Nine for nine: no election for Warrumbungle Shire Like a number of locations across the state, residents across Warrumbungle Shire will not be heading to the polls on 14 September for the 2024 NSW Local Government elections.

With the number of nominations received for Warrumbungle Shire equalling the number of available s e at s , t h e e l e ct i o n h a s b e e n declared uncontested.

This outcome means that all nine nominated candidates are automatically elected to serve as the new councillors for the Shire.

The newly elected councillors are: • Zoe Holcombe (Coonabarabran) • Ray Lewis (Neilrex) • Debra Bell (Mendooran) • Kathy Rindfleish (Coolah) • Dale Hogden (Dunedoo) • Kodi Brady (Coonabarabran) • Denis Todd (Baradine) • Naomi Taylor (Coonabarabran) • Jason Newton (Coonabarabran).

This Council represents a mix of experienced hands and new perspectives.

Returning to their roles are Zoe Holcombe, Kathy Rindfleish, Dale Hogden, Kodi Brady, Denis Todd, and Jason Newton.

Ray Lewis, a former Warrumbungle Shire Councillor, also returns, while newcomers Debra Bell and Naomi Taylor bring fresh energy and ideas to the table.

The new Council is noteworthy for its strong representation of women, with four women among the nine elected councillors.

The diverse backgrounds and exper iences of the councillors e n s u r e b r o a d r e p r e s e nta t i o n across the Shire’s communities, from Coonabarabran to Neilrex, Mendooran to Coolah, Dunedoo,

and Baradine.

Outgoing mayor, Cr Ambrose Doolan, along w ith Cr Aniel lo Iannuzzi and Cr Carlton Kopke, did not contest this election, marking the end of an era for the Shire’s leadership.

A s t h e n ew te a m s te p s u p, residents will be watching closely to see how this blend of continuity and change will shape the future of Warrumbungle Shire.

The uncontested election in Warrumbungle is part of a broader trend across NSW, with several other councils, including Berrigan, Cobar, and Cowra, also declaring uncontested elections.

Meanwhile, Ber r igan, Cow ra and Junee Councils and Lachlan – Ward E have received fewer candidate nominations than the number of councillors required for their councils, and a by-election will be held to fill those vacancies at a later date.

While this means residents in these areas won’t be voting in September, it also signals a smooth transition of leadership without the unpredictability of a contested election.

“Time marches on” – VP and Vietnam Veterans Day commemoration Victory in the Pacific Day and Vietnam Veterans’ Day was commemorated in Coonabarabran last Thursday, 15 August.

At 11am, the C o on aba rabra n R S L Sub-Branch, returned service personnel, school r epr e s ent at ive s a nd c ommu n ity members assembled at the Memor ia l Sw immi ng Pool to commemorate Victory in the Pacific Day a nd Vietnam Veterans Day in a brief ceremony.

“Time marches on and this year marks 79 years since Japan capitulated to unconditionally sur render,” said C o onaba rabra n Sub Branch president, Kevin Barrington, who shared his thoughts on VP and Vietnam Veterans Day. “ My recent reading suggests planned invasions of the Japanese main islands for 1946 by the Americans would be horrendous in terms of human cost. Japanese pr ide wa s at s t a ke , and the lessons from other islands invaded by the Allies en-route to the main Japanese islands was that the Japanese were prepared to sacrifice 90 per cent of

their force. “ Hence the ‘ bombs’ – the only time atomic bombs have been used in war. “ It appea rs that after the second bomb on Nagasaki it was the Emperor who directed the surrender against the will of his military men.

“WWII victory seems a two-stage event, even here in Australia, as f irstly there was the Victory in Europe on 8 M ay t h at br ou g ht a level of rel ief a nd happiness for citizens of our country. But the f i na l release of that tension that comes with being at war was that which occurred when Japan surrendered on 15 August 1945.

“By the end of World Wa r I I , 7 2 m i l l i o n people across the world h ad l o s t t hei r l ive s as the consequence of war. Sources vary in the figures, Australia mou r ns the loss of 39,000 sailors, soldiers and ai rmen /women i n w a r, wh i l e 8 0 0 0

person nel fought of f an enemy of variously repor ted streng th of 2000 plus. Australia lost 18 personnel that day, the enemy many times

that number.

Rotary bookshop’s final page to benefit charities Coonabarabran’s Rotary Bookshop recently shut its doors after 20 years, and multiple buildings, but with the help of the community – and their own positive thinking – rotarians and volunteers been able to clear the vast majority of their thousands of books, with the remainder going towards good causes.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY It’s a credit to the local Rotary branch and the organisers of the bookshop that they’ve kept such a vibrant and cherished part of the community alive for so long.

What started as a market stall at the Bunny Bazaar in 2005 quickly became a valued fund-raiser, and that is a role it will continue to play after the keys were handed over last Monday.

Rotarian Col Welsh, who helped spearhead the Rotary Bookshop, said he had a strong sense of sorrowful pride as he stood in the middle of a shelf-less store, and emphasised his gratitude for the community’s ongoing support through this change.

Mr Welsh explained that the dispersal of the remainder of the resources would be “mostly charitable” – as books and shelves alike will be spread around.

Half of the books are going with ‘Outback Book Distribution’ where they will be dispersed amongst remote communities and farmers.

With the aid of Roach’s Hardware, the other half will go to a Gilgandra disposables group, where the paper will be recycled and sold to raise money for the centre.

During the final weeks of operation, some books were sent to Cooinda and to local hospitals. Others were sent to CWA Craft Group, and ADRA, where they will be sold.

The history group and gardening groups also benefited from generous donations, with the wood from the shelves going to the Men’s Shed.

However, it’s not entirely the end of the line for the Rotary Bookshop, as they will continue to stock the ‘little library’ located in Dalgarno Street, adjacent to the Coonabarabran Times office.

Zac’s artistic journey flourishes in town Zac Craig is the cover star of the current edition of wattle magazine, a widelytravelled artist exhibiting the pinnacle of modern art – and now lives right here in Coonabarabran.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY When Zac was approached to be a par t of ‘wattle’, he didn’t seem to hesitate, despite bei ng a selfdescribed introvert.

With the di rection of Emi ly Rouse and Kait Britton, two photo shoots were organised, the first in Neilson Park, with the iconic autumn fol iage fo r m i ng the backd rop fo r what would ultimately become the cover photo.

The second par t of the shoot was i n h i s s t u d i o, w h i c h h e described as “usually a pretty private place for me, but with one or two people it’s okay.”

