the future.

Maybe 2050, to see what we have done with the environment and to see if we have improved as humans.

If you could have anyone around for dinner (dead or alive) who would it be? Definitely, the Queen – to talk horses of course! And to get the goss on the royal family.

And what would you cook them?

Roast lamb – but it would have to be one of our own.

When was the last time you had a really good laugh? The kids and my husband make me laugh. The kids do very silly things and my husband thinks he is very funny.

What’s something you’re looking forward to? My parents are coming to visit for Christmas from the UK. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given? We have a motto at work and it is ‘team work makes the dream work’.

There was a positive ending to a state-level alert involving the dissapearance of a man in the Pilliga Forest, north of Coonabarabran last week.

O n T h u r s d a y, 17 August 2023, officers attached to the Orana M i d -We s t e r n P o l i c e Distr ict appealed for information regarding the disappearance of a man near Coonabarabran.

It was reported t h at t he 37-ye a r - old man was last seen at approximately 3pm on Thursday after entering

bushland off the Newell Highway, 40 kilometres north of Coonabarabran.

Pol ice a nd fam i ly members held serious concerns for the missing man, with nighttime temperatu res plummetting.

O n S a t u r d a y, 1 9 Aug ust at around 2 . 3 0 pm, the sea r ch came to a close when PolAir located the man in bushland, and helped

guide ground crews to the man’s location.

The man was suffering from exposure and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to Coonabarabran Health Service for treatment.

Police extended their thanks to media and the community for their assistance during the 48 hour operation.

The Tour de Gorge is back for 2023 and is set to be a fantastic family affair when cyclists come together to tackle the Pilliga Forest track on Saturday, 2 September.

After COVID and rain postponements over the last few years, National Pa rks a nd Wi ld l i fe Service is confident this year’s Tour de Gorge bike ride through the Pilliga will be the best yet.

The Tour de Gorge is a celebration of the remote and rugged beauty found within the Pilliga Forest.

The ride also welcomes in spring, with riders getting up close with the expansive wildflower display that the region is famous for.

T he Tour de Gorge has been held annually since 2013, apart from a few disruptions, and ever y year there has been a steady increase of participants wanting to get out there and enjoy the day.

With either a 45km or a 18km circuit, the whole fami ly ca n enjoy the adventurous day out. The ride allows participants to visit and experience p a r t s o f t he P i l l i g a Fo r e s t t h at a r e n o t usually open for cycling.

Be sure to stop off at the refuelling stations and grab yourself some lollies and fresh fruit to

keep yourself energised!

WEATHER WATCH Dry conditions have now really set in with a vengeance across most of the nation during August. The only places which received above-average rainfalls were Innisfail with 142mms, Cairns with 46mms and Cooktown with 43mms, which may be due to above normal sea-surface temperatures in the Timor Sea. Few places along the south-west corner of Western Australia also have had aboveaverage rain this month.

Carnarvon, this year up to 20 August, has had only 53.4mms. This is its driest on record this year to this point. Other very dry such periods did occur previously in 1938, 2006, 2014 and 2017.

Maximum temperatures up to 20 August have been three or four degrees above normal over most of inland NSW and outback Queensland.

T h e m e a n - m a x i m u m te m p e r a t u r e i n Coonabarabran was 20 degrees. The warmest Augusts in Coonabarabran were in 1885, 1888, 1895, 1928, 1977 and 1982 and 2009.

The Warrego and Maranoa region in Qld has been notably warmer than usual, the mean maximum temperatures have been up to four degrees above the August normal; warmest Augusts being in 1895, 1914, 1928, 1946, 1982 and 2009.

The cit y of Melbourne is now heading towards its driest-ever July and August period in over 165 years, with only 40mms to date.

The driest periods were in 1902, 1928, 1948 and 1982.

