Severe thunderstorms strike The clean-up is underway after wild and woolly weather swept across Coonabarabran, bringing down powerlines, trees and infrastructure. by GEORGIA SPENCE During the past week, Coonaba rab ran’s weather has reflected true summer conditions – b r i g ht, s u n ny d a y s and heavy storms in the afternoon and evening. Bandulla Streets. Due to the location of the incident, a diversion was not able to be put in place. However, crews from Essential Energy worked s w if tly, replaci ng the pole and restor ing power to homes across the district. The Newell Highway was re-opened to traffic shortly after. The erratic storm saw numerous tree branches felled and damage to i n f ra s t r u ct u re a c ro s s
town. Some residents repor ted up to 33 millimetres of rain within half an hour during the surge. On Monday, another storm cell moved over the reg ion, w ith a number of lightning strikes recorded locally. Sydney took the brunt of the storms, with four people struck by lightning. All remain in stable conditions. The Bureau of Meteo rology (BoM)
issued a warning rega rd i ng a se r ies of troughs causing slowm ov i n g s h owe r s a n d thunderstorms. BoM forecasts a medium chance of showers in the morning and afternoon on Thursday, 22 February, with nor th - easter ly winds hitting 25 kilometres an hour. On Friday, there is a high chance of showers and temperatures of up 38 o C across the nor th west.
There were a number of fallen trees and branches as a result of last Sunday’s storm cell across Coonabarabran.