Zac sa i d h e a wa re that for a lot of people a studio is not a “super familiar” place, so he showed Emily around a n d ex p l a i n e d w h a t he did, and his creative process.

Ove ra l l, he sa id, “ I w a s r e a l l y h a p py to contr ibute, and be a

par t of a publication that is really beautiful for the community.”

Street art T h e r e’s n o d o u b t t h at Za c i s a va l u e d community member – he’s the ar tist behind the 3D dog on the footpath on Dalgarno Street, in front of Space Galler y, with plans for more murals in the works.

O r ig i na l l y f rom the area, Zac has moved around a bit and spent time abroad, but has now settled in Coona, where he and his pa r tner a re planning to renovate their house.

“She’s an architect,” he explained, “so we’ve got lots of dreams for our house – and it s h o u l d b e p ret t y f u n and quirky.”

When it comes to the appeal of the town, he explained that it was a lack of devel opment and natural char m, juxtaposed by a “real energy brewing,” that drew him in, and he’s now an active member

of the community and a par t of the ‘2357 Development Group’.

Between everything, he’s held an exhibition in Gosford, only a few d a y s a f t e r r et u r n i n g from a month-long trip to India.

H e co n f i r m e d t h at the exhibition was re a l l y we l l re ce i ve d, “an amazing show and the gallery was a great space.”

The exhibition was a par t of the ‘Regional Gallery Program’, which Zac is passionate about endorsing and growing into local areas.

He showcased a total o f 2 0 -2 5 p i e ce s a n d i s a l re a d y p re p a r i n g for his next exhibition, which w i l l be held in Newcastle next March.

G i ve n t h e m e d i u m Zac works with, these pieces a re not quick sketches; it’s not uncommon for his works to take years to complete.

For tunately for Zac, most major exhibitions a re t wo yea r s apa r t, allowing him enough ti me to com p l ete h i s intricate works.

“Some pieces won’t end up being in the show, others won’t end up being anything at all – you just keep the gems,” he explained.

With the end of COVID -19 lockdowns, Zac is excited about the prospect of travelling again. He looks forward to set tl i ng i n to his studio, spending a few months painting there befo re ex h i b it i n g, a s h e d i d i n G e r m a n y.

He may also have the opportunity for a solo exhibition in Barcelona.

Closer to home, Zac plans to focus on more commercial mural work while continuing to establ i sh hi mself and his partner in Coonabarabran.

One man’s trash is an artist’s treasure Along the newly-laid path at Neilson Park in Coonabarabran stands a steel sculpture – a vessel magnifying the fractures of life and hand crafted by local artist, Shannon Stone.

by GEORGIA SPENCE Growing up in Coonaba rab ran, M r Stone dreaded the idea of becoming a “boring human”, which fuelled his passion for transforming the mundane into something beautiful.

His work morphs inorganic elements and logical processes i nto o rgan ic pieces representative of nature and the Australian bush.

Mr Stone can magnify the intricate elements of nature th rough his welding skills. He can turn metal and recycled materials into an eye, a series of native bird feather s, o r a leaf s ke l e t o n , h o w eve r, his sculpture featured at Nei l son Pa r k i s an expression of an idea.

The three sculptures, made of corten steel, a re representative of intergenerational trauma and what that does over time.

When the idea is put into context of the history of the river, of those who have come and gone, and the Aboriginal mission that used to exist, the sculptures carr y a different weight.

If an environment or people suf fe r f rom a broken beginning, how does that magnify over time and what cracks remain?

Recog n it i o n i s o n e of the first steps to the h ea l i n g p roces s a n d the sculpture is just one pa r t to recogn i si ng the r ich histor y of Coonabarabran.

Some may view the piece through an Indigenous lens and

recall the days when th e i r a n ces to r s we re jailed for being on the river at night, while others may reflect on their own personal histories.

Regardless of per spective, a r t is often created to evoke emotion.

“This is one of the first p i eces I co n s t r ucted to represent an idea, opposed to an object, item, or thing. An idea in a third-dimensional context can be a challenge to construct,” Mr Stone said.

“I created these vessels to hold that space o f i nte r g e n e ra t i o n a l trauma. I’m not attached to the idea behind them.

It could be a family in a canoe, a magnification of time, or a celestial piece.”

Sculpting embodies the t i p of M r Stone’s talents, as he also delves into the realms of digital ar t, timber and stone carving, amongst other mediums.

Ear lier this year, Mr Stone held an exhibition at SPACE Gallery called ‘Home Again’.

The exhibition featured a selection of sculptures and ar t pieces which uti l ised an a r ray of materials such as vintage farm equipment, scrap timber and mixed media.

After spending 15 years on the coast of NSW with his partner, Mr Stone’s exhibition highlighted the return of everything coming home – his art, his materials and himself.

Grateful to be back in the bush, Mr Stone said it was more supportive to a creative headspace, due to the peace and slower-paced lifestyle.

“I believe an idea can be caught by the breeze.

Being back here brings more possibility of having ideas arise and the time to grab onto them,” Mr Stone said.

“I build things in my head for weeks, before I physically create – and I enjoy replicating nature.

“A s h u m a n s , w e have the option to pick something up and put it back down. To be able to pick something up, influence it and create so m eth i n g b ea ut i f u l, also enjoyed by others, is amazing.”

Just like an art work can have multiple perspectives and meanings, so does his connection to Coonaba rab ran and the bush.

Growing up, he was of ten i nto creative activities, whether it was drawing, sculpting or working with mud bricks.

Professionally, Mr Stone has been exhibiting for over five years and has been successful in his endeavours.

Currently, he has two pieces travelling with the Saltwater Freshwater Aboriginal Art Award and Contemporary Cultural Objects Exhibition and will exhibit at several galleries over the next 12 months.

M r Sto n e h a s w o n multiple awards including Artist in Residence for NSW 2022, Innovation in Sculpture for Sculpture on the Farm, Dungog NSW, and the Ivy Hill Gallery Award in Bermagui.

His sculptures at Neilson Park should remain as the generations pass through and create their own memories.

Rising star: Matilda hits the high notes Matilda Poole is a 17-year-old acoustic singer located in Mudgee, but her name is quickly becoming known to many, as she performs across the mid-west region, Sydney and Coonabarabran.

by ELEANOR RAPLEY Matilda has been passionate about singing since childhood, thanks to h e r g ra n d m ot h e r, who deeply influenced her love for musica nd encou raged her to pursue it.

E n ro l l ed i n tod d l e r music class when she was only three years old, Mati lda commenced piano lessons a few years later.