Su m m i n g u p, we a re fa ci n g ve r y d r y conditions and much warmer conditions for the rest of this year in our region and continuing well into January next year. The fire danger will be dangerously high at many districts. Quite a few places will receive aboveaverage rainfalls in either December, January and early February, with thunderstorm activity.

by GEORGIA SPENCE The local club has recently upg raded its courtesy bus, purchasing an eight-seater Hyundai iMax. For the past two years, volunteers have operated a shuttle on Friday evenings,

providing patrons with a safe ride to and from the club.

There a re hopes to expand the ser vice in the coming months and bui ld on the number of volunteers who drive.

The courtesy bus is free, h o w e v e r, a g o l d c o i n

donation is welcomed to assist with costs of running the vehicle.

One of the directors of the club and shuttle bus volunteer, Kevin Sharp, said the bus provided access to the venue, while minimising risks associated with driving under the influence.

He notes other volunteers were happy with the new upgrade.

“It is more comfortable to travel in, easier to maintain and operate,” Mr Sharp said.

“The bus will also be used more in summer for days on the green.”

Currently, the Golf Club is in the process of organising some new, family-friendly entertainment.

“We hope to offer music once a month and other activities that utilise the space and create a family orientated environment,” Mr Sharp said.

The bus is not only used for the Golf Club, offering local function holders with a means of transport for events.

Soccer news A very exciting soccer final was held last Thursday at school between England and Brazil. After a thrilling penalty shootout, England claimed victory in the primary match, while Italy was our successful infants’ team.

Played in breezy conditions at Dunedoo’s Robertson Oval, the Cobar Roosters had managed to come back from an eight-nil deficit early in proceedings in their qualifying semi-final against the Dunedoo Swans to claw their way back on the scoreboard to have it reading eight-all at the break, courtesy of a converted try and then a penalty goal right on the half-time siren.

T heir momentum carried them to a 16-8 lead in the second half before the Swans’ centre, Villiame Turuva, scored h is th i rd t r y for the afternoon to make it 16 to 14 – and very much game on.

Tim Hillam’s second try for the Roosters gave them a bit of breathing space, extending their lead out to eight, at 22 to 14.

With tensions running h i g h i n b ot h c a mp s , the game in the final quarter of the match saw a Cobar player binned and a Dunedoo player sent off, with 15 minutes remaining following a dust up. When the binned Rooster rejoined the fray with just five to go, his place in the foul house was quickly taken up by two more Roosters, which present ed the Swa ns with a great opportunity t o br e ac h t he C o ba r defensive l i ne. But , despite Dunedoo’s best efforts to do just that, the Roosters managed to hold their line intact to secure the victory and a shot at hosting the 2023 grand final if they can beat Gulgong next Saturday.

The day at Dunedoo began on a sombre and emotional note, with a minute’s silence being observed in respect of the untimely passing of Coonabarabran Unicorn player, Kyle Turner, the day before.

With h is nu mber 11 jersey retired, the Unicorns’ reserve grade went on to record a strong win over the Roosters, 42 to 6.

T he R o o s t e r s a l s o t a s t e d de fe at i n t he league tag game against the Narromine Jets, but certainly made a game of it, coming back from being down 28-8 at half time to be trailing 28-20 early in the second half before the Jets regrouped and went on to win 38 to 20.

elimination semif inal between the Narromine Jets and the Coonabarabran Unicorns kicked off.

The Unicorns got away to a great start and led 10 - 6 midway th rough the first half before the Jets levelled it in the 26th minute. From that point on the Narromine took control of the game with their flying winger, “Freddy” Joji, dazzling the crowd , a nd the Unicorn defence, with his stunning footwork and pace which saw him race in for four tries and play a major role in the final score line that had his team come away with a big 50 points to 2 0 victory.

The lower grades saw the Gilgandra Panthers reserve grade side score a 22 to 20 win over the Gulgong Terriers in extra time and the reigning le ag ue t ag pr em ier s , the Baradine Magpies remain in the semi-finals with a 24 to 10 win over Coonamble.

Next weekend will see the major semi-finals be played at Gulgong on Saturday and the minor sem is at D u nedo o on Sunday.

By the time the Cobar Roosters’ first-grade side get home after their major semi-final game against the Gulgong Terriers, they will have travelled some 460 0 kilometres t o pl ay i n t hei r l a st six games – a distance g reat er tha n d r iv i ng from Sydney to Perth (and 600 kilometres of the way back)!

Obviously, they will be relishing the prospect of securing the home game that will be forthcoming from their match against the Terriers, but will it be the g ra nd f i na l on 9 September or the preliminary final on 2 September?

To g et t o ho s t t he grand final is the big prize on offer for both the Roosters and the Terriers this Saturday. The big question is, “Can the Roosters be the first team to defeat the Terriers in season 2023?”

The two times that the teams have met thus far have seen Gulgong come away with a 34 to 20 win at Cobar in round nine and winning again 36 to 24 at Gulgong just a couple of weeks ago in the final competition round.

The winning margins o f 14 a n d 1 2 w o u l d indicate that the Roosters have been competitive in both games and perhaps, with a bit of luck, they could upset the Terriers, albeit a difficult task to do so at Gulgong’s Billy Dunn Oval.

T he other g rades on S at u r d ay pr e s ent as being ver y highquality affairs, with a local derby clash in the reserve grade between the Baradine Magpies and Coonaba rabran Unicorns starting proceedings, followed by the absolute blockbuster league-tag game between the undefeated Dunedoo Swans and the Na r r om i ne Jets, who have only lost the one game this year – that being to the Swans with a 16 to 12 score line.

On Sunday at Dunedoo, the Dunedoo Swans and the Narromine Jets will

again clash, this time in the sudden-death first grade semi-final.

The Swans won 38 to 30 in their only meeting so far this year, but they have r u n i nt o i nju r y pr oblem s l at e i n t he season and w i l l have to dig deep to hold the Jets out.

The other grades will see the Cobar Roosters figure in both games, taking on Gilgandra in reserve grade and the B a rad i ne M ag pies i n league tag.

Redbacks sting lingers Doreen makes in Kookas grand final it a trifecta FROM BACK PAGE But, as he passed the ball, a Wellington player deliberately knocked the ball down and was sent to the sin bin.

Automatically, in any other game, a penalty try is awarded in this situation.

Yet, the Kookas only got a penalty. Unfortunately, Darcy Clifton missed the penalty kick, so what should have been seven points became zero.

Not long after, John Milgate charged down a clear ing kick from Wellington on their line for Sam Wilson to score for the Kookas. The referee was prepared to award the try but the linesman, 25 metres from the action, claimed he found a foot mark on the dead ball line and claimed that must have belonged to John and, as a consequence, the try was disallowed.

Whether this was correct or not, Central We s t R u g b y p u t t h e referee in a very difficult position, as he had previously played for Wellington, lives in the town and is new to refereeing; because in these two controversial situations it was hard

for our players and supporters not to question his decision making.

C e n t r a l We s t s h o u l d have appointed a neutral referee and linesman; with a final penalty count of 15-4 against the Kookas it did make Wellington’s victory smell a lot.

With several more m i sse d p e na l ty k i c k s things were not going to plan for the Kookas, until Jarrod Michael scored a good winger’s try down the eastern touch line. Darcy Clifton then handed over the kicking duties to Tom Redden, who also missed the long-range conversion.

Wellington then scored right on half time to go to the sheds 10-8 down.

This score line was never going to be enough, particularly when Tom Redden knocked the ball backwards from a kick off to Harry Willoughby, after we had just slotted a penalty goal to retake the lead. Referee Baxter, who was 20 metres upfield, and with a huge uproar from the home crowd, ruled a knockon – a crucial decision which gave Wellington a scrum feed 18 metres out and from this they quickly

scored a converted try.