H o w e v e r, i t ’s o n l y b een i n th e l a s t f i ve years though that she’s picked up the g uita r and regular ly star ted performing.

In 2020, Matilda entered the Vocal Stars National Competition w h e re s h e s tood o ut a m o ng th o usa nd s of contestants, becoming one of only two to be offered the prestigious ‘Go ld Pe r fo r mance Package’.

“This package a l l owe d m e to wo r k with a number of music industr y professionals, and eventually led me to receive a call back from XOXO recording studio,” she said.

I t wa s n’t u nt i l t wo years later that Matilda began regularly gigging and per for ming in the area, including

in Coonabarabran, where she has a deep connection.

“My g ra n d p a re nt s, Pete r and Ba r ba ra Poole, owned a property in Purlewaugh where my Mum and aunt grew up, and my grandmother was a teacher at the high school for quite a while,” Matilda explained.

“M y m ot h e r, Petrina, and my a u nt b ot h a t te n d e d Coonabarabran High School, and were regularly involved with the pony club.

“I spent the first few years of my life in Coona, but even after moving I’ve always returned to Coona Pony Club. I love Coona, it just has a sense of home to me no matter how far away from it I am.”

Matilda said her mother was her biggest supporter.

“She attends almost every single gig with me, and has encouraged me to put my name and voice out there, despite my resistance in a lot of cases.

“Many of my gigs result in very late nights and as I live rurally (an hour out of town), the travel can b e co m e ex h a u s t i n g , but Mum has been my roadie (and “mumager”)

since day one and never complained or turned down a single trip.”

These gigs have resulted in some huge highlights for Matilda, and she vividly remembers her fi rst ‘pinch me’ moment.

“It was one of the very first gigs I’d played in Mudgee in 2022. I had played a Taylo r Sw if t so n g a n d s ud d e n l y I had a whole group of people in front of me d a n ci n g to it w h i ch, for me starting out as a ‘newbie’ performer, was just mind blowing!”

She also descr ibed the thrill of performing for the 2 023 Mudgee Christmas Carols – walking on stage to see thousands of people, as well as winning the 2023 Mid-West Music Quest.

Swiftie

Taylor Swift has been a huge musical inspiration fo r Mati lda since the beginning. “ E ve r y t h i n g a b o u t her work is incredibly intr icate, from her lyricism, use of instruments as well as her performances.

“I attended her Eras Tour in Februar y, and it was an amazing exper ience, but it also really helped me understand crowd

engagement, her live vocal techniques and the way she manages vocally performing and visually per forming at the same time.

“I’ve been a Swiftie since her second album was released in 20 08, a n d s h e’s d e f i n i t e l y been one of my biggest inspirations to become a singer/musician in the first place.”

F o r n o w, M a t i l d a i s a Ye a r 12 s t u d e nt preparing for her trial exams, and the HSC in October, so it’s naturally been a chal lenge to balance performing and studying, which has left her gig schedule, “pretty bare until November, so I can properly focus on completing my HSC.” Next year, she has her sights set on university, a i m i ng to become a re g i s te re d n e o - n ata l n u r s e. A s a b a c k u p, s h e’s c o n s i d e r i n g a career as an agricultural teacher. However, she emphasised that music a n d p e r fo r m i n g w i l l remain a part of her life.

Music wise, her dreams have been to perform in front of large crowds, and to produce her own music for others to hear. “ Pe r s o n a l l y, I t h i n k I could continue

expanding with the first goal forever, and that ever y show could be bigge r than the last.

I’m cu r rent l y p ut t i n g to g et h e r my f i r s t E P,

which hopefully will be released in the coming year, and I’m so excited for that. “ I’ve a l so deci ded to enter the Toyota Star

M a ke r i n Ta m wo r t h (part of the Tamworth Country Music Festival), so potentially becoming a par t of that is an absolute dream.”

Funds revitalise local buildings As we edge closer to spring, local community groups in Coonabarabran are gaining a new lease of life, with renovation projects being undertaken at both the Presbyterian Church and CWA Hall.

In a bid to increase accessibility, the ramp at the rea r of the Presbyterian Church, located on the corner of John and Cassilis Street, is in the process of bei ng removed by heavy machinery.

A new slab will be poured before backfilling the ground, eliminating the need for a ramp.

Coonabarabran P resby terian Church m i n i s t er, K r i s t i a n Har tberg said the project had been funded pu rely out of the generosity of church go ers a nd , weather permitting, the concrete

would be ready to be laid this week.

M r H a r t b e r g s a id the original ramp was constructed more than a decade ago when they realised how it could benefit the community, however, it needed to be replaced.

T he hope is that the new access will be more accommodating and support the church community for years to come.

Down the road at the Coonabarabran Country Women’s A sso ciation (CWA) Hall, a new paint job, roof and windows have been scheduled for refresh.

CWA president, Fay Chapman said when they had initially applied for a Clubgrants Category 3 infrastructure grant through the NSW Government they were going to focus just on the painting and complete the roof later down the t r a c k , h o we v e r, t he painting alone did not r e a c h t he m i n i mu m spend amount.

T he bu i ld i ng was or ig i na l ly opened i n 1957 and, as such, is in need of some serious maintenance work.

T he interior of the building has been improved slowly over time through various

g r a nt s t h at a l lowe d for pa inting and the installation of and airconditioning.

Vivian Evans, a memb er of t he 2 3 57 D e v e l o pm e nt G r o up who assisted in wr iting the g rant application alongside

Mrs Chapman, said the CWA Hall was used by a variety of organisations and people.

“This grant will bring this community asset to a longer-term future,” Mrs Evans said.

The external painting has commenced at the

rear of the building and on the storeroom and toilet buildings, and is a blue/grey colour.

Mrs Chapman said she had a chuckle when they pulled back the current fading, cracked paint, only to find blue underneath.

“One of the painters was sure he remembered the building as blue as wel l,” M rs Chapma n said.

Despite the fact that the building has been cream for many years, she said that others had commented the same.

Coonabarabran’s CWA Hall is being spruced up with a new paint job, roof and windows.

It was a sad day for many Coonabarabran residents, and for members of the Rotary Club in particular, when the Rotary Bookshop closed at the end of July.

The lack of another satisfactory venue was the main problem, but we are very grateful to our landlord, Roach’s Hardware, for the four years of their support since 2020. We would also like to sincerely thank the Coonabarabran Times for their backing with advertising over the many years we have operated.

The bookshop was one of the two principal ways we have raised money which we use for community projects and to support other volunteer groups. Our catering trailer is the other way we raise money. So, fortunately, we have been very busy in recent weeks using it to help out at a couple of football events and at the Public School athletics carnival.

A very special occasion took place recently when Kalyna Sparks was inducted into the club. How good it is to welcome new members, especially younger people who bring fresh ideas, and energy? Architect, Kalyna will also bring her design and internet technology skills to the team, which from time to time may well save some of us older members who are not very ‘techy’.

Rotary had a presence

at the Hearty Welcome to new residents on Sunday in the Town Hall. It was a great opportunity to speak about what Rotary aims to achieve, and to make contact with old and new residents. Brochures and pamphlets outlined some of the programs that Rotary has undertaken in Coonabarabran over the years.

There are several projects that are ongoing.

One is the ‘Barbie for the Blokes’ project. Monthly get togethers have provided opportunities for fellows to talk about whatever concerned them in a friendly supportive atmosphere.

Last Friday 20-plus men met at the Men’s Shed, which hopefully will be the ongoing venue for these functions.

Be on the lookout for advertisements pinpointing when the next will be scheduled.

Another project is the Seed Library, spearheaded by Rotarian, Jaimee Brent and friends.

Their first get together was held in the CWA Hall last week, when guidance was provided for people interested in saving vegetable and flower seeds. The opening of the library, which will be situated in the cafe section of The Lighthouse, will be officially opened during the Spring Festival in September, to be known as ‘Bloomin’ Birds’.

Meetings in the weeks ahead promise to be very interesting – guest speaker Lizzie Bennetts will be talking about seed gathering next

week, then there will be a partners’ night with a special dinner and a visit from the Community Choir. Later in the month we will be a meeting on a Sunday out at Pilliga Pottery for something quite different.

Meanwhile, we are preparing an extra special dinner for all the volunteers who have helped with the Bookshop over the many years of its existence.

No doubt it will be a nostalgic evening, but full of appreciation for the assistance provided by so many people. We could never have run the shop without them.

Time flies: CPS buries new capsule to be uncovered in 2044 Last year, Coonabarabran Public School dug up a time capsule that had been buried in 1995 and last week, as part of Public Education Week, they buried a new one, with meaningful and light-hearted contributions from staff and students alike placed into an esky to be uncovered in 2044.

for many members of the community in 2023, when the Coonabarabran Public School unear thed a time capsule from 1995.

Originally, the capsule was i ntended to be opened 2020, however, it was delayed due to COVID. As the unveiling received such positive reception from the c o m m u n i t y, w h i c h had g athe red at the ceremony to reminisce on past days, the decision was made to continue the tradition, with an esky provided as the designated 2024 capsule.

Across 37 staf f and approximately 20 0 students at the school, no one was left out.

Classes compiled ‘ c l a s s b o o k s ’, w i t h students writing profiles on themselves that were added to the capsule, along with class photos and books curated by staff.

Also included in the artefacts were a COVID

mask, swab-test kit, and a mouse trap; to mark what, for any student, were now unforgettable experiences – COVID-19 and the mouse plague.

A school polo shi r t, athletic carnival ribbons, and various badges for prefects, captains, and special achievements were included. A pencil case filled with standard w r iting mater ial s was also enclosed, with the under standing that students of 204 4 may not be using pens and pencils.

An edition of the Coonabarabran Times and wattle magazine were added, along with lists detailing the cost of living, such as the price of a house in Coona or a treat from the bakery, and a list of the students’ favorite songs.

Several students were selected to place the items i nside the esk y, which was then wrapped in a garbage bag, and placed in a plastic tub to protect it from water damage.

to accommodate the waterproof measures, a n d w e r e g i ve n t h e honour of placing the capsule into the ground.

The capsule will be buried for 20 years in the Years 3 -6 playground, m a r ked by a m a r b l e plaque in the same fashion as the first one.

“They were clapping and cheering, but can’t quite understand that we now have to wait 20 years,” she said with a laugh.

Free premier screening of ‘tRAKa-tRAKn’ Coonabarabran will host the premier screening of the new short film ‘tRAKatRAKn’, by Gamilaraary artist, r e a, this Friday evening at the Town Hall.

Her experimental new media arts practice has evolved from traditional phot og raphy t o what is now a research-led practice, which engages with and in new media technologies. r e a’s a r t uti l ises a tra nsd iscipl i na r y approach, exploring ideas that emerge from the archive – a space that is filled with cultural connections to ancestors and country, activating an Indigenous lens that then explores history and colonialism, identity, gender and queer politics. r e a said ‘tR A K atR A K n’ is not a do cumenta r y, it is a story of a young man who returns to his maternal grand-mother’s country.

“Over the last two-anda-half years I have been making a three-screen video work which relates to the suicide of young men in my community,” she explained. “ My v id e o pr o j e c t started when my nephew,

then aged 10, came home from school and told me that a mate of his had killed himself over the weekend.

“He then went on to tell me that he and his mates ‘talked’ about suicide pretty much every day. “ This distressing conversation lef t me reeling and reflective and it was then that I decided to make ‘tRAKatRAKn’.

Coonabarabran Public As the spring weather peeps around the clouds and brings flowers to our days, the non-stop hectic pace of activity continues at CPS. The Zoomobile visited K-2 on Wednesday last week, with Ryan and his six special guests.

We met Berry the blue tongued lizard, Bumpy the shingle-back, Monty the python, Winston the magnificent tree frog, Lybos the Chaco Tortoise and a very cute ringtailed possum.

The students all learnt about the animals unique features and adaptations and were fascinated with lots of interesting facts.

Then, on Thursday, Mrs Mel Evans and Mrs Walker travelled to Narrabri with two Stage 2 teams to play in the Super Netball Schools Cup. Both teams played six games of netball against teams from Narrabri, Wee Waa and Burren Junction schools.

The weather was warm and the competition challenged our teams on the day, however, Coona Blue and Coona Yellow showed great skills and wonderful sportsmanship.

Coona Blue came second in the competition, winning five games and tying one, and now travel to Tamworth in the next round near the end of term.

A f t e r t h e s h o w, ever yone enjoyed a delicious morning tea prepared by Yuluwirri's talented cook, Sarah. The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly the special ‘Fish That Wanted to Fly’ cake, a delightful t r e at t h at p er fe c t ly complemented the day’s theme.

Back at preschool, the children continued discussing the show and were inspired to create their own puppets and perform their own stories.

Tooraweenah Public Education Week / Grandparent’s Day Last Thursday, more than 70 grandparents, parents, and special guests descended on Tooraweenah for the annual Grandparent’s Day, enjoying a morning of open classrooms and performances. We are very thankful to have such strong family support for our students here at Tooraweenah.