Alli Beale, the Wellington fullback, then took total control of the game in the second half, launching huge torpedo kicks that swirled around in the wind and sun, putting all sorts of pressure on our wings and fullback. With the constant trickle of penalties, he eventually slotted five penalties goals and a conversion to shut out the Kookaburras.

Harry Willoughby scored for the Kookas in the 78th minute, meaning Coonabarabran scored three tries to two, but only kicked one goal to Beale’s six.

So, a disappointing end to a very successful season made the mood somewhat subdued that night, but we have so much hope for the future with many young players continuing to develop and older ones happy to hang around for another season – with all of them loving the club atmosphere we have created over recent years.

I know the loss is still too raw to even think about next year, but if you recall in last week’s column I wrote about

Dave Sanson’s 1969 team being defeated in this is exact situation. He told me that after the initial disappointment they all got back together again wiser and stronger and won the premierships in 1970 and 1972.

I can’t finish off without recognising all the players who wore black ar m bands for the game in memory of Kyle Turner, who is first cousin of our captain, Dave Sulter. Kyle was one of the greatest rugby league players to come out of Coonabarabran in recent times; he was a gentle soul with so much humility, and was adored by all the students at Coonabarabran Public School where he taught.

LADIES’ GOLF Doreen Searle scored a trifecta on Wednesday, 16 Aug ust , w ith her thi rd w in over th ree consecutive weeks, returning a score of 37 points and pipping the post from Jan Keppie and Kerrie Ward, both scoring 36 points in the stableford event.

Doreen is still enjoying the run on the fairways – even her duff shots give a reasonable result.

Shock loss for Kookas This year the Coonabarabran Kookas Rugby Club missed the opportunity to become the first team in their history to be crowned undefeated premiers following last Saturday’s shock 27-18 loss to the Wellington Redbacks.

RUGBY UNION I n w hat othe r w i se was a wonder ful day, with bright sunshine, a large crowd enjoying a carnival-like atmosphere and plenty of returning old boys reacquainting themselves, the stage was set for a fairy-tale finish for the season.

But somehow the Kookas we re ve r y tentative ea r ly on, even l et t i n g th e b a l l bounce off the kick-off to allow Wellington to regain their own kick.

Th i s set the stage fo r the rest of the match, where Coonabarabran just could not get flowing and dominate possession and territory to shut Wellington out.

A strong breeze blew all afternoon and the Kookas chose to run with it, hoping to develop a big enough lead by half time so Wellington couldn’t catch them in the second half.

Tim McManus scored a good team try after 15 minutes. Now, with some confidence, try-scoring opportunities developed for the Kookas – first by Sam Wilson, who set up Tom Redden close to the line.

Narrabri’s Nosh Food and Drink Festival The highly anticipated Nosh Food and Drink Festival returns this weekend with festival organisers putting the finishing touches on all elements of this year’s event.

This is the first Nosh Narrabri Festival and Nosh Long Lunch since 2019 and the committee could not be more excited to deliver this year’s festival to the community.

Nosh president Kate Kahl is pleased with how the event preparations are progressing.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the community to Nosh 2023,” she said.

“We have 30 exhibitors attending who will feature food and beverages ranging from sauces, nuts, cheese, salami, honey, baked goods, liquors, wines, and gin that can be sampled or taken home.

“There are also plenty of exhibitors who will be serving food and drinks throughout the day including smoked barbecue treats, kebabs, donuts, cold and frozen

beverages, to your favourite hot brewed coffee and tea.”

Exhibitors for this year’s festival are mostly local to the region, with some exhibitors from the Hunter Valley, Riverina, Northern Rivers, and the Gold Coast also attending.

“We are pleased to have a variety of food and drink artisans showcasing their produce and products,” Kate said.

“The diversity of local and regional exhibitors compliments what Nosh is all about – celebrating local food and drink producers while being able to taste and purchase these products in a relaxed and fun festival-inspired environment.”

“The committee has also been working on the three big Nosh competitions which all make a return in 2023 – the BBQ cookoff, Great Australian Cheesecake competition and the Australian Regional Homebrew championships.