Our visitors were able to see our students learning in action, with the K/1 class sharing a ‘Maths Warm-up’ and the 2/3/5 class showing a ‘Spelling Warm-up’.

On Monday, 5 August, the senior preschoolers f r om Yu luw i r r i a nd the R obertson Street preschoolers embarked on a magical adventure to the Coonabarabran Town Hall. Together w ith thei r educat ors and a wonderful group of volunteers, including parents, grandparents, a nd C o o n a b a r a br a n High School students, the children enjoyed a delightful morning outing.

Joining students from local schools, Family Day Care groups and community members, the preschool children were captivated by ‘The Fish Who Wanted to Fly’, with its inspiring story of resilience and courage.

The performance by Little Wing Puppets was a truly magical experience, f i l led w ith laughter,

at Culcairn Public School and has been an integral part of the team here at Tooraweenah for the last five years.

Small Schools Athletic Carnival A great day of competition and sportsmanship was on show for the Small Schools’ Athletics Carnival at Dubbo last

Friday. We had five students compete in the primary carnival and 10 students participate in the tabloids.

The following students have qualified to District Athletics based on their times and distances: Bonnie Alison – 100m; Hamish Jenkin – 100m, 200m, 800m; Sam Trickey – 100m, 200m.

This year, the Science Week theme was ‘Species Survival – More Than Just Sustainability.

Our Year 6 students proposed a STEM day for the whole school, proposing that students make something to assist with sustainability.

Students were divided into mixed-aged groups and challenged with the task of making a bird feeder for native birds in the Baradine region. The design had to hold the weight of a black cockatoo (870g), withstand a strong breeze and have aesthetic and practical appeal.

The day commenced with a visit to the Pilliga D i s c over y C ent r e i n Baradine where rangers,

birds and their threats.

Damage caused to a roller door at the Coonabarabran Scout Hall during a recent malicious damage incident.

Man injured by falling tree at Dunedoo Around 10am, on Sunday, 18 August, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was tasked by NSW Ambulance to assist a man who had been injured by a falling tree on a property at Dunedoo.

Paramedics and the helicopter’s critical care medical team treated a man in his 30s for multiple injuries before he was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital.

WEATHER WATCH The first half of August has been very dry over most of Victoria.

In north-east Victoria, Benalla, with only 2.2mms, and Albury, with only 1.4mms, both recorded their driest first half of August since 1944.

Wangaratta, with only 5.4mms, recorded its driest first half of August since 1994, while Rutherglen had its driest such period since 1948.

To date, meanmaximum temperatures have been two degrees above normal for August and is likely to be very close to the record warm August of 2007, when we then had a very warm dry September and October in Victoria and NSW. This was followed by heavy rain and thunderstorms in

November and December 2007 and also in January 2008, with temperatures still above normal.

It has also been very dry in the Riverina, with only 1.4mms to date at Hay and 1.6mms at Deniliquin, while Wilcannia has had only 1.8mms, the third driest since 1914.

Further north in our region, the rainfalls exceeded the August average at Dubbo, Coonamble, Moree, Narrabri, Gunnedah and Tamworth. The rainfall to date at Coonabarabran was 49.8mms, and will exceed the August average when an active low pressure, now crossing Western Australia, will reach our region later this week.

Very heavy, out-ofseason rain fell along

the coast from Ingham to Coffs Harbour during the past few days.

Townsville recorded its wettest August day since 1998; Rockhampton, with 71.6mms, recorded its wettest August day since 1988; Evans Heads, with 157mms, recorded its wettest-ever August day – the previous wettest August day receiving 44mms in 2007.

A most unseasonable tropical deluge of 112.4mms in six hours hit Willis Island, 60kms east of Cairns. This was the heaviest August rainfall since 1988.

It has continued to be notably warmer than normal at Cocos Keeling Island for the eighth successive month.

Every single month this year has recorded the highest temperature on record – a feat which I have never seen happen at any climatic station.

Currently, the warmest year on record was in 1998 when the annual mean maximum was 29.8 degrees. This year will be above 30 degrees for sure.

Gunnedah Gala success The Coonabarabran Galaxy Football Club had an impressive showing at the 2024 Junior Gala Day in Gunnedah on Sunday, 18 August.

T h e c l u b’ s y o u n g athletes demonstrated their skills and sportsmanship in a series of matches.

T h e 5/6’s tea m per formed admi rably t h ro u g h o u t t h e d a y, earning an equal s e co n d - p l a ce f i n i s h , while the 8s had an exceptional run, advancing all the way

to the final. In a closely contested match, they narrowly missed out on victory, going down 1-0.

Despite the loss, thei r jou r ney to the f i n a l h i g h l i g hte d t h e team’s resilience and commitment to the game.

Everyone loves a par, and it seems Zoe liked it more as she was the winner with plus 3, another 80 off the stick.

Ball winners were K Christoff plus 2, C Munns plus 1, S Agalidis and E Gardiner square.

On 17 August a stableford was played and the winner was K Christoff, who had 32 points, beating M Resch

and S Morrissey on a count back. D Stevenson had 31 and S Jones scored 30 – all won a ball.

This weekend is a stableford and coming up quickly is the championships. Start practising, as there are great sponsors looking after us with the daily winners.

So, if you don’t want to do three of four rounds of championships, please come and support the daily competitions.

Roosters rule over Roos The Cobar Roosters became the first team to defeat the Coolah Kangaroos in season 2024 when they won what was a high-standard major semi final that was played at Dunedoo’s Robertson Oval on Saturday in front of a bumper crowd.

CASTLEREAGH LEAGUE In what was an eleventh-hour decision, t he K a nga r o o s wer e dealt a blow before the game even kicked off when the Coolah ground was deemed unsuitable for play, and any home ground advantage that they would have had was forfeited, with the s em i ’s h av i n g t o b e transferred to Dunedoo.

However, the change of venue seemed not to bother the Coolah side, and they raced out to a 12 to nil leaders, with Chanse Burgess going over twice for two converted tries mid-way through the first half – and they seemed to be doing it easy But it was to be the Roosters who went to the half-time break as 16-12 leaders after their w i nger, Jack Brow n, was able to ground a we l l -pl a c e d g r u bb e r f rom h is ho oker, Thomas Plater, in the 23rd minute. This was followed not long after by centre, Fraser Talu, leaping high to latch onto a pin-point cross field kick to edge the Chooks to within two points of the ‘Roos, with the scoreboard reading 12 to 10 at that point.

Talu was in again on the cusp of half time after a nice pass from f r o nt r owe r, G e r a ld Mackay put him in a gap and, with the conversion successful, the ‘ R oos went to the sheds facing a four-point deficit.

With the game f low i ng f r om end t o end, both sides were called upon to defend thei r l i ne st outly on a number of occasions and it wasn’t until the 24th minute into the second stanza that the scoreboard attendant was called to duty when Coolah’s hard-running centre, Josh Charles, was able to crash over for a converted try and the ‘Roos had regained the lead,18 to 16.

charged his way over for what was a converted try and Cobar was back in front, 22 to 18.

The final tense minutes of the match had the large and vocal c r owd on t hei r fe et , but there was to be no addition to either score and the Roosters had not only won the game, but also the right to host the 2024 grand final on 31 August.

Physie students dazzle at Interclub competitions Members of the Coonabarabran Physical Culture Club recently showcased their skill at two major interclub competitions, held in Bathurst and Tamworth. The competitions, which took place on 3-4 August and 17-18 August, respectively, were a brilliant showcase of what “physie” is all about.

Fo r those unfami l ia r, physie is a uniquely Australian sport that has been empowering girls and women for over a century.

Combining elements of ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance, physie routines are set to music and designed to promote flexibility, strength, coordination, and rhythm.

But it’s not all serious business, physie is also about having fun, making friends, and building confidence.

Under the guidance of dedicated instructors, the Coonabarabran Club, which boasts approximately 50 members aged from three to 70, has been diligently preparing for interclub events since the beginning of the year.

The Club offers weekly lessons, with additional sessions during the third term.

Their training routine includes stretches, strength training, cardio and dance rehearsals, with a dash of fun activities for the younger members.

In Bathurst, 20 members of the club competed, while Tamworth saw an impressive turnout of 25 local participants.

These competitions were particularly significant, with the Tamworth Physical Cu lt u re Cl u b ce l eb rat i n g it s 5 0 th anniversary in 2024.

Coonabarabran instructor, Carlie Watton said that for many of the girls and ladies, this was their first time competing on such a platform, making

their performances all the more special.

“All our members were beautiful,” Carlie said. “ B ot h i n te r c l u b s w e r e a g r e a t experience – it’s always so nice to see members of the Club coming together and cheering for each other.

“It also gives extended family members a chance to see the girls in action and what they have been practicing for!”

The experience of competing in these events has been invaluable for the Club members.

For the younger girls, it provided a glimpse into what they are preparing for and for many of the ladies, it was an empowering realisation of their own abilities.

Carlie expressed pride in the progress and camaraderie within the team, noting how these competitions have helped solidify their skills and confidence.

Looking ahead, the Club is now gearing up for the Zone team and individual events to be held in Tamworth in October.

While they have fewer teams competing this year, the excitement remains high, especially for the 5-6 year olds who will be representing the Club.

As a trainer, Carlie said the most rewarding part of her role was witnessing the progress of the students and the friendships they formed along the way.

“We are continuously proud of our girls and they never disappoint us,” she said.

More support for youth programs in Moree The state government’s investment in Moree to address crime, support young people and improve community safety is moving forward with the launch of $1 million in grants to deliver more after-hours activities.

The NSW Premier, Chris Minns was in Moree last week to announce the successful recipients of a new innovative small-grants program to support individuals and small businesses wanting to do more to support young people.

PCYC, Miyay Birray and SHAE Academy have been awarded additional funding to expand and improve after-hours activities for young people in Moree.

PCYC was awarded $314,000 to expand the U-Nites program to an additional two evenings each week, on Thursday and Saturday nights.

SHAE Academy was awarded $152,000 to deliver specialised youth programs on Friday and Saturday evening each week, with staff support until 2am.

Miyay Birray was awarded $282,000 to improve and expand StreetBeat so that it operates until 12am on Monday to Wednesday and until 2am on Thursday to Sunday evenings each week.

This will help to keep young people safe and off the streets late at night.

Mr Minns said the NSW government is backing young people in Moree and helping make the community safer.

“By providing more after-hours activities, we are helping more young people stay on the right track,” Mr Minns said.

“This kind of early intervention will help prevent crime and give young people more chances to succeed.”

Mayor Mark Johnson said it is great to see after much community consultation the NSW government’s Moree placed based initiatives coming to fruition.

“The after hours activities announced, whilst just one piece of a suite of future actions, will provide safer circumstances for our youth.

We are grateful to Premier Minns and his government for their ongoing support of our shire,” Cr Johnson said.

The CEO of the Moree Local Aboriginal Land Council, Steve McIntosh, expressed his gratitude to welcome the Premier back to Moree to discuss this important work.

“Since the NSW government announced this response in March, we’ve seen new energy and focus on our community,” Mr McIntosh said.

“The Moree Aboriginal Lands Council Land, along with Abcare, SHEA, Thiamali, Aboriginal Legal Services (ALS) Pius X, alongside our local police, share the same vision, knowing that the only way we can improve the lives of our young people, in a lasting way, is by empowering them and providing them with better opportunities.”

Future cotton leaders graduate The participants in the 2024 Australia Future Cotton Leaders Program (AFCLP) have formally graduated after an intense program featuring face-to-face forums, interactive online discussions, one-onone coaching and integration with industry activities.

This year a record 46 people applied for the prestigious opportunity resulting in the selection panel extending the participant number from 15 to 16, due to the quality of applicants.

The participants came from across the cotton supply chain including growers, consultants, merchants, and research and extension personnel and all undertook an individual project related to their area of interest, further developing their leadership skills in a real-life scenario.

Cotton Australia chief executive officer Adam Kay said he is excited about the potential of the 2024 participants to advance the already outstanding reputation of Australian cotton.

“Half of the 16 participants are growers, and they will be able to immediately apply what they have learned to their respective farms and share that knowledge with their local farming communities. Likewise, those graduates from other parts of the industry will also be able to positively impact their own areas of focus,” Mr Kay said.

“Pleasingly, the AFCLP is demonstrating its appeal to the best and brightest in the industry with the average age of the 2024 contingent sitting at 28.”

Graduate Georgie Flick, an agronomist from Goondiwindi, said the course was beneficial.

“I really improved my communication skills and how to be effective with varying personality types in the industry. What I gained will help my career because I will be better able to serve the local cotton community.”

Gunnedah cotton grower George McCalman said he enjoyed the focus on leadership.

“The course helped me to fully understand other parts of the industry but also how to be an effective leader, and if I think that will help me to be a better farmer and business operator.”