“We have received several entries for both the cheesecake and

homebrew competitions, with judging of these competitions occurring live on stage during the festival.”

The BBQ cook off has received entries from local teams who will be battling it out behind the barbecue grills from 12.30pm.

With only 45 minutes to prepare, cook and plate their dishes, contestants will be put under the ultimate Nosh pressure test where the 2023 champions will be decided by a panel of judges.

To make it a little more interesting, contestants are able to bring along a secret condiment to complement their dish, however, must also somehow incorporate a mystery product which will be provided to them by the Nosh organisers.

This mystery product (chosen earlier that day from exhibitor’s stalls) will only be revealed to them at the start of their cooking time, making them think on their feet!

George the Farmer is also attending to keep the little ones entertained with two shows during the festival.

If relaxing and simply spending time enjoying the company of family and friends is more to your fancy, the new Nosh location behind number 2 and 3 ovals on Tibbereena Street means there’s plenty of shade and green grass to set up a picnic (or utilize one of many seating options available) to enjoy the atmosphere of the day.

The new location also allows for better ease of access due to being able to utilize the current concrete pathway, with the old Nosh site instead being used as an additional car park for the event.

Nosh Food and Drink Festival is on Saturday, August 26 from 10.30am to 5pm, on the shared pathway beside the Narrabri Creek along Tibbereena Street.

The festival is a free, family event.

Countdown is on for Wee Waa Show

The countdown is on with the Wee Waa Show weekend kicking off on Friday, August 25.

It’s one of the district’s most popular events and this year’s theme is ‘Together is Better’, celebrating the power of community and the wonderful things that can be achieved when people work together.

Attendees will find old

favourites and new attractions at the showground, from beautiful flower and photo exhibits in the pavilion, the hot contested baking contests to the baby show, pet show and Wee Waa’s Got Talent competition – there’s something for everyone.

One of the highlights is the announcement of the Young Woman of the Year winners on Friday night.

youth development program has undergone a name change recently to better reflect the spirit of the event in honouring young rural women and to ensure the relevance of the competition well into the future.

Former Wee Waa Young Woman of the Year and steward Georgia Dickinson said she has received “some great feedback from the judges regarding the diversity and individuality of each of the girls”.

“They all interviewed very well and should all be very proud of themselves for their accomplishments and dedication to their community.

“While the Young Woman Competition has seen smaller entrant numbers in recent years both in Wee Waa and the Ag Shows of surrounding areas, the competition is a beneficial opportunity for so many young rural women.

“It builds self-esteem, teaches public speaking skills, personal presentation skills and interview processes.

“It also allows them to form awareness about and express perspectives on local and national issues, and is such a great opportunity for networking both in their local community and beyond.

“It’s great to have initiatives like this available in communities like

Wee Waa and I’m always very proud of the girls who step up each year to take part in the competition.

This year’s junior and senior entrants include: Josie Galagher (Junior) Josie is a Wee Waa local and current Year 12 student at Wee Waa High School. Josie has a strong interest in agriculture and animal science, and is also an accomplished horse rider, representing Pony Club NSW Zone 5 at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

She has been involved in local groups and events such as the Wee Waa Pony Club and the Show for a number of years.

Josie has always taken up opportunities for community involvement through school and she aims to study Animal Science at UNE Armidale after finishing Year 12.

Josie aims to gain valuable life skills out of entering the Young Woman Competition such as interviewing, public speaking and presentation skills.

Emma Holmes (Senior) Emma is a Wee Waa local and is currently studying a Bachelor of Agriculture remotely through .

Emma works at local company Crop Capsules and has a strong interest in the cotton industry.

Emma plans to become an agronomist after completing her degree, and wants to return to Wee Waa in hopes that she can promote further education in the agricultural field, particularly amongst young women.

Emma has been involved in many areas of the community, helping with flood relief packages, school fetes and attending events such as ANZAC Day marches and Clean Up Australia Day. Emma believes entering the Young Woman Competition will give her an opportunity to become more involved with her local show and refine her skills in interviewing, presentation, public speaking and networking.