Mr Kay said previous AFCLP participants have moved into senior positions within Australian cotton, with many former graduates on boards including Cotton Australia, CRDC and CSD, as well as Cotton Grower Associations and other industry committees and projects.

Three people charged after investigation into drug supply in Moree area

Three people have been charged following an investigation into the supply of prohibited drugs in the Moree area.

In June 2024, officers attached to New England Police District established Strike Force Bullshark to investigate the supply of prohibited drugs in the Moree area.

Strike Force officers were supported by officers from General Duties, Mount Druitt Police Area Command, Western Region Regional Enforcement Squad and the High Risk Domestic Violence Offender Team, Operational Support Group (OSG), Public Order and Riot Squad (PORS), and the Dog Unit.

Shortly after 6am on Tuesday, August 12, strike force officers executed six search warrants at homes on Chester, Anne, Dover, and two on Edward Street, Moree, and a home on Chestnut Crescent, Bidwill.

A 30-year-old man was arrested at a home on Chestnut Crescent, Bidwell, and was taken to Mount Druitt Police Station.

He was charged with 90 counts of drug supply-related offences.

He was refused bail to appear at Mount Druitt Local Court on Wednesday, August 14.

During a search of a home on Chester Street, Moree, police arrested a 21-yearold man and he was taken to Moree Police Station. He was charged with recklessly deal with proceeds of crime under $5000, and supply prohibited drug over indictable and under commercial quantity.

He was refused bail and appeared at Moree Local Court on Tuesday, August 13, where he was given conditional bail to

appear at the same court on Monday, October 21.

A 49-year-old woman was arrested at a home on Edward Street, Moree, after she drank a substance from a bottle and attempted to destroy the label, during the search of the home.

The woman was taken to Moree Police Station and charged with hinder or resist police officer in the execution of duty, goods suspected stolen in/on premises (not m/v), and three counts of possess/attempt to, prescribed restricted substance.

She was given conditional bail to appear at Moree Local Court on Monday, September 30.

During the search of the homes, officers seized methylamphetamine, buprenorphine, cannabis, unauthorised prescription medication, drug paraphernalia, an electronic control device, ammunition, over $10,000 in cash, mobile phones, knuckle dusters, prohibited knives, and five unregistered motorbikes.

New England Police District, Officer in Charge, Detective Inspector Greg Ryan, said local police will continue to target prohibited drug supply.

“The harm caused by these prohibited substances to local communities cannot be understated,” he said.

“Police work with the community to proactively pursue anyone suspected of supplying prohibited drugs and disrupt the associated criminal activities which impact on the people of Moree,” Insp Ryan said.

Racing royalty farewells Moree

Fifteen candidates will vie to fill nine positions on Moree Plains Shire Council at September’s local government election.

The final ballot paper order was drawn last Thursday.

One group will run, with current deputy mayor Susannah Pearse as the lead candidate.

The other candidate in this group is current councillor Brooke Sauer.

Ungrouped candidates in drawn ballot order are Peter Mailler, Debra Williams, Stephen Ritchie, Frederick McGrady, Michael Ivanov, Wayne Tighe, Meryl Dillon, Domonique Hodgkinson, current councillor Mekayla Cochrane, current councillor Kelly James, Karen Munn, Kerry Cassells and Liz Taylor.

Mayor Mark Johnson announced previously he would not contest this election.

Sinclair, a fourth generation racehorse trainer, now trains privately near Murwillumbah for Sutton Park Racing supremo, Mark Sowerby.

It’s a move the trainer anticipated for quite some time, but a day at the Moree races without a Sinclair runner – or winner – won’t be the same for racegoers and owners.

“Moree has been fantastic to me and my family, and I’m very grateful for everything our hometown has done for us,” Sinclair said.

“I raised a family in Moree, built a home, and spent 40 years working for Telstra. Moree has been very good to me, but when Mark offered me the opportunity to train for him privately, I realised this was something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Sinclair has lost count of the winners he’s trained at the Moree track. He’s won three Moree Cups – Storm Boy, Upstart and Beacon – and 17 Boolooroo Cups at Moree picnics.

“There were a lot of good horses over the years for a lot of good people ... people who became very good friends, and are still very good friends,” he said



“In all the years I trained at Moree, I was also very lucky to have good staff. People like Tony McCosker and, more recently, Amee Hobday, who has looked after everything and kept the wheels turning after we made the move.

My dad, Phil, is always about to give a hand and his advice is invaluable.”

The time has now come for Sinclair to do what he’s wanted to do his entire life – train racehorses full-time.

“I’m really happy with our decision to move,” Sinclair said.

“I’ve been entrusted with a magnificent farm, with all the facilities a trainer could wish for, and a team of beautifully-bred horses.

“The layout here is amazing.

One of the big things I’ve noticed since moving, is travelling distances to the races. All the tracks are just around the corner. Grafton, Lismore and Ballina aren’t far away, and Murwillumbah is five minutes down the road. Even the Gold Coast and Brisbane are only two-and-a-half hours away,” he said.

Sinclair said the move to Sutton Park was a natural progression.

“My father, Phil, trained for Mark’s father, Neil, many years ago, so moving to Sutton Park was a natural step,” Sinclair smiled.

“Mark has got a good eye for a horse and has some lovely young horses coming through.”



Third generation Wee Waa grower Daniel Kahl appointed to Cotton Australia board Third generation Wee Waa grower Daniel Kahl is among four directors appointed to the board of Cotton Australia.

Cotton Australia held its annual general meeting at the recent Cotton Conference on the Gold Coast.

Three sitting directors were reappointed, with Mr Kahl being a new board member elected to the position.

The board welcomed Mr Kahl, a previous Nuffield Scholar whose grandfather Paul, a World War II fighter pilot, became a pioneer of cotton growing in Australia.

Mr Kahl’s grandfather moved his family from the US in 1960 and bought a farm at Wee Waa, where the family remains.

Paul and Jean Kahl along with Frank and Norma Hadley are credited with co-founding the modern Australian cotton industry in the Namoi Valley.

Daniel said his involvement in his local cotton grower association helped steer him to nominate for the board.

“I have been on local organisations and was looking for the next step in how to contribute to the industry,” Mr Kahl said.

“I threw my hat in the ring, but

“I think the board and management have done a great job, so I will be adopting a watching brief initially and contributing in any way I can.”

The Gunnedah Town Hall was dazzling for the celebration, with guests enjoying an evening of delicious food, entertainment as well as the presentation of awards.

Chamber president Ben Hennessy and vice president CJ Baldry officiated as co-hosts of the celebration.

Mr Hennessy said Gunnedah had last hosted an awards night in 2019 and that he was excited to see it return.

“This is all about celebrating our business community,” he said.

“In business, sometimes it can be a really lonely pursuit.

“This shines a spotlight on the amazing businesses in our community.”

Ms Baldry said exciting times are ahead for the chamber and the broader community.

Speaking of the awards, she said just under 200 nominations had been received.

Meta’s claims about news on Facebook revealed as fake news

Cotton grower Scott McCalman has spent two decades improving his crop health.

Cottoning on to how sustainability is helping growers Australia's cotton farmers have been told that they need to continue cultivating sustainable cropping systems to improve their bottom line.

The importance of eco-friendly practices was stressed to almost 3000 growers and industry stakeholders at the annual Australian cotton conference on the Gold Coast.

Attendee and NSW grower Scott McCalman, who has spent more than 20 years trying to reduce fertiliser and improve his crop health, told AAP a huge amount of trial and error has been involved.

“We looked at ways of coming up with some novel approaches to develop ways of providing nutrition to the plant that wasn't solely synthetic,” he said.

Two decades on, he's introduced a diverse crop mix to his

business, reducing his reliance on fertiliser.

This includes cover crops which have improved his soil health and soil carbon.

“It's a game changer ... it's there to regenerate the soil,” Mr McCalman said.

“It's there to limit weed growth, it's there to pick up more water use efficiency.”

Cotton Australia boss Adam Kay points to government data as evidence the industry has made big environmental inroads, including a reduction in insecticide by 97 per cent in the past 25 years, while doubling water efficiency.

A litre of water now produces twice as much cotton as it did in the late 1990s, he said.

“It's an important part of the industry establishing these sustainability credentials.

“The thing that burdens us is the past ... the industry had a reliance on pesticides back in the late 80s, early 90s and water use was a lot higher.

“We recognised that and invested in research and development.”

An industry report released in July shows “close to 90 per cent of environmental practices observed across all farms were ranked as excellent, very good or good”.

Almost half of all growers are also certified sustainable under Cotton Australia's guidelines.

Mr Kay said while 55 per cent are yet to be certified, the industry is still in “good shape,” with another 35 per cent of growers almost across the line.

“It's got about 400 checks and it's got all those things that people would call regenerative practices,” he said.

Duopolies draining the bush Farmers have renewed calls for meaningful competition reform as experts warn the aviation sector faces similar problems to the supermarket sector.

Regional airline Rex was placed into voluntary administration – just months after the collapse of regional carrier Bonza. While Rex’s regional routes were still in operation, NSW Farmers president Xavier Martin said the similarities between aviation and supermarket concentration were too big to ignore.

“There’s no doubt that Australia’s current regulatory environment is enabling these dangerous duopolies to thrive, with few checks and balances in place to stop them misusing their market power,” Mr Martin said.

“Thanks to the government’s lack of action on competition, you have two big, heavily supported players in the air – Qantas and Virgin – and two big players in the supermarkets, with Coles and Woolworths.

“As long as anticompetitive conditions are allowed to continue, Australians will pay the price, whether that’s at the checkout, or through a lack of options when it comes to travel.”

Mr Martin said significant reforms to Australian competition law – including the introduction of divestiture powers to bust apart supermarket giants when necessary – were essential to protect rural communities and consumers from further harm caused by anti-competitive behaviour.

“We need farmers to produce our food and fibre, and we’ve talked at length about the problems we’ve had in supplying the big two supermarkets, but our rural communities also need regional air services to stay connected to families, businesses and healthcare,” Mr Martin said.

“Without Rex, we’re certain the cost of flights would skyrocket in the bush for towns lucky enough to have a second airline, and for those who only have Rex , it would either mean long trips in the car or no trip at all .

“It’s time Australia said enough is enough and cracked down on anticompetitive behaviour and the dysfunctional systems that enable it.”

In the first half of 2024, one-third of Australians accessed Facebook for news, a new study reveals.

The finding contradicts Meta’s long-standing assertion that news content is a minor part of the Facebook experience for most Australian users.

Meta has previously used this claim to justify its decision to abandon commercial agreements with local publishers.

The implications of this are significant for the local journalism landscape, especially for the more than 230 newspapers who are part of Country Press Australia, the association representing the interests of regional and rural newspapers across the country.

The research emphasises the essential role that news media plays in Australia, particularly how regional newspapers contribute to offering balanced and precise news coverage.

More than 40 per cent of Australians cited news access as a key motivator for their daily social media activity, with this tendency more noticeable among Gen Z and millennials at 60 per cent and 53 per cent, respectively.

Country Press Australia president and Warragul & Drouin Gazette publisher Andrew Schreyer said there were significant industry challenges ahead, and forecast potential closures of up to 50 member outlets as current agreements under the News Media Bargaining Code with Meta near their expiration.

The study also found that while overall Facebook usage is waning, half of the Australians still turn to social media for news, with 25 per cent using it as their primary news source.

These findings starkly contradict Meta's position that news is a minimal component of the content seen by Australians on its platforms, which Meta claimed represents less than three per cent of the total.

This study, initiated by News Corp and conducted by Dynata, refutes those statements.

This research release aligns with the media industry's wait on the Albanese government's decision regarding Meta’s obligations

under the News Media Bargaining Code, which might compel Meta to negotiate compensation for content with news providers.

Meta has threatened to block Australian news content should these costs be enforced.

In an article published in The Australian on Monday, News Corp Australasia executive chairman Michael Miller expressed concerns over Meta's threats to remove news content, potentially replacing it with less reliable sources.

He also criticised Meta for its lack of accountability.

The study shows strong public support for social media responsibility, with 85 per cent of Australians agreeing that platforms should prevent the spread of false or harmful information.

Without trustworthy journalism, 66 per cent believe the societal impact would be negative, anticipating increases in misinformation and decreased media diversity.

Mr Miller highlighted the significant impact these findings have on public understanding and the obligations of large tech companies, criticising Meta for avoiding transparency.

This analysis of 2500 Australians confirms the integral role of social media in their news consumption habits, countering Meta’s underestimations of news relevance on its platform, and exposing the misleading nature of its claims.

Mr Schreyer further highlighted the implications for democracy.

"Democracy in areas without local news is lost. Who is going to stand up to a council decision that doesn’t meet the pub test?

Who is going to shine a light on issues when people don’t have a big enough voice to get their message out?

“The research underscores the vital role that regional newspapers play in providing accurate and diverse perspectives.

“As Australians show a growing dissatisfaction with Meta, the study reaffirms the importance of maintaining a strong and independent local press to ensure accountability and transparency within communities.”