Hayley Jenkins (Junior) Hayley is a Year 10 student at Wee Waa High School and is preparing to undertake a school based traineeship with TAFE through All Pets Veterinary Narrabri.

Alongside her studies, Hayley enjoys playing netball and football and supports the Narrabri Blue Boars. Hayley’s commitment extends to helping out on her family’s farm and to community events where she lends a hand working with a local catering company.

Hayley has been involved with the show through school and has participated in the Wee Waa High School Cattle Show Team.

By running in the Young Woman Competition, Hayley would like to connect more with her local community and develop valuable personal skills.

Montana Winter (Senior) Completing her studies at Wee Waa High School in 2022, Montana currently works in the local earthmoving industry with RSA Contractors.

Studying for her Certificate III in Civil Construction Plant Operations externally through TAFE, Montana hopes to eventually take on her family’s earthmoving business, and has a passion for encouraging young women to take interest in the earthmoving and civil construction industry.

Beyond her professional endeavours, Montana extends her impact into her community.

As well as being an active volunteer with Riding Develops Ability and local nursing homes, Montana has worked at Wee Waa Nurruby OOSH and often babysits for families in the community.

Montana sees the Young Woman Competition as a great opportunity to build self-confidence, develop and refine her personal skills, and believes the competition is a great initiative to encourage community involvement.

DUBBO ZOO THE PLACE TO BE THIS FATHER’S DAY Australian country music star Andy Penkow is set to headline Zoocoustics 2023, as Taronga Western Plains Zoo hosts the ultimate, free Father’s Day live music event next month.

The Independent Country Music Award-winning singersongwriter is no stranger to the Dubbo region, but this will be his first time playing in a zoo – and he can’t wait.

“It’s definitely an exciting opportunity to be performing at such an iconic place like Dubbo Zoo,” Andy said.

“I think it would be a lovely opportunity for families to get together in a relaxed environment and beautiful location and celebrate Father’s Day with some good music and the opportunity to explore the Zoo!”

Zoocoustics 2023 is being held as part of Dubbo Regional Council’s annual DREAM Festival, and will feature local artists in addition to Andy’s eclectic style.

“I love playing in Dubbo. I have been performing regularly in and around the region for over five years and I feel a strong connection with that part of Australia.

“I also feel like there are a lot of friendly, welcoming locals that enjoy my music.”

“I’m influenced by a lot of different music, which is prominent in my sound,” he said.

The iconic, in-zoo music event will be held on the lawn of the Savannah Function Centre, overlooking the picturesque Savannah Lake and Primate Islands on Sunday 3 September from 12pm-3pm.

“I would describe myself as an alternative country/ Americana artist. My shows are quite intimate and engaging with lots of storytelling.

Sticky Date Meusli Bars Preparation 15 min | Cooking 35 min | Makes 12 pieces INGREDIENTS ¼ cup brown sugar ½ cup honey 1 tsp vanilla extract 60g butter 1½ cups rolled oats 1 cup rice bubbles ⅓ cup shredded coconut 350g fresh Medjool dates, deseeded and chopped

STEP 3 Combine oats, rice bubbles, coconut and dates in a large bowl. Pour over the melted butter mixture and stir until combined. Spoon into prepared pan and smooth top. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden and crisp. Cool in pan. Cut into rectangles and serve.

Fresh dates are a source of vitamin C, which contributes to the normal functioning of the body’s immune system.

STEP 1 1 Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C. Grease and line the base and sides of a 19cm x 29cm slice pan with baking paper.

STEP 2 Combine brown sugar, honey, vanilla and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until butter melts and sugar dissolves. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 2 minutes or until slightly thickened. Remove from heat.

Provide some folate, a B vitamin that is needed for normal formation of blood cells.

A source of potassium which may help balance the effects of the sodium from salt in the diet.
